Chapter 102: February 2018
The chill vanished. Gerryâs hair settled back around his shoulders, black flowing back in like ink. He let out a long, slow breath.
Tim, well used to Gerryâs post-flashback collapses by now, shifted his grip and weight so that when Gerry went slack and boneless a second later, the sudden shift didnât send them both tumbling to the ground. Instead, he took a careful step backwards to press against the door to the Archivistâs office, which thankfully didnât budge, and then slid slowly down it so that he was sat on the floor with Gerry passed out in his lap, flopped against his chest. He was still cold, but he knew from experience he would gradually warm up over the next few hours.
He was going to hate himself when he woke up.
Tim didnât have to look up to know what his friendsâ faces were probably doing, but he did anyway. Sasha looked shocked, and also like she was about to be sick; Melanieâs face was ashen, even as her eyes glinted with anger; Martin simply looked quietly devastated.
âHe didnât want you to see that,â Tim murmured.
âIs that what theyâre always like?â Martinâs voice was soft and barely audible.
Tim recognized that he was both trying not to throw a fit and trying to keep from compelling the answers. He nodded. âHe usually gets a bit more warning that oneâs coming on, but for the most part, yeah. Never seen him have two so close together, though, so heâll either be around in a few hours or a couple minutes. I donât know how that part works.â
âAnd does he usuallyâŠâ Sasha flapped a hand helplessly.
âNarrate?â Tim supplied. âYeah. Theyâre, I mean, actual memories, so I canât change anythingâat least I donât think I can change anything. But I can sort ofâŠinteract with him a bit, you know? Get clarification, air theories with himâŠand I had more than a few choice words for your mother when he was in her past. If it doesnât affect the actual events, he might, um, respond a little. But, yeah, usually he justâŠgoes through the memory and then passes out.â He sighed and ran a careful hand through Gerryâs thick, glossy hair, tugging out the remains of the hair tie.
Sasha turned to Martin and Melanie. âAndâŠI have to ask. Was he, umâŠaccurate?â
âYeah.â Martin rubbed his arm reflexively, as if he could still feel the weight of the earth on it. âThatâs exactly how I remember it happening.â
âHe did ask me if they were noisy,â Melanie said. âThe ghosts. I remember thinking that was a weird question out of the blueâŠwait, is he actually experiencing these memories now and changing them?â
âNo. Heâs able to respond when the interaction is all in his head, and sometimes he can fit whatâs being said to what was experienced at the time, but theyâre as unchangeable as the statements or the dreamsâall he can do is walk through them and witness them and go on.â Martin made an annoyed sound in the back of his throat and pinched the bridge of his nose. âOkay, that has got to stop. I canâtâI donât have the energy for this right now.â
Tim had been noticing for a while that the soft, gentle crackle of static that used to accompany any instance of Martin calling on the Beholding, deliberately or inadvertently, had started to appear less and less frequently since heâd come back from America until it only seemed to be audible when he was actively trying. Seemingly little things like that just appeared in his head without warning, and he didnât always catch himself before blurting them out. Tim knew, better than probably anyone except Jon and maybe Gerry, how much it bothered him, but coming on top of everything else that had happened today, it had to be worse. He felt himself shift, on instinct, to give Martin a brotherly hug, but Gerryâs weight reasserted itself and he realized he couldnât. Instead, he shot an imploring look at Sasha.
Thank God, she understood. She threw an arm around Martinâs shoulders and squeezed. âI think you need a break. Take a walk or something.â
Martin side-eyed her. âConsidering the last time you suggested I step out of the room in that sensible tone of voice was three hours ago and Jon immediately climbed into the Buried, youâll forgive me for being suspicious of why youâre suggesting that.â
Sasha ducked her head guiltily. âYou know what, thatâs fair, but I really mean it this time. Itâs not a ploy to get you out of the way while we do something stupid behind your back. I think weâve kind of done all the stupid for the day.â
âNot helping, Sash,â Tim muttered, scanning Martinâs face. He glanced at Melanieâin particular at her leg, which looked like it was oozing a bitâthen cleared his throat and spoke louder. âTell you what, why donât you and Sasha both get Melanie to the clinic? Get that leg stitched up proper. Take your phone, and if Jon comes back up before you get back, Iâll have him call and talk to you, okay? Even better, keys are in my coat pocketâtake the car so you donât have to carry Melanie four blocks.â
The pain and longing on Martinâs face was palpable, but he nodded reluctantly. âWe, um, we should probablyâŠrun and get you a new set of trousers, too.â
âYou need a different shirt, too,â Sasha said, gesturing at Martinâs torn and bloodstained shirt. âHonestly, it wouldnât hurt for all of us to have the supplies to stay here for a few days. You know, just in case.â
In case of what went unspoken, but Tim could guess. Martin had just done a fairly big display of power on one of the few surviving remnants of the Stranger. Nothing had really attacked them since Jared Hopworth, but that didnât mean it wouldnât, just that they were overdue. He nodded. âIâve got an overnight bag at Gerryâs still packed, and I think he has one by the door ready to go just in case.â
âI know where he keeps that. Same place he always has.â Martin swallowed. âPromise youâll call if anything happens.â
âSwear on my nonnaâs cannoli,â Tim said solemnly, which did at least make Martin smile. âAnd that goes for you too, by the way.â
âWill do.â Sasha fished Timâs keys out of his jacket and jangled them in the othersâ direction. âAllons-y.â
They left, Melanie once again using Martin as a makeshift crutch. Tim watched them leave, then waited a few minutes after he heard the door to the Archives shut before moving. He carefully shifted, then got to his feet, hefting Gerry in his arms. Heâd gained a bit of weight in the months theyâd been more or less living together, between regular meals and not being constantly on the run, but he was still wiry, and it was easy enough for Tim to carry him, bridal style, to Document Storage.
