Effective Weight Management During Menopause: The Role of Supplements and Lifestyle Changes
IntroductionMenopause is a natural phase in every woman's life, but it can bring about significant changes, particularly in weight management. During this time, hormonal shifts make it more challenging to maintain or lose weight. Managing weight gain during menopause is essential for overall health and well-being, helping women stay active and confident as they transition through this phase.
Understanding Menopause and Weight GainMenopause triggers hormonal changes, particularly a drop in estrogen levels, which affects metabolism and body composition. As metabolism slows, women may notice increased fat around the abdomen and difficulty losing weight, even with healthy eating and exercise habits. Additionally, these changes can lead to muscle loss, making it harder to burn calories efficiently. Weight gain during menopause is a common struggle, but understanding the factors behind it can help women find effective solutions.
The Role of Supplements in Weight ManagementSupplements can play an important role in supporting weight loss during menopause. The right supplements can help balance hormones, boost metabolism, and improve energy levels. It’s crucial to choose supplements that are specifically designed for menopause, as they target the unique challenges women face during this stage. Supplements can provide additional support where diet and exercise alone may fall short, promoting better weight management and overall health.
Key Ingredients to Look for in Menopause Supplements
Tumblr media
When choosing menopause supplements, it’s important to focus on ingredients that have been shown to support weight loss. Key ingredients include:
Calcium and Vitamin D: These help maintain bone health and reduce the risk of osteoporosis, which becomes a concern during menopause.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids: These healthy fats help reduce inflammation, support heart health, and can aid in weight loss by regulating metabolism.
Green Tea Extract: Known for its fat-burning properties, green tea extract boosts metabolism and helps burn calories more effectively.
Black Cohosh: This herbal extract is often used to balance hormones and reduce menopause symptoms like hot flashes, which can also impact weight.
Magnesium: Magnesium helps regulate blood sugar and insulin levels, making it easier to control cravings and manage weight.

I take pictures of everything I cook and eat in part so doctors will take my probably-steroid-related rapid weight gain seriously and try to figure out the root cause (because it's evidently an endocrine issue) instead of rolling their eyes and telling me to lay off the fried chicken and sugary soda or whatever. Girl I'm fat I eat like a dietician's dream in defense against medical malpractice. I would like to exercise more but nobody will treat my chronic pain and REPEATED SHOULDER DISLOCATIONS lmao

It most definitely affects my mood when there is no definable sunrise!
But nope. Life is what you make it. And I'm very lucky to have the ability and allowance to sit in the morning light, no matter what the quality, and enjoy my breakfast.
I didn't do much of a fast. Around 13.5hrs. Continuing my focus on....well.....relaxing the obsessive FOCUS, lol.
And I just scraped through the Menopause Reset tip of waiting two hours before having caffeine.
But scrape through I did!
That was after a pretty heavy upper body strength workout.
Wow, it feels good to get back into serious training!
Hello Monday, I'm ready for you!

surgeon suggested HRT without me even bringing it up first so I’m getting HRT!!! I mean I have to wait for my GP to give me the prescription but I’m speaking to her on Wednesday, I already have the clinic letter ❤️
Anyway there were no signs of recurrence so I’ve now been discharged and they only need to see me if I have any symptoms. Which is both good but also I cannot BELIEVE it has been two years since surgery. In some ways I feel like mentally I am still there and maybe always will be. I don’t really get how to move on from this. But time, as ever, doesn’t wait.

Let’s have a REAL conversation about aging and the changes our bodies go through.
If you’ve followed me awhile, you know I was 60 lbs overweight in my 20s. Got sick of the discomfort and yo-yo dieting, took responsibility, learned my mind and body, and became obsessed with nutrition. My nutrition and fitness has been dialed in for years and I know my body. Yet, despite doing everything right, I gained 10 lbs this last year. Perimenopause blindsided me.
I feel softer than I’ve been used to, hormones are going crazy, mood and body temp all over the place…. It’s humbling, to say the least. (Ladies, raise your hand if you feel me!? 🙋🏻‍♀️) Instead of fighting the natural process (which would only increase stress & work against hormone health), I’m staying curious and relearning me in this new phase. I’m determined to go through this new phase the best I can!
There is a RIGHT way to eat and exercise based on your cycle, or the phase of life you’re in. When I learned this new science, I realized I was pushing my body past the point of hormone balance. Fitness is such a mental release for me, but doing high-interval training during my luteal phase or in perimenopause was turning on fat storage and working against my hormone balance. The way we eat and move can either hurt or help hormone health. Learning and implementing this can make all the difference. More to come on this….

How the menopause is destroying my life (and why I still laugh about it - Just!)
Menopause is supposed to be a natural and normal part of aging for women, but let me tell you, it feels more like a cruel and unusual punishment. Ever since I entered this phase of life, I have been experiencing a range of symptoms that make me feel like I am losing my mind, my body, and my dignity. Here are some of the ways that menopause is destroying my life, and how I try to cope with them with a sense of humour.
Low libido. This is one of the most disappointing and frustrating symptoms of menopause. It is like having a switch for sex that turns it off completely or makes it painful or unsatisfying. No matter how much I love or desire my partner, I can’t seem to get aroused or orgasmic. Sometimes I feel like I am frigid or impotent. I have had to fake it or avoid it altogether to spare myself or my partner from embarrassment or disappointment. The only way I can deal with it is by communicating openly with my partner, trying new things or toys in bed, using lubricants or creams, and seeking professional help if needed.

