C-Drama Review: Love Game in Eastern Fantasy
Broadcast: Tencent, 2024, 32 Episodes, Genre: Romance, Wuxia
Tumblr media
My Rating 6/10
The heartwarming story struggles with its delivery, lacking clear direction. It relies on the audience's attachment to the characters and their growing relationship, only to ultimately leave these elements underdeveloped.
Acting: 6/10 World-building: 5/10 Production: 8/10 Storytelling: 4/10 Pacing: 6/10 Re-watch Value: 6/10
Summary with minor spoilers
Ling Miaomiao (played by Yu Esther) accidentally finds herself inside the latest novel of her favorite author, taking on the role of a supporting character and villain she had disliked as a reader. The novel turns into a computer game with quests, an experience system, and the constant threat of death—some more permanent than others. She has no choice but to complete the main questline to survive. Along the way, she teams up with the mysterious and moody Mu Sheng (Ding Yuxi), his sister Mu Yao (Zhu Xudan), and Mu Yao’s love interest Liu Fuyi (Yang Shize). Together, they battle monsters and unravel supernatural mysteries that are intricately tied to each character’s past.
My review - spoilers ahead!
The drama’s main storyline is revealed episode by episode, which makes it difficult for a cohesive narrative arc of suspense to develop. Instead, the audience’s interest lies in the evolving relationship between the two leads. Unfortunately, this relationship never fully blossoms into a love story—at least not on screen. The anticipated emotional revelations and romantic moments are more implied than explicitly shown, which I find to be a very odd creative choice. Even the dramatic revelations about Mu Shengs real identity, Liu Fuyi's guilt and Mu Yao's possession barely have any emotional impact. The rest of the plot simply isn’t strong enough to carry the series on its own, so as the finale approaches, the show regrettably becomes increasingly dull (but still rather sweet).
The chemistry between the main cast is decent and effectively supports both comedic and dramatic scenes. Despite its flaws, this is the first drama in a while that I’ve actually managed to finish!

happy true take tuesday 🎊 here is some stuff that is objectively true:
jin guangyao did the most good for the most people over the longest period of time in the jianghu. evidence:
his time embedded as a spy in wen ruohan's court allowed him to share crucial intelligence with lxc and nmj, and enabled him to maneuver himself into the perfect position to assassinate wrh--the war would not have been won without him;
see the sections of the text where the impact of the watchtower project is revealed to save the lives of common people who would not have been able to afford the protection of cultivators otherwise;
see wwx's own observations about the safety of the jianghu under jgy's tenure as chief cultivator, thus allowing the juniors the privilege of growing up in a peaceful and stable world;
see jin ling's observation that no one in the gentry would dare try to bribe a jin sect disciple while jgy was jin-zongzhu;
whether you think the relationship is romantic in canon is immaterial: lan xichen loved jin guangyao and is mourning his death, not the metaphorical death of his ~worldview~, while he is in seclusion. his feelings for jgy are not just about his sense of obligation, and there is absolutely no evidence in the text suggesting that he ever would have abandoned jgy--because he clearly does not do that even during the final guanyin temple confrontation. evidence:
lxc's worldview is actually pretty intact during and post-guanyin temple confrontation. @xiyao-feels provided one of the most thorough analyses I've read on this point over here, so I won't repeat or try to paraphrase what someone else has already illustrated so eloquently, you can go check it out for yourself;
see the literal years of their friendship that lxc spends calling jgy "a-yao," rather than "meng-gongzi" or "jin-gongzi," or "jin-zongzhu," or "lianfang-zun," or literally any other name/title combination that he could have reached for instead of the affectionate diminutive that indicates the level of emotional intimacy between them. if his feelings for jgy were rooted exclusively in a sense of debts owed, there are so many other forms of address for him to utilize instead;
lxc devotes literal years of his life to supporting jgy in both his efforts to reconcile with nmj (please miss me with the bad faith takes on this, I have already written about how four years is a long-ass time for nmj to spend un-murdered if jgy was always planning to off him for daddy) and in his efforts to distinguish himself as a competent member of the jin sect; the watchtower proposal was something they were working on together while jin guangshan was still jin sect leader, and jgy was risking a lot of his hard won political capital trying to push through an expensive plan that would not make money for jgs. give lxc some credit for god's sake, he's not an idiot, and he would not have supported this proposal if he thought it would do more harm than good;
in nearly every scene jgy and lxc share with each other, they actively gravitate towards each other or seek each other out, to the exclusion of other people around them because--and this may be a little complicated to unpack, so bear with me a moment--they just fucking like each other.
we know what lxc looks like when he has decided to turn his back on someone and isn't interested in what they have to say anymore: he does this to nhs post-guanyin temple when it becomes clear that nhs is going to provide him with neither clear answers nor closure. contrast this against his dogged determination to understand why jgy did the things he did, even when he is furious, even when he is devastated by what he hears. this is not the conduct of someone who has decided they are done with a relationship; this is someone determined to find a way through to the other side.

Hi, can I request headcanons sfw and nsfw of ling yao with a sweet but very very shy female reader? I love this guy and I want to see more headcanons of him (both sfw and nsfw).
It's ok if you don't want to do the nsfw part, I understand you don't want to do this type of request, I appreciate you reading this and have a good day/afternoon/night
thanks for the request, sorry for taking months to do this. hope you like it :)
Ling x shy! reader - hcs
Tumblr media
Ling is immediately drawn to your sweet and shy nature. He finds your reserved demeanor endearing and wants to make you feel comfortable and safe in his presence.
