Any and all shit about strange and awful environments which may possibly possess a malevolent will or which are perhaps merely beholden to their own natural laws and we are the ones drawn to destroy ourselves within them (The Stone Tapes and many of Nigel Kneale's other works, The Children of Green Noah, The Haunting of Hill House, Roadside Picnic / Stalker, The Terror, The Minpins, Annihilation again, The Island of Morel, I know House of Leaves is a perfect fit for this but personally I always found it a bit hacky)

Riddley Walker, A Canticle for Leibowitz, and other post-apocalyptic work - to some extent Mad Max and the better Fallout games apply - that find the value and humanity (while recognising the potential for self-destruction) in our absurd efforts to construct meaning and to tell meaningful stories from out of the ruin and chaos all around us.

There's other stuff - The Silt Verses steals a lot of its initial atmospherics from True Detective Season 1, both shows are inevitably in dialogue with the mechanics and themes of Lovecraftian cosmic horror even if I wouldn't call Lovecraft a positive influence - but that's a pretty good list, I think.

He operates under the belief that nothing really matters, that the universe is hopeless, blah blah blah. Because of this, he actually considers Bruce to be "puppies and rainbows" to a certain degree since Bruce holds what he thinks to be, an insanely optimistic (borderline naive) outlook on Gotham's future and people's potential to be good

It confuses the majority of people since his "sunshiney younger brother" is fucking *BATMAN*, who's famous for being the most paranoid person in the planet

100% lets the Batkids do whatever they want. He doesn't really care, but when Bruce scolds them, he takes it as a chance to mess with him, and he brings up all the deranged shit Bruce did in his childhood. (Like that scene in Rick and Morty where Rick shows Beth her concerning childhood toys)

He and Bruce were a nightmare to deal with for Alfred, especially during Bruce's teenage dirtbag years

Tbh, I'm not even sure if he fully grew out of the Teenage Dirtbag phase

When he was younger, he didn't really know what to do with his life, and often asked himself, "What's the point?" It led to him developing a bit of a drug addiction

He's about 10ish years older than Bruce, and after that night in the alley, he decided to go to rehab. He was kind of...a mess at the time, and figured that it would've been better for everyone, Bruce especially, if he just avoided the Manor

His relationship with his parents is...complicated

He didn't wanna be the one to continue the Wayne legacy, and he holds no respect for authority

People take one look at him and immediately clock that he has daddy issues

Was intrigued by the concept of the multiverse and went dimension hopping for a bit. He's definitely Seen Some Shit because of it

Even when Bruce was like 20 already, he still treated him like he was a kid. He learned about the whole Batman thing, and his first thoughts were, "You decided to cosplay that cartoon you watched growing up?"

Mentally compares Bruce's vigilantism to a kid playing superhero. He thinks it's pointless and kinda dumb, but eh, if it makes Bruce happy

Doesn't trust the Justice League. At all. He thinks of them as "Bruce's dumb weird friends." He definitely also has his own plans on how to take them down

Showed up as "Owlman" a few times to make fun of Batman

Has definitely made of Bruce for the Matches Malone thing

Visits like, once a decade. It's mostly to check if everything's gone to shit or not

How do you imagine each member of the Chain waking up from a nightmare?

Well it would depend on the intensity of the nightmare itself, but here’s generally what I think!

Time: is used to sleeping next to Malon, so he’s gotten good at controlling his reaction. Usually wakes up with a soft gasp, jerks a little, but stops himself from bolting upright.

Twilight: makes a lot of little noises in his sleep, and when he’s having a nightmare they get louder, and he starts getting really restless. He usually wakes up with a loud gasp or sob, but once he realizes what he’s doing he quickly muffles it.

Warriors: also good at keeping his reaction controlled, can usually act like he isn’t even having one. But if it’s a really bad nightmare, sometimes he talks in his sleep and bolts upright, and he can’t stand touch until the nightmare is less sharp in his mind.

Sky: he often wakes up slowly, even with the more intense nightmares. He tends to sweat a lot while he’s having them, and usually wakes up feeling hot and gross. And it takes him a long time to fall asleep after one, since his thoughts of whether it might have been prophetic (it’s happened before...) usually keep him awake.

Legend: jerks straight up, but doesn’t make any noise aside from a deeper inhale. If he’s crying at all it’s all very quiet tears, and he tends to shake a lot.

