How SASE Plays an Important Role in Addressing New Cyber Threats - Technology Org
Cyber threats continue to evolve and become more difficult to address. The advent of more advanced artificial intelligence is making attacks worse in quantity and sophistication. Organizations have to contend with the reality of incessant attacks that only get worse over time, especially as they embrace more complex IT infrastructure that involve multiple cloud assets and SaaS solutions.

With IT resources now located on the cloud and away from the protection of on-premises security solutions, it is important to adopt security tools that extend into resources wherever they may be. This is where the Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) solution comes into play. This security concept was introduced in 2019 by consulting firm Gartner, and has since become one of the most dependable security solutions for modern enterprises. It brings network security together with wide-area networking (WAN) functions to provide protection against a wide range of new threats. It offers a unified way to address various cyber attacks without compromising connectivity.
SASE’s approach in cyber defense
SASE is designed to address the weaknesses in the traditional hub-and-spoke network architecture, wherein traffic is usually routed through centralized data centers and security appliances. This arrangement is associated with a number of challenges, particularly the emergence of latency problems, reduced security efficacy, and increased infrastructure complexity.
With SASE, various network security functions are integrated with WAN capabilities to ensure secure access to apps and resources irrespective of their location. Secure Access Server Edge provides a comprehensive and adaptive cybersecurity approach that effectively addresses possible cyber attacks.
SASE’s defense model centers on the following key goals: the reduction of the complexity of using multiple network security tools, flexibility and scalability in protecting systems, and zero trust. These goals help attain key advantages that define SASE’s role in addressing new cyber threats.
Simplifying the complexity
One of the biggest challenges in the way organizations address security threats is the use of multiple cybersecurity products. They can result in cybersecurity tool bloat, which makes security operations inefficient. It is difficult to manage several tools and keep up with all the security incident alerts and related notifications. They pose a complexity problem that can be addressed with the help of SASE.
SASE provides a unified interface for the management of multiple security tools. It makes it easy to manage Firewall-as-a-Service, secure web gateways, data loss prevention systems, cloud access security brokers, and various other tools. Additionally, it enables centralized security policy orchestration and enforcement wherein administrators define granular access controls and security policies based on various factors for consistent enforcement across the entire network architecture.
It also leverages threat intelligence feeds from various sources, consolidating all relevant threat information to optimize their impact on threat detection. SASE also conducts advanced analytics in real-time to extract insights from threat intelligence beyond the threat identities. Through machine learning and behavioral analysis technologies, it is possible to anticipate threats or detect obscure vulnerabilities that would otherwise be overlooked given the multitude of security solutions used in an organization at the same time.
It is also worth noting that SASE emphasizes identity-driven security. It focuses on the identity of users and devices instead of prioritizing traditional network perimeters to determine the areas to be protected. It maximizes the use of identity and access management (IAM) tools to enforce granular controls and detect threats more accurately with the help of contextual information. This identity-focused defense does not only improve threat prevention; it also simplifies the complexities that come with using multiple threat detection solutions.
Ensuring scalability and flexibility
Another major challenge for cybersecurity at present is the need to adjust to the changing demands for cyber protection. Cybersecurity has to be dynamic and scalable. It must be capable of agilely keeping up with the changes in an organization’s IT infrastructure and expanding potential attack surfaces. It also needs to be flexible to address security across different platforms.
SASE provides the scalability and flexibility modern organizations need to ensure adequate cyber defense with its cloud-native protection. It integrates various security functions as a cloud-native service that can be used to secure systems in different locations. This cloud service can provide security across a variety of platforms, making it unnecessary for organizations to install security solutions locally and undertake maintenance routines per device.
Additionally, SASE delivers edge-centric security. This means that it brings security enforcement in close proximity to the users and devices, near the edge of the network. Instead of routing all traffic through centralized data centers, security controls are implemented at the edge. This results in significant improvements on latency and performance, ensuring faster responses to threats or attacks. This also infers the possibility of continuous threat monitoring and response. SASE platforms can include advanced capabilities to detect and remediate threats by continuously tracking network traffic and user behavior.
Moreover, SASE helps achieve optimized WAN connectivity while securing connections. It integrates software-defined wide area networking (SD-WAN) to dynamically choose the most efficient network paths based on the network conditions and what the apps require, ensuring the quality of connections between users and apps. This ensures consistent access to resources even in remote branch locations, which is important as the IT infrastructure of organizations keeps broadening  with the adoption of new technologies and expansion of operations.
Implementing zero-trust security
SASE is also associated with zero-trust security, a crucial cybersecurity principle designed to combat the evolving sophistication of modern cyber threats. Security posture management systems that include SASE implement security scanning mechanisms that take away any presumption of regularity. No access or resource request is considered safe regardless of who makes the request. Everything is examined for possible anomalies or indications of malicious action.
Also, the zero-trust principle comes with the enforcement of the principle of least privilege, wherein the access privileges granted are always kept at a minimum. Users are only given the exact level of access or privileges they need to complete specific tasks to make sure that privileges are not abused or exploited especially in insider attacks.
Security without performance compromises
Secure Access Server Edge provides protection that competently addresses existing and emerging threats. Its cloud-native nature makes it suitable for the IT infrastructure of most modern organizations. The integration of multiple security tools under a unified interface simplifies the management of multiple security solutions while maximizing their impact on an organization’s overall security posture. Also, its edge-centric security approach makes it highly scalable and flexible and the implementation of zero-trust security makes SASE in-tune with the cybersecurity best practices at present. Importantly, SASE delivers all of these without having a noticeable impact on network performance.

Day 14: fantasy AU
Tumblr media
Masterlist flufftober 🎃
This is a bit (too) long, but I honestly loved writing it. I hope you like it as much as I do, it's my favorite so far!
Living as a magical creature was undoubtedly difficult. But being born a witch was practically a death sentence.
You couldn’t boast that your kind had ever been fully accepted by society, but at least you could live in peace with others, and perhaps, out of fear, they wouldn’t dare harm you. But now, everything was different with the institution of a new system that aimed to completely exterminate you.
There were no longer safe places, and you were forced to retreat into the forest, stay united in covens, or the boldest among you faced the enemy. Treating you as a threat only turned you into one, sparking an unprecedented war where the king’s men used all sorts of devices to hunt, torture, and kill witches. On your side, you practiced every spell you knew, cursing them sometimes and even causing entire towns to suffer the consequences.
It was so sad to witness the feud and know that someday you could be the one standing on that stake that had taken so many lives or hanging with your feet floating above the ground as a demonstration of what they were capable of doing: a warning.
You doubted that you could ever kill someone out of spite. Your work had always been about healing, and up until that moment, you hadn’t allowed dark magic to corrupt you in any way, adhering to your principle that magic should only be used for altruistic purposes or, at worst, in self-defense.
However, that didn’t exempt you from fearing the men tasked with hunting you. You used to travel between towns to sell your healing potions, always careful not to be spotted by anyone who might turn you in. Sometimes, you worked for free for families too poor to afford other services. After all, magic was more effective. It was always more effective, both for good and for evil.
The fireplace burned softly inside your cabin, just enough to warm you but not enough to attract the attention of those who passed through the forest. Honestly, being there sometimes felt like living in a cave. You had covered the few windows to avoid being seen, and to counteract the lack of light, you had placed candles throughout the space.
You were preparing a stew for dinner with vegetables you had bought that afternoon in a neighboring town when a knock at the door startled you. The knocks weren’t aggressive but not timid either, and you quickly ran to extinguish most of the candles, hoping whoever was behind the door would go away. No one found your place by accident, so it had to be an intruder. If it were another witch, you would have felt it.
"I know you're in there," said a voice behind the wood. It was deep, and fortunately, not unfamiliar to you. "Let me in, I don’t want anyone else noticing I’m here."
Fearful but determined, you walked to the door to do as he asked. Suddenly, you remembered how the man always complained that your footsteps made no sound, something you found useful all the time.
Before opening, you discreetly peeked through a crack in the wood to make sure no one else was with him. Having a witch hunter at your door was bad enough; more of them would be catastrophic.
You pulled the handle of the old wood to reveal your guest, and he silently walked inside.
You had never met a man as strange as Reid, the witch hunter. You first saw each other during a skirmish you hadn’t planned to be part of but unfortunately ended up involved in. Your role wasn’t to attack anyone; instead, you helped your injured companions. At some point during the altercation, the man managed to catch you, and, scared but determined not to let him discover who you were, you tried to escape. He attempted to put a pair of shackles on you, but you fought back with all your strength. Although you tried to cast a spell, the man was intelligent. His hands strategically held you to prevent any of your movements, and he was strong enough that you couldn’t overpower him.
“Witch, it’ll be worse if you resist…”
You didn’t know if he said that to convince you or out of frustration from the struggle you were giving him, but you didn’t want to find out either. You bit the hand within your reach, and though he groaned, he didn’t release you entirely. When one of your feet touched the ground, giving you more stability, you kicked him in the stomach, forcing him to let you go.
You tried to run, but the man was an expert. He quickly reached for his sword, still sheathed at his waist. You looked him in the eye and regretted being in this situation. You didn’t want to hurt him, but it was kill or be killed.
Suddenly, you noticed hesitation in him, as if he didn’t want to do anything but capture you. His long hair was tangled, and his face was smeared with blood: you didn’t want to know if it was his or one of the women’s.
A crash echoed, and in a split second, a flash of blue light shot through the air, hitting the hunter’s shoulder in front of you. A few inches to the side, and it probably would have killed him instantly.
He collapsed to the ground, dropping his sword to use his hand to try to stop the blood pouring out in torrents. You stood in shock, watching him for a few seconds, stunned by the deep pain on his face. However, there was something else: it looked like hate, but if you looked closely, it was fear. No one wants to die, and in that gaze, there was fear of passing to the other life.
What could you do in that case? The wisest thing would have been to run away and leave him to his fate, but you hesitated for a second. Was that really the right thing to do? He had tried to capture you, but after all, he was a man, a soul.
Cautiously but without wasting time, you stumbled to his side, kneeling, and extended your hands over his body, covered by a leather jacket, pressing on the wound.
“Leave me alone!”
“Shut up, I’m trying to save your life,” you scolded him.
You began to recite a spell, and although he tried to move, the pain wouldn’t let him. Little by little, he felt the burning sensation diminishing, along with the feeling of his blood gushing out.
Reid was an expert at remembering faces. Thanks to that, his team of hunters often managed to catch witches, even if they moved from place to place. While you worked, he focused on observing you. Your face was smudged with soot, and you had a small cut at the hairline, but other than that, you were fairly easy to recognize. Your brows were furrowed with concern, and he wondered what kind of crazy person you were to be helping him, even though he had been about to condemn you minutes earlier.
