Livius gets obsessed and is stalking a single mother and her daughter ends up unwittingly assisting him in getting to know every facet of her. The mother thinks her kid has an imaginary friend.
The borderline gigantic, teal demonlord contorts himself to sit on the little blue plastic chair your daughter offered him, smiling.
" You're late! " She puffs.
" I'm sorry, your Highness! " Livius drops his head, sniffling. " Your humble servant had trouble on the way over. Can you find it in your golden heart to forgive me? "
She pretends to pour a teacup, humming. "I guess... Just don't do it again. "
" You have my word, princess. " He takes the teacup within his massive hands, drinking air from it like an expert actor. " Oh my, you've really outdone yourself this time. "
" I know! " Your little girl beams, brushing her dress before sitting at the opposite chair.
" So tell me, what have you and mommy been up to last week? " The King taps his claws against the plastic teacup.
She takes a moment to think, mumbling a few answers that are anything but relevant to the demonlord, to which he merely "hm"s and "ha"s in response. Routines he already knows from front to back and back to front.
" She keeps saying you're not real. " He drops his head to his palms, elbows on the table. " That's bad manners! "
" Right right, excuse me. " He sits perfectly straight, purposely bonking his head on the ceiling lamps and making the girl giggle. " Well, I'm perfectly real, last time I checked. "
" I know! She just doesn't get it. " The kid pours Livius another cup, and he pretends to chew on biscuits. " That's why you need to stick around. "
" Oh, I don't knoooow- " The demonlord drags. " You know I'm shy. "
" My mom is nice, I promise. " Her socked foot stomps on the ground in frustration.
Livius hums again, looking away, as if deliberating.
" Libby! As the princess of this land, I demand you stay and meet my mom! " She shouts. " You can't say no to a princess. " Is added at the end.
The demonlord feigns resignation, slumping. " If you say so... "
" I do. "
" Very well then, I guess I have no choice but to stay. " He smiles wide.
Your daughter, innocent and happy to have a friend around, could never see the evil painted so clearly on her demonic guest's face.

Since the last SCN update was 3 months ago and there seems to be a lot of misconceptions around it in the fandom, here's a brief reminder for those who struggle to follow the plot 🫶
🟢 Amen has a traumatic past and a sh*tty job, that does not make him a bad person.
🔴 Amen isn't abusive to Eva, on the contrary he's the only one who ever tried to give her a chance at a better future.
🟢 If romanced properly Amen deeply loves Eva to the point he basically already proposed. All comments about how he only want s*x are invalid as the truth is he stopped/refused s*x multiple times when Eva offered
🔴 Shesmu are canonically power-hungry and often violent criminals so corrupted by dark magic that their souls turned cold. Eva is the exception to this and not the rule. Playing as a shesmu doesn't mean they're the "good guys".
🟢 Hunters are law enforcement, if the law doesn't differentiate between "sort of decent" and "worst ever" shesmu that's not on Amen or the hunters as they have no hand in law-making
🔴 Dia and Eva were never close friends, Eva's bestie was Isman before and later Livius.
🟢 Dia was lawfully executed due to her own crimes and Remmao's setup. Had she been innocent the hunters would've had no reason to touch her.
🔴 Amen never caused Eva nightmares or PTSD, her dreams started before they met
And that's the whole tea yall 🍵✨

Ancient Roman Poets on a Modern Date
Catullus (Gaius Valerius Catullus)
If you meet him before Lesbia, he will be charming, eloquent, and happy to go wherever you like, although his funds could be limited. Even so, he'll make sure you both enjoy yourselves. Theater or concert tickets in the plebian--nosebleed--section, for instance. If you meet him after Lesbia, there is a possibility he will spend the entire time trauma-dumping about his ex. If you also have one to complain about, this could be cathartic.
Vergil (Publius Vergilius Maro)
He takes you out to his beehive dressed in full bee-keeping gear to introduce you to his bees and then goes inside, where you sample different varieties of honey drizzled over fruit. He is sweet, but does talk about fields and bees a lot.
Ovid (Gaius Valerius Catullus)
Let's be honest. This might be more of a Tinder or Grindr hookup than a date. However, it's possible you met at a theater, race track, parade, or seaside resort. If you are aro/ace, run away. If you aren't and you are interested in seeing if he truly is proficient as a teacher of love, stick around. Don't expect him to be faithful, however. And although his manners are perfect, remember that it's an art and a game to him, so guard your heart.
