SAVE YOU | MATTHIAS HELVAR
Summary: Imagine Matthias Helvar saving you from drowning.
You not knowing to swim and being part of the Dregs were two things that could get destructive together. You knew that when you joined. So in a way, you deserved the situation you were in now - Ketterdam took out the weak, and now you had pulled the short straw.
The canal water threatened to drag you under, the current having taken you to the sea, and now you were drifting farther and farther away. If you had known how to swim, it would take just a few strokes and you’d be able to push yourself up, but struggling to keep yourself up took all your strength. You couldn’t even scream for help.
You didn’t know for how long you were there - if others knew where you were. You knew Kaz was tapping his foot while looking at the time, you wouldn’t have had time to be late.
You didn’t hear when your name was called, nor you saw the Fjerdan diving into the water, rushing towards you. Your vision was going out already, but then you faintly felt yourself being pulled - maybe Death had come to claim you. Your consciousness went in and out as you were pushed up on the street, and you heard some running steps coming up towards you. You were rolled over to the pavement, turned to your side. Your vision was blurry, and you were tired - oh so very tired. You felt acid on your throat, seawater making its way out of you in a form of vomit. You coughed and gagged as it just kept coming, before it calmed down, leaving you shaking slightly.
“Saints,” you heard a voice say, but it echoed, sounding like it came from behind a wall. The walls at the Slat were something you had always cursed - listening to your neighboring Dreg having a one night’s stand wasn’t something you enjoyed hearing. But right now, you would have done anything to be in your own bed, under covers, dry and warm. Even if it meant listening to your neighbor’s bedpost rhythmically slamming against the wall.
Suddenly, you felt a a pair of hands on your chest and you started to warm up immediately. Your vision started to clear, your tiredness started to diminish. You groaned, seeing Nina kneeling beside you and managed to muster a small smile for her, closing your eyes.
Then, the seawater decided to make itself known once more and you abruptly lunged to the side, throwing up onto the pavement again. Gasping for air, you felt a large hand stroking your back, and finally decided to look at your savior.
Matthias.
You blinked at him, a trace of fluid still dripping off your cheek. You had not expected him to jump after you like that. But at the same time, you knew he wouldn’t just stand there and look as you drowned, you were friends with him after all. Or, you wanted him to be more than a friend actually, but still - you didn’t expect to find yourself in a situation like this, him being so caring with you after he saved you. You saw Nina turn her eyes away, biting her lip as if to hide a smirk - this would be something she’d tease you about for weeks.
More steps approached, and you saw the rest of the Crows walking up to you. Kaz looked like a stormcloud over a job gone wrong, but judging by how Inej looked at him, he wouldn’t chastise you about ruining the job, at least not now. They all knew you couldn’t swim. Jesper and Wylan ran up the moment they saw you, as well as Inej a few seconds later, her hand brushing against Kaz’s arm as she passed him. Kaz stopped and stood a little farther away from the rest of them doting over at you, Matthias helping you to sit up and a moment later, hoisting you up against him. You started walking towards the Slat with Matthias’s arm around you and you couldn’t help but think, maybe there would be more to how Matthias felt about you. Nina had teased you about it and kept hinting that way, but you didn’t believe it being true, thinking it’s just Nina’s hopeless romantic side talking. But the way Matthias looked at you, the way he held you - it spoke about something deeper.
Maybe you’d talk to him about it in a few days. Maybe confessions would be made, maybe one of your greatest dreams would come true.

Having children with Matthias
Hey my lovelies, back with another request. My requests are open and my request guidelines are pinned to the top of the page! Credit to cafekitsune for the banner and the divider!
Requested by Anon
❀Matthis knew he would have a family with you from the moment the two of you met. He couldn't wait to raise a family, to raise them differently from how he was. To give them a better quality of life.
❀Matthias would be a firm but fair parent. He'd want the best for them but he understands what having too strict parents can do.
❀If you were to have sons, he'd want to teach them everything he knows. how to hunt for food, how to create a shelter, and the signs to look for danger. They would be well-versed in numerous weapons. He would want them to be able to look after themselves, you and any potential daughters you may have.
❀If you had a daughter they have him wrapped around their finger. He's willing to give them anything they want. They would be his little princess.
❀However, he would also teach them how to survive. However, he'd also push harder on self-defense. Your daughter would be able to protect themselves, she would know how to use any weapon Matthias could teach her to use.
❀They would not be taught to fear or disrespect Gresha. He grew up to hate and hunt those different from him. Since meeting Nina she's changed his view of the world. They would not be raised the same way he was.
❀Matthias is an active part of their lives. He doesn't care where he's doing, you and the children will always be his priority. Nothing to Matthias is more important.
❀Matthis always planning and being involved in your children's activities. He's an active parent. He's a supportive parent. He's a good father.
❀Matthias would read to their children every night. He'd tell them grand stories about his adventures, about heroes and villains. However, his favorite stories to tell them include both of you. The adventures the two of you have been on together.
❀Matthias wants his children to know they can be anything they wish to be. He's going to support them no matter what. The world is there to make the best of it and it's never too late to change your mind. If he hadn't, he probably wouldn't have met you.

Hi! Cuddles with Matthias? I want him to be a vulnerable little spoon 🥺
Cuddles with Matthias // Headcanon
A/N: Hi! Omg this is adorable, thank you so much for the request! This isn’t very long but I hope you like <3
Usually, it is Matthias wrapped around you. His strong arms holding you so tightly that you cannot help but feel safe and protected in his embrace.
He has two positions which are his favourite.
The first is him being the big spoon. Truthfully, this is more your favourite than his favourite. There’s something about having his body pressed up behind you; his chest pressed to your back as one arm hooks around your waist and the other becomes your pillow.
The second is when you are spread across his chest; your leg hooked across his thigh as you press your nose into the hollow of his collarbone. He likes this one because every now and then he can look down at you, a soft smile on his face as he thinks backs to a time where he thought he would never have this.
There are moments, however, when the roles are reversed and rather than having his body wrapped around you, Matthias needs you to comfort him.
In those moments, the request is written across his face. He doesn’t need to utter the words, or frame the question. It’s something you instinctively know to do.
Your arm wraps around his waist; hand splaying across his stomach. Matthias reaches for your hand; anchoring you to him as you. Bury your face between his shoulder blades, inhaling his all too masculine scent.
