Unseen | ER John Carter x Reader (ch.2)
Tumblr media
Series Masterlist
Chapter One — Chapter Three
Pairings: John Carter x Fem!Reader
Summary of the chapter: Let’s know a little more about John Carter and Y/N’s relationship in their first years.
Word Count: 2171
Unseen ER | Chapter Two.
Every story starts from the beginning, and the story between John Carter and Y/N L/N had, also, a beginning. Far into their third year as med students, both of them were accepted into the County General teaching program; up until that point, none of them had met. Carter had done more "fancy" specialties like dermatology, while Y/N had been more enthusiastic about trauma situations, which obviously means that she was way more prepared to be in the Emergency rotation than him.
John Carter's medical tug had its origin in the death of his baby brother. God, he missed him. Bobby was John's partner in crime and mischief until he got sick; then John became his brother's confident and rock. Both children were well aware of the pain and uncertainty in their parents' eyes; there was nothing they could do to help Bobby. He was going to die, no matter what the doctors tried. John made up his mind then. He was going to become a doctor.
The Carters were old money in Chicago. They had different companies and foundations, and although they understood the point of helping those with fewer resources, the truth is that apart from giving them money, they didn't do much. After Bobby's death, John's parents suffocated in their grief, ignoring his remaining child, who grew up with his grandparents and an open mind. He wanted a change, and he wanted to be part of said change. Of course, the family allowed him to study medicine, although they kept envisioning his future as head of the Carter company without asking about his opinion. He had no voice.
Although John grew up surrounded by money and fancy items, he had principles, expectations, and goals. He wanted to be a surgeon. Why? Well, it was the most difficult specialty, of course. If he was able to pull out a good performance, if he was able to understand, learn, and use the knowledge to help people from the darkness of death, then he could happily go to his family and say: "My work as a doctor is more useful than being in the company; give it to Chase, he will do just fine."
What John didn't expect was the fact that working in the ER was more exciting, electrifying, and rewarding. He fell in love with the rush, the quiet, the work against the clock, the delivery of babies in taxis… Yeah, even the complaints weren't so bad after a few hours. He loved it; and he could totally understand why Y/N had always that bursting and contagious energy inside her body, glowing eyes, and determined stance– she lived for those moments in the ER.
Y/N had fit in perfectly with Doctor Mark Greene on the first night of their shift together. They worked together as if they had always done it. She didn't hesitate. She didn't vomit. She was home.
John, on the other hand, felt like a disaster. Doctor Peter Benton seemed to despise him and to enjoy torturing him, seeing him fail. Because he did fail. He hesitated. He vomited. He felt unworthy to be a doctor and that echoed in his mind just like the condescending affirmations of his grandmother.
Just in the middle of his first night, a shot wound came into trauma, and although he wanted to help… well, up until this point he had just specialized in simple things. John felt dizzy and nauseous, and Benton just dismissed him with an "I don't need you anyway" which was fair, but ouch. He went outside, to the cold Chicago air. He crouched with the stethoscope between his hands, pressing it to his forehead, trying to calm his breathing.
John Carter, the failure.
Mark Greene came looking for him. His calm steps echoed like there was nothing else but him and the Emergency entrance. Greene was not like Benton; he looked and was kind. He was interested in the students' improvements, and in the professionals' well-being under his wing in the ER. As he approached John, he kept his distance. He gave him privacy by not looking straight at him, and not invading his personal space.
"I thought I was gonna be sick… I'm sorry." Carter confessed with a sigh.
"Don't ever say you're sorry," Mark advised. "See, there're two kinds of doctors: there's the kind that gets rid of their feelings and the kind that keeps them," he explained as he closed the distance with the student. "If you're going to keep your feelings you're going to get sick from time to time, that's just how it works."
John leaned his head against the wall behind him, feeling the cold concrete clash with the hotness of his skull. Mark Greene, with his green scrubs, round frameless glasses, and his hands behind his back, seemed both strong and kind.