Hyrule: similar to Time and Warriors, he’s gotten good at controlling his reaction. Doesn’t always happen though, and if he’s woken up too abruptly then his initial reaction is to yell to distract, then get away or grab a weapon. Luckily the others figured that out pretty quick.

Four: talks a lot in his sleep during nightmares, lots of whimpers and pleas, and often wakes up with a cry. But he goes dead-silent after he’s woken up, and often feels shaky afterwards, and hates it.

Wind: looks like he’s dead asleep until suddenly he’s sitting up and crying. It takes him a minute to fully wake up too, so until that happens, he clings to either his blanket or whoever woke him up from it.

Wild: very restless, doesn’t sleep very deeply in the first place, so when he has nightmares they’re usually broken up weirdly between periods where he’s more awake. Usually wakes up sniffly and unsettled, and disturbed by what he really hopes aren’t memories.

Lu boys headcanons !!

- Almost everybody has fallen asleep on Twilight before, either as a wolf or Hylian.

- Legend and Sky like to braid Wild's hair

- Wind, despite hating being treated like a child, rides on Time or Warriors' shoulders a lot

- Four is a mum friend

- Sky has broken at least one person's nose when they approached him from behind without warning

- Hyrule is the most likely person to end up sitting on someone

- Wild sleeptalks and has held whole conversations with people before in his sleep (Wind and Legend take advantage of this)

- Warriors had a large family, but lost them somehow and it led to him enlisting in the army

- Time often has horrific nightmares but refuses to acknowledge or talk about it with anyone but Malon

- Four is good at baking and when they stop at a town, he'll most likely find a way to bake cookies

- Wild has nightmares about losing the others (mostly Twi)

- Sky and Legend are both deathly afraid of storms and silently seek comfort in eachother

- They also both have chronic pain and rope Wild in to their cuddle pile when it gets bad (there's no way his scars and overall trauma leave him unscathed)

- Warriors went to therapy before the whole time travelling adventure thing, he's a good therapist friend for the others

- He's also afraid of losing the others and sees them as his new family

- Sky has a lower bone density than the others due to living in the sky and riding on giant birds, this also leads to him breaking bones a lot easier

- Twilight hates large amounts of fire and panics whenever it gets too hot in an enclosed space

- Claustrophobic Wild

- Legend has a magpie brain and hoards anything shiny he can get ahold of, but most of the time it's useful

You look into Time's eye and see genuine fear from him. That may just be the first time in this journey that he's showed it.

"I knew we shouldn't have come to this uncharted Hyrule. Come on, little one."

"Hey! I am not little. Don't give me that look...! Alright, alright— fine."

"There are monsters popping up everywhere. Stay close. The camp is near and I'm sure the rest of the boys are ready."

Something was bothering him. You had to find out.

"It's more than that, Time."

You both have a close trust bond, you think. Time has told you a little of his past. A little about the Moon. A little about the Kokiri Mostly after nightmares. You always sleep next to or in his bed roll.

It's a lot deeper than you think. He lost his beloved, Malon. A... a group from another timeline attacked Lon Lon Ranch and killed her. A part of him broke that day. He's had too many parts of him break. You were the first person who made him feel whole since he first started out on his journey. You were always right, but he would never let you know that.

"We should focus on getting back to camp. We don't know what dangers lie in the darkness."

You stop walking.

"Time."

"We have to get back to the others. We don't have time for this!"

"Time!"

"The people who killed Malon are in this Hyrule."

He stated it with such desperation and agony that you were stunned for a moment. He never spoke of Malon since that incident. That was before you began traveling with The Chain.

"None of the others know about this. You have to swear you won't tell anyone else. You have to swear on your soul."

He has a begging tone in his voice. This is the most vulnerable you have ever seen him. A certain soft shine in his iris.

"You know me. I would never betray you or your trust. You and me, forever."

Forever? Don't say such things. He'll want to do anything to protect you. He will do anything. You are his... everything.

You really shouldn't have said that. You just unlocked his heart.

"I call them the Broken Links. They are the anthesis of everything we are. Cursed amalgamations made by what was Demise and now Ganondorf."

"W-What does that mean... for us?"

"It means I'll have to protect you." forever.

I love nightmare time because my favourite could be a badass woman with an 80s haircut but instead my favourite characters are a vet with 2 lines, some sweaty guy with a camera and a pathetic rockstar with a moustache stuck to his chin.

