As a follow-up to Junior Quartet Heightcanons, here is Junior Quartet Agecanons (with birthdays!):
Sizhui's canon birthday is January 12th and to me he's the oldest.
Lan Jingyi's canon birthday is August 24th, and since Sizhui's birthday is typically before the Lunar New Year, he's technically a year younger than Sizhui but by American counting also the same age.
Ouyang Zizhen does not have a canon birthday, but I read somewhere that for characters without birthdays it's supposed to be the release date of the chapter in which they first appeared? That makes his birthday August 10th, and I would say he's a year younger than Jingyi, technically two years younger than Sizhui.
Jin Ling's canon birthday is November 21st and we know he was born when Sizhui was 3-4, I prefer 3 almost 4. So he's four years (3 years 10 months) younger than Sizhui, technically three years younger than Jingyi, and two years younger than Zizhen.
This makes Zizhen the middlest child of the four (two years younger than the oldest, two years older than the youngest), which explains why people always forget about him. 😂
So in fics using the 13 year gap between Wei Wuxian's death and resurrection (which are most of mine), this would make the ages in the present 17 (Sizhui), 16/17 (Jingyi), 15 (Zizhen) and 13 (Jin Ling).
In fics using the 16 year gap from cql, the ages are 20 (Sizhui), 19/20 (Jingyi), 18 (Zizhen), and 16 (Jin Ling).
For those wondering about Sizhui's age being 4 when Wei Wuxian died, even though I said 3 years 10 months for when Jin Ling was born.... It depends on whether you think Wei Wuxian was going to Jin Ling's 1 month or 100 day celebration. If it was his 1 month, Sizhui was still 3. If it was his 100 day, that's a little over three months, so Sizhui was 4 by then. Personally, I usually go by the 100 day so that's how the present ages are calculated!
Please don't fight about which canon is "correct" in the notes, this post is not about that. This post is about having fun regardless of what canon does or doesn't say.

The funniest “Jin Ling damsel in distress moment” is actually in the donghua on dafan mountain when Lan Jingyi kicks Jin Ling into the cave with so much force (infamous Lan Clan hamstrings?) that he just disappears??? I mean logically, he probably just fell on his face then got up and was like “screw this loser” and started exploring the cave for the heck of it but it’s so much funnier to imagine LJY kicking him so hard that he just rolled through the entire cave system for like 5 minutes straight until he crashed into the dancing goddess statue

"I want Hanguang-Jun to teach me how to swear with my facial expressions only."
"Jingyi, what the hell, it's 6 am. What are you even talking about?"
"So you know how when he hears some bullshit he closes his eyes and takes a deep breath and has a certain look in his eyes after? Senior Wei says that's Hanguang-Jun speak for 'you motherfucker'. I wanna learn how to do that."
"Jingyi you openly say 'you motherfucker' at least like 3 times a day."
"Yeah and I get punished for it! So I want to learn how to do it quietly!"
"That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard..."
"It's ridiculous now, but when I get to tell sect leader Yao he's a bitch in Hanguang-Jun language, you'll envy me!"

Snippet of yet another WIP below. Time travel, Sizhui & Jingyi (maybe Sizhui/Jingyi later?), Yiling Patriarch era
“Xian-gege calls me luoluo too!” the child announced. “I know,” Sizhui said, smiling a little. “Did your gege bury you in the dirt and tell you it would make you grow up tall and strong, too? Did he tell you that friends grew from radishes just like you did?” Warily, Wei Wuxian let Chenqing fall to his side. “Mm-hm! He did!” Wen Yuan said, bouncing up and down with happiness. “Did your friend grow from a radish?” “No,” Jingyi said, “I grew from a plum pit. Only A-Yuans grow from radishes.” He glanced at Sizhui, and then back at Wei Wuxian. “Our other friends are A-Ling and A-Zhen. A-Ling grew from a lotus seed, and A-Zhen grew on a mulberry tree.” A-Yuan tugged on Wei Wuxian’s clothes. “Xian-gege! Xian-gege! We need to get a plum and a lotus and mulberries! I want an A-Ling and an A-Zhen and a -” He glanced at Jingyi. Jingyi smiled at the miniature version of his closest friend. “Lan Jingyi,” he said, bowing. “And an A-Yi!” A-Yuan finished. “Oh my god,” Jingyi said as he straightened, not nearly quiet enough, “he’s so cute.”
luoluo = 萝萝 luó luó (radish, but doubled to make it a cutesy diminutive, so closer to "my baby radish") plum sometimes represents a strong personality, lotus is obviously for jyl, and mulberry is bc the city nearest the mountain oyzz's surname comes from is known for its silk exports and domestic silkworms prefer mulberry leaves :3c

Hiiii apple!!!! I was wondering if you have any headcanons about the juniors waking up early or how they handle mornings? maybe if they were all studying at the cloud recesses or something and have to wake up at the same time as the lans 🤣
OH YES, YES I DO. ✨
I’ll start with the one who’s obviously the best at handling mornings:
• Lan Sizhui
He’s the unofficial leader of the ducklings, so of course he’d be up at 5am sharp with zero complaints but he’d also be the one waking the others up if they sleep in, not to annoy them but to make sure they don’t get in trouble.
The majority of the time, he wakes up feeling refreshed and ready to tackle the day but I do headcanon that he occasionally tries to stay up a little late to read, study or practice guqin and there’s just some mornings where he wishes he could sleep in—because let’s be real, no matter who you are, we all have those days.
• Lan Jingyi
He wakes up at 5 for two reasons: food and because he has to. Otherwise, he’d definitely wake up at the crack of noon and eat chicken for breakfast every morning if he could.
Unfortunately, no matter how long he’s been waking up at the same time, his internal alarm clock just doesn’t set for 5. Usually, Lan Sizhui finds him sprawled out on his bed like a starfish with his mouth hanging open, still very much passed out and has to shake him awake at the last minute to save him from their seniors—even if that means smacking him with a pillow or pushing him off the bed.
• Ouyang Zizhen
Oh, my dear sweet Zizhen. He’s literally Nie Huaisang with a filter. He won’t complain, but he definitely doesn’t want to wake up at 5. He rises like a zombie on the verge of tears, rolls out of bed like a sloth and falls back asleep at breakfast.
Lan Sizhui has to keep waking him up so he gets a chance to eat his food before Lan Jingyi tries to steal it, despite getting smacked on the hand with Lan Sizhui’s chopsticks every time.
• Jin Ling
God save whoever wakes up our Prince of peonies because he is not a morning person in the slightest. The only one who can even attempt to wake him up without risking injury is Lan Sizhui and even then, Jin Ling hates him for it.
But he knows Lan Sizhui is only looking out for him, so gets up and sits in bed with the blanket wrapped around him, staring at the wall with puffy, murderous eyes for several minutes before begrudgingly getting ready for the day.
He doesn’t talk to anyone before he’s had his tea, and anyone who tries to talk to him before he’s had his tea?
May they rest in peace. 🪦🙏 (RIP Jingyi)
