curse of strahdanya has officially taken over my brain! alongside arcane…season two is SO GOOD SO FARR please go watch it if you haven’t. holy shit yall it does not disappoint

spoilers for up to and the entirety of episode 7 of cos — ill mainly be talking about character dynamics (mostly shepnax) but major events and plot developments will be explicitly discussed as well, so, if you’re not there yet, please don’t keep reading (getting spoilered for this stuff is not worth it i promise)

im sorry in advance. im not even done writing everything yet and its already very long

the way i see it, episode 7 is a major turning point for not only the whole story but inter-party relationships as well. i’ll be organizing this a little bit so it’s less text-wall-y (hopefully)

shepherd

there’s the raven mother they find nailed to the wall — the culprit being strahdanya. this definitely fueled the hate that all of the party had for her, but especially shepherd. he literally screams out in anguish and, later, calls strahdanya a coward and bitch — something we’ve never seen shepherd do before.* i think the events in the beginning of ep 7 is what really cemented his and the party’s objective: destroy strahdanya. before, i sensed some kind of ‘wiggle room’: the party would be willing to work with her a bit, though only for a very short amount of time and would probably backstab her. but after witnessing all that? strahdanya is irredeemably evil, not worthy of consideration / sympathy / courtesy, and i think it finally fully dawned on them all

*i also love how much raw emotion shepherd expresses throughout the campaign. the rest of the party has their moments too (i can immediately think of kana and victoria, but im not remembering any significant ones for clayton or sarnax though i know they exist), but shepherd consistently reacts to the hellhole that is barovia in such a genuine way that it grounds the whole narrative and, to me, makes barovia that much more horrifying. in other stories or discussions of stories ive seen like this (and even in the cos party itself), the characters are largely untouched by the horrors that occur in such a setting. which, fit the characters/purpose as it might, distances the audience at least a tiny bit from the happenings of the narrative. but when you have an otherwise grounded, calm, capable individual like shepherd crack? that’s when it really hits you i think. like, the whole thing with sarnax reviving the mother? shepherd being so relieved and overcome with a multitude of feelings that his voice cracks as he holds back tears, begging the mother to rest and not do any work? it made me feel the same way, and it really drove home how wonderful this act is and how dire their situation is. shepherd (and andy by extension!) have drawn the most emotion out of me in my watch, and its possibly the main reason i enjoy his character so much

him being seemingly chosen by the silver dragon (which, again, another turning point) is very compelling in a narrative sense too because shepherd doesnt want power, he doesn’t seem to even like the idea of leading (or at least being pushed into a position of leadership). i’ll touch on it later in the shepherd and sarnax segment (if i dont forget lol, my mind is running wild while i write this)

victoria

i think strahd’s infatuation with her and the physical effects it has (kana’s cleansing ritual failing because the water becomes blood as it touches victoria) is so interesting, especially her inner conflict with her heritage and wickedness (and the distrust it sows between her and the party, at least initially)

i really enjoyed how victoria was vulnerable with kana, and how kana handled it with such care and compassion. this is also a turning point, i think, when it comes their relationship: kana promises to protect victoria, and victoria promises to fight the darkness within her; they definitely got closer after that, and their bond was deepened. i dont imagine strahd would be very happy about victoria not being enamored by her and being helped by her party, though it’s very possible that she enjoys ‘the chase’ (for the lack of a better term)

when they came across the dusk elf in the order of the silver dragon estate-thing, it’s a pretty clear parallel to victoria given her appearance, heritage, and reason for being in barovia. i could be very very wrong about this but its heavily implied victoria’s elf half is a dusk elf, which makes sense considering, again, that she’s in barovia to learn about her lineage and that dusk elves are the only elves mentioned so far. i think this is the first time she’s genuinely made progress in her goal

sarnax

sarnax’s identity revolves around gherix: his whole life is devoted to the fire lord; he’s used to communing with and praying to his god. it’s likely what kept him going in such a terrible place with such terrible odds of survival, let alone returning (which he’s convinced he will not). so when strahdanya intercepted the augury spell he was so clearly shaken. it was one of the few moments, if not the only one, where sarnax was in genuine, utter panic — the whole time shepherd repeatedly asked him if he was alright and he didn’t seem to hear those words at all. suddenly he learned that strahdanya could damage or possibly sever his connection to his god, the being his life is centered around. (kana’s comment certainly didn’t help)

but what happens after — the augury spell reading ‘weal’ and sarnax being able to revive the mother — strengthens his faith. it was tested, but he prevailed. i think he was also filled with a newfound sense of purpose, knowing that, no matter what strahd does, his god considers him worthy enough

about him and kana: episode 7 is the culmination of their slow development towards not only tolerating each other’s beliefs but to understand and embrace them, specifically with kana saying that she trusts in sarnax and his god

sarnax and shepherd

the conversation between them was my favorite moment in this episode by far. there are so many layers,

shepherd so clearly doesnt want to embody his namesake and be a leader, but the silver dragon and someone he trusts so much — sarnax — and fate itself push him in that direction, so he just does. shepherd says:

“sarnax don’t”

“no why would you-“

“why- why- why would you put this on me, why?”

