Hello Ghost!
Movies watched in 2023
Hello Ghost! (2023, Taiwan)
Director: Hsieh Pei Ju
Writer: Chou Ching Wen
Mini-review:
I have to say I expected more from Hello Ghost!, but it's still an okay movie. The cast is great, and the final plot twist did caught me by surprise. On top of that, there are a lot of funny scenes, and the script has a pretty solid sense of humor. However, the story moves at such a hurried pace that it barely takes time to set up the major plot points and the characters' development. I don't know, I feel like it would have been a much richer movie if it had let the story simmer a bit more. Also, the film includes some pretty dark themes that might be triggering, even if they are approached with a somewhat lighthearted, comedic tone. I'd recommend looking up some content warnings.

svt reaction another member walking in on you having sex
Ot13 seventeen : getting walked on by other member. (ft. traumatised svt) so much fun writing this it's so funny and shitty
Seungcheol : throws a pillow in the direction of the door before the person even gets the slightest peek. (Soonyoung just wanted a charger but somehow ended up with a pillow bruised blue eye)
Jeonghan : (hoping that you're adequately covered) he just doesn't something to make you moan louder hoping that the person leaves disgusted (or joins for a threesome, hani doesn't mind) (hao is too traumatised to even think he's going for intense green tea and therapy session now)
Joshua : he's a teeny tiny bit of exhibitionist so it was a bit of a turn on when someone accidentally walked in on you two doing the nasty in the wildest postions (seokmin took 3 business days to overcome that trauma and meet Joshua's eyes normally again)
Jun : he's probably too lost moaning into the crook of your neck to notice an unexpectant visitor (Wonwoo is never entering doors without knocking ever again)
Hoshi : just freezes in his spot midthrust, hurrying to cover you up and yelling at the person who just came in (jihoon did no crime to be sentenced to hear the kinky shit soonyoung is into in the beds)
Wonwoo : if dino is too deaf to hear the loudest fucking sex noises coming from Wonwoo's room, it's completely his fault, Wonwoo ain't doing nothing to pay his therapy
Woozi : probably got caught making love in his studio. Luckily, he has the decency of fucking you into the couch which is out of the view of the door than shamelessly on his deskchair how he initially wanted (seungcheol didn't need to know where all of jihoon's inspo comes from)
Minghao : probably the only smart one of the group who actually locks door before getting frisky.
Mingyu : he is rather petrified by getting caught, yelling at his hyung to leave. (Jeonghan never told anyone but if he teased mingyu to this date about how he moans your name, it's between the bros)
Seokmin : flustered af and just frozen at his spot even after the person instantly leaves until you smack him and tell him to lock the door (seungkwan would have never guessed the crazy of the group was such a freak in bed and he wished he lived without that knowledge)
Seungkwan : embarrassed thoroughly. Now vernon has to live his life knowing what seungkwan sounds like in bed.
Vernon : probably doesn't notice? Lol he just busy getting that nut (rip hong joshua's eyes)
Dino : he prolly switches off all the lights and does the deed under the blanket so someone could come inside, stroll around and not bother him (mingyu got lucky wearing them headphones the day he came to borrow chan's power bank)

CHAPTER 1
Joshua Hong had been the first for many things in his life: the firstborn, the first brother to complete his education, the first student among his classmates to perform a solo surgery, and one of the first doctors to try chloroform for his medical procedures, as anesthesia wasn't nearly as developed as it is now.
He was also the first one to be turned.
No other outcome could have been expected. People like him - young, enthusiastic, seemingly blessed by the gods - had to have some divine punishment waiting for them. Josh's penance would be to live forever with his luck... and to have it slowly fade into misfortune.
As a doctor, he never thought life could be eternal. He had witnessed all types of miracles at Paris Salpêtrière, but no soul had ever gotten to escape the sweet lullabies of death. At first, he felt terrible about it. Doctor Pierre had told him to get used to it, as God only gives special treatment to his friends. Little did he know, Pierre was a close friend of Him. He didn't notice it until he found himself digging a blade into his tutor's jugular vein.
No pulse could be found, but Pierre's breaths were still steady.
"Let's go, Josh! Everything's packed!" Vernon shouted as he got into the driver's seat.
"Do we really have to go through this again?" Jun complained, as if it would change anything. For the last time, he stared at the California house that had been their home for the past ten years.
He always got too attached.
"C'mon, man, you know it's better this way," Vernon replied.
From the passenger seat, Joshua looked at them. Minghao rubbed his brother's back and gently pushed him into the car despite his deep and frustrated sighs. This might be the worst part. But upon reflection, the worst part might also involve the one where locals started noticing their lack of aging, leading him to search for a new town.
"Jun, you can't be mad..." Vernon tried.
"Hum, yes, I can be mad," Jun countered. "And I can't believe you all think it's possible to move from California to this nowhere town."
