ChatGPT and the movie ‘Her’ are just the latest example of the ‘sci-fi feedback loop’

In May 2024, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman sparked a firestorm by referencing the 2013 movie “Her” to highlight the novelty of the latest iteration of ChatGPT.

Within days, actor Scarlett Johansson, who played the voice of Samantha, the AI girlfriend of the protagonist in the movie “Her,” accused the company of improperly using her voice after she had spurned their offer to make her the voice of ChatGPT’s new virtual assistant. Johansson ended up suing OpenAI and has been invited to testify before Congress.

This tiff highlights a broader interchange between Hollywood and Silicon Valley that’s called the “sci-fi feedback loop.” The subject of my doctoral research, the sci-fi feedback loop explores how science fiction and technological innovation feed off each other. This dynamic is bidirectional and can sometimes play out over many decades, resulting in an ongoing loop.

Fiction sparks dreams of Moon travel

One of the most famous examples of this loop is Moon travel.

Jules Verne’s 1865 novel “From the Earth to the Moon” and the fiction of H.G. Wells inspired one of the first films to visualize such a journey, 1902’s “A Trip to the Moon.”

The fiction of Verne and Wells also influenced future rocket scientists such as Robert Goddard, Hermann Oberth and Oberth’s better-known protégé, Wernher von Braun. The innovations of these men – including the V-2 rocket built by von Braun during World War II – inspired works of science fiction, such as the 1950 film “Destination Moon,” which included a rocket that looked just like the V-2.

Films like “Destination Moon” would then go on to bolster public support for lavish government spending on the space program.

Creative symbiosis

The sci-fi feedback loop generally follows the same cycle.

First, the technological climate of a given era will shape that period’s science fiction. For example, the personal computing revolution of the 1970s and 1980s directly inspired the works of cyberpunk writers Neal Stephenson and William Gibson.

Then the sci-fi that emerges will go on to inspire real-world technological innovation. In his 1992 classic “Snow Crash,” Stephenson coined the term “metaverse” to describe a 3-D, video game-like world accessed through virtual reality goggles.

Silicon Valley entrepreneurs and innovators have been trying to build a version of this metaverse ever since. The virtual world of the video game Second Life, released in 2003, took a stab at this: Players lived in virtual homes, went to virtual dance clubs and virtual concerts with virtual girlfriends and boyfriends, and were even paid virtual dollars for showing up at virtual jobs.

This technology seeded yet more fiction; in my research, I discovered that sci-fi novelist Ernest Cline had spent a lot of time playing Second Life, and it inspired the metaverse of his bestselling novel “Ready Player One.”

The cycle continued: Employees of Oculus VR – now known as Meta Reality Labs – were given copies of “Ready Player One” to read as they developed the company’s virtual reality headsets. When Facebook changed its name to Meta in 2021, it did so in the hopes of being at the forefront of building the metaverse, though the company’s grand ambitions have tempered somewhat.

Another sci-fi franchise that has its fingerprints all over this loop is “Star Trek,” which first aired in 1966, right in the middle of the space race.

Steve Perlman, the inventor of Apple’s QuickTime media format and player, said he was inspired by an episode of “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” in which Lt. Commander Data, an android, sifts through multiple streams of audio and video files. And Rob Haitani, the designer of the Palm Pilot’s operating system, has said that the bridge on the Enterprise influenced its interface.

In my research, I also discovered that the show’s Holodeck – a room that could simulate any environment – influenced both the name and the development of Microsoft’s HoloLens augmented reality glasses.

From ALICE to ‘Her’

Which brings us back to OpenAI and “Her.”

In the movie, the protagonist, Theodore, played by Joaquin Phoenix, acquires an AI assistant, “Samantha,” voiced by Johansson. He begins to develop feelings for Samantha – so much so that he starts to consider her his girlfriend.

ChatGPT-4o, the latest version of the generative AI software, seems to be able to cultivate a similar relationship between user and machine. Not only can ChatGPT-4o speak to you and “understand” you, but it can also do so sympathetically, as a romantic partner would.

There’s little doubt that the depiction of AI in “Her” influenced OpenAI’s developers. In addition to Altman’s tweet, the company’s promotional videos for ChatGPT-4o feature a chatbot speaking with a job candidate before his interview, propping him up and encouraging him – as, well, an AI girlfriend would. The AI featured in the clips, Ars Technica observed, was “disarmingly lifelike,” and willing “to laugh at your jokes and your dumb hat.”