Ling often goes out of his way to engage you in lighthearted conversations and activities, using his charismatic and playful side to bring a smile to your face. He enjoys making you laugh and seeing you open up bit by bit.
Despite Ling's natural inclination for comical behavior, he becomes surprisingly gentle and understanding around you. He respects your shyness and never pushes you beyond your comfort zone, allowing you to open up at your own pace.
Ling pays careful attention to the smallest details about you. He remembers your preferences, such as your favorite flowers or books, and surprises you with thoughtful gestures or gifts that show he genuinely cares.
Ling becomes your biggest supporter and protector. He sees your shyness as something worth preserving and cherishing, and he encourages you to embrace your own unique qualities. He helps boost your confidence and assures you that your voice and opinions matter.
Ling's shrewdness and observant nature come into play when it comes to understanding your emotions. He can often sense your unease or discomfort even when you don't explicitly express it, and he takes steps to alleviate your anxiety and make you feel at ease.
Ling is fiercely loyal and devoted to those he cares about, including you. He becomes your confidant and pillar of support, always ready to lend a listening ear or offer advice whenever you need it.
Ling is patient and understanding with your shyness, never rushing or pressuring you to change. Instead, he encourages you to embrace your own unique qualities and reminds you that he is there for you every step of the way.
Ling's protective instincts are especially heightened when it comes to you. He would go to great lengths to ensure your safety and well-being, always placing your needs and security above his own.
your emperor,

Baby Meng✨️✨️
Seven months later~~~
A-Yao was helping Qin Su move about, as she was in her last month of pregnancy.
Since she was heavily pregnant, Huangdi would hold her to give her all the support she needs.
Much like her first pregnancy, A-Yao became a house husband~ sort of.
He runs his empire while being a house husband at the same time.
Qin Su: Huangdi, I definitely needed to be on the porch a bit. Thank you.
Yao: no prob.
I plan on building a mansion for baby Meng to inhabit in the future
Qin Su: will it have a garden?
Yao: of course.
Qin su: *smiling. Then her smile vanished*
Yao: A-Su?
Qin Su: I think my water broke.
Yao: your water broke? Come come come. Lay on the bed. *gently makes her comfy in bed*
Yao: Xiying, Fuying. Call the doctors and midwives! She's going in labour.
Qin Su: *groaning in pain* Huangdi!
Su she: *rushing in with the rest of team d* Huangdi, we heard screams.
Mo xuanyu: omg! She's in labour!
Yao: go call A-niang!
Su she: yes Huangdi. Right away!
Yao: *holds Qin Su's hand* don't worry, darling.
Bicao and others: *getting her ready for delivery~ then the rest of midwives arrived*
Meng Shi: A-Su!
Qin Su: *groans* yuemu hou! aagh! This pain is unbearable!
I...I feel the baby is coming!
Bicao: take deep breaths dear.
Xichen: A-Yao. Rusong, Jinling and Jingyi are out horse riding. But they'll be here soon.
Yao: oh great! I'll wait for them outside the room.
Qin su: *cries* Huangdi!!!! Ohhohoho Guangyao!!
Yao: *flustered* keep taking breaths, A-Su Everything will be fine.
I got to wait for Song'er and the rest.
Hang in there.
Qin Su: I want them here!!
Yao: mn, same. They'll be here shortly.
Meng shi: we'll give you your privacy, ok.
Be strong.
Qin Su: s....sure...yuemu hou...*groans in pain* guangyao!!!
~~~
Thereaftet Yao and the rest were all standing and waiting in the hall, then Rusong, Jinling and Jingyi arrived.
Rusong: A-Die, sorry for the delay. How's A-niang?
Yao: it's ok. Your A-niang is stable. But she's still in labour.
Jingyi: wow.
Jinling: are you serious, Xiao shushu?! I'll ask my assistant to inform A-Die.
Yao: A-ling. Give him this teleportation talisman.
Rusong: will she be alright?
And she's screaming your name.
Qin su: guangyao!!!!!!
Yao: yes Song'er.
Labour pain is a nightmare, but your A-niang is strong.
Rusong: mn.
A midwife (from inside): Huanghou get ready to push!
Meng Shi: Yao'er, she's going to push.
Yao: that's great. A-niang, I feel really anxious.
Meng Shi: as you should.
I'm also anxious for the arrival of baby Meng.
Wen Ruohan: *rushes in* how is A-Su?
Yao: yea. She's getting ready to push.
Meanwhile in the streets of Jingjing, fox spirits were crowded in every tea shop/restaurant they can find~ as the storytellers are the ones with the news.
Storyteller: I heard that Huanghou has gone into labour.
Let's all see if it's a boy or a girl.
In the Huyao empire, both genders are equal to each other. But we still want to know what she's having.
The Mengs are exceptionally beautiful. Baby Meng will be as great as Rusong Dianxia and Jingyi er Dianxia.
Long live the Mengs.
They're a prosperous dynasty.
..
A half an hour later, cries can be heard in Jing Manor's halls.
Qin Su also sighed in relief, and plopped back on her pillow~ stricken by weakness.
It's a girl!
It's a girl!
She's Meng Gongzhu!!!
Qin Su: *smiles* a girl? Oh my. *closes her eyes*
Yes Huanghou. Take your rest.
You did well Huanghou.
Yao: a girl!! *hugs Meng Shi* A-niang I have a daughter!!
Meng Shi: I'm so so so happy for you Yao'er!!
Wen Ruohan: congratulations, Yao'er
Yao: thank you!
Yao: is A-Su ok?
Midwife: yes Huangdi. Her and Gongzhu are ok.
Yao: lovely!
Yea, Huanghou is just really exhausted.