Horace (Quintus Horatius Flaccus)
He'll take you out for a night of expensive dining and pay for it solely because the friend of a friend that owns the place owes him. He is charming company and can get you into any exclusive club or private experience you want to go to, but will expect reciprocated favors. Also, he turns on the charm, but absolutely expects to be complimented in return.
Sulpicia
She plays hard to get initially, not wanting to be too obvious with her affection. The first date will be YOUR choice. Pick well and she'll follow that with a candlelit dinner and eternal devotion. She does have expensive taste, however, and she would absolutely report you to her scary uncle if you break her heart.
Martial (Marcus Valerius Martialis)
He takes you on a picnic. Despite this being in the country, he'll opt for fine wine and gourmet food. He's easy to talk to, funny, and catty with his gossip. However, he'll also go on about his childhood in the country and how he went hunting and fishing and how he misses the simple country life. (All while sipping from an expensive goblet.)
Livy (Titus Livius)
He takes you to a museum and acts as your tour guide throughout the entire thing. Who knew that your date would double as a living and breathing audio tour? You're supposed to eat at the museum cafe, but you may not make it there before it closes... If you're a fan of history, you're in for a treat.
Iullus Antonius
Iullus is a huge romantic and just as charming as his famous father. He will show up with flowers and take you on a date in a small, undiscovered restaurant and to a lot of cute places that are off the beaten path. Whether you hit it off romantically or not, he's the kind of guy who could be your ride or die. (Spoiler alert, when he says he's your ride or die, he's extremely serious. 💀)
Albius Tibullus
When he falls, he falls hard. He takes you on a date in an orchard. This includes picking grapes and then tasting wines. If the date is before he was entranced with one of the lovers he wrote about, all is well. If not, he might get a little teary eyed about his past love(s). He is polite, sweet, attentive, and apologetic though.
Juvenal (Decimus Junius Juvenalis)
He takes you to an expensive restaurant and makes it clear he is only paying for HIS meal. The entire time he criticizes everyone else in the restaurant for being posers and judges them based upon appearance, status, and gender. His date is not a safe place for anyone who doesn't fit his definition of traditional values. Definitely talks about kids these days and the degradation of society.
#inspired orginally by @just-late-roman-republic-things#ancient rome#ancient roman memes#classics memes#ancient roman poets#okay yes I added Iullus because I feel bad for him and Julia and I wish some of his poetry had survived#and yes some scholars believe sulpicia isn't actually a real historical figure or did not write the poems but I wanted representation#and personally Iullus or Virgil for first choices#tho I love catullus and would also pick him#national poetry month

Lucanis is remarkable to my main Rook in many senses, one of those being that he's the first and only person to whom Aloisius is loyal to, let alone affection towards.
Even with that said, he'd never been in a truly romantic relationship before. Lucanis is the person he'd always yearned for, even if he didn't know it before - at least, if he did, he never acknowledged it.
There are more mature, adult themes under the cut - I had a hard time getting this to show up in the Lucanis tag when I tried to post it twice before, so here is my third, and hopefully final, try.
He'd been in psychos*xual trysts and in arrangements with other people in which mutual carnal gratification was involved, but those were always for the reason of him gaining something from that person. [I.e., what he had going with several elites while working at a high-end brothel]
The elven Shadow Dragon veteran was accustomed to utilizing his s*xuality to seduce others in the perfectly Machiavellian sense. There's a lot to unravel here, narratively about his status as an elf in Tevinter society. There is a lot of resentment he holds hidden from plain view.
Take that into account along with the chip ingrained on his shoulder, and there is more to unlearn about his belief that the world is inherently indebted to him. Aloisius has internalized a lot of anger over the years; in that such way, he and Lucanis mirror one another.
Aloisius would jump from partner to partner in the most cavalier sense, feelings be damned. I truly believe that all of his previous, toxic behaviors will melt away through his relationship with Lucanis and that he'll end up fixing my Rook, albeit unintentionally.
The first time that he'd have sex with Lucanis would actually be the first time that he'd have made love with someone. And by the Maker, it was the best s*x he'd ever had in his life. Love was the missing ingredient, and he was incredibly thirsty for it. One could swear he was drinking Lucanis' soul through a straw with how intensely and ravenously he'd kiss him.
