Author's Notes: more caretaking for crushed Shae!
Content Warnings: tiny whump, faerie whump, crushed, broken bones, severe injury, painful healing, magical healing, pain medicine, 'it' as a pronoun
----
Clara must have fallen asleep, because the next thing she knows morning light is peeking in through the curtains. The witch wakes with a big yawn and stretch. Something hits the ground with a thud and she jumps, but it was only the book she fell asleep reading falling from her lap onto the floor.
After sitting up and stretching again, Clara notices another, quieter sound that she hadn't a moment ago - soft whimpers made by the injured faerie she found yesterday, discarded at the edge of the woods.
It looks even more frail than the day before. She wonders when it last had food or water, what sort of condition it was in even before it was crushed nearly to death. It moans feebly and its tiny lashes flutter as it wakes. By now the potion's effects are subsiding, and Clara glances to the clock to get an idea of how often she will need to give the faerie another dose.
She is about to do just that when she remembers something she read the night before. She picks up the fallen book and sets it on the table, and flips through it to one of her bookmarked pages. It's a spell for healing broken bones, sort of. Clara doesn't have the skill or the ingredients to pull off the most effective version, which would heal all the bones at once. But there is a simpler version for just a few bones at a time that she thinks she can pull off. The only problem is...it can't be used alongside other potions. She can only use the spell when the pain medicine wears off.
Before she begins, though, she gives the faerie some water and juice. Clearly parched, it drinks too much too quickly and hoarse coughs wrack its mangled body. Now it is fully awake, and feeling everything.
"Hang in there, okay?" Clara says, quickly getting to work gathering what she needs for the spell. Somehow she is going to have to choose one part of the faerie to heal first. And she fears if she tries to do too many back-to-back, the poor thing won't be able to withstand it, and will die in agony. That's the last thing she wants. So...this is going to take time. She'll heal some bones, give it medicine, let it rest, heal some more.
Clara decides to start with its ribs. The damage to them is so severe that part of the faerie's torso is concave, dark with bruising, and it struggles to breathe. Once her ingredients are ground up and mixed, Clara tips the tip of one finger into the fine powder. She gingerly strokes that finger back and forth across the skin over the faerie's shattered ribcage, flinching slightly in sympathy at how it throbs. The faerie cries out in pain at the slightest touch.
"I'm so sorry," she whispers, then begins the incantation. As she speaks, the bones begin to mend. She can hear them snap back into place, can feel them reform beneath her finger.
The fairy screams and cries; it begs her to stop. Tears trickle down Clara's face but she continues until every last piece is back in place. Even when she removes her hand the faerie continues sobbing, but once it realizes it can breathe again it takes several deep, heaving breaths.
"I'm sorry," Clara says again, wiping her eyes. She hurries to mix some of the pain potion with some juice and gives the faerie a substantial dose. She holds it and strokes its hair until the potion kicks in. The faerie sighs and goes limp against her palm.
The witch settles the little body back onto its bed and tucks it in, safe and warm in the bundle of towels. Then she sets a timer and curls up in her chair with another book to wait.

@selenophilephile So since you’re a medic nin, does that mean I can come to you for cough treatment whenever? Like, weekly? Semi daily? Daily? *Coughs*
I’m no specialist, Hayate. I’m a Field Medic. If it gets bad properly you need to go see a hospital doctor. But I can reduce the inflammation and soothe the irritation in your lungs when nothing else is helping before you go to the hospital, or on a particularly bad day in general. I can also clear airways in a pinch but that’s a T&I tactic after waterboarding someone and not the most pleasant.
Back to your question though: swing by my place and if I’m off duty or even during the day on my lunch break if you need it and I’ll do what I can.

i just saw a tik tok of a nurse explaining what to do in case of hyperkalemia. the first comment on the video?
"good thing im in psych cuz i dont get all of that" and then a bunch of people agreeing
like...you do realize...the psych ward is STILL A WARD IN A HOSPITAL, psych patients STILL DESERVE AND NEED THE BASIC CARE ALL OTHER FACILITIES PROVIDE, and electrolyte imbalances ARE something to watch out for (can be the underlying cause for acute psych symptoms like confusion)?????
im so tired of psychiatry being undervalued like this, and seeing people like that working in the system with vulnerable patients makes me sick

Osteoarthritis, possible bone spurs, at least one tendon nodules, and ran out of pain meds. What do I do? KT Tape
Yes, the cheap KT tape at Walmart actually works. Sometimes, it is better than the more expensive tape but only lasts about three days when water is involved, like a shower.
Tumblr media
[ID: To tape for swelling in any area of the body, follow these steps:
To begin, start with one fan-cut
Apply the anchor proximally to the area of swelling, ideally close to a lymphatic drainage point.
Remove the backing of the kinesiology tape up to the tail ends of the fan strip.
Apply the tails over the swollen area at 25% tension.
Rub the kinesiology tape down onto the skin to ensure optimum adhesion.]

