Scrolling through #idomeneus and #meriones tags on Tumblr be like “why are my boys so underrated why aren’t people talking abt these two I like them so much your honor”
It’s not like they didn’t have enough screen time I mean look at book 13 they were literally slaying in that book it’s like Idomeneus’s aristeia
And it’s not like they didn’t have a high place among the Greeks I mean look at book 1 Idomeneus was literally the second Achaean leader called to the ritual right after Nestor. And they literally brought the third largest fleet (eighty ships) to Troy
As for friendships? Look at him and Meriones. Just look at them. They were besties your honor. They knew each other so well. And you want him and Agamemnon? Just look at book 4, see how Agamemnon talked abt him and how he responded. And do I even need to bring up the fact how in the Odyssey Idomeneus was like the very Achaean leader Odysseus yapped abt the most in his disguise at Ithaca, and how Odysseus kept calling him a good pal?
C’mon Tumblr we need to talk abt them more cuz they certainly deserve all the yappings. And do I have to be something like the #1 Idomeneus yapper on Tumblr cuz I will

the most accurate modern au of the telemachy to me would be telemachus going off to college in the middle of a family crisis (also his dad is lost in traffic and guys from his high school keep threatening to fuck his mom while playing fortnite or something)

There’s something so sad yet perfect about me last year patiently waiting for Mark and Ethan’s unus annus memorial videos yet completely forgetting about this year’s until I saw it in my recommendations. Like damn I guess that kinda was the point

i've seen the term "prix de rome" pop up in descriptions of several artworks i've reblogged here. apparently it was a prestige competition where artists competed in making the best depiction of a specific motif for that year (mostly taken from mythology or ancient history). what i DESPERATELY need is a table overview of each year's subject and participiants (not just winners!!), which the internet is NOT giving me
anyway here are the epic cycle-related motifs i've managed to find traces of so far:
(some years show two subjects, i'm guessing this is either a mistake in my sources, or the painting, sculpture and composing-competitions were working off different motifs)
1717: aphrodite asking hephaestus for armour for aeneas
1769: achilles placing the body of hector before the body of patroclus
1771: the battle between athena and ares
1801: achilles receiving agamemnon's envoys
1803: aeneas' flight from troy
1809: priam at achilles' feet
1810: the wrath of achilles
1812: odysseus and telemachus slaying the suitors
1815: briseis mourning patroclus
1816: oenone refusing to heal paris, OR odysseus and neoptolemus finding philoctetes
1817: helen saved by castor and polydeuces
1820: achilles rewarding nestor the prize for wisdom at the funeral games
1822: orestes and pylades
1823: aegisthus discovering the body of clytemnestra
1825: antigone burying polynices
1831: achilles pursued by xanthus
1843: oedipus exiled from thebes
1845: odysseus and nausicaa
1849: odysseus recognized by eurycleia
1850: the death of achilles
1852: philoctetes on lemnos
1854: hector and astyanax
1859: aeneas in latium
1860: orestes resting at the altar of athena
1861: the death of priam / the fall of troy, OR chryseis reunited with her father
1866: thetis delivering the divine armour to achilles
1868: the death of astyanax
1871: oedipus and the corpses of his wife and sons
1875: clytemnestra (just. clytemnestra?)
1876: priam at the feet of achilles AGAIN
1880: odysseus and telemachus reunited
1881: the wrath of achilles AGAIN
1883: oedipus cursing polynices
1888: odysseus and nausicaa AGAIN
1912: oedipus finding his dead sons
1934: odysseus and calypso

So in the Odyssey we found out Nestor has a daughter called Polycaste who he allows to bathe Telemachus and in some versions of post-Odyssey life the two of them are married, which implies that she is either of age with or younger than Telemachus. Telemachus is as old as how long Odysseus has been gone; 20 years. So Polycaste was either just a baby like Telemachus when their fathers set off to Troy, or (and personally I find this possibility more interesting) Nestor's wife was pregnant with her when he left.
And like, imagine you're Nestor and you're finally returning home after ten years of war and are probably dreading having to tell your wife that one of your sons died at Troy. And you come home and find out you now have a 9-10-year-old daughter who probably doesn't even know who the fuck you are or any emotional connection to the brother she lost. Not to mention that those two brothers who went to war were probably old enough to be fathers themselves so she may very well be an aunt to children fairly close in age to herself. Like can you imagine how awkward and uncomfortable that would have to have been for all parties involved?
And then Telemachus just comes along years later looking for info on his dad and Nestor just decides to play matchmaker.
There isn't really a point to all this. I just felt like rambling about Classics again.

been listening to the audiobook of The Odyssey (Emily Wilson's translation, which is actually incredibly readable to an extent that surprised me. but also im a little freak man so maybe take that with a grain of salt) and it's so fascinating how alien this whole society feels. i mean, obviously The Odyssey isnt like. a documentary lol. but just as an indicator of what would have been seen as reasonable, normal behavior, it's fascinating. men cry a LOT in this
