I think in reference to your last post, BH fans are looking for a leftist power fantasy. I find the people who shat on C2 ending for being a "neo liberal mess because its 8 white people whocant be trusted" to sudden love BH and think these same 8 people are delivering this message. A messsage that has not been supported by the cast, the themes or the DM.

Some of the takes Ive seen since these final episodes have aired.

The world will have to listen to the people they didn’t want speaking.

But the world has been listening to them. Did they not stand in front of all Exandria and speak, gave their word layed their honour on killing predathos. Has Keyleth and other powerful npcs not listened to them? Who is stopping them from speaking?

Hey! So yes, all of these are true and are effectively what I've had in mind. I don't think it's worth coming up with new and creative ways to express my thoughts on the intelligence of these people again, only to reiterate that the issue is not that Campaign 3 subverts Campaigns 1 and 2 but rather expects the paradigms of those campaigns to be subverted without doing any of the work to actually do so - we have seen a single case of Vasselheim colonization that was oddly bloodless itself (the ley line nexus swap probably killed more residents of Hearthdell than the missionaries did until the town rebelled and attacked them - hold that thought) and has been treated as a widespread phenomenon with no outside evidence. People have started to point to Abbadina as being unfairly maligned despite Laudna calling the people there ignorant and entire situation a "pissant town in a pissant squabble" (3x61, around 3:40:00) and Abbadina saying herself she believes morality is innate (3x61, around 3:57:00), and, perhaps most damningly, the fact that Abbadina is, as a former Hishari member, undeniably complicit in the trajectory of Ashton's life for which they keep blaming the gods, because they refuse to blame their parents. Fitting, frankly, given that the fans doing this are the ones who have the unmitigated gall to demand strangers forgive Liliana in honor of their own parents in southern Christian cults without any self-awareness of the optics here. The widespread oppression they claim Bells Hells to be stopping has failed to be adequately outlined by the text, and I (and I think many others) believe myself to be more knowledgeable and intelligent than these people, so at this point it's like, either provide a well-crafted counterargument or shut up because I am unmoved by any personal attack.

We are dealing with fans who are devoid of empathy for anyone unlike them. I find it difficult to look at their ongoing derision, as white Americans raised Christian, towards so many fans who speak of colonialism as a tool to destroy their culture, religion included, and come to any other conclusion. They are so obsessed with defending their statement that the campaign they started watching before the moon plot was even revealed has suddenly conveniently taken on the current performative cause celebre buzzwords in their do-nothing social circles that they will gleefully mock the colonized to do so. No wonder they relate to this party of people whose main response to gaining power is to be a petty dick to people who haven't done anything unwarranted. No wonder they keep claiming the people they point a gun at are unspeakably corrupt for acting angry and frightened in response - for accusing people of the sin of wanting not to die when they want them to die.

I don't think they care about people or causes; they care about being seen as someone who cares about causes. They push the idea of automatically being leftist because of one's circumstances because then they do not need to make an effort, being (for the most part) queer and neurodivergent. However, this is the queer neurodivergent site so while those are obviously oppressed groups in the real world if you want to play oppression olympics in this space you're playing with about the same hand everyone else was dealt, and while no group is monolithic in their beliefs, there are queer neurodivergent nonwhite or non-christian or both people in the fandom who find Bells Hells to be entitled, small-minded bullies and those people are, again, targeted and mocked. It's not about belonging to an oppressed group unless you can be used to center the white ex-Christian who's furious that you exist as a reminder that they are not the greatest victim of Christianity and see you as an inconvenience to ridicule in the hopes you'll disappear.

I've been chipping away at some postcolonial texts myself, as someone who is admittedly not an expert in the topic, but I was struck by this quote from bell hooks (taken from the discussion of the subaltern on Wikipedia, but I've ordered the book it's from):

"[There is] no need to hear your [native] voice, when I can talk about you better than you can speak about yourself. No need to hear your voice. Only tell me about your pain. I want to know your story. And then I will tell it back to you in a new way. Tell it back to you in such a way that it has become mine, my own. Re-writing you, I write myself anew. I am still author, authority. I am still [the] colonizer, the speaking subject, and you are now at the center of my talk."

