Writing prompt: Neither Ted nor Karen are bad people. I think they do love each other. (I try so hard to block out the Billy thing. It added nothing to the story.) I know I wrote in another fic, and I wrote them working it out. It was probably wishful thinking as a child of divorce. Anyway, I can also see them getting along better after they divorce, and Karen realizing that she also likes women. Especially when she helps Susan with her alcoholism and Susan reveals that she tried too hard to like men for her parents' sake. Anyway, Susan is a closeted lesbian and after getting out of rehab, she gets with Karen. Max, Mike, Nancy, and Holly become siblings. It would be so funny because Mike would be the perfect example of an annoying brother (not an abusive one) that she actually needs. Anyway, Mike and Max arguing like siblings, then Mike has no chance because Nancy backs Max up. Holly offers to back Mike up, but she has no clue what was going on. She's just trying to be helpful. Anyway, Max getting a whole ass family out of it as well as Susan. Ted is the supportive ex-husband who is trying to deal with his autistic burnout for the sake of his kids. Ooh, what if Ted realizes he might be gay? Who would he end up with? I'm calling it. None of these people in this family are straight. Time of Queerness: 1:53.

[a WIP project for a new show I've attached myself to recently. i know I more commonly post 'x reader' content. This is a new thing I want to try, especially when posting it publicly. I know it is an old show, but with the release of "The Pitt" I honestly love both characters in their respective shows ( both played by Noah Wyle. ) I'll add them to the list of "fandoms" I write for once I organize my account. Any feedback or interaction would be much appreciated<3]

Let The Game Begin
Alastor x GN! Reader
The 4 times Alastor bites you and the one time you bite back.
TW: Mentions that Alastor owns Reader’s soul. Biting and blood.
1st Time
The first time it had happened it honestly surprised the hell out of you, you were looking over some paperwork for Charlie regarding the new renovations that her dad had wanted to put in saying it was to bring in new guests. But looking at the duck themed statue has you confused but you didn’t bring it up yet. Taking your pen you wrote down what would seem best and not cost so much to get done, despite having magic abilities- you forbid the King (by bribing him with ducks) to use his magic to build anything more. You’d practically be out of a job then..and you don’t want Alastor to yank on your chain. Literally..you’d be no use for him here and you’d rather not be stuck behind the desk. You’d drive yourself to madness once more, but your husband would find a way for you to stay. You were his greatest treasure after all.
You were seemingly so focused on what was in front of you and what you were thinking that you failed to notice the red haired demon behind you, watching you and calling your name. How dare you ignore him? The man who brought you here. The man who has your soul in his clawed hands. But he couldn’t bring himself to summon your chain..as his eyes landed on your shoulder, a devious smile was on his lips and in a flash. One hand wrapped around your neck as he *bit* down causing you to let out a loud yelp. You couldn’t move away from him as he leaned back your crimson blood staining his teeth and lips. Oh..He adored that sound. He wanted more.
2nd Time
The second time was when you were sitting down next to him in the foyer as Charlie was talking about a new exercise. You were more or less paying attention, leaning against your hand as Alastor stood next to your seat. He was never the man to sit around for a long period of time especially when he had something important on his mind. You watched him tap the bottom of his cane to the tip of his shoe, making sure Charlie was focusing on something else you waved your hand to get his attention. Thankfully he had looked over the second you raised your hand but his tense shoulders slumped when he noticed you weren’t going to touch him. The golden band on your finger prominent in the light as you waved him down, he backed up bending by the waist to listen to you. “Go, Dear..I’ll cover for you..you got that distant look in your eyes.” You whispered out causing his smile to widen. Oh how he loved your keen eyes but he nodded and gently grabbed your hand to press a kiss to your palm. Your thumb brushing against his cheek, a discreet sentiment he always seemed to enjoy. You looked away for a split second feeling someone watching you (other than your husband) but then flinched feeling his sharp fangs dig into your palm before he smoothed it out with a lick from his tongue and a kiss to your knuckles. You turned to curse him but he was already gone, left with a red bite mark on your palm.
3rd Time
The third time was as surprising as the first one. Alastor was known for his cruelty, the way his anger had no bounds or limits. But walking with him to Cannibal Town to see Rosie, you missed sitting with her listening to the latest news and gossiping about people (..Susan..), had him on edge. You kept your distance from your husband upon his request as much as he adored your attention and touch, he didn’t want you to become an even bigger target than you already were from being so close to him. But the way random sinners who had the nerve to catcall you from across the street made him angrier by the second. You watched as your husband’s eye twitched but didn’t point it out, only walked faster to catch up with him.
What really hammered the nail into the coffin was when he had taken your arm to help you across the road, ever the suave gentlemen your husband was, and someone had the gall- no the nerve to flirt with you infront of his face before grabbing onto you like a rabid dog looking for a meal. Sharp static rang out as his horns grew bigger- his smile wider causing the sinner to tremble and fall back onto their own ass before a tendril shot out grabbing the sinner by their throat and slamming them into the wall. You watched him from the corner of your eye as you both continued to make your way to Cannibal Town..well Alastor had made the decision to make a quick detour. Pulling you away from prying eyes, he had you pinned against a wall as he bit down on your neck. Not hard enough to bite a chunk out of you, no..he couldn’t hurt his darling spouse. But he made sure you couldn’t hide the bite he was licking the blood off of…Rosie was going to have field day when she saw you.
4th Time
Now this was getting confused and annoying cause you don’t exactly know when your darling Husband would strike and bite down on you like some chew toy (..not that you aren’t happy about that), but it’s causing you to be paranoid as much as you love your husband, you’d rather not have to keep watching over your shoulder every second just to make sure your husband isn’t going to bite you. But you had let your guard down when cooking with him, well..you were in the kitchen reading as Alastor was cooking dinner. He had forbidden you from cooking after you had accidentally set the stove on fire. You don’t even know how it happened but allowed him to take control of the flames.
Looking up, you notice as he was standing beside you a lovestruck look on his face. It wasn’t long until you were swept away into a dance with him singing along to a tune in his own head, you let out a soft laugh allowing him to spin you away before pulling you back into him. The dance had ended with a gentle kiss as he realized that his focus was needed back on the food that was still cooking. But before you could pull away from his hold completely you once again felt his sharp teeth dig into your cheek. Letting out a soft grumble from his antics only to be met with a deep chuckle and the feeling of his tongue smoothing out where had bitten, likely wiping away any blood from your cheek before his attention was once again enraptured by cooking.
Biting Back
Alastor watched you as you talked with Charlie but your gaze kept falling onto him causing his smile to grow into a wicked one. Oh he was getting to you and he was enjoying it. How much longer can you keep that facade going? Could he finally break that little perfect facade you had or would you keep it up? Only time would tell. He tilted his head watching as you quickly excused yourself to walk towards him, “Is there a reason you are staring me down, Alastor?” You asked and he chuckled, “You’re losing yourself, Dear.” You sent a glare towards him before walking off. You knew he was right, you knew he could see right through your facade. You were his spouse after all, his confidant. But what he didn’t know is that you had a trick up your sleeve. Something he won't see coming.
You were going to wait until a private time to surprise your lovely husband but then he had to leave for an abrupt meeting with the overlords about new territory. You stood at the front doors with him, fixing his precious suit jacket as he watched you, a soft look in his crimson eyes. “There we go,” you hummed, wiping his jacket lapels down and motioning him down. He playfully rolled his eyes but bent down towards you, gently kissing his cheek, before biting down on his cheek and walking off. Not noticing how he jumped and stood straight up before letting out a loud laugh, “Is that all you have, Darling? Look at those teeth! Can’t rip flesh from bone!” He called out at your disappearing figure, oh you just started a game that you wouldn’t win.
Extra
Angel looked over at Husk who was busy shuffling Uno cards while the others sat around, “So….anybody else think their fuckin’?” He asked, causing Charlie to choke on her drink and the cards to fall out of Husk’s paws. Vaggie sent him a glare as Nifty laughed and Pentious blushed. “Watch it, Angel.” Husk growled out sending him a glare before glancing over to where you were fixing one of the beer taps on the bar, currently in your own world. “What? C’mon Whiskers, you have to know something about them.” Husk rolled his eyes collecting the cards up again as Nifty chimed in, “Oh they are married!” Husk coughed and glared at her causing everyone around to look surprised. “What? They…They married Smiles? Like…they wanted to?” Angel asked as Husk sighed nodding.
“They’ve been married for a few decades now.” He whispered out as Nifty nodded watching as he started to deal out the deck of cards. “But they are so sweet..very helpful too.” Charlie whispered out holding onto Vaggie’s hand and Husk sighed. “Listen..they are as bad as him but they tend to hide it more. They tend to like the game of cat and mouse more than him. But none of us pose a threat to them so they back off. But enough..focus on the game.” Husk grumbled as Angel rolled his eyes grabbing his cards.

English is not my first language, I apologize for any mistake. No beta, I reread it myself, I really hope it makes sense. I would particularly like to thank @arcanefox207 , @milla-frenchy and @aurorawritestoescape for their support, encouragement and kindness. Love you, girls ♥️
Chapter 1 | Series Masterlist | Masterlist
Coming out of the bathroom everything feels too loud, ringing voice of people, music, clanging of glasses, it's all too much to bear with when all you need right now is silence to make up with your overwhelming feelings spinning in your head like a carousel gone wild.
“I need to get out of here” you think, heading toward the Horowitz' living room in brisk steps to retrieve your purse.
Jane stops you in the track "Hey, where were you? We're having margarita, would you like some?"
You see him. behind Jane’s shoulder, through the door to the outside. He's back in the garden to his wife, holding an arm around her waist with a relaxed expression on his face, as if nothing has happened.
"I-uh-"
"Just sip this time, don't throw it down like you did before" Jane looks at you amused "I don't want to hold your hair while you vomit in one of Walkers' fancy bathrooms"
You nervously laugh then you look at him again and it's infuriating, the way he just goes on with his life while you feel like you've been hit by a train.
Fucking worthy of an Oscar.
The temptation to go home takes you for a moment but then looking at him smiling seraphically you think, “Fuck it, I don't see why I should ruin my day for him.”
So you follow Jane into the garden to join the others.
“If he can play it cool I can too” you think ”nothing a nice margarita can't fix.”
You walk past him and see that he and his wife are talking to Edie and her new boyfriend.
He doesn't even look at you, as if you are back a figure in the background with the others.
Which actually makes sense; the opposite would be much stranger since in the eyes of everyone you are nothing more than mere neighbors.
“Dave, look, Carol left lipstick on your lips,” you hear Edie say giggling as you sit at the table with your friends, ”you two lovebirds, you're still so cute after so many years of marriage.”
You feel your heart jump into your throat but you try to maintain composure outside and greeting Susan and Emma that just arrived “fuck” you think, cursing Edie and her big mouth “Now she's going to realize it's not her lipstick, God, I'm so screwed”.
You talked to her before but now in your panic you can't even remember what lipstick she was wearing.
You smile quizzically at Gabby who hands you one of the margaritas a waiter just left at your table but you perk up your ears to catch whatever they're saying; for a moment it's all silent until you hear Carol's crystalline laughter.
You barely turn to observe them out of the corner of your eye as you take a sip of your cocktail and see that Carol is wearing a lipstick very similar to yours. You're not a church girl but right now you're literally praying that one stupid kiss doesn't make you the laughingstock of the neighborhood.
Damn you, Dave.
Carol pulls a tissue out of her purse and hands it to him.
Okay, she’s quiet. Or at least she seems to be.
And who would ever connect me and Dave anyway?
You shake yourself out of your thoughts when you hear Jane call your name “hey! are you still with us?”
You smile “yes, sorry, I was thinking about work, you know that presentation I have to give on Monday” and you squeeze into your shoulders “what were you saying?”
Jane rolls her eyes “ugh, work. I was saying we're meeting tomorrow afternoon at my house for poker, are you coming?”
“Of course I'm coming, and I plan to tear you all apart!”
Jane, Gabby, Susan and Emma all say in chorus “we'll see about that!”You laugh and sip on your margarita again trying to appease your nerves, the liquid slide cool down your throat and you savor the citrusy flavor on your tongue thinking "it's good. it's all good. I will cut that Dave bullshit out of my life and everything will be great"
The rest of the afternoon passes pleasantly, you drink another margarita while chatting with your friends, you grab some snacks from the buffet so you don't risk forcing Jane to hold your hair in the bathroom, and you feel like you have regained some mental stability.
Dave is still here, looking like the perfect picture of a man trying to spend quality time with his beloved wife.
They talk to neighbors, they laugh, she holds a hand in his tracing small concentric circles on his back.