The cot was still largely madeâTim didnât think Melanie had actually been under the blanketsâso he got Gerry settled on it and tucked him in. There was a pen lying abandoned next to a statement scrawled in Martinâs familiar handwriting and a mostly empty cup of tea; he picked it up, grabbed a piece of paper that didnât look important, and scribbled a note to Gerry, then tucked it under his hand so heâd be sure to notice it when he awoke. He crept out, closed the door quietly, and went to the break room to make a cup of tea. On second thought, he made a cup of coffee; tea was soothing, and right about then, he wanted to be tense.
Then he went back into the Archives, grabbed his chair and his laptop, and dragged it over to the door to the Archivistâs office. Might as well get some work done, such as it was, while he kept his vigil.
A lot of their research was perfunctory these days. It took absolutely no effort for Martin to know (or Know) which statements were real and which were false, so they didnât need to look into them to determine veracity. Mostly it was about doing damage control on the real statementsâmaking sure things hadnât got too out of hand, finding out how bad things were now, that sort of thing. But the false ones still needed to be recorded, in theory, and with Martin handling the real onesâJon didnât need them anymore, a development they all pretended didnât worry them in the slightest to varying degrees of successâthe rest of them took care of the stuff that would end up in what they were still calling the Discredited section. So Tim pulled over the small stack of files, clicked on the recording app on his laptop, and got to work.
âStatement of Jonny DâVilleâseriously? Okayâregarding a series of creepy notes.â
Heâd powered through about six recordings, including one that was clearly an entry from Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark with the serial numbers filed off, and was most of the way through a seventh when the door to Document Storage opened and Gerry came out, looking haggard. Tim gave him a quick wink and held up a finger as he said, âMr. Newall informed us that he was going to, quote, âstand on the rooftop, shake his fist at the sky, and curse existence itselfâ, which I guess means the statistics convinced him. But, and I know weâre not supposed to put personal stuff on these recordings, but I have to say that if he runs his games anything like he talks, I might have to give that podcast of his a listen. End recording.â He shut off the app and smiled up at Gerry. âHey. How are you feeling?â
âAbout like usual.â Gerry bent down to give Tim a much gentler kiss than normal, then sank to the ground next to him, resting his head against his hip. âHow long was I out?â
Tim glanced at the clock on his laptop before closing it. âThree hours, give or take. A new record.â
âDidnât need the sleep as much as usual, I guess. And itâs not because I slept last night. Just a refreshing flashback overall.â Gerry sighed. âWhere is everybody?â
âClinic. I think,â Tim added, reaching for his phone. There were no messages from anybody, which he supposed was good. âMartin and Sasha took Melanie to get her leg stitched up properly, and then theyâre going to go round and get stuff for everyone to stay at the Archives overnight for a few days. Weâre overdue for an attack.â
âAnd even if we werenât, Martin wonât leave until Jon comes up from the coffin, and if we leave him alone here heâll probably do something stupid like climb down after him and get trapped forever, which I assume is why youâre parked in front of the door like something out of a heist movie.â Now that the laptop was out of the way, Gerry shifted to lay his head in Timâs lap. After a momentâs pause, he asked, âHow bad was it?â
âDefine âit.ââ Tim wrapped a lock of hair from the white streak around his finger idly.
âHow did Martin take it?â Gerryâs voice was soft.
