Portrait of Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz
Artist: Miguel Cabrera (Mexican, 1695–1768)
Date: c. 1750
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: Museo Nacional de Historia, Chapultepec Park, Mexico City, Mexico
Description
This medium-sized oil painting painted in the mid-18th century is the Museo Nacional de Historia's masterpiece in terms of portraits. The Oaxacan painter Miguel Mateo Maldonado y Cabrera depicted Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, the Tenth Muse, based on the portrait by the Spanish artist Juan de Miranda, painted a little more than half a century after the death of the famous writer. Cabrera modified it by placing the nun in a large cell full of books to highlight the wisdom and eagerness to study that characterized the life of the poetess and passionate scientist. Among the books in the library, one can identify the works of the wise Jesuit of the 17th century Athanasius Kircher, who had an important influence on the thinking of his contemporaries. Sor Juana's sharp fingers, which are as white as her face, give the figure an appearance full of spirituality and intelligence. Dressed in the simple habit of the Order of the Jerónimos and wearing on her chest the so-called “shield of nuns”, she is seated in a high-backed chair; her right hand rests on a book, while her left hand holds a rosary in allusion to her piety. Miguel Cabrera, one of the artists who enjoyed the greatest fame among the many painters who flourished during the 18th century in the viceroyalty of New Spain, completed the painting with legends or texts in Latin in a game of intelligence that marks the most important moments of Sor Juana: her birth, her consecration to the convent of San Jerónimo and her death. In it she also expresses her admiration for the Tenth Muse. It is likely that the work was commissioned by the superior of the Jeronymite order.

So. Tariffs.
What is a tariff? It’s a tax placed on foreign items, to be put simply.
Why are they bad? More money for products = less products being bought = less jobs as people get laid off = more poverty.
Or, more money for products = people going into debt = more poverty.
Or, more money for products = people skipping over (sometimes necessary) products = people less able to stay healthy = medical bills = more poverty.
Do they work? No.
How do we know? The Great Depression.
Am I sure? Yes.
Are they good for anyone? No.
Are they good for any economy? No.
Was putting Trump in office a good idea? No.
Are people going to suffer because of his policies and his actions?
Yes.

The Zoot Suit in Black Culture
In today's history lesson, we will discuss the vintage zoot suit, a men's suit with high-waisted, wide-legged, tight-cuffed, pegged trousers, and a long coat with wide lapels and wide padded shoulders.
The Chitlin Circuit (during the era of US racial segregation) was a network of clubs, theaters, and other venues where Black entertainers were allowed to perform, as defined by the Oxford Dictionary. These hotspots had comedy shows where entertainers such as Pigmeat Markham would dress up in baggy suits as part of their routine. This took place in the 1920s, eventually giving way to the more flamboyant, stylish and colorful zoot suit.
Born out of the inner city ghettos and African-American creativity, the suits were first associated with cities such as Harlem, Detroit and Chicago in the 30's. Musicians helped popularize the suit with a more tailored distinguished look, Cab Calloway, an American entertainer, famously wore the zoot suit in the movie, Stormy Weather (1943). Jazz and Jump Blues were all the rage back then and you could spot these suits at the dance halls.

“The zoot was not a costume or uniform from the world of entertainment. It came right off the street and out of the ghetto.” -Harold C. Fox, a Chicago clothier
According to Cab Calloway's Cat-ologue: A "Hepster's" Dictionary (1938), he called the zoot suit "the ultimate in clothes. The only totally and truly American civilian suit."

It was the signature look of the African-American subculture of Hepcats. A young Malcolm X could be seen wearing one. Dancers to businessmen to singers to instrumentalists, all dressed in zoots. It wasn't just about making a fashion statement, but a sense of cultural pride.
The look picked up in other communities such as the Mexicans, Filipinos, Japanese etc... forming their subcultures respectively.

On June 3, 1943, a string of attacks against Mexican-Americans started in Downtown Los Angeles, CA. Approximately 11 sailors got into a heated confrontation with some young Mexican-Americans and proceeded to assault them. The next day, hundreds of sailors traveled to a predominantly Mexican-American settlement in East Los Angeles and began another assault. Harassing anyone who wore a zoot suit, making them strip and burning their clothes. White residents and servicemen used the excuse that the zoots weren't "patriotic" due to it containing large amounts of fabric. This is during World War II were rationing food and fabrics were seen as necessary. This vicious and violent behavior spread to different cities leaving nothing, but devastation and trauma in its wake. These were known as the infamous Zoot Suit Riots of 1943.

No Prayers, No Teeth
I walk past the park often. It’s empty. No kids playing, Just distant noise. The sky was beautiful today, And I can’t appreciate a damn thing. Gripping this amulet tight, So tight my palm bleeds. Is my blood enough? How much more will you take? Well, I don’t feel like crying. I feel like screaming. I don’t feel angry. I just feel weary. I don’t want a reconciliation. I want a reevaluation. Am I too aggressive? Too violent? Too much? Does seeing me walk down the street Scare you that much? If I open my mouth, What words will you give me? Truth doesn’t matter, Just the skin God gives you. If I pray at your feet, Will you let me go free? Just me? Just me? Am I one of the good ones If I make myself small? Never an opinion, Always a nod. Waiting for crumbs As you eat the whole cake. Begging like a dog As you promise a change. It’s never enough. Never the time. Always something comes up. A new villain to fight. Well, I don’t need your prayers. I don’t need your white validation. I don’t need bullshit black squares. I don’t need someone pretending to care. Fuck allies. I need accomplices. Fuck solidarity. I need community. Fuck your comfort. Fuck your excuses. Your whole shit’s toothless. I’m not your fucking token.

HAPPY 1 YEAR JACKRABBIT BRUJO!!!
That's right! One year ago I released my book! It's been a whirlwind and immensely surreal, but here's what's going on since that time frame:
Physical editions are in the works, and should be out by early next year-ish! I'm fortunate enough to go through a local brick and mortar bookshop/publisher
Relatedly, though it'd be a year from now I'm working on setting up an author event at said bookshop/publisher
Book! 2! The first draft is almost finished at 50k/estimated 65k words! Will be available digitally first before physically
Despite these advancements, I'm still an extremely independent author/publisher, the book is written/edited/cover illustrated all by me. Though wrapped in a magical realism murder mystery, Jackrabbit Brujo is a deeply personal exploration of mixed culture and grief set in Tucson, Arizona through the lens of its mixed Mexican-American protagonist Vel and Hmong-American Shoua.
You can read some reviews on Barnes and Noble, but the best way to support me is through my Ko-Fi Shop! I am currently still part-time so any support is really welcome ;-;

"Lo que fuimos, lo que somos"
Quiero buscarte. Autora: Lola Correa
