Going to go off in a reblog here about the dialogue and delivery of potp because I keep thinking about how much subtitles get wrong. Thank you for making a script, by the way!

I initially had a whole plan of what I wanted to type and it was very organized and sophisticated but when I actually went to type it it crumbled apart, hopefully this is coherent and seems to be saying something.

The mention of Winslow at the end had me thinking about how William Finley delivers his lines like “well that’s funny,” when being told his name isn’t written on the music at Swanage, or when he calls a security guard “buster” when he’s being carried out of Swanage. This, of course, establishes Winslow as kind of a silly guy. He’s quite quirky. Naive. This is reflected upon in the score, of course, and it’s brought back up much later (as in the score is) in the movie. Even as the Phantom, he retains that same quality to his voice and his line delivery. Anyway.

Finley’s voice was edited in post to make it sound the way it sounds when he’s the phantom, leading to some misheard lines and inconsistent effects. The one that sticks out to me most is when Phoenix and Winslow are on the Paradise’s roof and he grabs her and says “or Swan’ll destroy you too!” which is often subtitled as “or I’ll destroy you too!” when, to me and to people I’ve had watch the movie, it does sound more like “Swan[ wi]ll” which makes more sense. Winslow means Phoenix no harm, of course.

And the score during that part is the same as when Winslow and Phoenix meet. I’m not sure what that song is called, I wish there was an album or something that was just the movie’s score. I tend to call it Winslow’s Theme or Winslow and Phoenix’s theme, as it comes up when both Winslow and Phoenix are involved. You know the one, when Winslow is coming out of his room and into Swan’s weird tape storage. The one that plays when Phoenix is looking in the mirror after Beef dies and Swan lays out his plan. Anyway. It’s not just Finley’s voice performance reflecting that Winslow hasn’t changed, but also the score, with the same theme playing in moments of curiosity, or of Winslow demonstrating that he’s still the same man he was before meeting Swan.

I dunno, just thought it was something interesting.

So I'm going through the entire Phantom of the Paradise movie and editing a proper script for it. (The fandom is TINY so I have to rely on myself to notice little details 😭😅)

Do you think sometimes when the team has a movie night, when they watch those 60's action war movies like "Von Ryan's Express" and "Battle of the Bulge" or spaghetti westerns like "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" and "Death Rides on a Horse," Soldier pauses during or right after fight scenes or duels or whatever to obsessively overanalyze them. Like, he'll try and turn them into strategies to use on the job, takes, uhm, 'notes', (tactical doodles,) sets up nerdy models using a whiteboard map and improvised figurines, uses these examples when he does those psyche-up pre-battle speeches or during strategy meetings.

'Cause I bet he does, I bet he does that, and it completely kills the momentum of the movie to the point where the rest of the team gets disinterested and slowly leaves him behind to do their own thing.

I genuinely bet Engie wouldn't though, nah, I bet he's enough of a patient kind of gentle kind of man willing to stick through these pauses 'cause he's just that into the movie. And maybe he's just a teeny bit into Soldier's dissections of actiony chaos. Maybe gleans a bit of an understanding of Soldier's thinking that way. Admires the guy's passion about his 'research,' how thoughtfully he gathers details in an effort to help the team. Starts mixing in tapes for these sorts of movies more regularly to their movie night pool maybe subconsciously, maybe on purpose. The rest of the team doing their own movie night. losers.

Ok actually one thing that really really bothers me about how widespread people are negatively reacting to the anime just for the fact that anime onlys are going to be in the fandom is like

Like… not everyone can sit down for several hours and read a visual novel. It’s very time and focus intensive. Not everyone can read logs of the dialogue on wikis, either. There are several people who are unable to enjoy this story based solely on medium. A good example is my qpp; he loves TWST. He loves the story. He loves the characters. But he can’t get past Book 3 because the format is completely inaccessible to him. He’s tried. I’ve tried with him. He just… cannot do it. The novels are a godsend because it’s a way he can finally read the story in a format that works for him. The anime will also help a lot because he’ll be able to hear the voice acting, which is a very important part of TWST’s story telling.