I don't think the cast are deliberately making an anticolonial or leftist work - I think it's just kind of a mess that has stumbled into a semi-interesting worldstate with a generally selfish group of PCs that people are reading their small and petty desires into- but if they were (and certainly if they themselves claim to be doing so), I'd have to say that quote applies. I certainly think it's applying to the fans. An Autism Speaks approach to colonialism, one might say. The reason those fans following Critical Role are here looking for that story and not an actual play with people from colonized countries is because Critical Role has a larger fandom and gives them more attention and permits them to be author and authority. Hypocrites and posers to the end. And yeah, they have no plans for a better world in Exandria or real life. That takes thought, and work, and that's for the people they spend their time jeering at.

01. matt x reader : writing’s on the wall

the girl that i loved never treated me nice, writing’s on the wall, i pretend i can’t read.

matt has trust issues from his last relationship, and despite knowing he shouldn’t, he doubts y/n. after a specific incident, matt unpacks the way his ex, ella, treated him.

matt sat back on the couch, tightly holding a gall of water, half full, as he traced the rim with a shaking hand. his gaze shifted to y/n, the subtle sound of her typing on her phone piercing through the harsh silence of the late hour. he traced over her, examined the way she was practically swallowed by one of his hoodies. he inhaled, taking in the smell of his fading cologne and her vanilla scented perfume, mingling in the air in a sickly sweet way.

his mind flickers back to 2 years ago. he recalls ella. the way she had never done right by him. she hid her infidelity for their whole relationship, she covered her secrets with fake love for matt. his stomach churned. a soft laugh escapes y/n’s mouth, and he feels his heart drop. what was so funny?

he rubs his eyes. “what’re you laughing at?” he mumbles. she barely looks at him, a small smile still playing on her lips. “it’s nothing,” she says, dismissing him with a flick of her hand.

he didn’t let it go. “no, what is it?”

she shut her phone off quickly, placing it face down on the glass coffee table. “seriously, matt. it’s nothing.”

his eyes drift to her phone, his stomach tightening. he could feel the familiar cloud of doubt filling his mind. she was hiding something. a wave of anxiety hits him, and before he can think it through, his hand is reaching for her phone, snatching it off of the table. her breath hitches. “what’re are you doing?” she asks, her voice laced with panic.

he didn’t answer. instead, he starts scrolling through her recent messages. “what are you hiding, y/n?” he asks, his voice now tinged with slight desperation. she didn’t answer at first. instead, she reaches with trembling hands. “matt, please,” she whispers. “give it back.”

his grip on the device tightens, his knuckles turning white. his breath is picking up, the familiar feeling of anxiety panic attack picking up. “something you don’t want me to know, huh?”

“matt,” she sighs, slightly tugging at his wrist, her voice cracking and strained, clearly searching for his understanding. “please, it’s not what you think.”

suddenly, the phone drops to the floor with a soft thud as tears begin to sting his eyes. the growing anxiety finally causes him to break. “fuck, y/n,” he whispers, his voice trembling.

she stays quiet for a brief moment, her eyes looking over him. she slowly makes her way to him, wrapping her arms tight around his torso. “i was texting nick and chris. it’s for your birthday. a surprise,” she mutters into his chest, her lips brushing the soft fabric of his t-shirt.

matt pulls away, confusion still laced in his expression. “why didn’t you just tell me that,” he whispers.

“because, matt. i didn’t want to spoil the surprise,” she starts. she looks at him, reading his face. she notices the way his jaw is tight, and his eyes show doubt. she scoffs. “you don’t believe me. why don’t you ever believe me?”

his chest tightens, the weight of his past seemingly heavier than ever before. “i don’t know how to, i guess. after ella,” he trails off. y/n’s eyes soften, but a slight tinge of anger laces her words. “you think i’d cheat on you?” she asks.

matt shuts his eyes, his throat dry. “no,” he mumbles, the pain still evident in his voice. “i just don’t know how to let go of that.”

as the words register, she sighs, gently bringing a hand to cup his cheek. “you don’t have to,” she murmurs, her thumb gently caressing his cheek, the rough feeling of his stubble making a soft noise. “i’m not her. i love you. i wouldn’t do anything to hurt you.”

he looks down, his thoughts tangled. “i know, it’s just… ella always hid things. she lied to me. i never saw it coming. it made me feel like i wasn’t worth the truth. if it weren’t for my dad, i wouldn’t have ever left, either.”

she gently catches a tear with her thumb and smiles up at him. “i love you, matt. and you deserve the world. i will always tell you truth. always.” he inhales shakily, slowly nodding. he reaches up, placing his hand over hers while it still rested on his cheek. “i’m sorry,” he says.

y/n looks at him with a soft expression, quickly going on her toes to press a kiss to his lips. “talk to me. let me help you. please?”

he nods a little, feeling the crushing weight on his chest lessen ever so slightly. for the first time, he allows himself to fully believe her words.