Rusong: that's great news!!! Now I have to protect her more than ever!
Jingyi: Rusong! *hug*
Jinling: *joins in the hug*
Jingyi: I want to cry!
Jinling: same!
Rusong: I'm also very emotional!
But I love how you two are hugging. Our sister brought everyone together.
Jingyi: what?
Jinling: I wasn't hugging him!
Jingyi: neither was I!
Su she: *kisses* congrats Huangdi.
Yao: thanks dear!
Xichen: *lifts up A-Yao and spins with him* A-Yao, A-Yao, A-Yao. I'm so happy for you!!!
Yao: *laughing* A-Huan. Thank you so much. *blushing*
Xichen: your dimples get so deep when you're happy. *puts him down* let me kiss them*
Yao: *kisses him in return*
Mo xuanyu: *kisses his hand* congrats Yao gege.
Yao: thanks A-Yu.
I hope she has access to your makeup.
Mo xuanyu: always.
Xue yang: *hugs A-Yao* Jiggylicious. *kisses* you and your supermodel family.
Afterwards~
Huangdi, come see your baby.
Yao: I'm coming, I'm coming.
Meng Shi and the rest: *follows*
Qin su: *happily holding her newborn* A-Hua. Welcome to the world.
Huangdi.
Look, Diedie, Nainai and your brothers are here.
Yao: baby Taihua. *admiring the little Gongzhu's cuteness* I'm your A-Die. I'll make sure you have everything in life.
Qin Su: awww
Yao: A-Su. *strokes hair* you did a good job. You're very strong.
Take a good rest, dear.
Qin Su: sure.
Hold her, Huangdi.
Yao: of course, of course. *holds her delicately*
Little Taihua is so tender, and precious.
Qin Su: who does she think she resembles?
Yao: she has a hint of both of us. But I see she resembles A-niang a lot.
Qin Su: aww.
You and your strong Meng genes.
Meng Shi: you're so right.
A-Hua resembles me a lot. Am I right, Huahua? *holds her* that's why you'll have all of Nainai's jewelry and dresses.
Yao: Song'er, Yi'er. Come meet your sister.
Rusong: mn.
Huahua.
I'm Rusong. Your big brother.
Your dage.
Jingyi: and I'm your er ge.
Zixuan: *entering with yanli* Foxy, I'm here.
Awwwwwww. Here's my baby Taihua.
Yanli: she's soo adorable.
A-Su, how are you?
Qin Su: really weak. But fine.
Yanli: I'll send some soup for you, to build back up your energy.
Qin Su: thank you, Yanyan.
Rusong: *holding his baby sis* uncle Zish. Hold her.
Zixuan: of course, Song'er.
I'm honoured to hold this little bundle of cuteness!
Wen ruohan: ah that's a Meng baby.
Meng babies are always adorable, with their little dimples.
Meng shi: that's right.
She'll win everyone's hearts.
Qin Su: she already did.
Yao: she'll be spoilt by me!
Meng shi: as always. With all your children.
...
Imperial Gongzhu, Meng Taihua was born on September 14th 💛.
Let's take a moment to appreciate all those wholesome relationships that this show presented us with. They will be with me for years to come💜✨ [LONG READ]
Tumblr media
1) One of the most underrated relationships of the show. The unconditional love that Qing had for her brother, was so wholesome! She would look at him & see the entire world tranform into one person. While for A-Ning, his sister WAS his world and beyond.
2) There are brothers, there are fathers & then there is Xichen to his Wangji. From reading his baby brother like a book to taking away his pains before they crossed his path - he was the family Wangji deserved.
As for LWJ, Xichen was embodiment of God.
Tumblr media
3) Again such underrated relationship. People only saw the way NMJ was harsh towards NHS but what they failed to see was how he loved his him beyond words. He protected him like a delicate flower.
And for NHS, NMJ was his home, refuge & utmost safety.
4) Shows seldom portray such a pure, unconditional relationship in a completely platonic relationship. Were they friends? Were they like siblings? Were they acquaintances? I don't know. But whatever they were, they were eachother's familiarity, home.
5) What Ning felt for Yuan was so beautiful. Ning was always taken care of by others but it was only with Yuan, did he feel this fierce protectiveness for. Not only were they the last ones surviving from their family, they had a connection so intangible.
6) These 2 have my heart. There were times when I used to think Wen Ning was an alternate representation of WWX. They shared their traumas, homes, loyalties. Both were terribly misunderstood by the society so they chose to turn to eachother for comfort.
Tumblr media
7) Not making excuses for XY or his toxic obsession for Xingchen. However XY is a WWX gone horribly wrong. He's never felt a shred of emotion in his life - & the first time he did? He didn't know what to do with it. And that was portrayed so beautifully!
8) It might've started on a wrong note, but the way their relationship progressed throughout the show was beautiful to watch. The understanding, the maturity and the utter devotion they showed for eachother was so pure. We all knew Yanli was in love the moment she laid eyes on him, but Jin Zixuan only had Yanli's name on his lips even on his last breath.
Tumblr media
9) The subtlety in their relationship could've easily missed but it was there and it was glaring for me. The way they jumped in to take the hit for eachother throughout the show was beautiful! They were so different in their own ways but together, they were eachother's best confidants.
10) Again, there might be differences in opinion here but their relationship was an absolute treat for me to watch. I loved their back and forth banter and the humour but beneath all of that there was also this hidden unconditional love of two people who had lost their everything and only had eachother to survive. They were eachother's support and weakness. And probably only reason to be alive.