"Keep your head down," he ordered; his voice sterner than before.
John knew that his nausea was easier to die if he did as he was told, but he took his time to comply, undoing his tie. Greene crouched right in front of him. He had been approaching the student as if he was some sort of wounded wild animal in need of help; he was to some extent.
"People come in here and they're sick, dying, and bleeding… and they need our help. Helping them is more important than how we feel." Carter nodded to Greene's words. "But it still a pain in the ass sometimes," he added, wanting to break the solemn tone of the atmosphere between them. Carter broke with a soft breath of a laugh, that kind that fights against the will to cry. "Sometimes I just want to quit and do something else," Greene claimed, and whether it was the truth or a lie, no one could tell. They shared a look, searching for an answer they didn't have. "Why don't you take a few more minutes?"
"Yeah…"
Mark Greene got up and started walking towards the hospital, in slow steps, looking back. "By the way, I was in medical school with Benton. He used to get sick all the time so don't let him give you any crap. Okay? You're gonna be fine."
That talk engraved itself in John Carter's memory with fire. Whenever he felt useless, restless, frustrated, alone… Mark Greene's words echoed in his mind.
Mark Greene was a good teacher.
He was a good doctor.
He was–
Yeah. He was.
He didn't have that talk with Y/N, there was no need for it because she already knew that. Greene could feel and see the fire in her determination to be good to the patients, to help them, to keep her own emotions and feelings, and be empathic but not to the point of ending up suffocated with her own remorse. He talked to her, of course.
"You can't save them all," he said. "You can try; we all do. Yes, sometimes is our fault as doctors because we have not done the proper thing. Yet sometimes it just happens no matter how hard we tried."
"I could've–"
"No," he cut her off, "you couldn't have. All the what-ifs that are running through that head of yours have only one purpose: to make you a better doctor. Don't punish yourself, Y/N; just learn."
Shearing their learnings was something that unified Y/N and Carter during that time. It made them stronger, although it could be quite tense at times.
John Carter was a cutie, which he was well aware of, obviously. He was tall and slim, with perfectly smooth brown hair, lovely doe eyes, and a crocket smile; half adorable and half mischievous. He was fun and witty and kind and smart and– and– Yeah, Y/N fell deep for him. Who could've blamed her? Really? Carter had some sort of magnet that made people like him, whether romantically or platonically, didn't matter.
The first time she asked him out on a date, he stuttered, looked around, and with all the kindness of his heart, said "I don't think we should. I'm… I mean, we're going to be seeing each other here all the time and it would be weird if it doesn't work like– I don't know."
Y/N understood that, and although she felt her face hot with shame, she gave him a big smile and a nod. They didn't talk about it anymore. Of course, she ended up finding out about the crush he had on Susan Lewis. She did not correspond with his feelings, though Y/N was certain it was more about the teacher-student situation than Susan being immune to Carter's charms. Then, the next year (1995), he started something with Harper Tracy, very quietly at first; Y/N only found out when Carter comforted Ross about him sleeping with a student. That was awkward. Y/N had to agree to some extent that it was better not to be caught in the middle of a mess like that one.
She felt like a fool, nonetheless. Y/N avoided Carter for some time, which wasn't that hard as their shifts were opposite most of the time.
They were on their psychiatric rotation when they spoke again.
Carter had been feeling restless lately. He loved surgery, he wanted to become a surgeon, and he knew that the rotation between all the departments in the hospital was required for his final grades. However, his skin crawled with anticipation every time they received a consult call from the ER. Oh, boy, how much he enjoyed going down there, changing the quietness from psychiatric for the healthy noise from the ER… yeah, that was life. Unable to stop himself, he found his emotions mixing and tangling in awful ways, torturing his mind. He needed air and he resourced to go upstairs, to the helicopter's landing space on the roof of the hospital.
This is where he found her.