Or even just in general, I don’t think I need to post about how I Like Horror, but I am unable to read anything longer than a short story. In particular, I am almost fully unable to read King because of how incompatible his writing style is- despite really wanting to. I have tried and failed to read Pet Sematery more times than I can count. The 80’s movie, though? I love it. It lets me experience a very important work to the genre in ways I would otherwise be completely unable to. Same with Misery.

Like… it’s super frustrating to see people advocate for story accessibility in things like video games, only to turn around and say “except for things I LIKE, they’ll get my favs wrong!!!” Especially when it’s in a fairly inaccessible medium.

I especially have a bone to pick with Idia fans I see on Twitter doing this. There’s a lot of fear “normies” will be ableist about their favorite cartoon character, while… in the process being extremely ableist to actual human beings. It’s extremely frustrating and upsetting to see people prioritize their (heavily mentally disabled, I might add) favorite fictional character over actual irl disabled people. I don’t think people, especially autistic people who can’t do VNs, should be limited from a beautiful story just because other people you can block Might Make Incel Jokes.

Like… get your fucking priorities straight. I was hyperfixated on Danganronpa when the DR1 anime came out. I was hyperfixated on Persona 4 when the P4 anime came out. Ace Attorney has been one of my absolute favorite series since middle school, and I was going through my obligatory hyperfixation phase I have every few years when the AA anime came out. I massively prefer the YuGiOh manga to the DM anime.

Anime onlys are EXTREMELY easy to avoid and are not the fucking end of the world.

Especially in a fandom with so many autistic people. Have some empathy for disabled people who have different symptoms than you do.

I'm surprised it took me this long to get into Gravity Falls. Anyways this has both SFW and NSFW so beware. There's also a brief mention of being AFAB as a possibility but other than that it's completely gender neutral (I'm 99% sure, I didn't proofread too well lol).

Right off the bat, I’m saying he’s autistic because so am I and I said so.

If you’re someone who needs reassurance or is generally anxious/paranoid about anything he’ll go into long (often scientific) explanations to ease your mind and also throw in some fun facts.

Both a listener and a yapper. He loves nothing more than the sound of your voice but also loves being able to spout all sorts of things about his research and interests while you stare at him lovingly.

Can’t sleep unless you’re next to him. You don’t even need to be cuddling, your presence is just the one thing he needs to fall asleep.

That being said, he will NEVER pass up an opportunity to cuddle. Watching a movie? Cuddling. Working at his desk in the lab? Cuddling on his lap. Cooking something in the kitchen? He’s got his arms wrapped around you as he presses loving kisses into your temple.

He rarely swears, but when he does it always makes you do a double-take (and maybe giggle because it sounds so odd coming from him).

Probably tried weed once or twice in the '70s and was somewhat part of the psychedelic rock scene. Stan has some old photos of him during that time somewhere but Ford is absolutely mortified by the idea of you seeing him in bell-bottom jeans.

It doesn’t matter how long you two have been together, every time he sees you he feels the same as he did the day you two met. Ford will never stop becoming flustered at the sight of you.

Post-Weirdmaggedon he became very anxious at the thought of you being out alone or not being near him. He feels like he needs to be on guard at all times so that he can protect you. He eventually calms down after some reassurance from you and a fuck ton of therapy.

While he lacks some emotional intelligence he’s actually very attentive and knows exactly what you need when you’re upfront about your feelings. As long as you’re not vague and communicate, he knows what to do to help you.

Adding onto that, I think he briefly studied psychology in college so he’d have a pretty good understanding of any mental health issues you might have.

Said “No more Mr Nice Guy” one time and hasn’t heard the end of it from anyone.

Can I ask you to do a post about Disney & disability please? You mentioned it and I’d love to know more!

Well, my notifications can't get any messier, so why not?