In moments like this, little words are spoken. A hum of acknowledgement, a shuddering sigh, or a quiet question of wellbeing. For the most part, this is the time for Matthias to be safely vulnerable - to be protected rather than the one protecting.

I just saw that your requests are open, which is exciting! I love the Staying Undercover story you wrote for Matthias Helvar and was wondering if you would be willing to write more for him? I would love an enemies to friends to lovers story with the reader (fem or gn). The idea I have in mind is reader is a Grisha working for Pekka unwillingly (perhaps being blackmailed into it) and one of the crows thinks it would be best to get the reader on their side but for some reason not kill them entirely, and so reader works as a person on the inside to overthrow Pekka and join the crows and tends up with Matthias. You can obviously change anything you want, this is just the overall fondest I have. I love your writing!! <3

Kaz Brekker has another trick up his sleeve. Normally, that’s a sign that Matthias should be worried. The last few times Brekker called a meeting of the inner six of them, they ended up having to lay low from the stadwatch for months. Months. Brekker argues that as the stadwatch are mostly blind anyway, they weren’t fundamentally impacted, but Matthias knows otherwise.
So yes, seeing the demjin close the door to his office behind them with the typical sadistic gleam in his eyes isn’t exactly what Matthias wants to see. It’s not that Matthias thinks Kaz will get them all killed, just that they’re about to be flung into yet another scenario in which their lives will come perilously close to being ended. It’s the miniscule gap between life and death that Brekker enjoys the most.
Matthias, contrary to popular belief, likes being alive. You wouldn’t think it from the way he keeps finding himself in terrible situations with impossible odds, but it’s true. That means he watches Kaz with a raised brow until the gang leader finally starts explaining himself, gloved fingers steepled over the crow’s head of his cane.
It’s well known that Brekker hates many of the gang leaders in the Barrel, but the one he despises most is Pekka Rollins. There’s a reason for that stemming way back, of that Matthias is certain, but Brekker refuses to elaborate to anyone except perhaps Inej Ghafa.
It shouldn’t come as a surprise, then, that Brekker’s latest plan is targeting Rollins yet again. Kaz recently happened upon some information relating to one of Pekka’s footsoldiers. Apparently Pekka hired a Grisha Inferni about a year or so ago. The circumstances weren’t right, and blackmail is the primary reason why this Grisha is staying under Pekka’s payroll.
Kaz believes that this is a loophole they can exploit. Unhappy workers are the easiest way to get a mole on your side. Brekker’s plan is to meet this Inferni and convince them to feed him information on Pekka Rollins, as much as possible until their cover is blown.
There are many things wrong with this plan, Matthias feels. Nina frowns, voicing one of his concerns. “This seems incredibly dangerous for the Inferni. They’ll be putting their life on the line, and we’ll only get them after they’ve been caught. The only thing we’ll be collecting is a corpse.”
Kaz shakes his head. “We’ll get to them before he does. I’ve devised a method of sending signals between their quarters and the Slat. If we move quickly, we’ll be able to pull them out. I don’t intend on wasting resources, Nina. Having an Inferni in our ranks is useful, even after they’re revealed as a mole.”
Inej tilts her head to the side, considering this. “Have we won over the Inferni already, or is this pure speculation?”
Kaz nods. “I spoke to her two days ago and, after some weighty consideration, she agreed. Her name is Y/N L/N, and she hates Pekka Rollins just as much as we do. That’s why she was alright with this. Pekka has Grisha hunters on his payroll too, and he’s threatening to turn Y/N over to them if she doesn’t go along with it. To make matters worse, Y/N has a young friend who came to the city with her, one who’s also Grisha, and the threat goes for them, too.”
Jesper scowls. “Every time I think the scumbag can’t get worse, Pekka goes and pulls something like this.”
The rest of the crew seem convinced, but Matthias still has some apprehensions. “So, we’re going to the trouble of trying to watch out for two strangers in the lion’s den because…?”
“Because I want an inside man,” Kaz says, and that just about settles it.
Matthias is still getting used to this whole thing, how Brekker decides something on the drop of a hat and they all have to go along with it. Of course, it’s not all that different from taking orders from the higher-ups in the drüskelle order, but that had been something else. Matthias hadn’t realized that there was an option for him to say no. Now he knows he doesn’t have to do a damn thing, but he’s still with Brekker’s crew anyway. Figures.
In all honesty, Matthias knows that he shouldn’t have a problem with any of this. There are innocents who’ve been roped into a bad situation, this is the sort of thing that Matthias usually rises up against. It’s just different because– well, because they’re Grisha.
He thought he was over this, really he did, but Matthias can still hear the words of his old drüskelle commander rattling behind his ears, telling him to not trust a damned one of them. He doesn’t know how to shut that voice out, so he ignores it as best he can.
Soon enough, Brekker’s plan is put into motion. Y/N starts feeding them information and Kaz’s mood notably improves. One of the Crows meets up with Y/N in regularly scheduled intervals, usually Inej, and so far, the Inferni has never led them astray.
Matthias had assumed that he wouldn’t be involved in this until the time came to break Y/N out of Pekka’s hold, but one day Kaz stops by Matthias’ door in the Slat and informs him that Matthias will be meeting with the spy instead.
Matthias frowns. “What? I thought that was Inej’s job.”
Brekker’s expression is cold. “Inej is occupied. You are free. Go.”
There’s not really a whole lot he can do after that, and in the blink of an eye, Matthias finds himself stalking out of the Slat and towards a nondescript pub in the shadows of the city. The location changes each time for the Inferni to meet Inej, but he’s been provided with a booth and a hastily drawn image so as to identify them.
Matthias gets there early so he can scout out the place and make sure he’s not been followed. He sits in the corner of the booth, hands twisting around his drink, until someone slides into the seat next to him. Matthias is ready to tell them that he’s waiting for someone until she pushes her hood back and the dim lantern light of the pub reveals the face of the Inferni.
“You’re Brekker’s Fjerdan?” She asks by way of introduction.
Matthias frowns. “I have a name.”
She arches a brow. “Yeah, and it isn’t relevant. Do you want the information or not?”
Matthias gives her a sour look, which only seems to make the girl’s smile broaden. “If I decline, Brekker will tear out my lungs.”
“Of course he will,” the Inferni says gleefully. She reaches into a bag by her side and pushes a packet across the table at him. Inside are the same notes they’ve been receiving all this time. Matthias can’t help but notice that the papers are lighter than usual, signaling that she’s got less material than her previous trips.
