Lycanwing headcanons that absolutely nobody asked for :D
Lycanwings are split up into 3 different groups with 2 different types. We'll get into those later >:)
Landborn: These Lycans have regular scales and tails. They do not have wings or anything of that sort. Back spikes and head horns are common but not exclusive to landborns, and can vary in shape, size and placement depending on the individual. They tend to hunt stealthily, similar to jaguars, and can be proficient climbers.
Skyborn: These Lycanwings have similar features to Landborn, with a few major differences. Instead of arms, they have morphed into large wings. The wing digits branch out from where the fingers would be, and the joints have elongated for better stability. Skyborn still have scales and tails, though they are both differently shaped. Skyborn tend to live on cliffsides, where they spend most of their time in... well... the sky.
Halfborn: A mix of Landborn and Skyborn, they aren't very common due to differing habitats and feeding habits. Halfborns have both arms and wings, in which the wings connect to the back. Due to this they cannot fly with them, only gliding. Unlike their cliff-dwelling parents, Halfborns can live in most habitats, making them the most versatile and most dangerous Lycanwings. They are also the most agressive, because of conflicting behavioral patterns inherited from their parents.
Now onto the two different types!
Permanent: These Lycanwings are always lycanwings, and do not change from this state after having been infected. These are the most common ones to find it the wild, as their minds have been completely taken over by animal instinct.
Cycle: These Lycanwings go through phases over the course of a month. They're similar to moon phases, but are not linked. Cycle Lycanwings are most human at the beginning of their cycle, and steadily increase in draconic behavior and appearance over it's course. When most human, they can function normally in society, which is where they are most often found. Unfortunately Cycle Lycans have to go through excruciatingly painful transformations at the end of their cycle, and that is when they're most dragon.
Halfbreeds: Humans and Cycle Lycanwings can interbreed at certain points during a Lycan's cycle (i.e when they're most human). Halfbreeds often have less draconic features than a pure Lycanwing, such fewer/smaller back spikes, fewer scales, smaller horns if they even have them, smaller wings if they have them, tails more evolved for walking vertically, ect.
Thank you for coming to my ted talk :D

I had the chance to come across this Race to the Edge story about a dragon with the ability to infect other creatures through its bite to turn them into half-dragon beasts like a werewolf. Some say that it is a disease like rabies, a poison that gives illusions or a real curse, personally, knowing that there is so me fiction in the series and movies, I like to think it's a real curse. I mean guys, There are women with dragon wings, the Norse gods are canon in the series, there are no established rules that Berk and its universe are realistic based lol.
I understand that this is the only legendary dragon that has not yet been disproved in all HTTYD content and that still remains a cryptid.
Part of it is that there aren't many descriptions and there aren't many images, so I spent a few hours several months ago trying to get the best possible description with the help of wikifandom and others stuff i found thanks to the series to make a simple drawing of how this guy could look like, it was funny and I'm happy with the results.
Also, Gobber describes it as a red creature with black eyes.

Titan wing Lycanwing. There is only one known to exist, the heart of the curse himself Kessler, the Grotesque.
Tumblr media
Poorly drawn lycanwing for size comparison
Most lycanwings are only about double the size of their human form because of the strain from transforming each month. However, Kessler, the eldest Lycanwing, has a form several times larger than his human form. "Wings the size of a house" as Gobber said

