#maybe finds LSZ maybe not

I wonder if there’s any stories that I just haven’t found- set in canon time, mind. Not modern- of WWX raising JL?

Like, JYL was obviously not entirely mentally stable when she ran into the battlefield that resulted in her death. Her precious brothers fought each other- which resulted in one with a broken arm and the other stabbed and casted out of the sect-, had to sneak out in her wedding robes to visit the brother that couldn’t be there because everyone else hated him, she had just married into a new sect, gave birth, had her husband killed on a day that was supposed to be celebrating their child, heard her brother was the one to kill him, learned that there was now a siege against said brother, and that her other brother was part of the group leading it.

Shit be crazy. But what if she brought JL with her. Maybe she unintentionally did it, like heard of the siege and rushed there regardless of what she was carrying- her baby- or maybe she did it on purpose- unable to trust those around her who kept claiming her A-Xian a bad person or thinking that his presence would calm the siege faster. She knew it would at least help calm WWX, who at that point hadn’t been able to even see his nephew let alone hold him.

Then she gets hit by a corpse. She’s now injured with a baby in her arms. WWX-and maybe JWY, depending on which version you base this is- are now trying to stop the corpses and make sure she’s alright, when she suddenly pushes JL into WWX’s arms and shoved them away, causing WWX to barely avoid getting hit by a sword but causing her to be fatally injured.

Her last words- instead of trying to tell him that she never blamed him- were instead to keep her baby safe.

WWX, also mentally unstable due to the previous incidents that he was present for now even worse because he feels like he just killed his Shijie, panics and leaves with JL. She asked him to keep JL safe, and it is not safe in a battlefield. He disappears further into the Burial Mounds- possibly picking LSZ on the way for some extra family feels, possibly not which results in LWJ finding and raising him instead- and is never found again. Alongside the never found, is WWX’s dizi and sword.

Timeskip forward- maybe at Mo Manor, maybe at Dafen mountain- a boy (or two) and his Dajiu (and dad) start helping the sects solve some wacky mysteries and ohp- looks like it’s JL and WWX. Surprise!

Corporate Spy 2nd child AU (P2): He befriends them & is shocked to find out they're WWX's child. After they show him pictures of their life (a happier life, life free of abuse, free of something only now LSZ realize never should've been in his but WAS), LSZ goes back to his lonely apartment & cries. Cries over the loss of love between his parents, over the loss of A parent & the loss of a younger sibling he never even knew existed till now.

Corporate Spy 2nd child AU (P3): LSZ fesses up his family name, making it clear he has nothing to hide. His sibling simply tells him that they knew. "Your baba and his family did a lot of bad things to him. But not once has he ever called your baba a bad man." They also bluntly but gently point out to LSZ that he was a literal child who had 0 power back then. After that, they coax him to go see WWX. Cue more tearful reunions.

Corporate Spy 2nd child AU (P4): LSZ decides to stay permanently & all but disowns the rest of his family. But he gives LWJ a chance & he decides to do the same. It takes a while but slowly everyone heals & moves on with their lives. (If you want to make it more bittersweet, take the WWX remarries route. Meaning now, LWJ has to accept that he's second place in WWX & his 2nd child's hearts.)

I need everyone to know that I have a whole MDZS Pokémon au. That I’ve have drawn pictures for, which I will share with you over a few posts.

(‘Drawn’ is a strong word I think, because I did just trace over the official artwork and just make them ‘Pokémon-y’ lol)

A couple of things about my au- 1) Everyone has a team of three Pokémon, because giving them a full six is exhausting to keep straight. 2) their starter Pokémon are the ones with names, and the names are the sword names. If they have a named second weapon, such as the flute or the guqin, then the corresponding Pokémon is named with that name. This has created a kinda funny happening where WWX and LWG have two out of three Pokémon named, but the third one just gets to be the Pokémon name. Isn’t that a little sad?

First up, because as far as I have right now they are mostly irrelevant because they are post-plot, are the Juniors!

I tried to give a lot of Lans ‘bunny’ Pokémon. So LSZ and LJY share Plusel and Minon, since they are a pair! The two are very good at double battles.

LSZ tells people that his Scorbunny is his started, and he does kinda think that’s true to his memory. I gave him that because ‘bunny’ and I gave Wens a lot of fire type Pokémon, so I felt that it fit. His actual first start is his Phantump, which started following him as a very small child. It’s Pokédex entry states that, according to legend, they are stumps possessed by the spirits of children, so I thought that fit him lol. His backstory isn’t as sad here, and Yiling is simply the graveyard town that many Pokémon regions have. I’m still debating how bad the Wens fate is, so we’ll come back to this.

