Hello Ghost!

Movies watched in 2023
Hello Ghost! (2023, Taiwan)
Director: Hsieh Pei Ju
Writer: Chou Ching Wen
Mini-review:
I have to say I expected more from Hello Ghost!, but it's still an okay movie. The cast is great, and the final plot twist did caught me by surprise. On top of that, there are a lot of funny scenes, and the script has a pretty solid sense of humor. However, the story moves at such a hurried pace that it barely takes time to set up the major plot points and the characters' development. I don't know, I feel like it would have been a much richer movie if it had let the story simmer a bit more. Also, the film includes some pretty dark themes that might be triggering, even if they are approached with a somewhat lighthearted, comedic tone. I'd recommend looking up some content warnings.

Cinderella Chef. 8
Story: 8
Acting: 10
Chemistry: 10
Comparable to: Oh my Emperor! (cdrama); The Romance of Hua Rong (cdrama)
I honestly thought I posted about this drama awhile back so I swept through the archive to see if I did and couldn’t find it so I rewatched it again and like somewhat the second go around, although I did fast forward through a lot. The storyline is a little bit different then the classic cliche time travel historical romance stories which the first go around was very refreshing. Both main leads have excellent chemistry together which makes the drama all that more enticing but unfortunately it does have that bit of unfortunate filler dragging episodes. The series for me had too many episodes and definitely should’ve been cut down a bit. Then it would’ve been a very highly watchable drama throughout. It’s still very entertaining and at least deserves to be watch once if you a fan of historical romances.

What are your favourite kinds of tea and how would you rank them?
(you can't ask me about tea and not get hit with a wall of text. so... enjoy)
I don't really rank teas, I think tea should be picked for the occasion, depending on the season, company, scenery, food pairing (if there's any), the quality and type of water available, etc. There isn't really a single best option.
Also good teas are a lot like wine, it matters a lot who made it and how. A simple variety that is processed with proper care and is fresh will be better than a low-grade or old tea of a fine variety.
Tumblr media
That said, if I had to pick favorites...
Wu Yi oolongs. You just can't beat that flavour profile, the mix of flowers, roasted nuts and what they call "cliff melody" (basically Wu Yi mountains terroir). They are complex, versatile (some teas can be ruined by water that's too hard or to soft, with these guys it just draws out a different part of the flavour spectrum) and pair with anything. Proper tea ceremony? Perfect. Something to serve to guests with mild blue cheese and some nuts? Even better, cheese enhances the flower aspects, it's honestly better than any wine pairing. Casual cup that goes together with vegetables roasted with herbs (yes, I sometimes drink tea with my dinner)? Great as well.
My favorites would probably be Wu Yi Shui Xian (daffodil, a bit of dried plum and a bit of gentle smoke), Roi Gui (eglantine and cinnamon, roasted notes, a bit of malt) and Da Hong Pao (this one is tricky, the versions of DHP you can get your hands on without being a government official are all blends, so technically it can mean anything, but most versions keep a lovely balance of smoke, sweetness, currant flowers and metallic notes). Bei Dou if I can find it (bisquit, oak, orchid, smoke, a bit of minerality).
Jin Jun Mei. My autumn favorite, the *prettiest* tea in the universe when done right, with notes of malt, rye bread, and wild strawberies, usually still very good when done wrong (chocolate, rose, physalis plants, orchid...).
Dong Ding oolong, one that I would use for introducing someone to fine teas. Freshly cut grass, wild honey, a touch of caramel and what I can only describe as a feeling of cold wind from a lake. Delicate and ridiculously pretty.
Hei Cha, "true" black teas that are more fermented than even pu-erh. Teas of bordelines dwellers and northern barbarians and I am one, after all. "Korla Pear" Hua Zhuan is my latest favorite. Wood and pear notes, one can't really describe it. Lu Bao if you live in a dry climate and let it sit on a shelf for a couple of years is also very good (wet autumn leaves, ink, charcoal and snowdrop flowers). Don't ever drink it fresh, it's awful and bitter and has a note of rotten vegetables. If you can forget it on a shelf for twenty years it's a transcendent experience and I can't recommend it enough.
Anything white, really. White teas are a very special art. They are pretty much tea herbarium. They are made with next to no processing and mostly are just gently dried in the sun, so you get the purest interpretation of the leaf itself. This leads to... experiments. There are the classics, like Bai Mu Dan with its notes of peony, wormwood and plant milk. There's the experience of drinking teas gathered before Ching Ming (if the year is good), the first tea of the year with its gentle minerality that's a bit like the scent of thawing snow.
There are insane things like letting them age for years like you would shen pu-erhs (Yin Zhen is honestly better in this version, if you ask me), I can't really describe that scent, it's wildflowers and autumn leaves both and something that feels like a mix of wormwood fluff and dried strawberries.
There are leaves that would normally be used for pu-erhs processed as white teas and these tend to have lovely cantaloupe and honey flavour. Honestly, the fun part about white teas is often not just the taste but how punk are the things teamakers do with the leaf and the fact you can taste nuances that would be otherwise overshadowed by the processing technology.
Chinese yellow teas. I actually don't remember names, I used to pick them by scent. Some have a "flowers and ink" scent that is very precious to me.
I think that's about it. I can't choose a single favorite between these.