Okay... I am currently back on my Voltron bullshit and continuing my rewrite of Voltron. And I'm constantly reminding of HOW MUCH I HATE LANCE.

Don't get me wrong. I am still treating Lance fairly in my fic, making sure he gets screen-time and a proper character acr and stuff.

But by GODS. This man pisses me off so much and that's only made worse by his stans. I was scrolling through Keith's tag here on tumblr. I also have Kl@nce filtered out. I cannot see a single post without at least three pages of scrolling and then it's only ONE POST. AND IT'S STILL KLANCE BECAUSE IT HASN'T BEEN TAGGED CORRECTLY.

Anyway. Onto the actual things I hate about Lance and not just his fandom.

Lance is a fucking asshole. I mean that on the deepest level. Let's go through it chronologically because I cannot rank it from least to most assholery, because some things are on the same level.

1 - Allura wakes up from the cryopod and Lances catches her. She's confused and dazed and the first thing you should do is ask if she's alright. Oh, but Lance is above that. Instead, he flirts with her. Karma given immediately as she calls his ears hideous and puts him in a submission hold, which is why I kept that scene in my fic, but that was still wrong. I know it was played for comedic effect, but that doesn't make it not canon. It's canonically accurate that if you've awoken from a coma, Lance's first instinct is to flirt with you if you're pretty.

2 - Literally throws Hunk into the middle of a battle. I get that Hunk was supposed to leave the Lion anyway, but just shoving him out when there are lasers everywhere and Hunk has no protection? Yeah. So much for 'best friend'. Add on the fact that Lance never really treats Hunk like a friend. At all.

3 - Okay. Season 1 Lance isn't bad outside of those two examples, even if he has his dumb moments, so let's jump to Season 2. Starting shit with Keith for no reason. People can go 'oh, Keith obviously did something to him at the Garrison' but he DIDN'T. The writers themselves confirmed that Keith did nothing to Lance, he just started shit with Keith all the fucking time. Like accussing Keith of wanting Blue and cutting him off when he tried to explain what was actually happening, even though Lance is the one who was outraged initially that Keith had Red. Or how about Lance getting up in Shiro's face and screaming his head off about how Keith would rather kill people than listen to them, as if he knew Keith at all after bullying him the entire time.

4 - Okay. This one pissed me off the most and is the biggest reason I'm making this post. The fact that Lance used Shiro's death/disappearance against Keith. Keith outwardly expresses his lack of desire to become the leader and accidentally let it slip that Shiro wanted him to do it. To which Lance is all 'convenient that you say that when Shiro's gone'. What. What the fuck. Stans really say that Lance is precious but how the hell are you justifying that? A blind man could see how much Keith loves Shiro, and Lance has the fucking gall the say that Keith is USING his death/disappearance for a position he doesn't want? He didn't even apologise for it. He just told Keith to suck it up later on. This is one of the reasons I hated Lance as the Red Paladin, the others being explained in an earlier post of mine.

5 - Oh, yeah. We're not done. Because after Keith, it's Allura. Allur@nce is probably the worst ship that could have happened, apart from Kl@nce. If you wanted a straight ship, how about what was canon for the past Voltron series? Kallura? Anyway. Yeah, Lance treats Allura like a prize instead of a person. He's posessive in a way that he has no right to be because they were not together. He glares at Matt for flirting with Allura, something he only does once. He gets mad at Lotor and tries to stop them from spending time together, EVEN THOUGH LOTOR IS HELPING ALLURA AND BONDING THROUGH ALTEAN THINGS. HELPING HER KEEP IN TOUCH WITH ALTEAN CULTURE. In Season 8, he literally yells that it should be Lance and Allura?? What a fucking weirdo?? You can't claim that you're destined to be with someone without being together. That's not how healthy relationships work. That's how a stalker's mind works. Lance is constantly flirting with Allura throughout all of Voltron and she never once reciprocated until Season 8 where it's so obvious that Lance is just a rebound but the writers wanna make it so that it's 'true love' and they want Lance to be happier than anyone so they just gift her to him like some sort of trophy. Lance didn't care about loving Allura, he cared about winning her. At least Lotor actually cared for and respected her. I still don't like canon Lotor, but that's mostly because the writers didn't want to deal with gray morality. Cowards.