He was used to h@te-s*x before, especially with Venatori. Aloisius scarcely concealed his disdain for the Tevinter, human supremacists who'd been a thorn in his side for over a decade of his life. It was amusing to him that they couldn't stay away from him, especially the previous Inquisition prisoner, Livius Erimond.
For Lucanis, and for Lucanis alone, he'd be a soft lover. For Lucanis, s*x will be associated with love and with affection instead of as a bargaining chip or as a means to and end - never expressly for pleasure apart from the sadism he felt when cruelly dominating Venatori and hunting them like prey, and vice versa.
I think that Aloisius is going to have to deal with the fact that his s*xuality never really belonged to him before, because while he thought that he was the one in control before, he had been actively going out of his way to engage s*xually with his marked enemies. It was a game of domination.
I can see the s*x between them being very, very emotional - and while Aloisius likes to carry a facade of cold arrogance and apathy towards the world in general, I can see him crying after sleeping with Lucanis for the first time because all of those emotions are being released through a healthy manner.
For all the pretenses that he held about being unemotional, he was accepting that he had feelings - and for the first time in his life, healthy feelings for another person. He was in love. Odd, he didn't care if he was seen crying, he trusted Lucanis and wanted nothing more than to spend his life with him.

HEY EVERYONE!
I know I don't post a lot, but I just wanted to come on and share a video I saw on an instagram page for Romance Club the most GUT PUNCHING, HEARTBREAKING VIDEO of a fan ending that could happen with Amen and Eva.
The user is @f a c e l e s s on Telegram and I don't usually share videos but, oh man, this one is just BEAUTIFUL but be warned: I almost started crying!
Also the artist has an instagram page @faceless._.sr
Edit: EMOTIONAL DAMAGE and MORE HEADCANNONS BELOW
Oh man, I can only imagine how Agnia and Livius would react if they have strong friendships with her.
I can imagine Livius sobbing in Agnia's arms, both mourning the loss of their friend. When Livius spots Amen, he flies into a rage.
"All she ever did was love you! She was only guilty of loving you! You made her die! YOU KILLED HER!" He'd scream, falling to his knees. Tears drip from his eyes as he looks up at the sky.
"If only it'd been me, I could've..." he stops speaking. Agnia kneels beside him, wrapping her arms around his shoulders.
When she looks at Amen...she is livid. Anger is deep inside her, because she saw a common spirit within Eva as if she understood her plight. Livius excuses himself, and Agnia walks back home.
Two days later, in the privacy of her house, she mourns her dead friend. She'd cuddle Afiri/Omphis in her bed, or would stand by the window stroking Polyb's wings.
"I'll take care of them, kitten," she promises. "They're in safe hands."
A knock on the door stops her. Closing her eyes, she doesn't answer as the door opens, but she doesn't have to look to know who it is.
"Agnia," it's Amen's voice. She whimpers as tears run down her cheeks
"Agnia?" She can hear his footsteps. "I-"
Unable to hold back, Agnia sobs. She buries her face in Afiri/Omphis's fur or Polyb's wings. Amen stops midway, noticing her shaking visibly. She can't look at him, not after what he did.
"Oh Gods, why her?" She sobs. She turns to Amen. He can't look at her.
They stand there in silence, a long silence. Agnia sniffles and clears her throat.
"I...I will be leaving this place."
Amen is silent. Agnia holds Omphis/Afiri or Polyb perches himself on her arm.
"It feels hollow and empty. With Evthys, it was different. But now...I will not stay here. Not anymore."
"Where will you go?" Amen asks, cautiously gazing toward her.
"Anywhere. Mountains, rivers...I don't care. I just..." more tears flow down her cheeks. "I just want to know she is at peace."
Amen's jaw ticks as she sniffles.
"What Livius said was true. She may have kept her identity secret...but her love for you was real. We all saw it. I just didn't know her love...would kill her."
Amen closes his eyes as she wipes her tears. Slipping on her shoes, she gathers her things in two bags. walking out of the house she once shared with Eva.
Outside, she notices Livius is waiting. Surprised, Agnia inspects the horse and carriage he is readying. He notices her approaching, smiling at Eva's pet.
"Livius...you're leaving?"
"Yes," he nods. "I was thinking of traveling. There are many cities and kingdoms in need of a healer."
He notices the bags Agnia carries. "You...you must be leaving, too."
She frowns. "Thebes was a place for opportunity, a chance to make myself useful with jewelry and networking, but...Eva's gone, and I can't find a reason to stay."