Y/N was bracing herself on the ledge, her eyes lost in the Chicago skyline that was lighting up as the sun kept hiding for the night, her hair a mess blessed by the wind. She took a long breath; she held it closing her eyes, and then she let go of it. Carter observed how with the air in her lungs, her tension left her body.
"You're not gonna jump, are you?" He tried to joke distastefully. His arms were crossed around his body, trying to keep the warmth.
Y/N gave him a look on top of her shoulder, acknowledged his presence, and turned again to face the city. John took that as an invitation and walked towards the ledge too.
"Hey, there, stranger," he smiled.
"Hi."
The silence felt heavy and suffocating. "It's something wrong?" She shrugged instead of giving him an answer. "Y/N, please. Talk to me. I miss you."
"You do know that I have feelings for you, don't you?" He snorted as if she was just playing a prank. The look of sadness in her eyes made him go pale and open his mouth, looking for an excuse. "Save it. Look, if you don't like me like that I totally get it, Carter. Just– Don't lie to me again."
"I have not lied to you."
"No. You gave me a shitty excuse and you forget." The shadow of recognition flashed through his face. "Yup."
"It's different."
"Oh, pray tell me, how much different it is."
"My relationship with Harper started out of fun. We meant nothing to get out of it. There's no pressure for it to go somewhere."
"And ours does?" She laughed skeptically and hurt.
"Of course!" John burst.
The silence fell upon them once again. Feeling like her heart was shattering, Y/N focused her eyes on a big building away from them; the wind slapping her face with cold indifference. Carter, blushing uncomfortably, danced from one foot to another, feeling colder and colder as he stood leaning on the ledge.
"We have something now. Something big. I trust you. I– I like you very much. But this– this thing, whatever it is, could explode and break and destroy everything in its path if we misstep." John felt his stomach clench. "Think about this. If we start something, it's going to be something big."
"I only asked you out for a coffee, Carter," she spat, looking at him dead in the eyes.
"I know…" he whispered, taken aback. "That would've led into dinner. Another date. Then another. A relationship. Marriage… Just– I'm not ready for something that steady now. I feel that if we start something I'm going to ruin it. Can't we just be friends? Good friends. The best friends the world has ever seen?"
Stupid.
Fuck, so uncomfortably stupid, and yet…
"Yeah," she sighed. "I guess."
While they decided on that and Carter definitely enjoyed the arrangement quite a lot, she hid her suffering for the lonely nights in her small apartment, covered in bed, sobbing against her pillow.
Yeah, stupid.
To be continued…

I posted an ER fanfic recently, a little one-shot about Susan Lewis getting to adopt her niece Susie and starting a romance with Mark Greene in an alternate Season 2, and because tumblr is tumblr, the original post didn’t show up in the tags. So let’s try again. It’s called
Wake Up, Little Susie. Enjoy!

Life was full of surprises, you had learned that pretty quickly in the emergency room. And you learned early on to take advantage of the breaks you were given, whether that be due to the weather or because one of the residents (and sometimes an attending) told you to take one. This time around it was for a reason a bit more exciting. You couldn’t help the giddy feeling that the snow elicited in you, after all you had grown up in Chicago and spent hundreds of days playing out in the snow. Staring out the window, listening to the quiet hums of the emergency room with no patients, you thought back to the days you would spend out in the snow. Often you found yourself at the Carter family home, running around in the snow with John as his grandmother stood by the window watching you guys play. It was in the snow that you realized your feelings for him. You were fourteen, rolling around in the snow after he had tackled you down to the ground. Your faces were inches apart and for a split second a part of you wanted to close the distance, press your lips against his own. But some part of you stopped that from happening then.
And looking back at it, that was one of your biggest regrets. You wished you had taken control earlier than when you did. Nothing could change anything, although, and at least you ended up with him in the end. Of course, you still kicked yourself for falling in love with your best friend. Especially since you had promised yourself that you would never do such a thing. (Then again, who didn’t make promises to themselves that would eventually fall through). Now that you two have been together since you were eighteen, and married for just over two years, everything else seemed small. All of the moments of what could have been seem minuscule in comparison to you guys actually being together.
