tumblr is so important bc as much as there are weirdos everywhere, the sense of community on this site is so unique and refreshing. i think a lot of it comes from the fact that influencers aren’t a thing here so nobody is projecting this perfect life of wealth, and most people are pretty comfortable discussing poverty or hard times or struggling to make rent.

i remember my freshman year of college, i couldn’t afford my books for my the second semester and couldn’t pirate them because they were fancy online interactive books for foreign language classes. i posted about it on here, stressed that i was gonna have to drop at least a couple of classes, and someone paypalled me $50. it let me stay in my german classes. and i was a nobody, i had maybe a few hundred followers at the time and someone that i did not know took the time out of their day and money out of their account to help me out.

every day i see people being honest about situations much more dire than i was in at the time - not being able to make ends meet, afford their meds, pick up groceries, etc. and i see people giving what they can. on a stable month i give what i can too. on platforms like tiktok, nobody will help you if it’s not a major life changing disaster that you can start a gofundme for. nobody’s going to venmo you $20 so you can afford dinner that night.

maybe nobody will see your plea here, but if they do i feel like people on here are more willing to help out. more willing to live in something as close to a community as we can while being online