This post got very, very long because I ended up talking about a lot of the accessibility solutions in detail (and... ranting about how accessibility at Universal was so bad that I got physically injured there) so I'm putting it under a cut for you.

To preface this, I have mobility issues (as well as a lot of food intolerances/allergies) and general chronic illness, my sister is Deaf, and I have friends who regularly attend the park with autistic family members with high support needs. These are the disabilities I have experience with, so while I've heard a bit about others (such as portable descriptive devices for visitors with visual impairments) I can't speak as much about those accommodations.

I have also traveled quite a bit, mostly as a disabled adult. I can work from anywhere and my family enjoys traveling, so I've been very lucky in this regard. I also used to live in central Florida, not too far from Disney, and benefited from their FL resident rates.

So I'm coming at this from a person who has a lot of experience traveling while disabled and a fair amount of experience going to WDW, though I haven't been nearly as often since I moved out of Florida.

(Good fucking riddance.)

So know that I am speaking from experience when I say I have never, without exception, been to a single place half as accessible as Walt Disney World. It is literally the reason my family would go there; it was one of the only places we could all safely go together. One of the only places I've been on earth that even approached their level of thoughtful accommodations is Barcelona, which apparently did significant renovations throughout the city in order to prepare for the 1992 Paralympics.

(Hey, if anyone is reading this from Barcelona: I teared up the first time I used one of your curb cuts in my wheelchair, just so you know.)

Going through those parks in a wheelchair is a breeze, though you will probably have to fight a lot of clueless parents with strollers who are hellbent on using resources intended for wheelchair-users and then glaring at you when you try to use them yourself. Level ground, spacious sidewalks, accessible transportation, well-kept gradual ramps, roomy buildings, lots of accessible restrooms, alternate entrances at many rides for wheelchair users, special wheelchair rows in movie theaters that we're loaded into first, accessible queues in most rides designed or renovated in the last fifteen years, special viewing areas for shows/parades/fireworks so you don't end up staring at able-bodied butts for a half hour...

Like, structurally-speaking, the parks are very easy to get around in if you're a wheelchair user. That was built in and you can see a lot of very mindful design choices. As far as the rides go, most of their rides actually have special cars that you can load into while still in a wheelchair. They're pretty neat. I can transfer, but that means often leaving my wheelchair and/or cane with a cast member during the ride. They are always, without fail, waiting for me on the other side of the ride, no matter how far the exit is from the entrance. I have never once had a problem with this. A cast member will be there to put my assistive devices in my hand before I even have to think about getting up. Guaranteed.

Wheelchair users always used to be able to skip the line, but there was unfortunately a problem with able-bodied people pretending to be disabled to skip lines (because god forbid they not have access to a single thing we have to make our lives livable) so now there's a system where if you cannot wait in a line, they'll basically give you a special time to come back that's equivalent to the length of the line. Which feels fair to me as someone who often cannot be in even an accessible line for extended periods. (I have problems with sunlight, heat, and often need emergency food or restroom.)

More important than all this, though, is the fact that cast members are impeccably well-trained in all of this. Any disabled person can tell you that the most accessible design on earth isn't worth shit if the people working there aren't well-trained. (More on this later, when I take a giant shit on Universal Studios.) But Disney trains their employees, many of whom are disabled themselves, incredibly well.

Every employee will know where the accessible entrances are. Every employee will know the procedure for getting a return time. Every employee will know about first-aid centers, and every employee will know where the quiet areas are for people with sensory issues. Every time you make a reservation for a meal, hotel room, transportation, etc. they will ask for all accessibility needs and they'll be ready for you.

Every waiter you have will be incredibly careful and knowledgeable when it comes to special dietary needs, and chefs will often come out to discuss them with you. They often have specific menus for different dietary needs, and they are scrupulous when it comes to allergens. I have a few intolerances that suck and allergies that could kill me and I have always felt very safe in their hands. This ranges from fancy sit-down restaurants to quick service burger places.