Tumblr media
11) I loved the growth in their relationship over time. From despising WWX to understanding him as a person, starting become fond of him and then finally somehow acknowledging him as his uncle - the growth was beautiful to witness. And WWX's obvious fondness and protectiveness towards him was so warming. Everytime he looked at Jin Ling, it was like WWX got his Shijie back!
12) You can hate Meng Yao all you want to but one thing that you can't deny is the fact that he loved Lan Xichen beyond all his agenda, revenge and very reason of existence. If there was one person whom he had any unconditional feelings towards, it was him. And it broke him completely to see that distrust in LX's eyes. And for Lan Xichen, Meng Yao was that one person who could never do any wrong. What a sad parallel to WangXian indeed!
Tumblr media
13) I really really liked their interactions right off the bat. But what I didn't realise was how I would grow so attached to the beautiful relationship they'd eventually develop. I'm again amazed at how they have paid minute attention to even the smallest things in a completely platonic relationship! What wwx felt for Mianmian was responsibility and respect for being the strong woman that she was. But what Mianmian felt for wwx was unwavering gratitude, awe and immense respect. Her taking a stand for him when everyone kept quiet and him still remembering her even with how poor his memory was, says a lot about their mutual respect.
14) Another so so underrated relationship of the show! One of the things that hurt me was how wwx got distanced from such a beautiful friend over time due to the unfortunate circumstances that he was in. Wwx found a brother in NHS whom he could be himself with unabashedly. And in wwx, NHS found a guide, a partner in crime and a person through whom he manifested all his desires and wishes. It was one of the purest relationships and a classic example of "Friends are families that you get to choose for yourself".
Tumblr media
15) However short their time together onscreen was, they left an undeniable effect on me. The way they silently kept on giving for the other person without a moment of hesitation, was so beautiful to watch. Xingchen was not only ready to give away his eyes but even his life for him while Song Lan was ready to dedicate his entire life to Xingchen, his memories and the time they've spent together.
16) You don't need me to tell you Yanli & WWX loved e/o. What needs to be acknowledged is how he was her world. In her eyes the little kid on top of the tree could do nothing wrong. When every single person showed their doubt - Yanli was unmoved. And it's like all of wwx's worries would just fade into a mist when Yanli & her soup were around. I believe wwx was fond of the soup not only because of the taste, but he had associated it to his shijie's presence. Losing Yanli was an irreparable loss.
Tumblr media
17) I know there are diff in opinions here but JC & WWX are one of my favourite relationships in the show. Yes there were flaws & misunderstandings there but at the end of the day, the fact doesn't change that they were ready to die for eachother. With JC's every longing glance masked by misplaced accusation & every sad smile of understanding & helplessness from WWX, you could see every fight, harsh words & shoves came from a place of intense love. More than brothers they were each other's confidants first.
18) RANT ALERT: There was never, there is none & there will never exist a love so epic in magnitude.
While WWX's fast paced world came to a screeching halt when he met lwj, LWJ's monotonous life gained pace when he got hit by this sudden tornado.
For LZ, he understood the meaning of life when he met wwx. He understood there was much more to it than simply doing what is told. His love was so intense, he didn't even need the other's acknowledgement. He felt it, wwx was safe - that was enough.
For WY, lwj was that rein that didn't suffocate him rather guide him. He showed him how to love & let go. He made him understand actions spoke louder than words. It was lwj staying beside him through the end, that spoke louder than any words ever could.
Summary: When Wei Wuxian attends the first cultivation conference since Lan Xichen left seclusion, he doesn't expect a demand he stand trial. Apparently others planned for that contingency.
Notes: This started as a flash fiction exercise I was doing with my class. I know it’s super self-indulgent but that’s what I wanted to write. The title is an idiom. Literally, to dispel the clouds and see the sun, but figuratively to restore justice.
AO3 link
------------
“You think I should what?”
Wei Wuxian didn’t think he could be hearing that right. He’d come to this discussion conference to lend moral support to his husband, not to become a topic himself.
“Be put on trial, of course,” Sect Leader Yao said, his tone indicating that he felt it was obvious.
“For what?”
Zidian sparked as Jiang Cheng spat the question, surprising Wei Wuxian.
“All his sins, of course! The Bloodbath of Nightless City, for instance… He should face justice!”
He wanted to say this didn’t surprise him, that the inept and ridiculous politics of the cultivation world and their idiotic demands were rote to him, but this made him want to both laugh and cry.
“I died, Sect Leader Yao. Is that not punishment enough?”
“And yet you’re here now, permitted to sit amongst the gentry you terrorized as Yiling Laozu!”
Wei Wuxian could feel the tension in his husband beside him, knew Lan Zhan was absolutely livid and that this could come to blood, and it wouldn’t likely be his. The only option was to try to diffuse the situation using a logic that would likely fly far over the heads of most of these morons.
“Yes, I somehow terrorized them while confining myself to the Burial Mounds and protecting a bunch of innocent civilians who were unjustly executed. As I recall, one of your disciples shot me with an arrow while I was speaking my case, and another killed Jiang Yanli with a sloppy blow meant for me. And now, having killed me and those I was protecting once without any trial, you expect to do so again?”
Predictably, Sect Leader Yao turned red with rage, sputtering at the accusation. But Wei Wuxian kept speaking.
“And then, when you came to kill me again while I was revealing the actual culprit who led you by the nose for over a decade, I instead saved your life. But now you speak of justice, as though you have any understanding of it whatsoever.”
He was angry now, on behalf of those who hadn’t had to die, those who died in part because of his choices, but also because of the hubris of the cultivation world. He could feel tendrils of resentful energy responding to that rage, coiling around his fingers.