Why You've Gained Weight & Can't Lose It
If you’re really honest, or maybe not so honest, with yourself, you can easily name the thing or set of things that let to your jeans being unbreathable. It doesn’t take us much to come up with the list of things that equated to that moment of laying on the bed, holding your breath, trying to button your jeans and praying the zipper doesn’t pop. It’s a horrifying moment and we’re hoping it’s…

As food transits past the duodenum, there is still an opportunity for iron absorption but less so as intestinal peristalsis carries the digested food forward. Surgical bypass of the duodenum also prevents physical contact of dietary iron with the duodenum to absorb iron as well. This is applicable to patients who have undergone Roux-en-Y gastric bypass for weight loss. Those patients should have a blood count and iron studies checked once or twice a year at a minimum and consider intravenous supplementation if dietary and oral iron is inadequate.
https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/living/iron-deficiency-anemia
This is part of the reason why I H-A-T-E gastric bypass surgeries. You are literally surgically making your body less able to unable to absorb certain nutrients, possibly having to take supplements all your life. And in this case, you can’t even take supplements, because you are physically incapable of absorbing them. Nutrients you need to stay alive. It is SO unethical.

My mother's nutritionist literally encouraged her to grill every vegetable instead of boiling it or just boiling it (even non-raw leafy greens, if they must be boiled, like broccoli, then they need to be pan grilled afterwards), with a bit of garlic and olive oil usually, and sometimes chilli. Apparently not only it doesn't make them less healthy, but it's overall more healthy to consume them that way than just boiling it, something something about the way of cooking it helping boost things and make sure your body absorbs all the nutrition and gets your organs well in motion to break everything down with less issues.
I also heard of multiple nutritionists who both teach you the right food combo to get the most out of a meal (taste included but also nutrients wise), as well as encouraging their patients to have a least a fried food meal (how friend depends on the person I think) a week, I think it has something something with activating the liver and intestine properly? These are also the same people who usually help patients who need to maintain a certain diet for health reasons (chemotherapy, surgery, colon disorders, allergies etc.)
But yeah, healthy doesn't necessarily mean boring or lacking taste, from my experience usually the opposite.
Tumblr media
#she literally referred to boiled only broccoli as being essentially just sugar#cause you get less benefits from that type of cooking overall#there are also food combo that boost things more#dried fruit with fresh fruit on a certain percentage#my brother's nutritionist is the same#some food combos allow you to benefit from nutritients you wouldn't have been able to extract as properly otherwise#food science is an amazing hack and fantastic#and not very well known#but as it turns out very tasty#also on that note a good nutritionist will know BMI is bullshit#they might take into account if you want to be thinner#but a. they will stop you when they believe you need to maintain fat for some reason#and b. they will make it clear that losing fat DOES NOT MEAN losing weight#in that case their goal is to help you build muscle so you can support your bones which - you guessed it - will keep your weight the same#if not increase it in a lot of cases#my ma wants to be thinner as part of her secondary goals (primary is managing colon disease and menopause)#she did go down in size but her weight is exactly the same#and her nutritionist told her she is not allowed to go down in fat from now on cause she needs a degree of fat storage at her age#but yeah run away from diets that want you to lose weight and boil everything and restrict meals they are red flags#my ma who didn't eat a lot most of her life started eating three times a day plus two snacks every day since meeting her nutritionist#her colitis got manageable and she got fried food in her diet#and she now eats ONE MAIN and A SIDE every main meal#and she is allowed dessert and a good breakfast and snacks throughout the day#she has very few restrictions and they are all related to her colitis or her allergies or her not liking the food#note: if she hates a food the nutritionist will NOT put it in her diet or even suggest it#her first question was what food my mother LIKED and what she was ABSOLUTELY going to want to eat frequently#she loves leafy greens and fish and rice so she has lotsa those#and she is encouraged to eat whatever pie it is she makes herself#and she is free to go out for dinner so long as she goes back to her routine the next day#she also has emergency plans for when her colitis acts up too much due to stress

Weight bearing exercise is ESPECIALLY important for anybody who is going to experience menopause (which includes the majority of cis women) because it is one of the best things you can do to protect your bone density, and it is extremely common to develop osteoporosis during menopause.
Weight bearing exercise is a category that includes strength training and also some other exercises like walking and yoga. The more of it you can do, the better your bone density will be now and as you age. It’s actually more than just the protection of the muscles - having to support weight, whether it’s your body weight while walking or weights you’re lifting, strengthens the bones themselves.
It's like the greatest lie of a lifetime to convince women not to muscle train and to only be focusing on cardio!!!! Muscle building and strengthening is sooo important for overall health and is critical to good health as you age as well - and I was taught my whole life that I should be doing cardio to be skinny and toned and that weight lifting makes you bulky and that it won't help me with anything!!! And that's so backwards!!!! So many older women in my family struggle with getting injured easily and break bones with even smaller accidents and it's so crazy how many generations of women have been tricked into making themselves small and frail with eating disorders and restriction and endless cardio to stay slim when what their body NEEDS is the protection of muscle!!!! HIT THE GYM GIRLS!!!! This society is trying to poison youuuu! Not eating destroys your organs long term and your bodies ability to heal itself!!!! Please eat well each day + put in some muscle which yes means weight gain but it's there to help you!!!!!!