But you might be surprised to learn that a previous generation of chatbots inspired Spike Jonze, the director and screenwriter of “Her,” to write the screenplay in the first place. Nearly a decade before the film’s release, Jonze had interacted with a version of the ALICE chatbot, which was one of the first chatbots to have a defined personality – in ALICE’s case, that of a young woman.

The ALICE chatbot won the Loebner Prize three times, which was awarded annually until 2019 to the AI software that came closest to passing the Turing Test, long seen as a threshold for determining whether artificial intelligence has become indistinguishable from human intelligence.

The sci-fi feedback loop has no expiration date. AI’s ability to form relationships with humans is a theme that continues to be explored in fiction and real life.

A few years after “Her,” “Blade Runner 2049” featured a virtual girlfriend, Joi, with a holographic body. Well before the latest drama with OpenAI, companies had started developing and pitching virtual girlfriends, a process that will no doubt continue. As science fiction writer and social media critic Cory Doctorow wrote in 2017, “Science fiction does something better than predict the future: It influences it.”

If its on the weekend, Western capitalist societies especially AmeriKKKa are obsessed with competition, organized sports, being busy for the sake of being busy, mindlessness, socializing and errands so if the march is on the weekend, most people will be grocery shopping, clothes shopping, at the mall, at the movies, at a restaurant, at a hair or nail salon, getting a massage, attending kids sports games or dance recitals or plays or martial arts competitions, at the library, at a museum, at an amusement park, at a park, at the beach, at a bar, at a nightclub, at a friends house, at a party, watching a sports game, streaming a show or movie, gaming, scrolling social media, messaging on discord or Whatsapp, going to a play, mowing the lawn, doing the laundry, planning meals for the week, raking leaves, going to church -- endless mindless distractions and busying of the self so who is really traveling to Washington DC for a march for Palestine?

Yes, thousands show up but it isnt enough to disrupt the matrix.

It has to be a mass movement of the people -- hundreds of thousands, not tens, or millions -- for a protest, boycott, strike, march, rally to actually work.

A few thousand people boycotting McDonalds, Starbucks and Disney for Palestine isnt even a rounding error.

Neither is a few people of conscience quitting Google over the cloud AI technology being used to track and surveil Palestinian civilans for Israel.

A few million, however, would impact the bottom line.

Biden was asked if the student protests had made him reconsider his position on Palestine and his immediate, emphatic answer was an unqualified and unmitigated no.

Why do you think that is? Students have been and will continue to be arrested.

Protest encampments will be ripped up and taken down.

Graduations will happen.

Classes will resume.

This is a very, very old story that we have seen time and time again with US military involvement in the Middle East.

The Gulf War was not about liberating anyone from Saddam Hussein.

The Iraq War had nothing to do with 9/11, which was an inside job.

Israel is committing a US-funded genocide against Palestine for the same reasons the Gulf War and Iraq Wars were fought -- money (oil), colonial ideology, Western supremacy, military might and expansionism.

As Biden said in the 80s, if Israel didnt exist, "we would have had to invent her."

So, whats the answer?

The answer is there is no easy answer because a patriarchal, misogynistic, hegemonic, militaristic, colonialist, white supremacist, capitalist state is going to be inherently set up by design to oppress, annihilate, expolit, dehumanize, suppress, repress, colonize, enslave, conquer, slaughter, murder and self propagate its own myth.

Its set up that only a few people hold and can gain access to the levers of power.

Layoffs are cyclical, on purpose and follow a predictable pattern meant to disrupt, unnerve and keep workers in control, desperate, afraid, off-kilter and on the corporate hamster wheel.

Wars are cyclical and on purpose just like mass layoffs are.

Layoffs have nothing to do with the economy and wars have nothing to do with freedom.

Its about exploitation, wealth hoarding, empire building, fear, control, manipulating, amassing and mainting power, hegemony, patriarchy, militarism, white supremacy, police state, fascism, unregulated free markets and exploitative capitalism, monopolies, monoliths, kingdoms, Western Civilization, the Enlightenment, the Industrial Revolution, The Age of AI, robotics . . .

They are really gearing up with AI and robotics.

Studies have demonstrated that 80% of current jobs will be replaced within the next five years with advances in AI & robotics.

So, what happens to people that were doing those jobs?

I believe the relentless endless obnoxious and fucking nauseating push for all things AI & robotics is leading to the following scenario in the next five years:

Once 80% of current jobs have been replaced with AI and robotics, people will be offered jobs to do what they are already doing -- use social media, online gaming and Metaverse (which will be rolled out already) -- and they will be paid as "User Researchers", to fill out surveys and give feedback on their daily experiences using social media, online gaming and the Metaverse and to test out functionality and usability of new features.