“Y/l/n?” You turned your head away from the window, smiling at Susan who had called out your name. “We just pulled a prank on Carter and we’re about to have him find out, so if you want to come and watch.”
“I would love to do nothing more than watch this.” Standing up, you walked into the admit area and stood next to Lydia. “What did you do to him?”
“Just something fun,” Mark smiled. “You’re lucky you weren’t sleeping.”
“Sleep is for the weak,” you mumbled, waving your hand in the air. “Let’s get on with the show.”
Mark grabbed the intercom from behind him, holding it for a few seconds before he pressed the button. He let out a short laugh before speaking into it, “Doctor Carter stat trauma one, Doctor Carter stat trauma one.”
You leaned onto the counter, arms resting and holding most of your body weight as noises came out from exam room four. A smile formed on your lips when the door opened abruptly, John tumbling out from behind it with a cast on his leg. Laughing, you brought one of your hands up to cover your mouth as John walked closer to everyone standing in the room. He pointed a finger between everyone, a smile playing on his lips as he accused all of you for the cast. The finger landed on you, which made you scoff in response. “Y/n,” John said softly, “did you do this to me?”
You blinked. “No.”
“I have a hard time believing that.”
“I have better things to be doing,” you shrugged. “The cast is cute though, I suggest you keep it.”
“I hate you,” John mumbled, shaking his head. “I’m guessing it was you two then?” He pointed at Susan and Mark who shared a playful look. “Can someone please take it off?”
“I agree with Y/l/n’s statement, it looks cute,” Mark smiled, patting your shoulder. “I’m not taking it off.”
“Neither am I.” Susan grabbed her mug of coffee from the admit desk, walking back to the lounge. “Have fun with that Carter!”
“Thanks!” John screamed out sarcastically, watching as everyone but you walked away from the area as if nothing was wrong. Your care-free persona shifted almost immediately, allowing your soft side to show as you looked over John’s expression. “So now you want to be sweet?”
“I can’t act normal around you,” you felt your cheeks heat up. “They would catch on.”
“And if they did?”
“I’m not sure.” Biting at your tongue, you smiled a little. You reached out to touch his cheek for a fleeting moment, quickly pulling it back before anyone around could see you two. “I would really love to kiss you right now, though.”
“Me too.”
“Snow days just remind me of when we were younger and I would come over to your grandmothers house,” you smiled softly, a chuckle leaving John’s lips. “Do you not remember?”
“Oh no, I do. You would drop by around eight in the morning,” John sat down, angrily tapping on the cast. “That time was when my grandmother was awake and I was still asleep, so you’d spend time with gamma and talk to her. But you were always there when I woke up, effortlessly beautiful. It was unfair, really.”
You leaned down, looking to make sure no one could see you before whispering in his ear, “You know, I always wanted to kiss you in the snow.”
“In the snow?” John mumbled back. “It’s a good things there's a lot of that going around.”
“Do you think they would notice if we just, I don't know, went missing?”
“Probably so,” John pursed his lips, a nod falling from his head. “Seems worth the risk though.”
“It wouldn’t kill us if they found out,” you shrugged innocently. “I mean, I’d just be kissing my husband. It’s not like we have any patients to worry about.”
“Other than myself.”
“Right, sorry. Other than John Carter who is stuck in a cast he doesn't need.”
“No one from the outside knows that,” John stood up. “For all they know, I’m injured.”
You rolled your eyes, walking towards the doors to the ambulance bay. John followed after you, smiling at the sight of the snow falling to the ground. When the cold air enveloped you, you took in a slight breath. Hugging your jacket closer to your body, you looked up at the sky. It was the kind of weather people expected in Chicago, cold and snowy. This time it had the added bonus of being December, which meant there was the possibility for a white Christmas. You loved it when it snowed at Christmas time, it just made the season feel right. John stood beside you, one of his arms resting lightly against your waist. Neither one of you moved to find a remote space, which meant neither one of you were necessarily trying to hide the relationship from the people inside. In fact, if you cared enough you probably would have noticed their faces in the windows of the lobby and the lounge.