“Perhaps you would like to see the Yiling Laozu again? It can be arranged.”
He let the resentful energy teem, let it turn his eyes red, and was vaguely satisfied when Sect Leader Yao fell over himself in terror, babbling about being threatened. He hoped he’d pissed himself.
Wei Wuxian let the energy dissipate.
“But I would much prefer to be Hanguang-Jun’s husband,” he said, leaning into his side. “And be left alone.”
Several minor sect leaders began muttering about justice, but the crackle of Zidian on Jiang Cheng’s wrist left silence in its wake.
“Yunmeng Jiang will not support a trial, or any movement against Sect Heir Wei Wuxian,” he intoned, glaring around him as though daring anyone to challenge him.
Wei Wuxian nearly choked. He wasn’t even in the Jiang sect, so how could he be Sect Heir.
“Lanling Jin will also not support any trial or movement against my dajiu,” Jin Ling interjected, cutting off any potential exploration, his voice commanding and angry.
Now he did choke, but on a different emotion. He’d never expected Jin Ling to refer to him as dajiu, even in private, but here he was announcing it to the entire cultivation world, laying claim to him as family.
“Qinghe Nie will not support any trial or movement against Wei Wuxian, as well,” Nie Huaisan added, his fluttering fan hiding his expression, but his eyes shrewd.
“Gusu Lan will also not support any trial or movement against the husband of the Chief Cultivator,” Lan Xichen said.
It was the first discussion conference he had attended since he had ended his seclusion, and the pronouncement wasn’t unexpected at this point, but then he stood.
“In fact, I believe the cultivation world owes Wei Wuxian compensation for the ills he has suffered at its hands, including spreading vicious rumors about his character following his heroism during the Sunshot Campaign and his righteousness in protecting the innocents afterward.”
Wei Wuxian gaped—how had the conversation turned from likely executing him to compensating him?
“Wei Wuxian is due everything a sect heir should have. Sixteen years’ worth, actually. Yunmeng Jiang agrees with paying restitution.”
He wondered if this had somehow been planned, but who would have known Sect Leader Yao would be an idiot.
Oh, right. Everyone.
Wei Wuxian was reeling and was grateful for the grounding arm Lan Zhan snaked around his waist.
“Lanling Jin spread many of the vicious rumors in its quest for the Stygian Tiger Amulet, and for the execution of dajiu’s refugee family,” Jin Ling announced. “We will provide blood money as restitution for that wrong.”
Muttering filled the room, sect leaders reacting to two main sects paying the Yiling Laozu restitution.
“Qinghe Nie participated in the Siege of Burial Mounds,” Nie Huaisang said. “We were at Nightless City and went along with the injustices perpetrated against civilians, failing to investigate. Qinghe Nie will also pay restitution.”
The murmurs seemed like a roar, and Wei Wuxian felt lost.
“Gusu Lan owes Wei Wuxian a debt,” Lan Xichen added. “Only Hanguang-Jun spoke up against the slander. He was robbed of sixteen years with his husband and son. We will pay restitution as well.”
Lan Xichen stood, silencing sect leaders that were openly questioning who Wei Wuxian’s son could be.
“All sects owe Wei Wuxian a debt, particularly those who helped spread malicious rumors,” he said, looking at Sect Leader Yao. “Perhaps your suggestion of a trial is sound, Sect Leader Yao—but not for Wei Wuxian. For us, if you insist on a trial and on justice.”
Sect Leader Yao shook his head, for once silent.
“I don’t think that’s necessary,” Sect Leader Ouyang said quickly. “Baling Ouyang will not support a trial or any movement against Wei Wuxian.”
Other minor sect leaders, even those who had previously been in support of Sect Leader Yao’s suggestion, hastily agreed.
“So agreed, by majority.”
Lan Zhan stood, pulling Wei Wuxian up with him.
“Perhaps we should break for today and use the time to reflect.”
His voice was icy, his tone more clipped than usual, and he didn’t bother to wait for agreement from the sect leaders, simply swept from the banquet hall, pulling Wei Wuxian with him.
Wei Wuxian was glad for the reprieve, glad to be whisked away, glad to be able to reflect in a more private setting.
He had some people to confront once he was capable of speech again.
@suibian-chenqing ME TOOOO!!! It is my ultimate endgame in any version of cql/mdzs. Just Lotus Pier in some way, shape, or form being the home where everyone returns to.
So please consider a universe where everyone makes better choices, has healthier conflict resolution skills à la conversations over soup, and lives happily ever after. Hear me out:
We all know that the chaotic Jiang disciples are the unsung heroes of the story, always merrily dragging their grumpy grape sect leader from danger and picking up after his dramatically discarded capes across various parts of the country.
What if after that staged fight while Jiang Cheng angrily copes with brozilla wedding planning (they hear him crying yelling multiple times at all the notebooks full of wedding ideas Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng have jotted down over the years), they decide that this is just not conducive to the happiness of their two favorite Young Masters?
Or equally important, the continuation of their beloved tradition of monthly Lotus Pier lake parties. A Jiang pool party without their resident chaos king and undisputed champion for the highest caliber splash swan dives? This Will Not Stand!
Obviously it is their Duty and their Right as the protectors and purveyors of Jiang culture for a few of them to secretly stow away while Jiang Cheng is having an epic meltdown over fabric.
“800 thread count? Are you out of your goddamn minds? My only sister, and you expect us to throw her a wedding with disgraceful eight hundred thread count fabric?! Do we Jiangs look like barbarians to you?!”