All smooth, I can't believe it, you sigh as you finish your second margarita.
Ms. Horowitz goes between tables to tell you that anyone who wants can take advantage of the pool, all your friends thank her saying they will do so shortly, and you reply, “Oh,I don't have my bathing suit with me,” wondering if anyone has ever told you to bring it. From the way Jane looks at you with an amused expression you guess that yes, she had told you but you completely forgot in your frenzy to look good in front of Dave in your new shoes.
Being in a bathing suit in front of him is not something you could afford to contemplate and you can't do it now either so you try to shy away from her invitation as politely as you can, but Mrs. Horowitz presses you, “that's no problem, dear, we have dozens of bathing suits for our guests!”
“Of course. I forgot that if they wanted to they could swim in a pool full of money like Scrooge McDuck.”
At this point you can do nothing than accept.
Carlos and Rafael managed to disengage under the guise of joining Mr. Horowitz and other neighbors in the living room to watch whatever is going to be on the sports channel. And these are the moments when you wish you were someone who knows about sports.
“You can go to the pool house and change there, you will find swimsuits and towels in the closet,” Mrs. Horowitz chirps.
And so you do, you head for the pool house teetering on your new heels, thinking maybe you shouldn't swim at all because you're feeling a little tipsy.
“God, I really don't feel like it,” you say to Susan who is beside you, and she replies, ”oh come on, it will be fun!”
You already hear some splashing coming from the pool as you enter the little house.
It is luxuriously furnished like a real outhouse, there is a huge bed, a small kitchen, and a door on the right side that leads to a bathroom. Someone could actively live in here like a king.
Susan opens the closet that takes up the entire wall in front of the bed and finds dozens of bikinis and one-piece suits. “Jesus, they could open a swimsuit store with all this stuff.”
You laugh, tapping her on the side “make room” Susan pinches your arm “rude!” she sneers.
Emma, Jane and Gabrielle laugh. You choose a swimsuit as they take turns to change into the bathroom.
____________________________________
You walk out of the pool house wearing a black bikini, holding the towel wrapped around you. You chose the simplest model you could find that wasn't a one-piece swimsuit, because you always thought you looked like your grandmother in those.
You don't want to stand out but neither do you want to feel ridiculous at the idea of Dave seeing you.
You hope he has already gone home until you reach the pool and see him diving off the small diving board located on one of the short sides.
By now it's evening so several strings of small lights have been lit and hung directly above the pool like small fireflies floating in the air and scattered over the buffet and beverage gazebos.
There are also several garden street lamps around, but the small lights create an enchanting atmosphere.
Mr. and Mrs. Horowitz really know how to throw a great party.
Dave's back looks golden as you watch him disappear into the water, his muscles outlined by the play of light and shadow that refracts against them. You bury a howl inside as you steal a glance at his butt swaddled deliciously in red swimming shorts.
You sit on a lawn chair, fully intending to stay there, while your friends put their towels down and go for a dip in the pool.
It's still warm for fall, today in particular, so you don't mind the thing itself, but showing yourself to Dave like this? That's a whole other matter.
The whole neighborhood is there but you literally feel like only he can see you, because that's the only look you care about and might feel judged by.
Your friends wave at you from the other side of the pool, even calling your name so you listlessly drop the towel on the deck chair and walk to the edge, wetting your feet in the cool water.
Out of the corner of your eye you see Dave go underwater, you follow his movements, and see him come up right in front of you.
“Fuck” you think
“Hi,” he says in a low voice as you wonder where his wife is. You answer him by mumbling a “hello” as you look around for her. Carol is sitting on a lawn chair, wearing a white one-piece bathing suit and matching sarong, and sipping cocktails with one of your neighbors. She is quite distant and seems very engrossed in the conversation, so you finally allow yourself to look at Dave.
He's still in the water, leaning against the edge below you.
He runs a hand through his hair to pull it back, small droplets sliding down his perfectly chiseled jaw to the column of his neck and down his broad chest until they die at the water's edge.
Your friends call your name loudly as he rests both hands on the edge and rises effortlessly beside you. You don't look at him, you keep your gaze fixed on Jane and the others as you hear the sound of water sliding over his body and falling back into the pool, a few drops hitting you in the process. He is beside you, completely wet, wearing only shorts. You’re petrified, trying to govern your emotions and especially your facial expressions “stay calm stay calm stay calm” you repeat to yourself as you hear his voice whisper “you look so fucking sexy in that bikini. I wish I could fuck you right here right now” just before he walks over to the loungers.
He didn't turn around, he didn't make eye contact with you, no one would say he even noticed you, and he spoke so softly that no one could have heard him but you. You heard him loud and clear, and his rough voice went and settled directly between your legs on your wet pussy.
You hastily dive into the pool feeling your cheeks on fire.
“Fucking Dave and his fucking flirting.”
_________________________________________
First thing you do when you come home is to take off your shoes throwing on the carpet in your living room.
By now you are no longer tipsy; swimming in the pool has definitely helped you get sober again.
And Dave.
Dave who ignored you pretty much the rest of the evening but infiltrated your brain like a disease.
You know you can't get your hopes up, you know that this thing between the two of you will have no future, and you also know that you don't like being a home wrecker.
I am just an escape from his marriage, a sleazy adventure, a little toy to entertain him.
And yet, you still want more.
Your body unfortunately doesn't care about morality right now, it reacts to every image of him imprinted in your mind, Dave is Pavlov's bell and you are the drooling dog.
Lingering in fantasies about him hurts, but there is a desperate part of you that still feels his hips grinding against yours, the taste of his tongue, the warmth of his big hands on you.
And his body next to yours when he got out of the pool, how you could smell the scent of his skin mixed with chlorine, how you could still feel the warmth of his body despite being completely wet, water dripping down his legs pooling at his feet.
You can stay here a little longer, just a little while longer without hurting anyone, before you turn the page.
You shuffle into your room with your head in the clouds, open your night stand drawer almost without thinking, pull out your dildo and lie on the bed. You loop your dress around your waist without even bothering to take it off, just enough to get rid of your bra and your panties.
You let the dildo glide over your body, shivering at the feel of the cool plastic on your tits, brushing against your nipples.
The low rasp of his voice still in your mind, graveling like an echo in your brain “you look so fucking sexy in that bikini”
It was the first time you saw him like that, you happened to see some exposed skin as he mowed the lawn, even lifting up his shirt to wipe the sweat off his forehead once he was done but what you saw today? Nothing compares with it.
His fully exposed torso, the darting muscles of his back as he dove, how his arms flexed as he leaned over the edge of the pool. There is something obscene about seeing people completely wet, a primal instinct awakening, the water slipping and hugging the curves of his body, the droplets of water glistening on his skin, the wet shorts glued to his body that barely suggested the shape of him.
You shut your eyes and suddenly it’s his cock wiping on your hardened buds, tip slapping and teasing, brushing on your skin just right, red and swollen and already leaking.
You can think it’s real, it feels so real, his hand roaming on your body, pulling your dress up, get it out of the way to dispose of you as he wants.
Big strong hand gripping on your inner thighs, his fingers rising higher on your skin, making you whimper in anticipation.
Your cunt aching tremendously, unrestrained and starving.
His big cock grazing your swollen labia, parting them and then sliding entirely over your center, his tip slamming against your clit, mingling your essences in an overwhelming arousal that runs through you all.
And then he pushes inside, deeper and deeper in the most intimate part of you.
And that’s it.
You are fucking away all your bad omens, lying to your hands sinking into the flesh of your thighs, your heart pounding behind your ribcage, your hips swaying against the rubber dildo, pushing them away to suppress them. All frenzy and delirium as it is his cock kissing your cervix, stretching your walls, pulsing and dripping inside you.
You can’t stop, angling the dildo so that it brushes against your swollen clit pumping incessantly into your core, creaming the entire length of your dildo, your legs obscenely spread, your body torn apart by every thrust, your hungry pussy sucking in, contracting, devouring every inch without finding peace.
"I wish I could fuck you right here right now"
Your free hand rises on your tit, your fingers latched on your pebbled nipple, pulling and twisting until you feel your brain leaking from your pussy.
Your orgasm breaks inside you, vibrating in and out of your body, quivering on your sweaty skin, taking your breath away. You come thinking of him completely wet from head to toe on top of you, your flesh colliding, your bodies merging, in a desperate, relentless rush toward the brink.
And you can't get enough, so you don't stop as the first orgasm washes over you, your swollen, slippery cunt keeps frantically gripping around the dildo, your hands keep thrusting it in, torturing your nipples, it's like you're trying to quench your thirst once and for all.
The way he ignored you afterward makes you want to have him even more, to break through his stoicism and trigger an outburst in him as much as your own.
It's twisted, wrong, immoral and you don't care a bit.
You fall into a deep sleep, having come repeatedly, Dave being all that's left in your head.
______________________________________
Morning light flutters on your eyelids forcing you to open your eyes to another day.
You grunt, feeling your incredibly aching pussy, and realize your dildo is still inside you.
The stretch is here to remind you your guilt, the frenzy that took you last night, the feeling of being just one inch away from slipping into something dangerous.
You pull it out cautiously, feeling your essence slip out of you, soaking your inner thigh, the sticky mess of your desire for him dribbling silently over your skin.
Your pussy tightens around nothing, pulsing to the void, deprived of something, swollen and tried.
The dress from the night before is still crumpled around your body, crumpled and damp with your sweat and arousal at the hem. You get out of bed feeling like a rag doll, drag yourself into the bathroom and look in the mirror. Mascara has run down your cheeks, your lipstick smudged, an exhausted and defeated expression on your face.
You look like a total disaster, matching your feelings.
This morning, in the sunlight, you are furious with yourself. Why did you let this married man condition you so much? You spent $350 on a pair of shoes just because he told you they'd fit you, what the fuck is wrong with you?
You have to stop before it takes a turn for the worse and you find yourself crying for him.
There's no way it will end well.
You take off your makeup, take a shower, and change into a pair of sweatpants and an old Pearl Jam T-shirt you got at a concert a million years ago.
You clean and tidy your house, then Jane calls to have your confirmation to meet at 3 p.m. at her house.
Having a fun afternoon with your friend will help, you think.
You don't look out the window toward his house even once, you simply pretend it doesn't exist.
After changing into a pair of jeans and a white top, you head towards Jane’s house at the end of the road, your eyes straight to her house without your usual wandering and sneaking through your neighbor’s windows.
You are able to shut down your brain concentrating on poker and your friend and it all goes smooth until you hear Susan say, “Did Edie call you to gossip about the Yorks?” And you all turn to look at her, you with your heart leaping in your chest like an acrobat.
“Really? Was it only me who had this pleasure?” she says, rolling her eyes.
“Why, what happened?” Jane asks as she shuffles the cards for the next hand.
“According to her, Dave has an affair. But you know how Edie is, I mean-”
"And how can she say that?" Gabby widen her eyes, getting all excited. You love her dearly but she’s almost as gossipy as Edie sometimes.
"She says Dave disappeared at the party and then came back with some lipstick on his mouth."
“What?” you all exclaim, as you try with all your might to feign surprise.
“Yes, and then she says Carol pretended nothing happened but according to Edie there is something going on because you know - she says that lipstick seemed slightly different from the one his wife was wearing”
“Well that also depends on lips natural color,” Jane tries to intervene, usually she's the one who instead tries to quell the rumors. You are thankful that she maintains her attitude even now, all while your other friends cut her off squeaking “oh my God!” And Gabby, who sits right next to you put a hand on your arm “Jesus, can you believe that?”
“Actually no” you shrug “I mean…they seem so close-hearted”
“Well, honey, I'm sorry to tell you but not all that glitters is gold” Gabby scoffs.
“Even if it was true - and with Edie I wouldn't put my hand on it because she was really tipsy and then well...she's Edie” Jane admonishes “it's none of our business”
“God, he would be such a scam though. And to think I kinda considered him incorruptible” Emma sighs and you all nod.
You never mentioned your crush, not even to the friends.
No one ever saw you two talk for more than a few minutes and only of mundane arguments, totally out of courtesy and being good neighbors.
Fuck. It has to end before anyone finds out.
The bullet missed you by a whisker but you know you can't play with fire.
“Then you wonder why I haven't found another boyfriend yet!” You playfully snap, just to look more unsuspicious.
You hate lying to your friends, but you are relieved when you see them nodding.
Jane urges, “Come on let's play, we've talked enough about this.”
The afternoon flows nicely, Jane and Gabi argue over points as usual, you all laugh, and by the end you feel better, really better.
Yesterday was crazy, but I can get through it, you think.
