People who side with Triton and criticize Ariel for rebelling against him miss the whole point of the story. I don't know what it is about Ariel in particular that many people online look for every reason to hate on her and justify everything that happened to her.
#ariel#king triton#disney#the little mermaid#meta#disney meta#i miss people tend to be very dismissive of disney princesses and their trauma#but ariel in particular gets an unhealthy amount of flack#i know she is just an animated character. i'm well-aware she is fictional but boy does the deliberate misunderstanding still drive me crazy#and not in a good way at all#mean**#these critics are exhibiting the exact same mentality and attitude triton and sebastian had towards ariel#and they don't realize it at all#the entire point of the story was about letting go of prejudices. understanding the other side. letting your child go and make decisions fo#themselves. it wasn't just about a girl who gave her voice away because she saw a hot dude or sumn#that is a very gross interpretation of the movie and her character#she wanted to make her father see that there was beauty in the human world and eric was the proof of that#that's why she said “you don't even know him”. she said that because she saw how kind he was to everybody his compassion his love his warmth#his willingness to sacrifice his life for his damn dog. his humility his dreamy nature#he seemed like the pinnacle of humans but also someone she could relate to. a guy who understands her#it wasn't simply because he was hot although that definitely played a big role in her interest because that man was designed to be a total#beauty but anyways i digress. i think of him as the piece that united everything#he was the missing puzzle piece so to day#although ariel is actually the bridge between both worlds and eric is the foundation that maintains it#you know what i mean?#that's the whole point. it's a beautiful story about understanding love forgiveness and overcoming prejudice

Misaki got cursed to turn into a dog who can't talk like a human. The only way to break it is for someone to recognize him as a human and specifically realize his real identity. If the spell isn't broken after 24 hours, he turns into a real dog. He tries going to Homra cause his clan would know it's him, right? Anna wasn't there, unfortunately so no one else did. He knew Anna would know so he searches for her and instead crosses paths with Fushimi...
At least Fushimi doesn’t have to kiss him, I guess XD Imagine Yata gets transformed into a little red chihuahua by some Strain (The Little Mermaid Strain, who transforms you and takes your voice and the curse can only be broken by someone realizing who you are). Yata’s freaking out that he’s been turned into a dog, imagine him running around yapping and people keep yelling at him to go away. He decides okay, be cool, it’s fine, he’ll just go to Bar Homra and Anna can tell everyone who he is. He manages to get to the Bar without getting run over by a car and imagine him just prancing in, Kusanagi looks up as the bell above the door rings.
Yata’s already looking around for Anna when he suddenly gets picked up by the scruff of the neck and finds himself face to face with Mikoto. Yata’s tail immediately starts wagging so fast it’s just a blur, as he’s like ‘Mikoto-san will definitely know me, even like this!’. Yata’s heart is immediately broken as Mikoto asks whose mutt this is. Totsuka chides Mikoto lightly to put the dog down, King you don’t hold adult dogs that way. Kusanagi thinks the dog must have come in off the street and Totsuka says it’s too bad Anna isn’t here right now, she would have liked to see the dog. Kusanagi says to take the dog outside as Yata’s just heartbroken, internally crying because he’s gonna be a dog forever.
He’s dragging himself along the road outside of the bar trying to figure out what to do when he bumps into something. Yata looks up as he hears a tongue click and there’s Fushimi looking down at him all ugh, a stupid stray mutt. Yata growls at him all you stupid traitor get out of my way, Fushimi makes a shooing motion with his hand as he tells Yata to beat it. Yata huffs all I don’t take orders from a traitor but then it dawns on him that Saruhiko should recognize him right. He starts barking and like grabs onto Fushimi’s coat, pulling on it. The rest of the S4 alphabet squad are watching this like aw he likes you Fushimi-san, Fushimi pulls a knife as he’s like go away stupid dog. Yata’s determined though, imagine Fushimi even throws a knife and Yata catches it perfectly in his mouth.
The squad are kinda impressed, like maybe this dog is meant for Fushimi. Fushimi snaps at them to get back to work as he tries to take the knife back but Yata’s all smug like ha you can’t catch me, you don’t get this back until you recognize me. The S4 boys go back to their work as Fushimi goes after the dog on his own. Fushimi grumbles that he doesn’t have time for this and maybe he’s about to just let the stupid dog have the knife when suddenly the Strain he was hunting appears. Fushimi grins and ignores Yata as he goes after the Strain, Yata’s like wait Saruhiko this guy looks dangerous you shouldn’t do this alone. He’s looking around for Fushimi’s subordinates but no one’s nearby, Yata decides okay just this once. The Strain has like the ability to make duplicates of himself and so Fushimi’s being outnumbered, that’s when Yata uses his nose to sniff out the real Strain and bites them on the ankle. Fushimi hears the Strain yell and pins the Strain down with his knives, causing all the duplicates to disappear.
Fushimi gives this heavy sigh and sits down, tired out and annoyed. Yata walks over and drops the knife at his feet, Fushimi glares at him like I’m not going to thank you. Yata looks at him, unaware that his tail is wagging hopefully. Fushimi sighs and puts a hand down for Yata to sniff but instead imagine Yata raises a paw and kinda bumps it against Fushimi’s knuckles instead. Fushimi looks at him curiously and then murmurs ‘Misaki…?’. There’s a flash of light and now Yata’s just sitting there in front of Fushimi, both of them looking kinda bewildered. Yata realizes he’s back to normal and cheers, behind him he hears this ‘heh’ and Fushimi grins as he’s like you really are a stupid chihuahua huh Misaki. Yata’s like what did you say and Fushimi says he doesn’t know what happened but if he’d known he was helping Yata he wouldn’t have done it. Yata’s like yeah well I wouldn’t have asked for your help either. He pauses, about to go and suddenly all awkward, and then Yata mumbles ‘but still…thanks, Saruhiko.’