"This 'nowhere town' is called Forks, alright? And it's your new home, so you better get used to it."
Nowhere Town. That's a good name, as it reflected all the peace Joshua had been praying for since Junhui and Minghao joined his and Vernon's odd nomadic, supernatural-like lifestyle.
"It's always cloudy there. You'll get to hang out more often with your friends."
"Sorry, what friends?" Jun asked sarcastically.
"You'll make friends eventually, Jun. Stop whining," Minghao said.
You didn't believe Forks was the best town in the world either. The landscape, always covered by mist and the ground sticky wet from the most recent storm, looked exactly as it did when you were born. You finished cleaning the house an hour before the awaited arrival. The large windows were all cleaned, not a single stain preventing passersby from catching a glimpse inside.
The house was empty for now, as it had been since the heartbreaking death of the previous inhabitants. You sat by the porch, trying to catch your breath and wondering what the new family looked like. Were they old? Were they nice? Certainly, they wouldn't want anyone to disturb them, otherwise, they would have chosen to live closer to the town center.
Surrounded by trees and animals, your aunt's house was known for attracting people who appreciated solitude.
That's the first thing you learned about Minghao.
There is a van approaching from a distance. The new renters arrived half an hour earlier than you planned. You stand up quickly, shaking the dirt off your pants when, for the first time, you see his face.
You won’t be able to forget that face.
"Y/N, right? We talked on the phone yesterday," one of the guys says. There are four of them now. By his introduction, you supposed you are talking to Mr. Chwe.
"Yes! It's so nice to meet you all, Mr. Chwe."
You shake his hand, surprised to find Mr. Chwe, a doctor, looks more like a student who just pulled an all-nighter.
He also has the temperature of an old man.
"Just Vernon, please," he said.
You had a speech planned, but right now you're having trouble remembering what you were going to say. There's a man behind Vernon who looks at you with tender and compassionate eyes. You assume he's Joshua, the one who responded to your emails.
"I'm so sorry my aunt couldn't make it today. As I told you, she's been sick. It would be difficult for her to climb all the way up here. I'll give you the tour, if you're comfortable with it."
Vernon shows his understanding. The same goes for Joshua, who breaks into a sincere smile and thanks you for being so attentive. It's almost as if they're acting like parents. And then, there are the kids...
"Actually, I'm tired. I'm sure we can figure out the house ourselves."
"I could really use some sleep."
"We've stayed in bigger houses anyway."
"Jun, Hao... Enough of that."
Jun and Hao; you're not sure which one takes your breath away more. With their silky, white, shoulder-length hair, they stand in the woods like fairies in a fairytale.
But you imagined fairies to be... more polite, perhaps.
"It's okay. It must have been a long ride for them. I'll leave you to rest." You tranquillize Mr. Chwe with a smile, but think, Morons, in your head.
Almost as if he heard what you said, Jun's face contorts in a gesture that appears both surprised and offended.
"Do you all see that little house right there?" you ask, pointing down into the distance past the trees. "That's where I live. Just call me if you need anything. We're the only neighbors you have around, besides the Boo Family. Oh, and I almost forgot. They asked me to leave you a present since they won't be able to come and say hello today. I left it inside."
"A present?" Minghao asks, his forehead furrowed and a fucked up temper. It's as if you'd just left a bomb or something in their kitchen.
You feel small under his gaze.
"Yes... it's just a beautiful mirror."
•••
Vernon was the second one to get turned.
He graduated from uni, having already killed a man. He tasted his blood, vomited to stop feeling sick, but then got the imperious need to drink from him again.
“Who the hell is this Boo Family?” Jun asks once they get to the house. The mirror is still covered in the living room. There’s no use in unwrapping it as they can’t use it anyways.
“Some old friends.” Vernon answers, face paler than usual.
He made a vow to never to steal a life again. No matter how hungry he was, no matter how weak he could get, he had a strong set of values he planned to spend the rest of his non-desired eternity with, even if people told him it wasn’t the natural thing to do.
“Explain yourself.”
“No explanation needed… Just go to your room, Jun.”
“Are you grounding me or something? I thought we were over with all this weird family shit.”
“I could be your grandfather, how is that weird to…”
“Boo Seungkwan is the man who brought Vernon into this life, okay?” Joshua explains.
Josh had been his mentor. Studying hard for his degree, Vernon was only seven years younger than him and had a mind full of dreams. One of them was to become a doctor as brilliant as Joshua, which, after a lot of sacrifice, he did. But he never thought his desire to be like Joshua would put him into a world so dark and twisted. When he said he wanted to be like Joshua, he never imagined… this.
“There’s your answer.” Vernon says.
He wouldn’t have endured sane this long without Joshua as a friend.
“Don’t worry, mate, we are leaving this place.”
The house is big. Of course, they lived in much larger houses than your auntie’s, as Jun said. But this house… There is wood covering the walls and enormous trees blocking the sunlight from the windows.