*skitters in to drop more headcanons*
So on the fact that Krogan is part lycanwing (they are real, just quite rare. The dragon eye speaks of them, but for the most part, even to the Grimborn brothers they are a bit of an enigma. They are also incapable of shifting into full dragons. They are more or less half-dragons, half man half beast, and typically attribute to a certain species.) Krogan is roughly 75% blood content. He cannot shift, but he has extremely heightened senses, light sensitive eyes that allow him to see for miles on even a new moon (as if it is a full moon). He also is 8’2”, mostly to make up for the fact that he cannot shift. The added height and obvious weight is great for added protection against most would-be predators. His draconic instincts also cause him to have more primal behavior, and he is somewhat capable of understanding dragons.
To him, their tongue is quite garbled and oftentimes can be indecernible, oftentimes just being a discernible notice of just being able to understand bits and peices- the basics like food, hungry, water, thirsty, I Need, along with a few other things surrounding basic human needs and wants like “cold” and “too hot,” among other things. Though with a lot of practice he would definitely be able to slowly learn how to speak their language completely.
He has… different vocal chords. He can completly speak and mimic pretty much any noise or voice he puts his mind to (very well mind you. Voices and dragon chatter are his specialty.) His vocal mimicry… at least when it comes to people… it is perfect. But a bit too perfect. To the point where it sounds wrong. At least to others, if they pay close attention to the voice they realize it is in fact… not right. Maybe a tone is wrong in there.
He uses it as a luring strategy while hunting and working. Most don’t think anything of it because it’s something kept on the down-low.
Kroganis just. Weird and kinda fits that uncanny-valley to a lot of people because from first glance people think “oh yep definitely a person!” But if they look closer… his teeth are too sharp… his eyes are too catlike. His eyes glow in the dark, the pupils gleam like a cat or a dragon’s in dim light, and he has a third clear eyelid to protect his eyes while swimming or during flight. He’s Not Right if you look a bit too closely.
He can also be affected by Grimora venom and bewilderbeast mind control. The bewilderbeast mind control is not as successful as it is with a full lycanwing or dragon and the entire time anything the dragon tries forcing him to do is quite painful.
He also eats people on occasion (only when starving though.) Lycanwings are kind of natural predators of Humans so it is kinda why some people are unnerved by Krogan’s mere presence around them because they can instinctively feel that he is practically a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Upside is that he can and will eat most meat raw and has a higher immunity to foodborn illnesses like salmonella and parasites. (For the most part his extremely strong stomach acid practically cooks parasites.)
He’s also naturally kind of long limbed and gangly so he’s extremely good at climbing.
For the most part Krogan does just want to be left alone. His instincts and a lot of his ptsd related trauma causes him to be quite snappy and fussy as an excuse to get people away from him. His ideal day is spent alone, painting, swimming or sleeping.
*Runs faster than the speed of light because she forgot to check her inbox*
IM HERE! IM HERE! Ok! The changing of his voice is so cool! I would want that as a superpower to freak people out lol! Now, did he get bit by a lycanwing like the legend Gobber told or was he just born that way? The eating of humans and raw meat is gross in a good way! I totally see him as a painter! I can imagine him and Viggo being aggressive Bob Ross's trying to outpaint the out XD!

So, this will be important for future installations for how I handle lycanwings in my fanfics. I’ll be adding things on in the future when I think of them. Worldbuilding surrounding them will be different for each fic or setting so there’s that ig
I have been trying my hands at more… horror related writing so I am planning on writing a fanfic with lycanwing Krogan in the future. What it is about… you’ll see:)

The Mystery Behind Astrid's Wolf-Pelt Cloak (HTTYD 3)
Tumblr media
Hello, my fellow Furians! Welcome to another HTTYD article! This is one of my older ideas, but again, I just plumb forgot and it was just left sitting there collecting dust. 😅
Today, I want to talk to you about a realization and possible revelation that just has me in fits of excitement! When I watched the end of HTTYD 3 with Hiccstrid's wedding and their cloaks, I never thought much about it. However, when I watched the RTTE Season 2's 4th episode "Bad Moon Rising," I suddenly connected the two dots.
Take a look!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I paused and thought about it for a bit, and then I realized that... wait, wolf. Wolf pelt. A pelt that comes from a wolf. Wait... did the wolf pelt come from THIS wolf?! 😲🤯
Tumblr media
I mean, it could be possible, right?
I could totally see Snotlout killing the wolf and gaining a nice pelt from it for his troubles, and then 3 or so years later, when Hiccstrid have their wedding, he gifts it to Astrid as a wedding gift. Or maybe he gifts it to her as a reconciliation gift after having stepped on her wrath one too many times. 😅 Such a time could've been after Season 5's episode "Snotlout's Angels."
Tumblr media
Of course, this could just all be an uncanny coincidence, and this is a completely different pelt that had absolutely nothing to do with Snotlout's wolf, and that he either still has it, or Tuffnut has it as an apology gift for the... prank and making him think that he was turning into a Lycanwing.
But hey, I personally support this headcanon. What about you guys?
Let me know what you guys think! I'm always open to other interpretations. It's why theories and headcanons exist.
Thank you for reading this article! See you next time!
Long Live the Night!

