I am way too tired/jetlagged to make this post right now, but the reason Armada Starscream is so specifically well done to me actually isn't just the way he's got more depth than just wanting to take over Megatron. It's the way he falls back on this image he has of himself as someone who is solely focused on Megatron. And he is obsessed with Megatron, but the disconnect between Starscream and his image of himself is what gives him actual depth.

The reason this is so cool to me is like, that self-image--that he is single-mindedly obsessed with Megatron and will sacrifice everything else for that goal, no matter who gets hurt--is pretty close to what every other Starscream is. (The selfishness you associate with Starscream is a little more subtle, but it's there in the "no matter who gets hurt" clause imo.)

So if you go into this as a Transformers fan, you're already expecting Starscream to betray Megatron and try to best him and rule the Decepticons. But so does Starscream, even when he's demonstrably proven to both his peers and the audience that he's more than that. It's almost like his past incarnations--or the audience's expectation of him--haunt him. It turns his own internal man-versus-self conflict into this really cool man-versus-narrative conflict.

And what's crazy about this is, through the last moments of this arc, Starscream does grow beyond the narrative we'd expect from other Starscreams! But he never admits that to himself, because it's easier for him to cling to the idea that he's laser-focused on his hatred of Megatron. Every time he helps the minicons--every time he helps the humans--even in his last words, he LIES to himself and everyone around him that everything he did was always about Megatron. Because it's easier to simplify himself than to grasp that he might be a complex character. Because he's a person and he has all the messy conflicts that come with that. He falls back on the same ideas every single other Starscream did, and THAT is his undoing. Not that he is self-centered because he's Starscream. Not that he is obsessed with Megatron because he's Starscream. That he THINKS he is all of those things and he will not LET himself be anything else.

I would argue that that's a bigger theme in Armada, as well. Optimus and Megatron more or less spend their final fight coming to terms with their story roles in Transformers. I really feel like if you sneezed on them, they would realize they do this in every universe and in every timeline. Starscream's is the most interesting example to me, though, because he's such a departure from other versions of Starscream; hell, he acts (and looks, lol) a lot more like some incarnations of Thundercracker. But he's still got classic Starscream in him in this roundabout meta reference. He's like an homage to his namesake. It's so cool! And it works perfectly with the story he's a part of.

The Point #(wild robot being a good example of very obvious media meant for kids that is still clearly like. fantastic)#but in general i think meta media (metagames and the like) kinda lose their impact when you have to explain them #people forget that half life doesn't really hold your hand about this #because valve games are so entrenched in internet culture #it goes beyond ''the one free man'' as an icon - the game is about the horror of being a video game player character #and especially of being a silent protagonist #gordon's helplessness in the plot and the way he's ''the one free man'' but not free is a commentary on how games funnel you through their #stories while acting like the player character has any agency #gman's ability to teleport players around various environments and even to/from stasis is similar to how gamedevs load/unload characters #and teleport them around cutscenes and environments when the player cant see them #he gives them just enough freedom to feel natural while keeping tight control over their purpose in the story he is telling. like an author #SIMILARLY. this is why you can't do myhouse.wad again #part of the horror of myhouse.wad is the familiarity of it and the subtle offputting changes from standard doom mapping FOR DOOM PLAYERS #even down to how it was released #it isnt just a silly meta internet horror game everything about it was purpose-built to send goosebumps specifically to doom modders and #classic doom enthusiasts #ANYWAYS. ARMADA IS LIKE THIS TO ME #behind all the anime nonsense and the like 20 filler episodes in the start there's a genuinely clever commentary on like #transformers as a franchise and as a story that keeps getting retold #THERE'S MORE TO IT THAN THAT BUT YOU GET MY POINT.

Hear me out (or don't... it's fine I'm just venting and mean) yeah um I don't believe Chakotay was saved in Prod*gy s2.