Vernon asks himself, is it always going to be like this?
Will Josh and he finally be able to take daytime shifts? Will they be able to walk around town without having to worry about deadly eruptions on their skins?
Sunglasses and long sleeves, then they are ready to go. The offer is tempting.
“There’s no need.”
“What do you mean?” Joshua asks in disbelief.
“I mean… We already paid the girl.”
“And she can keep the money. We’re leaving.”
Jun seems thrilled. What will their new location be? Bahamas? Maybe France? Oh, he loves pain au chocolat! Now it is gonna be great.
“I want to give it a try, Josh,” Vernon says, much to Jun’s disgrace. “Yejin is dead. And there’s no other reason for the Boo family to attack me again.”
“Yejin? Like your ex-friend Yejin?” Minghao asks.
“More like the maniac, out-of-her-mind-obsessed-with-Vernon, Yejin.” Joshua corrects.
“How did you know about her, Hao?”
“I might have stumbled upon your diaries once. But then we moved, and I don’t know where you hide them anymore. So I’m kinda stuck in the middle of the tale.
“Well, well, well… Looks like we know very little of each other to be part of the same family, Mr. Chew. Or should I call you Doctor?”
Jun disappears from the room, not caring for Joshua, who wants to say something to him. Even if he couldn’t move at this dazzling speed, he would’ve been able to escape the situation with equal grace.
That’s the way he is.
“Welcome to Forks, then.”
•••
“So… the new renters are a piece of shit.” your friend Cheol says. It's nice to catch up after a whole summer apart, not seeing or hearing anything from him.
Your ankles ache from the cold wind that bites as you walk the last stretch to school.
“That’s not what I said,” you explain. “The doctors were very nice to me. But the young ones… This guy Jun was in a terrible mood and treated everyone like shit. The other brother was…”
Threatening? But gut-wrenchingly beautiful? Eyes so deep like sinking ships after crashing with an iceberg?
“…a bit serious, I don’t know. When the doctors asked me if there was a highschool nearby, I thought I'd get to make some friends.”
“Are you saying I’m not enough of a friend?”
Okay, that was a low blow and you need to respond to it.
“The whole summer you went missing. So yes, at some point your friendship felt short for me.”
Many years of friendship taught you that you can open up with Cheol whenever you feel sad or lonely. You arrive at school and identify some of the friends he spent the whole summer with. A sight escapes your mouth. You love the guys, but you kinda wish your alone time with Cheol would have lasted longer.
And he notices.
“We can hang out later. Just you and me,” he promises, grabbing both of your hands. “We can sneak and spy on this jackasses’ house. Then you’ll watch them nose-picking and realize they’re not that big of a deal.”
“Voyeurism? That 's the date?”
Cheol pinches your nose in between his fingers and smiles playfully. Same old smile. Same old gesture that makes you feel safe. Even after a whole summer of not knowing what the hell is going on in his head.
“I know you. Don’t act like you don’t like to get into other people’s lives.”
Touché. You admit there’s a certain rush of adrenaline growing in your veins whenever you think about getting into your new renters’ intimacy. There's a certain power that comes with knowing about other people's secrets. Even when you don’t plan to use any of those against them.
“I’ll think about it.”
“I take it as a yes.”
“Take it as a maybe I'd rather go grab some coffee and not do such creepy things!”
You hit your friend in the arm playfully. When they see you coming, the gang welcomes you with a hug and some cheering. Hoshi tells you about how your best friend drank his blood’s weight in beer and none of the parties were near as entertaining as when you are there to join them.
You don’t believe him. You know he’s only saying this to make you feel better. But you have nothing against white lies when they serve their purpose.
“Maybe invite me next time?” you say, knowing that you are asking for the impossible.
Soonyoung looks at Dino, who answers without saying a word. Cheol pulls you closer to him. Silent and almost surrounding you with his arms.
“I really don’t think you’d like it,” Soonyoung says. “Plus you’ve been busy training, from what I heard.”
Of course. Training. You are not sure what Soonyoung must have heard about it, or who he must have heard it from. But this summer, you have been leaving your house at five in the morning everyday with the intention of running your sacred five miles before seven a.m—or whatever number of miles you could do before starting to feel like you’re about to pass out. It has been awesome; wind whipping your skin and not a single thought crossing your head. Just a pleasant sensation of hurt that would leave your legs shaking and your mind blank.
After that, you’d return home just in time to give your auntie her meds.
And then you’d like to run away again.
“Are you getting into a competition or something?” Dino asks.
“Nah. I was just doing it to clear my mind. But who knows… I’m fast.”
“Maybe I could help your train then”
Around the corners, or maybe even a couple of blocks away, there’s a soul with the extramundane ability of hearing your thoughts and sayings with just the gaze of your silhouette.
“Hum… who the hell are you?” Seungcheol asks him.