Wild uncharted waters
Tumblr media
“I thought I was going mad,” Eric said, one arm behind his head, the other resting lightly above the crest of her hip. Ariel had her cheek pressed against his chest, had been listening to his heartbeat; it was a sound she found soothing, reminding her of the sea of her childhood, its reliable ebb and flow. But now he spoke into the night and there was only the moonlight to see by, a faint blue spill across the narrow captain’s bed, the embroidered linens tangled like kelp around their ankles.
“What do you mean?” Ariel asked. They spent the better part of their days asking each other questions, her world as foreign to him as hers was to him, the oddest similarities making them laugh. This was different though. She’d never heard him speak in this tone before, his voice shaded with a darkness that went beyond tears unshed, beyond a starless night with a new moon. She had ventured far afield from where her father had wanted her to go, but there had still been places she dared not swim, chasms light could not find the depth of, the creatures within only perceived through the unequal touch of the water against her skin, a desperate sense of wrongness along her scales and woven through her locs.
“Before you came ashore, before you could speak again, I heard you. I heard you all night, singing without words,” he said.
“Oh,” she said.
“I stopped asking if anyone else heard it after the second day,” he said. “The servants were starting to look at me strangely, my mother said I needed to rest, I’d hit my head and the palace physician agreed with her. I knew they didn’t want me to say anything more. I was scaring them.”
“And were you scared?” she said. This she couldn’t blame on her aunt. She’d sung her siren’s melody and it had roused him after he’d nearly drowned as she’d meant it to, but she hadn’t realized how it would hold him. Bind him. If she had listened to her father and never returned to land, Eric would have been tormented by her voice for the rest of his life, an elusive cadence only he would hear, that he could not help longing for.
“I thought I was losing my mind, Ariel,” he said. “Yes. I was scared. I knew you must be out there, I wanted you, and everything, everyone around me told me I was wrong. That I shouldn’t trust myself. I was scared for the island, the people who’d have a mad king. But I was more scared for myself. For losing hold of myself.”
“I didn’t mean for that to happen,” Ariel said. “I didn’t know it was possible. They don’t tell us anything really about the people on land. Most of it’s wrong that they do say. But I’m sorry—”
“You don’t have to be sorry,” he said. “I didn’t tell you to make you feel bad.”
“But I do,” she said. “I was hurt when you didn’t recognize me that first day, but I knew who I was. Who you were. And you still wanted to be with me, even without understanding. You learned my name. That’s not what you felt, what you went through. You thought I’d abandoned you—”
“No, not abandoned. I thought I’d lost you. I thought you needed me and I was failing you. I couldn’t find you,” he said.
“I’m here now,” Ariel said, reaching up a hand to touch his cheek. It was a little rough, unshaven since they’d set sail, but it wasn’t wet with tears. He turned his head slightly, into her palm. “We’re together and it’s all real.”
“It’s hard to believe sometimes. Night-times,” Eric said and Ariel realized he was making a confession. “I go to sleep with you in my arms and I wake up and I think, it’s a dream. I hear you singing—”
“Its new,” Ariel replied. “All of it. You’ll see, you’ll get used to me. You’ll be able to tell when your dreams end and it’s just the two of us in this little bed. Did you have them make it so narrow on purpose?”
“No, that’s just the way the bed is on a ship,” Eric said. There was a smile in his voice again and the hand at her hip had moved up to her waist, below the hem of the shift she slept in. The tension in him had receded, the way the tide did, but neither of them understood that very much, the way the sea and the shore met and parted. “If you don’t like it, I’ll have some hammocks put in—”
“I didn’t say I didn’t like it,” Ariel interrupted. “I just wondered. If it was like a dingle-hopper.”
“A dingle-hopper? What’s that?”
“Something I was wrong about,” she said. “Also, a fork.”
“You were wrong about a fork?” Eric chuckled. “How can you be wrong about a fork?”
“I think that can wait until the morning,” she said, turning her head to kiss his bare chest and taste the salt on his skin. He had his own savor, not like the sea.
“I’ll remind you,” he said. Before she could decide whether he was giving her a warning or making a promise, he’d moved and had his lips at her throat, the spot that had once glowed as if she’d swallowed the moon.
“You do that,” she said and then he did. He did and he did and he did.