“how can you say that?”

“this was just a job. i mean this was just to make sure we all got here and back safely…how did this happen?”

then, later…

“alright, alright i…okay. i…dont know what to say”

“alright…alright…okay, understood”

“sure, sure. lead the way” and, after sarnax says “no, shepherd. you lead the way, i will light the path,” “…fine.”

essentially, he sucks it up. and that’s interesting to me since shepherd shows so much emotion, so it’s clearly not a ‘men dont cry’-type ideology thing. i think it’s probably related to his desire to do good, and as well as the good doc. after all, the doc gave him his virtue name: shepherd. it only makes sense that he would be written by fate as one: a person who guides the lost through the darkness. so that’s my guess as to why he so readily accepts this burden

i think sarnax being the one to say this also played a role in it^. shepherd witnessed firsthand the power of gherix and sarnax’s wisdom, so much so that he prayed to gherix. shepherd, who was originally averse to anything religious, prayed. and i also think sarnax is shepherd’s only true friend in the party. his relationship with clayton, victoria, and kana feels like professional acquaintances — they’re comfortable with each other and certainly growing closer, but he seeks out sarnax (and sarnax does too) and both have called the other a friend or good friend, on more than one occasion for shepherd and at least one for sarnax. it’s obvious that shepherd values what sarnax has to say and cares for him.

because of that, sarnax saying that he will die in barovia (specifically that he doesn’t “believe [he has] a place back in avantris” and that “whatever it is that [they] achieve here will be [his] end” because he has “seen it in the flames”) and shepherd’s reaction hits even harder for me.

shepherd says “i’m not gonna leave you. i’m not gonna leave anyone.”

and sarnax replies “then it will be i that leaves you.”

it’s the shortest exchange, but it holds so much weight. sarnax has accepted his fate, possibly long before this. but when before sarnax took charge and led the group, shining his light, he steps back, realizing shepherd is the one who (he thinks) fits that role. he still guides, but he doesn’t lead, and he believes shepherd should. but shepherd doesn’t. shepherd’s used to following orders, as we see so many times with him and clayton (but also him and sarnax), and struggles to make decisions for the group — when they ask him where they should go, shepherd seemingly blanks and he just picks whatever as fast as he can (to get the pressure off him, i assume). and despite this, shepherd’s line reinforces what sarnax thinks: a good shepherd doesn’t leave his sheep behind, he goes after and, well, shepherds them.

and honestly the whole relationship between shepherd and sarnax. them being regarded as monsters by others, being dehumanized by, for example, vascha [?] thinking shepherd is a devil and esmeralda calling sarnax shepherd’s pet ->

shepherd answers, understably upset, “he’s not my pet, he’s a person!” i figured sarnax felt the same way, but when he was praying to gherix, he referred to shepherd as “a vessel for [gherix’s] wrath.” so that raised a question to me: does sarnax truly care for shepherd (in the way shepherd does), or does he view him as a tool? it’s interesting to think about. it could be him truly caring about shepherd and seeing him as a capable person who will have a great role in his god’s plans which, i imagine, is among the highest of honors — the first possibility in the question, but filtered through the lens of sarnax’s religious perspective (which i think is the most likely and most compelling)

and there’s the parallel with them being connected to gold and silver dragons: different, but the same. (unrelated tangent but there’s also a very interesting parallel between shepherd being chosen by the silver dragon [‘good’] and victoria being chosen by strahdanya [‘bad’])

sarnax saying “silver will unite with gold” is, on the surface, about the two dragon-gods involved in the story. but i think, on a deeper and probably unintended level, it also applies to shepherd and sarnax growing closer (as they have been since the prologue, following in the footsteps of their respective dragons, and shepherd connecting the two dragons by his faith in gherix and affinity to the silver dragon.

Cookie Run: Kingdom - Matcha Cookie Spoilers/Theory

time to spill the tea on some new content and drink deep spoiler fueled theory cider

so Dark Enchantress created Matcha Cookie, and either deliberately left something out or forgot something during the process. Thus making Matcha Cookie flawed from "birth" (she knows it and can't help it, and gets upset when the topic of her "missing ingredient" gets brought up) and feels kinship with other living dough experiments that are considered failures, this would explain a bit of their Ovenbreak connection with Matcha regarding DE as family.