And -- honestly, I have just always been treated with respect. I know that sounds like a low bar, but most people do fail to clear it. Disney has their employees very well-trained on how to interact with disabled guests. People speak directly to me, never to the able-bodied people over my head. They never treat me like I'm a child. They never ask invasive questions or make uncomfortable jokes. They never, ever get impatient with my accessibility needs.

The few times I have misjudged things and have injured myself or gotten extremely ill, they were professional and caring as they provided much-needed first-aid. It's kind of embarrassing to be doted on by a costumed character while you wait for a doctor to come help you sit up again, but also kind of endearing, I'll admit.

They also, in addition to captioning all videos in the park, have some of the best sign language interpreters in the world, bar none. They're very personal and professional, they're easy to reserve, they will always be in a visible place during shows, and they're incredible performers as well as being very technically proficient. In addition to the professional interpreters, many cast members, performers, and characters can sign as well.

In addition to that, and this brings me to my next point, you'll meet a lot of disabled employees throughout the park. In front-facing positions. Deaf employees, employees using mobility aids, etc. They're well-known to hire disabled people and treat them well. This is. Fuck, this is incredibly rare, I say as someone who was never able to find a job in Florida with my health conditions. It's the moral thing to do to hire disabled people, but also -- selfishly, there's something so heartening and normalizing about seeing people who look like you working at the park. I'm happy every single time.

I have a little less personal experience when it comes to accessibility for neurodivergence, despite being neurodivergent myself, but I've been told that Disney is very, very accommodating for people on the spectrum. A lot is done to lessen crowding, waiting, sensory overload, etc. for autistic guests. Cast members are usually super good at this; finding designated quiet areas, helping autistic guests avoid more crowded areas, keeping them out of long lines, making sure they have access to any particular experiences that are special to them, etc.

For folks who need help from their group, whether that's an autistic child who needs to be with a parent or a disabled adult who needs someone to push their wheelchair or anything else, Disney has a rider switch-off model. In other words, if you're there with both of your able-bodied parents, for example, and you need one of them to be with you at all times and you don't want to be on the ride yourself, Disney will allow one person to go on the ride while the other waits for them to finish, then will allow the second person to go on without any additional wait. This makes sure that everyone in the family gets equal access without leaving disabled people alone. (Which... can be a very shitty feeling, I assure you.)

I know that Disney has also pioneered a lot of assistive technology. The accessible rides, obviously, which can be ridiculously cool (like Toy Story Midway Mania has an accessible car with alternative "guns" for people with dexterity limitations so they can play the carnival games as well) but also handheld assistive devices for visually impaired guests, etc. Like they are literally inventing new forms of accessibility technology, which is so cool.

And honestly, I'm always learning about new ways they assist disabled guests. I've stayed in Disney's accessible hotel rooms before (they're very nice!) but I don't like to swim so I've never been in the pools. But even just this week, someone told me that Disney has pool lifts for disabled guests, which I had never even considered. That's so cool.

The best part about accessibility at Disney is that in some ways it's very casual. A lot of their design decisions are so intuitive that you never even notice how accessible the parks are until you go somewhere where that's... not the case.

Like -- just so you don't assume that any of these things are industry standard, let me tell you about the two times I went to Universal, a park very close to Disney. I went there once for an event and once with my family.

The first time I went was for an event at the opening of the Harry Potter park. (This was before JKR made her most appalling views public, to be clear.) It... was frustrating. Guests asked if there would be food and drink available for people with special dietary restrictions (such as sugar-free butterbeer) and were pretty much told that no, that was not something they were interested in pursuing. It became very obvious very quickly that the park itself was so narrow that it only barely fulfilled ADA standards -- when empty. We were told that JKR had actually specifically insisted that it feel "cramped". Which is a nice way to say that I couldn't actually get around in any of the stores while people were in them.

It was overall a frustrating experience, but it was like. One night. I figured it was probably a fluke and they were still ironing out all the details. So I ended up going back with my parents later.