DAILY SELECTIONS FROM LAO-TZU’S TAO TE CHING — AUGUST 16, 2023
“In warfare there is a saying rather than a host better to be a guest rather than advance an inch better to retreat a foot this means to form no ranks to put on no armor to brandish no weapons to repulse no enemy no fate is worse than to have no enemy to have no enemy is to lose one’s treasure thus when opponents are evenly matched the remorseful one prevails” -Lao-tzu- (Taoteching, verse 69, translation by Red Pine) WANG CHEN says, “In warfare, we say the one who mobilizes first is the host and the one who responds is the guest. Sages only go to war when they have no choice. Hence, they are the guest.” CHIAO HUNG says, “This was a saying of ancient military strategists.” If so, they remain unnamed. Sun-tzu, meanwhile, calls the invading force the k’o (guest) (Suntzu Pingfa: 2.20). HO-SHANG KUNG says, “According to the Tao of warfare, we should avoid being the first to mobilize troops, and we should go to war only after receiving Heaven’s blessing.’ LU HUI-CH’ING says, “The host resists, and the guest agrees. The host toils, and the guest relaxes. One advances with pride, while the other retreats in humility. One advances with action, while the other retreats in quiet. Those who meet resistance with agreement, toil with relaxation, pride with humility, and action with stillness have no enemy. Wherever they go, they conquer.” SUNG CH’ANG-HSING says, “In warfare, sages leave no tracks. They advance by retreating.” WU CH’ENG says, “Those who go to war form themselves into ranks, equip themselves with weapons, and advance against the enemy. But when sages go to war, they act as if there were no ranks, there were no armor, there were no weapons, and as if there were no enemies.” SUN-TZU says, “Generals who advance with no thought of fame, who retreat with no fear of punishment, who think only of protecting their country and helping their king are the treasures of the realm” (Suntzu Pingfa: 10.24). SU CH’E says, “Sages regard compassion as their treasure. To treat killing lightly would be to lose the reason for compassion.” TE-CH’ING says, “When opponents are evenly matched and neither is superior, the winner is hard to determine. But whichever one is remorseful and compassionate will win. For the Way of Heaven is to love life and to help those who are compassionate to overcome their enemies.” WANG PI says, “Those who are remorseful sympathize with their opponents. They try not to gain an advantage but to avoid injury. Hence, they always win.” WANG P’ANG says, “To be remorseful is to be compassionate. Those who are compassionate are able to be courageous. Thus, they triumph.” LIN HSI-YI says, “Those who attack with drums and cheer the advent of war are not remorseful. They are remorseful who do not consider warfare a pleasure but an occasion for mourning. In this verse, warfare is only a metaphor for the Tao.” LAO-TZU says, “When you kill another / honor him with your tears / when the battle is won / treat it as a wake” (Taoteching: 31). And RED PINE notes that lines ten and eleven may seem strange when we read them for the first time. I know they always trip me up. I keep thinking “to have no enemy” would be great. It just goes to show how little I know. But, Red Pine says, “The import [of these lines] would seem to be that without an enemy, we would have no recipient of our compassion and thus no reason to practice it.”

Hi, Cat! I hope you’re having a nice day. Could I please fc help? I’m looking for someone who could play an older version of Stephanie Hsu. Thank you!
Chiao Chiao (1943) Taiwanese.
Elaine Jin (1954) Taiwanese.
Lu Yi-ching (1958) Taiwanese.
Pauline Lan (1958) Taiwanese.
Yang Kuei-mei (1959) Taiwanese.
Gigi Leung (1976) Taiwanese.
Trying to find darker skinned Taiwanese actresses was SO hard, sadly these are the closest I could find. In unedited/some photos they look similar but lightning is also harrrrrrrd. 💌