Fanfic prompt: you know how dink can control monsters and all

You know what would be beyond cruel

If he took the form of Malon and started fighting time while the chain is busy fighting the hord

Time gets increasingly angrier and annoyed by him daring to use his wife’s face to make him feel bad

Then in one cut he hatefully stabs him in the stomach and Dink drops this nightmare of a sentence while laughing

“You know that I can control monsters do you really think that she could resist me?”

Then gives time one last Malon like smile before dying

But the body never changes back and the hero of time has to see his lover’s death body right in front of him

The chain also watches in horror and guilt as time breaks down

And after the shock passes

A portal appears and the chain spends the entire time walking to Lon Lon ranch in silence and guilt for not realizing that the shadow took control over a loved one

As they open the door

The entire house was empty

And now either Malon was hanging out with her friends and because of that wasn’t home

Or

The shadow wasn’t gaslighting them and time really just killed his wife

(Wind just wondering why everyone is upset over the shadow dying because he can clearly see that it’s the shadow with his ghost seeing ability

Not understanding that the others are not capable of seeing ghosts and just thinks that they are guilty for killing a monster with their loved one's face

I used to have long hair past my boobs and now my hair is super short like above my shoulders

Like my little sister had long ass hair as a kid until my mom got fed up with brushing it every day since she was a nightmare to deal with so when she was like 7 she cut it short (she was still a nightmare lmao)

Who says aryll didn't have long hair until grandma went "OK no, short hair now" cause I can def see her getting it tangled everywhere

Some little headcanons for the two fics "Through the Dark" and "Lament of the Fallen" that I came up with. Unless I get a really good idea, I don't think I'll make a third part, but I still wanted to throw these out there. I had some of these thoughts while writing, but couldn't find a way to incorporate them in a satisfying way.

Post fight, [Name] did not sleep for days. They were feeling too much guilt for the damage they did to get any sleep. And if they did try to sleep, they were wracked with nightmares.

Eventually, Dink got tired of this and knocked them out because he wanted them to send another army against the Chain and he can't have them fail (again) because of something as stupid as being too tired to even hold a sword straight.

The Chain talks about you constantly. Both because that's what they're usually like, but also because they're terrified that they'll forget about you otherwise (they've seen how Malon and others react when they mention you). If you've seen Re:Zero, it's the same as the whole "who's Rem?" thing.

Some of them (mostly Wind) still hold onto the idea that you've been "possessed" or are being manipulated. They're double, triple and quadrupling down on denial of the situation and their faults that lead to this whole thing.

The more mature and observant of them (Time, Warriors and Legend), however, realise that this is not true. They are painfully aware that you chose this of your own accord and are trying to get the others to know this (to varying success). That's not to say that they accept this situation, they just understand why it happened.

A fast fluffy idea I had at work

Wolfie was excellent for comfort.

When anyone had a rough fight he would appear and circle to be sure they didn’t try to walk it off. When nightmares woke one of the heroes up—visions of curses and dying family and moons and wars and birds and blights—he would curl by their side, even begrudgingly tolerating a few pats or snuggles until they fell back asleep. When homesickness drove a hero to retreat into silence, Wolfie would distract them with mock wrestling or herd them to the group until they opened back up. He had sat with, under, and on all of them at least once.

All but Twilight.

Legend saw the rancher take the heavy hit that day, but no wolf joined him to be sure he didn’t try to hide it. He heard Twilight crying in his sleep, tossing as the pain of the bandaged wound pulled with his gasps, but no divine beast snuggled to his side till he stilled. He saw the sadness in Twilight’s face when Wild and Flora leaned into each other, when Time made a show of rubbing noses with Malon. The loneliness he endured silently.

Of course Wolfie couldn’t comfort Twilight. He was Wolfie.

Legend was sitting on watch when he heard the rancher’s breathing pick up again in his sleep. The man’s hands gripped his bedroll, searching for comfort unconsciously. No one else was awake. Anyone else, Legend mused, would be better at soothing Twilight than him. He could wake Time, or Wild. They’d surely noticed Twilight’s distress if Legend had.

He stood, popping his back, and moved closer. The rancher was calling for someone, teeth grinding as he did. Legend could see tears forming under his fluttering eyelids. Legend was not good at this.

His eyes fell on Twilight’s things. No one else was awake as he reached into the rancher’s bag.

