This is a based on how Sherman was first accused of being crazy. In 1861, Sherman was commanding the Department of the Cumberland in Kentucky and he felt that his forces were insufficient to defend against the Confederate forces which he overestimated to be far more powerful than they really were. When Simon Cameron, secretary of war at the time, came to meet with him about his concerns, Sherman said he would need at least 60,000 troops to defend the area and 200,000 to advance. Cameron thought this request for troops preposterous and told reporters that Sherman was “absolutely crazy” and that is how the rumors started.

By the way I have almost decided the three of them are probably Chase Sumner and Benjamin Wade (for the drama among these people themselves xxx)

I feel like I should explain some of my idea on this. My initial idea came from the fact that in 1862 Chase complained all day long to the radicals in Congress about (what he thought was) Seward's dictatorial behavior in the cabinet, so a committee of radicals approached Lincoln about removing Seward from office. Then Seward resigned. The end result was that Lincoln used his politick and exposed Chase’s conspiracy(?) so Chase resigned along with Seward, and Lincoln rejected both. This was the first time that Chase resigned (was it? I’m sorry I lost my count this poor guy resigned too much💀💀💀

& Wade and Sumner were both in that committee as far as I remember, interestingly enough Chase and Sumner were friends (I really want Sumner to take Madison's lines ahhh) but Chase and Wade were actually mortal enemies (Wade split the Ohio republican vote in 1860 and ruined Chase’s chance of winning the candidacy lmao. They really hated each other but they hated Lincoln and Seward more phhh
