First School Visit as published authors!!

we've done a handful of school visits before as comic artists, but this is the first time we've been invited as published authors (for a school's literature event no less!). These photos are a mix of being taken by me and the wonderful staff of British School Jakarta.

We talked to secondary students of all ages! From "what's it like to make comics" to Career Talk for the seniors. We also had the absolute pleasure of befriending fellow visiting author Will Kostakis, a seasoned professional at school visits and prolific Aussie writer! I'm reading his book "We Could Be Something" and loving it. We're still blown away by his kindness and enjoyed bickering about the publishing industry together, haha.

We couldn't have asked for a better school to do our first author visit! Tightly organized, fun crowds of kids, and an incredibly supportive staff team. This has! Ignited me to the challenge of school visits! I really enjoy these, and I can't wait to make all the more books so I can do this all over again. Just a delightful week.

not that i expect Time Magazine to still be kicking 400 years later, but i’m dying to read the inevitable blurb cinder (and kai) (and probably thorne, but his ego is inflated enough as is) would have written about her for the “100 Most Influential People in the World” list. i’m not sure who they would tap to write it (it’s always a previous honoree) or what it would say but that’s the piece of fictional Cinder press I’d personally be most curious about, inspired by your latest anon.

If Thorne is going to be on the list, then I could see him being the one to write Cinder's blurb as often friends or colleagues write it. Besides, if Kai wrote about her it would probably be a straight up love letter. Whoever writes about Kai would probably write about his selflessness in marrying Levana to save his people. For Thorne it would be about rehabilitation and the transition from criminal to hero. Here's a mockup of what Thorne might write about Cinder:

the funniest thing happened to me today. i was at the local antique mall, just sort of absent-mindedly browsing for something to put on Selene’s altar, and i came across a shelf full of milk glass. i found a little cup that sort of looks like a chalice and thought “oh this would be cute for the altar” but i wasn’t sure about it so i put it back and kept looking.

i asked Selene what she thought and if she liked the milk glass, and i kid you not i turned around that second and saw a bunch of chunks of selenite. then i turned around again and there was a postcard with the moon on it right in my line of sight. she was absolutely DETERMINED to make sure i knew she wanted it lmfao i was like girl okay i get it!! damn!!

so of course, i bought the cup (and the selenite)

Natsuki didn't really like you when you first joined the club, she thought you were annoying and she didn't want a guy there.

though once you started writing poems for her, that quickly changed.

it doesn't take her long to fall in love with you.

At first she has no idea what to do with these feelings, she's never been in love before.

and then she started getting urges...

urges to hurt people and urges to take you, to kidnap you even.

Her jealousy was worse with other club members then other girls around the school, especially with Yuri.

seeing you help Sayori button up her uniform, or feeding Yuri chocolates, it enraged her.

it scared her even. Sayori was aloof and kooky, Yuri was deep and brooding, Monikas brains and beauty. yet she was mean and cranky, hoping that her cute exterior would cover those parts up. how would you ever like her?

as much as she wanted too, she wouldn't go through with anything that bad. she'd be meaner to girls who got too close to you, but never get physical like she wanted to be. and kidnapping was out of the question until she got her own place and wouldn't have to worry about her father...

she was starting to get frustrated with all those bottled up urges, it was obvious to everyone in the club something was wrong.

even though she tried to cover it up, everyone knew she liked you a lot. so they sent you to help her.

you had sat down beside her while she was reading her manga, and you asked if she was okay.

when you showed her concern, it felt wonderful, almost making those bad thoughts go away.

she wanted to be somewhat honest so she told you she was having troubles with her emotions, not specifying what emotion.

you stayed with her and comforted her until monika made everyone share poems.

she fell even deeper in love with you after that, knowing you cared for her made her heart flutter. though she learned to cover her frustrations a bit better after that.

-and the day after that.... she confessed...

-if you said yes, she'd be overjoyed. she'd be the same mean natsuki you always knew but she was clearly way sweeter to you than others.

-and she'd get soft easily in private, by that i mean clingy and obsessive.

-and if you said no... she'd be pissed. she would immediately assume it was because you liked someone else(whichever girl you spend the most time with besides Natsuki).

-in her anger she would start to make things go wrong for them. at first it was small things, like stealing small almost unnoticeable things from their bags but it soon got bigger. she would destroy their things like makeup, books, and even their phone at one point. she would even go as far as putting non-lethal poisons in their lunch. and it would continue like that until one or both of them graduated.

-and she would definitely kidnap you as soon as she has her own place.

hello you wrote a fanfic where Tims teacher was failing him on purpose to send him into a spiral of self doubt where in a moment of 'i can fix this' (This being his grade) he followed his teacher into his car and nearly got killed, and I find myself LOVING the mystery behind the teacher and like how he almost sucseeded and stuff and I think it would be interesting if I could read a full 50 chapter book of that so I was wondering if I could borrow the idea of a fanfic of my own?

Hello anon! So glad you enjoyed OCLAL! :) Fun fact, the idea of a murder mystery with a teacher going after students was totally inspired by the anime Erased (sorry for spoilers! still a fantastic watch tho imo). Super sweet of you to ask for permission on this idea, even if that element of it is not from my noggin originally but STILL! I'm a big believer in, as a writer, being inspired by other works in order to craft a story of your own that you personally find fun (so long as it's not direct stealing, of course), especially in fanfiction where there's not any money involved. If you do write something, feel free to share it with me bc, obviously, I love the idea too! Have fun!
