Probably posting about old computers and video games. Current thing I'm MOST abnormal about: Transformers (somehow). He/him/his, xe/xem/xyr, 20's.

i kind of want to post various tf doodles i have done, but generally i feel like i cant figure out wtf people like. care about? admittedly i'm not a big blog and especially not really someone who posts a *lot* of transformers so i dont expect my art to do well by default. but i also like. its hard to get myself to post detailed mech art when it consistently gets less than 10 notes despite being really difficult to draw lol

Not perfect and not always right but basically:
Is it a screen shot?
Is there a link?
Did you click/read the link?
Was it a real source (AP wire, local news, the original online post - not Fox, not the Sun, not NY Post, etc)?
Did you find any confirmation?
Did it strongly confirm a bias or suspicion?
Did it make you feel angry, smug, disgusted, superior, and/or helpless?
Is it important enough to you that you think it needs to be shared?
Do you have the energy, time, ability to research, confirm, and provide sources, links, and some additional clarifying details?
Generally I have this in mind, not necessarily always and not always observed, and I forget and blah blah. But it's a pretty simple guide to remember, and honestly items 1 and 9 cover me most of the time.

what if i told you there was one user on the russian social network/ video sharing website odnoklassniki/oднокла́ссники that has uploaded nearly every movie ever from 1896 to the current day, mostly with subtitles. and including that has uploaded every criterion collection film in full hd with subtitles. for free. all hail ok.ru user fleurinna guta
they keep their films in unlisted folders so you cant just see them all on their profile unfortunately but ill provide links. also don't ask me why this user separates their films in this way, i don't know and frankly it confuses me too.
EUROPEAN FILMS (sometimes includes west asian films?)
JAPANESE FILMS
CLASSIC FILMS (aka american and British films)
"MISC FILMS" (aka films from everywhere that isn't the usa, europe, japan. sometimes films from the GDR are in here which is confusing again because communist germany was still part of europe)
this is a much better alternative to stuff like 123movies or bflix because there are no hot singles in your area or games that you wont last 5 minutes playing. hope u enjoy and let us all praise and embrace user fleurinna guta

Have you seen this post?
Tumblr media
You probably have. It currently has over 120,000 notes, largely because of this addition.
Tumblr media
Of course it's going to get reblogged, this kind of unsourced factoid does numbers on here. But something about it wasn't quite right.
A bit of searching turned up the origin of the "fact".
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alright, so it's someone who posted this on reddit 4 years ago and somehow ended up in the search hits. And the post confuses the electric eel (from South America) with the electric catfish (from the Nile, which the Egyptians would have known about).
Tumblr media
Reminder: this is an electric eel (Electrophorus electricus). It is from South America. (image from Wikipedia)
Tumblr media
And this is an electric catfish (Malapterurus electricus). It is from the Nile and would have been familiar to the ancient Egyptians. (image from Wikipedia)
And then of course people were speculating in the notes to that post about trade routes between South America and Egypt. Excellent scholarship everyone.
At this point I was ready to call it another made-up internet fact that gets reified by people repeating it. But something was still bothering me.
An ancient Egyptian slab from 3100 BC. What could that be...
Oh.
Tumblr media
The Narmer palette. It's the goddamn Narmer palette. (image, once again, from Wikipedia)
So where is this "angry catfish"?
It's not the Egyptian name for the electric catfish.
It's... Narmer. It's Narmer himself.
Tumblr media
Narmer's name is written as above (detail of top middle of the palette), using the catfish (n`r) and the chisel (mr), giving N'r-mr. The chisel is associated with pain, so this reads as "painful catfish", "striking catfish", or, yes, "angry catfish" or other similar variants, although some authors have suggested that it means "Beloved of [the catfish god] Nar".
So.
Where does this leave us?
It would appear that this redditor not only confused electric eels with electric catfish, but also confused a Pharaoh's name with the name of a fish. And then it got pushed to the top search hits by a crappy search engine and shared uncritically on tumblr.
In short, "the electric eel is called angry catfish" factoid actually literacy error. Angry Catfish, who ruled upper Egypt and smote his enemies, is an outlier adn should not have been counted.
Also the Arabic name for the electric catfish is raad (thunder) or raada (thunderer).

musk is going to die in a Tesla explosion in 6 months after sticking his nose where it doesn't belong and we will never get a conclusive answer on whether it was a CIA car bomb or just a normal Tesla malfunction

could be a weird opinion because i don't know that i've seen other people express these thoughts in the same place, but i'm kind of glad miranda from mass effect annoyed me as much as she did. like, specifically because of everything going on with her backstory and her me2 loyalty mission. i think it adds a lot of depth to the world that even your most annoying coworker has her own scars, and her own aspirations - and that those aspirations are a lot more heartfelt than you'd think they are if you never gave her a chance to show you any side other than Annoying Coworker Side. and all of that doesnt make her less annoying. i think the world needs more reminders that this is true
