Listennn, I don't care what anyone says, medic characters in media are the fucking best. The battle between managing their emotions and distancing themselves a healthy degree from loss but also their love and devotion driving them to push through and try and do their best to save others, only to be destroyed when they cannot. How they try and cope with the situation they're put in - some by remaining quiet and distant, others trying to use jokes and levity to mask the pain. But GOD I love when a character who heals and saves others eventually comes to bend and breaks under the enormous pressure they're under and now other's have to find a way to save them. The people they've dedicated their lives to now trying desperately to hold tight and sooth the one who soothes them, to keep them whole and together not only due to that person being invaluable for what they do but also because everyone's come to love them for who they are as well.

I just read an article where a WWII medic by the name of John Burch of the 82nd Airborne Division discussed just how troubling of an environment the Battle of the Bulge was for a medic.
Under the Geneva Conventions medics were not allowed to carry weapons and were not supposed to be targeted. “The Germans didn’t respect at all,” Burch said.
Burch spent a lot of time at the hospital that had been set up in Reims after the Germans had just been ejected from the town, but he said that no one knew where the front lines were.
As the battle progressed, the wounded continued to flood in, as did some unwanted guests.
“Germans were dressed in American uniforms over their own and were dropping into areas by parachute.”
“(Once) some came in two ambulances dressed in American uniform and greatly hurt the medical staff of the 101st – they murdered really, the medics and we found out then it was not wise to be known as a medic.”
Let that set in.
German dressed in American uniforms hijacked ambulances in order to infiltrate the hospital, slaughtering doctors and medics.
The enemy was walking amongst them, purposefully targeting soldiers whose only mission for the war was to help their own.
To say it was “not wise to be known as a medic” was an understatement. The situation was so bad, in fact, that the general of the 101st Airborne offered some advice:
“The general of the 101st met with our commander and said, he couldn’t order us to carry weapons, but he advised that it was up to us. So, we taped over our steel helmets that had red crosses on them and hid our identification and were given pistols. We didn’t really know how to use them, but … we never put on our red crosses again.”
I wish they would have included a scene that shows this kind of thing because I think having to watch these unarmed angels of the battlefield cover up a symbol that was supposed to protect them would have been super powerful.

you know? gene and spina must've had an extra hard time with the men in bastogne. not having enough medical supplies with them. checking in on the men and feeling helpless when the men feel sick/are wounded because they can't do anything about their condition with the little supplies and equipment they have on hand. tired of hearing the men say they won't go to the aid station or get taken off the line when they really really need to rest and recuperate. frustrated whenever the men go awol from the aid station. they're the company medics but the men are just too stubborn and hardheaded to let them be medics

What if Gene was the one trapped in that barn in Nuenen instead of Bull? With all the chaos, how long would it take for someone to notice? Gene was always on the move, always floating between platoons and going whenever he was needed, so it might have taken them a little longer to realize he was missing.
In that case, who would be the first to notice? How would they react? Would they go searching for him or would they just assume the Germans got him seeing as how they had no qualms shooting Mampre? As a side note, with Al Mampre wounded and Gene MIA, Ralph Spina would be Easy Company’s only medic.
Gene doesn’t have a weapon, so how would he hide from the Germans? Or would that German have left him alone seeing as he’s just a single medic with no weapons or anyone accompanying him?

This is an example of a stabilization point in the Kharkiv region. This is where medics try their hardest to assist the wounded and save the lives of soldiers that get evacuated from the front lines. They are often hidden underground and constantly hunted by the Russians.
The entire process of evacuation and stabilization is difficult and dangerous. Spare a thought to the medics, Ukrainian and foreign, that take up this enormous task.

I'm not big on "Medic Coding that kicks in when medic sees an injury, urging them to fix it and making them uncomfortable if they don't" because . . . first, it seems detrimental to actually working in a hospital, and second, are all professions like this? Like, do accountant-bots have Accountant Coding urging them to do math at all times?
That said, I think there are some interesting concepts that could be drawn from that well since the Functionist government presumably created that coding.
Medic Coding that gives the medic the subconscious urge to prioritize repairs on higher-caste bots over low-caste bots
Medic Coding that causes the medic minor discomfort if they "waste" resources like painkillers on "undesirables"
Medic Coding that makes the medic's hands lock up if they try to repair a victim of empurata
Imagine Ratchet gritting his teeth all day long at his Dead End clinic, tormented by the tyranny of his coding, yet persevering.

there's always a healthy dose of fear to the hands of a medic. do what you can and know every step can ruin what life they have left; your hands are stained with blood that isn't yours and somehow that's worse; there's a cruelty to modern medicine and it's in the anesthetics and needles and the poker you've got in the fire, just in case; you can help, but honey, it'll hurt before it heals.