When the pain was completely gone, leaving only a red stain, you knew you were vulnerable again, so you quickly got up to move away from the man. You didn’t know how long you ran, but the memory of the tears streaming down your face, thinking about abandoning your own kind, was etched in your memory.
The second time you saw each other was a complete accident. You had gone to town to stock up on some materials you needed, carefully buying from different vendors so that no one could accuse you of practicing witchcraft, when you bumped into someone. Before you could apologize, you saw that golden insignia worn by the most prestigious hunters, and as soon as you looked up, you both recognized each other instantly.
You didn’t hesitate to turn and run in the opposite direction, knocking into some people along the way. A few meters ahead, he caught up to you, grabbing your arm and dragging you into a secluded alley.
“Don’t kill me,” was the first thing you said, looking at him with an involuntary pleading expression.
Thanks to the daylight, you could observe him better and noticed the hardness in his features. He was intimidating, no doubt, and you understood why there were enough reasons to consider him dangerous.
“Why did you help me?”
There was a gruffness in his question that made it sound as if he were angry. Was he offended that he had been saved by the enemy? Or did he want to know your reasons before sending you to die?
He still held one of your hands tightly, fully aware that most spells required both your hands. There was silence for a moment as you stared at each other until you dared to speak.
“I don’t know.”
“I tried to capture you.”
“I know,” you replied just as seriously. He still hadn’t let you go. “But it’s my job. I help others. And I didn’t want the guilt of having left you lying there, although now that I think about it, it probably would’ve been the smarter thing to do.”
“You could’ve let me die, but you didn’t,” he murmured, almost as if talking to himself rather than to you “You didn’t.”
He sounded incredulous, as if the idea of an act of kindness from you was unimaginable. You remained very still, waiting for him to do something, and after a few seconds, he released your wrist.
“Go,” he said again. “It’s a life for a life.”
Without thinking too much about what he was offering you, you fled once more, and you didn’t stop until you reached the forest, completely forgetting the reason you had gone there in the first place. You would buy the ingredients elsewhere, what mattered most now was getting as far away from that hunter as possible.
As if by fate, you continued to run into each other, and each time your panicked glances were ignored by him, as if by not looking directly at you, he was giving you a chance to escape. Months passed this way, and at some point, you found him at your cabin door when you returned from the town.
You thought this would be your end and cursed yourself for not letting him die, sealing your tragic fate. However, he wasn’t there to capture you but to make a deal. You couldn’t believe it. After all, since when did hunters negotiate with witches?
“You’re something like a healer, aren’t you?” he asked once he had forced you inside the cabin so you wouldn’t be discovered.
“I am.”
“And do you know how to treat head troubles?” he asked curiously “You know, things doctors can’t?”
You didn’t understand what he wanted, and once again, you felt afraid. The enemy knew where you lived; he was standing in your home, not pinning you against a wall to immobilize you. He was seeking your help, which you had every right to refuse if you wished.
“You’re a witch hunter,” you muttered aloud, your tone bordering on disgust “What does it matter if I can do that?”
If you were going to die, you wanted to do it with integrity.
“Listen, I can offer you something in exchange for your help. I can protect you. If I hadn’t kept quiet, my companions would have already found and killed you because no detail escapes me. If I figure it out, my whole team knows, but on their own, they won’t be able to decipher it. I’m the one standing between them and you. If I say nothing, you’ll be safe.”
Could you trust his word? What if it was all a trap? A million questions crossed your mind at that moment, and you tried to consider whether the risk was worth the reward. Probably no hunter in history had ever sought help from a witch, and you were sure your kind couldn’t trust ordinary humans.
But despite knowing this, you accepted. After all, your secret was already exposed, and if you refused, you would only hasten the inevitable result. At least by accepting his deal, you bought time. You could live until he decided you were no longer useful, or when his team of hunters wanted to eliminate more witches.
Months had passed since then. That’s how he told you what he was suffering from, and you helped him treat it, giving him various infusions, ointments, and occasionally using some magic directly on him.
“Have you gotten better or worse?”
“I’ve improved. On a scale from one to ten, maybe a seven.”
“Have you followed the instructions I gave you? The therapeutic baths, drinking the drops I gave you, all of that…”
“Yes. Sometimes I don’t have time, but I try.”
Whenever he visited you, neither of you made eye contact. You pretended to be busy preparing things, while he kept analyzing the wood of your table as if it were the most interesting thing in the world.
“Alright. Give me a moment, and I’ll prepare what you need.”
Reid hummed in response, and he stayed calm, drumming his fingers on the surface in front of him. While you mixed ingredients, you glanced at him from the corner of your eye, noticing that he was wearing his characteristic black clothes, but this time he looked more relaxed. No sword or visible weapons. He was only wearing a linen shirt and pants, which made you wonder if the night’s chill would affect him.
Your cabin was exceedingly warm, and although he wouldn’t admit it, there was a comforting feeling upon entering.
“I heard you caught the Green Witch.”
“We did, yes. Just yesterday. By the afternoon, her sentence had already been passed.”
“May the gods receive her with joy, and may she become magical strength for her coven,” you recited, making a gesture similar to crossing yourself.
Reid assumed that this was what you witches said every time one of your kind died.
“Did you know her?”
“Yes. We met a couple of times. She was a bit mad, but not so much that I’d wish her dead.”
“She did a lot of bad things.”
“I know. But years ago, she lived in peace with us.” You fell silent for a moment, waiting for a response. None came. “What you people do to my sisters is completely inhumane. Did you know that?”
“We’re just trying to protect people.”
“Yes, from something that wasn’t dangerous until you decided it was. If you keep telling someone they’re evil long enough, I think you’ll eventually push them into becoming that.”
Admitting it out loud would be a betrayal of the principles on which he worked, but Reid had thought many times about what you had just told him. The first encounter he had with you caused a complete ideological conflict in his mind. The lingering question had started to take shape: What if not all witches were evil?
He had joined the hunters to help achieve a greater good for his people. During those months, he had enjoyed the effects of your remedies, you had taken care of him, and despite who he was, you treated him with respect. He wondered if your behavior was out of fear that he might expose you to the other hunters or if your actions were genuine.
“If I refused to keep helping you…” you began, breaking the silence. He was deep in thought, and your voice brought him back to reality “Would you send me to the stake?”
As you said this, you still didn’t look at him. Focused on your work table, you gave him your back, somehow hoping his response would come directly to that place. You were sure of what he would say, that it would reach you like a stab.
“Are you planning to stop helping me?”
“Would you do it?” you insisted.
Reid thought about it for a moment and decided to answer your question with another.
“Would you be capable of killing me?” When you heard that, you turned with a confused expression. “You have all the means, to be honest. I drink those things you give me without question. Who’s to say you couldn’t be poisoning me?”
“I would never do that.”
“I can’t know that, just as you have doubts, so do I. It’s a matter of trust. Helping me is your choice, I’m just offering the benefit of protection in return. But if one day that agreement breaks, it won’t be me accusing you. If you decide to act wrongly, that’s your responsibility.”
You fell silent, observing him seriously. He was such a strange man.
“So, it’s our fault that we’re sent to die? Without being given the chance to prove we can help you?”
“Don’t think I’m a fool. I know you travel through the villages selling your potions and healing the poor. You’re proving your worth by keeping yourself alive, and that’s why you’re still here. You might live a long life as long as you don’t draw attention.”
“But I’m still a witch in the end. And you’re a hunter. The outcome for that combination is logical and inevitable.”
“And do you think all hunters are monsters?”
“I don’t know. Do you think all of us are evil?”
The two of you fell silent. Neither of you would dare say what you really thought. But there was something in the look you shared that felt hopeful.
Sensing the lack of response, you turned back to your work, and the conversation was over. A few minutes later, you placed three jars, a wooden container with ointment, and a plate of hot stew on the table.
“What’s this?”
“Food. No poison. If you don’t want to join me, then take your remedies, and the door is open.”
You had never invited him to stay longer than necessary, and the proposal felt strange to both of you.
Reid’s silence and his remaining in your home seemed to indicate a positive response, and still without saying anything, you served yourself a plate to join him for dinner. The sound of the fireplace was all that could be heard around you, along with the occasional noises of nature.
Whenever you weren’t paying attention, Reid would look up to observe you, as if you were a puzzle he needed to solve. Similarly, you analyzed his behavior, wondering if this man was worth the risks you were taking. Once, your gazes crossed, but as soon as your eyes met, both of you looked away.
“I should go,” he announced after finishing his meal. He wanted to compliment your cooking skills but couldn’t find the words. “Should I take the medicine the usual way?”
“Yes. The ointment is only if you have a fever.”
“Alright,” he muttered, nodding his head. He needed to leave, but it was as if his feet weren’t responding. “Thanks. For everything.”
For perhaps the first time, Reid saw a smile on your lips, and he took it as a sign of trust.
“Be careful on your way back.”
You didn’t speak of the matter any further, and you tried with all your might not to think about it. But the weeks passed, and you heard no news of Reid. It wasn’t as if you wanted to run into him everywhere, of course, but not knowing anything about him left you feeling strangely uneasy this time.
During one of your visits to town, you overheard rumors and couldn’t help but get curious. Several people were saying the same thing, both villagers and hunters.
"The hunter Reid is sick."
The women recited prayers, and the men expressed their sympathy for him. Apparently, he was a well-liked figure among the villagers, which made you wonder why and, secondly, why he hadn’t come to you for help.
Through whispers, a few questions, and your own deductions, you managed to find out where the man lived, and, trembling, you decided to search for him. Night had already fallen, and you hoped that under the cover of darkness, your identity would remain hidden.
Once you arrived, it wasn’t difficult to open the door, but your main fear was that he might have company, which would ruin everything. You noticed that the place was modest, with just a small hallway, a little room with shelves full of books, and a tiny space for preparing and eating meals. In the back, visible from the entrance, was a room dimly lit by a nearly extinguished candle.
How angry would he be if he found you in his home? In his territory, violating the place he likely considered sacred and safe? A witch in the house of a witch hunter.
He was alone in the room, lying on a small bed pushed against the wall, barely fitting his frame. He looked peaceful, but also visibly worn out, and his cheeks were flushed. You had heard of an illness affecting humans, killing them in large numbers: the plague.
Gently, almost maternally, you brushed his hair away from his forehead to check his temperature. He was burning up with fever.
“Who is it?” he asked hoarsely, barely having the strength to speak. When he cracked his eyes open and saw you, you noticed his transition from drowsiness to alarm.
“It’s me. I’m here. Calm down, you’re not hallucinating,” you murmured. Without wasting time, you searched among his belongings for the ointment you had made for him weeks ago, and without questioning it, you began to apply a layer to his forehead.
“What are you doing here?”