Officially adding ‘Part of Your World’ to the list of ‘songs that unintentionally resonate with the disabled’
Specifically from the beginning of the fourth verse
‘I've got gadgets and gizmos a-plenty
I've got whozits and whatzits galore
You want thingamabobs?
I've got twenty!
But who cares?
No big deal
I want more
I wanna be where the people are
I wanna see, wanna see 'em dancin'
Walking around on those, what do you call 'em?
Oh, feet
Flippin' your fins, you don't get too far
Legs are required for jumping, dancing
Strolling along down a, what's that word again?
Street
Up where they walk, up where they run
Up where they stay all day in the sun
Wanderin' free, wish I could be
Part of that world
What would I give if I could live out of these waters?
What would I pay to spend a day warm on the sand?
Bet'cha on land they understand
Bet they don't reprimand their daughters
Bright young women, sick of swimmin'
Ready to stand
And ready to know what the people know
Ask 'em my questions and get some answers
What's a fire and why does it, what's the word?
Burn?
When's it my turn?
Wouldn't I love, love to explore that shore up above?
Out of the sea
Wish I could be
Part of that world’

Beginning to realize that so much of being a black woman comes with constant setbacks, people trying to serve you mediocrity on every corner, and constantly fighting to use your voice to speak out on things that affect you firsthand.

Where Oceans Rise book Review!!
According to the stories told by Malaya’s family, the girls are cursed to fall in love with someone evil, which leads to their eventual downfall. Malaya is unbelieving until she finds herself in a regrettable and dangerous position with a toxic boyfriend. Malaya’s boyfriend is gaslighting her and she is clueless as to how to fix it. One day when she’s surfing, she gets caught in a riptide, forcing her to trade her voice for a new start with a guy who seems way better than her ex. Little does she know though that the sea witch had stuck her into an alternate timeline, and that the sea witch is using Malaya’s voice to release monsters into both universes. To get back to her original timeline, Malaya must fight the monsters, but if she returns she may never see her new guy again. What would you do if you were so tremendously unhappy and still making all the wrong decisions? What would you do for another chance?

This debut is an exciting story with a lot of fluctuating emotions, each portrayed beautifully. It was interesting to see and learn about Filipino culture. The story is well thought out, engaging, and unique, and the characters were beautifully created and represented. The action kept me on the edge of my seat on more than one occasion, and the ending left me sitting in all the feelings and with even more questions. The journey that Malaya goes through feels like one of those roller coasters that causes your stomach to be in your throat when you’re suspended in midair and you can’t think of anything but needing to breathe while also not being able to gasp in a single breath. Alvarez elegantly captures the struggles of real life within this novel, and it is easy to find relatable moments that bring you closer to Malaya. When Oceans Rise is a practical and authentic look into heartbreak, family life, and sacrifice. The book covers themes such as toxic relationships, friendships, how one decision could have led to a completely different life, and varying family dynamics.
I heavily recommend checking the trigger warnings on Robin's website for a more detailed outline because this book deals with themes of gaslighting, and physical, mental, and emotionally abusive relationships, so proceed with caution.
✯✯✯✯✯ 5/5 Would reccomend to anyone, so long as they read the trigger warnings first!