What UBI (Universal Basic Income) should have been for all adult US citizens will instead go to these User Researchers. I predict they will borrow from proposed UBI models and pay these User Researches a $1k a month and provide them with healthcare.

The real purpose of these jobs will be to make people even more obsessed and dependent upon social media, online gaming and the coming Metaverse than they already are. Instead of breaking to go to work, now this is their work so there is no break from it Monday through Friday -- they will be addicted.

They will be so addicted that even on the weekends, they will choose to stay inside online -- social media, gaming and Metaverse -- instead of going out and about, socializing, exercising, going for a walk, shopping, movies, going to eat, sports, plays, etc.

VR will be huge at this point and all of the above can be experienced virtually so why leave your house or apartment.

Naturally, there will be people who occupied the 80% of jobs that were eliminated by AI and robotics that wont have an interest in being User Researchers for social media, online gaming or the Metaverse.

I predict they will get the equivalent of retirement packages since their actual functional roles no longer exist and have been replaced with AI and robotics and then I envision they will allow these people to access their 401k and social security early.

I believe User Researcher will be offered as a major in colleges and online academies. I also believe influencers will tout it as the thing to do post high school and post college. I also predict that degrees will be optional for the position and not required.

Naturally, given that these User Researchers will literally be paid for their addictions to social media, gaming and the Metaverse, as one might suspect, they will not be getting up very much from their respective couches, gaming chairs, bean bags, beds and Lay-Z boy reclining chairs and thus, by design, obesity, Type II diabetes, hypertension, atherosclerosis, heart disease and all manners of diseases caused by sedentary lifestyles will skyrocket.

A less healthy, more sedentary, more addicted to tech society than we even have know that are dependent on big tech to fund their existence.

What could possibly go wrong?

Covid was the soft reset for the Age of AI & robotics.

They got rid of countless jobs and small businesses and financially ruined many entrepreneurs and 9 to 5'ers.

Paradoxically, at the same time we were being told that we couldnt go into the office because Covid, yet somehow fast food and big box retail were deemed "emergency services" (like hospitals and pharmacies???) so that mostly black and brown impoverished people who statistically are more immunocompromised and less healthy were constantly exposed to the dangers of Covid as many customers refused to mask up.

Soft reset. Control, fear campaigns, paradoxes, paradigms, millions dead, percentage wise mostly black brown impoverished, elderly and immunocompromised.

Exactly who costs the government the most with Medicare, Medicaid, SNAP & EBT and exactly who they wanted to get rid of.

The pyramid of human modes

Something that crossed my mind recently is my own place in the world, who am I, where do I fit in, what role am I playing in life/lives of others, what am I contributing, where do I rank in the level of success or status in this life, why am I so far behind, why don't I ever seem to fit in. So many questions about my worth, and I realized that there is a "pyramid of human modes" this is not an official term that exists but let's call it this so that you can see each stage of humanity that exsists out there.

Starting from the beginning level to the end, this will show the way that humans can evolve or remain stuck sometimes and most times in things that are not in their control unfortunately.

Hopefully this helps someone who may need some clarity and hope in their lives like I do.

Level 1 Existence mode:

In exsistence mode, this is the lowest, toughest/most heart wrenching level to be in. Fighting to simply remain alive, the battle between your life and physical body.

Here people are dealing with all major health issues like cancer, sudden serious illnesses, physical distress, disconnection, limited cognitive function, their breathing, heart rate, body temperature, all the variety of things when it comes to the physical body. Your organs, your nerves, your bodily function, your brain, your sight, your bones, hands, feet, legs, nose etc. The most basic things you need in order to actually live and have a quality of life.

In this mode you can't focus on anything other than overcoming your own body and health issues. How could you focus on anything else when the very thing you need to survive is being taken away from you.

So it's a really sucky place to be in and my heart goes out to anyone struggling with this. My only hope is that everyone in this stage can eventually heal and by miracle if needed, make it to the next stage and upward.

Level 2 Survival mode:

In survival mode, imo there is many people around the world in this stage, stemming from homelessness to living pay check to pay check. Some of them are even on the cusp of level 1 and 2, so dealing with major/minor health issues while also still having the ability to fight to survive in the smallest ways they can.

Here they are able to meet their basic needs, food, water, shelter, safety, respond to threats or stress.

Their main focus is on immediate survival, hyper vigilance, stress. Interestingly, there is many people in this stage who can't even fathom a life beyond this but some others who long for more. There's so many different kinds of people in this mode.