It is also apparent that Matcha Cookie dislikes(even hates) being disregarded and dismissed from her interactions with everyone in the story, to the point of wanting to overthrow her "master" and the other Cookies of Darkness as top dog of evil. Matcha wants to outdo them, wants to be better than them, stronger than them, and make them mad or despairing as a result.

Matcha Cookie knows she's a "mistake" and is angry that her maker cannot "love" her or take responsibility for the life she's made, and resents feeling "tossed aside" and that resentment is driving Matcha to malice

she's the Starscream to Dark Enchantresses' Megatron, as well as the Monster to Dark Enchantresses' Dr. Frankenstein.

she's an enemy of the Cookies of Darkness within their ranks, but she is not an ally of the Cookie Kingdom either

something else to consider; when the Beast Cookies return to the world, Dark Enchantress intends to steal their power for herself and further her goals

Shadow Milk Cookie praised her a bit in his portion of story, calling DE wise for thinking the Beasts needed to be freed to "restore the world" (or some such), but this is the Beast of Deceit we're talking about.

though Shadow Milk Cookie was too full of themselves to consider White Lily would choose the secret third option of healing the sealing tree (vanquishing Shadow Milk AND saving her friends in one move) I would find it more interesting if, when Dark Enchantress tries to steal the Beasts powers, one of them (likely Shadow Milk) pulls a "No U" Uno Reverse and backstabs the backstabber. Like, Shadow Milk would be playing along and make it seem like he'd fallen for it but then pulls a; "LOL I already knew you would try, BITCH. Did you F*KING FORGET WHO I AM? what part of BEAST OF DECIET confused you?!" and then something else causes the Beast Cookies to still be weaker than their full power which makes them balanced for gameplay

whether Dark Enchantress successfully steals the Beast's power or if the Beast Cookies pull a fast one and overpower Dark Enchantress so she fails remains to be seen.

we haven't even seen what Wind Archer Cookie has been up to since that one update when they left the Dessert Forest and Millennial Tree Cookie to investigate Beast Yeast.

It is so wild to me that people are getting legitimately mad at Gwen for lying Miles when she literally had no choice. She was homeless, and as far as she knew if she went back to her dimension she would get arrested and charged with murder. The only way to prevent that from happening was for her to listen to Miguel and do whatever he said. So yeah, she lied to Miles, but she had no choice.

In fact, it was pretty damn cool of her to visit Miles in the first place, because she didn't have to do that. She was putting herself at risk for that. Same with when she defends him in front of Miguel, catches him during the chase scene and then lets him go, yells at Miguel in defense of him, and gathers all the spider people to find him. Y'all want to talk about how badly she treats Miles when she literally risks everything for him multiple times during the movie.

Also, super random detail you may have missed, SHE'S SIXTEEN. Of course she's going to make stupid mistakes! Of course she's going to accidentally hurt people! She's a teenager who's scared and alone and the one person who was supposed to love her unconditionally and always be there for her turned on her. And you just expect her to just be perfect???

AND ANOTHER THING- It is the same people who are slandering the fuck out of Gwen that are defending Miguel even though he beat the shit out of Miles for wanting to save his dad and continuously shifted the blame for his actions and failures onto other people and let his trauma turn him into an emotionless asshole. Miguel is a grown ass adult. You guys are going to be pissed at a homeless teen doing what she has to do but not a grown ass adult refusing to healthily process his trauma and choosing to use it against others for no reason? That's fucked up.

You know what else is fucked up? Y'all wouldn't care if Hobie was in Gwen's position. You'd be falling over yourselves defending him. The thing about morally grey characters is that everyone fucking loves them until they're a women. Then suddenly they're a bitch and they're evil and they're backstabbing and it's so fucking annoying to me if you're a misogynist just say that.

I'm in the process of watching Helluva Boss as research for a future writing project. Something that pisses me off about the show, other than the underdeveloped female characters, hypocritical double standards and Stolas being a uwu woobie sad boy, is how it treats Stella.

When I first starting the show, I was intrigued by the Stolas cheating subplot. I thought it would lead to some character drama. But, nope. Turns out that Stella is just a one dimensional bitch, who is abusive to Stolas and is as dumb as a brick. Or in other words, she's the embodiment of that one old fanfic trope where a female character is transformed in an irredeemable bitch just to push the main mlm ship together. Like...what?