“The whole town is talking about you. I couldn’t help but hear, so I thought I’d come to check if my protection from the gallows was still in place,” you teased lightly.
You were lying. You wanted to see him, and you were worried about him. But you weren’t going to admit that.
“I’m just a little sore. Everyone’s exaggerating.”
“Has anyone given you anything? Food, medicine?”
“Nothing. I don’t want anything.”
“Oh, so you want to go out like a real martyr? Suffering helps you reach heaven, or that’s what you people say, right?”
“Why did you come to see me? How… how did you know where I live?”
He spoke with difficulty, struggling to string his thoughts together, likely because of the illness. He was completely vulnerable before you.
“Do you want me to leave?” you asked first. “Because I can.”
“No offense,” he whispered, fighting to keep his eyes open. “It was just a question”
“Then, do you want me to stay?”
“If you want to, then yes.”
Neither of you would back down. Resigned, you found a chair to sit beside the bed and rummaged through your bag for something that could help him. You had a loaf of bread meant for your cabin and some tea, still warm, that you had bought from a farmer. Despite the hardship you'd face, your will allowed you to offer both to the hunter.
“You need to eat and drink something. Give me a few minutes, and I’ll prepare a potion that will help lessen the symptoms. With that and a little magic, you’ll be well by tomorrow or the day after you won’t even remember being sick.”
“Aren’t you afraid someone will see you?”
“Of course I am. But I trust you’re not so treacherous as to betray me after I’ve risked coming here to help you.”
In that, you were right. And Reid knew it.
Without saying anything, you placed the food and the steaming tea on a little table beside the bed, then went to another area to start your work. Even though you didn’t have all your ingredients with you, you could prepare something decent with the supplies in your bag.
When you returned to the room, he had already devoured half of the bread and nearly finished the tea. You noticed that he was struggling to stay seated, so you encouraged him to lie down again, ready to begin your work.
Reid watched closely as you moved your hands and the faint sparks that appeared each time you twitched your fingers. It seemed as if you were pulling something from within him, and the man’s curious nature emerged.
“What exactly are you doing with that?”
“I’m pulling the illness from your system. Your soul is infected, so I have to cleanse it.”
“And the illness? Where does it go?”
“I absorb it,” you explained. Seeing his disbelief, you continued, “Magic always requires you to give something. That’s why so many witches who use dark magic end up corrupting themselves. Committing evildoings requires absorbing that pain.”
“Have you ever used dark magic?”
Suddenly, the conversation felt kind, intimate, almost like that of a pair of friends... or even lovers. You were terrified but didn’t let him notice.
“No. I practice Wicca: nature grants me power, and I am at peace with it. Without harming others.”
“It’s fascinating to hear someone talk about it. We know how to capture, contain, and kill your kind... I mean, witches. But I never really thought about what you all practice or believe.”
His voice was soft, tired, while you continued your work.
“Do all of you have the same mark?”
His hand reached up to touch your forearm, and you felt a shiver run through your body. His finger rested lightly on your birthmark, a reddish spot.
“Witches who are born with magic do. Well, most of them. For those who turn evil, the mark darkens, and often their fingers start to turn black, as if they have soot on their hands. It’s part of the transformation.”
“And is it true that you’re daughters of the devil?”
You let out a scoff, incredulous, wondering how many more lies had been told to tarnish your people’s image and turn you into monsters.
“We are daughters of Mother Nature, descendants of the oldest magical lineages. We have nothing to do with Lucifer.”
“And how is a witch born? Do you need... to be intimate with someone of your kind?”
“I think that’s a bit too personal of a question,” you murmured disapprovingly. With one final movement, you eliminated the sickness from his soul, and you felt that even his appearance had changed. “Better?”
“A little.”
“You need to drink this all day tomorrow and if possible, the day after. Dissolve it in enough water, and as the hours pass, you’ll notice improvement. But the most important thing now is for you to rest.”
“And where are you going?”
“To my cabin. You don’t expect me to stay in town, do you?”
“The night is dangerous,” he tried to warn, but you responded with a laugh.
“So what? Afraid I’ll run into a witch?”
Reid didn’t miss the teasing tone in your voice, and for a moment, he felt the same connection, that sense of familiarity you had felt before.
“You’ll be fine. Just follow the instructions and find me when you’re better,” you murmured, hoping that would suffice as a farewell.
However, the man stretched out his hand to stop you from leaving, gently taking your fingers. You correctly assumed that no witch had ever received such a soft touch from a hunter, and your breath caught in your throat.
“Why do you insist on proving you’re good?” he asked, reflecting aloud. You looked puzzled by his statement. “You saved my life even though I sought to take yours. You help me stay sane with your herbs, and now you come here and assist me even though no one asked you to.”
“Are you dissatisfied?”
“I’m confused. How am I supposed to capture more witches, knowing they could be like you? That they could be kind, sweet… that they could be so human?”
His monologue seemed more like he was trying to understand things himself, rather than asking you. But if he was recognizing you as human, was he suggesting he saw you as an equal?
You were walking on very thin ice. Ice that could easily crack under the heat of emotions... of passion, and something strange that was brewing inside both of you.
“Just don’t do it,” you said, shrugging your shoulders. Without waiting any longer, afraid that his touch would overwhelm you, you pulled your hand away and walked toward the door. “Keep me updated. If you die, my protection dies too.”
You tried to make your words sound indifferent, but the truth was, they came out with a mixture of concern and plea. Reid felt a sense of pride, thinking that you were implying you needed him. That for one reason or another, you wanted him to stay alive.
“Thank you,” he murmured, delirious. In your heart, you hoped for his recovery, or you would never forgive yourself.
You waved goodbye and then made your way to the door of the house. Luck was on your side, there wasn’t a soul in sight. Cautiously, using those silent steps the hunter often complained about, you walked into the forest and disappeared into the undergrowth.
Throughout the night, perhaps due to fever or perhaps due to desire, Reid dreamed of you.
Tumblr media
The months passed. Everyone was amazed at the sudden recovery of the hunter, and most attributed it to a miracle, not knowing that the magic they so despised had actually saved him.
Apparently, that second act of compassion on your part had softened his heart, and his visits became more frequent, almost always lacking any real purpose. He excused himself by saying that he wanted to learn more about witches, to see if there was a less violent way to deal with those who were evil. You had basically become the subject of his research.
Part of you was terrified at the thought that someone might discover your meetings or that he might dare to use against you all the information you were giving him. However, over time, the trust between you both grew considerably.
Titles had been lost somewhere along the way. Suddenly, you were no longer a witch, and he was no longer a hunter. You were simply two people, curious about discovering the secrets of the other's nature, beginning to learn that perhaps the beliefs you both had grown up with could be wrong.
Reid took it upon himself to warn you every time a hunt was going to start, making sure you didn’t leave your place until it was safe, trying desperately to keep the hunters away from the section of the forest where you lived.
Time was the only culprit for you growing fond of him. You didn’t want to; you never planned for it, but gradually, the feeling crept under your skin, and you couldn’t avoid it. It was terrifying just to think about it.
“It's beautiful, isn’t it?”
Reid was mesmerized by the view in front of him. Your curious friend had asked if it was true that fairies existed since he had never seen one, and you promised to take him to meet them. So, one afternoon, you ended up at a stunning crystal-clear lagoon surrounded by trees, with colorful lights flitting from one side to the other.
“We’ve explored this forest so many times. How come I’ve never seen this?”
“Sometimes, you humans only see what you need to see. The fairies are very protective of their territory, so not just anyone finds them,” you said, smiling slightly.
The idea of him being so excited to meet the fairies surprised you a lot. You had spent so much time with him that your perception of humans had inevitably changed too. Maybe not all of them were destined to hate magical beings… perhaps some could even grow to admire you.
But sometimes, you had mixed feelings about it. He visited you, protected you, trusted you… but he was still a hunter, wasn’t he? He still helped send witches like you to their deaths.
Only the evil ones, he always justified.
“Those little lights… Are they them?”
You hummed in agreement and carefully extended your palms, hoping one of them would approach. When one finally did, Reid was able to see it.
Fairies, contrary to what many humans believed, weren’t tiny, beautiful versions of a person with transparent wings. In reality, fairies were brown-colored creatures with moth-like wings and hair that looked like a bird’s nest.
“Aren’t they curious?”
“Very fascinating,” he admitted, a smile forming on his face. Lately, watching him smile had become one of your favorite activities.
He observed the scenery for a while, trying to register as many details as possible, while you gathered some plants that you would use to prepare potions or infusions.
Seeing you amid nature awakened a strange feeling in Reid. Kneeling, dressed in a white gown that gave you a certain aura of purity, your hair fell like a curtain over your face.
What was that feeling? Why did he feel this way, watching you so peacefully?
You said something, but honestly, Reid didn’t hear you. He was too distracted by the glow of your face and wondering where the little flowers in your hair had come from. It was probably the fairies, he thought, during the time he hadn’t been watching you.
“I asked if you know how to swim,” you repeated with a small smile “There are some who say this lagoon has healing properties. There are nymphs, too, but I haven’t seen any lately. They’re a bit possessive, to be honest.”
“Nymphs?” he asked, astonished, which only made you laugh.
Without saying another word, you set your basket aside, and Reid was shocked to see you start taking off your dress, leaving yourself in nothing but a very thin undergarment that was too indecent to be considered proper. But he couldn’t expect modesty from someone like you; after all, you had already shown that you didn’t follow conventional rules.
You gracefully dove into the lagoon, and Reid watched you disappear into the water, only to resurface a few seconds later.
“Come on!”
Reid hesitated for a minute, but eventually, he gave in and joined you in the water under the same conditions as you: in his underwear.
“Isn’t it wonderful?” you spoke again, floating on your back in the clear water.
You had your eyes closed, as the sun was shining directly on your face, and Reid tried to avert his gaze from the curves of your body, which were now visible through your soaked clothes. He felt slightly embarrassed by the improper thoughts that crossed his mind, thoughts he couldn’t control.
“Swimming?”
“The nature. The village is so gray and sad… everything here is better.”
The man hummed, as if to say that he agreed with you. Suddenly, he felt a couple of fairies fluttering around him, and the movement of their wings tickled him, making him laugh.
“Do mermaids exist?”
“They do, but only in the open sea. You should be careful with the sirens.”
“What’s the difference?”
“Mermaids can be benevolent if they wish. But sirens’ sole task is to seduce sailors and lure them to the bottom of the sea; they attract them with their song and beauty.”
“I didn’t know there were so many creatures I had to worry about, not just witches. No offense.”
“Oh, Reid. You humans are missing out on a whole world,” you teased, swimming right up to him “The difference is that witches don’t try to seduce you. We’re a bit more practical.”
“That would be a good strategy.”