When you get home you order a pizza and eat it on the couch watching a horror movie. You don't think about him for the rest of the evening, until you get under the covers and a flashback of him pushing you against the bathroom tiles flashes before your eyes. You squeeze them hard, trying to banish the image from your mind.
________________________________________
Monday morning at the office hits you in the face, you have a lot of work to do but you've never been so happy to keep busy so you don’t complain. Anything goes as long as you don't think about him.
Your agency has just acquired a big client for whom you'll have to manage a marketing campaign, there's a lot of pressure but by the end of the morning you feel like you and the rest of the team have come up with the right idea, which makes you relieved.
At lunchtime you go out to get a sandwich. It's a beautiful sunny day, there’s a little wind that caresses your face and moves the tree canopies along the road. You're glad you've been able to focus, you really care about doing a good job and making a good impression on your demanding boss in light of a promotion you'd like to get.
You will slowly return to your usual life and what happened will remain a sporadic episode without consequences. That's the best thing for everyone.
You walk into the diner and get in line to order a sandwich.
You greet Sarah, the girl at the counter, with whom you've been chatting since the first day you were hired at your agency.
You order the usual and come out humming and feeling some lightness at last.
You walk the short distance to your office, and the moment you push the door open you feel a gaze on you, like in déjà vu. You turn to look at the street, and see no one, just a black car that takes off quickly, speeding down the empty road. For a moment it looks like Dave's. You blink your eyes and shake your head, feeling lost.
It's like you've taken one step forward and three steps back.
It will take much longer to eradicate him from your mind, and living in the same neighborhood across the street from each other certainly won't help.
You come home tired, you managed to do a good job despite the thought of Dave that kept pounding in your head all afternoon, at least you can be satisfied with that.
You park in your driveway and out of the corner of your eye you see Carol loading suitcases into a cab.
Shit, what's going on? Was Edie right? Did they really have a fight? Is she leaving him?
You start toward your door but then stay on the porch pretending to rummage through your purse for your keys.
You see Dave leave the house with his daughters, he helps Carol with the heaviest suitcase and they briefly say something you can’t hear. You hold your breath for a signal, something that will let you know what they’re doing, but it all seems neutral, calm, no drama, no screaming fight in the middle of the street. Typical of them, you think, they would never do that in front of their daughters anyway.
Molly and Alice hug their father and happily get into the taxi, sitting in the back, Alice holding a doll which she places next to her on the seat.
Carol kisses Dave on the cheek and climbs into the cab with the girls. As you watch them leave your mind is filled with question marks, it didn't seem like a traumatic departure but you know they are the best at keeping up appearances. And deep down, what do you really know about Carol and Dave? What really happens when the doors are closed and they are far from the rest of the world? Are they really the perfect family they pretend to be?
Dave is on the sidewalk waving to the cab pulling away, as soon as it's far enough away he turns to look at you and winks.

Enjoy <3
You wake to the sound of a door slamming. Your head is spinning as you look round the room. There’s a throbbing in the back of you head. You look up seeing Jack walking over to you.
“What didn’t get enough in Syria?” You ask as he stops at your feet. You’re nervous you don’t know what to say, you just hope they’re on their way. Jack isn’t saying anything. You feel sick with the throbbing in your head.
“Don’t flatter yourself I don’t care about you just your boyfriends.” He says walking over to a table. You can make out a bunch of equipment, weapons, knives, ammo. You look round the rest of the room. The curtains have all been drawn closed, you can’t tell if the sun is up or not. There are no clocks, you can’t hear anything to indicate where you are. Maybe it’s just your head spinning but it’s not helping you place the ambience.
“What is your obsession with them?” You ask. He stays silent as he picks a knife off the table. You sigh, there is no way he’s going to do anything. You really try hard to believe it, although he seems very much unhinged. You need to make a plan in your head if Simon and Johnny are not coming. Dying is not an option, or alt least you hope not, if he killed you he won’t be able to get intel from you. Maybe he doesn’t want to kill you, this seems like a different play.
“I’m not obsessed, I just want to provide for my family.” He says, he sounds somewhat defeated. Maybe what was supposed to have happened hasn't happened yet. Or maybe he’s trying to buy time and lower your defences.
“Susan is your wife right, Chloe’s older sister? I know you have a kid with her, I met her she’s cute.” You say, watching him as his fingers run over the blade of the knife. The door to the room opening pulls your attention away. It’s Mark. Fucking Mark. Jack turns his attention away from you looking over at him.
You can see a phone in his hands. Jack nods, he walks towards you bringing the knife up to your face. He looks at you for a second before slashing your cheek. It burns like a hot rod has just been pressed up against your face. Your arms pop uncomfortably as your body tries to force them to your face but they’re tightly bound behind your back. You swear as your face heats up blood dripping down your cheek. It must be a deep cut since Jack also looks slightly concerned for a moment.
“Get the phone ready.” Jack says. You look over at Mark as he fumbles with the phone in his hands, it’s your phone you recognise the case. Mark moves it in his hands so its horizontal.
“Try to look sad for the camera.” Jack says as he moves round behind you. He grips your hair so you’re face is straight looking towards Mark.
“We want to make a trade. Every single piece of intel you have as well as the guarantee you will leave us alone. Then we promise to return this one to you and we won’t hurt another hair on her pretty little head.” Jack says as his confidence seems to grow. That’s what you’re here for, you’re a bargaining chip. You’re pretty much worthless. Maybe you still have chance to appeal to their humanity. If there is anything left.
“You sound like a shitty terrorist organisation.” You say scoffing. Jack huffs as he presses the knife into your neck, gripping your hair tighter. It sends a shooting pain down your body, you can still feel blood pooling down your cheek and neck.
“You have one hour to respond to the attached number or we kill her.” Jack says. Your stomach drops. You don’t want to die but you hold it together keeping your expression at least neutral. Jack lets go of your hair walking over to Mike. Mike leans in and you hear them re-watching the video. They really do sound like amateurs.
“Send it with the number.” Jack says. “As soon as it’s sent turn the phone back off.” You look over at Mike and Jack. You hang your head your cheek still burning, a shiver runs through you as the adrenaline wears off. You feel sick again thinking back to the safehouse. Maybe you should have fought.
——————————
The text comes through on Johnny and Simon’s phone. It’s a video, a video of you with Jack stood behind you pressing a knife into the side of your throat. Ghost looks over at Soap, his eyes are hard as he presses play on the video.
There is no audio from his phone but Ghost can tell it’s upsetting him. Soap looks up at him. It’s okay, keep it together. Is what Ghost wants to tell Soap, but he cant. He looks back down at his phone.
“What is it?” Price asks walking into the room. Ghost sighs handing his phone to Price. He plays the video, Gaz looks over Price’s shoulder as Jack’s voice fills the room. Ghost watches Soap tense when your voice comes through the phone speakers. Johnny has already tried to call you but the phone must be off again since the call doesn’t go through. It was too quick to trace they weren't prepared.
“Hang on a second, that number is one of the burner phones.” Price says walking away from the table over to a case, he pulls it open and sure enough there is a phone missing.
“We can trace that, it has an additional tracker in it, it doesn’t matter if the phone is off.” Ghost wants to smile, but he keeps his eyes on Soap as Gaz comes over with a laptop. Price stands next to him showing him were to look. No one says anything as Ghost finds himself holding his breath.
“Harrow.” Gaz says as Price stands up straight.
“Where’s that?” Soap asks.
“West, it’ll take us at least 40 minutes to get out there. That’s assuming she's in the same place as the burner phone.” Gaz says.
“How accurate is the tracker?” Ghost asks.
“Very.” Price replies. “Do they have any houses in that area? Any property they own or even have their names attached to?”
“I can check it could take a while though.” Gaz says.
“Okay lets move we’ll drive out there, you can search on the way.” Price says. Everyone nods as he goes back over to the kit to grab the rest of the burner phones. Soap does not wait rushing out towards the garage. Ghost catches up to him pulling him in and locking the door behind him.
“Look at me.” Simon demands, pulling Johnny’s chin. Johnny fights him so Simon has to resort to gripping his hair. He uses his free hand to pull his mask up and over his head while he presses himself up against Johnny pinning him to the wall.
“Look at me.” Simon demands again following Johnny’s eyeline. Johnny is still fighting under Simon’s grasp. He presses his lips up to Johnny, hes tense, he won’t kiss Simon back at first, eventually he relents. Johnny lets out a sigh as drops his shoulders and opens his mouth letting Simon in, he loosens his grip on Johnny. Simon breaks away looking in his husbands eyes, he’s never seen him like this before. Scared, angry, like he has nothing to lose.
“We’re going to get her Johnny, look at me.” Simon says, still gripping his hair.
“We’re going to get her and bring her home safe.”
“You don’t know that,” Johnny whispers barely audible, as he hangs his head. Simon sighs, he knows Johnny could be right, they don’t have control over the situation.
“We’ll find her, and we’ll bring her home. But I need you to focus Soap. We need to, we’re no use to her if we can’t focus.” Simon says kissing him again on the forehead.
Johnny looks up at him and nods, the fear washed off his face and replaced with anger, determination. Simon lets out a small sigh, that’s the Johnny he wants to see. There is a knock on the door behind Johnny. Simon pulls his mask back down moving away to open the door.
“Ready?” Price asks with Gaz stood behind him.
——————————
“It’s been almost an hour and we’ve heard nothing.” You hear Jack say, he sounds angry. You face is stinging, they didn’t treat the wound but the bleeding seems to of slowed. All you can feel is the numbness in your feet and hands from the zipties and the pain in your cheek. You’re trying to listen to their conversation. Most of the time you can’t hear it. It’s only when Jack or Mark raise their voices you get snippets.
You look up at them. Jack looks nervous, Mark more put together, both stood with their arms crossed across the room. Jack’s been tapping his foot, or when he’s sat down you watch his leg bounce. Maybe he is worried about having to kill you.
This is starting to feel too familiar. At least in Syria the sleep deprivation was so bad you were basically in an asleep semi-conscious haze. At least after a few hours you got used to the routine, knew what to expect. At least Simon and Johnny were there. You swallow the lump the pit forming back in your stomach. You had no idea what Jack might do to you, you just have to stay strong. Do not give him the satisfaction of seeing you upset or panic.
“Maybe you’re wrong.” Mark says. You don’t hear Jacks response but they both stand back up coming towards you. Mark is taking your phone out again. Great time for another video.
“Shame you don’t have the budget for a makeup department.” You say as Jack grips your head again painfully pulling your head up. The knife is back at your throat only this time instead of the tip being pressed into the side of your neck the blade is resting across the front.
You shiver as the cold metal presses into your neck enough that if you were to move you would get cut. You swallow hard, the jolting of your head has opened your cheek wound again as you feel blood trickling down your face. You watch as Mark nods at Jack holding the phone in-front of you.
“Almost an hour, your clock is ticking.” Jack says. You feel the knife moved from your neck as it making it’s way to the wound on your face. He presses it in and you have to grit your teeth to stop a pained yelp escaping your body. You’re holding your breath as heat rushes to your face, the knife disturbing the wound enough it’s bleeding profusely again.
“I said I wouldn’t hurt another hair on her head but I’m getting impatient!” Jack snaps, his confidence seems to be growing even if he doesn’t show it when the camera is off.
“Contact the number to arrange a swap, you have an extra half hour before I start cutting pieces off.” He spits. Mark puts the camera down and Jack releces your head going over to watch it. You hear the playback as they nod at each other.
He’s gone from killing you to cutting pieces off. You start going round your body in your head. Which parts you think you’ll miss the least. Maybe your ears, toes, you want to keep your fingers. You can’t be a nurse without functioning hands.
——————————
Another video another threat. A new time, he’s given them an extra half an hour.
“Take a left up here.” Gaz says he’s in the front with Price leading the way to the burner phones ping. It almost looks like they’re being driven into an industrial estate. It’s dark bar a few warehouses with 24/7 service.
“Keep going it’s through that gate 500 meters.” Gaz says pointing at the only open gate on the road leading into what looks like a van rental place.
“What is this place?” Price asks.
“The Masons own it, it’s a van rental, since 2020.” Soap says looking up from his laptop. There is one car in the whole parking lot Price drives up and parks behind it. There is one of those one story prefab buildings which looks like the main office, assuming there is someone here the likely hood is they’re in that building. Price kills the engine, and everyone gets out. Soap opens the boot as we grab our weapons.
Price doesn’t need to say anything, it’s automatic. He leads with Soap and Gaz following while Ghost takes the rear. There doesn’t seem to be any lights on in the building but the windows also look boarded up. Price makes it to the door Soap takes the other side and Ghost moves into position to kick it down. Price nods at Ghost who takes a breath the kicks the door right by the handle.
