Blog Tour: Top 5 Reasons to Read HATCHET GIRLS by Diana Rodriguez Wallach!
Tumblr media
Welcome to Book_Keeping and my stop on the TBR and Beyond Tours blog tour for Hatchet Girls by Diana Rodriguez Wallach, which released this past Tuesday, 10 October! I've got all the details on this deliciously creepy nod to the story of Lizzie Borden, along with my top 5 reasons to read, below!
About the Book
Tumblr media
title: Hatchet Girls author: Diana Rodriguez Wallach publisher: Delacorte Press release date: 10 October 2023
For fans of Kara Thomas and Courtney Summers comes a supernatural horror that reminds us family can be our saving grace–or our biggest curse. Set one-hundred years after the Borden murders, this propulsive thriller imagines what a similar trial might look like today. When the parents of the richest family in Fall River are found murdered by axe, the town is quick to blame newcomer Vik. It doesn’t help that he was caught standing over the bodies with blood on his hands and can’t remember anything about the night in question. But Vik’s sister, Tessa, knows that Vik would never be capable of such a gruesome crime. Haunted by the mistakes she made that led her family to Fall River in the first place, she sets out to prove her brother’s innocence. Her search for answers will lead her into a sprawling, supposedly cursed forest, as well as the childhood home of Lizzie Borden—the original axe murderess of Fall River. Content Warning: Violence, mentions of murder, blood, grief, abuse

Diana Rodriguez Wallach is a multi-published author of young adult novels. Her most recent, Small Town Monsters, is a YA Latinx horror novel that published in September 2021 through Random House’s Underlined imprint. Her next YA horror, Hatchet Girls, will publish in hardback in Fall 2023 through Random House’s Delacorte imprint. Additionally, Diana is the author of the Anastasia Phoenix Series (Entangled Publishing), a trilogy of young adult spy thrillers. The first book in the series, Proof of Lies, has been optioned for film and was chosen as a finalist for the 2018 International Thriller Awards for Best Young Adult Novel. Additionally, Bustle listed her as one of the “Top Nine Latinx Authors to Read for Women’s History Month 2017,” and Paste named Proof of Lies one of the “Top 10 Best Young Adult Books for March 2017.” Diana is also the author of three YA contemporary Latina novels: Amor and Summer Secrets, Amigas and School Scandals, and Adios to All The Drama (Kensington Books). Amor and Summer Secrets placed second at the 2009 International Latino Book Awards for Best Young Adult Novel. She also penned a YA short-story collection entitled Mirror, Mirror (Buzz Books, 2013).

Top 5 Reasons to Read
I have been a fan of Diana Rodriguez Wallach since I read the first of her Anastasia Phoenix trilogy, Proof of Lies, back when it was released in 2017. I was on a tour for it and then did the next two books as well. (If you like YA thrillers, you should absolutely check it out, it's so good!) So I was excited to hear about Hatchet Girls coming out and had high hopes for it -- which were more than met! Here are my top reasons to read this deliciously creepy novel!
I love a good YA horror, and Hatchet Girls more than fits the bill! It is creepy and gory and horrific without being *too* over the top, great for folks who might not like more extreme/adult horror.
I love how the story takes inspiration from and pays homage to the Lizzie Borden story, updating it for the modern day and including supernatural elements.
Diana honors the bloody history of the area in which the book takes place, the Bridgewater Triangle, by including actual facts about that history and incorporating it into the supernatural forces at work in the story.
The book asks the question, which I am still pondering, of whether a place's bloody history can infect and curse the land itself, and/or whether land can be infected and cursed and thus lead to continual acts of violence perpetrated there.
This might seem weird, but the author's note about her own experience while researching the novel just sealed the deal for how much I loved it! You'll see when you read it -- I actually got chills!
I love doing these top reasons to read posts, but once again find myself wanting to rate the book even though this isn't a traditional review, because you have to know this is a five star read for me! I hope every fan of YA (and adult!) horror will pick this one up. Make sure you read the historical facts section and author's note at the end to enrich the reading experience.
Thank you to Delacorte Press for the finished copy, and to TBR and Beyond Tours for having me on the tour today!
Make sure to check out the Bookstagram tour as well! You can find my post here, and the full schedule is here.