LJY has an Alolan Vulpix because its something I gave to many Lans. It was supposed to be his starter because many Lan children start with them, but he ended up finding a Magikarp in the cold pond first. He begged to keep it, and so that became his starter. It only knows tackle. (So LJY claims, as the tackle in question looks a lot like the move splash, and only hits the opponent some of the time. If it’s not 100% accurate then it’s only 50% accurate lol)

Why did I give him a Magikarp? Because the thought of LJY with a Gyarados is hilarious.

And then there’s Jin Ling!

I had to think very hard about his Pokémon. I tried to give the Jin’s Pokémon that have the red dot on their forehead, and that includes Persian for a few. So I thought if it would be funny if Jin Ling had the Alolan version, since Meowth looks so sassy but Persian would look so dumb.

His Herdier is Fairy. I was really debating what dog Pokémon to give him here, and honestly, I just really like that line of Pokémon. It’s strong, and useful. I’ve used them on many gen 5 teams. And of course, this Pokémon was given to him by JGY, so he needs a Pokémon from his other uncle! Mareep was given to him as an egg from JC.

Most trainers in this universe get one Pokémon as a starter, and then slowly over their journey get two more that they carefully chose, since the teams are so small and they are more like life companions. Jin Ling over here got all his Pokémon within a month, between the classic Jin starter (Meowth) and the presents from his uncles. Because of this, and other factors, he comes off incredibly spoiled and disconnected from everyone else.

Not pictured here is the Pokémon he ‘inherited’ from his father. It will be shown when we get to that character profile, but it’s so high level, that it won’t listen to Jin Ling no matter what. JZX wanted Jing Ling to be safe, but his Pokémon tends to get knocked out doing stupid shit more often than not lol

Sidenote here, but while I don’t love the outfits I gave the Lan babies, I really do like Jin Ling’s design. I think he looks the most like a Pokémon protagonist!

I do also want to SVSSS au like this, but I don’t have good traceable images like this lol. Maybe one day.

Part 2

There's something that I noticed about most of the deaths in CQL/MDZS:

Jin Zixuan: *stands between WWX & his bitch of a cousin* "A-Li is still waiting-...A-Li is still waiting for you at Golden Carp Tower."

Jiang Yanli:" A-Xian, before, why did you run so fast? I didn't even get the chance to look at you. Or say something to you. I'm here to say...I'm here to say..." *pushes Wei Wuxian away & dies saving him*

Wen Qing: "I'm sorry. And thank you." *gives herself and his dearer than eyesight brother up to save WWX. Says goodbye to his loved- ones and goes to her death with her head held high & gives a reassuring smile at Wen Ning while she hold his hand as they wait for their death.*

Yu ZiYuan: *gives up Zidian to JC and sends her kids away, in CQL kills herself when she sees that her husband has fallen, tries to reach for her husband, dies holding his hand and smiling at him.*

Jiang Fengmian: *sends his kids away, goes back for his wife, in his last moments he reaches his hand out to hold hers and dies holding her hand and smiling at her.*

Xue Yang: *risks his life by going to WWX and LWJ to try to save XXC, loses his temper for the first time in the fight when Lan Zhan takes XXC's soul's pouch, falls into WWX's tap when WWX says that he just wants to resurrect XXC to play more games with him and that the revenge he sought was bc of XXC, not himself, dies looking at XXC's candies as he holds them in his hands*

A-Qing: *dies helping LWJ to wound XY. Finally taking the revenge for XXC that she had sought for years.*

Song Lan: *finally finds XXC and seems nervous but determined to reconcile with him and ask him for forgiveness, fights Xue Yang because of him, falters when XY reminds him of what he said to XXC, loses the fight with XY when he calls XXC's name. In his last seconds hold out his sword to XXC in hopes that he can touch the sword's name.*

Wei WuXian (in the show): *smiles at LWJ and very softly calls his name and asks him yo let him go, smiles at JC and as his last words, very softly calls Jiang Cheng's name, closes his eyes and smiles while shedding tears in acceptance when he sees JC's anger and heartbreak, frees his hand out of LWJ's grip when he sees that LWJ might fall with him.*

Jin GuangYao: Er-ge, stay & die with me. *pushes Lan Xichen away* (closely followed by fuck you NMJ but it's not relevant rn.)

