This has been spoken about, dissected, debated, analyzed and broken down by so many people across so many platforms, and I'm gonna comment on yet again.

We have all heard and read the minimizing argument that Ariel did what she did "Just for a boy", which she did not, obviously. The movie makes it a point that she already wanted to be part of the human world, Eric was the extra push, the cherry on top needed for her to make that leap, or splash in this case, of faith. However, it has to be pointed out, and it has been pointed out by some that there is an unhealthy amount of slut-shaming behind that bad-faith argument. I'm starting to think that it isn't so much that she did it for someone, but that she was an active agent in her own sexuality. Ariel is a type of female character who shows desire for the male character, clearly engaging in what is now coloquially known as the "female gaze". Eric is the object of desire in that movie, not that he was just that as he was nuanced and developed enough to not just be a bland love interest, but he was still very much an object of desire in Ariel's eyes. You have people even joking about how Ariel was behaving in a "stalker-ish" manner, which is a trope commonly seen with male characters in a lot of 80s movies. Ariel wasn't just coy and shy; she was being blatantly flirtatious and downright thirsty, setting her apart from many others of the era, who usually played the coy and shy role, the receiving role. This is seen as unacceptable by societal standards, as sex is something only men want and women do not want, at least nowhere near as much. It's all about "roses" and "sweet soft wholesome cuddles" with women; sex is too dirty and gross, leave that to the men who are gross and dirty, anyway. People are quick to insult any woman who shows any slight interest in sex, which is tied to the fact that we view women as these "pure, wholesome" beings that are destroyed by the presence of sex and sexual attraction, and only men are filthy enough for that. Is it a surprise that people have been looking for covert ways to call Ariel a "whore" and a "slut"? Ursula herself did that in the movie, which is truly how a shit-ton of her haters view her anyways. She had the unmitigated audacity to have "icky thoughts" and wanna do "icky things" with Eric. We really gotta stop and think about the implications of a lot of the crap people say about her. That's always been the main issue people have had with her. The phrasing "She did it for a boy" is one of the greatest traps of fandom discussion because it get people fired up and not think critically enough about everything else, thus not making us acknowledge the wider implications of what they actually mean by that.