When he points this out, a shadow crosses Y/N’s face. “I know, I know. I think Pekka’s catching on to me. He’s started concealing his important conversations, and locking up documents before I can get to them. Tell Kaz that he’s going to have to get used to less frequent meetings, I’m worried I’m going to get caught otherwise.”
Matthias feels a twinge of worry despite himself. “Do you think you’re alright to return back to his clubs?”
Y/N waves a hand dismissively. “He’s not going to murder me immediately, if that’s what you’re asking. I’m good for another few weeks of information, your source hasn’t dried up yet.”
“I’m not asking about information,” Matthias presses, “I’m asking about you. Are you going to be okay?”
She eyes him curiously. “Why do you care?”
Matthias lifts a shoulder as casually as he can. “You are trying your best. You’re not as much a monster as he is.”
“Neither are you, Matthias Helvar,” she decides.
Matthias smiles. “I thought you didn’t know my name.”
She flashes him a wicked grin in return. “I didn’t want you to feel too important.”
He laughs, although the weight of the situation quickly comes crashing back down around him.
“Why would you be willing to do this?” Matthias asks, “Surely Pekka Rollins doesn’t take kindly to moles.”
Y/N scoffs, the sound as harsh as a Fjerdan winter. “Of course he doesn’t. He’d kill me if he ever found out.”
“So why do it?” Matthias probes cautiously.
Y/N sighs. “I don’t have a whole lot of other options. Even if I never raised a finger against Pekka, he’d still find some flaw in me and have me killed, or sell me to one of the Grisha traffickers if it better suited his interests. Pekka can’t be trusted. Kaz, though, he always honors his deals. I can count on Kaz to keep me alive.”
Brekker or death. Matthias is about to open his mouth and point out what a colossally awful way that would be to live, and then he realizes with a shudder that it’s pretty much how he lives, too. Brekker arranged to get him out of Hellgate, and it’s with Brekker’s crew that he’s running now. Without the protection of the Crows, where would Matthias go? Back to Fjerda? Absurd. He’d be hanged as a traitor in minutes.
So they both have that, then, the demjin protecting them from the noose. Not exactly the finest of thoughts, but still one thread to keep them bound together as allies rather than enemies.
“You really think you’ll be able to leave that easily? You’re still in the same city, and you’ve got his brand on your shoulder,” Matthias points out.
Y/N snarls under her breath. “I’ll burn that ink off all by myself if I have to.”
Matthias feels his eyes widen despite his best efforts to maintain a poker face. “I am certain that there are better ways to go about removing the tattoo. Don’t– don’t do that. Djel.”
The corners of Y/N’s lips quirk up in a half-smile. “Are you taking Djel’s name in vain? Goodness, Helvar, Brekker truly has ruined you. I thought drüskelle were all Grisha-hating, Djel-fearing puritans. Don’t tell me you swear, too, or all my illusions will be shattered.”
For some reason, hearing Y/N think so little of him in connection to the Fjerdan beliefs makes Matthias’ stomach turn. “We’re not all like that,” he says shortly.
“I can tell,” Y/N replies, but he doesn’t think it’s a bad thing, what she says of him. In fact, the glimmer of something in her eyes might almost be newfound respect.
They leave soon after that, out of fear that staying too long in one location might draw suspicion, but Matthias thinks about her the whole walk home, plus later that night, alone in his bed unable to sleep. How could Y/N be so certain of her own impending death yet so committed to the cause of taking Pekka down? How could any of this be worth it?
He must not be as capable of internalizing his emotions as he’d thought, because Kaz regards him suspiciously the next day when Matthias hands over Y/N’s packet of secrets. Matthias manages to excuse it away as concern that their source may be in greater danger than she mentioned, but he has no doubt that Brekker has seen through him anyway.
Still, that doesn’t stop Matthias from asking to take over Inej’s job of meeting up with Y/N the next time, and the next time, and the next. He ignores the knowing smiles, the exchanged glances. It’s easier to forget all that when he’s laughing with Y/N in some shadowy place, pretending they’re not both likely to be killed. She makes it all worth it.
Matthias’ nerves only grow more rattled the longer time passes. Every time he sees Y/N, she looks more and more uneasy. Pekka comes closer to catching on by the day. He can’t imagine what it must be like to operate under that kind of stress, knowing that you’re so close to being found out, but Y/N manages it anyway.
And then, one day, she doesn’t, and Kaz spots the warning signal displayed from Y/N’s quarters. She’s been caught, then. The Crows assemble in minutes, sprinting over to Pekka’s area of operation so as to pull Y/N out before too late. They split up, heading in different directions to canvas the location as quickly as possible.
Matthias heads up to the roof, working his way down through the floors. He hears the sound of shouting and quickly turns towards it, throwing himself into a fight without even knowing who’s in trouble. He takes down the last guard and then there she is, extinguishing an open flame on her hand as she stops the soldier trying to kill her.
Matthias can’t stop himself from letting out a sigh of relief. “Y/N.”
She looks up and Matthias marvels at the look in her eyes, the sort of overwhelming reassurance that must be present in his own expression as well. “Matthias?”
Y/N runs to him, or maybe he runs to her, or maybe both, because suddenly they go from standing on opposite sides of the corridor to being together again. Matthias embraces her easily, as he thinks he’s wanted to for quite some time. Her head tucks against his shoulder, and for some reason he feels that if he just keeps her this close forever, they will both be safe.
“Hey,” he says softly, “hey, it’s okay. You’re with me. You’re alright.”
She’s shaking, but the movements still and die away the longer he stays with her. “It’s alright,” he says again, “it’s alright, it’s alright.”
Matthias has no idea how many times he reassured her of this, or how long he stayed there, but soon enough Y/N squeezes his hand one last time and steps away from him. They still have to get back to the Slat before the plan will have fully succeeded, but the fact that both of them are alive and relatively unharmed right now is good.
The escape is easier than the break-in. Matthias guides her to the roof and then down, their footsteps quick on the uneven cobblestones of the surrounding streets. He pauses briefly to light a candle in a neighboring window, the signal they agreed upon to indicate that Y/N had been found, and then he turns back to Y/N again, the danger relatively behind them.
“Are you alright?” He asks, scanning her in search of injury.