THEY'RE ALL ABOUT LOVE! THE LAST ACTS AND THE LAST WORDS ARE ALL OUT OF LOVE!

I'm especially thinking of how Xue Yang, Jin GuangYao & Wei WuXian all died knowing that if nothing else, they were loved, & maybe it wasn't enough compared to the whole shitshow, but it made it all worth something

They smiled before they died.

It's also true for the last scenes of the characters: Song Lan asks Wangxian to tell Xiao Xingchen that it wasn't his fault if they ever see him, the Wen remnants as fierce corpses save Lan Sizhiu & WWX & those with them and bid LSZ farewell, Lan Xichen leaves the story mourning JGY, Nie Huaisang takes JGY's cap with him before he leaves(in the book)/is affirmed to be the mastermind behind everything because he was seeking revenge for his brother (in CQL), Jin Ling decides that even though JGY, WWX & WN all had a hands on his father's death he can't hate them 'cause they've all given him reasons to be unable to. He then asks JC why he let WWX & LWJ go and asks him what was it that he had left unsaid, Jiang Cheng's last scene is him remembering his sacrifice for WWX and deciding that he can't reveal it to him for the same reason that WWX couldn't reveal his own sacrifice to him, in CQL he tells WWX to "take care.", Lan Sizhui remembers WWX from his childhood and they reminisce the past, he hugs WWX's leg and teases him about his PG-13 teachings to him back at that time, and he & Wen Ning, still happy to have found each other decide that they're going to bury the ashes of their people properly & Wen Ning declares that he's going to make his sister a cenotaph, Wangxian... get busy Wangxianning.

NMJ's death and last scene are mostly driven by hatred & anger & spite, but still, he comes to his right mind when NHS comes close and calls him as he qi deviates, and his fierce corpse kills SMS as NHS shouts for help, so I guess that kinda counts?

“The mist is worse here,” said Lan Sizhui, “Stay with me.”

Jin Ling’s eyes darted around, constantly on the lookout for ghosts as he kept quiet and let Lan Sizhui take the lead. “I haven’t even heard any of the others. Where are we?”

Lan Sizhui studied their barely visible surroundings, catching glimpses of a few shoddy, abandoned stalls. “A market street, I think—and I’m sure we’ll run into them eventually. All any of us can do is go in circles, after all.”

A shadow flew past the corner of Jin Ling’s eye. He jumped and whipped around, his hand trembling on the hilt of his sword. Such a weapon would surely be useless against a ghost but it calmed his nerves to know he at least had something to protect himself.

“Sizhui,” Jin Ling whispered, “There’s something out here…”

No answer.

Jin Ling turned around to find that Lan Sizhui was gone and he was completely alone. A twinge of panic coursed through his veins as he twirled around, unsure if he should move or stay in one place.

“Sizhui?!” he called, frantically searching the mist.

Another shadow glided through the murky atmosphere. He jumped back and gripped one of the arrows in his quiver. With his other hand still on his sword, his mind tried to figure out which weapon would be the best defense.

He narrowed his eyes and frowned, taking a brave step forward as he barked, “Sizhui, cut it out already! This isn’t funny!”

He knew Lan Sizhui was the last person to pull pranks, which made the situation even worse. Jin Ling was growing more worried for his fellow disciple than himself as the unnatural silence of the city chilled him to the bone.

The shadow from before returned, spinning towards him this time in a howling whirlwind. Jin Ling inhaled and finally moved, flying through the mist until he ran into something strong but soft, warm and familiar.

The fresh scent of orange blossom and cedar wood surrounded Jin Ling like a comforting blanket as two confused hands awkwardly encircled his waist.

Lan Sizhui looked down at him and frowned. “Young Master Jin? Are you—“

Jin Ling suddenly pushed against the Lan boy’s chest and sprang backwards, his amber eyes burning with annoyance. “You—! Why did you leave me?!”

Lan Sizhui lifted his brows and blinked, not sure how to respond. “Wha—“

The young Jin disciple spared him no room to even attempt an explanation. “You tell me to stay with you, then leave me behind! Ridiculous!”

He crossed his arms over his chest and looked off to the side, his bangs blowing outward as he sighed. “I called you three times. Something was running around out here and—“ He paused for a moment, cheeks burning as he looked back up at Lan Sizhui with a pout. “I-I was worried, but you look fine,” he mumbled. “Why didn’t you answer me?”

Lan Sizhui’s head was spinning trying to keep up with Jin Ling’s heated outburst. “Young Master Jin, I’m sorry but I honestly didn’t hear you. I thought you were still behind me—“

“Whatever,” Jin Ling interrupted, “Just… don’t wander off, I’m not gonna save you if you do something stupid.”