“Do you want a witch to seduce you?” you asked, tilting your head slightly to one side to look at him.
“No! I mean… using beauty to attract people with reason might be effective. I suppose.”
“Unfortunately, there aren’t too many candidates who interest us. Most of them are grouchy, horrible old men. Although, well… there are always exceptions to the rule.”
Were you flirting with him? From the way you were looking at him, he thought it was entirely possible.
“Anyway, all it would take to make a man fall for us is putting a bit of love potion in his tea. It wouldn’t be hard.”
“Now I understand why my tea tastes weird lately.”
There was something unspoken in your teasing, something suggestive, even sinful. Yes, because the idea that a witch and a witch hunter could have that kind of tension was ridiculous. Unthinkable.
You both stared at each other for a second, waiting for the other to say something, but that didn’t happen.
“Are our things still where we left them? There are goblins in this forest too, and they tend to be quite mischievous.”
“They are,” he quickly answered.
You smiled and, with a nod of your head, invited him to follow you, then began swimming in an unknown direction.
You chatted for a while as you swam, and little by little, the sky turned orange, signaling that sunset was approaching. You were in an area surrounded by grass, where more fairies sparkled around than Reid had ever seen before, making the atmosphere visually stunning.
“We should head back. They might wonder where you are,” you suggested, glancing at the sky “Tonight is a full moon. A perfect occasion for a human sacrifice, and I don’t want any speculation.”
Your tone was playful, and just as he was about to respond, everything suddenly seemed to slow down. Behind you, there was a whirlpool in the water, and by the time he tried to warn you, it was too late. The natural phenomenon swallowed you up immediately, almost as if your body were in free fall.
Reid was seized by panic. His area of expertise didn’t involve bodies of water, but he knew how dangerous a whirlpool could be, as it could cause you to drown.
Without wasting time, he dove underwater and spent almost a painful minute trying to grab one of your limbs to pull you toward him. When he finally succeeded, your body was heavy and limp, making him fear the worst.
When he managed to resurface, he swam with you to the shore, carefully laying you down. While lying next to you, he called your name several times, moving your head to get you to respond, but nothing happened.
“Come on! Wake up!” he urged, his voice filled with evident desperation.
Suddenly, he remembered some of his knowledge of the human body and, albeit fearfully, began pressing on your chest to try to expel the water from your lungs. Every few compressions, he leaned in to give you mouth-to-mouth, hoping it would be enough to revive you.
When he finally heard you gasp and saw you roll onto your side to vomit all the water, he felt a wave of relief wash over him.
“Are you okay?”
“What happened?” you asked, disoriented.
Reid was nearly hovering over you, holding your cheeks with both hands as if to assess your condition, his honey-colored eyes locked onto yours.
“A whirlpool. I tried to warn you, but it already had you.”
“Oh…” you exhaled, still coughing a bit. It took you a second to process it “And you saved me?”
“Of course. Who else would it be?” he muttered, almost in a reproachful tone.
A small smile crossed your lips.
“So, is this going to become a habit? Saving each other’s lives?”
It wasn’t until that moment that you both became aware of how close you were. His wet body was pressed against yours, and Reid could feel your chest firmly against his. He was still holding your cheeks.
You stared at each other. His eyes, his beautiful and gentle eyes, were fixed on yours. Just breathing a little heavier would have allowed you to feel each other’s breath, your noses practically brushing.
Once again, you faced a dilemma. You could have gotten rid of him a long time ago. Not once, but many times. And he could have done the same without consequences. But that was never your intention; it was useless to keep pretending.
And then, it just happened. It felt natural for both of you to lean in and close the distance, sealing your lips together without any need for explanation.
Your kisses said it all. They said: I care about you. They said: I was afraid I was going to lose you. They said: I know you’re not evil like the others. And they said: I know you’re not ruthless like them.
Suddenly, the contact didn’t seem to be enough, and Reid positioned himself over you to continue kissing you, with no protest from your side. You could feel the heat beneath you, and he undoubtedly felt the same. His free hand firmly gripped your side, almost massaging the soft parts of your torso. You held him tightly, your fingers tangled in the wet curls of his hair.
And so, within a matter of minutes, you both gave in to the unrestrained passion that had been growing inside you for the past few months.
He was good to you, careful. You reciprocated, caressing him gracefully and whispering sweet words in his ear.
The thin ice you had both been walking on didn’t even exist anymore. It had shattered at that moment, and all that remained was an intense fire engulfing the both of you.
You just had to be careful that a heat like that didn’t turn into a pyre.

Comment in the Standard: How dare Montecito millionaire Prince Harry demand our tax money to cover his legal costs
This subject matter cannot be covered too much for my taste.
Tumblr media
Emphasis and comments by me:
Prince Harry’s latest court defeat in his rightly unsuccessful bid to overturn the decision to refuse him guaranteed Met police protection after he pulled out of royal duties might seem like a trivial battle over legal fees.
But in fact the duke’s failed attempt to pass 50 to 60 per cent of the costs incurred by the Home Office in fighting his unmerited claim tells us much about the preening prince and his selfish disregard for virtually anyone other than himself, his equally self-obsessed wife, Meghan Markle, and his children. [No one else matters of course. It is all about them.]
That’s because when the Duke of Sussex, as he still wants to be called despite ditching his royal role, wasted yet more of the High Court’s time in arguing for the taxpayer to fund at least half of the hundreds of thousands of pounds that the Home Office was forced to spend on the case, what he was really doing was trying to pass on a large chunk of the bill to ordinary taxpayers. [Sponging off others is quite on brand.
That’s right: instead of having the decency to accept that he’d have to pay up when he lost, the Montecito multimillionaire, for whom the legal expenses will be loose change, wanted taxes paid by everyone ranging from people on the minimum wage to bus drivers, cleaners and pensioners to cover his costs. It’s frankly contemptible. [Does he think it is his birthright to have the peasants pay for his temper tantrums?]
It's notable too that yesterday’s costs order by the High Court judge, Sir Peter Lane, reveals that Harry, who is so protective of his own privacy (when it suits him), managed to breach a confidentiality agreement made as part of the litigation by emailing “certain information” that was meant to be secret to one his lawyers and the MP Johnny Mercer. The prince might have apologised for the error, but the costs order refers to the “seriousness of the breach” and it was at best a sloppy mistake that added to the Home Office costs that he was trying to avoid. [What were you up to Harold?]
Harry’s whole case was, of course, misconceived from the start and it’s worth recapping why.
He asserted that the decision in 2020 by security experts on the Government’s Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures, known as Ravec, that he should no longer receive publicly-funded police protection in Britain because of his move abroad should be overturned.
The supposed reasons were that the committee had allegedly failed to take into account the impact of a successful attack on the prince and had also acted unreasonably, unfairly and with a lack of transparency.
It was nonsense for the prince to think that he knew better than a panel of experts informed by the latest security advice from the police and intelligence agencies. [This man has a very high opinion of himself.] The High Court unsurprisingly dismissed Harry’s claim on all grounds, finding that there was no reason to overturn the Ravec panel’s decision. It had in fact left open the possibility of occasional police protection for the prince when in Britain, if there was evidence in future of a sufficient threat to his safety.
An attempt by the prince to persuade the courts that a later offer by him to pay for police protection should have been accepted was also rebuffed. Yet another judge dragged into Harry’s interminable litigation ruled it would be wrong to allow the wealthy to receive a service from the limited pool of specialist Met protection officers that a less affluent person could not afford.
That too was the correct and inevitable decision. Police protection officers are highly skilled specialists, trained at significant public expense, who exist only in restricted numbers and who are required to safeguard those facing the highest risks such as working royals, Cabinet ministers and prime ministers current and former, not others like Harry wanting the comfort blanket of protection they don’t need.
In short, every argument put forward by Harry was flawed and rejected by the courts. It’s a sign of his delusion that even the succession of earlier rebuffs from the judiciary didn’t stop him basing his attempt to get off a big chunk of the Home Office’s costs in fighting the litigation on the fantasy claim that he’d achieved “partial success” in his legal action. [He learns nothing from his experiences.]
Maybe that was how Harry viewed it. After he all, he told the world in his biography Spare that “there's just as much truth in what I remember and how I remember it as there is in so-called objective facts”.
But it simply wasn’t true, as yesterday’s High Court costs order reminded him.
It pointed out that Harry had “comprehensively lost” and that there was “no merit” in his claim of partial victory with his judicial review argument failing “on all of the pleaded grounds.” [Harold is a big loser.]
It was the obvious outcome from the start and the claim should never have been brought. His inevitable defeat was deserved and now it’s time for the penny-pinching prince to pay up.

Could i request Love language hcs for heartslabyul? Thank you 😊 💓
Ace Trappola:
Give: Words of Affirmation.
He's such an honest person you know that if he's praising you, it's genuine. Ace is actually a far better listener than you give him credit for and he proves that he has some sort of emotional intelligence when he managed to pinpoint the things you were most self-conscious about; if it was something you were actively changing, he'd make it clear that he'd be by your side and that he knew you could make it through anything just because you're you.
Receive: Quality Time.
Ace really does want a partner he can just do fun things with. You don’t have to have everything in common, but he does want to be able to run off and do something at a moments notice. The nights where you go out with no destination in mind and end up with a new favorite eatery or shoe store or park to play around in are his absolute favorites, the kind of nights he’d be happy to look back on when you were both too old to do anything considered spontaneous anymore.
Cater Diamond:
Give: Physical Touch.
It’s pretty easy to him, though most of it is mimicry at first. He’s good at playing the doting boyfriend, brushing hair out of your face and having an arm draped around your shoulder when you’re in bigger groups of people (and he doesn’t want to get separated from you). When you do request that he only touch you in the way he wants to, he still plays with your hair, but he much prefers having your pinkys hooked or snuggling only when it’s the two of you.
Receive: Off camera Quality Time.
Cater likes being around you, and he wants you to like being around him whether there’s a camera there or not. He can’t quite get rid of the habit of taking pictures of everything but he does grow to learn that there’s magical moments that a picture can’t capture. Helping him live in the moment and maybe even indulge in moments that shouldn’t be on camera, like skinny dipping in a nearby lake with your hair getting all messed up and make-up dripping down your faces—might not be a good photo, but Cater can’t help but think you were as beautiful as ever.
Deuce Space:
Give: Acts of Service.
He’s a little better at being ordered around to do things rather than picking it up himself, but he’s not completely remiss when it comes to taking care of things around the house. You always did enjoy watching him work on machinery but that’s not all he’s good for—He actually finds some peace in cleaning the house if you’re out for the day doing something else, showing great pride when you come home to find the place sparkling.
Receive: Words of Affirmation.
