Tonight’s show, directed by the incredible @alexandriawailesofficial started with visions of creating Deaf-centered spaces virtually. Everything platform we engage with online centers hearing people, from how audio is visualized to options for communication. What Alexandria and her collaborators have created is one of a kind, a curated visual and aural experience inviting us into a different “reading” of an online platform. Join us at 7pm. 4 years ago these clowns brought air guitar realness into the black box theater world. It included a) throwing toilet paper rolls at the audience b) confetti and a construction fan and c) light-up sneakers and a fur coat. Tonight, we ride again, with a participatory air guitar extravaganza featuring 8 national and world air guitar champions from across the country. See you at 7pm. An air guitar jam with strangers. A scavenger hunt through your home. A meditation on solitude and Zoom fatigue by BIPOC Deaf artists. An interactive game imagining utopia(s). I have been searching for inspiration these past few weeks and months, and have found joy and hope in collaboration with artists and humans who both inspire and ask bigass questions. This week, our residency starts at @arsnova with two-time world air guitar champion Matt "Airistotle" Burns. The big idea of these events? What does it mean to participate, especially when we're gathering in virtual space? These artists are actively seeking new and re-imagined ways to gather in community, fueled by invention, curiosity, creation, and beauty. Each of these events requires your active presence. Oh, and they're only $10. Join us! Ticket info in bio. (at Ars Nova) https://www.instagram.com/p/COdf1MiDUV3/?igshid=1l8ip6w00d9lx

Within the numerous executive orders Biden has signed the past two days, this one is MAJOR and has impactful language to shape the coming months and years. For the President to acknowledge on Day One that systemic racism is EMBEDDED in how government functions is major. “Because advancing equity requires a systemic approach to embedding fairness in decision-making processes, executive departments and agencies must recognize and work to redress inequities in their policies and programs that serve as barriers to equal opportunity.” This order requires that federal agencies and executive departments investigate whether their programs or policies perpetuate these barriers. The way equity is defined is clearly laid out in the order. And within six months a report will be delivered detailing all best practices that then can be implemented and scaled. Link to Executive Order in bio. Shout-out to Sara Rosenbaum for the heads up. Would love to know others’ thoughts about how the impact of this might be felt. https://www.instagram.com/p/CKW9vtGD4mR/?igshid=fupipwktputz

Four years ago today. And the work continues! I like to think GET LOUD from a felt jacket cutout to inaugural JLo really helps connect the dots. https://www.instagram.com/p/CKUpSqGjA4-/?igshid=q3fxg5ch1dd5

Thrilling conversations happening now regarding representation, funding models, the Federal Theatre Project, and undoing systemic inequities built into arts and culture structures. Links in bio to sign our open letter AND to get involved in Be An Arts Hero. #Repost @beanartshero with @get_repost ・・・ In December, directors @rachel.chavkin and @jennykoons wrote a letter to the incoming administration to advocate for significant government investment in Arts & Culture through the appointment of a Secretary of Arts and Culture. Their letter received over 10,000 signatures. We applaud them and are inspired by their words and their advocacy. Friends. We have decided to postpone our January 19th PEP RALLY/TEACH-IN. We’ve had a wonderful response and are excited to share resources and strength. That said, it feels essential that we meet with space in our hearts and minds to imagine a radically more equitable field and a more just world. In light of last week’s assault on the Capital, and equally in light of the rapidly accumulating and shifting information about inauguration events, we feel it is best to postpone. We will still host a brief event at 8pm EST on Tuesday, January 19th to commemorate the night and create space for a moment of fellowship and centering. A new date for our Pep Rally/Teach-in is coming soon! We are eager to share and cheer and coalition-build with you all.