“You know,” John mumbled into your ear, “this would be a lot more fun if we kissed right now.”
“I can think of things more fun than kissing,” you smiled, turning so your body faced his. “Too bad we’re at work right now.”
“So that's how this is going to go?”
“How?”
“With you teasing me.”
“Sure seems like it,” you nodded, a playful smirk on your lips. “I love you, did you know that?”
“Surprisingly, I don’t think I did. Did you know that I love you as well?”
“Can’t say I was aware of that fact.”
“Strange how that happens.”
“Quite.”
“Are we just going to do this until I kiss you?” John questioned as your lips came closer to each others.
“I could do this all day,” you whispered against his lips.
“I know you could,” he whispered against yours.
“Just kiss me.”
“Say no more.”
John quickly pressed his lips to yours, hands coming to cup your cheeks. You wrapped your arms around his neck, curving your body into his. When you two broke apart, you took a few seconds to open your eyes. You were content with everything in that moment. The kiss, the smile on your lips, your husband, and especially the snow that continued to fall around you. When you opened your eyes, you were met with John’s brown doe eyes staring at you. He had a boyish grin stuck on his lips as he pulled you in for another kiss and then another and then another.
“They’re bound to know now,” you laughed, pulling your arms away from his neck. “At least, they know something. We could keep the fact that we’re married away from them if you want.”
“If we don’t tell them, it’ll keep them guessing.”
“But if we do tell them, we could probably kiss more often while here.”
“This is why you’re the smarter one of the two of us.”
“I’m not surprised,” You began to pull off your coat as you walked in the doors. “I mean, I’m me and you’re you. Of course I’m the smart one.”
“I know that I said that, but it still hurts.”
“Says the one who didn’t wake up when Doctor Greene and Doctor Lewis were putting a cast on your leg,” You laughed, walking into the lounge and putting your coat in your locker. Mark and Susan shared a look, a smirk on their lips.
“So,” Mark drawled out, a brow raised. “Anything you’d like to tell us?”
“The snow is pretty,” you smiled innocently, putting your stethoscope around your neck. “Don’t you agree John?”
“Definitely, it’s very pretty,” John nodded in response. “I just love when there’s snow outside.”
“Me too.”
“Reminds me of being a kid.”
“And when we would just terrorize your parents until they yelled at us to get out,” you mumbled, pushing at John’s shoulder as the four of you walked out to the admit desk. “God, your dad hated me.”
“Your dad didn’t like me much more,” John retorted. “He really hated me after we started to date.” Your face dropped a little, a smile forming on your lips when everyone in the admit area turned towards you two. His eyes went wide for a moment as he realized what he just said. You let out a slight laugh as Carol walked into the room.
“Did you just say,” Haleh smiled, pointing a finger between you and John. “Date?”
“I,” John stumbled on his words, making you shake your head.
“John and I are married,” you shrugged, trying to divert any attention away from it. “Nothing too abnormal going on here. So, how are you guys doing?”
“Married?” Carol blinked a few times, her eyebrows drawing together as she looked between you two.
“We’ve been together since we were eighteen,” John smiled. “We got married at twenty-one.”
“And you didn’t tell anyone here?” Susan leaned back on the desk, a laugh leaving her lips. “I always thought you two had something going on though. The longing glances were getting old.”
“Personally, I thought it was cute,” Haleh laughed, shaking her head. “Carter’s puppy dog eyes were really the selling point.”
“It was Y/n’s pout that tugged at my heart,” Lydia popped in, making your cheeks flame. “Seriously, all she had to do was jut out her bottom lip and Carter would do anything she wanted.”
“We should have realized this a while ago,” Connie laughed.