It’s not something he can articulate well, and he’s certainly not good with words, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t like being reassured. He’s always wanted you to be honest with him about your relationship and if he needs to be doing more for you, so hearing compliment after compliment can have him soaring on cloud nine. He never knew words could have such a great effect on people but your praise has made it clear how you view him.
Riddle Rosehearts:
Give: Words of Affirmation/Acts of Service.
Riddle wants you to be your best self. He wants to motivate you to achieve your dreams and he never wants you to stop learning, because life was about a constant stream of new information becoming pertinent to the world. You would continue learning and evolving outside of NRC and Riddle wanted to go along with you on that journey. Hearing him praise your intelligence or learning a new skill, or even having him learn a new skill alongside you, is something he does as he learned people are more motivated by praise than threats.
Receive: Quality Time.
He thinks it’s important for a couple to be around each other, and to not fight or snip at each other every moment. He enjoyed having conversations with you, hearing your opinions on this or that, or sharing new knowledge you had learned in your own life that he might never have discovered if it weren’t for you. It’s important to him that you communicate in a meaningful way and that you have activities you can enjoy together, like tea time.
Trey Clover:
Give: Gift-Giving.
He can be an Acts of Service type of lover too, he really just likes to use his hands and do things for you to display his love. He’s not bad with words but he feels like he can come across poorly, especially when he’s annoyed and needs that little moment to himself. But he’s always got you in mind, baking little snacks that he knows you like, making dinner on a night when it’s your turn, and he’s not above buying you a little treat that he knows you would appreciate. He just prefers going with the homemade method, so he might even learn how to sew or do some crafts.
Receive: Acts of Service.
He just likes when you go out of your way to help him out, it always makes him feel loved when he left something a mess to clean up the next day and when he’s down in the kitchen again he discovered you got to it first. Picking up chores when you know he’s got a lot of orders, helping him handle the finances, even offering a helping hand in the kitchen or acting as cashier in the bakery—he appreciated all of those things and expressed his gratitude at the end of every day.

An Introduction to Cybersecurity
I created this post for the Studyblr Masterpost Jam, check out the tag for more cool masterposts from folks in the studyblr community!
What is cybersecurity?
Cybersecurity is all about securing technology and processes - making sure that the software, hardware, and networks that run the world do exactly what they need to do and can't be abused by bad actors.
The CIA triad is a concept used to explain the three goals of cybersecurity. The pieces are:
Confidentiality: ensuring that information is kept secret, so it can only be viewed by the people who are allowed to do so. This involves encrypting data, requiring authentication before viewing data, and more.
Integrity: ensuring that information is trustworthy and cannot be tampered with. For example, this involves making sure that no one changes the contents of the file you're trying to download or intercepts your text messages.
Availability: ensuring that the services you need are there when you need them. Blocking every single person from accessing a piece of valuable information would be secure, but completely unusable, so we have to think about availability. This can also mean blocking DDoS attacks or fixing flaws in software that cause crashes or service issues.
What are some specializations within cybersecurity? What do cybersecurity professionals do?
incident response
digital forensics (often combined with incident response in the acronym DFIR)
reverse engineering
cryptography
governance/compliance/risk management
penetration testing/ethical hacking
vulnerability research/bug bounty
threat intelligence
cloud security
industrial/IoT security, often called Operational Technology (OT)
security engineering/writing code for cybersecurity tools (this is what I do!)
and more!
Where do cybersecurity professionals work?
I view the industry in three big chunks: vendors, everyday companies (for lack of a better term), and government. It's more complicated than that, but it helps.
Vendors make and sell security tools or services to other companies. Some examples are Crowdstrike, Cisco, Microsoft, Palo Alto, EY, etc. Vendors can be giant multinational corporations or small startups. Security tools can include software and hardware, while services can include consulting, technical support, or incident response or digital forensics services. Some companies are Managed Security Service Providers (MSSPs), which means that they serve as the security team for many other (often small) businesses.
Everyday companies include everyone from giant companies like Coca-Cola to the mom and pop shop down the street. Every company is a tech company now, and someone has to be in charge of securing things. Some businesses will have their own internal security teams that respond to incidents. Many companies buy tools provided by vendors like the ones above, and someone has to manage them. Small companies with small tech departments might dump all cybersecurity responsibilities on the IT team (or outsource things to a MSSP), or larger ones may have a dedicated security staff.
Government cybersecurity work can involve a lot of things, from securing the local water supply to working for the big three letter agencies. In the U.S. at least, there are also a lot of government contractors, who are their own individual companies but the vast majority of what they do is for the government. MITRE is one example, and the federal research labs and some university-affiliated labs are an extension of this. Government work and military contractor work are where geopolitics and ethics come into play most clearly, so just… be mindful.
What do academics in cybersecurity research?
A wide variety of things! You can get a good idea by browsing the papers from the ACM's Computer and Communications Security Conference. Some of the big research areas that I'm aware of are:
cryptography & post-quantum cryptography
machine learning model security & alignment
formal proofs of a program & programming language security
security & privacy
security of network protocols
vulnerability research & developing new attack vectors
Cybersecurity seems niche at first, but it actually covers a huge range of topics all across technology and policy. It's vital to running the world today, and I'm obviously biased but I think it's a fascinating topic to learn about. I'll be posting a new cybersecurity masterpost each day this week as a part of the #StudyblrMasterpostJam, so keep an eye out for tomorrow's post! In the meantime, check out the tag and see what other folks are posting about :D

Elon Musk is a ‘promoter of evil,’ EU rule-of-law chief says
BRUSSELS — Elon Musk, unlike other tech bosses, "is not able to recognize good and evil,” a European Union top official said Wednesday.
The multibillionaire tech mogul and boss of X, Tesla and SpaceX is amplifying hatred, outgoing European Commission Vice President Věra Jourová told POLITICO in an interview, calling him a “promoter of evil.”
Musk has been on a collision course with European officials, fighting regulators and governments on multiple fronts. The tech mogul bought Twitter in April 2022, rebranding it as X shortly after, and he has attracted criticism for his management of the platform, with European politicians and civil society saying he has allowed hate speech to fester on the site.
“We started to relativize evil, and he's helping it proactively. He's the promoter of evil,” Jourová said.
The Czech politician, who was the EU’s justice chief from 2014-2019 and has been in charge of “values and transparency” since 2019, has had regular contact with many of the world’s largest technology companies over the last decade on issues like privacy, disinformation and content moderation.
Big tech companies have “monstrous power in their hands,” Jourová said. “I'm really scared by digital platforms in bad hands."
X is “the main hub for spreading antisemitism now,” Jourová said, adding that she warned ministers from EU capitals on Tuesday to be vigilant to the possibility of online antisemitism spilling over into the real world.
“Now we are in the situation where the member states’ law enforcement powers have to protect the people who are under threat, under physical threat,” she said. “This is what I mean ... This new chapter, new intensity of antisemitism, where we don't see sufficient action from the side of the platforms.”
Jourová has never met Musk in person, but said that “even without this personal meeting, I would say that out of all the bosses I met, he is the only one who is not able to recognize good and evil.”
The EU’s former internal market chief Thierry Breton did meet Musk in California in 2022, and since clashed with him publicly over Musk’s approach to online content moderation.
X did not respond to a request for comment.
Regulation vs. innovation
Jourová also dismissed the increasingly popular narrative that Brussels' overregulation has stifled tech innovation.
The EU passed a raft of digital legislation over the last five years, leading some of the world’s largest technology companies to argue that they cannot launch AI tools and other innovative products in the bloc because they don’t know how the new laws work together or how they will be enforced.
But innovation for innovation’s sake is not necessarily desirable, Jourová said: “We have to be sure that the innovations are developed to do good to people.”
She said she wondered why innovation was typically "described as something absolutely good, [and] regulations as something which is bad … It's not black and white."
Big tech companies’ vast profits should not be at the expense of Europeans, Jourová said — even if that means product-launch delays. “Nobody says that Google and others cannot introduce new technologies in Europe. Maybe, one, two months, half a year later than somewhere else, but we want to be sure,” she said.
Jourová led work on the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), a landmark privacy regime that went into force in 2018 and remains one of the EU’s most famous — and infamous — laws.
Though the EU recently passed the Artificial Intelligence Act, the Digital Services Act and the Digital Markets Act, the GDPR often remains the main target of tech companies' ire, particularly because of how it is interpreted. The question of whether the law will need to be changed in the next five years is a key issue for incoming Commission tech chief Henna Virkkunen, Jourová said.
“I think in [terms of] GDPR, we will have to look again at how to better enforce under the principle of one continent, one law,” she said.
Jourová, who is leaving Brussels after 10 years at the Berlaymont, joked that she was returning to Prague as a “dissident,” given she left her own ANO party, which has turned more illiberal under former Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš.
The return of the Euroskeptic Babiš, who is currently leading the polls ahead of next year's Czech election, would strengthen the illiberal forces in the EU, given Babiš’ ties to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
Jourová dismissed rumors that she would start her own political movement to take on her former boss. Instead, she will return to her alma mater, Charles University in Prague, in a management and teaching role.

Monster Spotlight: Implacable Stalker
Tumblr media
+2 CR
Any creature with an Intelligence of 3 or higher; usually an Outsider, Humanoid, or Monstrous Humanoid
Horror Adventures, pg. 238-239
Bit of a different one today; rather than a monster, this is actually a little review of a monster Template, something we’ve just barely spoken of on this blog, and often as one being offered as a reward for divine service. A Template is a bunch of stats and abilities that can be stapled onto any existing monster to give it some extra zing, doing everything from allowing a DM to give their favorite monster some new tactics to giving out new surprises to familiar monsters that every player thinks they know how to counter. Templates are great “plug and play” ways to add extra threat to an existing encounter, often doing in just 1 or 2 extra CR what would normally require 6 or 7 class levels. I highly recommend them!
Granted, the players suffering from recurring nightmares about their encounter with the Implacable Stalker likely won’t be as enthusiastic about the whole thing, but what were they expecting going to the Lake of Crystals, or buying property in Faddonhield? Really, it’s their fault.
Putting this under a cut because it got a little longer than I thought it would!
The Implacable Stalker Template turns any monster it’s slapped onto into the quintessential nigh-invincible slasher movie villain, giving them a pile of stats and skill bonuses (most notably +8 to Intimidation checks, which is important), an immense number of defensive abilities (DR 5/--! 10 points of Resistance to every element!!), and a bunch of tools that are literally Pathfinder translations of horror movie narrative convenience! What do I mean by that? Well, first off, do you know how in slasher movies, people seem to lose all semblance of problem solving ability once the killer is near? That’s displayed by the Stalker’s Fear Aura, which causes any and all creatures with 5 or less HD to automatically become frightened if they come within 60ft of the horror. A successful save doesn’t negate the fear entirely, causing them to become shaken instead. Any creature with more than 5 HD is slightly less afraid; success on their save renders them protected from the aura’s effects, and failure only causes them to become shaken. However, leaving and then re-entering the Stalker’s aura forces another save; there’s no 24 hour immunity! Don’t run away and come back to try and save anyone, you fool! Then again, the more likely scenario is that you run until you think you’re safe, only for it to eventually catch up.