1 - Honestly the worst example of a leader. It's shown from episode one. Now, there is the argument of learning to become one, but Lance just never learns? He's never facing the consequences of his actions and, if he is lectured, he ignores it. Keith actually takes lessons to heart and tries to improve and he does. If Lance became the Black Paladin, the universe would have been doomed because he can't get over himself for a single moment to even bother listening to anyone else's advice.

So. Yeah. Those are the main reasons why Lance is an asshole. Now to make the Lance stans really pissed.

Reasons why Lance would have been a terrible leader and could never have been the Black Paladin.

Remember episode one? Remember how the hydraulic stabiliser was out in the simulator and Lance still tried to push on, even though Pidge and Hunk advised him not to? Totally great leadership qualities there. There's nothing better than a leader that refuses to listen to you. 'Oh, but Keith is stubborn and didn't listen--' yes he did. He's stubborn and unrelenting at first, but he eventually realises that they're right.

Remember episode three? Remember when Lance bragged about kicking, which made Voltron fall, then proceeded to try it again and failed again even when Keith advised him not to? Yeah. Lance does not make good decisions and does not listen to any advise. Even from the leader's right hand man.

Remember Season 1 Episode 12? Remember how they were waiting for Shiro and Allura to get back and then Keith saw someone taking quintessence so he decided to follow them? Remember how Lance said no and was ignored but did nothing more to stop Keith? He has no authority and no charisma to keep anyone at bay. Pidge herself mocks Lance for being the pinnacle for leadership. Sarcastically. Because he's far from it.

Pidge doesn't respect Lance as a leader, Keith never would considering Lance treats him like shit, Allura can't take Lance seriously with him hitting on her every ten seconds, and Hunk is always questioning Lance's decisions. If nobody respects you, you cannot be a good leader.

2 - Easily distracted. Yes, it's a very popular headcanon that Lance has ADHD, and I agree with that, but that doesn't make it okay. And he's distracted in the easiest ways. Just shove a pretty girl and he'll instantly get distracted and lead the entire team to doom. Remember Nyma and how easy it was for her to steal the Blue Lion? How he didn't even warn anyone that he was taking her out for a ride because he didn't want anyone contesting his conquest? Yeah.

Don't get me wrong. It's fine to have ADHD or get distracted easily. Monkey D. Luffy from One Piece is a great example of a leader who gets easily distracted, but the second he sets his mind on something, he blocks everything out. Lance just doesn't have the capability to do that, nor do I think he'd be able to learn how to.

3 - Gets jealous really easily. As in. Really fucking easily. He's jealous of Keith from the get-go, starting a one-sided rivalry that he's constantly on the losing side of because Keith doesn't care. He gets jealous of Matt when he flirts a bit with Allura. He gets extremely jealous of Lotor for having actual chemistry with Allura. He's constantly jealous and a good leader is only ever in competition with himself. A good leader will only strive to become better for the sake of the team, not to say that they're better than someone else, much less if they're someone that you are in charge of. It's a horrible trait to have.

Jealousy in and of itself is not a bad thing. It's when that jealousy overrides your logic and controls you, instead of you controlling your jealousy: which Lance struggles with a lot. And getting jealous over anyone who even looks at your crush is a very bad thing to do because you do not own your crush. It's okay to be jealous, but not posessively like Lance is. Not to the extent of trying to scare off any potential suitors.