The Jiang disciples go to Yiling, rush up the Burial Mounds, and shout very convincingly, “Da-shixiong! Da-shixiong! Zongzhu, he – he –”
Wei Wuxian, war-torn, living with ten thousand ghosts, and constantly on edge, panics immediately, jumps to the absolute worst conclusion, and doesn’t even clarify before he rushes down the mountain because oh god, oh god, no, not again, didn’t he leave so his siblings would be safe, didn’t he promise to keep Jiang Cheng safe?????
Wen Qing warily agrees to come along because they clearly now have this well-established ongoing unspoken agreement to constantly save each other’s little brothers.
If the Jiang disciples have caught Jiang Cheng brooding over a pretty redwood comb wrapped in a silk handkerchief more than once, then they don’t say anything. Just share silent looks of glee when no one is watching.
By the time they reach Lotus Pier, Wei Wuxian has worked himself up into such a state of frenzy that he bursts through the doors of Lotus Pier like a black thundercloud of overprotective fury and worry, screaming, “JIANG CHENG! JIANG CHENG!”
.... Jiang Cheng is sitting on the floor of the Sword Hall, surrounded by a mountain of square fabric samples, with bits of thread stuck in his hair, totally gobsmacked at the sight of his windswept big brother.
Wei Wuxian, still panicked, falls to the floor in front of him, grabs Jiang Cheng by the arms before he can even react, and frantically checks him over. “Are you okay? Are you hurt? What happened – I thought –”
Jiang Cheng stares at him. Wei Wuxian blinks. The Jiang disciples have all conveniently disappeared.
Behind them, Wen Qing heaves a big sigh, slow and long through pursed lips. She bows respectfully, says “I will be outside,” and gets the fuck out of there.
There is a tense silence. Wei Wuxian realizes he’s been tricked, but he is so overcome with relief after all that soul-crushing fear that he doesn’t even get mad, just sags forward with his face in Jiang Cheng’s chest as the adrenaline leaves him all at once. He pretends he’s not shaking.
Jiang Cheng doesn’t know if he wants to shove Wei Wuxian away, hug him back, or wrap him in as many blankets as he can possibly find until a-jie comes home. He does none of those, just demands, half-strangled, half-something-like-worry, “What the hell is wrong with you?”
“They said – I thought you were in trouble or – or –”
[long pause] “You – came all the way here shouting like a possessed lunatic because you thought I was in trouble?”
Wei Wuxian hunches a little defensively and starts to move away. “Of course I did.” He makes sure to add, with emphasis, “Idiot.”
It doesn’t matter if Jiang Cheng can’t make up his mind because apparently his hands can, and they grip both of Wei Wuxian’s elbows to keep his brother from pulling away. They stare at one another.
”You said you didn’t want anything to do with the Jiang sect.”
Wei Wuxian looks away, grumbling. “How else was I supposed to keep you and shijie safe? Besides, you’re the one who stabbed me.” He is very pouty about this.
Jiang Cheng, immediately incensed and indignant, shouts, “You broke my arm! I had to be in a cast for a whole month!”
An almost smile flashes over Wei Wuxian’s face. “Hey, it was only your left arm. You were still able to write.”
Jiang Cheng glares at him and shoves his shoulder. Wei Wuxian instinctively shoves him back. They stare. Wei Wuxian scrubs his face tiredly with his hands. Jiang Cheng has to push away the urge to motherhen with blankets again.
He says, “I never asked you to protect me.”
Wei Wuxian gives him a look. “I don’t need to be asked.”
Jiang Cheng grits his teeth. “I don’t want you to protect me, idiot.”
Wei Wuxian heaves a very resigned sigh. “Then what do you want?”
Several answers come up, all too serious and too revealing without the support of a-jie’s soup and copious amount of alcohol. So Jiang Cheng just throws a handful of fabric samples at Wei Wuxian’s face. “Help me pick through these until a-jie comes home. You should have fucking heard Jin Zixuan’s suggestions last week. If we let the peacock plan a-jie’s wedding, it’s going to be an absolute disaster.”
Wei Wuxian’s smile this time is real and genuine and lasts the entire afternoon of bickering over fabric squares until Jiang Yanli rushes into the pavilion with many Jiang disciples in tow and hugs both her brothers for the first time in months. They manage to not horribly cry all over each other.
Jiang Yanli insists Wen Qing has dinner with them. There’s plenty of soup after all. Jiang Cheng is awkwardly stiff and doesn’t look Wen Qing in the eye the entire time, and Wei Wuxian pokes him repeatedly with silent  what the hell is wrong with you.
They talk about growing turnips, purifying rice wine, that the scariest thing about Wen Ning is his ability to create a disturbingly large variety of dishes from turnips, and how Wei Wuxian has essentially adopted baby A-Yuan as his own.
Later, Jiang Yanli tells Wen Qing, with a smile, her eyes alight like a flame, that she will take care of it. Wen Qing has no idea what this means. Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian share a look as only little brothers with intimate knowledge of their big sister’s stubbornness could and wisely choose to remain silent.
Jiang Yanli enlists the help of both Jin Zixuan and Madam Jin and somehow does indeed take care of it.
Many back door conversations occur between Jiang, Jin, Lan, and Nie sects. Jin Zixuan is the sole Jin representative. Nie Mingjue is initially leery but comes at the behest of Huaisang and Xichen.
At some point, Wen Ning tells Wei Wuxian that if they are going to do this, then it’s best if they have no more secrets. Wei Wuxian glares and tries to pretend that he has no idea what he is talking about, but neither Jiang Yanli nor Jiang Cheng allow Wei Wuxian to run away this time.