She looks fine, and tells him that much. “They haven't caught up to me yet. I overheard Pekka telling his men to find me and bring me to him, that’s when I sent out the warning signal. I’ve been trying to hide ever since.”
Matthias breathes out slowly. It sounds terrifying, but it doesn’t surprise him that Y/N would be able to pull it off. She’s braver than any of them. “I don’t know how you managed to keep a cool head during all that. Hiding from dozens of guards couldn’t have been easy. At least you knew Kaz would send us to get you.”
“I wasn’t thinking about Kaz,” Y/N tells him slowly, “I was thinking about you. All Kaz needed from me was information, but I knew that you would fight to keep me safe. That’s what kept me focused. I knew you were out there waiting for me.”
His breath catches in his throat. There’s something she isn’t telling him, something he isn’t telling her either. He’d like to, though. No more secrets. Just them.
Kissing her is easy, actually, and it makes Matthias wonder why he’d waited this long to do it. Once again, he is struck by the overwhelming sensation that this is right, this is what he’s wanted for so long, perhaps even before he’d met her. When you’re a child, you always wonder how there could possibly be someone out there made just for you, but at last, Matthias understands. It is her. It has always been her. They are going to be safe, and they are going to be alright, and Matthias is deeply, unendingly happy.

pairing: kaz brekker x fem!reader
summary: kaz is handsome. like, very handsome, and reader never realized its effect on her until nina pointed it out and jesper can't keep it a secret.
warnings: reader has a crush on kaz, kaz is in love with reader, they both don't acknowledge it until nina does for reader. it's all very awkward and it's not a happy ending, sorry, but hope y'all like it!!! Also this is more show-based, so sorry about that lovelies.
note: I saw this in a tiktok and had to write it down, excuse me.
Ketterdam was hot. The randomized rise in temperature was so common that the people of the city opted to not wear heavy clothing all year round, except for maybe the Bastard of the Barrel, for he loved dramatics.
Kaz Brekker was known for his dark heavy trench coat, dark vest, dark dress pants, and dark gloves. If there were any colors in his wore drop, it would only be silver and nothing else.
But that's okay because y/n liked him like this.
It was a busy day in the Crow Club. Customers were running in and out of the gambling shop all night, girls were running around serving tables and pouring drinks, and boys rounded up the dice tables and dragged the games for hours on end.
Jesper stood at the door, his beloved boyfriend keeping him company. He was supposed to keep watch, but he was talking to Wylan so that's a job undone. Inej wasn't anywhere in sight, and y/n knew that only meant that she was gathering information for their next heist. Nina was behind the bar, sugarcoating men into emptying their wallets at the deep cut of her dress and her charming grin.
Kaz had just made his first appearance for the night. His coat long gone, probably hung on the back of his office door. His black and silver vest tightly wrapped around his chest, one gloved hand holding onto his crow-headed cane while the other combs through his wet strands of matching black hair. He had just finished going through the paperwork of that day and decided to take a break to check on the pigeons on his tables, and his favorite Crow by the bar.
y/n sat and stared at him from the bar stool. She had the day off after getting injured during their last heist, but couldn't find anything useful to do at the Slat so she decided to head to the Crow Club and keep Nina company. She and Inej were the only good things that came with this place. And maybe the guy who runs the place. And maybe Jesper and his boyfriend.
He felt her eyes on him from the moment he stepped out of the shadows of the stairs leading to his office. He still couldn't understand how she could locate him so easily in a crowd, it was like the moment he steps into the same room as her, something shifts in the air and tells her that he was near, and she merely scans the place before landing on his dark figure. He'd be surprised at how easy it is to locate him.
She thought she should feel ashamed at how easily she gravitated toward him. How easy it was to find him and keep her eyes locked on him until he decided to disappear again. But as she downed another glass of gin or whiskey, she found that she truly couldn't care less.
A chuckle from across from her made her shift her gaze from Kaz to Nina, and she raised a questioning brow. "What?"
"You could at least try to be subtle."
Confused, y/n's brows furrowed as she crossed her arms together. "What do you mean?"
Nina rolled her blue orbs, then with the towel in hand pointed at their boss. "I mean Kaz. You could try to be subtle about ogling him like that."
Her jaw dropped, lips parted and her hand placed the glass on the table. "I don't ogle, wh- what? What are you talking about?"
"I'm talking about the fact that your heart ran a hundred miles in a second, about the way your eyes lit up the moment you saw him, and how you bit your lip when he does that thing with his ridiculous hair." Nina shook her head, and y/n is left in shambles at this revelation.
Dumbfounded, she glanced back at Kaz Brekker in all of his glory. The white button-up with the sleeves rolled up only slightly, his gloves tightened around his wrists, and his black vest with silver etchings. He looked somewhat devilish in the golden light of the club but in a very good and delicious way.
"You're doing it again~," Nina said again, in a sing-song voice, and y/n's face turns completely red as she jerks away from him, as he's finally caught her staring, and glared harshly at the glass in her hands.
"Y/n!" Jesper's voice clashed into her mind as his hands grabbed onto the back of her shoulders, he plopped himself beside her while Wylan took the seat next to him. Jesper grinned at the girls and one of his legs came to rest on top of the other. "So, what are we talking about?"
Nina shrugged, and before y/n could attempt to send her a begging glance she parted her lips. "y/n's massively stupid crush on Kaz."
And y/n's face burns a deeper red.
"y/n has a crush on Kaz?" Inej jumped out of nowhere on the other side of y/n, making everyone at the table jump. "Saints! I hate it when you do that," Jesper whined as both he and Inej received shot glasses from Nina.
"I do not have a crush on Kaz!" y/n tried to claim, but Nina wriggled her brows at her. "Sure you do, and you have a crush on his hair most of all. She was frothing at the mouth when he ran a hand through it earlier."
"I was not!" y/n gasped as her friends laughed, Jesper cackled as both Inej and Wylan chuckled. Inej rested a hand on her friend's shoulder, "It's alright to like him, you know? He is the boss of the barrel."
"Shut up," y/n whined, trying very hard to bury her face in her cup. "I do not like him because he's the boss of the barrel. I do not like him at all."
"You don't like who?"
His voice reached them like the scratching of two stones against each other. It dawned on her like cold water on a hot day and it sent shivers down her spine. y/n's back shot up straight as she quickly downed the newest glass of booze down her throat in one gulp, and Nina grimaced because it was one of the stronger alcohols she was serving that night.
