It is essential to any reading of Star Wars that we remember that Star Wars is a story which uses multiple wars as storytelling devices to talk about virtue. It is not, despite the name, a war story. Even clone wars at its angstiest does not approach a war story. At least not as Tim O’Brien would define it:
“A true war story is never moral. It does not instruct, nor encourage virtue, nor suggest models of proper human behavior, nor restrain men from doing the things men have always done. If a story seems moral, do not believe it. If at the end of a war story you feel uplifted, or if you feel that some small bit of rectitude has been salvaged from the larger waste, then you have been made the victim of a very old and terrible lie. There is no rectitude whatsoever. There is no virtue. As a first rule of thumb, therefore, you can tell a true war story by its absolute and uncompromising allegiance to obscenity and evil.”

Why is Cole STILL here? He feels like a character taken from a different genre and forcibly shoved into spn.
And he gets the shit beat out of him repeatedly. But the show so badly wants us to believe he is badass and cool. It’s just makes him so much funnier.
He is season 10’s equivalent of scrappy doo in my eyes. I will not elaborate more.

when tim o'brien said that's what stories are for. when he said that stories are for joining the past to the future. stories are for those late hours in the night when you can't remember how you got from where you were to where you are. stories are for eternity, when memory is erased, when there is nothing to remember except the story. holy fuck.

Rough post-it doodles I made during Maths - I was just thinking a lot about Shifty (with ducklings) and Luz. Then I thought of how Ron loved dogs, and then I thought about Trigger the dog, and then I learned I can't draw dogs..Then there's Rat Kiley from The Things They Carried as I imagined him.

Rat Kiley isn't a liar; he sees the truth clearer than others, like Simon. The beast is in us, everywhere. Mary Anne might never have been real, but war corrupts absolutely. If Simon hadn't been murdered, he would've likely found a way to debilitate himself to escape from the paranoia/burden of his fears being realized. Rat Kiley shoots himself in the foot to get away from the horrors of war.

“If there is a theme to the whole book it has to do with the fact that stories can save our lives.”
“I believe in stories, in their incredible power to keep people alive, to keep the living alive, and the dead. And if I have started now to play with the stories, inside the stories themselves, well, that’s what people do all the time. Storytelling is the essential human activity. The harder the situation, the more essential it is. In Vietnam men were constantly telling one another stories about the war. Our unit lost a lot of guys around My Lai, but the stories they told stay around after them. I would be mad not to tell the stories I know.”
--Tim O'Brian, about The Things They Carried