I would've been fine with Stella being an angry and abusive bitch under normal circumstances. Women can be abusers just like men in real life. Female villains like that can not only work, but be fantastic in their own right. The Owl House pulled that off with Odelia Blight, and I love her as a minor antagonist in that series.

However, in this case, Stella's only evil because it Stolas more of an angsty backstory and lets him off the hook for what he did, making it seem justified. Since Stella is cartoonishly evil, abusive and completely one dimensional, he has the excuse of, "Look! I know I backstabbed my wife, ripped my family apart and gave my daughter a fuckton of issues, but I can't help it! She's an abusive bitch that treats me like garbage. She had it coming!" So it's just lazy and shitty writing. Simple as that.

What pisses me off about this is that it takes away all of Stolas' consequences for his actions and the nuence out of a dark subject matter, making it a completely black and white issue. Cheating is no joke. It leads to emotional and psychological issues for the victim that can last for years to come. If Stella was an actual character instead of a plot device to justify Stolas' actions, she would be no different. As someone who has a close friend of mine still suffering years after her ex-fiancé cheated on her, how the show is handling this really pisses me off. Either handle these things with respect and nuance or don't add it in at all.

This is a damn shame, too. Stella and the whole cheating subplot had so much potential to be interesting. But it's all dashed in favour of lazy writing. No one deserves to be cheated on. Even women like her.

Honestly, if I written the show, I would've made her a pampered brat, who is always being pushed around and controlled by the men in her life. She genuinely loves her husband, despite it being an arranged marriage. When she figures out about this, she is super pissed and heartbroken by the act. Her brother takes advantage of her ire by convincing her to hire a hitman to kill her husband. She agrees. When that fails, he then tells her that she has to kill her daughter as well. That is when she starts to hesitate. Her brother goes behind her back to hire Striker again to carry out a hit on her daughter, but she has a change of heart and saves her life. She still hates Stolas for what he did and still is angry at him, but she just walks out of his life and goes out on her own. That way she's still a bitch, but she has hints of good in her, her motives are somewhat understandable and she has an arc of learning to stand up for herself. Idk, that's just me.

Why do people refuse to see that Stefan was the more dangerous and evil at core brother and not some Disney prince boyfriend?I'm not saying this.It's right there in the text in season 1 episode 6.Katherine pointed it out about baby human 17 year old Stefan circa 1864.Unlike Damon who could be seduced to darkness because mommy issues,daddy issues,Stefan had pre-meditation and calculation to his ability to go dark PRE-VAMPIRISM.To quote Katherine "something tells me you like to play it rougher".You know Katherine Pierce who could play people like a fiddle.Stefan played others too just like katherine.Damon role- played a bad boy.Stefan was the ultimate bad boy.When he was good it was because he was wanting to be good for a reason be it good or convenience but when he was bad,boy,he enjoyed being bad.Because he was an addict with no control over himself or his self-contradictions.

LOL he looks like a Disney prince that's why! Kidding, sort of... in all honesty I think it's because stans in this fandom will always focus on how their ship (or LBR their guy) isn't toxic and that's why he's the better choice. When you do that you back yourself into a corner and it's so hard to criticize or even talk about a character's flaws because then it becomes a discussion about toxicity and ships. I remember a discussion had started on here about how Stefan is very manipulative, he knows how to read people and situations extremely well and he always used it to his advantage.

He did it so much in S1 with Elena and how he would only feed her information about himself when the opportunity worked in his favor, like when she found out about Katherine he softened the blow from that with surprise your adopted something he knew for months. Then we talked about how he manipulated Caroline when it came to NH!Elena getting her to promise not to give up on her and getting her to stop calling her a backstabbing bitch even though she deserved it. This opened the floodgates to so many questions and everyone questioning if every interaction between them was manipulation on Stefan's point and it was exhausting. It was exhausting because THAT'S WHO HE IS! He knows how to "play the game" and he knows what players he needs to play the game. Katherine and Stefan both saw that Caroline was good at providing a distraction on command or using her charm to get information out of people, that's why I felt Katherine said she liked the poetry of Caroline.