"Nothing. No one. Nada." y/n quickly muttered, whipping around to come face-to-face with the man of the hour. Somehow, he was a lot more handsome closer up. His defined cheekbones looked like the edges of a playing card, sharp enough to cut. His bitter coffee-brown eyes stared at her with wonder and curiosity, perfectly arched brows raised in question because he knows better than to believe her bullshit. And of course, she was bullshitting. His lips were set in a terminal scowl, but it seemed softer as he stared at her
For some reason, every sharp edge of him softened around her.
"Really?" He asked, still expecting an honest answer, but Jesper was trying so hard to not choke on his liquor, Inej's brows were nearly at her hairline, and Nina quickly excused herself with the excuse to serve more customers.
y/n was fucked.
He turned his head to his sharpshooter, and y/n sent him a quick glare. Jesper coughed a choke as he stared between Kaz and y/n, then sniffed. "Excuse me, I've got to go watch the door. Come on, Wylan." He tried to jump off his stool, but Kaz's cane shot up and forced him to a stop.
Kaz's brow was still up, and he tilted his head as he stared daggers into Jesper, because he knew he would crack, and y/n was going to be fucked.
Jesper stuttered, "I- Well- It's not really my place to say, now, is it?" For a split second, y/n thought he might let him go and question her instead, then she could make up whatever lie she's got and this can all be over, but Kas only smirked. "When was it ever your place to say anything about anything, Jesper? Fuss up."
The Zemini boy sighed, and he sent an apologetic glance to y/n, who was shaking her head at him aggressively. "You." He winced, "She said she didn't like you."
y/n knew that Kaz was good at masking his feelings. He could feel a hundred emotions at the same time and show absolutely nothing for it, but as her eyes locked on him, she could see that Jesper's words faltered him very slightly, then he was back to Dirtyhands.
He lowered his cane, and Jesper mouthed a 'sorry' to y/n, but only pressed her lips at him as he and Wylan left the scene.
"He doesn't mean that in an 'oh he's my boss and I don't like him so I'm going to go work for the Dime Lions' Way, believe me, he doesn't mean that." y/n tried to explain, then turned to face a grimacing Inej when she realized that she just dug herself a bigger hole.
Kaz rest both of his hands on the head of his cane, his posture completely relaxed, but he was screaming within his mind. "What does he mean then?" His voice came out harsher than he intended, but he wanted to know everything related to his y/n, and if she had her eyes set on someone, he'd like to know. To take out the competition of course.
y/n cringed at herself, "He meant it in a... romantic way? Like, 'I don't- have feelings... for you' way..." She tried, hanging on to every word like a lifeline, hoping beyond hope that he would see the underlying message, and for a moment she could swear there was a change in his expression, but then he was normal again and he hummed. "Good." He said, "That wouldn't be very professional of you, would it?"
Kaz wanted to burn down the world. And Jesper. And himself. Why did he insist on knowing? This was worse than knowing. Now he knew she doesn't have feelings for him, but she does? He wasn't a fool, but he was never really good at reading y/n.
She frowned, her shoulder slumped and a look of near relief washed over her. "Right. No, of course not."
y/n felt her heart sink, and she felt Inej's hand supporting her back, her thumb drawing comforting circles against the fabric of her clothes. She was disappointed that he missed her implied message, but also grateful because if he ever found out her feelings for him, this was not how she'd want him to know.
He sent her a single stiff nod, then his eyes shifted to Inej behind her. "What'd you find?"
And just like that, he was off with her. Inej murmurs the city's secrets to him and just eats it up. y/n turned back on her stool, coming face-to-face with Nina again, and held out her glass for another refill. Never aware of the way Kaz's gaze manages to find itself landing back on her all through the night.

Rain tapped against the cobblestones as you made your way back to the gondel. Its rope was tied to the docks, securing its place. A cloak was draped over your shoulders as the hood was pulled over your head, concealing your face from potential threats.
In your grasp, you carried a large paper bag that was filled with canned goods and other essentials the tomb was lacking. Each week, you rotated with the other Crows who would go out and retrieve supplies. You didn't mind going out, but it was dangerous to do so under the circumstances.
As you placed the filled bag gently into the gondel, you stood up straight and reached for the rope that was tied to the dock. Your hand froze as you heard several heavy footsteps coming from behind you.
You swore under your breath and reached inside your cloak to the bow and arrows that were concealed perfectly. You made haste with pulling your weapons out. You drew an arrow into your bow and pulled back with precision as you turned your whole body in the sound of the direction of the footsteps.
The rain continued to fall and the subtle haze that formed across the docks blurred your vision. The sun was already setting and the torches that lit the town were burning out from the rapid fall of rain.
Your lips parted just slightly as you controlled your breath. Your eyes flickered to the left as you heard the footsteps approach closer. Your heartbeat was steady, unafraid and unyielding.
A dark shadow was casted in front of you on the docks. You couldn't make out the face, but you had a gut feeling that whomever the person had been was not approaching for casual conversation.
As a way of warning, you released your grip onto the bow and shot an arrow clean past the person's right ear. To your dismay, they did not slow down nor turn around. You released a soft grunt of frustration and drew back another arrow.
"Whomever you are, leave now," You spoke with pure authority, not once did your voice waver. They continued stepping forward and reached into their jacket to pull out a freshly sharpened knife. Your eyes glanced at the weapon. You swallowed thickly and aimed your arrow, not at them, but at their hand which held a tight grip on the knife. "Leave now," You spoke through gritted teeth. "I promise I won't miss this time.. if you choose not to walk away."
Your threats didn't seem to make much of a difference to the body before you. You lifted your gaze to their dark hooded eyes. The haze from the rain didn't make it easy to tell who they were, but it didn't seem to matter in the moment.
Swiftly, the person before you charged forth with the knife gripped tightly in their hand. You dodged the strike by bending forward and getting behind them. You held your arrow out and shot at their leg. It struck them in the calf as you smirked at the grunt that left their lips. It sounded like a man, but you weren't too sure.
They reached down their left and ripped the arrow from their fresh, bloody wound. Snapping the arrow in half, they stood and rushed towards you again, pinning you to the slick, wet ground. Shocked by the sudden drop, you breathed quickly for a few moments before reaching up with a free hand to punch them square in the nose. They staggered off of you and held their gushing, bloody nose.
