The air pollution record was shattered on June 7th.
The US experienced its worst toxic air pollution from wildfire smoke in its recent recorded history on Wednesday, researchers have found, with people in New York exposed to levels of pollution more than five times above the national air quality standard. The rapid analysis of the extreme event, shared with the Guardian, found that smoke billowing south from forest fires in Canada caused Americans to suffer the worst day of average exposure to such pollution since a dataset on smoky conditions started in 2006. “It’s the worst by far, I mean, Jesus, it was bad,” said Marshall Burke, an environmental scientist at Stanford University who led the work. “It’s hard to believe to be honest, we had to quadruple check it to see if it was right. We have not seen events like this, or even close to this, on the east coast before. This is a historic event.”
While not as damaging as a major hurricane, this episode of air pollution has been disruptive over an entire region for several days. The overall impact on people's health will become more apparent when statistics on public health are crunched.

In New York, where the sky went from a milky white to a Blade Runner orange over the course of a day when schools and playgrounds shut down outdoor activities and people started donning masks outside not worn since the early days of the pandemic, the particulate matter hit around 195 micrograms, more than five times above the national air quality standard. “The levels yesterday were quite dangerous, particularly if you are in a vulnerable group,” said Burke, adding that this includes vast swaths of people such as the elderly, children, pregnant women and those with prior medical conditions. “I expect we will see an uptick in respiratory hospitalizations, pre-term births and, sadly, mortalities.” Many New Yorkers stayed indoors rather than brave the campfire smell lingering on streets shrouded in smoke but even this did not fully shield most people, Burke said, with indoor air monitors in Manhattan showing that people experienced more than 100 micrograms of particulate matter.
Locally, the pollution readings in NYC in the past 24 hours have dropped from Very Unhealthy down to Moderate. But don't throw away those face masks. We're still much closer to the beginning of the 2023 fire season than to its end.
With climate change, such wildfires and resultant pollution are becoming more common.
Francesca Dominici, an expert in air pollution and climate at Harvard University, said that people should also refrain from exercising outdoors to avoid the “crazy levels” of air pollution, but that she still expected a surge of hospitalizations from cardiovascular and respiratory problems triggered by the smoke. [ ... ] “I hope as part of this crisis there is an opportunity to realize we need to act on climate change. We’ve gone from three years of not going out because of Covid and now we can’t go outside because of polluted air. The world and nature is telling us something, it’s sending us a very strong message.”
Ultimately, this is the stat we need to worry about the most.

Chris Geidner at Law Dork:
Just before the close of business Tuesday, items appeared on two court dockets with which Law Dork readers are all too familiar that showed how far removed reality is from the ideal of “equal justice under law” engraved above the U.S. Supreme Court’s doors.
The items show — in shocking if predictable contrast — that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit is continuing to aggressively and explicitly encourage and protect forum-shopping for the right while federal courts in Alabama are continuing to aggressively investigate judicial concerns about alleged forum-shopping in LGBTQ civil rights litigation. First on Tuesday, two Trump appointees issued a ruling ordering, yet again, that a conservative ideological challenge to a Biden administration rule must remain within their ultraconservative circuit. Moments later, LGBTQ civil rights lawyers filed a notice that they had complied with the invasive order from another Trump appointee that he be allowed to review a document that they maintain is protected by attorney-client privilege as part of a two-year judge-shopping investigation. This issue is not new — I wrote about this issue more generally on June 10 — but Tuesday’s news developments are particularly stark examples of the differences in result that are the consequences of these differences in treatment.
Heads, the Chamber wins
For conservative forces — here, the Chamber of Commerce fighting the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s credit card late fee rule — Judges Don Willett of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit has twice issued writs of mandamus to stop U.S. District Judge Mark Pittman, a fellow Trump appointee, from transferring the challenge to the federal court in D.C. Pittman, after the first go-round, harshly criticized the “landmines” laid by the Fifth Circuit. In Tuesday’s order, Willett’s libertarianism was supported by Judge Kyle Duncan’s Christian nationalism to … protect business interests. [...]
Tails, LGBTQ civil rights lawyers lose
A little more than a 10-hour drive across the South away — across Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi and up Alabama — lawyers submitted a document to U.S. District Judge Liles Burke that they insist is protected by attorney-client privilege but that he has now twice ordered the LGBTQ civil rights lawyers to turn over more than two years into a judge-shopping investigation. Burke himself prompted the investigation by questioning in a court order whether parties’ dismissal of two cases challenging the state’s new ban on gender-affirming care for minors and lawyers’ discussion that another challenge would be brought constituted judge-shopping.
Chris Geidner writes in Law Dork how right-wing interests get deferential treatment in various courts, especially the 5th Circuit Court.