4 - Nowhere near as skilled as Keith or Shiro. Sure, the writers may claim that he is better, but the proof is in the pudding. Keith and Shiro are fucking unmatched. I've defended Lance's skills in a previous post, but I also said in that post that, while he is skilled, he is nowhere near Shiro or Keith's level. I mean, Shiro was the golden child of the Garrison and set so many records. He was known as the best pilot. Keith beat those records and his flying capabilities are always, always noted. I haven't heard a single character comment on Lance's skills, other than to point out how bad they are. Keith was the only one who could have flew through the astroid field, he was the only one who could fly into the Marmora base which was in a blue star surrounded by two black holes, he was able to fly a Galra jet just by pushing the right buttons and knowing what the do, and he's the one who unlocks the warping abilities of the Black Lion. Shiro was able to connect with the Black Lion far before anyone else, able to see through Black and connect with Black to the point of his soul being saved by her.

Lance hasn't done anything spectacular. And, no. He was not 'done dirty'. He was given almost everything he wanted except the Black Lion. The writers claim he's the best pilot, but have not shown it at all. In my eyes, Keith and Shiro will always be the best.

5 - Selfish. Again. Nothing against being selfish. It's perfectly fine to be selfish, so long as it doesn't actively harm others. But for a leader? You should be as selfless as you can be. The team comes before you. And that's exactly what Lance isn't.

Lance is selfish and that's okay, but it's not leadership material. The whole reason Black rejected him is because he wanted the position out of selfish reasons. When he enters Black, he says 'Come on, Lance. You can do this'. In other words, he wants to pilot her because he wants to prove himself. He wants the acknowledgement. He wants the title of the Black Paladin and leader. Black accepted Keith, both at the start of Season 2 and Season 3, because he piloted her for purely selfless reasons. For Shiro.

Lance wants things for himself. Keith wanted things for Shiro. It was only after Shiro came back, (or so they thought), that Keith started focusing more on himself. Even then, he put everyone else before him. He distanced himself from the team so that Shiro could pilot Black again, and he was constantly risking his life for the Blades.

Lance just... isn't the type. He has put others before himself, but he expect things out of it. He expects a parade and acknowledgement. Nobody knew what Shiro went through to rid Zarkon of his connection to the Black Lion. Nobody knew what Shiro went through in his imprisonment because he doesn't want to burden anyone with that. Nobody knew what Keith went through to save Black and Shiro from Zarkon. Nobody knew what Keith went through when they were all mad at him for missing an attack. Lance doesn't withold that sort of stuff. The only thing he doesn't talk about is his insecurities, which he ends up spilling to the mice and Laika (the Yupper) anyway.

6 - Last one. Promise.

Nothing fucking happened. While Keith was gone, nothing of importance happened surrounding Voltron specifically. There was the Lion mind meld and Lotor joining, but all that served to prove was, with the mind meld, if Keith was there, he would have heard Shiro. And with Lotor joining, all it proved was how immature Lance was.

The second Keith gets back, things start happening again. Lotor gets outed as cruel and manipulative (still an ass-pull, by the way), Shiro gets outed as a clone, and so on. If Lance was leading, they all probably would have died ages ago. I'm talking Season 3 Episode 2, ages ago. Because Lance just isn't cut out for it.

So. Yeah. Those are the main reasons I hate Lance and why Black Paladin Lance is an awful idea. Screw the people who believe in it. It is awful.

Like I said, this won't affect my treatment of Lance in my rewrite, because I can fix those issues that come up. I don't have an issue with Season 1 Lance, it's later on that gets problematic. I just hate people building Lance up by bashing all the other characters, then claiming that Lance is the most traumatised, sad character when SHIRO AND KEITH ARE RIGHT THERE. NOT TO MENTION ALLURA, WHO LOST HER ENTIRE SPECIES, AND CORAN WHO LOST EVERYONE INCLUDING ALLURA AND NEVER GOT TO SAY GOODBYE TO HER.

Fuck. I hate Voltron so much but I can't help but love it.

Jinshi “W-Wait a minute.”

高順「いかがされましたか？」

Gaoshun “Ikaga sare-mashitaka?”

Gaoshun “What’s the matter with you?”

壬氏「まだ報告(ほうこく)が終(お)わっていないぞ」

Jinshi “Mada hokokuga owatte-inaizo.”

Jinshi “The report isn’t finished yet.”

高順「ん？手習(てなら)い所(じょ)の工事(こうじ)でしたら、滞(とどこお)りなく」

Gaoshun “N? Tenaraijono koji deshitara, todokoori-naku.”

