Just finished the first Animorphs book!! Pretty good, holds up. Definitely feels more like an episode 1 than a complete story, but that's uh. What it is. Classic pulperback sci fi. The audiobook was way too good and my library has. Scattered copies in audio, so I've got to look into where I'm getting access to more without breaking the bank.

The Percy Jackson books were really written in conversation with Animorphs, eh? Percy's "The best thing for you is to make yourself believe this is fiction" vs Jake's "I pray that someone will believe me" opening narrations, Percy's being dragged away from the home he lives to go on adventures vs Jake's home being invaded by his enemy before the story even began. Fantasy vs sci fi, obviously. Wonder if anyone in the target demo had the opportunity to pick up on that. Do kids read the scholastic pulperbacks of yesteryear, or are they pushed hard into new releases? Well Riordan's books would have been coming right off the bumper of Applegate's, so maybe it's more likely than all that.

(I read both number 1s for the first time this summer, not back to back but recently.)

Durge lizard behaviors kick in when they got something in their mouth during battle and cause everyone in the vicinity to become extremely traumatized because they're either going to alligator death roll it, try to eat it whole, or slam it against the nearest solid surface until it's No More and then look at their companions with puppydog eyes

I've been in a campaign with this character for over a year, and I'm still trying to figure out their design

In creature the never realm arc is really funny, because the reason Akita follows Lloyd around is as simple as her not knowing what kind of weird beast he was and being very curious to find out

whence they both finally discover that the other is sentient, Akita does ask, and Lloyd spends a few minutes struggling to explain what dragons and oni are before giving up and saying he was a Lizard-Dog for lack of any better answer.

he’s able to make his mouth smaller (unlike actual lizards, and also this is probably why he can talk in the first place) but what’s important is this means he can kiss