Interviewer: In 2006, you had the opportunity to work with another Burke, your son Tom, in “Number 13,” the M. R. James Christmas ghost story. Was that the first time you ever worked with Tom on screen?
David Burke: The first time we worked together professionally. When Tom was still at school, we used to do performances in the village hall.
Anna Calder-Marshall: We’d make them up, in secret, just comedy, clowning, poems…we’d do Victoria Wood sketches.
David: Tom was brilliant at that.
Anna: Brilliant…we’d work them up over Christmas … We worked so much together as a threesome. I mean we did show after show … we must have done about 8 or something.
Interviewer: Do you think Tom would ever give the role of Dr. Watson a try?
David: I think he has too much charisma.
Interviewer: I was gonna say, I think he could probably play Holmes …
David: He actually does a speech…
Anna: … Holmes, as Jeremy Brett. He’s an incredible mimic. He learned it for one of our shows.

Parnell is a 1937 biographical film starring Clark Gable as Charles Stewart Parnell, the famous Irish politician. It was Gable's least successful film and is generally considered his worst, and it is listed in The Fifty Worst Films of All Time.

*Wanders in two hours after Wednesday ends holding starbucks*
Episode #2 of The Little OC/Canon Ship That Could, officially titled Blackamore Stump assuming it ever gets finished. This snippet is a direct continuation of this, if anyone wants to go back and read more niche Burkefucker material.
Got tagged by lovelies @adelaidedrubman and @shallow-gravy, and am tagging @henbased @florbelles @cultfollowlng @snake-in-the-garden @derelictheretic
Staci’s the first to take notice.
“Federale.” He barks, dropping a sharp gaggle of square keys and MSU keychains into Joey’s fist. “Get down here. Try some real beer.” His syllables roll over each other, sloughing and sliding into what sounds like three long German words; he sounds worse than he feels, Nora would suspect, as his head sways to follow Hudson, trotting over to the driver’s seat with a levity she rarely lets loose.
“Real beer?” Burke asks. He’s got the whitest voice of any ambiguously tan man she’s ever met, tense enough to be tweaker-ish while maintaining the distinct, upper middle class brand of snide. “I could smell the liquor from my office, man.”
“100% Hope County Grain.” Staci supplies helpfully, just as the doors unlock. “You should’ve had some, it’ll put hair on your chest.” His “office” refers to a cramped sideroom, once occupied by Hudson’s late partner, the Danny who Nora replaced. She’s never been brazen enough to move in, so it had been gathering dust until the Marshall arrived to fill it with a bunch of heavy folders he never opens and the smell of Arm & Hammer deodorant.
As far as she could tell, that room was always half shrine, half open wound - maybe that’s why no one can seem to decide if the Marshall’s worth his salt. He cocks his head, glancing between the three of them. “I already have that.” Nora huffs a laugh. “Oh shit, really?”
Staci’s trying to work his right leg into the passenger seat, and not having much luck. She doubts he’ll stay at the bar very long, but she’s got a pleasant buzz on that she doesn’t mean to ruin; or at least, not alone.
“It’s nice people there.” She says, opening the back door. “Family owned, I think.”
“I know them.” Burke says. It sounds dismissive, but he pushes himself up off the door nonetheless. “I’ll drive behind you.”