Livius nods in understanding before thinking for a moment.
"Come with me."
Agnia blinks. "Excuse me?"
"Come with me. I plan on going west of the Nile, to valleys that no one has ever been. I heard there's beautiful cities, kingdoms of equality. Perhaps..."
Livius smiles. "There's a place where dark magicians are truly free."
"Then..." Agnia nods. "Let's find out."
She throws her things in the back of the carriage, joining Livius in the front seat. Polyb flies in the night whole Omphis/Afiri take the back, settling in for the long journey.
"Where to first?"
Livius smiles. "We spread Eva's ashes along the Nile. Somewhere she can rest in peace."
"You cremated her?"
Livius looks down at the golden urn in his hands. A tight smile broadens his lips, but Agnia can see the tears brimming.
"It's what she wanted."
Agnia squeezes his knee as the carriage starts its journey, away from Thebes for a new beginning.

Personality: A true charmer through and through! Fabian is a sly individual, always managing to get on everyone’s good side with his charm and wit. Most people can’t help but listen to everything he has to say! Fabian knows how to use his words to get what he needs from others. Always seen with a smug grin on, he always has a sardonic comment to make about almost any situation he’s in! He’s excellent at getting out of sticky situations using just his words and “charming personality” as he would put. Fabian is however unaware of the effect he has on others, causing him to be known as a “heartthrob” around campus for his accidentally romantic comments and actions. At his core, Fabian is a man who just wants to get by life while simultaneously living life to the fullest.
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
TW: Childe Abuse
Backstory: Fabian was born in a poverty stricken area of the Port o’Bliss to two loving parents. Tragically, they passed away when Fabian was around four years old and left him to fend for himself on the streets. Fabian learned to trust his gut and to do anything he could to survive such as pickpocketing to eating food straight out of the trash. It was on one of those pickpocketing runs when he was 13 that he was caught by the police who hit him relentlessly and sent him into the local orphanage. Fabian didn’t mind the orphanage that much, it had okay food, other children to talk to, and a roof over his head. It was in this orphanage that he learned he had a knack for storytelling, sharing stories with the other kids long into the night to help them all sleep. Unfortunately he didn’t stay there long til he was fostered by a wealthy couple. The couple was nothing but cruel to young Fabian, forcing him to sleep in the basement, beating him up, forcing him to eat rotten leftovers if he misbehaved, and so much more. Fabian knew he had to get out of this house so one night, he fled the house and wound up back at the orphanage. He begged and pleaded to be let back in. Thankfully, the begging and pleading worked and he was released from his foster parent’s care. Fabian stayed just a little bit more at the orphanage until he was adopted by a sweet older woman who he affectionately calls “Nana.” She was like an angel to him, teaching him life skills and magic. Later on, he was accepted into NRC and was sorted into Octanivelle

Trivia!
Fabian hates horses due to getting into a fight with one once! It didn’t end well for him....
He has a scar on his eyebrow! He typically covers it up with his hair
Fabian has dimples when he smiles!
He hates art class as he can never seem to draw the nose right
Fabian is oddly good at massages (He has no idea where he picked up this talent)
Fabian’s skill at the violin started when he was first taken in by his “Nana.” She had one laying around and asked if he could play. When he responded with a no, she took it upon herself to teach him
Fabian doesn’t remember much about his parents other than his mother made strudels, his father loved violin, and they both loved him dearly
The earrings he wears are extremely precious to him, the stud being from his “Nana” and the other being from his mother

WIP Wednesday? Nah... How about fic Wednesday instead? 💛
Finally posting the first chapter of an Oblivion fic, with my heroes of Kvatch Florian and Drissa!
-----------
Fic rating: M
Fic relationships: Martin Septim/Male Hero of Kvatch
Fic description:
At a pivotal time for the Empire, in the wake of the Emperor’s death, two so-called heroes emerge from the ashes of Kvatch - an incompetent thief and a disgraced arena fighter. One takes the chance at redemption. The other seeks their own ruin.
Chapter description:
Florian and Drissa were two people from completely different walks of life in the Imperial City. The one thing that they both have in common? Ending up in the Imperial City Prison.