Some of the most dangerous people can be in this stage bc they don't really care about the future, have hope or just not mentally strong/deep enough to see things through. They don't think of the future period, just living the moment. Many criminals live here, and most of the time their mindset is focused on their own selfish desires, some of them are mentally emotionally unstable but healthy enough to not be in exsistence mode.

Now that I think about it, there is evolution levels within survival mode, so the ones on the cusp, health battles but still able to provide their basic needs, the ones with mental/emotional issues but still physically able, the ones who are striving for more yet still stuck in the loop of trying to provide themselves with basic necessities, the ones with the general physical health in check, having their basic needs met but may be morally corrupt which keeps them trapped here not able to evolve. This could even apply to celebrities at times people who do have money, stability but yet mentally don't have the maturity to get out of the survival mindset. In the survival mode many people can see eachother as enemies, fighting for resources, it's like our basic primial self which is not always the healthiest/kindest.

Alot of people can mentally be in survival mode even when their life isnt this would be considered on the cusp of survival mode/stability mode. But yeah the general idea of survival mode is that people are trapped in fighting for their basic needs and trying to make it through the day/week/month etc. There's not much room for mental/emotional/physical evolution bc all their focus is on making ends meet, surviving financial difficulties, mental health issues and things of that nature. Some people can even be comfortable here, it's really a mixed bag like I said. Most people are in this mode now days.

Level 3 Stability mode:

In stability mode, these people don't have many health/mental set backs, they are able to provide for themselves/others, fit in with societal standards, they can be kind of stagnant, comfortable, mediocre life styles. But this mode is not with out it's own struggles and challenges like the others, yes they may have financial stability and overall security but they may be so consumed with having stability and maintaining it that they can't dedicate time to their creative self, that comes when you have the freedom and room to spread your wings/explore other possibilities of life.

Just like in survival mode, many people now days are in stability mode. Think of it like how society primes us from a young age to be the perfect citizen, finacially responsible, stable career, moderately successful, family oriented, traditional life styles. If you are in this stage consider yourself lucky to have the ability to provide for yourself and others, fit in, have generally good health and be in control of your life. But for some people, they can be very unhappy in this mode. Bc most of their life is kind of controlled by societal rules and what other people think. It's kinda like being on autopilot, I think most people in the world arent born with extreme health issues/disabilities or mental issues. So a lot of people kind of naturally build themselves up with the guidance of societal expectations and generations of traditions to become the responsible/stable people they are.

The unfortunate part of this mode is some people are kind of like just going through the motions, trying to maintain stability that they don't get to truly explore beyond this stage. Which is their spiritual, emotional, mental being, they lack self expression/exploration, creativity, evolution of their entire being and its potential. It's kind like they're in the survival mode of stability mode, yes it's better than being in survival mode but it's lacking freedom from expectations and exploring their personal potential. It's very close tho, they have the tools to evolve but sometimes they may be mentally in the dark of what else is out there. Kind of just living the life they were raised and taught was the way to be. Here people can be comfortable bc they have everything they need, societial approval, finacial cushion to have their needs met and some more, some people even see nothing wrong with this stage bc they arent in lack of the basic essentials of life. But what happens is some people are stuck and may not even understand why they are unhappy where they are sometimes, it's bc they are living a life that was in a way curated by someone else. Their parents and their traditions, their teachers, society etc. It's the average working class citizens in this mode to give you an idea of what kind of people are here.

Something to keep in mind about both survival mode and stability mode is they each have their cognitive limitations, so their lifestyles limit their intellectual abilies and even effect how successful they are. When people are just surviving they can't really prioritize complex thinking, problem solving or intellectual pursuits, memory/focus.. same with stability mode but in a different way, those in stability mode may suffer from narrow thinking, comfortability, structure/routine, indoctrination, limited exposure due to being complacent, not challenging themselves. All these things contribute to how they evolve or don't evolve in the world. Sometimes I wonder if the government wants to keep people stuck in survival and stability mode to keep them in their control, never allowing them to reach a level of mental clarity that can put them so much more ahead. When someone is mentally unbound I feel that unlocks so much crazy potential.. it can be a threat to those higher up.

Level 4 Growth mode:

In growth mode, many people are in this mode too but it's a lot less when compared to stability and survival mode.

I've realized that with each mode I've mentioned so far can be described by lower class, middle class and higher class. Growth mode being attached to the higher class.

So around 40-50% of people globally are in survival mode now days, 30-40% in middle class (stability mode) and 10-20% in growth mode to give you an idea.