Anyways. Art for my au where Krogan gets burnt pretty bad but ALSO. In. In love with the idea that since I headcanon Krogan as being part lycanwing to explain just how BIG he is and how feral he can be, that he has eyes that are much like a cats in that they glow in the dark and teeth that are extremely sharp, and where everyone else fears Krogan for these traits, Hiccup finds solace in Krogan’s scales and his sharp teeth and those eyes that are a bit too draconic to be naturally a full human because Hiccup finds those exact traits in Toothless and they were wrong about dragons being nothing but monsters so it can also be the same with Krogan.
Krogan doesn’t seem to know much about his origins, which bums hiccup out a bit but of course, it Krogan is good at one thing, it is listening, and it is also teaching. He may be gruff and kind of moody at times, but Hiccup understands it comes more from his past and the general distrust Krogan has towards other people than it does out of being intentionally mean.
Hiccup also thinks Krogan is really good at snuggling, not just because of the cloak but because he’s muscular, yes, but also soft and importantly very tall so his arms can just wrap around him perfectly (even though Krogan sometimes has nightmares and insists on squeezing him as if he’s afraid Hiccup will fly away; it hurts but it’s not like it’s any worse than his father’s hugs.)
Ngl, this position is the one I've constantly drawn them in every time I want to draw them hugging or smth we'll ignore that it's because I can't draw people interacting at all-
Just... Krocup physical intimacy for the win. They may not do it often (cause Hiccup is already awkward enough as it is without adding Krogan's... particular issues to the mix) but when they do, they it well.
Also, your Hiccup? ✨Prettyyyyyyyy✨

Hiccup looks so unconvinced.
My headcanon is that the adults in his life used to use the lycanwing to scare him to behave as a child. And now that’s he’s had a Night Fury roar in face and also, lives with one as a roommate, he’s like THIS IS YAKDUNG!!!!!

Some lycanwing headcanons because I’m writing two lycanwing stories.
First transformation is always the hardest, you become lost in your own mind and become an out of control creature while your mind and body is not your own anymore. This however, can be easily broken if the Lycanwinged person is able to come into contact with someone that can ground them back into reality, whether it be their scent or just their presence.
All transformations are painful physically, but the more you transform, the quicker you learn how to deal with the pain.
Newly transformed Lycanwings struggle to fly, needing to learn those skills through lots of time and practice. They basically fly like inexperienced baby dragons.
Senses heighten to those of a dragon, even when it’s not the full moon and they’re in a more human form. While it’s a problem for newly lycanwinged people, those who have dealt with it long enough get used to it eventually.
Each lycanwing form is different, it all depends on the person, some will have tail fins, others don’t, some have small curved horns, some have long straight horns, Even their flame is different for each person.
The transformation is all in the saliva, which is a dark red color and can be mistaken for blood. It can only transform someone if the saliva actually comes into contact with blood, so getting licked by a Lycanwing is harmless as long as there’s no open wounds.
Lycanwings have a very distinct and eerie roar, which is a mix between dragon and human.
Wings are always sensitive since they have to tear out of a person’s back, one can easily subdue a lycanwing just by massaging their wings.

Headcanon
Tuffnut has some type of mental illness. Specifically one that gives him delusions and hallucinations. I kind of want to make a post showing all the times I considered this but I'm really bad at making gifs. Regardless the whole Lycanwing episode is the one that solidified it for me.
Specifically Ruffnut telling him it's just one of his paranoid fantasies. Which made me think it happens often.
Now I doubt the vikings would even do anything about it. But I'm just imaging a modern au Tuffnut. Where mental illnesses are more well known. And I just.. made myself sad thinking of what he would go through.
Cause modern life for people that are deemed 'crazy' is not fun.
Anyway ramble over maybe one day I'll write a fic for it.