You quickly went for the gondel as they were distracted, and hopefully a little delirious. You untied the ropes and hopped into the boat, ready to make your way back to the tomb. You let out a harsh, guttural scream as a wave of sharp pain filled your right shoulder. You looked back to see the person standing there with empty hands. You lowered your gaze to the knife that was lodged into your shoulder, deep and painful.
You winced and made a horrible attempt at rowing with your non-dominant arm. Blood was seeping from your shoulder and soaking your cloak. The metallic smell filled your nostrils. Stains of the thick red liquid soaked into the bottom of the boat and on the paper bag that was filled with supplies for the tomb.
.
Grunting in pain, you pulled the gondel up onto the wet ground and tied it with your left hand to a tree nearby the water. You winced as you leaned into the boat to grab the paper bag and stumbled towards the tomb. Your vision blurred with black dots as you walked through the cemetery, the rain still pouring ferociously.
Eventually, you made it to the tomb (you weren't even sure how you managed it, but you did). You carelessly dropped the bag onto the table and grunted. Your breathing was harsh. Wylan, Jesper and Matthias were seated on the couch as you made your way in. You removed your hood off your head and turned to see a trail of blood you left behind stepping inside. The three of them stood up and walked towards you.
"What the hell happened?" Jesper asked, dragging out each word.
"Are you okay?" Matthias asked.
"Sit down, Y/N," Wylan suggested as he pulled a chair out for you.
They didn't seem to have noticed the knife protruding from your shoulder until the moment you sat down. You winced in pain, tightening your jaw.
"Oh shit," Jesper murmured.
"Can one of you three idiots get Nina?!" You hadn't meant to raise your voice, but you were in such pain you weren't in full control over your actions.
"Right!" Wylan left to find Nina somewhere in the tomb.
Eventually, Kaz appeared with a locked jaw and sharp eyes. If he was concerned, he didn't appear to be. He was good at concealing his emotions.
"What happened?" He questioned as he came around the table to look at you directly.
"Well, I went into town to get supplies," You replied and held your arm tightly, starting to see more and more black dots in your vision.
"I got her!" Wylan pronounced as he came back to the room with both Nina and Inej.
"Oh Saints.." Nina whispered and stared at you in the chair with the knife through your shoulder.
"Hello to you too," You gritted as Nina pulled a chair to sit before you. She got to work quickly, but kept careful with every motion she made.
"I'm still waiting for a legitimate answer," Kaz stated with an irritant tone.
"Okay," You exhaled, "I was on my way back to the gondel when someone was coming from behind me." You explained, "I shot a warning at them, but they didn't stop. At one point, they pinned me down so I think I broke their nose and then I made a run for it to get to the boat and as I was making my miserable getaway, they threw the knife at me."
Nina successfully removed the knife and wasted no time in covering it. You hissed when she cleaned the wound with aged whiskey. You sighed after the wound was clothed in the protectant guaze.
"Thanks, Nina," You whispered.
"You lost a lot of blood, you should rest," She pulled her lips into a tight, thin smile.
"From now on, we get supplies in pairs," Kaz announced to no one in particular. "I don't want anything like this to happen again." And then, he was gone.
.
Inside a small room, you attempted to fill a copper tub with boiled water to wash away the dirt and blood that coated your body. Your cloak had nearly been ruined, but Inej reassured you that she would try and patch it up. As you used your uninjured arm to pour the water into the tub, you hissed feeling the strain against your right shoulder.
"Need help?" Kaz entered the room, leaning against the doorframe with his arms crossed over his chest. His cane was nowhere in sight.
"Uhm, yeah," You whispered. You almost didn't hear yourself speak.
Kaz pushed himself off the wall and helped you pour the water into the copper tub. It took a bit more time to fill the tub than you would've liked. You stared at Kaz's profile as he continued pouring in the water.
"Enjoying the view?" Kaz questioned without breaking into a smile. You didn't respond, instead you merely continued gazing. "I charge twenty kruge for a show, but I can give you a minor discount," He finally met your gaze and swallowed thickly.
"Kaz Brekker making flirtatious jokes? Somebody must write this down," Your lips formed a small grin.
Kaz's lips curved upward into a slight smile. With the others, he was always stoic but around you there were moments when Kaz could relax. His shoulders eased just a bit and his furrowed brows released the tension.
"Are you well?" You asked in the comfortable stillness.
"You just got knifed in the shoulder and you're asking me if I'm well?" Kaz questioned, staring at you intently.
"I believe that was my question, yes," You nodded.
Kaz broke the eye contact and went to pour more water into the tub when it was finished boiling. He didn't entertain your question with a response, instead he continued filling the tub.
"I'm still waiting for a legitimate answer," You stood slightly up on your tiptoes to whisper into his ear the same thing he said to you not too long ago.
"I'm well," He replied with amusement in his gaze as he looked at you.
"Good," You whispered and stepped back away from him for a moment. The tub was nearly full so you started to unbutton your pants. Kaz wasn't looking, but you got the sense that he could see everything from where he stood. He had his jaw clenched, almost as if he were fighting his inner thoughts.
"Can I help?" He didn't look at you when he asked. He could see you struggling due to your injured arm.
Your breath caught in your throat as you blinked and looked up to him. "Sure," You nodded and then added, "Please."
Kaz placed the pot of water back down and walked towards you. You gazed at him as your palms began to produce a thin layer of sweat. He removed his gloves and placed them on the small table beside you. You looked up to his face, but his gaze was locked downward, as his hands moved to the button of your pants. He unclasped it effortlessly and, only then, did he raise his eyes to look into yours.
There was silence for a long while. At least, it felt like a long while.
"Thank you," You whispered.
Kaz didn't respond to your gratitude and inside nodded once with a mere dip of his chin. You weren't sure if it was because of how close the two of you stood, but you could almost hear the rapid thumping of his heart.. or maybe it was your heart.
He stepped back one step and swallowed, "Is that enough water?"
You turned your eyes to the copper tub and nodded mindlessly, completely forgetting about the bath you planned to take.
"Yes," You nodded.
"Okay," Kaz bowed his head once. "Then, I'll be on my way. You'll rest afterwards?"
You nodded softly, not trusting your own voice.
"Good," He turned and headed for the doorway, but you reached out to grasp his wrist. Kaz met your eyes again with a question in them that needed no words.