It's not even like the show doesn't TELL you that Stefan is the more sadistic brother, like all of S3 was basically about that. Klaus was interested in Stefan because he was inspired by Ripper Stefan's sadism, he thought Damon was a joke when he offered to switch spots with him. Even Cade was more interested in Stefan and when he talked with Damon he was like nah send your brother down here that's the monster I really want. You had Katherine and Klaus both point out how Stefan was the more sadistic one (I love that line from her in 1x06) but fandom was APPALLED that NH!Caro would be so cruel to Stefan without her humanity because he wasn't like that (I swear this was an actual discussion that happened). I do think the show missed an opportunity in S8 with having Ripper Stefan be an actual big bad, it might have opened more people's eyes to how evil he truly could be. What made him interesting is despite all that sadism at his core he had extreme empathy and him being an addict meant he fought between the two extremes constantly.

hii!!! okay you asked me about two songs i was dying to talk about (fascination and this masquerade). sorry for taking some time to reply, i wanted to dedicate myself to this lol. for almost all of these i'll have to talk about other songs as well because of the way i structured the playlist following a character arc of sorts. it's long!!!

celebrity skin: yeah!! the lyrics are pretty straightforward, but i placed it in a spot so the grunge-y guitar riffs would come out as jarring (right after an abba song and with no comparable examples up to that point in the playlist). claire not only grew up in the 90s, but her high school friend group was comprised of two melancholic goth kids and a self important wannabe filmmaker (and goth-adjacent). she was the preppy token friend, visually. in reality her interests aligned a lot with theirs. i think her interests section on her myspace page show this a little. horror, gothic literature, goth culture and 90s/early 00s alt scene really influenced her since she was surrounded by it almost all the time. also seen throughout her film career. back to the placing on the playlist, it works as a divide after many up-beat, positive (?) songs. most of the songs prior to ir characterise claire, her wants and her way of interacting with people. and then there's a jaded, grunge/alt rock song about being a star in hollywood. since the playlist follows a narrative, i think this would fit right around the time she's almost expelled from hollywood u because of backstabbing, petty tatics and because the industry favours some over others. she knew this, of course, but going through it it's different.

she's a carnival: one of my favourite songs from siouxsie lol. i think it serves to further characterise her/people's perception of her. she's fun. she's an amusement show. a fête.

is she a person, though? does she exist only to fulfill your fantasies? it is true that she revels on public attention, but what does this attention transforms her into? it comes right after bubblegum bitch as well, which is also a song i interpret being about others' perception of her.

this is especially in regards to men, i think. claire is a serial dater (for a pletora of reasons) and i don't think she feels like men see her. florence's dream girl evil would fit here nicely too. men fantasise her, then see her as evil once this fantasy is broken (queentex, latex; madonna/whore)(a portrait of a poison)(you like me better in your head)(je suis la belle dame sans merci!).

and not so subtle, but venice carnivals are famous for their masks. theatre is symbolised by masks. these three talk about archetypes: film archetype, psych archetype, etc. she says she doesn't care. is it true?

drive my car: also forms a trio along with material girl and money, money, money. claire likes money lol and she likes scamming men. <- not outright scamming them, but if they're going to use her she might as well get something out of them. the opening is great. "asked a girl what she wanted to be // she said, baby can't you see // i wanna be famous, a star of the screen // but you can do something in between". she states her goal and men are not the first thing on her mind. they're simply a distraction.

fascination: i've loved the beaches since 2017 this is not important to the ask but damn i love them so much. anyway. this is from side b, after her moment of reflection in what is it about men (last song from side a). in that song, claire consciously acknowledges her behavioural patterns/fears/thoughts about relationships/herself. the next song is national anthem. she wants to be someone's national anthem. and later on you have fascination. this last bit of the playlist is about her relationship with hunt.

this is a song about her approaching this relationship (it's not a relationship yet) in the same way she has always done: lightheartedly and without much thought put into it. it's not serious. why would she be into her professor? lol. it's just a crush, don't be stupid. right after fascination comes stupid cupid. it's the first song in the playlist where she approaches romance in a non-cynical way and it's very silly and it was done on purpose. she feels silly and she's acting in a way she doesn't usually do. she doesn't run after men, this is stupid. and then the next songs approach the subject much more directly and without putting on a front.

also this comes straight out of a scene in red carpet diaries. i've waited years to post this screenshot.

this masquerade: this one works as a reference to hollywood u: the first time hunt and claire have a moment together is in a masquerade ball and they're both wearing masks. literally, figuratively, everything in between.

(i made my friend transcribe this to me so she'd read hollywood u lol). his line about her "seducing" him also call back to femme fatale/bubblegum bitch/she's a carnival. and what is he talking about? do you want her to believe he did not recognise her because of a mask? have you seen claire??!! lol. lmao even. loser. i like her lines about him knowing it was her subconsciously and nothing clouding his feelings and i think it fits here. yeah he wanted it to be her. also psych major moment but you must've noticed there's a theme going through all of these songs.

I would describe myself loyal, heartwarming, reserved/quiet (introverted asf), observant, and emotionally shy.