It swings open and light floods out. Price, Gaz and Soap all pile into the tiny building, Ghost hears shouting as Price pushes a man to the floor. Ghost closes the door behind him as he enters quickly checking the other end of the building. It’s small just a waiting area, a toilet and a few desks. The rest of the place is clear and Ghost comes back to Price helping the man up to his feet.
“Let’s have a chat.” Price asks, forcing him to sit down in a chair, his hands ziptied to his back. Gaz goes over to help Price secure his feet while Soap and Ghost keep their weapons trained on him. The man shakes his head.
“Harry.” Soap says. “I recognise him from the funereal one of Chloe’s brothers.”
“Okay, Harry you know what we want and if you give us what we want we won’t kill you how does that sound for a deal?” Price says stepping in-front of him.
“Go to hell! You might as well kill me, if Jack finds out I’ve snitched I’ll be dead anyway!” Harry shouts. Price sighs looking over at Ghost for a few seconds. This was going to get messy.
“Let’s try that again. Where is she?” Price asks getting up in his face. Harry doesn’t say anything, Ghost goes to take a step forward as Price moves out the way but Soap beats him too it. Before anyone can say anything Soap thrusts a knife in Harry’s thigh. He screams thrashing in the chair as Soap goes back to stand next to Ghost, Price looks at him approvingly before going back over to Harry.
“Tell us where they’re hiding!” Price shouts, over Harry’s moans and whimpers. Ghost can see tears running down his cheeks. Soap missed his femoral artery, he would have bled out by now and they would have nothing. Ghost looked over at Soap his expression hard, he has barely said a word since they left the house. Harry has stopped screaming as Price holds his head up barking more questions at him. Ghost knows they can’t wait too long, this interrogation needs to give them something to work with.
“Harrow.” Harry says through a sob. “There’s a house in Harrow that’s where she is.” Price picks up the burner phone from the floor.
“Let’s go.” Price says. Heading for the door.
“What about me!” Harry calls. Price doesn’t say anything as Gaz follows him out Soap is still staring at Harry.
“Let’s go Soap.” Ghost says lacing his voice with authority so he’ll listen. He watches him turn away and wait’s until Soap is out the door on Gaz’s heals before Ghost turns off the lights and closes the door behind him.
——————————
You’re alone in the room now. Jack and Mark both stepped out awhile ago. It feels like it’s been forever when you have no concept of time and your body is in pain. You’ve tried pulling at your restraint’s even played with the idea of breaking your thumb to try and get out.
You have no idea if it would work though of if it was one of those stupid movie tropes. Besides these bindings are tight, the lack of circulation to your hands and feet has you a little concerned. The gash on your cheek which had been reopened with a knife so you're basically guaranteed to get an infection.
You’re still triaging your body when Mark and Jack burst into the room. They’re carrying weapons. Something must have happened or maybe your time is up.
“What about Brian!?” Mark asks. Jack doesn’t say anything. Who the fuck is Brain?
“Get in the corner.” Jack orders as he comes over to you. You feel the barrel of a gun pressed up against the back of your head. Jack seems to change his mind though pulling out his pistol pressing it to your temple. You hear shots, they sound distant but close at the same time. This house must be massive, you don’t know which house you’re in it’s one you’ve never been to.
Your heart picks up, they’re here. This is going to be the final stand off, this could be the end. At least he’ll shoot you. It will be quick. Mark ducks in the far right corner of the room. The door swings inwards, they won’t see him right away. There are voices now, you think you hear Johnny, you almost want to call out to him, but you bite your tongue.
Jack is using your body to shield him, you’re almost shaking as you hear the voices get closer and closer. Before you have time to think about how you can help the the door swings open. Price walks in first, then Johnny, then Gaz then Simon.
Jack grips your hair pressing the barrel of the gun harder into your temple. You let out a sigh, you don’t know if it’s relief or not but they're here. Before you can warn them Mark is already out the corner, they’re surrounded. But there are only 2 of them. Simon and Gaz spin round to train their weapons on Mark while Price and Johnny have their weapons held up at you. Or more the man behind you pulling your hair so tight you think he might rip it off.
“Let her go Jack it doesn’t have to end this way.” Price says. “You can still walk out here alive no one has to die.”
“All I wanted was for you to leave us alone.” Jack says scoffing. “You caused this, you all caused this.” You want Johnny to look at you his expression is twisted into something you’ve never seen before, anger, he looks so angry it makes you feel sick. You watch Simon’s back, his foot moves to touch Johnny so their heel to heel.
“You got yourself involved in a whole world of bother.” Price says. “Thats not our fault.”
“It is!” Jack snaps pulling your head back sharply, you hear it click.
“All I want is to provide for my family. What do you not understand about that! Why can’t you just leave us alone!” His voice cracks at the end of the sentence. He’s becoming unhinged, he could shoot you at any point and be over with it.
“You can’t provide for you’re family if you’re dead. Let her go and we’ll let you both walk out of here.” Price says.
“I want all the intel you gathered.” Jack says. It’s a negotiation now. Price nods reaching into his vest and pulling out some keys. He holds them up clearly so Jack can see.
“There’s a car outside with everything we have.” Price shakes the keys. It’s almost like you can feel Jack thinking weighing up his options.
Then everything happens so fast, the keys are thrown in the air.
There is a shot, then another.
You feel a pain in the side of your head as Jacks grip leaves your hair.
You hear shouting and see Johnny running towards you. There’s a ringing in your ear as you feel blood running down the side of your head. Where you shot?
You watch as Johnny flicks open a knife cutting the zipties on your feet. You can’t hear what he’s saying the buzzing is still loud in your ears. He moves behind you as you see Simon get up from next to Marks body.
As your wrists are freed your hand goes up to the side of your head. You feel warm blood but it’s not your head that’s been hit, it’s your ear. The ringing subsides and you hear Jack moaning he’s not dead. Price comes over to you placing his hand on your shoulder while he looks you over. He reaches into a pouch on his vest pulling out some gauze.
“You okay?” You think he asks. You nod as he presses the gauze to your ear. You hold it for him feeling the blood quickly soak the bandage. You hear zipties and turn to see Johnny pulling them closed around Jack’s wrists. He’s laid on his back with Johnny’s knee on his legs, he’s been hit in the shoulder, you can see the blood pooling on the floor.
Price walks round to him as he hands you more gauze and you look over at Simon and Gaz. Simon walks over to you his hand resting on your shoulder for a second as he goes over to join Price. You breathe out a massive sigh of relief as Johnny bends down in front of you.
“You okay lass?” Johnny asks taking the gauze out your hand and patting your cheek wound, you wince as he presses but you try not to move. All you can do is nod still trying to process what just happened.
You hear Jack shouting, looking past Johnny you see Gaz standing off to the side of the door. Johnny stands up and smiles down at you his hand rubbing your good cheek. You smile back at him.
You’re about to get up when you hear another shot. You look over at Gaz turning around, another shot rings out. You see someone in the doorway fall to the floor.
You look back at Johnny. His expression has changed, there is fear in his eyes. You don’t have time to think as he falls to the floor.
“Johnny!” You scream pushing yourself off the chair, your legs give way under you as you fall to your knees next to him. You see the blood, he’s been hit. You’re already pulling his vest off when Gaz comes over.
“Watch the door!” You hear someone shout, you think it’s Price. Gaz stops in his tracks and heads back to the door. You pull Johnny’s shirt up. There are multiple wounds, you see the shrapnel stuck in the front of his vest.
He was shot from behind, this is a through and through.
The vest fractured the bullet, then stopped it from hitting you.
You feel sick. You look over at Gaz watching the door. Simon bends down on the other side of Johnny. You look up at him tears streaming down your face. You force yourself to focus. You can save him you have to save him.
“Give me your medical pouch!” You shout at Simon. He nods and hands it to you. You’re not thinking about what’s going on around you. You’re pulling on gloves watching the colour drain from Johnny’s face. You hear Price talking, Simon get’s to his feet, there’s radio noises, a dial tone. You press gauze into Johnny’s wounds. You can still hear Jack shouting.
“You’re not dying Johnny not today!” You shout letting the adrenaline pulse through your body your own pain forgotten about. You just need to get this bleeding under control.
You’re not dying Johnny not today…

“BETWEEN YESTERDAY AFTERNOON AND EARLY THIS MORNING, OUR KILDARE COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT CARRIED OUT SEVERAL ARRESTS IN THE MURDER CASES OF SUSAN PETERKIN, GAVIN BARNSTEAD, BIG JOHN ROUTLEDGE, AND OWEN CARTER.” Shoupe’s voice traveled from the small speaker of your phone. You were watching the local news — you, JJ, John B, Pope, and Kiara all sitting out on the pier behind The Chateau. It was still early, the sun just settling in the sky, providing a comforting warmth over the five of you.
JJ was laid outstretched on on the boat, head buried in his arms while Pope stood with his hands in his pockets. Kiara was kicking her feet, sitting on the wood of the dock as you and JB stood side by side, eyes glued to the phone screen as Shoupe continued giving his statement. “...The individuals in custody are our department pathologist Mark Daniels, officer Shane Graves, local attorney Rebecca Reyes, and Rafe Cameron.” Shoupe explained, swallowing harshly. “Unfortunately, our prime suspect, Ward Cameron was the victim of an explosion late yesterday afternoon. The other trials will take place in the following weeks, more updates are to come. Thank you for your time.” And then he was walking away from the podium swiftly, head down as chatter erupted and cameras flashed, the program cutting back to it’s anchor.
You sighed, powering off the phone and sliding it into your back pocket.
“...He deserved it, right?” JJ asked, lifting his head from his arms and squinting his eyes from the harsh sun.
“Of course he deserved it.” Pope added, sitting down on the boat.”I’ve just...never seen anyone blow themselves up like that.”
“Cross that one off the bucket list.” The blonde shrugged, laying his head back down.
“Dude.” Pope said sternly, shooting JJ a look of warning as Kiara rounded the dock and sat herself next to John B who’d taken a seat inside.
Planting a gentle hand on his back, she spoke to him softly. “Are you okay?”
John B fiddled with his fingers in his lap, biting his lip. “It’s not me I’m worried about.”
POPE WALKED IN JUST AS YOU’D SLIPPED YOUR OTHER SHOE ON AND STOOD FROM THE SOFA, the boy stopping in his tracks.
“Where are you going?” He asked casually, resuming his slow steps plopping himself down on the sofa.
“Hopefully to get my dog back.” You said, patting your pockets to make sure you had everything. With the announcement of Rafe's arrest, you figured it was as good a time as any.
“...And you were just going to leave without telling anyone?” He asked, sitting up straighter, becoming increasingly more concerned. “I don’t think that’s a good idea. I don’t think JJ would agree with it either-”
“What does he have to do with anything?” You cut him off, your eyebrows set into a straight line.
“C’mon,” Pope sassed, standing from the couch. “It’s literally so obvious. It’s been obvious.” He said cooly. “Like, everyone knew he liked you before but now it’s clear you two have something going on. And you know how he is. He cares about you. A lot. You don’t wanna make him worry, do you?”
You wanted to tell him so badly. You felt like he needed to know why JJ wasn’t a priority right now. But you knew doing it would break Pope’s heart. Pope was in love with Kiara. And he deserved to know the truth, but you telling him out of spite wasn’t the best way to go through it.
“...Look, Pope.” You sighed, letting your shoulders fall. “Me and JJ aren’t on the best terms right now and I don’t want to be around him and I definitely don’t want his help. I know what I’m doing.” You assured, looking the boy in his eyes. “Okay? I’ll be fine, I promise.”
He seemed to sway on his feet, fighting with what to do in his head. “At least let me come with you. You can’t go alone-”
You immediately shook your head, putting your hands in front of you. “No, no. I don’t want you anywhere near Barry or Rafe without at least an army behind you.”
“But what about you?”
“...I’ve dealt with them before.” You affirmed, tensing your jaw.
Pope sighed in defeat, running a hand down his face. “Well, Rafe’s in jail but I doubt he’ll be in there long before he’s bailed out so you should be up against just Barry.” He pondered, turning to you and squinting his eyes. “...Fine. But if I call or text and I don’t get an answer, I’m telling JJ and everyone else. Deal?” He held out his hand.
The amount of care Pope had for your safety was sweet. So sweet it put a small, sheepish smile on your face. Connecting your hand with his, you shook it. “Deal.”
YOU SLOWED IN YOUR STEPS SOME FEET AWAY FROM THE SECLUDED TRAILER, wanting to minimize the chances of Barry seeing or hearing you before you even got to the door. The closer you got, the worse it smelled. You’d almost forgotten how the stench of weed and bonfire smoke stung your nostrils. Or how the overgrown grass scratched at your exposed legs, irritating the skin.