Lan Sizhui stifled a laugh, no stranger to Jin Ling’s fiery way of showing concern. “The mist really is bad here,” he said. “Maybe this would help?”

Jin Ling’s eyes widened and his imaginary hackles raised when Lan Sizhui offered him his hand, the Lan boy’s long, slender fingers safe and inviting. “Huh?! What are you… I-I’m not a baby! All I said is don’t wander off, it’s not that—“

Once again, the shadow from earlier barreled towards Jin Ling and hit him with a glacial gust of air, this time accompanied by the buoyant, echoing giggle of a child.

Jin Ling yelped and lunged forward, grabbing Lan Sizhui’s hand and hiding behind him, his face buried against the taller boy’s sleeve.

Lan Sizhui watched curiously as the shadow circled around them and disappeared into the mist. He glanced down at the trembling Jin disciple and smiled. “It looks like you’ve made a friend.”

Jin Ling popped his head out from Lan Sizhui’s sleeve and glared into the mist with an irritated expression. “I-I don’t need any friends! Tell it to go away!”

Lan Sizhui gently squeezed his hand and laughed. “It’s okay, it’s harmless. Just a playful spirit.”

Obviously unconvinced, Jin Ling scrunched his nose and went right back to using Lan Sizhui as a shield.

“A-Ling,” Lan Sizhui chimed, his tone gentle and sweet.

Jin Ling looked up to meet his soft, striking amethyst gaze and could swear his heart skipped a beat.

“I promise I won’t leave you.”

Heat spread from Jin Ling’s neck to his ears to his face like a wildfire, every nerve in his body ping-ponging wildly. He narrowed his eyes and sputtered, “Why say it like that…?! You’re so embarrassing!”

Confusion washed over Lan Sizhui’s face as he tilted his head to the side. “Is that not what you were worried about?”

“Shut up,” Jin Ling mumbled. Still holding Lan Sizhui’s hand, he abruptly tugged him along. “Let’s just go already.”

Lan Sizhui lifted his hand to his mouth and chuckled as he was pulled through the mist by the flustered Jin disciple. “Lead the way.”

I had a maybe dumb question: I've seen a lot of fanwork stating wen qing was from a branch side of the Wen family and was wondering if that was novel canon? I know in cql there's the dafan wen but it's even in novel only works sometimes so I was wondering if I missed something x) like in the lan family both ljy and lsz are stated to be part of the main family line so being wrh's niece should be enough to be a part of the main wen line too, shouldn't it?

It's not a dumb question, honestly it's so saturated in fandom that it's hard to really make the connection here especially with people forgetting that if you're a part of the main family, you share the name. But yes, she's still a part of the main family. It's just huge. Here's the passage in question that lays that out, and then I'll lay out the two that people usually use to claim that they're not really a part of the Wen family just to see what we're working with.

"Wen Qing could be considered a famous cultivator of the QishanWen Sect. She wasn’t a daughter of the QishanWen Sect’s leader, Wen RuoHan, but instead the daughter of one of Wen RuoHan’s cousins. Although they were far cousins, Wen RuoHan had always had a close relationship to this cousin of his. On top of that, Wen Qing was exceptional in the liberal arts and studied medicine as well. She was a talent, and thus she was rather favored by Wen RuoHan. She often followed Wen RuoHan to the banquets of the QishanWen Sect, which was why Wei WuXian found her face familiar."

Chapter 60: Poisons Part 5

So the book is pretty explicit at this point that she is definitely related to him, and even if it's not a close relationship by blood, she has grown up around him and knows him well because he and her father were very emotionally close and as a result, she's favored by him too.

Of course we can't choose who we're related to, and it's clear even in the same chapter that she very much does not like or approve of what he's doing and she's fighting back in her own way as safely as she can without compromising either her people or especially her brother, but the point stands that she is related to him and not in a questionable way. That Wen in her name is not just for show, she is a part of the family with enough power to do things like hide some fugitives and act strangely without it being questioned.

Now, as for the justifications of them being a distant branch that isn't related, it usually comes down to these two passages:

"Another guest cultivator stood up, “Of course it’s different. The Wen-dogs did all kinds of evil. To arrive at such an end is only karma for them. We only avenged a tooth for a tooth, letting them taste the fruit that they themselves had sown. What’s wrong with this?”