Blog Tour-- Do you enjoy books centered on political intrigue and court politics? I'm usually turned off by them because I find them too slow for my taste but I am happy to say Castles in Their Bones by @lauraksebastian was the exception Thank you to @tbrbeyondtours for letting me participate in the tour! Head on over to the blog to see my full spoiler free review and check out the synopsis of Castles in Their Bones below! SYNOPSIS Empress Margaraux has had plans for her daughters since the day they were born. Princesses Sophronia, Daphne, and Beatriz will be queens. And now, age sixteen, they each must leave their homeland and marry their princes.   Beautiful, smart, and demure, the triplets appear to be the perfect brides—because Margaraux knows there is one common truth: everyone underestimates a girl. Which is a grave mistake. Sophronia, Daphne, and Beatriz are no innocents. They have been trained since birth in the arts of deception, seduction, and violence with a singular goal—to bring down monarchies— and their marriages are merely the first stage of their mother’s grand vision: to one day reign over the entire continent of Vesteria.   The princesses have spent their lives preparing, and now they are ready, each with her own secret skill, and each with a single wish, pulled from the stars. Only, the stars have their own plans—and their mother hasn’t told them all of hers.   Life abroad is a test. Will their loyalties stay true? Or will they learn that they can’t trust anyone—not even each other? #castlesintheirbones #laurasebastian #tbrandbeyond #tbrandbeyondtours #yafantasy https://www.instagram.com/p/CZqdQ9ELFOI/?utm_medium=tumblr

Any tips on how to get ARCs? What works well for you?
Hi! There are 5 ways I get ARCs.
- I get most of my ARCs through Netgalley! I suggest following their Instagram page because they give tips on how to update your profile. The more detailed your profile is, the better the chances are you’ll get approved for an ARC.
- Emailing the publishers. Although it doesn’t always work, it doesn’t hurt to email the publishers asking to be apart of their ARC team or asking for a specific book. Make sure you link the places where you leave your reviews. (goodreads, your blog, tumblr, Instagram, etc) If there is a specific ARC you want visit the publishers website. Usually at the bottom of the site they’ll have instructions, links or contact info for how to obtain ARCs.
- I also signed up to receive emails for blog tours on TBRandbeyond! You’ll have to fill out a form and they will email you with upcoming blog and Instagram book tours. If the book interests you, you’ll fill out a form. If they choose you, you will be sent a physical or e-copy ARC and you’ll participate in the tour. PLEASE make sure you participate! If you get an arc but do not leave your review on your assigned date, they’ll ban you from future tours.
- Sometimes authors reach out to me via Goodreads, Facebook and Instagram asking me to review their book for an HONEST review. It’s so important to be honest in reviews because it truly helps the author. There are groups on Facebook for indie authors and new authors who are looking for ARC readers. I am also apart of a few ARC teams for authors which means I automatically get their up coming books to read and review before release.
- Goodreads giveaways. So I have NEVER won a goodreads giveaways, even though I’ve entered at least 500 lol but I know tons of people who have entered and won. So it’s always worth a shot!
Also it’s seriously hard getting physical ARCs these days unless you’re already known by publishers or have been apart of an ARC team for awhile. A lot of publishers pre accept people for ARCs who they have worked with a lot in the past. It’s usually bloggers who have a very popular blog or high following. I’d say 70% of ARCs these days are e-copies.
I hoped that helped! If you want further info or need help with your Netgalley profile, feel free to DM me off anon or if your uncomfortable with that you can always email me. My email is linked on my page.