Y'all, it was a shit show.

Broken elevators that prevented disabled guests from accessing rides. Performers being up on raised platforms/sidewalks so disabled guests couldn't get to them. Sidewalks being made inaccessible by putting movable signs directly in the middle of them. Stores (even outside of the HP part) that were so damn narrow that I actually ended up getting hurt trying to navigate one of them. And no -- it was not easy to get first aid.

And my god, was the training bad. We went to one of the new HP rides, asked if there was a specific entrance for disabled guests. We were told no. We waited for a very long time in a line that honestly I shouldn't have been waiting in, but I wanted to be a good sport. I was pretty sick by the time we got through it, and the line itself had some very dangerous inclines/turns for wheelchair users. We get to the front of the line -- and the employee asks why we didn't just use the accessible entrance. 🙃

(Side note: several of their rides are also just unrideable if you don't fit within a pretty narrow body type of thin and able-bodied, so... there's that.)

We'd asked repeatedly and gotten incorrect answers, and I'd been put in physical danger as a result. Wild. I started to notice that if you asked different employees, you'd get different answers about almost anything, really. Just exceptionally poor training. Even stuff that should've been a no-brainer, like loading wheelchair users into a stationary movie theater, ended up creating chaos when they did it incorrectly and we had a giant wheelchair pileup.

Like -- let me stress to you that many of the things that happened could have caused actual injury to people. Some of these situations were dangerous. And some of them were just alienating, like when I'd have to wait outside a store while my family could go in.

I never went back after that. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ We just kept going to Disney.

One thing that'll probably show how good Disney is at accessibility is the whole Make-A-Wish thing. A lot of people know that it's a popular Make-A-Wish request, and you're likely to see at least a couple kids with Make-A-Wish buttons during your visit if you keep an eye out. One reason for this, is that, y'know, Disney World is fun. Kids want to go there. But more important, I think, is that Disney can accommodate people with at-times severe medical needs. Those kids can safely go anywhere and do anything in those parks that able-bodied kids can, and that's important.

All in all, the parks are just so accessible and you will never, ever be made to feel like you're lesser for needing those accommodations. You will be treated so well and you will not have to worry about accessibility because the cast members are always doing it for you. They'll usher you into the correct entrance as soon as they see a mobility device, and they'll do it with a very warm welcome. It's one of the very few places on earth where I have never felt like a burden.

Again, y'know, I know that Disney does not have a perfect track record on a lot of issues. I would never defend them from rightfully earned criticism. I strongly support labor action against them, and I do think they should be criticized whenever they fuck up. I have been uncomfortable with the sheer amount of power they have both in Florida and in the entertainment world just because no one should have that much power. But I am far more uncomfortable with that power being stripped away for blatantly discriminatory political reasons.

I do have some loyalty to Disney just because there is no other place on earth where I've been able to safely have fun with my friends with so little agony. That's... I mean, it's important, really. To be able to just exist in public without getting grief for it. How we ended in the darkest timeline

I actually wanted to talk a bit more about the French Revolution, but given recent events, I fear like I need to talk about this for now. Mainly because over the weekend I had so many talks about this, and have reached the point where I just need this blog to link back to.

You know how people keep joking about how we ended up in the darkest timeline, right? Well, what can I say? It is probably right. And by now I can tell you pretty definitely why.

Now mind you, like with everything there is a multitude of reasons for this. Technically we can go and say: Yes, we are here because colonialization happened - and it would not be wrong. We can also say that it is because of Napoleon, and because the failure of the French Revolution - and that would not be entirely wrong either. And we absolutely have to also say, that a bit reason is that instead of fighting fascism everyone decided after WWII, that fighting communism would be so much more important.

But I think a lot of the stuff we deal with right now is very much linked to one specific thing: The 2008 financial crisis - and the lack of regulation that lead up to it.