He wasn't there just minutes ago. You must have been too lost in your own thoughts as the sight of your neighbor makes your heart skip a beat.
Maybe he wants you to introduce him?
“Guys, this is Jun. My auntie rented the house to his family, so he and his brother are new here.”
“Great way to introduce yourself, mate. You’re an asshole, from what I heard?”
You step over your friend’s foot, hoping to subtly silent him. Damn, Seungcheol has a big mouth.
“Actually, I’m here to apologize,” Jun says, much to your surprise. And then he looks at you like no one else is there. “My manners weren’t the best. We had a long trip from California so I’m sure you’ll understand.”
“California? You’re a ghost, man.”
Ignoring Soonyoung’s comment, your neighbor continues trying to apologize.
“I just wanted to let you know that whatever neighborly thing you need, you can count on my family and me.”
Just by the way they’re silent, analyzing every bit of him but actually finding nothing, you can tell that the guys already hate Jun without even knowing him.
And for that, you feel relieved.
“Thank you, Jun. I really appreciate it.”
“My pleasure.”
•••
You live in a place so different than Mr. Chwe and Mr Hong’s new house. It only has a few rooms; none of them fancy and only spacious enough for you to sleep and change in there. The little wooden cabin remains hidden in between the trees, all of them prominent enough to prevent your house from being in plain sight. Rain has to make an effort to fall in between thick leaves. And if it wasn’t because of the oscillating movement of your auntie’s chair, Joshua would´t have found it.
He has always been a good neighbor. It’s a signature part of the made up story he tells about himself every time his life changes. So there he is, standing on the porch of your house with a basket of freshly baked cookies in hand. He expects to find you there and maybe ask you a couple of questions about the Boo family and your relationship with them.
“You didn’t have to” you say, receiving the basket in your hands with guilt wrinkling your eyebrows. “Really. I feel terrible. I don’t have anything to give you in return.”
“You’ve given more than enough. This is just a thank you. To you and your aunt.”
Some persistent raindrops have started to pierce through the trees.
“Come in, I insist” you say, opening the door fully even though it’s kinda messy inside. You haven’t found the time to clean up and embarrassment shows in the crimson red of your plumpy cheeks. “You won’t make it to the lodge before the rain. And I was about to make some coffee to warm up anyways.”
Joshua knows perfectly that he will be able to reach the lodge even before the next drop of rain. Despite that, he decides to enter your house and take a seat at your table, waiting for the cloudburst to stop, like any normal person. In front of him, there’s a cup of coffee. He asked for it without sugar or milk because he wouldn’t be able to enjoy those flavors if you put them in there anyways. Of course, the story he tells is different. It’s easier to explain he’s grown accustomed to preparing his coffee bitter in the rush of his night guards.
“So, California…”
Your friend Hoshi’s observation over Jun had been rude but sharp. California’s sun had rejected Joshua’s family in an inexplicable way.
“Yes, we stayed there for a short time,” he answers. For him, that is not a lie. Ten years really is a short time. “We have a condition. It makes us sensitive to the sun. So long term wasn’t an option.”
“Oh, I’m so sorry for that...”
“It's okay. We just have to be careful. Forks seems like the perfect place for that.”
“Trust me. Forks can give you a lot of trouble but sunny days won’t be one.”
Joshua takes a sip of his coffee. It doesn’t taste like anything, but it’s reassuring to see you enjoy the cookies he baked but can’t taste.
“A lot of trouble?” He asks, eyes full of curiosity. “What do you mean by that?”
Coming from California and —from what Vernon told you— previously New York, you imagine your neighbor has no idea of the consequences of living in a place like Forks.
“Well, a small town can be a vast hell if you don’t keep things to yourself,” you explain. “Forks is amazing. But there’s only a few habitants and they all get bored easily, so rumors fly.”
Joshua’s well aware of how deadly rumors can be. Especially when truth revolves around them.
“Do you have secrets to entertain us with, Mr. Hong?” you mock him, feeling a little more comfortable around your neighbor who’s not only a kind person but also a great baker.
His eyes get all wrinkly when he smiles.
“I’m afraid we’re gonna bore you all,” he answers “And please don’t call me Mr. Hong.”
“Fair enough.” You say, while cleaning leftover cookies from the corner of your mouth.
“What about you, do you have secrets?”
You laugh at the question. Maybe it’s because you know the answer damn well.
“Of course. We all do.”

Welcome to the 'Best Character with [X] surname' polls!
This is where I take several characters from different Chinese media (mostly cnovels and cdrama) and run a poll on which one is the 'best'. What does best mean? It's up to you! Whether you love them, are intrigued by their characters, love to hate them, or they're your '2 second blorbos whose personality you made up wholesale', these are all reasons for you to vote for your favs!
NB: the surnames are not exactly the same in all the cases, as often they will be a different character. I am, however, grouping them all together otherwise things got more complicated.
