Her findes mange misbrugere, hjemløse og prostituerede.

'Long Bright River' is circling around Kensington Ave in Philadelphia. It is a story of broken families and most of all it is a story about drug addiction and how it breaks families and destroys the lives of generations. Michaela Fitzpatrick is the I-narrator of this novel. She is a cop in the Philadelphia Police Department and her sister Kacey is a drug addict. Slowly, in chapters titled NOW and THEN, the history of Michaela's family is being told. Mickeys and Kaceys mother died pf an overdose, even their father was using, so they grew up with their grandmother Gee. Young prostitutes are being killed and maybe the police is involved in what happens. Mickaela lives as a single mother with her little son Thomas and tries to find both her sister and the killer. The story starts slowly and gathers a lot of pace in the last third with some unexpected twists. But is this a thriller? Or did Liz Moore use the genre thriller to tell a story about addiction, lies and how people are being formed by their families? #Philadelphia #Pennsylvania #Kensingtonave #addiction #lizmoore #longbrightriver #bookish #bookstagram #rainierbooks #thriller #PPD (at Stockholm, Sweden) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9fYXiEgcCg/?igshid=1up4b9adsz0fo

Let me begin by saying that I have no doubt that Long Bright River will end up in my Top Ten Favorite Books for 2020. It really is that good.
Having said that, you may notice that I’m day late and always a dollar short with this review. I KNEW I had read the book. I thought I had written my review but I couldn’t find either one any where. After reading the review from Two Sisters Lost in a Coulee

Liz Moore - Long Bright River
Two sisters who could hardly differ more. Mickey has always been the serious, more diligent one who went to school eagerly and was dreaming of a better life than the one they had at their not very loving grandmother’s. Kacey, eighteen months her junior, has always been the wilder, more adventurous girl who early pushed against the boundaries. Now, as grown-ups, they find themselves on opposing sides: Mickey has become a cop with the Philadelphia police, Kacey is highly addicted and working on the street. Mickey always has an eye on her younger sister even though they haven’t been talking for years. When several young and vulnerable women are killed, Mickey is highly alarmed since she hasn’t seen Kacey for several weeks.
Liz Moore‘s novel is a brilliant combination of a mystery novel with the search for a serial killer and a very sad story about a dysfunctional family where problems are handed from one generation to the next and where an escape is not really possible not matter how hard you try. Even though it looks as if there were clear sides, the good sister Mickey and the bad sister Kacey, you realise soon that life isn‘t that easy and that both women are more like different and changing shades of grey.
Mickey is a great protagonist in so far as she has a lot of interesting traits to offer. On the one hand, she is the hard working single mom who only wants the best for her son and constantly fears that she cannot live up to her own expectations. As a policewoman, too, she seems to do a great job, her family history helping her to understand the situation of the less favoured by life and those on the streets. That she suffers from constant misogyny in the forces does not really astonish. Yet, there are also other sides of the young women which only slowly unfold and show that there are a lot of lies she has been told by the people around her, but also lies that she told herself to shape the things in the way she wants to see them.
The mystery parts about the serial killer and the search for the sister are full of suspense and have some unexpected twists and turns to offer. What struck me most was the feeling that a lot of what Moore narrates is actually very sad, none of the characters has much to look forward to in their life and all seems but too authentic. A novel which provides entertainment but also much to ponder about after the last page thus something not to be missed.

Long Bright River is the buzzy book from Liz Moore. “Mickey is a police officer in Philadelphia. Her sister, Kacey, lives on the streets searching for her next high. She disappears at the same time as a string of murders begins in Mickey’s district. Mickey becomes obsessed with finding the killer and her sister - before it’s too late.” This book covers some dark, depressing subject matter - the lengths people will go to get a fix and how pervasive the opioid crisis seems to be. The story moves back and forth between the present and the sisters’ tough childhood. There have been several comments already about the lack of quotation marks for dialogue, but you get used to it. Moore hides her killer in plain sight with several red herrings. The story is fast-paced and sucks you in. Even with the heavy melancholy you still want to know who the killer is and where’s the sister. Nice early release pick from @bookofthemonth and good story from Moore. Book releases January 7. #longbrightriver #lizmoore #opioidcrisis #bookofthemonth #bookstagram #bookshelves #bookswithcharacter #bookhoarder #bookworm #sodacityreads #bookreview #hardcover #bookcollector #bookaddict #bookhaul #bookspines #goodreads #homelibrary #fiction #crimefiction #thriller (at Ballentine, South Carolina) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6a1SD3gkvS/?igshid=17elo1bjhqu77

The Unseen World
The Unseen World (2016) by Liz Moore is an adult book, in which we follow Ada, mostly in the 1980s when she’s 12-14 years old. She is raised by her eccentric scientist father, and they spend most of their time together in the computer science lab where her father, David, works. Then, his memory starts to go, and she begins to realize that who she thought was her father may be very different than who her father really is. The book is at heart a journey of discovery, with a girl trying to piece together who her father objectively was with who she knew growing up. The book occasionally jumps to 2009 to give us some pieces of the puzzle from Ada’s adult life, and once jumps back to the 1920s, but it mostly lives in the 1980s, with Ada coming of age and figuring out who she - and her family - really is. 4.5/5

Rather than get irritated by the crazy loud background noise, I’m gonna start on some dialogue research. My writing teacher, #lizmoore, suggested we sit in a crowded spot and just write down snippets of convo. This helps to grab natural modes of speech that different people use. Hope I look more writer than creep, but well...😳🤪