Blog Tour Spotlight and Interview | Lucky Girl by Jamie Pacton
Tumblr media
Hello, my friends! I have been waiting for this day for such a long time and not just because I have an interview with the amazing author of Lucky Girl for my stop on tour with TBRandBeyond Tours, it’s also my birthday! I’d like to thank you all for staying with me and supporting e through these short eight months I’ve been blogging. I know it hasn’t been long but every encouraging word, like and RT has meant the world to me and I hope you guys continue to support my work in the years to come because I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon! Below you will find a bit more about the book we’re talking about today, my interview with the author, and a bit more info about her! Hope you enjoy!
INTERVIEW
1. As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?
I’ve always loved writing and telling stories, but I wanted to be a marine biologist or a brain surgeon when I was a kid. I went to college thousands of miles from the ocean, however, and my dismal progress in college chemistry coupled with the amount of glassware I broke in my bio lab work-study job made me realize I’d probably be better suited to a career in the arts and literature. Which is how I ended up an English teacher and author today.
2. What do you think makes a good story?
So many things! But, I think above all else we have to care about the characters. I will read books in any genre as long as I’m invested in the characters and their choices. Of course, I also love a cracking fast plot and a richly built world, but for me story always begins and ends with the characters.
3.   Do you hear from your readers much? What kinds of things do they say?
I do and it’s delightful! My DMs are open on Twitter and Instagram, and I also get lots of emails from readers. Occasionally, I even get letters from a child who’s read Farfetched, my Middle Grade debut. Readers say all sorts of things—some people want to talk about how much they love my books; others want to know about movies for my books (no news on that yet, but soon I hope); and, some people have questions about what inspired the books or a certain character. I love hearing from people and I’ve made some very lovely friendships through readers reaching out.
4. Do you have any suggestions to help me become a better writer? If so, what are they?
Read a lot and write a lot, but also know that writing is a craft. It’s something—like building furniture that you can practice and get better with over time. Write stories that bring you joy or that make your heart sing, rather than chasing trends. Be kind to yourself—it’s okay to not write every day; it’s okay to have a book that you walk away from; and, it’s okay if you write a book that doesn’t sell. Keep going. Also, find people who can help you build a community. These will be the friends who cheer you on and help you through the ups and downs of writing. And, lastly, know that publishing is business that moves very slowly and is full of rejections. Be sure to cultivate other hobbies and interests outside of writing (which will likely make you a better writer and more interesting human as well).
5. How many books do you think you’ve read? Which is your favorite?
Oh gosh, in my lifetime? This number would be in the tens of thousands for sure. I was a voracious reader as a child, and that habit followed me into my teen and adult years. These days, my life is much busier with parenting, teaching, and writing, but I try to read between 250-300 books a year. I’m not sure I could pick a favorite unilaterally, But, a few ones I love include The Night Circus; The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue; The Ones We’re Meant to Find; The Witch’s Heart; Six of Crows; Salt to the Sea; and, The Nightingale.

𝔹𝕝𝕠𝕘 𝕋𝕠𝕦𝕣- What is your favorite fairytale? I struggle with a lot of them, because feminism. But I enjoy retellings from time to time and especially appreciate when an author writes a book that feels like a fairytale but is entirely new and unique. It's one of the many reasons I adored That Dark Infinity by @katepentecost and am so grateful that I got to be a tour host with @tbrbeyondtours From my review: "So much of this book felt like a classic Grimm fairytale, saturated with longing, magic and monsters. Lush and atmospheric it’s the perfect book for Fall. I found the character development and world building to be utter perfection." Head on over to the blog to see my full, spoiler-free review and check out the synopsis of That Dark Infinity below! SYNOPSIS By night, the Ankou is a legendary, permanently young mercenary—the most fearsome sword for hire in all of the Five Lands, and its most abiding mystery. But when the sun rises, a dark magic leaves him no more than bones. Cursed with this cycle of death and resurrection, the Ankou wants only to find the final rest that has been prophesied for him, no matter the cost. When the kingdom of Kaer-Ise is sacked, Flora, handmaiden to the royal family, is assaulted and left for dead. Wounded, heartbroken, and the sole survivor of the massacre, Flora wants desperately to be reunited with the princess she served and loved. She and the Ankou make a deal: He will help Flora find her princess, and train Flora in combat, in exchange for her aid in breaking his curse. But it isn't easy to kill an immortal, especially when their bond begins to deepen into something more . . . #blogtour #thatdarkinfinity #tbrandbeyond #tbrandbeyondtours #darkfantasy #yafantasy #blogtour #blogsofinstagram #bookstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CVM5pg6L7Jk/?utm_medium=tumblr