Tim definitely should have known that would be Gerryâs first concern, actually. Especially given the nature of the situation. âHeâsâŠnot having a great time of it. Melanie stabbing him, and then Breekon delivering the coffin, and apparently he managed to extract a statement from himâŠthen finding out Jon went in there after Daisy, and then the flashback? Itâs a lot to handle. And then he sort of Knew you could only talk back to us when it fit in with the narration, I guess, and that frustrated him a bit. But I donât think heâs mad at you.â He paused. âYet.â
âOh, heâs going to be, once he has the time to be,â Gerry assured him. âWhen heâs in crisis mode, he puts off his own needs and emotions in favor of taking care of everyone elseâs. You can usually tell when heâs decided the situation is safe when he explodes on you about something. Record is six months. I think Melanie had even forgotten what it was he was mad about. Heâll probably rip my head off as soon as Jon comes back.â
âIs it weird to say Iâd like him to do it sooner?â
âNo. Itâs not good for him to bottle up like that, but especially if Melanie went allâŠSlaughter on him, heâs going to fight his anger for a bit out of fear that itâll manifest.â Gerry stole Timâs coffee cup and took a sip. âGod, that was bad. I donât remember the Buried trying to sweet-talk me into giving up like that the first time. Mustâve blocked that out.â
âNot the Buried, babe. That was me.â Tim rubbed his thumb over Gerryâs cheek. âI know you canât usually respond or anything, but, Jesus, you sounded so distressed, I justâI thought maybe if I reminded you that you were having a flashback you might calm down a bit. Guess it backfired.â
Gerry looked up at him in surprise, then smiled. âYouâre not exactly beating the âsweetâ allegations there, Stoker.â
âShut your whore mouth.â Tim bent down to kiss Gerry, then gave a muffled yelp as Gerry, with surprising strength, grabbed him around the neck and pulled him down into his own lap for a more intense kiss.
âShould we come back later?â Sashaâs voice said from nearby, sounding amused.
Tim held up his middle finger, and from the shift in Gerryâs grip and the choked-off laugh from someone nearby, he guessed Gerry had done the same. Then he heard a plaintive mew and pulled away from the kiss enough to ask, âIs that a fucking cat?â
âIf Iâm going to be here for a few days, Iâm not leaving the cats alone,â Melanie said, sounding annoyed.
Gerry let go of Tim, who got to his feet and pulled Gerry up easily. Martin, Melanie, and Sasha were laden down with several bags each; Martin also had a cat carrier, while Sasha had another. Melanie had changed into a pair of loose, silky-looking trousers, probably so they wouldnât rub her stitches, and a fluffy jumper the color of sea foam. Martin, too, had changed his torn shirt for a black turtleneck that made him look both slightly slimmer and significantly more intimidating. It also made Tim suspect he was planning to jump straight into the Buried after Jon.
âAre you okay?â Melanie asked Gerry.
âNo, not really, but Iâm feeling all right, at least.â Gerry looked between Melanie and Martin, his expression guilty. âIâm sorry. IâI didnât want you to know it was like that.â
Martin stared at Gerry, his lips pressed into a tight line. Tim could see the tension building, and could also see Martin visibly swallowing it down. He took half a step away from Gerry and sat back in his chair, picking up his coffee and leaning back as best he could. Thankfully, the door kept him upright. âNope, you deserve this, Ger. Donât hold anything back, Marto.â
Martin took a deep breathâand let Gerry have it, with absolutely none of the Archivist and every ounce the little brother. âWhat the fuck, Gerard.â
âOoh, full first name, heâs in trouble,â Sasha murmured to one of the cats, all of whom had been freed from the carriers now. The extremely fluffy grey tuxedo cat mrrped in agreement.
Martin ignored them both. âYou keep doing this. You didnât tell us what Mum and Aunt Mary were using me for, you didnât tell us you were working with Gertrude Robinson, you didnât tell us about the rituals, you didnât tell us you had fucking cancer, and it was ages before you told us about the flashbacks at all. And now it turns out that youâve beenâŠpossessed by the past, forced to narrate it into the void even while youâre reliving it, and you justâŠwerenât going to tell us?â
âItâit didnât seem that bad,â Gerry said, a bit lamely. Tim could see, from his expression, that while heâd expected Martin to be mad, he hadnât quite expected this, and it honestly seemed to be scaring him a bit. âI didnâtââ
âItâs feeding you,â Martin cut in sharply. âYou know that, right? Not to the same degree as reaping the dying, but every flashback that isnât something mundane, every time you relive an encounter with one of the Fourteen where someone should have died but didnât, itâs feeding you, and itâs taking you further along the path youâre fighting, and you didnât think it was that bad?â
The legs of Timâs chair thumped back to the ground. âWait, itâs what?â
The guilt in Gerryâs eyes was instant, and Tim swallowed down on no small amount of his own anger at the realization that Gerry had known that. âItâs notâŠas bad. Like you reading the written statements rather than taking live statements. Look, I know that usually someone isâŠI donât know, dreaming about the moment when the flashbacks come, but itâs not like Iâm standing there watchingââ He broke off abruptly and clapped a hand over his mouth, eyes widening.
If Jon had been there, Tim thought distantly, heâd be shouting on Martinâs behalf right about now. For just a moment, in the shocked silence that followed Gerryâs words, it looked like Melanie was going to fill in that role. But Martin held out a hand to stop herâand for once, he didnât look like he was going to back down.