So according to my lycanwing headcanons, Krogan is capable of mimicking ANY voice or animal noise (including dragons) to an eerily unsettling degree. And at first I thought it was kind of weird to allow him to be able to mimic the voices of women and children simply because of the pitch difference.
Then I came to my senses and realized that no. No. That’s a GOOD kind of horror for me because imagining the 8’2” behemoth mimicking the high-pitched voice of a young, defenseless child while he watches his human prey from his position menacingly standing in a doorway is actually fucking horrifying to think about.
Krogan also uses this as a hunting strategy. With people he is supposed to kill, or is contracted to kill, Krogan will purposely sound like someone else who is scared, injured, or both, to lull his human prey into a sense of safety to come and “help” the injured individual, unknowing of the fact that this is actually a trap set by a predator with a successful kill rate of 99.9% of the time. Krogan has only failed a human kill a few times out of the thousands of times he has killed people. And even then, he heals far quicker than the average man, so while his prey was still recuperating, he came in and finished the deal when they couldn’t give him as much of a fight.
Also another horrifying fact. If Krogan wants to perfect someone’s voice to mimic it he will often try out different tonalities to see which one works the best, and which one would be able to lure someone in the easiest. Sometimes people do catch him doing this, but the fact is that it is not a known factor because most are too horrified of this fact to speak up about his capabilities of mimicry.

Krogan Headcanons? About his people? It’s more likely than you think.
Gonna @useless-moss for this since you enjoy these
Krogan’s full name is Kro’gæntan Aeros Astæral, of which his true first name, Aeros, is only to be used by close friends, family, and significant others. Kro’gæntan, the first name, would typically only used by his parents. Astæral, is his last name, his clan name, or pack name, considering how he is from a long line of Night Fury LycanWings, and he himself has scales on his back, arms, and legs of a night fury. He has roughly 76% blood content of lycanwing in him, his parents were both mostly lycanwings.
Krogan’s Mother, is known as *Nay’ata* or “mother” in his mother tongue, and his father is *Tas’u* “Father.” I’m still kind of going through and developing important words in his mother tongue, but that is what I have so far.
Krogan’s people’s names can have multiple meanings, for example, Kro’gæntan means, roughly, “He Who Bathes in Gold”, however going off of his entire name, Kro’gæntan Aeros Astæral, his name means “Star Who Bathes in Golden Rays”.
Krogan’s people are known as the An’dusu’ani, or The Peoples of the Golden River Basin, named after where they had settled, and their language is a very complex, diverse language that can be both very hard to learn and difficult to replicate and understand due to its complete isolation from the surrounding region’s people. Though in his culture, his people are naturally skilled artisans, in physical paintings, sculptures, and textiles, and are very skilled at learning languages other than their own due to a very large amount of the population being lycanwings or lycanwing descendants.
His people are also known for their skills in medicine, and are, in a lot of cases, a very peaceful and neutral race. In fact, unless they themselves are threatened, there is a high likelihood that they will never join a war unless their allies or they themselves are provoked. In which case, their rules for peace are completely stripped for the offending party. At the end of the battle after it is over, they will tend to the opposing sides foot soldiers due to the fact that in most cases the foot soldiers are there not by choice.
Due to their brutal fighting skills, despite being peaceful for the most part, a common slur used against Krogan himself is “mud skinned savage”, or “Bloodclaw,” these two things was and are flung at him commonly, especially by Drago after he had failed the man.
Krogan himself goes by Krogan, due to the fact that Drago decided the shortening of his name is far more threatening than that of his true name.
As of current, Krogan thinks he is the last of his kind. Of his people. Of his race. He is alone in the world, and as of race to the edge season 6 it has been roughly twenty years since he has ever seen any of his people, let alone his own kin as he was stolen as a boy and his family was slaughtered with the rest of his village.
For the time being, he is alone. His father is still alive, in his forties now, as well as a few refugees of his home village, however his Father has been trying to track him down. Most attempts have been unsuccessful.
Krogan is also a Tsa’lin, or a heir to his tribe, the Maya’etei or, The Tribe of Golden Ridge, His mother and father were the leaders, and while his siblings are all dead, and one is missing, his older sister, who was sold at auction for… other purposes than what Krogan was to be used for, Krogan would now technically be the heir to the seat of Chief, or La’nek, however Krogan, due to his severely poor mental health, would most likely never be able to lead very well, and is inexperienced in the business of doing so, let alone terrified of the idea of becoming like Drago due to the hunter for wealth and power.

