Brazil's Rainbow Maniac

The Rainbow Maniac is behind the murders of 13 men in Carapicuíba, a city of nearly 400,000 people in greater São Paulo. They were killed in a park used as a gay meeting point. One of the victims was a transvestite, shot in one of the city's many love motels. 'In his head, he thinks he is doing a clean-up job,' said Paulo Fernando Fortunato, the police chief heading the inquiries. 'He doesn't like homosexuals, he hates them.' The killing began on 4 July 2007 when 32-year-old José Cicero Henrique was murdered in the Paturis park. Since then another 12 men have been killed in the park, nine in virtually identical circumstances. Their half-naked bodies were dumped in the undergrowth with a .38 bullet in the back of the head and their trousers wrapped around their knees. Fortunato said one of the men was beaten to death while another victim was shot 12 times. Police sources told newspapers the hail of bullets had turned his body into a 'sieve'. One local newspaper suggested the killer may have arranged meetings with his victims over the internet, using the social networking service Orkut. The case remains unsolved.

On the 6th of Janaury, 1979, Tan Keun Chai and his wife, Lee Mei Ying, left their apartment in Singapore to go to work for the morning. They had left their five children home alone: 10-year-old Tan Kok Peng, 8-year-old Tan Kok Hin, 6-year-old Tan Kok Soon, and 5-year-old Tan Chin Nee.

That afternoon, Tan and Lee attempted to phone their children at home to check in on them. Each phone call went unanswered and concern quickly transformed into dread. Tan and Lee called up a neighbour in the same apartment block and asked them to check in on the children. The neighbour knocked on the front door but nobody came to open the front door. 

The neighbour called Tan and Lee and informed them that the children's weren't opening up. An overwhelming sense of fear overcame the couple and they left work to return home. When they unlocked the front door, it took them just seconds to take in the carnage inside the apartment. 

Blood was spattered across the walls and floors. They entered the bathroom and found the four lifeless bodies of their children. They had been slashed and stabbed to death and were piled up on top of one another. The pathologist stated that each child had no less than 20 stab wounds, and that one child's arm was almost severed.

Investigators speculated that the murders had been premeditated, and that the killer had been careful to not leave any evidence. There was also evidence that the killer had cleaned themselves up before leaving the apartment that afternoon. However, Tan had put up a fight and a long hair was discovered in his hand, presumably from the killer.

Investigators also theorised that the motivation was revenge. They noted that the killer knew details about the family's movements, and knew that Lee had undergone sterilization. In the wake of the murders, the couple received a New Yard card which depicted children playing together. Inside, the card ominously read: "Now you can have no more offspring, ha ha ha."

The murders still remain unsolved.

After receiving encouragement from several people I've come around to the fact that I'd really like to try my hand at writing a book about [x] but I keep getting hung up on what kind of book - what do I want to tell the world about this person, about this man whose deeds everyone knows but so few know the why and how of how he became the way that he was? Do I lay it all out chronologically and let the reader draw their own conclusions? Do I offer my own insights? Do I remain completely impartial and clinical?

24 People Perished In A Train Derailment Caused By Unknown Saboteurs

The City of San Francisco luxury train was running 30 minutes behind schedule the night of August 12, 1939. To make up for lost time, engineer Ed Hecox pushed the state-of-the-art streamliner to 90 miles per hour while traveling through the Nevada desert. Hecox knew the area well - he had been transporting travelers from Chicago to Oakland and back since he was a stagecoach driver in the 1880s.

The train was at top speed as it approached bridge #4 over the Humboldt River Gorge. Just before the train crossed the overpass, Hecox noticed a tumbleweed on the tracks. The conductor immediately slammed on the brakes, but it was too late. As the momentum from the engines propelled the derailed front cars forward over the bridge, five other cars decoupled and plunged into the riverbed below.

Twenty-four people perished from the impact, and severely injured passengers had to crawl over dismembered body parts in the dark night to seek help. One of the passengers was a doctor, who helped triage and stabilize as many victims as possible. Hecox ran for help, but the next town was miles away. When he finally reached Harney, he alerted authorities and gathered volunteers. The injured lit portions of the train on fire to provide visibility as they awaited Hecox's return. All 170 passengers suffered injuries, and the first rescue train didn't arrive until the following day.

Upon investigation, authorities found that someone had tampered with a 30-foot section of tracks near the bridge. Its spikes had been pulled out, and the track was bent inward. Additionally, the tumbleweed had been tied to the damaged railing to camouflage the saboteurs' work.

Investigators never caught the perpetrators, and the motive behind the sabotage remains a mystery. Officials estimated the job would've taken more than 90 pounds of tools and several hours to complete - an impossible feat for one person. But instead of focusing on suspects with ties to the railroad or its passengers, investigators focused on transient men in the area made homeless from the Great Depression. After numerous interviews, they found that none of the local homeless men could've been responsible for the incident. Volunteers and looters looking for souvenirs the night of the crash had destroyed any clues that may have led to catching any plausible suspects. When the US entered WWII a few years later, officials abandoned the investigation.