Your eyes immediately spotted a singular, metallic dog bowl — the inside smeared with what looked like canned meat. You felt sorrow and relief all at once. On the bright side, at least Marley was here. Or here at some point.
“Lookin’ for that mutt?” A familiar raspy voice sounded out. You whipped your head to the side to find Barry standing the doorway of his trailer. He startled you for a moment but the fear quickly diminished. After all, Barry rarely ever left the comfort of his trailer. He was dressed in a dirty wifebeater and shorts, his signature smirk plastered on his face.
“Where is she?” You asked, a hard expression on your face.
He simply drew his lips into a thin line, his eyebrows raising as he shrugged carelessly. “I ain’t got a damn clue.” He chuckled, shifting his weight against the frame and licking his lips. “Why don’t you ask Country Club?”
You rolled your eyes and crossed your arms. “He’s in a cell. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be here. Not alone, anyway.” You explained. “What, you don’t watch the news or something? Figured you’d keep tabs on your partner in crime.”
Barry just stood there smiling. Smiling weirdly. It made your stomach turn. You were never scared of Barry but he never failed to give you the creeps. “Trust me, I keep tabs.” He chuckled, strutting down the small staircase that led up to the door of his trailer. “You shoulda kept your ass away from here, Snoozie.” He told you, waving a finger in your direction, a mischievous expression on his face.
“...What is that supposed to mean?” You asked, pinching your eyebrows together.
“It means…whatever happens now is on you.” He smiled when suddenly, you felt two hands wrap around you and pull you into a body. One arm was on your neck, right under your chin as the other held your torso against the assailants. You could hear breathing in your ear — somewhere between heaving and chuckling as your body froze before trying to fight the person off to no avail.
“Hey, calm down,” You knew that voice.
It was the voice of someone who wasn’t supposed to be here.
“...Get off of me.” You warned, but it came out as more of a weak whisper.
You didn’t think you were afraid of Rafe anymore. But the feeling of his hands on your body, the force he was using to hold you in place, his warm breath against your neck — it all made you feel disgusting.
It made you feel like you were in the back of his truck all over again.
“Yeahhh…I can’t do that.” He laughed, walking you closer to Barry, his grip never loosening. “We’ll let you and your annoying ass dog go but, see, you walked into our domain? Alright, so…that means, we get to have our fun with you, first.” He whispered into your ear.
You watched helplessly as Barry pulled a plastic bag filled with a white, powdery substance from his pocket — scooping a decent amount onto the tip of his pinky before walking closer to you. "This for you and your friends stealin' my fuckin' money."
You began to dry heave, frantically shaking your head from side to side as he lifted the drugs to your nose. You jerked and jumped in Rafe’s hold, trying to do anything to get him to either let you go and disable Barry from drugging you.
“Hold her head still, Rafe.”
“Alright…” The Cameron boy groaned, carefully maneuvering the arm on your neck so that he quickly grasp your jaw, the strong hold causing an immediate ache as he held your head in place.
“There we go…” Barry drawled on, shoving his pinky so far up your nose that it hurt, triggering you to cough vehemently but ultimately sniff the substance. “Aight, she should be out soon. Take her inside, my neighbors are nosy as shit...”
Rafe released your jaw as you coughed. Your whole chest hurt and your nostrils stung and tingled, the sensation traveling from the bridge of your nose and to your brain — the feeling somewhere in between a migraine and a brain freeze. When your coughing died down, your head began to feel light. As light as a feather on your shoulders.
Their voices became inaudible in your ears, fading in and out. You tried to fight Rafe once more but you couldn’t feel your arms, or your legs for that matter.
The last thing you remember before the trees turned to blobs was Rafe carrying your body inside the trailer.
WHEN YOU OPENED YOUR EYES AGAIN, you didn’t know how much time had gone by. Minutes, hours…
Everything felt so heavy. Your eyelids were half close as that was as high as you could hold them. Your head rolled on your shoulders, gently swaying from side to side because holding it straight didn’t seem to be in your list of capabilities at the moment. Your lips felt permanently parted, not enough muscle strength to push them together and keep them there.
Looking around slowly, everything had a trail behind it. Everytime you turned, the object in your vision would leave behind a trail, like smeared paint. You didn't even know where you were, in all honesty. The kitchen? You looked up, letting your eyes settle before you realized what you were looking at — your hands. They were tied to a pole. A rack, of sorts.
You couldn’t even feel it. You tugged and tugged, at least you thought you were. But it didn’t look like your hands were moving.
“You awake now?” A voice echoed in your ears. You lowered your gaze to a find a figure in front of you.
Rafe, you concluded once your vision settled.
You swallowed and you could feel that, a little bit too much. It felt like you were swallowing rocks. What did Barry give you? “...Can you untie me?” You spoke.
“I’m sorry,” Rafe said, his voice sounding weird in your ears. He crouched down in front of you, his eyes boring into yours. He looked so much scarier. “...What was that? You’re mumbling, sunshine.”
You swallowed again, the action causing you to blink harshly - the smear of colors hurting you vision when you opened your eyes again. “...Can you untie me?” You mumbled once more, but you didn’t know you were mumbling. In your ears, you could hear your voice so clear. It was so loud and it echoed, like yelling down an empty hall — every sounded bounced off the walls.
Rafe just stared at you. It looked like he was thinking before he shrugged lightly, shifting closer to you and reaching above your head where your hands were bound. “You’re too weak to go anywhere anyway…can’t do anything…might as well.”
You felt your arms float to the floor as Rafe held the rope in his hands, examining it before tossing it to the side. His gaze returned to you, analyzing your face as if he’d never seen it before. His blue scanned over you in your entirety, drinking you in with his eyes. It felt like he was staring straight into your soul, taking every part of it for himself. He was your focal point, everything else behind him fading into a mess of colors.
Even in your altered state of consciousness, your body still found the strength to flinch when his hand reached out to touch your face, his fingers leaving a fiery trail in their wake. “...You are the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.” He whispered, his voice sounding ghostly in your ears. “I just want you to let me love you. And you won’t…” His words made you ill. So ill that you were sure that your stomach audibly turned. “I never…meant to hurt you. But you just made it so hard.”
You could see the tears welling in his eyes and the redness blooming on his nose. He was…crying. Or trying not to. You couldn’t clearly tell. “And then you told everyone that I..raped you.” He choked out, threading his fingers through your hair as you tried to move away from his touch, the sound of his digits scraping against your roots making your body recoil. “We both wanted it. You were just too ashamed to admit it. You thought it was wrong, that we were wrong. You were fighting me, I'll admit…but you wanted it.”
You shook your head, bile rising in your throat. “...Didn’t.” You choked out, throwing your head back against the wall. “I didn’t…want it.” You breathed. “And I…don’t…love you.” You struggled to form fluent sentences, your words slurring in on each other even with the long pauses in between nearly each word. “You and your family…took everything f-...from me.” Talking was as hard as hiking up the steepest hill in the world. “I just want my dog back. Can’t you j-...just give her to me?”
“Jesus- forget the fucking dog!” Rafe screamed, kicking a nearby object. You couldn’t see what it was. His hands gripped his hair at the roots, the boy pacing back and forth in front of you before crouching down in front of you once more, closer this time. “This is about us — me and you. I am in love with you. So, why is it…that you can’t love me back? You led me on. You made me like this-”
“No, I didn’t.” You cried, head thrown back as you looked up at the ceiling, tears running from your eyes, the droplets tickling your cheeks. “You made…me like this.” You said tearfully, a cough following the statement. “I was fifteen. I didn’t know…any better. But you did.” You wailed, lowering your head to look at him, although your head still swayed. “And when I did…know better, you didn’t w-want to let me go. And it doesn’t even matter…” You almost laughed through your tears. “Because your dad…ruined my life months before we even met.”
Rafe was quick to wrap his hand around your neck after that, squeezing harshly. He edged his face closer to yours, the tips of his hair tickling your forehead as stars invaded your vision, or what remained of it. “My dad? Did what he had to do. Alright? He’s not a monster.”
“...Neither was mine.” You croaked out. Rafe looked between your eyes with an expression you couldn’t place. Sadness? Anger? Whatever it was, he felt enough of it to release his grip, you taking the biggest gulp of air possible, your hair falling in front of your face as you held it down weakly.
He stood up from his crouching position in front of you. You heard him pace around once more as you caught your breath, each intake feeling like you were breathing in the coldest air ever, before you cried out in pain, the sound hurting your ears. Rafe had grabbed a fistful of your hair, using it to pull you up, but you could barely stand so the angry boy used his other hand to grip your upper arm for support. Using the hold he had on you, he drug your limp frame into the small living area, throwing you onto Barry’s tattered sofa.
…Where was Barry?
You landed on your side, rolling over onto your back. The whole room was spinning again, the quickness of his actions not allowing your brain to catch up with the swift movements. “I try to do the right thing and no one ever cares. My dad and Sarah, even Rose…they blame me for everything.” He ranted and rambled, his hands balled into fists by his sides as he looked down at you. “I thought you were different.” He said through labored breaths. Him standing above you, face red and furious, you would've sworn he was the devil himself. “But you’re just as bad as the rest of them. But I can change that…” He nodded, climbing on top of you, straddling your motionless body.
All you could do was look at him through the strands of hair that cloud your vision. You let out a ‘hmph’ as he let his weight rest on your thighs. “I can’t change their minds. I can’t fix them.” He said, his hands trailing the hem of your bottoms before unbuttoning them. “...But I can fix you.” He breathed, his tongue peeking out from between his lips as he nodded to himself. “I can make you love me.”
Before you knew it, the sound of him dragging the zipper of your fly rang out in your ears - the familiar situation triggering a series of images to flash in your mind. Images of the first time. You felt the puddles of hot tears leaving your eyes as your throat ached to say something. “Please, stop…” You cried, throwing your head side to side as your weak hands tried to push his away. “Please, don’t do this again.” You stuttered, your nimble fingers clawing at his knuckles as he struggled to drag your bottoms down your legs.
You felt like God himself came down from Heaven when a harsh light filled the trailer, the door of the mobile home opening as Barry entered, taking in the scene in front of him. You quickly registered that it was actually moonlight blinding you so viciously, the brightness fading behind Barry’s figure to reveal the eerie darkness outside.
How long had you been here?
“Aye, what the fuck? Rafe!” Barry said disgusted, slamming the door shut behind him. “Get the fuck off her, man. Don’t do that shit in my crib.” He told him, throwing a hand out in his direction. Rafe sighed, getting off of you and aggressively dragging your pants back up your legs, but he didn’t bother to button them back. You laid on the couch, sobbing silently. You didn’t know if it was out of fear or relief. “That’s why yo ass put me on paw patrol? So you could fuck the doped up girl in my damn house?”
Rafe made a face of annoyance, rolling his eyes at the drug dealer’s words. “Did you do it?”
“Uh, yeah, I did it, dumbass.” Barry said, voice full of attitude. “I just let her go in the backyard, it sounded like they were all inside. I saw one of the dudes come out and take her inside before I dipped.” He explained, grabbing a half-drunken beer from his cluttered coffee table. “Why you have me take the dog back if she still here? Y’know they gon come lookin’ for her eventually…” He threw out, the rim of the beer bottle touching his lips before he took a big sip.
“Just had to leave a little hint behind.” Rafe told Barry, sitting on the couch next to your feet as you turned to your side, groaning. He made a line out of the loose coke on the coffee table before quickly snorting it. A large exhale leaving his lungs as he let it pass through him. “It’s fun to fuck with ‘em, dude.”
“I ain’t with these games and shit.” Barry complained, walking to the back of his trailer. You were still laid out on the couch, sobbing silently. “If they come by here and fuck up my shit, it’s comin’ outta your pocket, Country Club.” He said. “And give her another hit!” He called from the back. “All that cryin’ and shit is givin’ me a headache. Damn…”
Rafe rolled his eyes and mumbled under his breath before searching around the table before picking up the plastic bag Barry had before. You figured whatever they were putting you out with wasn’t cocaine. And that’s what scared you the most when Rafe snatched you up and shoved another pinky-full up your nose, letting your drowsy frame fall back into the plushness of the sofa.
“JJ…BACK IN THE VAN!” What sounded like John B’s voice filled your ears. Your eyes cracked open little by little, your vision much more clear and less distorted than the last time you recall waking up. So many voices were speaking at once. Your eyes wandered, trying to find out who was talking to who. It was then you realized the entire world was sideways and you were inside of The Twinkie.
