The little one was almost entirely his father, save for the longer ears he got from Tav, and something, Haarlep said, in the cut of the child's jaw that was distinctly from Mephistopheles.

As it turned out, familiarizing herself with the delicate dance that was dealing with Mephistopheles' fickle temper and frequent fits was extremely useful for Tav as Mordred grew bigger. For the fits that plagued his grandfather also struck him, and even at five years of age he could fly into a rage at the drop of a hat.

And Raphael, naturally, made himself scarce in such moments, saying it was best to let him just rage it out, let him assault the debtors--what did they matter?

Tav did not let these fits go, and even when the little infernal boy would burst into flames and make as if to do what his father suggested, she stopped him.

"Mordred--Mordred, I'm here."

Screaming, raging, angry flapping of wings. lashing of his tail. He was in pain, her little one, and she held him gently but firmly, until the flames died down and he lay sniffling against her shoulder.

"It's alright. You're here. I'm here. You're safe." She shushed him gently, stroked his back, and let him bury his little face in her neck.

"I-I don't like it when I do that," he hiccupped, "Mama, what if I hurt you?"

"You can't hurt me, sweetling. It's alright." She rocked him slowly until the tears had ceased. "Your father might not be here often but I always will be."

"G-grandfather says daddy's not any good at being a daddy."

"Well, he's busy conquering...reaching for things that aren't his. That is one thing about a lot of devils, Mordred. They aren't happy with what they have, they always want more, and more."

"Am I like that?"

"No, of course not." She kissed his hair. "If you got power, you would defend what was yours...but you're such a good boy. If you were an Archduke don't think you'd be as greedy as some men are."

"Then why this happen to me? Why do I go wrong?"

"Sometimes that just happens, Mordred. Your grandfather has the same problem. You remember him, don't you? The Archduke of..." She waited, prompting him to finish the sentence.

"Cania!" he said, "The cold hell!"

Mordred glommed onto the new subject, eager as always to distract himself from his fits once they were over.

She spoke to him of Cania, then turned the subject back to Avernus, and how his father was handling power.

Or not handling it, rather. The unfortunate part of marriage to Raphael meant that when he wasn't managing the Blood War to his father's expectations, she was the one called on to do something about it. It was both grating and gratifying that his father thought she had that much influence...and that it actually worked.

She could have done without Mephistopheles' hints, however, that Mordred was a "true son of the hells".

Sometimes she thought he liked the boy better than he did his own son. But his attention was fickle, and she told herself she shouldn't rely on it.

Old news but the fact that Cody was manager at hot topic is so unexplored in fandom. Like he wasn't some shithead employee he was the boss Entry level retail workers are so rarely promoted to manager nowadays, like, was Cody just that good at selling/managing the store? Also, managers make good money. Okay, haha, it's a hot topic, but store managers make like 70,000$ a year (CAD). They have health insurance. So Cody was actually doing pretty well. It's kinda weird to pretend he was on the same level as his friend with just a standard sales associate position, even if that friend was also full-time. Like the power and responsibility that Cody actually had is kind of impressive especially for 28.

AND then! To become a carnie! Like sick move and also Cody lost all his money anyway but the financial disparity! Was Murph probably thinking of like an assistant manager position which would make more sense with Cody's vibe? Probably. Is it funnier to imagine that Cody had to make sales reports to corporate and design store planograms? Absolutely.

Cody was management.

I was actually not tagged this time, but I am in desperate need of distraction from life and think about this particular tag chain a lot. SO…Round 5! In no particular order/ranking:

1) Eligia (Gia x Elijah Mikaelson) - The Originals

It’s about the chemistry! It’s about her encouraging him to take care of himself for once and have his own life and desires! It’s about him helping her adjust to a new life and re-engage with her passions! Wasted potential all around!

2) Fayanalissa (Melissa Glaser x Faye Chamberlain x Diana Meade) - The Secret Circle

Girls! Having fun! Supporting each other! The show should have let them all lean into their gayness.

3) Vandermarin (Mona Vanderwhaal x Hanna Marin) - Pretty Little Liars

I couldn’t find a single gif with all three of them so I stuck with just Mona/Hanna, which is fantastic, but imho the best iteration of them involves Spencer too. Then you get the friends-to-lovers, rivals/enemies-to-lovers, and friends-to-enemies-to-friends-to-lovers dynamics!

4) Karolsen (James Olsen x Kara Danvers) - Supergirl

Wasted potential. A whole season of great buildup and for what?? Also a great ship with Lucy thrown in the mix.

5) Forwood (Tyler Lockwood x Caroline Forbes) - The Vampire Diaries

Have I mentioned: Wasted! Potential! And buildup/development! They became everything to me and I’ll never forgive the show or Julie for how dirty they did Tyler and Forwood in the name of a certain Mikaelson sibling.

6) Arisagi (Arisu Riyōhei x Usagi Yuzuah) - Alice in Borderland

If this show and this ship taught me anything, it’ s that the little, seemingly insignificant parts of life mean everything.

7) Gwiles (Miles Morales x Gwen Staci) - Spiderverse

They’re just so CUTE. I need to rewatch these movies post haste.

8) PeterMJ/Spideychelle (Michelle Jones “MJ” x Peter Parker) - MCU Spider-Man

again, they’re so CUTE!! Still devastated about No Way Home.

9) Herongraystairs (Jem Carstairs x Tessa Gray x Will Herondale) - The Infernal Devices

No gif bc no screen adaptation yet, which is crimes. But Ot3 of all time. They all love each other so much it doesn’t even matter how it’s framed in the explicit text, they simply transcend early 2010’s monogamist-heteronormative standards. If Cassandra Clare was braver they’d be even more canon.

10) Everlark (Katniss Everdeen x Peeta Mellark) - The Hunger Games

Everlark has everything, ok? Ship of all time.

Can’t include a gif from the movies for obvious reasons, but I’m a big POC Katniss Truther. I know Suzanne doesn’t talk very explicitly in the books about race for the most part, but the Seam folk are so POC-coded. Given geography, social division & treatment, features, etc. likely of Appalachian Native American heritage.

honestly speaking of, I do genuinely love the official + semi-official characterizations of the Lamb in official/promotional art and collaborations w/other games (monster road trip for ex) because they have no hesitation in showing “hey. The lamb? Yeah that little dude commits absolute heinous abuses of power and has no qualms about it while also being very weird and off-putting in nature. And You Will Love Them” and I’m just like damn ok. I guess I will love them! :-) ❤️