There is an emotional golden core reveal, followed by an equally emotional I didn’t go back for their bodies, with lots of shouting, shoving, crying, and clinging. In the aftermath, the Jiang siblings form an even stronger co-dependent unit around each other.
Jiang Yanli coordinates with Lan Xichen (and a begrudgingly cooperative Jiang Cheng) to bring Lan Wangji to Lotus Pier to help Wei Wuxian control his powers. Wangxian are desperately cute, and Jiang Cheng makes pointed gagging sounds whenever he’s around them that leads to several incidents of lake shoving, an excitable gaggle of Jiang disciples swan diving into the water after them, and a very, very confused Lan.
In the end, Wei Wuxian refuses to hand over the Stygian Tiger Seal to any of the sects, but he does agree to destroy it if Wen Qing, Wen Ning, and the remaining Wens are granted clemency and allowed to live freely without persecution. Jiang, Lan, and Nie sects agree.
Jin Guangshan tries to make an uproar, but in a surprising turn of events, Jin Guangyao (grateful for Jiang Yanli’s non-judgmental kindness over the past year) reveals all of his father’s treacherous secrets, including ordering the slaughter of Wen civilians, pardoning and releasing Xue Yang, and purposefully fueling the mob against Wei Wuxian to acquire the seal for himself. Jin Guangshan is shamed, sentenced, and dies imprisoned some months later.
Jin Zixuan formally recognizes his newly renamed brother Jin Ziyao.
Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian decide that their sister is even scarier than they had believed.
The Wens leave the Burial Mounds and build a small village together in Yiling where they branch into farming non-turnip crops much to the delight of Wei Wuxian. Jiang disciples are dispatched to help with the construction of several buildings, including one extremely beautiful apothecary. Jiang Cheng is seen in Yiling fairly regularly.
Jin Zixun, the most vocal opponent against the pardons for Wei Wuxian and the Wens, tragically falls off a cliff one day. Sect Leader Yao tries to pin it on Wei Wuxian, but Jiang Cheng shuts him down with scathing ferocity.
Someone also puts a Silencing Spell on Sect Leader Yao and keeps it going. Every Lan swears it was not them and thus cannot remove the spell. It lasts for two glorious months. Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji get along disturbingly well from that point on.
Wei Wuxian is there when Jiang Yanli gets married in a magnificent splendor of red and gold. He is there to see Jin Ling born, to watch Jiang Cheng tie a purple bell to their nephew’s robes, and to gift little A-Ling a bracelet on his first month birthday. He is there to watch Jiang Cheng rebuild their sect with unending grit, respect, and loyalty. He is there to see Jin Ling and A-Yuan grow up underneath a sky he helped clear, loved and adored by all the different parts of their family. And some years after he and Lan Wangji are happily married, Wei Wuxian is there when his little brother dons red robes and bows to the heavens, to the earth, and to a woman with a redwood comb in her hair whose life became entwined with theirs so very long ago.
A prompt: Chief Cultivator Yao
Untamed
“I mean no offense, but that’s the stupidest suggestion I’ve ever heard,” Jin Guanshan said, only barely keeping his smile intact.
“He is aware that simply saying that he means no offense doesn’t make it any less offensive, right?” Wei Wuxian asked Jiang Cheng in a soft murmur, desperately happy in retrospect that he hadn’t decided to miss this meeting.
He didn’t attend most discussion conferences, even though he’d officially been recognized as a Sect Leader and therefore entitled to sit at the table – there wasn’t much point in arguing about cultivation territories and who did what when his ‘sect territory’ was limited to the Burial Mounds and his ‘sect’ consisted of himself and the only three Wens young enough to join a sect, one of which hadn’t yet passed his fourth birthday.
Still, he’d been a bit curious to know what was going to happen with the seemingly never-ending argument about who was going to be Chief Cultivator – whether Nie Mingjue would finally give in (unlikely, given the man’s personality) or if Jin Guangshan would find a way to get around him (possible).
He hadn’t expected Nie Mingjue to be the one to get around Jin Guangshan – especially not with such an…unorthodox proposal.
"You can't seriously be suggesting that we elect Sect Leader Yao to be Chief Cultivator!"
“I don’t see the problem,” Nie Mingjue said, heroically maintaining a straight face despite the slightest curve in his eyes that indicated a man who knew exactly what the problem with his suggestion was. “According to all the stories I’ve heard him tell, Sect Leader Yao has been at the forefront of every action in the past few years, large or small, no matter where or how implausibly quickly he must have traveled to get there.”
The unexpected man of the hour, Sect Leader Yao himself, was still gaping in shock at having been named, but at this he stirred a little, looking mildly panicked, and said, “Sect Leader Nie, I appreciate the compliment, but –”
“Nonsense! I would never stoop to baseless flattery –” That much was true, Wei Wuxian reflected, especially since exactly nothing that had come out of Nie Mingjue’s mouth really sounded all that much like a compliment if you listened closely. “– and though your sect is small, it can hardly be said that your voice is not heard during our discussions.”
“Constantly heard,” Jiang Cheng muttered under his breath.
“Come now, Sect Leader Nie,” Jin Guangshan said with a fake laugh. “The position of Chief Cultivator is a heavy one; if Sect Leader Yao is busy with his own affairs –”
“On the contrary,” Jiang Cheng blurted out, and suddenly everyone was turning to him; it was by now too late for him to reverse course, so he could only soldier on, saying, “It is well known that Sect Leader Yao is very generous with his time, isn’t it? I’ve never known him not to be happy to volunteer to involve himself with other people’s concerns.”
Wei Wuxian was not going to laugh. He was not.