âDoes it hurt?â he asked, steel in his voice. âThe flashbacks. The aftermath. Whatever. Do you feel it?â
âYes,â Gerry answered immediately, hand coming away from his mouth. âItâs not the same as the seizure-inducing agony that happens when I refuse to take someone whoâs on the cusp of dying, itâs more like the kind of headache you get when youâre low on oxygen, but it still hurts.â He winced and closed his eyes. âI deserved that.â
Martin screwed up his face and dropped his head for a moment, which was when Tim realized he had compelled Gerry. âNo, you didnât. I didnât actually do that on purpose. Iâm sorry.â
âI know better than to push you when youâre upset.â Gerry took a deep breath and looked up at Martin. âYouâre right. I should have told you a long time ago. Both of you. I justâŠdidnât want you to think I was less than human.â
âYou just didnât want me to rip out your spine and flatten your ribs like spatchcocking a chicken,â Melanie muttered. She limped over to Gerry and hugged him tightly. âYouâre still human, you asshole. Even if you do have creepier dreams than Martin.â
Martin huffed at her, but came over to hug both her and Gerry, too. Gerry clung to both of them, and for a long moment none of them moved.
Finally, Gerry stepped back and looked around. âNow that weâve got that out of the wayâŠwhat do we do now?â
Tim shrugged. âSit vigil until Jon comes up, I guess.â
Martin shook his head, his worry rushing back in an instant. âIâI canât do that. I need toââ
âYou need to stay out of there, Martin,â Melanie said sharply. âIt only just let you go once. You really think itâll stick at swallowing the Archivist?â
âI canât just leave him in there,â Martin shot back. He turned to Tim and Sasha. âDid he have a plan? A way to get out? Hell, a way to find Daisy? Anything?â
âHe thinks the fact that she Marked him might give him a lead,â Tim answered. âAnd to get outâŠâ He hesitated and looked up at Sasha.
âItâs you,â Sasha supplied. âWe thoughtâyou know, you two have each otherâs hearts, so that should be enough to get him out, right?â
âIââ Martin hesitated. âI-I donât know. I canâtâthatâs too close to another Fear, I canât Know anything about it in that detail. IâI can still sense himâjustâbut I canâtâi-itâs too far away.â
ThatâŠwas less than optimal. Tim swallowed the sudden surge of nerves. If Jon had got so deep that Martin was having trouble finding himâŠwhat chance did Jon have? It was tempting, for just a second, to let Martin into the officeâmaybe if they all stood with him, they couldâ
âTapes,â Gerry blurted suddenly, his face lighting up.
âWhat?â Martin, Melanie, and Tim all said in unison, looking up at him in confusion.
âTapes, the tapes. Youâve got a bunch with Martinâs voice on them, right?â Gerry gestured at the door. âHow many recorders do you have? Play a bunch of the tapes on top of the coffin, it shouldâI mean, today notwithstanding, when Iâm having the flashbacks, I hear you, Tim. I heard Martin and Melanie tooâdidnât hear you, Sasha, but I donât know if thatâs because you didnât say anything orââ
âOh, I had a lot to say, you just didnât answer me.â Sasha set down the cat and ignored his plaintive cries to be picked up again. âIâve seen about a dozen recorders in various places. They just keepâŠturning up, and we keep putting them in the bottom drawer of the filing cabinet there. It could work.â
Melanie pushed herself to a standing position. âIâll get the tapes. Martin, come on, you can help me get them.â
Martin hurried to Document Storage, where they still kept all the tapes, Melanie trailing along in his wake and fussing at him to slow down. Tim stood up and kissed Gerryâs cheek. âBrilliant.â
âWait and be sure it works before you say that,â Gerry cautioned in a low voice, but he smiled as he said it.
He joined Tim and Sasha at the file cabinet. Sasha pulled open the bottom drawer, and Tim stared at the motley collection of shoebox recorders, handheld recorders, and one candy-colored miniature boom box with a microphone attached by a curly cable. âI donât remember us having so many.â
âTheyâre like wire hangers. They breed when youâre not looking.â Sasha bent down to grab a handful.
âBetter than breeding when you are looking, I guess. The reproductive habits of Machina kasetophono is not something Iâve ever wanted to observe,â Gerry said dryly, snagging the boom box.
âDid you just invent a scientific taxonomy for âtape recorderâ?â Tim demanded.