Wei WuXian, “Take revenge on the ones who bite you. Wen Ning’s branch doesn’t have much blood on their hands. Don’t tell me that you find them guilty by association?”"

Here we have Wei Wuxian saying that Wen Ning's branch doesn't have much blood on their hands. But that's less of a branch that isn't related to Wen Ruohan and more the idea that if you have three brothers, each of whom have three sons, and each of those sons have three sons, you usually mark who is descended from who by a branch. They are still a part of the main Wen family, just descended from a particular line, denoted by Wen Ning being the current male heir to it, hence why Wei Wuxian is able to connect it.

A good argument indeed about their relative innocence in the Sunshot Campaign, but not about how connected they are to the clan. As we saw above, that distance did not stop Wen Ruohan and their father from being close, nor did it stop him from later being close with his niece.

Then here's the other one where I notice the tail response from LXC is often left off...

"Lan XiChen responded a moment later, “I have heard of Wen Qing’s name a few of times. I do not remember her having participated in any of the Sunshot Campaign’s crimes.”

Even though she's a distant cousin, that doesn't stop them from being close to Wen Ruohan and his branch. They're still associated together multiple times.

The long and short of it is I believe there are two reasons why this tends to come up.

The first one is people who struggle with understanding the nature of clans and family and end up taking the people who make the clan of the unique Dafan Wen branch as canon as well, even though in CQL itself, there is never actually a distinction made of where they are from and if they are completely divorced from Wen Ruohan and anything he did. It likely started as shorthand from lacking the novel term Wen Remnants and eventually took on a life of its own.

The other is that people tend to struggle with the idea that not everyone up with Wei Wuxian that he rescued might have been involved in some way in the war and not as entirely innocent as they could have been. They carefully ignore the part where she's mentioned as being close to him, they fall back on the lines of not doing much damage and Wen Ning's branch and come up with the answer that they were not involved in the war at all, that they were all perfectly innocent innocents who never held a sword and erase the nuance of Wei Wuxian protecting them. That shouldn't be as relevant as it is, the point of it all is that they are no longer in war and regardless of what they did, the manner in which they are being treated is unjust. Wei Wuxian takes anyone who's willing to ride away with him.

The fact of the matter is that we know it is likely they did not do much in the war, but they wouldn't have been able to escape it entirely. The fact of the matter is that they are still a part of the main clan and those who escape are named and referred to by the narration as The Remnants Of The Wen Clan, the family. Wen Ning is a part of it, Wen Qing is a part of it, Wen Yuan is a part of it. They are not some mystical branch that's so far unrelated that they have no connection but a similar sounding name, they were a part of the family when it was great and they are still a part of the family when it is fallen.

In this case, branch is because the Wen family is huge. So are at least three of the Five Great Clans. We can't speak with any certainty on the Nie as they're less focused on, and the Jiang we know to be down to Jiang Yanli and Jiang Cheng because they are the only two in the family that they can send to the indoctrination camp, but the Lan have six boys all the same age who wear the family headband, meaning that there must be at least five families all with the name Lan who were able to have a child in the same year, and even in the Jin we know of Jin Zixun being born from Jin Guangshan's sibling, and also later a Jin Chan who is not connected to any named character, but is still a Jin who is picking on Jin Ling. They are all still a part of the main family, just lower down in the line of succession for Clan Leader. That's all that it means.

where jl grew up with jc never really being in a relationship and the handful of ones he had only going on for a couple of weeks (or even days one time) before breaking off.

he wonders if it's because of him, since jc is young but had to take care of a small child. obviously, jc reassures him about this and simply says "I was too busy with school and wasn't even looking for a relationship, don't worry a-ling".

But jl doesn't want him to be alone so he tries to sneakily get jc to find someone or just put is attention on people. "Isn't she pretty?" "Oh, she seems to like you". but he realises quickly that his uncle doesn't seem interested in ladies, so he changes his strategy and tries with guys. The results are as bad. it's only around 15-16 that jl realises something: his uncle is just /not/ interested in anybody and seems really uncomfortable when people are obviously flirting with him.

"Do you think jiujiu is alright?" he ask his friends once after telling them (he has no one else apart from them and jc to talk about it. It was rather obvious jc is not an option).

"Maybe he just doesn't feel that kind of attraction?" suggest oyz, a bit unsure how it would work.

"Maybe he's like Wen Ning" suggest lsz only to have the three other turn to him. They didn't know much about lsz extended cousin, so they were unsure what he was talking about, just asking for more detail.