"Stay," You exhaled. "Stay with me, please." You weren't sure if your voice was shaking or if your body was shaking, but frankly you didn't seem to care in the moment. "I don't want to be alone," You stated once you trusted your voice again.
Kaz looked as though he might've been contemplating and, eventually, he slowly nodded. You sighed contently and began to remove your clothing. It didn't seem to phase either of you, but something in the room was different. You looked up to Kaz when you couldn't quite shimmy out of your top.
He stepped forward and assisted you in removing the top. You swallowed the lump in your throat and looked at Kaz. His gaze was hard, yet soft. He looked as though he could devour you in that very moment, but something had a strong grip on him. His pride, perhaps, you thought.
Kaz helped you out of the rest of you garments and assisted you into the bubbly and soapy tub. The water was warm against your greasy and dirt-covered skin. Kaz pulled a chair out to sit beside the tub, letting his bad leg stretch out. It must've felt relieving to be able to take the weight off it for a while, since he hadn't come in with his cane.
"Thank you," You whispered and leaned your head back against the tub.
He nodded again, gazing at you with both admiration and hunger. You couldn't quite differentiate the two; not that they were all that much different anyway.
You made sure not to get your wrapped arm wet as you reached for a bar of soap to clean your hair with.
"Allow me," Kaz spoke softly as he reached for the soap. You nodded with a small smile and turned so that he could easily wash your hair. His hands were perfectly pale and they felt nice as he massaged your scalp and scrubbed the soap in between the strands.
"Perhaps, if the thug life doesn't suit you forever, you might think of becoming a barber," You smiled as you head was leaned back against the tub.
"I will take it into consideration," Kaz grinned, you could hear it in his voice as your eyes were closed.
Silence stirred in the room. The only sound came from Kaz rinsing your hair after washing it. You sat there for a while, until the water ran cold.
"I'm sorry about what happened," Kaz whispered. "I should've been there."
"What?" You turned to face him, your chest covered by all the bubbles. Kaz looked at you with a nervous and uneasy gaze. "Kaz, there isn't anything you or anyone else could've done."
"I could've helped you," He replied, almost sadly.
"I'm alive, aren't I?" You asked and reached your good arm over to gently grasp his ungloved hand. They were warm and soft. You stared at your hands for a moment and breathed deeply. Kaz must've been feeling the same way because his chest rose and fell rapidly.
"I don't want anything like this to happen again," He repeated his words from earlier, but this time it was in a whisper. Kaz leaned closer to you as you stared at him with a beautiful gaze.
You gently squeezed his hand as his lips found yours. It was a kiss filled with longing and passion, but it was soft. He tasted of smoke and pinewood. You leaned your head back gently a little bit as his other hand cupped your face.
Slowly, you pulled back and felt your cheeks warm with heat. Kaz stared at you lovingly.
"So," You whispered, "are you gonna come join me?" Your eyes were filled with mischief as you gently grazed your fingers across the surface of the water.
Kaz smiled, coyly, in response and shrugged off his coat.

Passing The Baton (Six of Crows One-Shot)
Kaz Brekker x Fem!Reader / requests are open and encouraged
Summary: To your knowledge, your crush on Kaz is unrequited. Apparently this is not the case.
CW: Kaz is dumb but we love him
SAB/SOC Tag List: (send an ask to be added to a tag list!)
___ ___ ___ ___ ___
Kaz ‘Dirtyhands’ Brekker. Bastard of The Barrel. Also- your unrequited love. Kaz had caught your eye just as he had caught everyone else’s. Everyone knew not to mess with the Dregs, and that was thanks to Kaz. Before he’d risen through the ranks of the club, the Dregs had been no one. Quite literally the dregs of society- and while, yes, that was where the name came from, it was quite the rise to fame as the Dregs started getting more and more popular, and more and more dangerous.
Even the Crow Club was starting to become a real pain in the other clubs’ asses.
But Kaz? He’d fascinated you well before any of this. You’d been working at the Crow Club as a serving girl since before Kaz arrived. Not long, mind, but long enough before that you got to experience both sides of the Dregs’ fortune.
Kaz hadn’t seemed to take much notice of you at first- and why would he? Weren’t you just another serving girl being groped by the drunk patrons? Anything to make a few Kruge. But he did take notice when you threatened to cut the balls off a patron when said patron got a little too handsy one day.
He’d taken you back into his office and thwacked his cane on the table hard enough to scratch the varnish and told you rather harshly to never do that again. To come to him next time there was an issue like that and he’d deal with it… discretely.
What that had meant was clear only to Kaz, and that was fine by you. But that was when your little crush had really taken off. What could you say? You liked a bad boy. Someone who could handle his own and Kaz could definitely handle his own. Cane or no.
Despite telling you off, Kaz had clearly taken note that you weren’t afraid to get your hands a little dirty either, something he had an appreciation and mutual respect for. And so you went from lowly serving girl to, well, still a serving girl, but a serving girl who also took jobs for Dirtyhands and worked with him to secure patronage for the club, and Kruge for his and your own pockets. And for Per Haskell’s pockets as well, you supposed. Lazy bastard.
But you longed for more.
You longed for Kaz’s touch, for his lips on your skin. You longed for his affections as much as you longed for his approval. It was a dangerous combination.
As far as you could tell, he did not feel the same way. But then again, would you have ever known otherwise? Kaz kept his cards close to his chest- as he should.
Today seemed different though. You’d barely made it back from a job and Kaz seemed… angry, to put it lightly. You had no idea why, though, considering you got what he wanted, and made it out alive, too. Win-win.
Inej may have had to save you, but that was beside the point.
“You need to be careful,” he said, mouth pursed angrily. “You can’t be making reckless choices and silly mistakes. This is The Barrel. I can’t afford mistakes.”
You met his harsh gaze head-on and shoved the ledger he’d asked for into his chest with vigour. Kaz didn’t even break the gaze between you, just reached with one gloved hand to take the ledger off you.
“I got what you wanted, didn’t I?”
A muscle in Kaz’s jaw twinged.
“That is not the point.”
You let out an exasperated scoff, removing your hand from his chest with another soft shove. Surprisingly, Kaz lets the action move him.
“Then what is the point?” You ask, frustration evident in your features.
“The point is- oh, for Saints’ sake,” he sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. “We could have lost you. I could have lost you.”
Your eyebrows practically disappeared into your hairline.
“You could have lost me…” you trail off, echoing his words, feeling them out for hidden meanings.