Your head was slightly more elevated than the rest of your body, causing you to turn and peer above you where you found Sarah’s wide eyes staring down at you, finally registering the feeling on her fingers running through your hair. Her eyes were slightly red and glossed over as she peered down at you.
You felt more conscious this time around — no paint smears, no muffled voices, and you felt like you had more control over your body. You were cold, so cold. Probably shivering.
Looking over, you found that the door of the van was open. You could see a group of people crowded in on each other. When your vision focused, you realized it your four other friends and they were surrounding Rafe and Barry.
“What is wrong with you?!” That was Kie’s voice. And you knew her well enough to hear the anger in voice. “What the hell do you want, huh? You should be in jail, you sick motherfucker!” It wasn’t long before the guys pushed her to the back of the circle, the girl yelling at Rafe through the blockade they’d formed in front of her.
“You Kooks think you can do whatever the fuck you want!” JJ shouted, his voice deeper than you’d ever heard it before. It was almost unrecognizable. “You wanna end up like your father? ‘Cause we can make it happen!-”
“The fuck’d you just say to me, you little shit?” Rafe countered, stepping closer to JJ as John B and Pope stepped closer to him.
“You heard me, bitch.” JJ spat, the small accent he had showing itself as he pushed his way through his two friends to stand toe-to-toe with Rafe.
“All y’all needa get the fuck off my property.” Barry added, standing beside Rafe, but his words went ignored.
“If you wanna do this, we can do it. ‘Cause I’ve been waiting to get my fuckin’ hands on you.” JJ warned. “You like to drug girls? Rape them? Hit them? Hit me. Hit me, you pussy-” Just then, Rafe clocked JJ in his jaw, the force and sound of the assault causing you to flinch in Sarah’s lap as John B and Pope caught their friend, Kie gasping behind them. You tried to sit up as you watched JJ’s head whip to the side, but Sarah was quick to force your weak frame back down.
You looked up at her with wide, glassy eyes. “Rafe’s gonna hurt him.” You said weakly, sounding like a scared child.
The blonde girl simply shook her head side to side. “I don’t think so.” She smiled weakly before looking back out at the brawl unfolding outside of the vehicle. “Not this time.”
Your own eyes refocused on the two guys just as JJ recovered from the blow, wasting no time in lunging at Rafe and sending the boy to the ground, allowing himself to deliver blow after blow. You couldn’t tell if he was landing them, you could only see one arm go up after the other, his fists coming down in a vicious frenzy.
Kiara was calling JJ’s name as Barry shook his head and backed up,n John B and Pope watching with their hands up. “Y’all gon’ have the cops pokin’ around here...” Barry said angrily, eyes on John B and Pope who stood by helplessly, shocked. “Get this shit under control, I don’t need them people on my radar!” The drug dealer urged, the commotion sure to disturb any nearby trailer owners.
John B and Pope looked at each other before John B peered back at you, an expression of sadness in his eyes.
Oh. You forgot…he didn’t know.
So, it wasn’t long before that sadness turned to anger as he turned back to Barry. “...We’ll leave when he’s done.” John B spat, referring to the two boys brawling in the grass before walking away and rounding the vehicle to get in the driver’s seat, Pope and Kie following and climbing into the back of the van quickly. Without those three blocking your field of view, you could clearly see the two boys now.
Rafe had managed to pick himself up but surprisingly, JJ still had the upper hand. But it was still a brutal brawl between the two, one not staying on top for long before being pinned by the other. Every few seconds, you could spot droplets of blood flying. It was an odd thing — on one hand, seeing Rafe get his ass handed to him almost put a dizzy smile on your face, but on the other hand, you knew he’d never stop coming after JJ now. Any chance he got...
Especially since now he probably got the hint that JJ had some sort of feelings for you. JJ didn’t come after him like a concerned friend, JJ lunged at him like a enraged boyfriend. JJ attacked him like someone who was in love with you. And after what Rafe said in the trailer, or at least what you remember of it, these two would be butting heads over a lot more than financial status.
When the blaring of sirens hit your ears, you perked up, as well as everyone else. But Rafe and JJ were too enthralled with trying to kill each other that they must not have heard anything.
The pogues began calling JJ’s name, trying to draw him out of his rage-induced assault to get back in the van. After a few moments, he finally registered their voices and the sound of the sirens. He forcefully pulled himself away from Rafe as the boy laid on the grass, heaving. JJ delivered one last glare to the boy on the ground, the blonde’s chest going up and down heavily as he turned and threw himself into the van.
“And don’t come ‘round here no more, you hear me?!” Barry’s voice traveled before Pope slammed the door shut, John B speeding off.
Your eyes were trained on JJ’s breathing figure — he had a small trail of blood going from his bottom lip to his chin, dirt on his shirt and in his hair, and his eyebrows were set into a permanent frown. You managed to meet his eyes for a second and he looked upset.
Upset with you?
KIARA AND SARAH HELPED YOU INSIDE THE CHATEAU AS THE GUYS HELD THE DOORS OPEN. What you didn’t expect was for Marley to come charging at you the second you stepped foot in the house. The girls let you go gently, allowing you to crouch down on your knees and embrace your dog.
She smelled like wet dirt and you could feel the outline of her ribcage as you rubbed her sides. Tears gathered in your eyes as you and Marley comforted each other. Your voice was still weak and scratchy as you spoke softly to the animal. If anything, after today, you should be grateful she was still alive.
“Hey,” John B spoke up, your eyes going to him. “We can hose her down in the backyard while you wash off.”
You drew your lips into a thin line, nodding your head in his direction as you stood up on shaky legs, Kie and Sarah putting a hand each on your back. He and Pope led Marley outside, JJ lagging behind. “JJ.” You called out. The blonde simply looked at you over his shoulder, chewing the inside of his lip before making his way outside with the other two guys.
Your shoulders fell at his cold demeanor. You guessed he was upset with you.
“It’s okay…” Sarah reassured, her hand rubbing your back as you frowned into the distance. “He just needs a second.” She told you, turning you in the direction of the bathroom, helping you walk alongside Kie who hadn't said much. “C’mon. We’ll help you get yourself together…”
WHEN YOU CAME OUT OF THE BATHROOM, the house was empty. The only living things inside being a sleeping Marley and you. She looked a lot cleaner, aside from the food remnants around her mouth. You smiled smally to yourself, admiring the animal for a moments before walking over to her, crouching down and placing a light kiss on the top of her head. She was so deep asleep that she didn’t stir, even a little.
You almost passed out a handful of times in the shower, the steam only contributing to the lightheadedness you felt but easing the neverending ache in your arms and legs. But you felt better — less disoriented. Less…gross.
You were dressed in one of JJ’s few sweatshirts and a pair of pajama shorts. All the time the two of you’d spent living together meant some of your clothes were still mixed in with one another’s. Your hair was slightly damp, the strands pulled back into a low bun to keep it out of your face.
Even though you felt more sober, you still felt like you were walking outside of your body and it was making you a bit nauseous. You spotted a bottle of aspirin on the kitchen counter, snatching it up and swallowing two pills.
Just then, you heard voices outside — low and faint, but there. You peered out of the small window in the kitchen , spotting John B and Pope laid out on the HMS Pogue. Everyone must’ve gone outside, you thought to yourself.
You slipped out the backdoor, bare feet on the grass as you walked in the direction of the two guys.
“What’re you two talking about?” Your voice was still off and scratchy but you were grateful that you could hear yourself talking. The two males turned to you, making out your figure in the dark of night as you squeezed into between them on the boat.
“How’re you feeling?” Pope was the first to ask, genuine concern swimming in his eyes.
You sent him a small smile. “Better.” You nodded. “...And I’m sorry. For putting you in a weird position, before I left. I shouldn’t have done that-”
“You don’t have to apologize.” He shook his head, patting your shoulder. “I’m just glad you’re okay.”
You mumbled a ‘thanks’ to the boy, patting the hand on your shoulder as he slid it off as you turned to John B who was already looking at you. You knew him the best out of all your friends. That’s why you could tell he was going from upset with you to sad all at once.
“Just say it.” You sighed, giving him the floor.
“...Why didn’t you tell me?” He asked, squinting his eyes. “You’re like my sister. And not to sound weird but I love you, dude. I would’ve killed Rafe-”
“That’s why.” You cut him off, a pitiful frown on your face. “I didn’t need you doing anything stupid in my defense. And you were still torn up over your dad. We both were.”
He just huffed, turning away from you and shaking his head side to side as he crossed his arms. “...You still should’ve told me.”
“I know.” You nodded, sighing and sliding down to lay fully down next to your two friends. “Where is everyone?”
“Well, Kiara is out front doing…whatever. JJ has been pacing in the Surf Shack for like an hour, and Sarah...left.” He hesitated at the end of his statement, eyeing John B who just sighed deeply. You looked between them both, eyes stopping on John B.
“What happened?” You asked.
“We, uh…we broke up.”
“What?” You asked, shocked. “Why?”
“...She wasn’t the biggest fan of how I react to Ward blowing himself up.” He explained, shifting in his spot. “She said I looked glad. And I didn’t want to lie to her and say I wasn’t. Because I was.”
“I mean, I get it.” You threw out, looking up at the stars in the sky. “He killed your dad. He killed a lot of people…I think it’s okay to be glad he’s dead. But I also get her side. He was her dad. But she can’t expect you to feel the same.”
“Exactly what I said.” Pope chipped in. “How sad can you expect someone to be when their father’s murderer dies and they get to see it?”
“I don’t think it was that, though.” John B spoke up, his brows pinched. “She said that out of all people, she thought that I’d understand what it’s like to lose a dad. And I do and I feel like a dick for not comforting her in that moment and giving Topper the opportunity to swoop in but…I feel like she didn’t even give me a chance to be there for her.”
“...Love is five minutes of pleasure for a lifetime of pain.” Pope said sadly, you and John B turning to him silently with wide eyes. The boy turned to the both of you, the same expression plastered on his face.
“Okay…” John B groaned, sitting up from his position and leaning on his arm.. “You and Kie, talk to me. What’s goin’ on?”
“Well…” Pope said, sitting up as well as you just looked up at the two guys. “She wants to be just friends.”
John B and you sighed simultaneously. “Whooo, death blow.” JB said to him. “Sorry, man.”
“It’s not like I can say I didn’t see it coming. After what happened in Charleston…” Pope was explaining before he cut himself off, his wide eyes darting to you as he pressed his lips shut. But John B’s curiosity was peaked, and so was yours.
“What happened in Charleston?” The brunette boy asked, looking between the two of you.
Pope’s mouth opened and closed like a fish gasping for air. You cocked an eyebrow, sitting up on your own elbow now. “So you did see it?”
Now he was the one looking confused, using his finger to point at you. “You saw it? I thought you were inside-”
“I was but I had just walked out when I saw them.”
“So, we both saw it?”
“Helloooo.” John B butted in, the two of you looking at him. “Third party is still here. Saw what?”
“The kiss.” You and Pope said at the same time, looking at him.
“Kiss? What kiss? Who kissed?” He asked, genuinely baffled.
“Kie and JJ.” The both of you said in sync again.
John B’s jaw dropped as he stuttered to find words. “Is that why you’ve been avoiding JJ?” He settled on his question, eyes on you.
“Yes…” You said squinting your eyes. “What would you know about that, though?” You asked, wondering when JB got the inside scoop on you and JJ’s newfound relationship.
“I mean, everyone could see he had a thing for you. For a looong time. Well, everyone but you…”
“Thank you.” Pope butted in, throwing his hands up in surrender when you shot him a glare. “I’m just saying, I wasn’t the only one who saw it.”
“And he kind of told me everything that happened while me and Sarah were gone.” John B smirked as you groaned. “But we’re getting off topic…” He waved his hands, dismissing the previous statements.
“Right.” Pope refocused. “I never said anything about the kiss to her or him. I just kind of hoped it was a spur of the moment thing and that it would just remain as that — a kiss. But then, she friendzoned me. And now I can’t help but think that she likes JJ. And I don’t know if JJ likes her, no offense Y/N...”
“He told me he doesn’t.” You butted in. “The day we got that call about what happened to your pops, we had an argument about it. He said that Kie initiated the kiss and it didn’t mean anything. To him, at least. I don’t know how much of it I believe but," You cut yourself off, shrugging. "And I can’t speak for Kiara…”
“Okay, here’s some not-so-friendly advice for the both of you from good ole Dr. Routledge,” John B piped up, a bright smile on his face. “You,” He pointed a Pope. “focus on your yourself and your books and…grades and shit. Forget about Kie, there’s plenty of fish in the sea. And you, Pope, are one handsome young man and I guarantee there is some girl out there willing to jump your bones and not kiss one of your best friends. And, you, little missy,” His attention turned to you. “If JJ says he doesn’t have feelings for her and the kiss didn’t mean anything, I’d believe him. He loves you and I don’t think he would do anything to purposefully screw up his chance with you. And please, for the love of God, be nice and talk to him. Hearing him whine about you not talking to him is going to drive me off a cliff.”