If you can't find a surname, it's because I couldn't find enough candidates (at least 3 from 3 distinct medias) to compete. Feel free to submit candidates!
I will be posting several polls at a time, so do come back and check this masterpost to remember which polls are ongoing, who the winners are, and who's coming up next!

Analyzing Chinese Names: Syllables & Tones
It’s been a while since my last post about Chinese names. In one previous post, I wrote that I wanted to explore tones and syllable structure in Chinese names. And now here we are. I ended up shifting my focus a bit throughout the process, but I’m still excited to be sharing my results.
These questions/ideas guided this post:
Sometimes you don’t know how a name is written because you’ve only heard it or seen a transliteration. Setting aside the written language (Chinese characters), what syllables/sounds are most common?
I have read about naming conventions regarding tones. For example, using a mix of tones (instead of reusing the same tone) gives names a dynamic flow. So how are tones distributed in names?
Buckle up, everyone. This is gonna be a long one.
About the Data
I started with the data from my previous in-depth post about Chinese names. Like before, most names are from contestants on idol shows or members of idol groups. I added more names in this category and also some names of athletes (since for athletes it is also relatively easy to discern gender). In total, there were 4361 names (2340 female, 2021 male). Most names belong to individuals from Mainland China, but there are also names belonging to people from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Singapore. See my past post for more details.
I had to do a lot of work to process the name data for this analysis. I will add some details towards the end of this post for those who are interested. I just want to note here that:
I did some work to account for tone sandhi for yi 一. As a result, you may see this character labeled as 1st, 2nd, or 4th tone.
I also applied tone change rules when there were multiple 3rd tones in a row (but not for surnames as it shouldn’t change there).
I had to correct for duoyinzi 多音字. Most of the time, it’s pretty clear which pronunciation is used, but there are some ambiguous cases.
I use standard Mainland pronunciation, not Taiwanese pronunciation. Characters like 薇 are pronounced differently in these locations.
I’m an imperfect human and probably didn’t catch everything. So keep that in mind.
Given Names (Overall)
First we will examine the overall results for all syllables across all given names to get a nice overview. Then we will dive into single-character given names vs. two-character given names.

Two-Character Given Names (双名)
Now for two-character given names. There were 3413 total (about 78%). First I will look at these given names as a whole. Then I will separately examine the 1st syllable and 2nd syllable positions.
I was very interested to see the most common name going by sound and not characters. Living in the US, I often see transliterated Chinese names with no characters in sight. This effectively “merges” names that are distinct in Chinese. All I can do is guess what the characters (and thus tones) are.

Surnames
Because the majority of the population shares a relatively small number of surnames, I decided to only look at tones.
Surname Tones
List format: Tone / count
2nd / 2047
1st / 1072
3rd / 640
4th / 602
Just take a look at the top 20 surnames in China. Clearly, the 2nd tone is dominating. There’s only one 4th tone surname!
Data Processing
I segmented the names so each character was alone. I just did this in Google Sheets, because that’s where I store the names I’ve gathered. Then I exported the data in CSV format.
I discarded names longer than 3 characters—because these are less common, I decided not to address them to make things easier for myself.
I used the pinyin library for Python to obtain pinyin for each character. I used the numerical format (ie. “ni3”) so that I could easily obtain the syllable w/o tone, the syllable w/ tone, and the tone. I also utilized pandas and numpy. This was done in Google Colabs. I made the unfortunate mistake of not commenting my code, and I wrote it a while ago, so I now I have no idea what is going on (whoops).
Next I dumped this data into a tibble in R for the real analysis.
For as many 多音字 as I could identify, I had to check and potentially fix the pinyin transcription. For example, I had to make sure that 曾 was going to zeng1, not ceng2. Honestly, I’m sure I missed something, but this was so, so tedious. This is also the step where I accounted for the 3rd tone tone change and yi 一 tone change rules.
I used a Python script to convert the toneless pinyin to my own syllable notation system. This was tricky to figure out, but fortunately I was able to use some code I already had from a project I was involved in during college.
I added the syllable info to my giant tibble in R. Because everything was separated into surname, given name 1st character, and given name 2nd character, I also had to create some new columns to combine information to get information for whole given names and full names.
Then it was basically a lot of pipes. Here’s an example: names %>% filter(nchar(names$name) > 2) %>% group_by(given_struc) %>% summarise(count = n()) %>% arrange(desc(count)) %>% view()
Bonus Lists
There were some other things I was curious about but felt didn’t have a place in the main body of this post.
I wanted to see which syllables were represented by the most unique characters in my dataset. If the number of unique characters is high, that’s a sign that I would probably have trouble guessing which character someone’s name contains.
I was also curious about open vs. closed syllables and closed syllables ending in /n/ vs. /ŋ/. For instance, take a pair of names like Yixin and Xinyi or Xinling and Lingxin. These names consist of the same syllables in a different order. I wanted to know which order is more common.