#the 'time travel' makes no sense when you think on it. What happened to Prime Chakotay? He got killed they showed that.#At the end s1 Janeway finds an 'alternate chakotay in an alternate timeline' and that's the one they go and get #we saw the original get merc'd in the message. That ACTUALLY happened. Lmao.....#They didn't prevent THAT death because they didn't go to THAT Solum with the Infinity and stop it from happening #instead it was 'ALTERNATE #' implying other.#OG Chakotay wasn't taken over by the alternative one either nothing suggests that was the direction for him in s2 #they didn't do anything like 'well you see chakotay because at the end of s2 when we converged timestreams you have merged with your other'#if they did want to recover the original from s1 then keep that clear instead of being convoluted dont use an alternate timeline wtf #instead the plot was focused on gywns stupid fucking paradox plot and her being fixed #chakotay was the one in a paradox too did that not matter nah dw about it he had to die for this outcome or someshit lmao why #In the extended message given to admiral janeway it shows him clearly getting left behind and surrounded. Sadly no one intervened.#I dont understand why they couldnt have just made s2 about his rescue alone IF they took their time it wouldnt be so difficult #to follow #above that the one they rescued was ruined by the 10 year gap so he wasn't 'saved' at all. #bulletbilltime rambling #life is strange #paper mario ttyd #another one in the 'absolutely stupid ideas' pile that I am taking way too seriously #somehow not the weirdest nintendo property I've tried to put LiS in.#but yeah there's like... something darkly fascinating there #both properties feature a great calamity involving a storm #and imagining regular old max with no fighting abilities whatsoever using her powers to overcome stuff mario can just jump on #is deeply fascinating to me #it turns a lot of these conflicts into more cerebral ones #not even 'talk it out' but like... 'outsmart your opponent so they can be defeated without needing to attack'.#and imagining max coming into her own as she learns to outwit dragons and pirate ghosts and the like #I even imagined the intro sequence but it's rachel sweet-talking the shopkeep into letting her try to open the box #so she can then run off and pawn it off to get coins so she and chloe can leave rogueport #however since the shopkeep is a plant the x-nauts are immediately alerted and they catch up to her before she can find a pawn shop #so the peach segments are now peach and rachel trying to figure out how to get info down to the others.#chloe works as a mechanic on the excess express btw. it was the closest I could think to a car mechanic type job for her to have #max and chloe would find each other as max is heading to glitz pit #and then chloe immediately gets max to join her as a tag team duo to get the championship #taking advantage of her abilities to lay the smackdown on their enemies #ALSO MAX AND CHLOE ON FLAVIO'S SHIP??? HELLO THIS IS TOO PERFECT #chloe gets way too into it and seeks out a pirate outfit and goads max into getting one too #meanwhile goombella and the others are just sitting there looking at them like 'when are they gonna kiss'#(mario is conspicuously absent because peach never sent him the map)#(in this AU peach is chased down by the x-nauts before she can try to send it and ends up giving it to max as a desperate gambit)#(since them trying to take it from her means they probably want it for evil and from a quick interaction she can tell Max is a kind soul)#oh yeah also shadow queen causing a storm like the one in arcadia bay is a given #that's just... duh #anyway this crossover is stupid and insane and I am EXTREMELY invested in plotting out a story with it now #will I write it? fuck if I know. nanowrimo's right around the corner tho......

i miss when splatoon was fun. it feels like the whole game is just for super competitive battles all the time. which i mean, sure, i can deal with them pretty well. but it felt like splat1 and early days of 2 were more laid back, yknow? i didnt have to fight in such a hardcore way Every Single Battle. i could just have more relaxing matches and have some fun.

every time i play it anymore, i just get frustrated. it really sucks considering (consquidering) the joy it had brought to me previously.

also sometimes i dont want to have to git gud. sometimes i want to not do well and not feel frustrated abt it bc theres still fun to be had even if you arent the best. but it doesnt feel that way in this game.

#honestly might have to do w the rise in shooter games ? more people play them more often #so theres more people who are just naturally really skilled #so then chumps like me who just arent great at the game get steamrolled constantly.#and even if i do really well if ive got bad teammates its all for nothing #and i can appreciate a good fight even if i lose!#but for the most part its like. no youre getting spawn camped for 2 solid minutes.#mostly bc the new maps really suck.#anyways.#pikmin 4 is coming out soon. video games can be good :}#speaking of 4. i wonder if i would even be inclined to get splat 4 when we get that in the future.#i do love the story and characters and lore. so much #but since the game is mostly made for the multiplayer. it would be a waste of $60 #to Not do the multiplayer part #ah well. theres always salmon run.