“You’re a good investment. I don’t like to lose investments.”
Oh. Okay. An investment. You should have known that that was all you were to him. That’s all you were ever going to be to Kaz no matter how much you wished differently. Ridiculous.
“Of course,” you reply, turning to walk away. “Your investment needs a dri-hey!”
Kaz’s gloved hand snatches at your forearm and yanks you back towards him. You re-balance yourself and glare at him, looking between the tight grip he has on your arm and his heated glare.
“Stop,” he says before forcing his features to soften. “I’m not one for feelings.” He practically shudders through the word. “You’re more than that. An investment, I mean.”
You stay quiet, not giving him anything to work with here, but you’re surprised he can’t hear the uptick in your heartbeat.
“Look,” his grip loosens. “I don’t want to lose you. Purely selfish reasons. Not because you’re an investment, but-” Kaz clears his throat and avoids eye contact. “I care for your wellbeing.”
It’s not an outright declaration of love, but it’s about as close to it as someone like Kaz would give. He’d bared his soul to you here. All the fractured, broken pieces of it. He’d bared his heart for you to treasure or smash into bitty little pieces.
You sucked in a breath.
“Are you saying you have feelings for me?”
Kaz grunts and lets go of your arm. You brush your fingers over where he’d just touched you.
“I suppose so, yes,” he said, eyes flitting to the door like he was thinking about making a run for it.
“Don’t suppose it would interest you to know I felt the same way, would it?”
And there it was. Passing the baton back to Kaz. Passing your heart in return for his. Now it was he who held the power to treasure or smash you into pieces.
Kaz finally met your gaze, and his lips ticked up into a small smirk.
“Oh, I knew that.”

Not when I'm around
Summary; Matthias is smitten with you. However, your oblivious. It's funny how things work out sometimes... Pairing; Matthias Helvar x Female Reader WordCount; 530 Credit goes to @cafekitsune for the banner and the divider A/N - Requests are open! Feel free to drop an ask.
Matthias observed you as you interacted with customers. The way you seemed friendly and familiar to the frequent punters. The way you had them eating out of the palm of your hands. It was no wonder why Kaz had hired you. "Don't you have anything else better to do with your time?" Matthias smirked. He'd been busted, but who could blame him? Not when you were the most beautiful woman in the world. "No, why, have any better ideas?" You wiped a glass clean. Matthias enjoyed the mischievous grin slowly appearing on your face. "There are always ways to spend your time, but right now, I have to work. Gotta earn my keep somehow" With that you returned to attending to customers, with a spark and a spring in your step. Matthias sat back and watched in awe. The Crow Club was packed, as usual, all of the crows were dotted around the room. Kaz rested on the balcony, overseeing things. Matthias hadn't moved from his place at the bar, surveying the room, all the while keeping an eye on you. He knew you could handle yourself, but that didn't mean he wanted you to. Not while he was around. "When are you going to tell her?" Jesper questioned as he slapped him on the shoulder. Matthias turned to glance at him before his eyes instinctively found their way back to you. "I've been trying to. I thought I was being clear but perhaps not." Matthias took a sip of his drink. It was difficult to hear amongst the constant chatter, yet Matthias still found himself being able to spot your voice out. Matthias had never heard a more angelic sound. "Then you are not being clear enough. You need to keep trying because a little birdie tells me she is crazy about you" Matthias didn't want to believe Jesper's words, he didn't want to get his hopes up. Could you reciprocate his feelings? Only in his wildest fantasy perhaps. Suddenly Matthias watched a local drunk grab you. Within a second, he'd jumped from his chair towards you. No one would disrespect you, not as long as Matthias had breath in his body. Taking hold of the man's arms, he dragged the man away from you. Fire coursing through his veins. "You do not touch her." Matthias placed himself between yourself and the man. "What is your girl or somethin' I don't think so." Matthias grabbed the man by his shirt pulling him off his feet. "Don't let me see you in here again!" The main scrambled, tripping and stumbling. "I could have handled him you know" Matthias smirked as he glanced over his shoulder. This was the moment. Two slow steps Matthias took towards you before cupping your face within his hands. "I know, but you don't have to, not while I'm around." You leaned up and pressed a kiss on his stubble-covered cheek. Not missing the pink hue that rapidly dusted it. "Come, keep me company" With your hands entwined, the Crow Club returned to usual. However, high on the balcony Inez passed Jesper some coins. If only you two could have held out just a little longer.

Reader: Man, sure is dark in here.
Matthias: ...
Reader: I'm not scared, or anything.
Matthias: ...
Reader: I mean, who is scared of the dark these days? Not me. No sir.
Matthias: Do you want me to hold your hand?

My favorite quotes from Kaz Brekker in my fic, which I will most likely never publish because I'm too embarrassed. I just wanted to share these beause Kaz's personality is difficult to capture in a fic without making him ooc, so I'm sort of proud that these seem like exact things Kaz would say or do:
"The desperate men are the worst kind of men."
"The Dregs can go screw themselves, he muttered, I'll tell them if and when I feel like it."
"One thing I've learned in this life, he said, sighing. There was a small smile on his face, There are no such things as saints. Everyone's flawed."
"Being tense and being prepared are two different things. But you seem to be both, in all the wrong ways."
(Sarcastically) "After this miraculous sun summoner is discovered, all your problems will surely be solved, and all of Ravka will live in harmony forever."
"If they can't pay me back, I'll take the money from their pockets myself."
"Inej is better off doing more useful tasks then trying to catch a shipment thief. If the thief even exists. His own employees might be stealing from him without him realizing."
"I got paid 240 kruge just for stumbling across those morons, and the night is still young."
"I suppose I have no argument with a midnight waffle run."
"At this point, I could just pretend to be another candidate for the Ravkan throne. A bastard, fathered by the King. I'd have more claim than Nikolai Lantsov."
"See, Nina, sweet? You let them kick mud on your shoes, they'll kick mud in your face next. That's why you shatter their kneecap the first time."
"Lost track of time? What's there to lose track of, Jes? Time only heads one way."
"The steadfast members of the Council of Tides who won't cooperate will be steadfastly replaced."
"The Kerch choose the God of trade and act surprised when he doesn't grant mercy. Benevolence has no place in commerce. Ghezen only hears your prayers when you promise profit."
"You can tell her you got jumped at the docks by a knife-wielding seagull for all I care."