âIâm impressed that you picked up on that.â
âFirst in Anthropology, remember?â Tim scooped up what was left in the drawer. âCome on. Hopefully this will be enough.â
They dropped the recorders onto the desk just as Martin and Melanie emerged from Document Storage, arms full of tapes. Tim didnât think heâd done a task with this kind of urgency since his student days as they all grabbed tapes, checked they were properly rewound, and snapped them into place. Gerry dashed off and returned with a box that he began piling the loaded recorders into. Once they were done, he hesitated, then handed it to Tim. âBe careful in there.â
âI will.â Tim gave Gerry one more quick kiss, then hugged Martin with one arm. âWeâll get him out. We will. Câmon, Sash.â
Sasha followed him without question. Tim glanced over his shoulder briefly to see Gerry and Melanie wrap their arms around Martin from either side, all of them watching with worried expressions, then opened the door to the Archivistâs office and went in.
Just like in the statement, the coffin was of pale, unvarnished wood, with the words DO NOT OPEN scratched deep into the surface. The chain lay on the floor, padlock still open with the key inserted, but the lid was closed. Sasha stared at it for a long moment, open curiosity on her face. Tim locked the door to the officeâjust as a precautionâand nudged her. âDonât get any ideas, Miss James. Come on, letâs get these queued up.â
âHow long has he been down there?â Sasha checked the clock on the wall. âA few hours? Should we just play one at a time orââ
âNo. All of them,â Tim said positively. âTake âem out, set âem up, let âem go. We can stay here to monitor and rewind them if we need to, but the more he can hear Martinâs voice, the better.â
He pulled out the first recorder, one of the shoebox ones, and twiddled the volume dial so it was all the way up. He set it on the coffin and pressed PLAY. After the customary split second of spooling, Martinâs voice flowed out. âMartin Blackwood, Archivist at the Magnus Institute, recording statement DA-12, statement of Adelard DekkerâŠâ
Getting the hint, Sasha grabbed the next one and put it at the other end of the coffin. A second later, Martinâs voice overlapped with the statement that was beginning to roll out. âYouâre sure this is all right?â
It probably took them about ten minutes to get all the tapes theyâd found going. Martin had, at this point, recorded almost more of the statements than the rest of them put together, so there was a veritable cacophony of recordings, to the point that Tim couldnât even distinguish what they were saying. They were all Martinâs voice, though, so hopefully that would be enough.
Sasha evidently had the same thought as she stepped back. Over the babble of statements, she said, âI feel like there ought to be more we can do.â
Tim bit his lip. Suddenly, the memory of Gerryâs echoing voice floated into his head: Desperate, defeated, and oh so afraid, I begin singing âLet the Bulgine Runââit may not work, but it will at least let it know that we are fighting.
âShit, how does that song goâŠâ he muttered. Gerry had taught him most of their standards, but it took him a second to match words to tune. Raising his voice, he sang out as loud as he could, âOh, the smartest packet you could findâŠâ
Thankfully, Sasha apparently knew it as well and joined in. He could hear the others, faintly, singing through the door behind him and knew they were joining in, and he hoped that the shanty, combined with the tapes, would be enough.
They had just reached the end of the words Tim knew, and he was scrambling to improvise an additional verse, when the lid of the coffin rattled. Tim grabbed Sasha and pulled her back against the wall as the recorders began sliding away, some silenced as they reached the ends of their tapes, others still yelling to the ceiling about forests and ghosts and monster movies. After a moment, the lid flew open andïżœïżœthank ChristâJon emerged, gasping, covered in dirt head to toe, with haunted eyes, but still alive. Tim could see a narrow flight of stone steps that he was scrambling his way up, one hand clutching a recorder and the other behind him. He got a little further andâŠ
And there was Daisy.
Jon all but fell over the side of the coffin, dragging Daisy with him. Sasha didnât hesitate. She lunged forward and grabbed the coffin lid, then stopped, staring into it.
âSasha, no, donât!â Tim, panicking slightly, darted forward, intent on dragging her back, slamming the lid shut, and locking it tight. Possibly welding it in place.
Sasha shook her head and looked up, but there was no fear in her eyesâonly wonder, and a bit of respect. âItâs empty.â
âWhat?â Tim and Jon said in unison.
âLook.â Sasha pointed into the depths. âItâsâitâs gone. Itâs just a coffin. Jon, you defeated the Buried.â
Jon seemed understandably reluctant to look, but Tim peered over Sashaâs shoulder and blinked. The steps heâd seen wereâas Sasha saidâgone. There was nothing in the coffin but a thin sprinkling of dirt scattered over a pale yellow bottom.
âHoly shit.â Tim blinked, then shook his head. âIâll be damned. Still, uh, letâs not tempt fate, yeah? Câmon, letâs lock this sucker up, just in case. Now we can send it to Artifact Storage.â
Jon shook some of the dirt out of his hair and looked around the room. âWhatâŠtape recorders?â
âGerryâs idea. He thought Martinâs voice would help.â Tim wrapped the chain back around the coffin and locked it securely. âHeâs outside waiting for you. Come on.â
Sasha unlocked the door to the office and yanked it open. âIt worked!â
She had to dodge out of the way as Jon practically charged out the door and into Martinâs waiting arms, coming together in a cloud of dirt. It was only when he let go to throw his arms around Martinâs neck that Tim realized Jon had still been holding Daisyâs hand.