Guys I think the writing for fire emblem engage is somehow worse than fire emblem fates. Im a longtime fire emblem fan, I've played every recent game, and this... this is just Awful lmfao

Im still having plenty of fun & I have my handful of characters I love soooo much. But God fucking damn this writing is just some of the worst I've ever seen in a game

Final conclusion (since I ran out of tags): What Even Is This Fucking Game. Definitely my least favorite fire emblem game in many respects, but By God I'm going to finish this bitch and I'm gonna have plenty of fun as I do so. And I'm also going to make fun of every narrative choice it makes along the way bc the writing in this game is just SO fucking bad holy shit. I just need to finish this game and get on with my life already. God fuckin damn.)

#speculation nation #ive been critical of it from the start. bc it really isnt good. tho ive softened in some respects #it's plenty of fun thankfully. i enjoy the battle system a lot & the maps can be challenging in a fun way #but the moment i stop to think about Anything it all just feels so ridiculous #there have been a few moments it's surprised me. plot twists that were Almost cool.#but most of the time it's just throwing a bunch of shit out of left field at me and expecting me to be invested (im not)#so it's like. the 'plot twists' are either things i saw coming from a mile away OR things that r just so fucking insane it's not satisfying #like. the game saying 'oh man this thing you need to get to is at the bottom of this biiiig frozen lake! however will you get there?'#'how about... you trust the woman who has been an antagonist THE ENTIRE GAME UP UNTIL NOW to be telling the truth & to be helping u'#'heres a magic item she used the rest of her life to make! how sad! dont you feel bad for her? she wanted to be a mother!'#'no dont think about all the times she hit your little sister :) she feels bad about it so it's obviously ok actually :)'#'anyways take her magic item. itll get you to the bottom of the lake. how you ask? underwater breathing? PHHHSH'#'NAH your ass is going a thousand years into the past to break this thing b4 it fell into the lake OH ALSO you meet your past self #from when you were evil. good luck! :)'#im. not making any of this up. im not making ANY of this up and i really wish i was.#i was just rubbing my temples for that entire stretch of story it's so fucking stupid.#i think one of the most interesting things it did from a narrative standpoint was take away the rings 12 chapters in #so you hit rock bottom and have to crawl your way back out with the help of some unexpected allies #like. yea that's interesting. EXCEPT from a GAMEPLAY standpoint it's one of my least favorite fucking things in the game #you get used to this set of mechanics but halfway through you have to switch gears to an entirely different set of mechanics #and by the time you finally get everything back & ur army is full and whole. the game is almost over.#itd like that narrative choice SO MUCH MORE if it didnt set me back in such a major way & restrict total gameplay access to the End #every game has a slow trickle in of new characters so you dont have everyone until later in but EVEN THEN #you generally have everyone by 2/3rds way thru the game. then the last third you pick ur favs and u train them for the end #in this game. you dont get everyone until fucking chapter 23 of 26. my army is full and veyle is such a delight to have #but i only got her in CHAPTER. FUCKING. TWENTY THREE OF TWENTY SIX.#i just finished chapter 25. im nearly at the end. i love my main army but it feels like ive barely gotten to know them as a whole #bc it only finally formed TWO CHAPTERS AGO.#im just. god this game is so frustrating in a way ive NEVER experienced before. and ive played a lot of games!!!!!#like dont get me wrong im still having fun with it. i love a lot of the characters and the gameplay (now that i HAVE all of it) is So fun

Audiobooks should come with a glossary of important words, especially names and places, so everyone knows how to spell them.

#so you can text yell at your friends without having to spell it all wrong #and so you don't get distracted from the story trying to figure it out #all books - including audio - should also have a map #and a list of the horses names

i ordered a cake for the party but cause there's a completely same address as mine in a different district there was an issue and they mixed the two and now i have no cake and gonna have to wait like a week for a refund of the money :c

#i'm gonna have to buy it tomorrow sometime during the day :c but they were all out of the one i wanted in the supermarkets close by :c #also i had an on and off fever all day and i just feel like dying #funny story of the mixing of the addresses!!#one time last year a bunch of firefighter buses arrived at our building and all the tenants were going outside to see what's up #cause it was SO loud and they stopped right outside so we all fully thought the building was on fire but it turns out the fire was #on the same address but on the other district!! i hate u google maps and your stupid so easily fixed mistake that u never fix!!