This is the moment where I am gonna tell you to watch The Big Short. I know most of you have probably not done that before. Because the movie feels like Oscar bait and also, who wants to watch a 2 hour movie about the financial market, but trust me on this: The movie is actually made really well and explains what happened back then very, very well and in a way that at least hits my autistic humor very well.

But basically, you need to understand two things: For the longest time the financial market really only traded companies and investments into them. But at some point during the late 70s and early 80s someone realized that there is something they were not trading on: depts. Because obviously most credits are given out by the banks and the financial industry. Not really investments, because there is a promise this stuff gets paid back eventually. And so they started trading depts with each other.

If you do not see the problem with this, let me explain: If you buy the dept someone has with another company, you basically are just making a bet with them the long way around. If you buy a dept, you bet that the person will pay the debt back - if you sell it, you kinda are betting against it.

There is a lot of weird financial tooks for this kinda stuff, but this is what it comes down to. The financial market became more and more a big ass casino, only that other than any other gambling it was not treated as this - and the money they were using on gambling was actually money that did not belong to them.

Because here is the thing: The main players in the financial market are either banks or groups that invest for their customers. While in the second case the people at least are fully aware of the fact that the financial institution will trade with their money, a lot of bank customers are not really aware of this. Sure, they kinda know that when they keep their money at the bank they might get interest, but most of them do not understand why. Because really, it does never get fully explained to them, that the bank will use that money to trade and invest with it.

And this is kinda part of the issue.

See, what happened in 2008 was, that the banks traded with indexes (so basically bundles) of thousands and thousands of house mortgages. And in those bundles were so called sublime mortgages, which is financial speak for "dog shit mortgages we knew the people taking them out would be unable to pay, but we didn't give a fuck". And a lot of those mortgages were due in 2008, which is why those indexes failed in 2008, resetting their value to close to 0. But the banks had spend money on those indexes as if they had an actual value. Especially because it was always the common wisdom, that mortgages were one of the most secure financial tools.

So. Now, what happens when you spend money on something that you think is an investment, but turns out to be completely worthless? Eh?

Yeah, exactly, you just threw a lot of money into the wind. And that money now was GONE. The big financial companies were just out of money. The money had simply disappeared, which is always what happens when a financial bubble burst.

See, financial bubbles happen when people overestimate how much something is going to be worth. They expect something to raise in value, so that when it ultimately fails a lot of people have put money into it which will just be GONE.

Gone, baby, gone.

But again: The money the banks had been using was mostly not their money. It was the money of their customers. Some of whom understood that risk. Many of them did not. So basically, if you had any of your money on the bank, this money technically still belonged to you - but it was not there. And of course there were also literally hundred-thousands of people working for those companies, who were now out of money.

And this is where we come to the reason why we are living in the darkest timeline.

I know it sounds cynical coming from a lefty like me, but sadly... Yeah, Obama was a big, big reason of why it came to this. While this happened towards the end of the Bush administration, for the most part it was Obama dealing with the fall-out.

See, the government at the time had three options:

Do nothing. Accept that the money is gone and deal with the consequences. Build something new from the ashes.

Give out some securities for the private people who lost their money. Basically some form of check to get back up to amount X of money that you lost becuase of the banks, but prosecute the people in finance, who had messed it up. Also create laws to control the financial market and trade volume, as well as the size of banks.

Save the banks by basically paying their depts for them.

The administration decided to choose Option 3. They saved the banks to save the people's finances and all those jobs bound to the banking industry.

There were no laws. No controls. No checks and balances. And there was basically no prosecution of the people who had let this happen - partly because they did not care, and partly because they were dumb fuckers.

And pretty much everything that has happened since is in some way connected to that. Literally everything!

I mean, if you want to know what I mean with that? The MCU exists because of the 2008 banking crisis! Yeah, the fucking Marvel Cinematic Universe. The reason that streaming is fucked and your favorite shows get cancelled after one or two seasons is heavily connected to the 2008 financial crisis.

