I realize that if you add *panic* to Colin's dumb comments, they suddenly sound quite different.
And I don't just mean Colin 'i'd never court Penelope Featherington' Bridgerton.
Colin: I began a conversation with someone. Someone who had always been there, but whom I've never really known.
Pen: *expectant eyes*
Colin: *panic* mYSelF!
(he is good at covering up his insecurities with confidence)
Colin: Pen, I have to tell you something
Pen: yes? *Hopefup heart eyes*
Colin: *Panics* I'M LEAVING!!!!! To the ... Mediteranian. Remember? You told me it was a good idea... Because I like to travel
(in the book, he left to escape violet scheming that he may marry pen. And also because he was somewhat denying that Pen had feelings for him. I believe this is show-him trying to not only escape his heart break from Mrs. Thompson, but also his feelings for Pen. Cause how could he look her in the eye when she'd warned him of Marina and he'd been played a fool (according to LW) and still she looks at him with adoration.)
Colin: you didn't write me back. It felt like years, rather than months. i missed you
Pen: fuck you
Colin: *Panics*
Pen: much has changed since you were gone
Colin: *well concealed panics* yes, it's new fashion in paris. Do you like it?
Pen: i want a husband
Colin: *well hidden panic* let me find you a husband!
It's less obvious, I think, because he's in denial and everything, but the prolonged puppy eyes he directs only at her do tell a story and I find that very adorable.
Do you think Colin Bridgerton sometimes lays awake at night, wondering how on earth he manages to be so smart and at the same time so foolish in front of Penelope?

please i love you i'm begging you bring back suspension of disbelief bring back trusting the audience like. i cannot handle any more dialogue that sounds like a legal document. "hello, i am here to talk to you about the incident from a few minutes ago, because i feel you might be unwell, and i am invested in your personal wellbeing." "thank you, i am unwell because the incident was hurtful to me due to my childhood, which was bad." I CANT!!!!
do you know how many people are mad that authors use "growled" as a word for "said"? it's just poetics! they do not literally mean "growled," it's just a common replacement for "said with force but in a low tone." it's normal! do you hear me!! help me i love you please let me out of here!!!

i don't really like when people say dungeon meshi is accidentally good autistic representation, because while i understand not wanting to make conclusions without explicit confirmation from the author, there's always the weird assumption that non-western authors somehow don't know about things like neurodivergency/queerness/etc. (on top of the assumptions that east asian authors are somehow more naive or oblivious to "western" social issues).
given that dungeon meshi started being published in 2014, it's not really a "work belonging to its times"—it's as contemporary as any other media we discuss on this site, which means it should be fair to assume it engages with contemporary topics (and at the very least, you shouldn't say that the representation is accidental with so much confidence)
but anyways, the chapter "perfect communication" in ryoko kui's "terrarium in a drawer" is some of the most straightforward autistic representation I've seen, and from now on I'm going to assume that laios's character writing is absolutely intentional in that regard:

this is just my opinion but i think any good media needs obsession behind it. it needs passion, the kind of passion that's no longer "gentle scented candle" and is now "oh shit the house caught on fire". it needs a creator that's biting the floorboards and gnawing the story off their skin. creators are supposed to be wild animals. they are supposed to want to tell a story with the ferocity of eating a good stone fruit while standing over the sink. the same protective, strange instinct as being 7 and making mud potions in pink teacups: you gotta get weird with it.
good media needs unhinged, googling-at-midnight kind of energy. it needs "what kind of seams are invented on this planet" energy and "im just gonna trust the audience to roll with me about this" energy. it needs one person (at least) screaming into the void with so much drive and energy that it forces the story to be real.
sometimes people are baffled when fanfic has some stunning jaw-dropping tattoo-it-on-you lines. and i'm like - well, i don't go here, but that makes sense to me. of fucking course people who have this amount of passion are going to create something good. they moved from a place of genuine love and enjoyment.
so yeah, duh! saturday cartoons have banger lines. random street art is sometimes the most precious heart-wrenching shit you've ever seen. someone singing on tiktok ends up creating your next favorite song. youtubers are giving us 5 hours of carefully researched content. all of this is the impossible equation to latestage capitalism. like, you can't force something to be good. AI cannot make it good. no amount of focus-group testing or market research. what makes a story worth listening to is that someone cares so much about telling it - through dance, art, music, whatever it takes - that they are just a little unhinged about it.
one time my friend told me he stayed up all night researching how many ways there are to peel an orange. he wrote me a poem that made me cry on public transportation. the love came through it like pith, you know? the words all came apart in my hands. it tasted like breakfast.

I remember discussing Tintin casting choices with a friend from Germany and remarked how it was odd he often has an English accent in adaptations rather than a Belgian one, and my friend just replied "that's because Tintin gives incredibly strong English boy energy (derogatory)"
Here in the UK there's a lot of weird classism tied into accents. Today accent diversity and representation in broadcasting is actively pursued but in Tintin's time there certainly was a preferred accent to have.