It’ll take a while to do that, though. In a move I find hysterical but also fitting, a Stalker’s movespeed is dropped by 10ft (to a minimum of 20), so it always moves slower than a human running away from it at full speed, giving it the menacing yet inexorable stroll of famous killers... And just like Jason Voorhees in the increasingly terrible sequels, no matter how far away you get or how many barriers you put between yourself and the killer, as soon as no one’s looking at the Stalker it turns out it’s Right Behind You, having teleported upwards to 480ft to any point adjacent to a creature it’s aware of that’s suffering from any level of fear (shaken, frightened, or panicked). This teleportation is a swift action it can use every 1d6 rounds, allowing the Stalker to use its full attack against whatever victim it’s just jumpscared and more than likely ripping them to pieces.
To really set the mood for an Implacable Stalker, I recommend a DM place several disposable red-shirt NPCs along with the party, allowing them to be picked off one by one by the Stalker or taken out by its jumpscare. Make sure, however, that at least one of the deaths happens ‘on screen,’ i.e. where the party can see it, because the Stalker can use its swift action to put on a Gory Display every time it manages to slay a creature. This horrific showing of violence can either enhance the horror’s Str and Con for a short time, restore a chunk of HP to it, give it back one of its expended spell-likes... or cause a single creature within 60ft (which it doesn’t even have to be aware of) to lose any fear immunity it may have. This last one is important if you want it to be a real threat, because otherwise a Paladin or caster with Unbreakable Heart or a party with the humble Calm Emotions can ignore half the Implacable Stalker’s kit.
Circling back to the “horror movie narrative convenience” and combining it with “half the stalker’s kit,” we have the slasher’s ability to sniff out its victims no matter where they’re hiding, except in Pathfinder it’s called Sense Fear. This radius of 120ft detection allows the Stalker to precisely target the exact spot a creature suffering from any level of fear is hiding in, allowing it to teleport to them or threateningly trundle towards them... or pretend to have lost them, only to burst through whatever barrier they thought was safe. Sense Fear even works through most barriers, allowing the Stalker to wait on the other side of a wall to smash through it and grab anyone it finds.
And of course, slashers are always significantly stronger until the Final Girl finally gets over her fear and attacks it back... but until then, every additional character is just another point of weakness. The Implacable Stalker is already tremendously hard to put down, getting +6 Con from the Template, along with Toughness for even more extra HP and a jaw-dropping +6 extra natural armor, but the Terrifying Inevitability of the horror cranks it from “resilient” to “juggernaut” so long as it can see or hear a creature suffering any level of fear. Terrifying Inevitability doubles its insurmountable DR from 5 to 10, gives it an enormous amount of Spell Resistance (16 + its CR), and grants it Fast Healing equal to its Hit Dice, assuring the fearful fool it has at its mercy won’t deal any lasting damage, if they deal damage at all.
I’m recommending the Stalker template with the understanding that it has a VERY good chance of making an encounter unfun rather than exhilarating or terrifying, so use it very carefully, and don’t just drop it on players like a random encounter; build it up, make an environment and a whole setting for it, and make sure players have some method to escape it or finally, heroically fight back against it. Perhaps finding a scroll of Calm Emotions is what allows the party to turn the tides against it? Not only does the suppression of fear prevent the Stalker from turning up Right Behind You, but shuts off its Terrifying Inevitability and prevents it from detecting invisible or hiding creatures with Sense Fear, allowing the party to get the jump on it and finally kill it for good.
Just make sure you double-tap it. Like all good slashers, there’s always a chance it’ll get in one final jumpscare due to its Diehard feat! And worse, it may still live on via Nightmare Resurrection, haunting every victim who witnessed its death for weeks on end via terrifying, traumatic nightmares until they succeed three saves... or the Implacable Stalker comes back, returned to life and full health just in time for the sequel.
You can read more about it here.

hello, I was wondering what your head cannon was on the ahm tal? Also may I ask what your head cannon was, if I didn't already, about the andorians in the andorian incident?
Thank you.
Hello again! <3
We'll start with the Am Tal, I think. This is another long one, so details below the cut.
PART 1: The Am Tal
The Am Tal (or Ahm Tal) is effectively the Andorian secret service - their equivalent to the Romulan Tal Shiar, the Vulcan V'Shar, and Earth's Section 31. Canon lore on them is sparse, naturally, but what is there tells us this:
The organization was founded in 1935 on the Andorian colony world of Cimera III. After the founding of the United Federation of Planets, the Am Tal often collaborated with Starfleet Intelligence and the Federation Intelligence Service, both officially and behind-the-scenes, but at all times the Am Tal operated independently of both. Am Tal agents working black-ops would sometimes pass on information to those more visible agencies as "anonymous sources." The Am Tal did not confine their activities to Andorian territory, contrary to what Federation Intelligence Services/Starfleet Intelligence once believed. They performed whatever operations were deemed essential to the welfare of Andoria and her people throughout the Alpha and Beta Quadrants, up to and including black-ops and wet work. They were regarded as brutally efficient, ruthlessly determined, and they were feared almost as much as the Tal Shiar. A "boogeyman" among the intelligence services, foreign spies, double agents, terrorists and others they deemed as threats would simply "disappear" when the Ahm Tal were around. Andorian citizens often attribute such incidents to the Ahm Tal, and they are often right. [sources: Alpha and Beta canon; LUG: The Andorians: Among the Clans, All Our Yesterdays: The Time Travel Sourcebook; Decipher: Aliens]
We also have an excerpt of a fantastic speech from LUG: The Andorians: Among the Clans from a politician regarding the Am Tal. As I harvest canon lore from multiple resources and try to make the jumbled mess make sense, I don't strictly adhere to ATC's lore, but I've always loved this detail:
"I think it tragic that we deny the existence of the Am Tal simply because the Federation doesn't understand what the Am Tal is. They are the most valorous heroes of our age. They die, silently, by the hundreds, saving our lives, protecting our freedom, defending our honor. They mutilate themselves for us. They focus their passion toward noble results. We should honor them. We are not obligated to explain them. Their real names must never be known." - Oshuvas Idrani, public address, Tarsk, 2268 They are noted scientists. They are wealthy merchants. They are adventurous pirates. They are Starfleet officers. Am Tal operatives are everywhere, the "seekers of secrets" and the sworn protectors of Andorian interests. The [Andorian government] denies their existence, despite the fact that 100 members are Am Tal and that the other 200 not only believe in them but want them shut down. [source: LUG: The Andorians: Among the Clans "Am Tal: The Art of Secrecy"]
Starfleet Intelligence does not manage to confirm the existence of the Am Tal beyond rumour and hearsay until the late 24th century - TNG era, that is.
To help put all of this in context, in Emigre the current year as of the most recent chapter (Ch 47) is 2174.
From this we can conclude a few things.
The Am Tal are very good at what they do. Despite the fact that the average Andorian citizen is well aware of the Am Tal as an entity protecting Andoria's interests, Starfleet Intelligence (and the Federation Intelligence Services branches) can't pin them down for at least another hundred years. That is some impressive operational security from the Am Tal's side of things.
Am Tal operatives are perfectly willing to undergo radical surgeries, including removal of their antennae, for deep cover operations - regardless of whether or not these procedures are reversible. They cultivate a ruthlessness and cold efficiency in their operatives that, frankly, sounds a hell of a lot cooler than Section 31 ever did.
Am Tal are spread throughout the quadrant and have an extensive spy network. They sometimes leave 'anonymous tips' for Federation Intelligence Services (FIS) and Starfleet Intelligence (SI) when they catch wind of something outside of their purview that the Federation might want to look into. No word on whether that courtesy extends to the Vulcans at the time of Emigre, however.
Anyone could be Am Tal. They're not all super soldiers or secret agents slinking about in highly visible uniforms, and their propensity for radical cosmetic alterations means that they slip under the radar with shocking ease. In short, literally anyone anywhere could be an Am Tal informant or operative, and there really isn't a good way to tell for sure.
From there my headcanons are as follows:
The Am Tal are a vast and far-reaching network of spies, informants, assassins, deep cover operatives, and citizens from all walks of life. They recruit anyone, regardless of Clan or status, who can meet their stringent requirements for loyalty, ruthlessness, and competence, and who are willing to make the sacrifices necessary to serve Andoria.
There are many different kinds of Am Tal operatives as well, and a broad array of skills are required to serve Andoria and her people. Not every operative is a fierce warrior or possesses genius-level intellect, though the organization will certainly go out of its way to recruit such individuals if it can. Their ranks include merchants, scientists, engineers, freighter captains, shipyard workers, domestic service employees, clerks, media specialists, and more.
The Am Tal do not as an organization shy away from black-ops and wet work when it's needed, but it is not their first choice for dealing with problems. Their biggest priority is actually information-gathering, collation, analysis, and dissemination. A wealth of knowledge - particularly knowledge no one else wants one to have - wins wars as surely as a knife in the dark can topple nations. Moreover, dead men tell no tales and while death is certainly an option, Am Tal would much rather extract every ounce of information possible first before considering more final alternatives. They're not always picky about how they go about this, but finesse over brute force is the Am Tal's preferred modus operandi.
Part of the reason behind Am Tal's success is their operatives' willingness to do whatever it takes to preserve their covers. If they even suspect they're at risk of discovery, they disappear - and with their propensity for surgical alterations, quite effectively at that. Faking their own deaths is common, especially to estrange themselves from relatives who might pose problems in the future. In extreme circumstances, compromised operatives will self-terminate in such a way that their bodies and identifiers are destroyed as completely and thoroughly as possible. This is meant as a last resort only, and officials within the Am Tal are careful to neither condone nor discourage the act.
During the Earth-Romulan War (2156-2160), the Am Tal had limited success in gleaning information about Romulans, which was more than anyone else in the Federation had managed - but even so, it was hardly anything at all. Their file on Romulans and the Romulan spy network is threadbare at best in the current year, but it's all the Federation has to work with beyond the Enterprise incident reports.
The file, such as it was, was left anonymously on the Section Chief of Starfleet Intelligence's desk early one morning. Upon the isochip's discovery, the security footage or digital logs for the entire building were pulled, but upon review there was simply nothing there that shouldn't have been. Everyone involved agreed that the footage and records must have been tampered with, but no one could figure out how.