The 2008 financial crisis is also connected to the surge in right wing politics all around the world. Because the financial crisis did not only hit the USA, but the rest of the world as well. A lot of people lost their jobs because of it, and because the financial industry did not get controlled and from this learned that they could fuck up however much they liked ("too big to fail") the gap between the rich and poor got worse. Which then the right wingers used to make people angry against minorities.

And of course because all of this started with unrealistic sets for mortages, mortages were suddenly much harder to get and it ended up pretty much impossible to afford a home - just as most of millenials were leaving school.

After all: Nobody really understood, what happened during the financial crisis. Because most people stop following any explanation as soon as they hear stuff like "shorts" and "sublime mortages". So it was much easier to think that the reason that you lost your job and could no longer afford a home was because some immigrant took it, rather than that some white collar idiots at wallstreet made some trades that you could not even begin to understand.

But yeah, tl;dr: Obama decided to save the banks, put in no controls, and with this fucked pretty much both Millennials and everyone who came after us over. And everyone else - every other world leader - pretty much just went with it and did the same in their own country. Danke, Merkel, as we Germans would say.

This is also what started the Occupy Wallstreet Movement, which was trying to get SOME accountability, but in the end pretty much failed.

If I asked you to guess how many people got prosecuted because of the shit back then, I can guarantee you, that you would not guess right. Because literally everyone I have asked, said some number between 20 and 100, realizing very well that it was probably not the thousands actually at fault, but not being able to grasp the reality. One. There was one person actually prosecuted because of it.

These people destroyed our futures, they fucked us over, and they got away with it.

And you and I, we deserve to be angry about it.

Especially because it is happening again right now. There is not just one other bubble, but a couple of bubbles right now. And chances are that they will pop very soon. Fuck, I am writing this on Monday early afternoon German time. Chances are that by the time this goes online some might have started popping, because of the Trump administration's inability to deal with shit. And let's face it, the Trump administration is not gonna be capable of dealing with this, when it goes into freefall.

2001: A Space Odyssey is like one of those movies that absolutely everyone knows but few have actually seen. And even less people seem to know or care about the books or that there's a sequel. I for one I didn't even knew 2010 existed until this week! I. Was. Not. Ready.

I'm cursed because now if/when I'm asked about what movies I've been watching recently, or about what science fiction media do I like, and I say 2001, then most normal people are gonna either admit they haven't seen it because it is just so pretentious and long (which... fair), admit that they haven't seen it but think they already know everything there is to know about it anyways because it has been referenced to death, or they will be like "Oh, that one's a classic! HAL is so creepy, what a horrifying villain!" or "That's the movie with the evil red eye robot, right?" or stuff like that.

And I'm just gonna be sitting there all awkward, thinking "They don't know about my "Don't worry. We'll be together" brainrot..."

Ok here’s my two cents that no one asked for on the current (sort of?) debate going on in the Creepypasta fandom on here rn.

For starters, I grew up with Creepypasta. I also grew up mentally ill. I am also autistic. So I know my way around good and bad mental health rep at this point. And to be honest? A lot of the original stories DID suck balls at representation or just horror writing in general.

However, nowadays I see other people on here, often mentally ill or any other social outcast, taking these characters and reshaping them as their own to fit their own feelings and experiences, and I don’t think anyone has the authority to criticize things like that. Cringe culture is supposed to be dead anyways, nevermind the fact it’s inherently ableist at its core.

We also need to take into account kids still exist in the fandom. Pre teens who got tired of shit like scooby doo and wanted something more “mature” or “edgy” to get into without fully going off the deep end into full blown horror movies. At least that’s how it was for me. Not everyone, especially someone who’s younger, is gonna be comfortable with the grit and gore a lot of Creepypasta “purists” are pushing for these days, and that’s okay! When a fandom gets popular it’s always inevitable and unavoidable to have the popular characters get two dimensionalized.