Tim studied her. She lookedâŠdifferent. Her hair had grown out during the months sheâd been trapped underground, from what he could see under the dirt and dust, and there were dark hollows under both eyes. She seemed almost to have shrunk into herself, and the look in her eyes actually stirred a little bit of sympathy in himâshe looked lost. Broken.
âAre you okay?â Martinâs voice cracked and shook even on those four syllables. âChrist, Jon, Iâwhen they said you went in thereââ
âIâm okay. Iâm okay.â Jon didnât sound totally convinced of that, and the way he clung told Tim he was definitely not okay, but it also told him he was getting there. âItâŠwasnât fun, butâI, I found her.â
Martin tucked his chin over Jonâs head and looked over at Daisy, then offered her a weak but genuine smile. âHey.â
Daisyâs mouth twitched slightly, like she was considering smiling but wasnât sure she was allowed to. Tim hesitated, then held out his arms hesitantly. âUhâŠwelcome back?â
To his surprise, she actually acceptedâas hesitantly as heâd offered, but she did step closer and tentatively put her arms around his shoulders. He responded in kind, not wanting to squeeze her too tightly ifâŠbut after a second, she seemed to release a lot of tension, all at once.
âIt was lonely down there,â she said, her voice low and shaky, almost fragile somehow. âQuiet, butâŠI didnât think I neededâŠpeople.â
Melanieâs expression looked conflicted, but then she shifted and crossed her arms over her chest. âWell. Youâve got us, for what itâs worth.â
âYeah.â Daisy let go of Tim and looked around the room, like she was marking everyone. âWhereâs Basira?â
And, really, Tim thought with a sinking feeling, he should have expected that, too. He looked around at the others, who all bore expressions he thought were probably pretty similar to his ownâguilt, sympathy, pain, worry. Maybe a little bit of fear, but strangely, he wasnât as afraid of Daisy as he had been. She didnât seem as dangerous as she had.
Yet, an evil little voice in the back of his brain said. Give her time to recover.
Sasha was the one to finally break the silence. âSheâs working for Peter Lukas.â
Daisy blinked and tilted her head to one side, sending another shower of dirt to the floor. They were going to have to do some serious cleanup. âDo IâŠknow him?â
âNo reason why you should. The Lukases are Institute donors, and theyâre also very tightly bound up in the Lonely,â Martin said, gently and carefully. Heâd let go of Jon, probably so as not to rub it in to Daisy, but they were still standing incredibly close to one another. âThe plan worked, Tim and Sasha got Elias arrested, but Peter Lukas took over pretty much right away. Basiraâs been working directly for him since just after Halloween.â
Daisy stared at Martin. Tim had always found her expressions rather difficult to read, unless she was trying to be intimidating. He didnât now. âWhy?â
âShe made some kind of deal with him. There were a lot of attacks against the Archives, and the last oneâŠi-it was bad. We all realized we couldnât keep fighting them off like that.â Martin swallowed visibly. âBasira left mid-conversationâwe thought at first sheâd just gone out for a walk or something, but the next thing we knew, her desk was empty and I got a memo from Peter Lukas that she had been reassigned. Sheâs his personal assistant now.â
Sasha nodded. âWe donâtâŠsee her too much these days. Sheâs still around, and we see her more often than we do Peter LukasâI actually donât know if anybody has seen him other than Basira and maybe Manalâbut itâs still a rare thing.â
Martin hesitated. âIâll go let her know youâre back. Sheâll want to know.â
âAsk if we need permission to send the coffin to Artifact Storage or if we can just drop it off while youâre at it,â Tim suggested. âI donât think we need that thing sitting down here any more, even if itâs empty.â
âWait, what?â Martin said incredulously. âDid you say empty?â
âTell you what, you explain,â Tim said to Sasha. âIâll go talk to Basira myself. And maybe see about finding the extra brooms. Be back in a jiffy.â Before anyone could argue with him, he headed out of the Archives and into the Institute proper.
Manal being away from her desk was, surprisingly, a good sign; Tim had learned that if he bumped into anyone else outside the Archives, he was that much less likely to find Basira. Her office door was firmly shut, but he knocked on it three times and then opened without waiting for permission.
âDaisyâs back,â he said without preamble, and then stopped. There was a coldness in the room, and a faint smell of salt and damp permeated the air. The computer was on, humming low in the background, and a set of half-filled forms sat next to it, a fat-barreled pen resting on top of it, cap stuck firmly to the back and exposing the nib to the open air.
Other than that, the room seemed empty.