Twilight woke with a start, panic melting into confusion almost immediately. He could smell something familiar, the acrid smell of Twili magic lingering in the air after a transformation. He looked at his hands. They weren’t paws. The words that had choked in his throat all day finally found an outlet as he realized something was on his lap.

“Vet..?”

“If you wake the others and they see this, I’ll bite you.” The pink rabbit shoved its head under his hand. “You were having a nightmare. Normally Wolfie deals with this for the others.” Legend took Twilight’s wrist, guiding it along his ear. “Since Wolfie can’t show up for you, you’ll have to deal with a substitute.”

Twilight stroked the fur, blinking to clear the tears still lingering. Legend sighed, unconsciously leaning into the rancher’s touch. Twilight felt warmth swell in his chest as he scooped his brother up, ignoring the slight squeak as he hugged him to his chest. The fur tickled his cheek, smelling like old metal polish and apple blossoms, nothing like home and everything like family and care and compassion. Legend grumbled, but nuzzled Twilight’s face all the same, whispering that he was ok and he was strong and they were there for him.

“Thank you.” Twilight breathed.

Wolfie was excellent for comfort.

But as Twilight sat, petting soft fur and listening to murmured affirmations, he was glad to know his brother would return that comfort just as freely.

While everyone else wandered in Wild's Hateno and shopped, Warriors sat on a hill and watched the people. He positioned himself so he was hard to see but so he could still see the others.

Down below, Wind was holding Time's arm and dragging him along. Warriors smiled fondly and watched them. He had given Wind a bag of rupees, and the boy reacted like he had given him a treasure chest. It was rare that Warriors offered him money like that, but everyone had been stressed and this allowed him to spoil both of his boys. He had known exactly who Wind would run to with his goods.

His boys. His darling boys.

Warriors chose his spot deliberately. It let him quietly watch his people and it made it hard for anyone to sneak up on him. It didn't look like Twilight was trying to sneak, though. It looked like his brother was trying to be subtle, which was far worse. Warriors raised an eyebrow at Twilight as his brother tried to casually stroll to Warriors. He had yet to meet anyone who could casually stroll up a hill.

"Hey," Warriors greeted. He looked past Twilight and grinned at the hat on Time's head. Time was trying to take it off, but he was visibly laughing and Warriors could see Wind waving his hands. Undoubtedly trying to convince Time to buy it.

"Hey," Twilight said and plopped beside him. He bumped Warriors's shoulder with his own. Something about his expression put Warriors on edge. It was never a good thing when Twilight smiled at him like that. That gentle, worried smile was often directed at the Champion, especially after he had a nightmare or flashback.

If Twilight was going to start something, Warriors wasn't going to assist him. He turned back to his boys. The hat was gone, and Wind was dragging Time in a different direction. They would be lost from view in a moment. Warriors took the opportunity to study Time's features. From this distance, it was challenging, but it was harder to study Time when they were close together.

He couldn't see anything of Cia in Time's features. Every day, he thanked the Goddesses for that. He didn't see much of himself, either, and he was surprised at how grateful he was for that. Time was his own person. His son was his own person. Warriors was grateful for that, no matter how much it also hurt.

Twilight broke first. That didn't surprise Warriors. "You could join us, y'know. There's a fabric thing here I think you'd like."

Warriors hummed and settled his back a little more heavily on his hands. His boys vanished from sight behind a building. "I'm good here. It's a nice day to sit in the sun."

"It's a nice day to walk in the sun, too," Twilight countered. "Why don't we go get lunch? Wild is about to make some nice stew."

It wasn't the first time that Warriors had wandered off from the group, but it was rare. He was more often helping Twilight to herd everyone. Was it just that which put that concerned expression on Twilight's face or had Warriors let something else slip through?

He couldn't help himself. He let his head fall back and studied Twilight's face. The Twili marks made it difficult, but Twilight obliged and held himself still, even if he undoubtedly had no clue why Warriors was staring at him like this. Warriors thought he could see traces of Time and Malon both in his features, but he couldn't see anything of himself.

It was for the best. It was. Let Time and all of his descendants be free of their awful heritage.

Warriors leaned against Twilight's shoulder. Not much. Just enough to feel his descendant breathe against him, touched by shadows but not Cia's darkness. "Let's sit here a little longer," he said.

Below, he couldn't see his boys anymore, but he thought he heard the familiar sound of his son's laughter.