Gaoshun “Hmm? If it’s construction work for the penmanship school, it’s been going smoothly.”

壬氏「違(ちが)う！」

Jinshi “Chigau!”

Jinshi “It’s not that!”

高順「ん？毒茸(どくきのこ)は全(すべ)て採取(さいしゅ)し…」

Gaoshun “N? Doku-kinokowa subete saishu-shi…”

Gaoshun “Hmm? We’ve picked all the poisonous mushrooms…”

壬氏「それも違う！あの…熊胆(ゆうたん)とかいう代物(しろもの)はどうだった？」

Jinshi “Soremo chigau! Ano…yutan-toka-iu shiro-mono-wa do-datta?”

Jinshi “It’s not that, either! What about that thing…called bear gall?”

高順「なるほど。ここで、高順の豆知識(まめちしき)。熊胆は、胃(い)のもたれや胃痛(いつう)、胸(むね)やけにも効果(こうか)があり、驚(おどろ)くべきはその即効性(そっこうせい)にある。胃のむかつき程度(ていど)であれば寸刻(すんこく)の内(うち)…」

Gaoshun “Naruhodo. Kokode, Gaoshun’no mame-chishiki. Yutanwa, ino motareya itsu, mune-yake-nimo kokaga ari, odoroku-bekiwa sono sokko-sei-ni aru. Ino mukatsuki-teidode areba sun-koku-no uchi…”

Gaoshun “I see. Here’s Gaoshun’s bits of knowledge. Bear gall is effective for stomach upset, stomach pain, and heartburn as well. What’s surprising is how quickly it works. If it’s just an upset stomach, it’ll be gone in an instant…”

壬氏「ちっが―――う！」

Jinshi “Chiggaaaaaaau!”

Jinshi “It’s nooooot that!”

I really like how Mr. Otsuka (VA) spoke this line!

高順「私が覚(おぼ)(おぼ)えてしまうほど、熊胆がいかに優(すぐ)(すぐ)れた生薬(しょうやく))(であるかを何度(なんど)(なんど)も教(おし))((おし)えていただきました」

Gaoshun “Watashiga oboete-shimau-hodo, yutanga ikani sugureta shoyakude aruka’o nandomo oshiete itadaki-mashita.”

Gaoshun “She told me so many times how excellent bear gall was that I’ve memorized it.”

いかに(Ikani) = formal word which means どんなに(Donnani): how

壬氏「それはつまり…」

Jinshi “Sorewa tsumari…”

Jinshi “That means…”

高順「大変(たいへん)、喜(よろこ)ばれていらっしゃいました」

Gaoshun “Taihen, yoroko-barete irasshai-mashita.”

Gaoshun “She was very happy.”

喜ばれていらっしゃいました: I think this sentence is not exactly correct, called “double honorific.”

喜んでいた is the simple form, and either “喜んで” or “いた” should be changed to be honorific, not both. So, “喜んでいらっしゃいました” or “お喜びでした” or “喜ばれていました” is better.

壬氏「そうか。ご苦労だった。（♪鼻歌(はなうた)）」

Jinshi “Soka. Gokuro datta. (♪Hana-uta)”

Jinshi “I see. Thank you for your hard work. (♪Humming)”

高順「まったく…。手(て)のかかるお方(かた)だ。次回(じかい)、『月精(げっせい)』。国(くに)の安寧(あんねい)を揺(ゆ)るがす美女(びじょ)…ご覧(らん)いただきましょう」

Gaoshun “Mattaku… Teno kakaru okatada. Jikai, ‘Gessei.’ Kunino an’nei’o yurugasu bijo… goran itadaki-masho.”

Gaoshun “Seriously… he’s such a high-maintenance person. Next episode, ‘Moon Fairy.’ Please take a look at…the beautiful woman who threatens the peace of the nation.”

手のかかる（てのかかる/Teno kakaru）: troublesome, high-maintenance, need a lot of care

Synonyms : 手がかかる、手間(てま)がかかる、世話(せわ)の焼(や)ける、世話が焼ける

The words are usually used to express babies’ or kids’ status, and in this case it’s a complaint with a warm atmosphere of love for Jinshi.