There are a number of Clans on Andoria (and its colonies) which have some association or another with the Am Tal, but not one of them have a provable tie to the shadowy organization. Rumour and hearsay at best are all that countless investigations have turned up. That doesn't stop the general population from making a few assumptions, however - better safe than dead is a rule to live by, on Andoria. Clans that have garnered such a reputation are generally treated with caution, since one never quite knows *who* exactly they are speaking to once Am Tal factor into the equation, but so long as the Clan's members are law-abiding citizens that's as far as it goes.
PART 2: The Andorian Incident!
The Andorians in the Andorian Incident are Commander Thy'lek Shran, Thon, Keval, and Tholos. As far as I know, we're never given the ranks of the other three, but I suspect Tholos was possibly a lieutenant.
Generally speaking, I have a few headcanons about these four, but I haven't really sat down and fleshed them out properly.
Shran is the most well-fleshed out character, having gotten the most screen time of the bunch. Where he's concerned, I mostly have headcanons about his departure from the Andorian Imperial Guard and subsequent poor lifestyle choices from a man who previously had been shown to be a competent and reasonable commander and negotiator. Something about that doesn't quite track, for me. It's generally agreed that he left the Guard out of guilt and shame for the fate of the Kumari, though I don't believe anyone else blamed him necessarily. The Marauder was a nasty piece of work, specifically designed to be a ship-killer, and it wasn't anything that anyone else in the quadrant had run up against before. It would have taken a miracle to save the Kumari once Shran's ship was the last one standing after the initial ambush. Certainly, there would be repercussions for the loss of the Andorian ambassador and the rest of the complement, but I don't think those repercussions would have been Shran's to bear, at least not entirely. He not only survived but saved as many of his crew as he could - and, more importantly, he lived long enough to negotiate a treaty in the ambassador's stead and be debriefed, despite his recklessness in his grief and the diplomatic shit-show that was the ushaan duel. The man has insane luck in the worst way - he has a weird tendency to be in the right place at the the right time, usually while he's also up to his antennae in problems and active firefights.
Tholos seems to be Shran's second in command, and he seems very comfortable following Shran into potentially volatile situations, from P'Jem to Corridan. That alone makes me think the two have known each other for years, or at least served together long enough to build up trust in the other's instincts. I headcanon Tholos as Shran's chief of security on the Kumari. Now, Tholos gets a bad reputation for creeping on T'Pol during The Andorian Incident which... fair. I personally think that the threats were empty, because something about Tholos' tone and word choice makes me think he's actually repulsed by Vulcans. His antennae, certainly, were not indicating any kind of fixation or arousal beyond sharp attention, which lends some credence to the idea that he was trying to provoke T'Pol, the other Vulcans, or the Enterprise landing party into giving something away. Since that didn't produce any of the desired results, he didn't bother with a second attempt, which a genuine creeper almost certainly would have. Remember that the Andorian squad was searching for evidence of a listening post, and as usual the monks were less than helpful. Provoking a response at this point - any response- would have been at least some kind of progress, since the Andorians had very clearly run out of momentum just as the Enterprise landing party arrived. Don't get me wrong - still creepy as fuck, but the possibility of tactical creeping makes me think that Tholos is the sort to actively look for weaknesses to exploit, maybe even habitually. He very well could be the sort who turns this on his own friends at times, with keen observations and cutting words that have become almost second-nature. In short, Tholos is an asshole but he's not that kind of asshole.
Keval, by comparison, we only see operating scanners and helping to search the monastery, which makes me think he might be a tech specialist or possibly an engineer. He doesn't get much in the way of screen time but even so Keval doesn't appear to be impulsive and we don't see any indication of a cruel streak like we do with Tholos. I headcanon Keval as a more measured sort of man, more likely to step back to assess rather than leap forward and react. He might be on the quieter side, as Andorians go, of a thoughtful disposition otherwise. When he's not searching Vulcan monasteries for secret lairs, I imagine he's the sort to enjoy tinkering with the systems under his care to improve their yield and efficiency when he has time.
Thon is the one we know the least about canonically, as he has no dialogue and is kind of just... there. He participates in the firefight, follows orders, and generally exists in the background. I'd say probably part of the Kumari's security complement under Tholos' command. I like to imagine Thon as an easy-going sort of guy, when he's not on a mission to suss out super secret Vulcan spy lairs, though he's by no means a pushover - the sort to enjoy wilderness hikes and hitting local dive bars.

🦊 for Seoltang
🦊 - Would people be rooting for or wishing death for your OC online because of the war?
…………………………………………………
Tumblr media
Noeu is looking at Seoltang who is making Coffee. As Seoltang’s Aide, he has something to report but for now….Why is Seoltang suddenly decided to make over 20 cup of coffees in the span of 50 minutes in the middle of a war???
Noeu tightly hug Seoltang, then kneel down in front of him.
Noeu: “Sir, I can have surgeon colonel verify for you that it’s impossible to die from coffee overdose. Do rethink your decision and stay with me”
Seoltang: “Aide what- That’s not what I’m trying to-“
Noeu: “I know people say weird things about you ever since you forgot to zip your pants on national television but you have to brave through it”
Tumblr media
Seoltang’s smile crooked a bit, he almost managed to forget about that event. He makes a square shape hand signal with his thumbs and his index fingers then draw a smile on the air with his left index finger, this had Noeu immediately stood up in response.
Seoltang: “Thank you for your kind concern but I would prefer if you addressed your report to me first”
Noeu is still worry but decided to go along.
Noeu: “Very well sir, my report today concern the minute of Area 21 meeting with the intelligence bareau”
Noeu tapped on his laptop to deactivated the power saving mode, showing a presentation slide.
Noeu: “Since you have no social media account, which is a very wise choice considering your work practice. Everyone will definitely wait to celebrate your death. Regardless, allow me to fill you in”
Noeu: “This morning the other generals received an overwhelming amount of online death threats due to the fake leak of North Capital’s documents relating to the recently emerged war between nation A and nation B”
Noeu changed the slide.
Noeu: “The publisher of these fake documents claimed that Northland had been stealing ship from nation A to pirated the cargo ships from nation B, oddly alighted with a statement from one of nation A navy who claim to be a survivor from the piracy before he’s found death in his residence”
Noeu: “The online account that published these fake documents had completely vanished, we concluded that these documents are very specific kind only 3 stars generals and up would knows how to utilized as it is a document designed specifically to be submitted through enclaves in Northland-Bay Hill CENTRIX but none of these documents are found in our or Bay Hill’s system”
Noeu: “Nation B is one of our important imports and exports business partners for many type of essential goods when it’s come to waterway shipments. Our main export is aircraft part which we produce by importing titanium alloyed from nation B. So the defense forces, specifically North Capital are blamed by the civilian for the current Northland’s economic failure”
Noeu: “The other generals had sent their troops to gather more information from the war-side which should rendered the actual instigator motionless for the time being but it does not change the fact that both nation are wary of us and will not cooperate with any troops let alone allow any Northland soldiers on their land”
Noeu: “Clearly this is an attempt to stir riot by an espionage agent who are already deep inside the defense service of our country. The intelligence bureau also report that the results from OSINT and DIGINT alluded to the same directions and so they seek insight from you concerning-”
Noeu stop once he heard a clicked sound, Seoltang is taking photo of the 25 cup of coffees he made.
Noeu: “Sir, are you listening?”
Seoltang: “My apologies Aide, I have to get my profile up in timely fashion so I can put this in the resume I will use to apply for a job at Starducks. I have a good reason to personally investigate there”
Noeu went quiet for moments.
Seoltang is the designer of Northland espionage network and CENTRIX shared between Northland and the other nations, of course his lead is ahead of every other generals when it’s come to intelligence and information. Starducks must have something to do with the-
Seoltang: “You see Aide, last time I attended the conference at North capital. The executives asked me the numeric difference between the IBU of the coffee served in the meeting room and each type of coffee served in Starducks. But I don’t even know what IBU stand for so they tickled me with duck feathers as a warning. They said if I don’t have everything figured next time they will tickle me with heated needles and filmed the entire process”
Tumblr media
What in the horizon are they doing at North Capital?? Do they have that much free time??? Noeu thought to himself, now he feels bad for the civilians knowing how their taxes are spent.
Suddenly, Seoltang phone’s buzzed.
Seoltang: “Perfect, I just got a like from an online coffee reviewer”
Noeu: “Hold on sir….you HAVE a social media account? Your existence is supposed to be SECRET! There’s a file about your identity in the B3 here in THIS BASE!“
Seoltang’s ears goes down a little after being scolded.
Seoltang: “I have multiple accounts depending on the industry but I’ve never disclosed anything about myself-”
Noeu: “You literally just published a photo taken inside a highly classified remotely detached facility!!”
Noeu took the phone from Seoltang and started reading some of his posts. It appeared that he did do some activities that supported the hate toward the North Capital officers, a very odd move especially for an account that is supposed to be for things like applying a job.
Then it all clicked.
Noeu: “Wait-did you conjured these online hate because you are bitter that the other generals tickled you with duck feathers over a stupid coffee question?”
Seoltang let out a soft laugh.
Seoltang: “Not quite, I personally don’t care about taking petty revenge on these generals but I care about your safety”
Seoltang: “Conflict can be use in many way from weakening people for threat migration to separating the human resources into group for more manageable organizational systems but surely you are a lot more well versed in this topic than me”
Seoltang approached Noeu and adjust Noeu’s hat.
Seoltang: “Since instigating conflicts is your specialty not mine, right Aide? May be you should rest more, it was careless of you to leave a survivor”
Noeu’s eyes twitched, now finally pieced together what had actually been going on. It’s the reason Seoltang didn’t attend the meeting between Area 21 and the intelligence bureau.
Seoltang: “You’re welcome Noeu”
In response Noeu laugh out loud.

One thing about Harry's court case that I don't see being discussed much is intelligence....no not Harry's sad lack of it 😂 we're all painfully aware of that! The fact that Harry will always be monitored We've been talking a lot about the RAVEC court case but something I haven't really seen much about is that RAVEC aren't just going to provide him security when he's in the UK: They're also going to constantly monitor his risk factor. Like always and forever! If they ever get any intelligence of a credible threat they will inform Harry as well as any security service and police force wherever in the world he is! if Harry is so caught up in the intelligence side of things, (the irony, I know!!😂) then he doesn't actually lose that intelligence service so why, oh why does he want unfettered access? The cynical part of me thinks he wants to keep that channel of communication open with RAVEC on the slim chance they let slip something about the RF security but I doubt that: A) he's clever enough for that B) even he knows that kind of breach would never happen. It's all about the money 💰💰💰... They're broke and want to claw back (😂) everything they've spent on security since they left.Getting the security status back is one big reason for this because they're self important, pompous dingbats, but after the rumours of Table 12 invoicing KC for all those clothes, then returning them and pocketing the cash not to mention the Ingriftus Games funding debacle and, going even further back, the rumours of irregularities in the Royal Foundation accounts; right before they were kicked out of it.... I wouldn't be one bit surprised if they had some scheme to somehow manage to line their own pockets in the invoicing for security. post link: https://ift.tt/ZhyTUBA author: SherbetTurbulent9787 submitted: December 08, 2023 at 01:37PM via SaintMeghanMarkle on Reddit

Why is ESG Intelligence Important to Companies?