12-31 (CST) Year in Review space notes
This was a Twitter space held by QuelleVous et al. to review the events and exposés from the past year. The recording can be found [here].
[notes I’ve done on previous spaces] [glossary of names]
We had a good start to the year with the interview between Zhang Zhehan and Li Xuezheng. 🥺 (recorded on 2021-12-30, released 2022-01-01)
Li Xuezheng was muted on 01-10.
The Instagram was reactivated three days later.
The Zhang Sanjian WeChat was made another three days after that, 01-16. This showed a SIGNIFICANT difference in “Zhang Zhehan’s” personality less than three weeks after the interview.
The WeChat account itself was registered on 2021-12-24 in Shenzhen. Zhang Zhehan’s police report was filed on the same day in Beijing.
Metadata of several of the hat photos dated them to 01-10, the day Li Xuezheng was muted.
Also on 01-10, Xie Yihua mentioned rolling out the brand in her group chat with fans. She didn’t respond to any questions asking about Li Xuezheng’s wellbeing.
Xie Yihua has only met Li Xuezheng once, when she and Su Shifu tried to convince him to tell Zhang Zhehan not to sue CAPA in December.
The tea shop is the reason many people initially trusted the WeChat account. At the time most of us did truly believe that the shop was owned by Zhang Mama. - Zhang Mama’s company was the tea shop’s pu’er supplier, this is no longer the case. No one has yet shown any pu’er cakes that were produced by Zhang Mama’s company in 2022. - Zhang Mama only became a majority share holder of this company in 2021-04. - No one who went to the tea shop prior to 813 mentioned meeting Zhang Mama there, only Chen Ahyi who would say that Zhang Mama had just left / was there yesterday / would be there tomorrow. - The fake Lufei account (2021-11-14) also came from the tea shop, as did the rumor that Zhang Mama listened to the haizhes’ end of year livestream. - Some CP fans didn’t trust the tea shop early on. The biggest issue they raised what that it seemed to be using Zhang Zhehan’s elements as a marketing strategy, which they thought was out of character for him.
An early essay the WeChat posted claimed to have gotten an antidepressant perscription from Zhang Peichao (aka Doc Creepy). - Zhang Peichao has no legitimate authority to do so—he has a PhD in philosophy with a focus on psychological theory, and he actually works as a counsellor (no medical training required, he has a bachelor’s in general biology) and writes self help books. - Standard doctor’s notes in China now include notes on whether the patient has had COVID, been in contact with someone who has had COVID, etc. This was not present in the photograph of the perscription included with the essay. - Zhang Peichao gave talks for an American university that does not have an APA approved psychology department (which also had a cult scandal a few years ago), and he is on a Hong Kong psychology council that is not well known or respected. - He made some troubling statements on his Facebook about mainland China which have now been deleted. - He’s primarily based in Shenzhen. - He also wrote an essay after Word of Honor aired saying that Wen Kexing was attracted to Zhou Zishu because he had mommy issues, and said rude things about Gong Jun’s acting. - A lot of the early essays posted by Zhang Sanjian mirror his way of thinking and writing.
Zhang Peichao is offline aquaintances with Hao Jingfang, a sci-fi author who early on said similar things about Gong Jun’s acting. This year she encouraged whalers to attack Gong Jun and claimed she had tried to contact lawyers to sue him for encouraging cyberviolence against Zhang Zhehan. She’s currently muted for politically sensitive posts. She also had work of hers included in an anthology alongside Bai Ying’s boss.
Bai Ying is a reporter for Xinhua News. - On 2021-12-01 Xinhua published an article co-authored by Bai Ying interviewing an unnamed CAPA representative who supported their immoral artist lists. Fans discovered upon digging that Bai Ying himself was a member of CAPA’s ethics committee and in fact had interviewed himself. - His career goal is to be a playwright, not a reporter, and he has written several plays funded by CAPA. - Fans found his Weibo account, which included posts that were sexually suggestive and critical of China and the CCP. - He has continued publishing similar articles throughout this year. - He has another online persona that was running with the righteous passersby, claiming to be a female retired CCBI official. He wrote a long essay in 2021-12 that was very sympathetic to fans. The account became known after it kept trying to gift Li Xuezheng money during one of his livestreams, which Bai Ying claimed was accidental. - He’s participated in nearly every activity smearing Gong Jun and related to Zhang Sanjian.
Another reporter, Han Dandong, has also written things for CAPA. - He has a side account on Weibo that liked and reposted both his own articles and things from righteous passersby. - That account also is used to sell homeopathic crystals and includes posts making sexual comments about young women. - He had an article about AI face changing technology published in Legal Daily on 2022-12-30. People realized that the Weibo post for this turned on comment selection and left a comment tagging Xie Yihua as the top comment. This was briefly pinned as Legal Daily’s featured post. - (Legal Daily itself has done a number of other sketchy things related to 813, including publishing multiple articles slandering Zhang Zhehan and implying the Instagram’s validity. It is likely that this is the work of only select people within Legal Daily, given the size of the organization.)