Random Krogan headcanons
since Krogan is part lycanwing, he lacks some of the teeth that regular humans do. He has no molars, for example. What he does have is a hybridized version of molars and sharp back teeth for cracking bones open. Because of this, he often uses his hard upper pallet to chew things that are crunchy so as not to wear out his back teeth. This is allowed because he quite literally has a sandpaper like coating on the roof of his mouth for grinding things.
Among other weird things with his mouth, the only thing remotely normal about his set of teeth is the ones at the front of his mouth. Otherwise he has twelve canine teeth (three on each side both top and bottom). Despite this, fact and how large they are, typically he files the other two down to appear more natural, so it seems like he only has one set of canines instead of three.
To accommodate for these large, sharp teeth, in their natural state, not being filed down, he has a bit of a snaggletooth where sometimes one or two will poke out of his mouth, otherwise they do have a thin membrane attached to their roots that will tug them back and fold them in while not in use, considering these weapons are supposed to stay sharp since they’re used for both defense and offensive purposes.
Krogan has a forked tongue. It doesn’t impede his speech, and it is completely natural. He can move both forks of the tongue independently so use your imagination with that one I guess.
Krogan does have a strong enough teeth to crush an apple in his jaws without them breaking. He is also capable of using far more than the average human bite force (roughly 890psi in comparison to the average human’s measly 200-400 psi.) His bite is capable of leaving absolutely NASTY wounds since he can crush bones in his jaws very easily and he has a naturally venomous bite. (His venom is produced through his salivary glands.)
His venom is a neurotoxin. In high enough dosages it will go directly for the heart and the brain and liquify them from the inside out, thereby causing cardiac arrest and aneurysms. In a regular dose from him simply biting (he will guaranteed draw blood every single time. You cannot escape his venom.), you will oftentimes suffer severe migraines and very likely have permanent issues with your heart.
Humans are a natural part of Krogan’s diet. He does not actively hunt people but he will if he has to or is very hungry.
Krogan is for the most part an obligate carnivore. Much like a bear or a dog he can and will eat plants (mostly berries and flowers) but they are not a major part of his diet. It is only 20% of his diet. Otherwise he will get very sick.
Krogan has a third clear eyelid (nictating membrane) to protect his eyes while swimming or flying.

Canon is kind of a suggestion for me lmao but!
I’ve noticed that Krogan has these really funky boots that make his feet look weirdly short and it kinda made me wonder if they are a cover for having weird dragon feet. I already headcanon him as being part lycanwing (which is why he’s eight foot two) but. I’m not done with the other reference sheet, which I might actually redraw.
That is for a post rtte au where Krogan is more of a loner and a scoundrel after being dipped off the face of the planet to the hunters. He’s a rouge dragon rider, unknown if he’s allied with Valka (he is!) httyd 2 rolls around and Hiccup gets to meet him again, albeit in his more feral, draconic state he has allowed himself to go into.
There’s not much more on that au except for the fact that he rides a Night Fury. (A male. His name is Füego. Or “Old Man”. He’s a titanwing that’s quite… large.. and is nearly twice Toothless’s size. No one really knows how old he is lmao, he is, however, Toothless’s great uncle, so he is pretty old and not as fast as toothless would be if he had his primary tail fin… but he is fast.) I’m probably going to make most of Krogan’s clothing black to match his dragon since they’re made from Füego’s shed scales.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also have a pet toad… spud. He’s the baby. And the consolidation for listening to me ramble:)
Ok, The first thing I thought when I saw your beautiful art was THIGHS MC'GEE! The part dragon thing is SO COOL! I NEED a backstory for that! I like the fact that Füego means old man lol. Since he's Toothless's great-uncle I wonder what conversations they have in Dragon. I wonder how Krogan and Valka meet too. Say hi to spud for me! Seems like a nice dude :)