The three of you laughed before you turned to Pope, a light smile on your face. “So, you really just weren’t going to tell me?” You asked in faux-offense.
Pope faked shock, a hand on his chest. “Uh, me? I didn’t even know you and JJ had something going then. If anything, you should’ve been the one to tell me.”
“I didn’t want to upset you!” You laughed and groaned all at once.
“Yeah, yeah…” He waved you off lightheartedly. “Alright, next time we see something that would…affect the other person, we have to tell. Deal?” He asked, holding out his pinky.
“Ohhh, okay. We’ll be each others witnesses. I like this two person witness protection program.” You smiled, connecting your pinky with Pope’s. “Deal.”
YOU WERE IN THE GUEST ROOM WHEN THE DOOR CREAKED OPEN, a stream of light illuminating the dimly lit space — the only source of light being a bedside lamp. You thought everyone had gone to sleep.
Turning at the sound of the door, you found JJ closing the entryway behind him before he turned to you. You could hardly see his features, not enough light to see his face clearly. Neither of you said anything as he walked slowly towards you, walking around the bed.
He stopped in front of you, just inches between the both of you. Nothing was to be heard except your breathing and the cicadas outside.
“...What’s wrong with you?” He asked. His voice sounded strained, like he’d been crying. “What the hell is wrong with you?”
You nodded, accepting his frustration towards you. Swallowing, you attempted to reply. “...I didn’t think-”
“Yeah, you didn’t think.” JJ cut you off. “You left without telling anyone. You went there alone. Why would you do that?”
“He wasn’t supposed to be there-”
“Anything could’ve happened to you. Anything.” JJ reprimanded, shifting closer to you subconsciously. “Do you know what is was like to hear, from Pope, that’d you left to go to Barry’s trailer hours ago? That you hadn’t answered any of his calls or texts that you said you’d answer? To ride all the way there with my heart beating out of my damn chest just to rush in and find you passed out on the couch with the your pants unbuttoned, confirming every single fear-”
“Nothing happened-”
“But something could have!” He lost himself, looking around as if someone heard as he licked his lips, one tear rolling down his cheek. “He tried to, clearly, and something could have.” He sighed, letting himself sit on the edge of the guest room bed, his head in his hands. “...You didn’t even know who I was when we woke you up the first time to put you in the van. You didn’t recognize any of us. You were completely out of it. I've never seen anyone like that...” He told you. You don’t recall waking up more than twice. Voices and colors here and there but…not much. “I know…that you think I took your trust and feelings and ran with them. But you can’t do things like that.” He said firmly, lifting his head to look at you. “I’m not blaming you. I just want you to understand that even if you’re mad at me or whoever, you can’t just abandon ship. Especially, not like that.”
He told you, reaching his hands out to grab your waist and pull you closer as you sniffled. You felt almost completely sober as you stood between his legs, the aspirin you took earlier taking effect.
“Are you okay?” He asked, his teary blue eyes boring into yours as he looked up at you. You bit your lip from the inside of your mouth as you nodded. “Okay…good.” He sighed, letting his head fall in relief before looking at you again. “I know the last few days have been…hard. Especially today. And I’m sorry that I put you in a place where you couldn’t even trust me as a friend anymore. But I don’t know how else to tell you or show you that I love you. And today just made me realize how badly I need you and how far I’m willing to go for you.” He said softly. “...There were so many reasons I didn’t tell you about the kiss. For one, it didn’t mean anything to me. Also the fact that I didn’t want to cause drama between you and Kie. But none of that matters because there was only one reason that I should’ve told you — because you deserved to know and because I promised I would. So, I am really sorry.”
You'd never heard JJ be this vulnerable and open. Or be so vulnerable and open this easily. It didn't seem practiced or rehearsed. It was like he was really letting his heart speak for him and right all his wrongs.
After what happened today, holding a grudge wasn't as appealing. Because you didn't know what could happen tomorrow.
“...I believe you. And I forgive you.” You said, eyes locked on his. “And I’m sorry, too. If I had told you guys where I was going then maybe-”
“Don’t even go there.” He stopped you, shaking his head. “Rafe is insane. What he and that fucking loser, Barry, did wasn’t your fault. You shouldn’t have gone there alone, sure, but what happened wasn’t your fault.”
You just sent him a half-hearted smile. You know he meant it but you still felt at least partially to blame. You licked your lips and took a deep breath before speaking, your hands rubbing up and down the blonde’s exposed arms. “JJ…” You spoke, more like whispered.
Something in the way you looked at him changed. Something in the way you felt for him changed. “...I want you.” You felt the boy tense in your arms, lifting his head up more to look you directly in the eyes. “I don’t need any more time. I know what I want and I know how I feel. I love you. And I want you.”
“...Are you sure? Because you just went through something really terrible tonight-”
“I’m sure.” You interrupted him. “If I keep waiting until nothing bad happens to be with you, then we’ll never be together. This is our lives now. And even if we didn’t have all this death and drama around us, I would still love you.” You reassured, trailing your hands up to his shoulders as his soothed themselves up and down your waist. “You said you were all mine. So, now I’m all yours, if you want me…”
He had a look on his face that you couldn’t decipher. His eyes looked at each of yours and then landed on your lips, seeming to trace them before pulling you down into him and colliding his lips with yours. A small noise of surprise leaving your lips before you melted into the exchange. Your hands slid around the nape of his neck as his trailed the length of your thighs, helping you onto his lap.
His fingers pressed into your skin, passionately dragging his prints into your skin as your nails scraped at the skin of his scalp and shoulders. The kiss wasn’t like the ones before. Those were soft and gentle, testing the waters. This kiss was hungry and prolonged — feverish. So starved of each other that it probably would’ve had the potential to lead to something else if the day had gone differently.
But knowing JJ, after what happened tonight, any kind of sex was off the table. Ad you weren't sure when you'd be ready to go that far. But this was good enough. More than good enough. There wasn’t a single part of either of you that wasn’t touching. You couldn’t help but sigh when his warm hand went up under your shirt, his fingers clawing at your back as he pressed you endlessly closer against him.
You were confused when he pulled back — lips swollen and red as his hair stuck up in one-hundred different directions. He was breathing heavy when he spoke. “Sorry, sorry…” He said through labored breaths. “Just to be clear, you are my girlfriend, right-”
You couldn’t help but laugh and roll your eyes. “Yes, JJ, I’m your girlfriend.” You smiled. “I’m completely yours.” You sighed, eyeing his lips like an animal before connecting your lips with his once more, the both of you falling back into the mattress.

okay so i'm going through ER and just rewatching some iconic Mark x Susan moments.. but in Union Station, Susan knew that Mark was going to go to her apartment and left him a note instead of saying goodbye. Which is eerily similar to the fact that Mark left Susan in S8 without saying goodbye, and left her a few sentences in his letter that were obviously written for her.
These two loved each other so much that they, canonically, on multiple occasions, did not and could not say goodbye to each other.

Recently started Transgender History by Susan Stryker, and was pleasantly surprised to see intersex be given about a page and a half of text in the Contexts, Concepts, and Terms section of the book. There are some parts of it which I think are good, some "good enough", and some which I feel miss the mark a bit. Overall, I think Susan Stryker did a pretty decent job here and I'm happy to see intersex included, though I do think there's room for improvement and criticism.
A note I'd like to make here is that this book was originally published in 2008 and revised in 2017, and I'm unsure how much this section in particular was revised since the original publish date - If anyone can find that out I'd be very interested to hear about it!
I'm going to be copying the text from the book here and giving my thoughts on it.
Intersex: Typically, being an egg-producing body means having two X chromosomes, and being a sperm-producing body means having one X and one Y chromosome. When egg and sperm cells fuse (i.e., when sexual reproduction takes place), their chromosomes can combine in patterns (or "karyotypes") other than the typical male (XY) or female (XX) ones (such as XXY or XO). Other genetic anomalies can also cause the sex of the body to develop in atypical ways. Other differences of sex development might take place during pregnancy or after birth as the result of glandular conditions that contribute further differences in the typical development of biological sex. Some of these anomalies cause a body that is genetically XY (typically male) to look typically female at birth. Some bodies are born with genitals that look like a mixture of typically male and typically female shapes. Some genetically female bodies (typically XX) are born without vaginas, wombs, or ovaries. All of these variations on the most typical organization of human reproductive anatomy -- along with many, many more -- are called intersex conditions.
Starting off with examples of intersex variations rather than giving a definition first followed by examples left it hard for me to follow exactly where Stryker was going with it, but that could be a writing style preference; personally I think I would've been a bit lost if I didn't already know what intersex was. Overall I think this starts off pretty solid, gives a good overview of the massive spectrum of sex we're dealing with when we talk about intersex - it doesn't fall into the same "mix of male and female, ambiguous genitals" trap that many other definitions do which I appreciate. The use of typical/atypical (instead of, say, disordered) is good. I also do appreciate the preference for differences of sex development over disorders of sex development.
Intersex used to be called hermaphroditism, but that term is now usually considered perjorative. Some intersex people now prefer the medical term DSD (for Disorders of Sex Development) to describe their sex status, but others reject this term as unduly pathologizing and depoliticizing. Such people might use DSD to refer instead to "differences of sex development," or they might hold on to the word intersex -- or even hermaphrodite, or the slang word herm -- to signal their sense of belonging to a politicized minority community.
This is also good! Really feel like we're addressing the elephants in the room here. Hermaphrodite is perjorative, some intersex people use Disorders of Sex Development but other intersex people consider it unduly pathologizing and depoliticizing and instead use differences of sex development or just intersex (or reclaim Hermaphrodite), and we belong to a politicized minority community. Very cool! Lots of things were said here that other authors are often too afraid to touch on, if they even mention us at all.
Intersex conditions are far more common than we tend to acknowledge; reliable estimates put the number at about one in two thousand births.
Actually, it's more like 1-2 in 100 births, my guess as to what's being referenced is actually the statistics for those born with ambiguous genitals ("The estimated frequency of genital ambiguity is reported to be in the range of 1:2000–1:4500" [Link]), which is disappointing. I do appreciate Stryker going against the "intersex is rare" myth, though.
Intersex doesn't really have all that much to do with transgender, except for demonstrating that the biology of sex is a lot more variable than most people realize. This becomes significant when you have cultural beliefs about there being only two sexes, and therefore only two genders.
Stryker lost me here. Intersex doesn't have much to do with transgender except as a demonstration of the variability of sex? I'm tired of people saying intersexuality's only relation to transgender is this when there are many more connections to be found between the two. It's exhausting to have your community be constantly stripped down to a singular point or a debate tool for someone else's use. Didn't like this part.
These beliefs can lead to intersex people becoming the target of medical interventions such as genital surgery or hormone therapy, often while they are still infants or young children, to "correct" their supposed "abnormality". It is being subjected to the same cultural beliefs about gender, and acted on by the same medical institutions, through the same body-altering techniques that give intersex people and transgender people the most common ground.
This part is better, and I do like the connection between intersex and trans people here. I do believe that acknowledging that both communities are impacted by much of the same systems and techniques is good and should be further talked about.
Some trans people who think that their need to cross gender boundaries has a biological cause consider themselves to have an intersex condition (current theories favor sex-linked differences in the brain), and some people with intersex bodies also come to think of themselves as being transgender (in that they desire to live in a gender different from the one they were assigned at or after birth).
I think that there is... quite a large difference between the two groups suggested here, in a way that makes the comparison uncomfortable. Additionally, I did also notice the difference in "trans people" vs. "people with intersex bodies"; it leaves me wondering why they were referred to differently, especially when "intersex people" was used further up in the passage. Perhaps it's to contrast with, for lack of better words, trans people who consider themselves to have differently-sexed brains which make them intersex?
Still, it's best to think of transgender and intersex identities, communities, and social change movements as being demographically and politically distinct, albeit with some areas of overlap and some shared membership.
Complicated thoughts here. Yes, there are differences in our movements and communities, and yes, we are distinct groups - this is important, especially when a lot of people still try to conflate intersex and trans as being the same. However, I think "some areas of overlap and some shared membership" is really underestimating things; While I believe it's pretty safe to say that most trans people do not identify as intersex or participate in intersex communities or advocate for intersex issues, the opposite doesn't appear to be true - a report from Trevor Project found that "58% of intersex youth identified as transgender or nonbinary or were questioning their gender identity". [Link] (PDF)
These are all my current thoughts, going back to reading the book now.