So with growth mode people have evolved past the stage of maintaining stability and seeking security, they are not mentally, emotionally, physically, financially held back for the most part. They find the idea of being stable and comfortable as stagnating/unfulfilling. So in this mode people strive for more than just to fit into societial expectations.. a lot of these people are what you'd see in todays times, such as those in high ranking career fields, law enforcement, health fields, the government, celebrities, influencers, people born from rich/successful families, so they kind of have more advantages, opportunities and help that stability mode/working class people didn't have. This is unfortunately where some people can be somewhat evil, greedy, selfish, superficial, egotistical.

I guess you can even say that all these human modes can be applied to our mentalities and not just our daily lives bc many people overlap and have a bit of each one of these in their personalities if that makes sense.

So they have all their basic needs met, they fit societal expectations, have evolved past stability mode and have the luxury of exploring themselves creatively and realising their potential. Some people in this mode can be heavily focused on hustle mentality where they're kind of on the cusp of stability mode, seeking security but also blessed enough to overcome that to dedicate time to their own individual evolution. They understand that they need stability to survive in this world but also have the benefits of never fearing instability, never fearing not fitting into society, so they kind of having a advantage over others. They can have a bigger personality since they arent at risk of not fitting in bc they have the finacial, emotional support that others may not. So basically they have all they need and more to thrive, the awarness of potential, the desire for more. But if not mindful, these people can be somewhat of a darker entity in the game of life.

These people can be aware of their advantages over people like those in survival and stability mode but use that to succeed even more. They kind of let their ego take the wheel since they are on the cusp of stability mode and growth mode. In my head it's like a mixture of survival and stability mode with the benefits of growth mode. So in this stage they can seek validation and prioritize finacial success or success overall. They are self aware enough to realize they have advantages in life but not self aware enough to be humble and focused on the real innerwork that comes with having more resources than someone in stability mode. Like I mentioned earlier in the darker entity part, these people can be somewhat hedonistic focused on pleasure seeking, indulging on all the benefits they have in life.. stopping any other growth from happening.

Once they move past the hustle mode phase (immature growth mode) they than can really focus on their own wellbeing, not any approval, validation or even personal power. Just purely on their own exsistence and potential, so maybe they are focused on developing themselves in a mental, emotional, spiritual level. Kind of like upgrading your own human exsistence. You're not just any regular old human but seek to work on maximizing yourself as a human. A more liberated/evolved emotional, mental, spiritual self. It's really self vs self when growth mode is at it's peak, but not in a survival/stability mode kind of way, these people have the luxury of not struggling for anything other than expanding their own curiousity and potential as a human. Maybe they are exploring the world, maybe they are exploring different cultures, just going beyond just regular basic life things. This is coming from a stand point of seeking a more meaningful life that nourishes their wellbeing and human potential. Hopefully by the end of this phase, the need for validation, security of any kind, ceases to exsist so that their main priority is growth of self.

Level 5 Flourishing mode:

In flourishing mode, people here have evolved passed the ego, external validation, and self focus. They have mastered themselves as a person, no longer in the rat race you can say. What a blessed place to be. No need for the hustle and bustle to make ends meet, for struggling with their own insecurities/societal expectations, working to reach a level of success. In this mode they have everything they can ever want and need, they have succeeded in all aspects of life, physically, mentally, emotionally, finacially. So now their main focus is on what they can do to help the other people and contribute to the world. Think about it, they don't have the constant struggles that a lot of us have today, they don't have to stress about money, stability, security, or whatever it is they lack.. they have total peace with themselves as a person. So at this point it's more of a purely spiritual mission that is about other people and not just themselves. I feel like this is one of the rarest modes to be in, completely free of any personal needs.

I have so much more reasearch to do on flourish mode, flow mood and transcendence mode. But now knowing all these levels 1-5 I want to make it a point for anyone in level 1-3 which is most of us, please never feel sorry for yourself, your lack of growth or success. I promise you there is a reason you are where you are at this moment, whether it's a lack of support, resources, opportunities...some people just arent set back by health issues of all types or even finacial difficulties, a lot of people are just luckier than others to be ahead. But that says nothing about you as a person, I hope that's something you understand one day on a deep level. A lot of people do have the support and resources to help them succeed. So in other words they did have the help, that you never did. Some people are born disadvantaged, and other are born advantaged, that's the key.

You aren't alone tho, whether you are fighting to live in exsistence mode, fighting to make ends meet in survival mode, or fighting to fit in, in stability mode. Each of those have their challenges but also each of them have their own group of people to find community in. Do not compare your life to the next person, bc some people just have an unfair advantage. Instead, seek to understand why you are, where you are right now. It's a good idea to understand where you are currently in the human modes, so atleast you're more aware of your own disadvantages and advantages.