additional thoughts on why they had better stick to sword drills: Liu Qingge would doki-doki himself into a qi deviation and Shen "middle sibling" Qingqiu would immediately ruin his ~aloof immortal~ persona
#svsss#liushen#liu qingge#shen qingqiu#would sqq beat lqg in an actual fight? no.#would sqq succeed in winning exactly once because there's no world in which lqg is prepared for how dirty sqq will fight#once it's a wrestling match and he's having flashbacks to his older siblings trying to pin him and subsequently bluescreens when#sqq fucking licks him in order to get him to let go? yes.#neither of them are going to recover from that. it can never ever EVER be mentioned again for very different reasons#sqq is beyond embarrassed his face is too thin for this#lqg is lying awake at night reliving it#my art

A Vision
That scene in s9 is probably one of my favorite Jay moments because of how well it shows why Wu chose him and what his role is in the team. Being the out-of-the-box thinker, the dreamer. Especially because of how it sets him apart from the rest, like Zane, Cole or Kai, whose purposes are to protect others while Jay inspires people (s6 and s12)
#ninjago#jay ninjago#ninjago jay#jay walker#ninjago dragons rising#ninjago fanart#ninjago wu#wu ninjago#dad jay au#â it's that scene from chapter 18#the moment when jay had to be on the verge of death to have a vision with wu#also yes this flashback is the one that is repeated the most in the AU#aa drawing young jay makes me sad. he has no idea what awaits him#i don't know if i've mentioned it before but in my hc he's 16 when wu recruits him#so he's the same age as Kaida here bc parallels

i know im supremely late to the party but what the fuck do you mean we would have had an explanation behind the little piano melody Wylan plays in episode three. you mean to tell me that there would have been a wylan centric episode. that we wouldve had matthias calling wylan a lamb. we wouldve had jesper getting jealous and confessing his love. we wouldve had a goddamn backstory to his piano tune. and netflix fucking cancelled it? im so pissed im gonna go bite something

Gregors canto being the first of all the sinners makes me so sad for him bc bro was really gg thru it but thr was barely any camaraderie among the sinners since they js met and no one cared enough to rly gaf..
n then thr was the whole double whammy with yuris death on top (which is even worse considering gregor said that grete was around her age)
and then the TripLe whammy whr we meet the whole villain gang for the first time and everyones finding out that smone they were close to is part of that gang
so gregors js thr seeing his abusive mom after being thrown back into the battlefield like
N no one rly noticesđ and even after the canto finishes they get scolded by verg and dante wasnt rly experienced enough to know how to cheer everyone up (cant blame them since they literally had their head replaced like a day ago) and the other sinners were grieving yuris loss so he js sits on his own seat n stays quiet HE DOESN EVEN CRYđđđđđ
#ALSO ALSO that scene where dante is yelling at gregor to kill the yuri-turned-abno#like do u think it gave him flashbacks to when his mother or the other blue coat scientist would tell him to slice the 'apples'#BRO WAS FACING LIKE 5 DEMONS N NO ONE GAF IM CRYING#SOMEONE CHECK ON HIM PLSSSS#not to mention thr was that one scene during murder on the warp express#where the w corp employee thought he was a mutated lovetown monstrosity n in the next cg gregor was hiding his arm behind his back#i srsly need someone to notice his suffering bc bros js letting ppl use him as a punching bag#GREGOR STAND UPđđđđđđ#lcb#limbus company#pjm#project moon#gregor lcb#gregor limbus company

That scene- where Clint makes more trick arrows⊠đ please just imagine for me Tony Stark and Clint Barton, the two insomniacs of the avengers team, huddled in the lab at four in the morning, Tony leaned against Clint, half draped over him, laughing at something heâs said as they both fiddle with tech, cracking jokes and coming up with more and more outlandish trick arrows to create, toasting marshmallows over the small fire they accidentally started and sharing thoughts and space and⊠just Clint and tony friendship for me pleaseÂ
#clint barton#tony stark#besties#the avengers#give me more casual mentions of their friendship even if they arent there#like i DEVOURED clint using stark tech to make his arrows in hawkeye#have him call up bruce once for some insight#he and thor go drinking and he introduces kate#have a flashback to clint needing his billionaire best friend to pay for something#him and nat#just give me some avengers mention crossovers please#sobbing#avengers#marvel#mcu

Listen. Listen. In no universe will I pretend that Dream wasnât in the wrong when he condemned Nada to Hell. That was fucked up.
But bear with me and trust that I know that while we take a step back from that for a second to talk about something else.
Nada saw Dream from afar, fell in love with him, and went on a quest to track him down. Once she finds Some Guy In A Mask (not realizing who he is) she talks about how she loves this mystery man so much. Mask Guy is like âFor real?â and sheâs like âFor real for real!!â Then he takes off his mask and is like âthis is amazing I absolutely love you too!!â and Nada is immediately like âoh shit, Dream?? Of the Endless??? Nvm gotta goâ
Everything after that is 100% shitty of Dream. Not arguing that. However, treating this as fictional characters in a storyâŠ.