"Don’t hold it against yourselves. Honestly, we should have told everyone from the get-go. It’s not like it changes everything for us.”
“You two are cute together,” Carol smiled, placing a hand on your shoulder. She paused, turning back towards you with a wide grin. “Can we see your ring?”
“What?”
“Your ring, can we see it? You don’t wear it on your finger.” Carol grabbed at your hand, holding it in front of your own face.
“Oh, uh, yeah.” You grabbed at the chain around your neck, unclasping it so you could take your rings off of it. Sliding them on, you smiled a little at them. Your engagement ring was his great-grandmothers, you always found yourself staring at it. Each time you found something new about it: a different knick on the metal on the ring. Each time you often wondered about how it got there. Carol took hold of your hand again once the rings were on it, eyes wide and a smile growing.
“How’d you afford this Carter?”
“Family heirloom,” John mumbled, running his hand across the back of his neck. “I definitely wouldn’t be able to afford a diamond that large.”
You bit back a laugh (because the both of you could buy hundreds of diamonds that size if you wanted to), “Not at all.”
At least the snowfall did one good thing (other than stopping the E.R. from constant use), you and John didn’t have to hide anymore.

Note
Susan and mark were the couple we deserved
You're correct and you should say it!
Tumblr media
I am forever haunted by the miscommunication between them when she invited him to Hawaii and they both were like "did you mean--?" "No! I mean, unless you--" and then she backpedaled before he could say yes. Ugh these stupid idiots. I love them.

@raging-disaster & @useless-fangirl-does-fan-art asked:
Mark&Susan or Mark&Elizabeth
“Mark you are my best friend and I don’t know how I’m gonna make it without you
Don’t go”
“And I don’t want you to go but I want you so
So tell me what we choose”

lewis is friends with everybody.
greene was her first friend. she arrived at county when she was an intern and he was third-year. there is a saying at county -- only the nurses actually say it, of course, but everyone secretly believes it -- that you are forever bound to the first person who shows you how to get free snacks from the third vending machine from the left. it was four in the morning, her second overnight shift, and she’d forgotten her pitiful lunch at home. he saw her, curled in the corner of the empty waiting room with a cooling mug of something which was no longer coffee, too tired or too hungry or even too miserable to cry, and he asked her which chocolate bar she liked better.
carol and susan rarely speak, but they understand one another. susan was the first female er resident at county in three years, and carol was desperate for someone of her gender to work with. she wasn’t expecting baby-faced, calm-voiced dr. lewis to be intelligent, affable, and possibly the least condescending person she’s ever met. susan always looked up to carol -- she saw herself in her, quiet, reserved, determined. after susan moves away, they still send each other letters. mostly, they’re about the weather.
carter is the partner-in-crime lewis never knew she needed. they never spoke much before she first left for phoenix, each with too much on their plates and an awkward encounter in their history to bond. but after she returned, the stars collided, and they became fast friends. friends who are not afraid to be stupid around each other. friends who make each other stupid, in truth. friends who tell each other to their face what a disaster the other is, but would ride to the ends of the earth to save the other.
abby and susan are an odd pair. the hospital throws little welcome meetings when anyone joins the er. susan’s was not so much a meeting as it was a party. she is friends with everybody, of course, and though five years passed since her face was seen in chicago, the sight of her returning was still much celebrated. abby does not have a taste for parties. neither does susan, which is how they met -- on the roof, escaping the same celebration. the moment they realized, a friendship was formed forever.
weaver and lewis... are not friends, not really. but there was a cold and wintry afternoon, on weaver’s first shift, when a car skidded on the last black ice of chicago may and filled county general with a dozen critical traumas. weaver’s hip hurts after a while, especially a while of high-stress medicine, and the cold seat in the waiting room was the only one she could find. there is a saying at county -- only the nurses actually say it, of course, but everyone secretly believes it -- that you are forever bound to the first person who shows you how to get free snacks from the third vending machine from the left. for weaver, it was lewis.