Chapter excerpt(s):
"We've been onto you for a while, Florian Livius. Now we have all the proof we need to put you behind bars." His mark had a smirk across his face as he approached them, which turned into a grin as Florian’s hands were bound behind his back. There was no way... He had fallen for a trap placed by these buffoons? "H-Hey, I'm certain that we can work things out. The bounty on my head can’t be that high, can it?" The guard who was keeping hold of his left arm glared at him from under his helmet. "Not a chance. No bounties and no running to your guild to get you out of trouble for cheap. Not this time." ------- “I’m sorry, did you just say that I am under arrest... For murder?” She scowled, feeling her teeth grind as she shifted her jaw. “The only times in which I have killed people were when I was fighting in the arena, and they were lawful kills – we sign contracts about those sorts of things!” Silence fell over the Dunmer as her eyes flicked between the small contingency of guards, and a familiar blonde head of hair she could see sticking out from behind a tree nearby. Oh, she knew exactly what this was about. She had killed the previous Grand Champion and took his place in the arena after they had unearthed some unsettling facts about his parentage. He had lost the will to live. He had asked for her to end him. “Did one of the Grey Prince’s fans put you up to this? He was the one who chose to step foot in the arena, his death was- it was a mercy to him, he was suffering-“ One of the guards cut her off by grabbing hold of her other wrist as she spoke – an especially easy task given that she was speaking far too expressively with her hand – before a manacle was clasped around it. “A murder was committed at the Waterfront, and our eyewitness places you at the scene of the crime.”

How would the icons react if their head imps were dragging their (imps) lover’s clearly asleep body from the surface very much like a:
Icon:Whatcha got there? Imp:*Taking their s/o from the surface* A smoothie
[A sexy smoothie. *intense sweating*]
Rinx doesn't bat much of an eye. It's easy for him to assume that he himself asked for that person. " Is this one of mine? "
Naturally, it's a bit weird for him when Nena actively steps back before he can reach for the sleeping human, but he understands it when she wordlessly shakes her head and seems to sweat like a whore in a church. The enviroment of Greed must be getting to her. Well, so long as she doesn't mix you with his captured people of interest, everything will be fine.
Zizz hardly notices it. To be fair, Jayde is very quick about it, Zizz may sleep through the entire ordeal and only ask if someone's going to pick up the passed out human when he wakes up and senses you.
The moment he knows you belong to Jayde, Zizz is imparting knowledge on how to keep you asleep for longer periods of time and how to make sure your body doesn't get sores. Not that Jayde plans to keep you in a "sleeping beauty" state, but he appreciates the knowledge anyway.
Vesper is far too nosy. He's excited for Lacai, wants to know everything, wants to touch, to offer some toys and fabrics.
Apart from some light ribbing, the human is treated as sweetly as Vesper does his own semi-regular harem and Lacai is encouraged to bring them around more open areas to socialize. It's a pretty smooth process between the two of them, probably extremely bizarre to you.
Vorticia probably won't immediately notice an extra person running around. But it's probable she might sweep you up and either try to eat you or demand a guard take you to the kitchen areas, because some sloppy dumbass clearly let you escape.
This is why Eleri practically slaps a "DO NOT EAT" sticker right on your forehead early on. Vorticia doesn't really care what Eleri's going to do with you, but she'd be mildly happy to know they've found someone to love. She'll test you before allowing Eleri to introduce the princes and princesses to you.
Kalymir just laughs. He thought, for a second, that Roch was able to kill something! But no, he's too lazy to even do that.
He takes delight in terrorizing you whenever Roch is careless enough to let you wander, but otherwise doesn't care for you or what happens to you. Roch takes this as the mercy it is and simply tells you not to ever disturb the King. If Kalymir asks you something, you side with him always or provide the most violent answer possible to a problem.
Livius is very interested in what Flints happens to bring over. Which results in the imp racing away with you like a dog that stole a scrap of food off the table.
He's very insistent on having you two sit down and "talk" to him, which is mostly Livius just asking invasive questions and getting carefully shot down by Flints while eyeing you for a better answer. It's stressful. You're treated like an esteemed guest, but Livius is constantly picking and plucking at you to understand how your relationship works, or just to amuse himself.
Cero acts like Rieba is showing him a cockroach. You're dressed down to nothing and humbled to the floor without the King uttering a single word. You're filthy, and he wants you out of his sight, out of his mansion!
Rieba just... Doesn't want you to have to endure the trials of the Royal Household of Pride, so you will only hopefully have to deal with Cero once in a blue moon. Don't worry, you're not trash, you're amazing, she thinks you're the best! Cero just makes everyone feel like chewing gum on the underside of a table.