There’s also the whole mascot horror thing that I don’t wanna get into, but I’m 90% sure that also plays a part in the old favorites like Jeff and slenderman being brought up again. They were and still are recognizable characters. Recognizable characters aren’t a bad thing. Making horror more approachable for younger audiences isn’t a bad thing. People having their own interpretations based out of their own experiences isn’t a bad thing.

Some of us grew up and wanted the more edgy and reality based content, and that’s also not a bad thing! But neither side should be dictating or policing how the other enjoys content in this fandom. If you personally don’t like the way something is written, characterized, depicted, or drawn, no one’s forcing you to look at it. No one’s claiming it as canon. No one’s asking for you to accept it as the end all be all.

At the end of the day this fandom was built on OCs and personal depictions of stuff. I can’t name a single character or story in this community that was created by some outside party like a movie or TV studio FIRST (because I know some got so popular they breached the fandom and got their own shows/movies/comics/etc). Everything here was created by someone who wanted an outlet for their creativity, or their pain, or their coping, or whatever else.

Realism and dark headcanons aren’t bad, and neither are any of the headcanons out there who just wanna make a goofy found family of social rejects as a form of escapism.

A 13 year old drawing a fictional layout of a fictional mansion where these fictional characters live isn’t going to suddenly invalidate the horror, I promise, it’s not that deep and it never was.

A 22 year old making a dark comic on the realistic origins of Jeff who is a fictional character in a fictional world isn’t going to suddenly invalidate the more softhearted side of the fandom.

Sure, there can still be a split if people are so adamant about that, but as someone who personally enjoys both the brutal horror side and the “haha Jeff is 15 and gay” sides equally, y’all need to at least learn to be civil to anyone who has a different headcanon than you. And if that seems like too much still, the block button exists for a reason.

TL:DR this fandom is based entirely off OCs and headcanons and people can do whatever the fuck they want because none of it is real and horror comes in many shapes and sizes and intensities and no one should be bashing anyone on their headcanons or views or rewrites or whatever else.

Horror, like any genre, has NO AGE LIMIT. And by that I mean, if someone younger wants to delve into scary stuff, they should be allowed to do so without criticism. I personally grew up on “child friendly” horror media like Scooby-Doo, and the older I got the more horror I wanted to experience.

There’s no right or wrong way to “understand” horror, and I frankly think it’s ignorant and stupid to say if you don’t fully “understand” something, then you shouldn’t be involved in it at all. Horror isn’t always about gore and unspeakable violence and the eldritch entity that wants everyone’s skin inside out. That’s why horror has sub genres for fucks sake. Gut wrenching brutality against innocent people isn’t everyone’s cup of tea and that’s okay!

However, bashing anyone’s tamer headcanons, or calling anything anyone interprets differently than you “stupid”, that’s not okay. God, I feel like an exhausted parent giving this lecture to fellow adults, but this really needs to be said and stressed.

I am an adult. I like when stuff in the fandom takes a dark turn. But for nostalgia’s sake, I also love the fanon so much, because that’s what I was exposed to.

And for fucks sake if it comes down to picking sides, I would rather stick with the part of this fandom that gives zero shits how you see a character as long as you’re having fun.

You can have your serial killer 30 year old Jeff and your canon-accurate-to-that-one-image eyeless Jack, but don’t shit on other people if they don’t want the same thing. Your interpretation isn’t canon, and neither is anyone else’s for that matter.

Realistic, dark, gritty Creepypasta isn’t a new concept, and neither is “adult” Creepypasta. And by the way, Creepypasta was never stated to be for adults. That’s like saying kids and only kids can eat trix cereal. It sounds that stupid on paper.

Let people interpret things the way they wanna interpret. No one is infringing on YOUR character ideas. Creepypasta has no age limit, nor a set way the horror has to be presented. Those who do continue to claim that just sound like pretentious assholes.

Very small side note, I personally think it’s inappropriate and rude to keep using Toby as a “bad example” of mental health rep when the creator has stated multiple times the character is old, not researched, and not even in the fandom anymore. Leave the poor guy alone.