Tumblr media
Human activities burden Earth’s biosphere, but ESG criteria can ensure that industries optimize their operations to reduce their adverse impact on ecological and socio-economic integrity. Investors have utilized the related business intelligence to screen stocks of ethical enterprises. Consumers want to avoid brands that employ child labor. This post will elaborate on why ESG intelligence has become important to companies.
What is ESG Intelligence?
ESG, or environmental, social, and governance, is an investment guidance and business performance auditing approach. It assesses how a commercial organization treats its stakeholders and consumes natural resources. At its core, you will discover statistical metrics from a sustainability perspective. So, ESG data providers gather and process data for compliance ratings and reports.
Managers, investors, and government officers can understand a company’s impact on its workers, regional community, and biosphere before engaging in stock buying or business mergers. Since attracting investors and complying with regulatory guidelines is vital for modern corporations, ESG intelligence professionals have witnessed a rise in year-on-year demand.
Simultaneously, high-net-worth individuals (HNWI) and financial institutions expect a business to work toward accomplishing the United Nations’ sustainable development goals. Given these dynamics, leaders require data-driven insights to enhance their compliance ratings.
Components of ESG Intelligence
The environmental considerations rate a firm based on waste disposal, plastic reduction, carbon emissions risks, pollution control, and biodiversity preservation. Other metrics include renewable energy adoption, green technology, and water consumption.
Likewise, the social impact assessments check whether a company has an adequate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policy. Preventing workplace toxicity and eradicating child labor practices are often integral to the social reporting head of ESG services.
Corporate governance concerns discouraging bribes and similar corruptive activities. Moreover, an organization must implement solid cybersecurity measures to mitigate corporate espionage and ransomware threats. Accounting transparency matters too.
Why is ESG Intelligence Important to Companies?
Reason 1 – Risk Management
All three pillars of ESG reports, environmental, social, and governance, enable business owners to reduce their company’s exposure to the following risks.
High greenhouse (GHG) emissions will attract regulatory penalties under pollution reduction directives. Besides, a commercial project can take longer if vital resources like water become polluted. Thankfully, the environmental pillar helps companies comply with the laws governing these situations.
A toxic and discriminatory workplace environment often harms employees’ productivity, collaboration, creativity, and leadership skill development. Therefore, inefficiencies like reporting delays or emotional exhaustion can slow a project’s progress. ESG’s social metrics will mitigate the highlighted risks resulting from human behavior and multi-generational presumptions.
Insurance fraud, money laundering, tax evasion, preferential treatment, hiding conflicts of interest, and corporate espionage are the governance risks you must address as soon as possible. These problems introduce accounting inconsistencies and data theft issues. You will also receive penalties according to your regional laws if data leaks or insider trading happens.
Reason 2 – Investor Relations (IR)
Transparent disclosures can make or break the relationship between corporate leaders and investors. With the help of ESG intelligence, it becomes easier to make qualitative and manipulation-free “financial materiality” reports. Therefore, managers can successfully execute the deal negotiations with little to no resistance.
You want to retain the present investors and attract more patrons to raise funds. These resources will help you to augment your company’s expansion and market penetration. However, nourishing mutually beneficial investor relations is easier said than done.
For example, some sustainability investors will prioritize enterprises with an ESG score of above 80. Others will refuse to engage with your brand if one of the suppliers has documented records of employing child labor. Instead of being unaware of these issues, you can identify them and mitigate the associated risks using ESG intelligence and insights.
Reason 3 – Consumer Demand
Consider the following cases.
Customers wanted plastic-free product packaging, and e-commerce platforms listened to their demand. And today’s direct home deliveries contribute to public awareness of how petroleum-derived synthetic coating materials threaten the environment.
The availability of recharging facilities and rising gas prices have made electric vehicles (EVs) more attractive to consumers. Previously, the demand for EVs had existed only in the metropolitan areas. However, the EV industry expects continuous growth as electricity reaches more semi-urban and rural regions.
Businesses and investors care about consumer demand. Remember, they cannot force consumers into buying a product or service. And a healthy competitive industry has at least three players. Therefore, customers can choose which branded items they want to consume.
Consumer demand is one of the driving factors that made ESG intelligence crucial in many industries. If nobody was searching for electric vehicles on the web or everybody had demanded plastic packaging, businesses would never switch their attitudes toward the concerns discussed above.
Conclusion
Data governance has become a popular topic due to the privacy laws in the EU, the US, Brazil, and other nations. Meanwhile, child labor is still prevalent in specific developing and underdeveloped regions. Also, the climate crisis has endangered the future of agricultural occupations.
Deforestation, illiteracy, carbon emissions, identity theft, insider trading, discrimination, on-site accidents, corruption, and gender gap threaten the well-being of future generations. The world requires immediate and coordinated actions to resolve these issues.
Therefore, ESG intelligence is important to companies, consumers, investors, and governments. Properly acquiring and analyzing it is possible if these stakeholders leverage the right tools, relevant benchmarks, and expert data partners.

Top officials from Google, Apple, and Meta testified Wednesday before the United States Senate Intelligence Committee about each of their company’s ongoing efforts to identify and disrupt foreign influence campaigns ahead of the country’s November elections.
The hearing, chaired by Senator Mark Warner of Virginia, served largely to impress upon the companies the need for more extensive safeguards against the disinformation campaigns being funded by foreign entities with an eye on influencing US politics.
“This is really our effort to try to urge you guys to do more. To alert the public that this has not gone away,” Warner said.
Warner, a proponent of expanding cooperation between the government and Silicon Valley to root out campaigns by Russia, Iran, and China, among other legally designated rivals, described the recent efforts by Russia as both “effective and cheap.”
The Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control placed sanctions this month on 10 Russian citizens, several of them employees of the state-funded news outlet RT, formerly Russia Today. US secretary of state Antony Blinken on Friday accused the Russian outlet of working hand-in-hand with the country’s intelligence services, conducting influence and cyber operations meant to covertly spread Kremlin propaganda on more than three continents. And earlier this month, US authorities accused RT employees of bankrolling right-wing influencer network Tenet Media.
Warner noted—almost as an aside—that Elon Musk’s X had refused to send a representative to testify Wednesday. A spokesperson for Warner told WIRED that X’s former chief of global affairs, Nick Pickles, had previously agreed to appear before the committee; however, he resigned from the company roughly two weeks later. X then declined to provide a replacement. (Pickles could not be immediately reached for comment.)
Warner received the companies that did appear amicably, praising the “positive role” they’ve played during the government’s recent actions: Meta’s recent decision, for example, to ban RT and its subsidiary Sputnik from its platforms. Warner also highlighted recent decisions at Google and Microsoft to publicly reveal information about foreign election threats, keeping the public and government better informed.
In addition to the Tenet Media indictment, the Department of Justice revealed this month in an FBI affidavit that it had seized 32 internet domains allegedly tied to the Kremlin and related entities. The websites, with names like fox-news.top, were created to imitate popular media and news brands, including CNN, spreading content favorable to Russia. One fake Fox News story, for instance, declared that Ukraine has “no particular value to the US” and that squaring off with Russia is “too great” a risk.
The operation, dubbed “Doppelganger,” allegedly relied on influencers and paid social media advertisements, as well as fake accounts that mimicked US citizens—in some cases with the help of artificial intelligence. In private documents obtained by the FBI, the operation’s principal director—a little-known Russian political strategist named Ilya Gambashidzer—is alleged to have stated plainly: “They are expecting fake news from us every day.”
Marco Rubio, the committee's Republican vice chair, argued on the behalf of Americans whom, he said, should not be punished for holding views that align with the Kremlin’s. “The question becomes, is that disinformation or is that misinformation, is that an influence operation, because that preexisting view is being amplified?” Decisions by companies to remove the amplified information is "problematic and complicated," he said, adding that he believes it risks "stigmatiz[ing]” Americans holding those views.
Andy Carvin, the managing editor and research director of the Digital Forensic Research Lab, tells WIRED that his organization, which conducts a vast amount of research into disinformation and other online harms, has been tracking Doppelganger for more than two years. The scope of the operation should surprise few, he says, given the fake news sites follow an obvious template and that populating them with AI-generated text is simple.
“Russian operations like Doppelganger are like throwing spaghetti at a wall,” he says. “They toss out as much as they can and see what sticks.”
Meta, in a written statement on Tuesday, said it had banned RT’s parent company, Rossiya Segodnya, and “other related entities” globally across Instagram, Facebook, and Threads for engaging in what it called “foreign interference activity.” (“Meta is discrediting itself,” the Kremlin replied Tuesday, claiming the ban has endangered the company’s “prospects” for “normalizing” relations with Russia.)
Testifying on Wednesday, Nick Clegg, Meta’s president of global affairs, stressed the industry-wide nature of the problem facing voters online. “People trying to interfere with elections rarely target a single platform,” he said, adding that Meta is, nevertheless, “confident” in its ability to protect the integrity of “not only this year’s elections in the United States but elections everywhere.”
Warner appeared less than fully convinced, noting the use of paid advertisements in recent malign influence campaigns. “I would have thought,” he said, “eight years later, we would be better at at least screening the advertisers.”
He added that, seven months ago, over two dozen tech companies had signed the AI Elections Accord in Munich—an agreement to invest in research and the development of countermeasures against harmful AI. While some of the firms have been responsive, he said, others have ignored repeated inquiries by US lawmakers, many eager to hear how those investments played out.
While talking up Google’s efforts to “identify problematic accounts, particularly around election ads,” Alphabet’s chief legal officer, Kent Walker, was halted mid-sentence. Citing conversations with the Treasury Department, Warner interrupted to say that he’d confirmed as recently as February that both Google and Meta have “repeatedly allowed Russian influence actors, including sanctioned entities, to use your ad tools.”
The senator from Virginia stressed that Congress needed to know specifically “how much content” relevant bad actors had paid to promote to US audiences this year. “And we’re going to need that [information] extraordinarily fast,” he added, referring as well to details of how many Americans specifically had seen the content. Walker replied to say that Google had taken down “something like 11,000 efforts by Russian-associated entities to post content on YouTube and the like.”
Warner additionally urged the officials against viewing Election Day as if it were an end zone. Of equal and great importance is the integrity of the news that reaches voters, he stressed, in the days and weeks that follow.