could we maybe get a level 3 songtive of ruthlessness (epic the musical)? totally cool if not!
I really enjoyed my listen through of this musical when I first did it, and I love creating for it! I hope this is up your alley, enjoy!
> Name(s): Livius, Ruth, Ruthless, Killer, Mercy
> Pronoun(s): he/it/rage/wrath/wave/drown/kill/lyr/song
> Age: ageless, presents as an adult, sort of deity like
> Gender: musicgender, songgender, songchoric, hategender, ragegender, achegender, griefgender, intenragegender, ragecrashgender, subterroric, hadogender,
> Sexuality: bisexual, most attracted to other songtives and alters that understand rage
> Role: Anger holder, Coltenoir, aggressive protector
> Source: Epic the Muiscal Songtive
> Faceclaims:
> Sign-offs: ⚓, 🌊, 😡, 🗡️, 🔱, , 👁️
> Song theme: N/A [songtive]
> Front triggers(pos/neg/neu):
+ Epic the Musical, the ocean, Greek mythology,
/ Epic sourcemates, other songtives, having to take anger from alters, being slighted
- the injustice in the world, things that make the body violently angry, friends and family getting hurt, animals getting hurt
> Likes/dislikes:
+ Metal music, jamming out, stompy boots, leather, feeling free
- being pissed off, people arguing with him, negative coping with anger, poor anger management, others taking their anger out on him
> Personality: wrath is perpetually angry, for many different reasons, but that doesn’t make it cruel or harsh, there is still softness to it and its identity. Beneath all that anger is a deep sense of righteousness and compassion. It wants to help the body and the system by directing that anger to healthier channels than fighting people or crying.
> Ways they do their role: Livius helps by holding onto the things that make you angry, he finds a good coping mechanism, discovering better or creative ways to use that anger, usually in a constructive or creative way, this can be by creating art about it, going to protests, calling people to complain and right wrongs, etc. He knows that yelling about things doesn’t help, it knows that fighting with people doesn’t help either. It sets healthy boundaries, expresses songs feelings and makes sure that lyr and the body is comfortable.
> Inner world occupation or behavior: May like to hang out somewhere loud or bassy, might like bars or clubs. Will fight anyone who tries to hurt someone else. If he feels that another alter is in danger he will fight for them. Ruth wants to take care of everyone.
> Possible outerworld behavior: Will take the brunt force of fronting during scary or stressful times, if someone is scaring or stressing the body out he will be there to protect. Likes punk music and the punk movement, it’s the best representation of how it feels.

Letters from Watson: The Greek Interpreter
Crimes in Context
Elopement, Possibly ransom Do you all know how running off with Wickham and living with him was supposed to ruin Lydia Bennet and the rest of the family forever in Pride and Prejudice? (And how inducing Wickham to marry her only saved the family's reputation, instead of giving her the opportunity to not be stuck with Wickham forever?) It appears that Sophy is in much the same situation here. Except that the man she's taken up with is a murderer. Based on the context, I believe the scheme was nefarious from the start: seduce the foreign heiress away from her friends and the good regard of society, and either persuade her to sign her money over to her new paramour, or, if that was not within her power, ransom her back to her remaining family. In either case, there's a non-zero chance that Latimer and Kemp would have ended up murdering her: that was either the plan all along, or a likely outcome if they thought her survival might make them wanted men. Likewise, it's very possible that they always planned to murder Mr. Melas, and only returned him home after that first night thinking that they might need him again the next.
Carbon Monoxide Carbon Monoxide poisoning was not well studied until the 1970's, but it was well known by the mid 1800's that people could die of smoke inhalation, which is in most cases the same thing: Carbon Monoxide is formed during incomplete burning of any biofuel (for example: nasty wet brush in a closed room) or leaks out of the pipes in which a biofuel gas for lighting is transported throughout the house. It's flammable, and poisonous, destroying your hemoglobin's ability to transport oxygen, and it's still very much a danger in the present. It's why you should never leave your car running in a closed garage or use a gas heater in a closed off house. Interestingly, my research turned up documentation (or alleged documentation, this is Livius and Cicero we're talking about) of smoke inhalation as both a method of suicide and a method of execution in ancient Rome, so this is hardly a novel way of killing people on Latimer and Kemp's part.