"He just doesn't experience sexual or romantic attraction at all, I forgot the words for it I would need to ask him for that" he explained. This made a lot of sense in jl mind, assuming jc probably already knew that about himself and just never told him about it (probably unsure how he would react or because he didn't see it necessary?).

So he instead switches to push away anyone who was trying to bother him by flirting heavily. It was to a point even his friend would (more subtly) make people understand jc was not interested.

of course, jc catches onto that 180 his nephew and finds it a bit weird. He was all in to apparently find him a date and now he chases away anyone who approaches him?

So at dinner one time, he asks about it.

"Isn't jiujiu aromantic and asexual? Doesn't it make you uncomfortable when people do that?" jl answers.

and this throws jc into confusion because what is he talking about?! so jl explains to him, looking a bit unsure that he might have wrongly assumed (again) something about his jiujiu. but what could he do when he doesn't tell him much in that department?!

jc looks pensive for a while, making jl a bit nervous, before he sees realisation and relief flashing over his jiujiu face, looking up towards him.

"You're telling me... there are other people who feel like this?"

and this is when jl realises his jiujiu /never/ knew. jc eyes look teary rather quickly, looking to the side a bit. "So there isn't something wrong with me, other people feel like that too".

oh. his jiujiu thought something was /wrong/ with him. jl feel sad about the idea that his jc had believed all these years that something was wrong and had probably forced himself into a relationship "No! There is nothing wrong with you!" he quickly replied, wanting to reassure his jiujiu.

They end up talking some more about it, jl is happy to see his uncle looking so relieved and reassured about something he felt like people might have shamed him for. from there on out, jl is jc biggest ally ever and supports him and is ready to remind him nothing is wrong with him.

(jl is the best ally until he realises he might not be as straight as he thought he was, nor as all as he thought he was)

Like, I can easily imagine jfm and yzy shoving in his head that he /will/ find a wife one day. Hence making him feel shame because he's /failing/ them /again/.

Not to help some of his past relationships might not have had the best reaction to him trying to put it into words.

and he overall stopped mentioning it since the couple of people he confided in only made him feel worst and broken as if something was really wrong with him and that no one else was like that.

ok no but the phenomena of lxc/lsz is fascinating. I'M INTO IT, AS A WARNING, but it's fascinating! because it seems like there's something more out there than, idk, the pair the spares vibe of lxc/jc, "hehe the tsundere should get someone to tease him" vibe of nhs/jc, or "this dynamic is amusing, what if we add romance" of jc/ljy.

like -- obviously, there's the incest, which is always sexy, but also... aah, I Feel it, but how to put it in words? in a way, they're similar in that they have this aura of absolute harmlessnes about them; not because they're weak or cowardly, but because they wouldn't want to harm anyone in the first place. they're Good Boys, those who get assigned "legally can't say fuck" in those stupid memes. hell, most probably it was lxc and not lwj who took care of lsz very early on, so it makes sense they're alike. and they're a sorta-nephew and a sorta-uncle! what if they fucked.

the thrill of making Good Wholesome Boys do something uhhh unwholesome? addictive.

BUT ALSO it's the "others first, I'll wait" tendencies. what if they wanted something and pursued it, for themselves, even if they knew it was ~wrong~? one of the often occuring things in xizhui fics i've noticed was the mutual attraction that started much earlier than the relationship itself, be it lsz having a crush on his unfairly ripped hot uncle (maybe even initially thinking it's normal, because all his friends admit he's hot, cmon, that's an objective Fact) or lxc getting flustered because lsz is growing into a fine young man, huh, who would've thought. there's also the fact that lxc is often just... incapable of being harsh or stern towards lsz; he loves him, wants to protect him and make him happy (yet another trope: lsz making the first step and lxc either allowing him to do whatever he needs, or resisting in the weakest way possible only to give in not even a minute in).

i feel like it's a... maybe not crunchy, but chewy pairing? because obviously there's the the sexy forbidden factor of both incest (although they're not related, etc, etc) and an age gap, but also because the characters are who they are, it doesn't have to be inherently wrong and scarring. these two can be happy together!