Most of the time you wouldn't say holding down a 9 to 5 at one of the biggest breakfast chains in middle America was an exciting career endeavour for a 22 year old woman but here you were. That was until you met him: your boyfriend of six months who'd shown himself to be a great lover and an even better giver, always draping you in the finest of mulberry silk and yellow diamond. You weren't shallow though, you would've loved him the same if all he had were the clothes on his back and that floppy hair of his.
However you wouldn't have to because he had the ultimate privilege or curse, many would go on to say, of being born into one of the richest families in America, and was the brother of the Democratic Party pick for president in 1960. Oh, and his name was Bobby Kennedy.
*Flashback to December 5th, 1959*
After working your job at Waffle house for about 2 weeks you knew it was hell, filled with grimy men hitting on you with their dirty pickup lines their dad probably taught them at age 15, that bitch of a co-worker, and a drab work attire that your boss, Susan, seemed to have affinity for catching any slight deviations of. Superficially it was mostly the outfit requirements that bothered you: I mean how were you ever supposed to leave this damned place if your own uniform made sure that no person, regardless of gender, would ever humanly find you attractive.
Despite this, you persevered and tried to work around it. If your boss told you to wear a plain blue top: you wore a lightly stripped blue button-up with featuring an embroidered, ruffled star motif on the chest. If your boss told you to wear heather grey bottoms: you wore an extremely short dark navy skort with built in shorts for the so called modesty striven for in the dress code. I mean for christ sakes this wasn't the White House now was it?
You often pared the dreary outfit with a pair of suede ballerina's in navy: a bit of an oxymoron where your mother was concerned due to the nearly perpetual state of wetness synonymous with Oregon lately. Adorning your neck with the one staple in your jewellery escapes: an antique scapular on black silk cord.
Slinging your bag over your shoulder defiantly: a bag so filled to the brim that it didn't look so much like a bag anymore and more like a rather large and rather worn sack. However you did attempt to beautify its exterior by applying randomised trinkets to it's complexion such as: a statement cross pendant held together with leather twine, a religious pocket book passed down from your grandmother on your Spanish side, and a stone rosary.
Departing from the trinkets adoring the handles of your bag, the once smooth leather of the bag was now covered in tiny hole marks from the pins of the buttons you so religiously adorned your bag with. Many—who were you kidding, all were of John F. Kennedy and his running mate Lyndon B. Johnson. Now you weren't so much of a fan of Johnson as you were of Kennedy but you were seldom able to find ones of Jack by himself. That's why the ones of jack stayed front and centre, with the ones of Johnson meandering in the background, wrapping around the sides of the leather.
It had been a couple hours of your shift before you granted yourself the masochistic reflex of checking the time: counting down the length of time until you were free.
Checking the clock you realise it had not in fact been hours, in reality it had only been an hour and three minutes. Boy time really just flies by when you're serving up cheesesteak melt has brown bowls at five-thirty in the morning: I mean seriously what kind of sicko does that?, and getting hit on by men who look like they could've been your father.
That was until you hear that disntict clink of the door chin: alerting you to a new customer. Exasperated with, well—life, you look up already annoyed. Annoyed until you meet the hilarious sight of a strange man crouched under a comically small umbrella, surrounding by some very self-important all dressed in suit and tie: a stark contrast to the typical male style expected of in Oregon.
Before you can catch a glimpse of the man he's herded into a booth far out of your range of sight. Despite being interested your attention is called for when a woman orders a hot coffee to-go. Y'know, it did always suck when you had to do your actual job and not just people watch for a living.
Out of nowhere two voices come within your earshot,
"No, Tim—I can do it myself. God damn it! You people treat me like a child, I can order my own food." a voice expressed that somehow towed that line between being intrinsically feminine and masculine at the same time.
The other voice begrudgingly backs off but continues,
"I know you're not a child Bob, but I'm trying to help you. Y'know that's kind of my job as advisor, to advise you on shit."
"Fine. You go do it, i'll wait over here like a dog." ,the voice says expressing a particular strain of annoyance you had yet to hear vocalised until that moment.
This man has an advisor? What the he—
"Hey-Uh, could I get a pecan waffle and a dark roast coffee."
Surprised for a moment, you compose yourself and reply "Sure, coming right up."
Shuffling into the back with the intention to tell the cook the order, and then maybe take a cheeky smoke from your bag in the meantime. Maybe.
After telling the cook, you find yourself b-lining for your bag. Getting to your bag, you start fiddling for a lighter that was until you hear a peculiar set of shuffling feet suspiciously close to you.
That's when you realise that you completely missed, on your mission for your bag, a real human man leaning his back against the bag rack.
"Oh-Mary and Joseph—you nearly gave me a heart attack."
The figure, and the face comes into your range of sight and your semi totally mortified. The president-to-be's brother had just seen you try to go for a smoke.
"Oh I'm sorry I just don't like the noises. Forks scraping on plates gives me the chills." the man chuckles.
In politeness you chuckle back, in order to get the elephant out of the room you say,
"Now you're Robert Kennedy aren't you?"
"In the flesh" he says with a quite sassy display of his hands, patting himself on the chest in an act to display his human quality.
"Well I have to say I'm enamoured by your brother's campaign, he's doing so wonderfully."
"Thank you, well I happen to think so too. But I'm a bit biased—y'know it's kind of in my job description. I pegged you for a jack supporter."
"How so?"
"Oh I don't know, maybe the pins on that bag of yours gave me a bit of a clue."
Mortified you look away that was, until, he redirects your head movements with his hand turning your chin back to his with the divine authority of a man much older than you. Though you're not repulsed by that fact, in all reality it's quite the opposite.
"Hey-Hey hey don't be embarrassed. I think it's awfully cute of you, though I wish you didn't have so many of that Johnson and maybe one of me." ,he says in a tone that carries the passion of a thousand un-spoken grievances, peeking your curiosity.
Lifting his hand off your chin, he lightly pets your hair: much like you assume he would do to perhaps a Boston terrier or a bengal kitten. With that same tenderness.
"I better let you get back to work. I'm sure you don't want some old man like me keeping you from your job"
Bashfully you smile, subtly shaking your head in retort. However he does raise a good point, such a good point in fact that it has you turning your heels back in the direction of the front counter. But not before turning your head slightly back—subtly saying goodbye with a smile and a slight wave of the fingertips, to which he mirrors with a sheepish, smug grin.
By the time your shift ends your exhausted and love sick over that man, whom you had only had in your presence for a bijou length of time but had been pondering about for hours.
Reaching for your bag before officially clocking out, you notice a new edition to your bag. A bright white and navy blue pin labelled 'Robert F. Kennedy for Vice President' surprised enough already, you're positively baffled to find a small engraving of a number etched into the backside of the pin.
What was on it, you may ask? Well, Robert F. Kennedy's phone number no less,
And that's how it started.
*End of flashback*
There were moments when you were faced with the awkward societal magnifying glass put on your relationship, and increased ten fold because of your scandalous age gap. I mean come on, it was only twelve years. It wasn't that bad. Though there were times you were reminded every now and then of the twelve year generational divide between you two, like in the instance of when he found that pesky little shoe-box underneath your bed.
*Start of flashback*
"Look at me"
"No I simply cannot bear it, Bobby!" you muffle out, the sound muddled due to your mousy blonde curls interference.
"C'mon, sweetie. It's nothing to be ashamed about, you're a grown young woman. I expected this from you, I'd be weirded out if you didn't partake in this sort of stuff. It's endearing, I promise." ,bobby teases, making a big show of his "promise" by dramatically holding out his arms in a prayer motion.
An action you find less than funny: ending with Bobby getting a pillow through straight towards his head, to which he dodges with ease.
What had caused this whole mess was that you'd tasked Bobby with the mission of finding that cotton camisole he'd so recklessly strewn across your bedroom in the throws of your shared passion. It was your belief that if he did it he should fix it.
However that adventure had led to bobby finding a particularly embarrassing set of erotic books hidden in a shoebox. Each with a more embarrassingly brazen title than it's former.
You had never seen him laugh so much than that day.
"Honey, I'm not laughing at you. It's just-y'know back in my day we never had this. We had to use our imagination, oh how times are changing. It's exciting really" he says adopting a semi sarcastic tone that borders on mocking.
His comments cause you to sulk even more, retreating into yourself perched at the foot of the bed, "Bobby don't be mad, I don't even read that stuff now! not with you. I was so in-experienced back then , I had no idea about anything."
"Oh baby, c'mere" he motions you to him, eventually gathering you up into a bundle and takes you into his lap.
Combing through your hair he explains "Baby of course I'm not made at you. How could I be? with such a pretty face like this. Y'know I'm glad you had those books, though I do like keeping you all to my self. And I certainly don't want to share you with any fictional man." he says in an order to lighten up the room, while dabbing slightly at your cheeks
"Don't cry pretty girl, I hate to see you cry, it hurts me, hurts me real bad. I know you don't wanna hurt me now do ya? Huh?"
Nodding, you compose yourself slightly and lay your head timidly on his chest: slightly hairy and stunk of an addictive sort of musk.
Your slightly moved when he moves his body trying to get something out of his pocket
"Princess, look what I found!"
And there it was your favourite cotton camisole, back in your possession. Sometimes you didn't know how he did it, he just did.
*End of flashback*
And that's how your relationship went for six months. Though it was hard to maintain a relationship being that he was in such a different life stage than you, and coupled with the fact that he was on a gruelling campaign trail with his brother. To be honest most days he would come and see you, you'd just lay in bed soaking up each other's presence. On the days you would venture outside as a couple you got more than a couple looks, and you had your fair share of unfavourable coverage in the media being that you were the controversially young girlfriend by the side of the man who's brother was on track to become president of the United States. But you both brush it off, you knew your truths.
You hadn't seen bobby in two whole weeks and you were beginning to get desperate. Though it wasn't like he was depriving you, he stuck to a strict schedule of calling you every day at seven in the evening: no matter rain or shine. Some times he would catch you eating a late dinner, for which he would scold you about adopting the tone he used in those senate meetings. And others where he would catch you in bed early, and one thing would lead to another. Thank god that you both had been smart enough to check for wiretapping, or else it would've made you two more of social piranhas than you already were...
And sure enough at seven pm, your phone rang off the hook,
"Hey baby, how are ya? Tell me all about what a sweet girl like you was doing all day? I wanna hear it all, leave no detail out." he says in a tone that reveals his true earnest nature that you've come to so cherish in your relationship.
So, you indulge him, "Honey, I got up so early, and then, I got into the shower"
He hums attentively down the line, encouraging you to tell him what you did next: to which you inform him that you took a nap mid-day, "I was just able to go back to sleep for a hour and a half. So that rocked, um, anyway."
"Did ya dream of anything special?" he says while shifting in his leather chaise seat: you assumed he was halted up in his hotel in some nameless city along the trail.
"I had this dream where, um, I don't know-" you trail off sharing some half-baked dream that you weren't sure you comprehend yourself. Apologising you ask about his day,
"Oh sweetie, don't apologise I asked, I wanted to know. I did want to talk about something with you though. Y'know how Jack is coming back to Oregon before the primary. Well, I thought what better a time to introduce you to my family. They'll just adore you baby, I promise just like I do."
Blushing and taken by surprise you bashfully reply, of course agreeing.
"That's great, you'll do amazing. Though, I do have to warn you about their line of questioning. They have a penchant for sort of quizzing girls that I take home about world events, it's like a sport to them-my parents I mean, my siblings will be just fine to handle. I just want you to be prepared."
"Okay, well what kind of events. Like events in your times?" you say sarcastically.
"Okay, Miss Attitude. I'm not from the 1890s, y'know we're only a decade apart. But I'll quiz you when I visit you in a couple days. I'll make it real easy for you, put in some recent events that you know: though you're a smart cookie you'll get it in no time baby."
"Bob, you're making me very nervous. They're not going to go too hard on me right?"
"Oh my sweet, you'll get used to them. They make a big fuss but they're relatively harmless, they'll see how happy you make me and that'll be the end of it. Promise."
After his assurances, you were left unbridled with happiness after you hung up the phone. I mean how hard could it be to charm a family like the Kennedys, they seemed nice enough? You charmed one of their sons so how troublesome could it really be? Jackie looked warm and open in the newspaper, Joan looked a delight and Jack well I'm sure you could bate your eye at him and he would be sufficiently pleased at your presence. Though that left out the parents, which were often the hardest of the bunch when fulfilling the daunting duty of meeting the family, you were sure it would be Bobby assured you so.
And why would he ever need to lie to you?