A woman saw Dream, claimed to love him enough to track him down, and then as soon as she found out who he was she was horrified.
So anyway when I think about Dream not wanting to reveal his identity to Hob thatâs what Iâm thinking about.
#the sandman#dreamling#sandman meta#I personally like the reading that the Nada story is a metaphor#I canât remember who said it but someone mentioned that if weâre being literal Nada doesnât act like someone who was in Hell for 10k years#she acts like a pissed off ex who had a bad breakup#but I digress this post isnât about that#itâs about Dream having personal experience of someone claiming to love him until they learn his identity#Hob flirting: so who are you? whatâs your name? ;)#Dream: *war flashbacks*

Just think, our next date for a possible teaser is March 22nd.
And since theyâve made a point to go out of their way to acknowledge it the past 2 years during hiatus, I think weâre in for not only birthdaygate confirmation, but also s5 content pertaining to birthdaygateâŠ
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/2c7be35653777d6a571b7404082546de/c6ad38bc23362fd3-76/s540x810/35a03c2bf989e39985c01d6473e5469d438c4beb.jpg)
#byler#stranger things#st5 speculation#birthdaygate#not to mention s5 opening with Will flashback#means that itâs the earliest content theyâve completed#so a Will focused teaser on his birthday confirming birthdaygate would be pretty epic and honestly quite easy for them to pull together#also gives time for fans to have to rewatch s4 for real and think about it from Willâs pov in a different away#along with picking up on all the birthday references#I didnât think the superbowl was happening either way#but we did get one for s2 which came out in late fall#so I thought it might be a small possibility#but tbh birthdaygate confirmation on Willâs birthday would be more epic amongst fans intrigue than a disjointed teaser#especially if they want to release teasers that each have some kind of focus#could also mean a teaser in may#and then july#and then trailer in late September#assuming the premiere of the first volume will be late November at the latest#either way weâre do for a teaser by the end of March#ITS HAPPENING#donât expect a trailer until Aug/Sept tho#if weâre lucky posters by then too#idec about all this#I just want that st5 inspo board stat

starting off with an amuse-bouche of some of my initial favorite bits! y'all, this update was WILD.
#art#twisted wonderland#twisted wonderland spoilers#twisted wonderland episode 7 spoilers#twisted wonderland book 7 spoilers#we really got it all in this update huh#we got flashbacks! backstory! shocking twists! cgs?!#we got the silver breakdown to end all silver breakdowns#the boy does not emote for 6 episodes straight and now it's POURING out and i am shoving my face directly into it#not to mention my favorite: action scenes represented by intensely wiggling the sprites around#and OF COURSE meleanor my beloved. your highness. ma'am. holy shit.#i guess it's mel instead of mal? hey she can spell her name however she wants#meleanor can do whatever she wants about anything. who is going to stop her.#meleanor: hold on baby. mommy wants to make a point. (yeets malleus' egg across the room into liia's face)#man though i am so afraid that crowley really might turn out to have been revaan this whole time#because this means we live in a world where dire fucking crowley managed to pull BOTH meleanor and lilia and i cannot accept that#briar valley are you okay. is it something in the water.#mrs. zigvolt took all the good taste and left none for anyone else

Thinking about Dick in cryo and hypothermia...
What if something went wrong during a Titans mission? Stranded for a bit somewhere cold, rescue took a little while? And Dick ends up going into cryosleep? Talons look pretty dead when in that mode, right?
The rest of the titans freaking out, especially since they still aren't really sure what species or what flavor of meta Nightwing is, and they don't know what to do... (Let them be somewhere where they can't get in touch with the Bats to ask)
All of them convinced Nightwing died, horrified and mourning, and trying to figure out how they will break the news to Batman and Robin...
And halfway through the discussion the 'corpse' just sits up.
Hardcore trauma for sure đđđđ
Lmao Wally would deadass be cradling Dickâs head so gently and heaving big, gut wrenching sobs and then Dick would justâ sit up. Blink.
âWhy are you crying so loud?â
And everyone just starts screaming.
(One of the Titans totally tries sneaking Dickâs pulse once theyâve all gone to sleepâ just to be sure Dick really is alive and they didnât dream itâ and promptly starts screaming again when thereâs none.
Dick is cranky about being woken up. Going to sleep without Jason in the nest is hard enough, did they HAVE to wake him up????
He softens significantly though and explains that, no, he does have a pulse. Itâs just really, REALLY slow. And a couple of seconds held to his wrist isnât gonna do it mate, sorry.)
#poor Wally#poor everyone really#dick is used to it by now#no more hardcore flashbacks when his core temp drops too low#itâs just an inconvenience by now#he should really have mentioned this to the titans#dick accidentally traumatizing his friends since day one#Jason canât stop laughing when dick tells him the story#jason todd#talon dick grayson#titans#batfamily#dick grayson#owl song