BUT THEN. there are two fics that i know of that don't go this route, instead opting for the more realistic, bitter ending: it's wrong for lxc to use lsz like that, it's inappropriate, and it hurts not just lsz himself but also lwj, jgy and wwx. and they end up having to make the painful but necessary decision to remove him from their lives! this dear, loving lxc, who was always so eager to help, so caring, so familial. THIS is crunchy, and i feel i find the flavour similar to that of the fics where lxc is married/dating nmj, but for some reason or another cheats on him with jgy. who also might or might not be younger. there's just something in lxc that makes one want to see him do bad things, while knowing they're bad, and doing them anyway. something something evil jiang clan motto

he's so handsome, so noble and pure-hearted, so tragic in canon, so... sincere and earnest! and he never goes to go feral, have a meltdown, even when he tells wwx off, it's on behalf of his brother he's so protective of. it already is incredibly attractive to imagine him just letting all his pain out, LET ALONE do something bad for his own pleasure. especially post-canon! he's all alone while his brother is happy. nothing matters anymore! why not seduce and fuck a teenager! (it's not always lsz, you know.)

oh!! and of course the delightful fuck or die/dubcon!! there's... definitely more than one fic where lsz has to fuck lxc in order to save him from a qi deviation. there's definitely more than one fic where lxc, for some reason, fucks lsz while thinking he's jgy. there's one fic where they fall into a trap of this like, cauldron-like array and have to do their best not to let the voices in their heads take control and use the other to consume all their energy, and it's SO amazing and hot BECAUSE lxc is resisting all the time while seeing, both because of the array and not because of it, that he wants lsz. there's more than one fic where there's drugging in question (fancy teas!). and finally there's one sex pollen fic that always cracks me up and i know it sounds impossible but TRUST ME it's hilarious and adorable.

But then he was invited to the Nie sect by Nie Huaisang and he actually meets Lan Zhan who is alive and he still thinks that he is dreaming and breaks down in front of Lan Zhan, Lan Xichen and Nie Mingjue and Lan Zhan looks at his brother with betrayed eyes because Lan Xichen hid the fact that Lan Zhan is alive from Wei Ying deliberately. For me, Lan Zhan at some point will start catching up to the moral hangover, but not because he will be surprised by the less savoury parts of his beloved, but because he will start noticing his own willingness to accept them and that can be a scary thing.

(I don't mean that WWX is a bad person - he's actually a really good guy with his heart in the right place, who tries to do a good thing whenever he can. But he also has a checkered past, made some choices that, while understandable, are morally indefensible, and he has serious issues with emotional intimacy and honesty, and a scary penchant for self-sacrifice.)

Until the realtionship started, Lan Wangji's intention towards his Wei Ying was to be The Saviour.

Like, throughought the whole of Sunshot all he tried to do was to Save Him - from the bad war, from the bad cultivation, from the bad sects... Then, he spent over a decade regetting not Saving Him. And then WWX came back and it was saving him from the bad Jiang Cheng. So, for the last 20 or some years, LWJ lived exclusively in the mode of The Saviour. WWX returning had to be like a blessing to him, he finally could play out his greatest fantasy! He got to save his beloved from more than one villain and after all that, he got to kiss him and take him to bed home! Gasp! He got his happy ending! He got to ride of into the sunset and now...

...now what? What now, once LWJ has to start realising that Wei Ying doesn't need a Saviour anymore, and that outside of that role he doesn't really know what to do? Once he has a chance to process, to familiarise himself with Wei Ying the person, he will have to face some moral quandaries he didn't have to face before. He was raised in a certain way and, as much as he carries anger towards his sect and the rules he was raised in, he was still raised with certain kind of morality that, given his character, I don't see him discarding easily or without a solid reason.

Until now the reason was his role of the Saviour that subsumed everything else. But since he doesn't have to be that anymore, what came he his behind now?

Uncritical love?

I don't think Wei Wuxian is someone who can be loved uncritically - for his own good. As much as everyone would want that for themselves in the imaginary world, lack of boundaries in a relationship harms both sides. WWX is a person that will strain against every lead put on him - and if he can't feel one, he will keep desperately pushing further and further until he feels something holding him back.

That's how he lived his first life - notice, he was always fighting for the attention of the people who were providing him with barriers. He wasn't bothering Lan Xichen in Gusu (arguably evenore handsome than Wangji) - he was exclusively pissing off Wangji and Lan Qiren. He wasn't bothering JFM, trying to discover his boundaries - he was annoying the shit out of JC and almost taunting Madame Yu. Almost, as if he needed people who would try to limit him in some way. To feel safe, maybe? To feel noticed?

He was always noticed and it never seemed enough. What can Lan Zhan do that a whole Jiang sect wasn't enough to do for their super star? Love him? As if he wasn't loved before???