Author's Notes: procrastinating on one tiny whump story to work on another? very on brand for me.
Content Warnings: tiny whump, faerie whump, broken bones, severe injury, painful healing, healing magic
----
Clara gave the faerie such a hefty dose of the pain potion that it sleeps through the night, which allows her to go to bed and do the same, though she wakes early to check on it. No...not it. She isn't sure what the faerie would prefer, but saying it feels like...well, like she's treating the faerie the same way other witches have - like a thing. An ingredient.
By the time the faerie stirs again it is early afternoon. Clara has been alternating between tidying and preparing for the next healing spell when she hears his little moans start up again. She goes to be with him, petting his hair as he wakes. His eyes are bleary and confused at first, the pain setting in before he remembers why he's in it. He stares up at Clara until he understands. Then he throws his head back with a cry, body spasming as the last of the potion's relief fades away.
"I need to fix some more of your broken bones," Clara says quickly, hoping he understands. "Like before."
The faerie peers up at her with fear and shakes his head. "Please, no..."
Clara chews on her lip, feeling awful. "You're still in really bad shape...it could take months to heal on its own. It will be quick, and when it's done I'll give you more medicine, I promise."
The faerie whimpers, his lip trembling, but takes a shaky breath and nods. Clara lets out a sigh of relief.
"Where do you need it most? What hurts the worst?"
It takes the faerie a moment to answer; most likely, everything hurts and it is hard to choose. He feebly tries to lift a hand but his broken shoulders and collarbone prevent this and he cries out again. "Hips," he pleads. As if in confirmation, the lower half of his body gives another little spasm.
"Not your shoulders?" she asks. The faerie shakes his head. "Alright. Just hang in there. Here, hold this." She hands him a torn off piece of a sponge to squeeze in one of his shaking hands.
Clara mixes up the powder for the spell and dips her fingertip into it. "Here goes..." She spreads the powder over his hips in a gentle figure-eight motion, whispering the incantation. She can feel the bone jutting up in ways it shouldn't, and as she speaks, it begins to shift. With a sudden, sharp crack it snaps back into place.
The faerie screams, his back arching up from the table. Clara continues until she is positive the bone has knitted back together completely before she removes her touch. Though the spell can mend the breaks, it does nothing for the rest of the faerie, not for torn muscle and nerves nor bruised flesh. If anything, the unnaturally rapid healing only makes those things worse.
She cradles the faerie in both her palms until his tremors and cries subside. He opens his eyes but doesn't speak; his anguished expression is absolutely heartbreaking.
Clara gives him sips of water, nibbles of fruit, and several large drops of medicine. She wraps him gently in a towel and cradles the little bundle to her until the faerie falls into a deep sleep.

To be continued...?

Recently I’ve just been having a lot of thoughts about the bone tumor I had and how I was in honestly really terrible pain for about a year. It was 7 months of intermittent pain and then 6 months of near constant pain. During those 6 months, I went through over 1000 ibuprofen tablets because this type of tumor responds to nsaids and nothing else for pain management. I literally could not sleep through the night without taking multiple ibuprofens. I was taking between 4 and 6 every day and occasionally up to 8. I saw multiple doctors and tried multiple (expensive) things before they even diagnosed it as a tumor.
It was a rare tumor in an even rarer location that doesn’t necessarily show up in x rays. One of its hallmarks is literally just causing pain. And it was on the bottom of my big toe so sometimes every step I took was painful.
And then I had a miracle surgery and the pain was completely gone in like 2 weeks and it was such a clean procedure that I have had 0 follow up visits. I was living in Minnesota not too far from the Mayo Clinic at the time so I went there for it and I realize how fortunate I am to have had access to that medical care.
I think it’s on my mind because I’ve seen a lot of posts about chronic pain recently and that tumor was definitely a sort of chronic pain— It was consistent pain for over a year that was debilitating. But it just left so quickly and easily after the surgery that I feel like a fraud when I have opinions on chronic pain.

Pinched disc vs. vertebral compression: what's the difference?
Often confused, a slipped disc and a vertebral compression are two quite distinct back problems.
What is a slipped disc?
- A worn disc: The disc between two vertebrae loses height
- Causes: Wear and tear due to age and repeated strain
- Symptoms: Pain, stiffness, sometimes sciatica.
What is vertebral compression?
- A fracture: a vertebra collapses in on itself
- Causes: osteoporosis, trauma, disease
- Symptoms: pain, deformity of the spine.
Why is it important to know the difference?
- Treatment: Each problem requires specific treatment
- Progression: The long-term consequences are not the same.
To sum up:
- Slipped disc: Problem with the intervertebral disc
- Compressed vertebra: Fracture of a vertebra.
If you suffer from back pain, consult a health professional for a precise diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

some bluecollar!simon as a treat
“what the fuck d’ya think you’re doing? get back in bed.” simon growls at you, ignoring your whines of protest as he drags you back to the bedroom, leaving his work lunch unfinished on the counter
“you’re too sick to be out of bed.” he grumbles, ignoring the heart eyes you give him at his aggressive love, “stop lookin’ at me like tha’
you giggle followed by a pained groan from the strain on your achy muscles as simon tucks the bedsheets in around you. “can’t help it, you’re so good to me, si… if I don’t make it through this… just know…”
he shakes his head at you, cutting off your dramatic joke with two hands on either side of your face and a firm kiss on your forehead, “don’t die before you fix that hole in my work trousers.”
he chuckles at his own stupidity when he feels your foot poke out from under the covers to kick his thigh, “right, I’ll be ‘ome after work and I’ll pick up food from that dingy cafe you like.”
you blow him a kiss as he grabs his stuff and makes his way towards the bedroom door, “if yer want anymore of that medicine, it’s in my bedside drawer.” he calls out before he leaves
you smile to yourself when you hear the front door slam, missing him already but you know the bills have been extra high recently so he can’t afford to miss work, your poor man has been working himself to the bone picking up as many shifts as he can
you’ll soon discover the real reason he’s been working so much when you open the bedside drawer later that day, looking for the medicine, only to find a small velvet box stashed in the corner :)