Saw @einsteinsugly’s post about the kids from her verse and I kinda wanna do mine.
Layla Quinn Kelso - She's very kind and sweet but gets vicious on Halloween. (her and Betsy have a yearly prank off)
Trevor Nicholas Canton - Confident and self assured. He's also very smart and gets straight A's in school. He's basically what Finn Hudson tried to be but failed miserably. He's also on the football team.
Alisha Amira Callesti - Kind, intelligent, and minds her business. Despite being Jo's best friend, she doesn't agree to her meanness and ways of torture and does the right thing by them.
Jared Michael Kwan - He's a very reserved and introverted person despite being besties with the very extroverted Jo Mitchell. He loves being on the computer and playing video games with his friends. Similar to Alisha, he doesn't agree with Jo's methods of torture. He's also a very loyal person to the people he cares about.
Joanna "Jo" Star Mitchell - She's a lot similar to Jackie, being like a 'queen bee with a heart of gold'. She cares a lot of about what people think of her and tries to maintain a certain image of having this shiny, lavish, and rich life. But she has a lot of pain, anger, and resentment deep down that she doesn't show.
Ryland Clifford Barnes - He's basically early seasons Kelso and Nate, except with little to no redeeming qualities. He acts like some sort of god but is really just an arrogant douchebag. He's a terrible boyfriend and has no qualms about having sex with other women, despite being with Kelly. He also has no problem bragging to his teammates about his sexcapades and hitting on other women. He barely listens to, let alone respects Kelly as an individual. Alisha even broke up with him during freshman year because he kept trying to touch her boob without consent. He also doesn’t believe girls can play sports and has tried sabotaging the girls’ sport teams several times.
Mikayla Annapoorni Burke - She’s a very intelligent person and super supportive of her friends. Not to mention, super chill and easy going. Similar to Aneesa from nhie.
Sharon Michelle Adams - Sharon is very thought driven person and tends to prioritize logic over emotion. But she is very loyal and cares a lot about the people she loves.
Sarah Paige Mitchell - Sarah is a very sweet girl who cares deeply about other people’s emotions. She’s wise beyond her years and can be pretty stubborn at times. Sarah is also a good listener and supportive friend.
Etienne Marshall - I haven’t thought much for Etienne but I feel like similar to Ozzie, he can be brutally honest and into acquired tastes but at the same time, wears his heart on his sleeve more often.
Ridge Pinciotti - He’s very laid back and enjoys partying and having fun. Unlike Kristie, Delilah, and Mitch, he doesn’t really care for monogamy nor being in a serious relationship. He can see the appeal and is supportive of his friends but he’s not super into that. Some of the girls he hooks up with try to change his mind but it never works. He’s a bachelor and buddy at heart.
Raquelle "Kelly" Michelle Shaland - She’s a very bubbly and happy girl who enjoys chemistry and doing experiments. Kelly may come off as shallow at times, but isn’t even remotely close to shallow. She’s also a very forgiving person (too forgiving sometimes) and tends to have a hard time figuring out who she is on her own.
Mitchum Eduardo Pinciotti - He can be pretty mischievous and do some childish antics but truly has a good heart. He claims to not do relationships and tries to be bachelor-like just like Ridge but fails (I.e. Lilah)
Delilah Reed - She’s a lot similar to Kristie, with being rebellious and outgoing, yet still having a soft heart. But her, it’s kinda at a different extent. For my followers that watch degrassi, Kris would be like Spinner Mason and Delilah would be like Jay Hogart.
Serena Marotti - She’s very outgoing and comfortable with her sexuality. She’s also a part of the soccer team and wants to an athlete in the future and get into Stanford. She doesn’t exactly have the best track record with guys but it doesn’t stop her from being able to open her heart and leave her guard down.
Gwendolyn "Gwen" Patricia Runck - Same as canon
Nathaniel "Nate" Glenn Runck - Same as canon but he matures a lot when he starts hanging with Sarah.
Osmund "Ozzie" Chen - Same as canon
Nikki Alison Garcia - Same as canon
Kristina "Kristie" Anne Marie Forman - She is a very mischievous and reckless person similar to her mom but deep down, has a lot of anger and pain she tries to let go of. She gets straight A’s in school
Elizabeth "Betsy" Victoria Kelso - She’s super blunt and outgoing. Betsy doesn’t take any shit and will be anyone’s worst nightmare if they hurt her and/or the people she loves. She’s part of the dance team and has been dreaming of being one since she saw Angelina Ballerina (let’s pretend there was a version that came out in the eighties). Similar to Serena and her other friends hitting on Jay, Jay’s friends often hit on her as well. Betsy also has a thing for rebels lol.
Leia Anne Forman - Same as canon
Jason "Jay" Michael Kelso - Also same as canon