So, like, if Lan Zhan is not a Saviour, that means Wei Ying isn't the damsell - as much as he likes to play up being one. He's not the princess in need of a knight. He's not perfect. Not innocent - I think Wei Wuxian would at some point become desperate for Lan Zhan to know that he's not perfect, ecause for how long can you stand to be placed on a pedestal you feel you don't feel you deserve to stand on?

The whole "between us there's no need for thank yous and sorrys" is such a deep quote - as long as you're 15 and never had a meaningful relationship of any kind. Because thank yous and sorrys are a part of normal human communication, and that communication is needed to maintain any sort of relationship - and here we have two characters obscenly bad at communicating and emotional honesty, and once you take even that simple scaffold away...

Yeah, this won't be smooth sailing for either of them.

I'd really love to read a fic where a year past the canon ends, Lan Zhan starts to realise that his dreamed-up perfect relationship with Wei Ying isn't what he imagined it to be.

That what he got is actually a wholeass person with imperfections that will get annoying after a while, with opinions that he doesn't agree with and behaviours he's not prepared to just accept. A human person that will lie to keep him happy, that will leave when any possibility of strife approaches, that sometimes doesn't want to have sex - or that sex isn't a cure-all for their problems. That whatever Jiang Cheng experienced growing up with Wei Wuxian will fall on Wangji too, because love doesn't change you as a person in 100%, sorry.

Because that's what think will be a hurdle for him - he never was in a relationship. He never even had real human friends. Fuck, he doesn't seem to have acquaintances. All he ever had was a made-up image of a boy he knew shortly in his late teens and a sect where he was the lauded Young Master everyone respected. He can't stoically stand a kid talking back to him without a silencing spell and has difficulty expressing the most basic things in useful words. For all the soulmate talk, he didn't even know the boy he dreamed building a life with - that Wei Wuxian never existed outside of Wangji's limited glimpses of him and a lot of forgiving assumption.

Like, when will it hit him that Wei Ying is actually a complex human being that isn't just for him to care about and love, and that he himself isn't happy with some things? Will he one night wake up in cold sweat when he finally understands that the man sleeping next to him orchestrated a horiffic surgery on himself and his brother, and never indicated that he regrets it and wouldn't do it again? That the man sleeping next to him kinda-sorta just looked on as people were murdered in front of him, and didn't really have any strong opinion about being brought back via human sacrifice?

Like, discarding stiff and stifling Lan rules after being burned by them is one thing, but this is a moral quandary that goes way beyond that.

What if, after Lwj says that it was only responsibility for him, he expects wwx to feel the same

But then wwx starts sobbing, yelling at lwj that he loves him and how could he

Eventually wwx passes out and Lwj decides that he will stay married to wwx, because he truly didn't expect wwx to love him (and maybe he pities him, just a little bit. He knows that wwx is all alone without him. And maybe he is comfortable with someone who will gladly do anything for him. And he really, really, likes sex with wwx)

He gets wwx to bed, hides the divorce papers, and when wwx wakes up again, he looks worried and says "you were asleep for so long. And you looked like you were having a nightmare. What happened, love? (...) Divorce? Oh my husband, I love you, I would never do that"

Next time a-yuan visits them, they tell him that he'll have a little sibling

Lan Wangji had been under the impression that he and Wei Wuxian had a mutual understanding regarding their marriage. He thought that he had been clear when they got engaged that this was for the benefit of the child and a way to keep their reputations at least somewhat intact. He wasn't sure if he just hadn't expressed himself well enough all those years ago that led to this misunderstanding or if Wei Wuxian's actually did understand him but his feelings had changed in the twenty one years they have been married.

Regardless of how this has happened, Lan Wangji honestly never intended to hurt Wei Wuxian.

He considered Wei Wuxian to be one of the few people he cares about. The man has been his dearest friend and partner in all things for more then half his life after all. He hadn't thought that the start of their divorce would send Wei Wuxian spiraling into a panic attack so severe that he would actually faint!

Now, tucking Wei Wuxian into their bed, he starts to wonder if maybe he was too rash in demanding this divorce. He's grown quite use to living with Wei Wuxian and removing the man from his life would be... inconvenient. Perhaps even uncomfortable. After all, Wei Wuxian is a dedicated and affectionate spouse who has always supported him. Looking back, Lan Wangji feels a bit foolish for not realizing how deeply Wei Wuxian's feelings were.

He leaves the room to hide the divorce papers in his desk were Wei Wuxian is sure not to look and makes a quick call to the divorce lawyer he had hired to inform her that her services are no longer needed. He will throw away the papers later, but for now he doesn't want to be too far away from his husband in case he wakes up.