Many of the people on Weibo who have run away after being exposed are still active on side accounts liking posts related to current happenings.
Fandom is one of the largest markets in China, with huge amounts of money generated from it. This is why so much work goes into embedding fake fans in fandom, manipulating fan behaviour, etc. Our fandom is not exceptional in this respect.
The actions we’ve seen from the Zhang Sanjian scam gang have also been seen by scams aimed at other artist’s fans (badly photoshopped advertisements, peddling cheap merchandise, etc.)
Zhang Zhehan’s fandom was ripe for manipulation after 813 due to the trauma, confusion, and information blackout caused by it. The fact that his fandom is still so active despite his absense is astounding.
Lao Ahyi is a director at Songcheng, an executive unit of CAPA. - She was (likely still is) part of Songcheng’s strategy to expand Songcheng into doing online IPs. - She’s been planted since 2021-08. Her story was that she was an older lady who had just given birth and was fighting for Zhang Zhehan, and there were rumors put out by Umbrella that she was Zhang Zhehan’s cousin. - She has not been visibly active since she was exposed in July, but is still on side accounts.
The most recent person to flee was Shirley (the one who claimed that Zhang Sanjian had been specially invited to the Shanghai Theatre Academy performance), who deleted her Weibo account one hour after being exposed. Deleting a Weibo is a fairly lengthy process, it can’t be done this fast by regular users—the fastest method is by customer service, sending them pictures of your ID, and applying with them to delete your account, and even this usually takes at least 24 hours but can take up to a week. For Shirley to be able to do it so quickly means she is in direct contact with someone at Weibo who was able to do it for her.
A lot of the people who have been exposed are from the education sector, which has suffered massively due to tutors no longer being able to work during the pandemic.
If the scale of the current scam seems unbelievable, remember that 813 itself was a huge scam involving planted fans, water armies, bought out journalists, etc. If CAPA is capable of that, why not this?
Chinese livestreams are hugely profitable to both livestreamers and platforms, it’s a multi-trillion yuan industry. CAPA absolutely have the funds to be financing the scam.
Sophie - Was born to a not so well off family. In college she met a sugar daddy and became one of his girlfriends in Shanghai. He’s a very successful business man who has dated stars. - She wrote about this on an account that she seems to have lost the password to, on which she talked a lot about the other girlfriends and her life experiences. This is all information she posted publicly herself. - The sugar daddy broke with her after deciding to only date more famous women. Sophie then met a bank worker, known online as Umbrella, by whom she has a daughter. He refused to marry her until she had a son. The two of them have a Weibo account where they only talk about and post pictures with the son, never the daughter. - Umbrella has a get rich quick mentality but has horrible investment sense that has led to them being in debt. - They planted themselves in the Word on Honor fandom in 2021-03 after Umbrella was laid off. - She seems to listen to these spaces. 👋👋 - Sophie filters people for Xie Yihua—no one talks to Xie Yihua without talking to her first. - Sophie tried to be on the CP side first but people didn’t like her lol. - Prior to 813, Sophie was involved in the Wang Peiwen fake girlfriend rumors. She private messaged Danny, one of the people in the yacht photo, asking if Zhang Zhehan had a girfriend. Danny immediately replied saying that Zhang Zhehan was single but did not deny that he was the person on the boat with his face covered in the photo. The fact that this was Sophie (posting on a side account) was unintentionally revealed by one of the big whaler accounts. - On her CPF account, Sophie helped to spread the fake girlfriend rumors: she was the one who identified the girl in the photo as Wang Peiwen. Screenshots she posted claiming to be Wang Peiwen messaging Zhang Zhehan’s studio on WeChat were actually of an account run by Sophie. - Sophie is very bad about giving herself away more through the ways she reacts to people exposing her.
A consistent behaviour with the scam gang is them shitting on Gong Jun and trying to blame him for the things that have happened to Zhang Zhehan.
Prayjane (involved in the girlfriend rumors) has likely been involved because her husband is not doing well financially. People like Lexus and Peter don’t have clear motives other than being clout chasers.
Fake Uncle wrote an essay in 2021-07 (on the same day Sophie posted the girlfriend “clairifcations”) claiming to be Zhang Zhehan’s uncle. - He claimed to have been there when Zhang Zhehan made his hole in one in golf. Reciepts from the hotel do not support this. - He claimed to be a retired police officer who was helping Zhang Zhehan with research for Formed Police Unit. He never went through police training let alone was an actual officer, and the book on another police officer that he claimed to have co-authored was not written by him, the publishing house had never heard of him. - He’s friends with Lao Ahyi, she deleted one of her Weibo accounts after Fake Uncle was exposed. - The essay led to a lot of rumors against Zhang Zhehan post-813. - The essay included an entire paragraph about the tea shop.