The sillies…
Anyways. Decided to start working on body headcanons! I’m adding soldier in the first one too (this is supposed to be a photo for Krogan’s file! Krogan doesn’t know what a camera is and the flash spooked him lol)
And I figured I could throw in my 3k word document on Lycanwings for more context as to what exactly Krogan’s other majority is :
I will also add a few other silly headcanons for the au.
I put Demo as roughly 41-42 in this au, which works out great because Krogan is 23. The cover story for Krogan’s appearance is that he’s Tavish’s son that was born out of wedlock and Demo never really knew about until very recently (mostly since they have some similar features so it is somewhat believable.)
Krogan has a quite odd accent to the other mercs, he rolls his J’s to where they make more of a jshh sound instead of your typical j, as well as having some off amalgamation of a Russian/Slavic and a mix of a few other accents that is quite unfamiliar to anything else (since he fluently speaks and was around people that spoke Norse in his old world.)
He does also speak some ancientt offshoot anscestor language to modern Russian. He understands the vowels and punctuation and wording of modern Russian, but not quite what is being said per se (it would be easy for him to learn though.).
I might do a Christmas peice though soon… Krogan has never seen a Christmas tree and the mercs have a nice big tree in the main room of the base >:]. Krogan was also a sort of gift, is what Demo calls him. Krogan showed up on exactly October 31st? Which is also Krogan’s birthday. They didn’t know that then of course, but they make up for it next year. (This also means Krogan is freshly a 23 year old when he arrives.) He is technically a Norse pagan and celebrates Norse pagan holidays, which Swissmas is considered Yule/snoggletog where he’s from, though he’s never actually celebrated. He didn’t really have anyone to celebrate with.
He thinks he’s not the best at giving gifts, but Krogan whittled each of the mercs a little wooden figurine the first year. Soldier got one of an eagle, made out of American pine (as the founding fathers would have wanted), Tavish got a little frog, since Demoks bomb jumping reminds Krogan of frogs. Medic gets one of archemedes, made from a small chunk of birch. I’m indecisive with Heavy, might have his figurine be one of his mother since she’s so significant to him.
But yes. Other thoughts. Since Krogan is still arguably quite young by even partial lycanwing standards, over time he will slowly get more scales on his body, like on his arms and legs. They don’t really need care, but he does polish them because it makes him feel pretty.
Tavish and Jane are the only who get to actually see him without shoes or without his feet being bound. Except spy. Spy is spy and he sees and knows everything. (Krogan doesn’t care because it’s just spy being nosy as per usual.)
It is a whole note in his file that Krogan is seriously… traumatized and suffers from PTSD and severe night terrors. He doesn’t tell anyone what they are about, and the few times he has tried, his descriptions to Demo are usually jumbles of sound and colors and smells that are all in your face with the feeling of dread and terror that this one singular figure gives him.
Demo found out that a better way for Krogan to express his fears and dreams is through art, though what he’s seen through the dark, heavy shadowed drawings of a man wearing a black dragon skin cloak and wielding a bull hook is that the individual in the man’s past that ripped him away from something at some point. There is a sort of dread that lingers from the way Krogan draws him. Stark shadows where the only thing you can see of the man’s face is a set of beady eyes that seem to search his soul for every single infraction that he’s ever made.
Tavish hopes he does not ever have to meet that man. For Krogan’s sake, at least.
(Backstory. The man is the one who owns and branded Krogan. The branding itself is a completely disgusting thing to the team.)
Soldier though. Soldier still sees the men, women and children marked with numbers in The Camps whenever he sees the brand. It is not a good feeling, anything other than pure rage that makes him want to find the man and take him down himself. No one should be dehumanized to anything but property. Not on his watch.
Anyways. Rambling over. Thoughts are going brain blast rn!!