We now know that there were people in Zhang Zhehan’s team prior to August who are not to be trusted, so it’s probable that they intentionally gave him bad guidance on how to respond to the various smears going on.
Like Sophie, Lexus’s entire life is online because he’s posted about it himself. Zhang Zhehan had basically everything that Lexus wants (fame, a singing career, good at golf, handsome, etc.). Despite the fact that he has gained some notoriety through his connection to Zhang Sanjian, he is openly resentful of the fact that people only pay attention to him because of that.
Zhang Su (Susu) - His entire persona as fans knew him was basically created by fanfic authors and what he said himself. The only times he had publicly interacted with Zhang Zhehan were during the bike trip after they graduated (which Susu did not finish) and on Taste of Time in 2018. - He’s signed to an MCN connected to CAPA and his boss is friends with CAPA executives. He also has professional connections with Xie Yihua’s sister.
The way that some of the men in the scam gang (Lexus, Master Wu, Peng Lihu, Su Shifu, Zhang Peichao) behave with female fans is incredibly predatory. A lot of other fake fans have also been found to be middle aged men posing as young women. If any whalers do read these notes, please be aware of this and be cautious. - There was one point where they encouraged whalers who had bought the brand’s necklaces to post photos of themselves wearing them in revealing tops and bras.
Candy break! Everyone’s favourite candy from this year:
The hexagon ring behind the glass in Gong Jun’s birthday “leave of absense” letter.
Valentine’s Day, Gong Jun’s 1129 1314 511 kadian, and the photos from where Zhang Zhehan had once taken photos that can be overlayed to make them stand together.
The Anon account, in particular how Zhang Sanjian has reacted to the account regardless of the Anon account’s actual validity.
The fact that Xie Yihua still can’t get in touch with Zhang Zhehan meanwhile Gong Jun has been quite openly travelling with him.
How Xie Yihua never responded to anyone’s investigations until QuelleVous revealed that her Baidu Baike page had been edited on 813, when Xie Yihua panicked and posted a long essay refuting it. Her overreaction is the reason QuelleVous et al. became known to the Chinese side of the fandom.
The picture from Yunnan of “Gong Jun” from behind in a hoodie where the anatomical proportions of his height and shoulders match Zhang Zhehan’s more than Gong Jun’s. Other observations like the thumb, the photos being cut so that the butt isn’t visible, how illogical it is that Gong Jun would change outfits in the middle of taking photos. (It could have been different days, but why would you go to the same place at 5am on two different days?)
In Gong Jun’s belated birthday livestream he mentioned his parents going home the day after he got the cakes while he stayed in Yunnan, so who took that photo of him at the luxury hotel?
When Gong Jun was replying in the birthday AMA and there was two distinct writing styles being used.
How Zhang Sanjian posted an essay a couple days later talking about watching the movie Gong Jun had mentioned in the AMA. Pick a narrative bro, do you hate him or not?
QuelleVous says Xiao Yu bought a motorcycle this year.
Gong Jun’s bodyguard (”Bond-dage”?) could probably tell a lot of stories lol. He appears in a lot of fansite photos but there are times when he’s absent, so there are rumors that the two of them share him. There was also a time during the Legend of AnLe filming where the bodyguard came over to look at the CPF in the mascot costume.
(This humble note taker’s favourite candy was the Ritz Carlton rumor, where Zhang Zhehan and Gong Jun supposedly were seen outside the hotel on Zhang Zhehan’s lunar birthday. 🥺)
Back to serious stuff:
For the Instagram bike trip in August, plane tickets were bought for Zhang Zhehan, Zhang Mama, and Xiao Yu to go to where it started but none of them actually showed up for the flights. Xie Yihua and co. have stopped leaking flight itineraries since QuelleVous revealed this.
Some pretty well known paparazzi have been paid to spread the low quality “chance meeting” photos of Zhang Sanjian. (Fansites at least put up the pretense of being fans and showing fan loyalty, paparazzi just sell to the highest bidder. Why are you trusting them?)
The CPF who initially leaked the 03-01 airport photos that we all thought were Zhang Zhehan (they were not) deleted her account after being questioned about it.
Wendy was the one who told everyone to listen to Su Shifu’s podcast after 813, and she was asking everyone to spread it around.
Sophie was the one who outed the fact that Su Shifu had been fired, using his real name.
Thank you to the Ding Dongs and everyone who has worked to share clarifications about Zhang Zhehan this year. Thank you to everyone who has stayed here and stayed strong for Zhang Zhehan. Thank you to Gong Jun for all the little rays of sunshine.
Let’s hope 2023 brings Zhang Zhehan’s official return, that Gong Jun stays safe and successful, that both of them are able to do whatever they want, and that many many people go to jail.
Happy New Year everyone! 🥳🥳