“Uh, thank you, Sect Leader Jiang,” Sect Leader Yao said. He was now sweating. “While I appreciate –”
“Let us not forget Sect Leader Yao’s decisiveness,” Wei Wuxian interrupted, batting his eyelashes at the increasingly furious Jin Guangshan. “I find that no matter how little information there is available on a given issue, Sect Leader Yao is always ready at hand with an opinion.”
“Well said, Sect Leader Wei,” Nie Mingjue said before Sect Leader Yao can put in a word. “Yet equally important, he is not inflexible, which I admit I can sometimes be – I have never known Sect Leader Yao to remain fixed on a position if the wind appears to be blowing in another direction.”
“Sect Leaders, please,” Lan Xichen said, and he looked somewhere between trying to resist laughing (much like the rest of them were) and feeling genuinely apologetic for the situation Sect Leader Yao had found himself in. “Sect Leader Yao is a devoted member of our group, and he has always tried very hard, and regardless of the outcome of his efforts or lack thereof, he is still very good –”
Someone in the audience guffawed.
Lan Xichen appeared to belatedly realize that he’d given Sect Leader Yao a ‘good person’ card and flushed.
“Nevertheless,” Jin Guangshan said with gritted teeth, “it does seem somewhat inappropriate to burden the leader of such a small sect with such a high title -”
“Why?” Nie Mingjue said, and bared his teeth at Jin Guangshan in what could only barely be pretended to be a smile. “There are more of them together than there are of us. Are you suggesting that a small sect leader could never become Chief Cultivator?”
“No, no, of course not! It’s only that I wouldn’t want him to feel obligated to accept –”
“As we all know, Sect Leader Yao’s first thought is always the emotions of others,” Jiang Cheng said, apparently still bitter about the time Sect Leader Yao had told Jin Ling – still a toddler – to stop crying already. “But he is also very cautious to always be in the right on any issue that crosses his path –”
“Anything less would be beneath the level of dignity with which he always conducts himself,” Wei Wuxian interjected.
“…yes, that. In sum, surely he would not deny himself the honor we are all so eager to give him?”
“It is exactly as Sect Leader Jiang said,” Nie Mingjue said. “I think we’re all in agreement at what qualities Sect Leader Yao possesses that would make him the ideal Chief Cultivator –”
Wei Wuxian couldn’t help but notice the lack of any adjective indicating whether those qualities were good or bad.
“– and so the matter would seem to be to be settled in perfect compromise. I propose a toast.”
“Seconded!” Wei Wuxian said immediately, lifting his cup.
“Hear hear,” Jiang Cheng said, somewhat unenthusiastically.
Lan Xichen simply held up his cup with a smile and no words, appearing to require all of his considerable willpower in not breaking up laughing – an battle that a number of small sect leaders were currently losing.
“What say you, Chief Cultivator?”
“Well,” Sect Leader Yao said, still looking dazed, “I suppose if everyone agrees…”
Jin Guangshan had a murderous expression on his face, but his face wasn’t quite thick enough to stand against the majority like this; he lifted his cup as well. “Best wishes,” he growled.
The discussion conferences broke for the night soon afterwards.
“Are you sure that was a good idea?” Jiang Cheng asked Wei Wuxian. “I didn’t actually mean to speaking in his favor, it’s only, you know…”
“You have trouble hearing outright lies be told,” Wei Wuxian said agreeably, nodding. “No, this is great; I can see exactly what Sect Leader Nie was thinking – our new ‘Chief Cultivator’ lacks the backbone to make and stick with any decision, which is the same as never making any decisions at all. The role will become purely ornamental.”
“Exactly,” Nie Mingjue said, his voice deep as he appeared behind the two of them, Nie Huaisang trailing behind. “I thank you both for your timely support.”
“Of course,” they both said, saluting; he saluted them back and departed, although Nie Huaisang remained behind with a smile when Wei Wuxian waved at him behind his brother’s back.
“Who thought of that scheme?” Wei Wuxian asked. “It was brilliant.”
“Oh, it was all da-ge’s idea; I had no idea what he was planning until he did it,” Nie Huaisang confessed gleefully. “Er-ge’s been playing music for him regularly to help improve his mood, which I think has been helping; I haven’t seen him make trouble like that in years.”
“It was a true work of art in mischief-making,” Wei Wuxian agreed. “I salute the masters.”
Nie Huaisang laughed and saluted back. “In a contest of making mischief, if you claim to be second, who would dare be first? No, no, my sect cannot bear to hold this honor; it must belong to you.”
“On the contrary, I insist –”
“If you two dare get started with your nonsense, I’m going to find a river and push you both in,” Jiang Cheng threatened. “Come help me with something important instead: figuring out how to convince our new ‘Chief Cultivator’ that he doesn’t need to give speeches at the start of every discussion conference the way Sect Leader Jin has been doing…”
“But Sect Leader Jiang!” Wei Wuxian protested earnestly, his eyes dancing in amusement. “If we don’t have those speeches, we might actually have to be awake at the start time…”
family dinner
Modern AU Jin siblings vs. Jin Guangshan (crossposted on Ao3):
Jin Zixuan leans against the side of his yellow Audi and checks his Rolex Daytona watch. Behind his car are the massive white gates of the Jin mansion, a massive complex with no less than four houses, two gardens, one lotus pond, a garage for the rest of his car collection, and a private movie theater in the basement. Normally, he would open the gates and let himself through, but tonight, Jin Zixuan has no intention of going down the lonely, two-lane road to the main house alone.
The time is 7:18. He has only twelve minutes left, and no one is here. Jin Zixuan shifts nervously in his Stuart Hughes suit (Diamond Edition) and represses the urge to check his watch again. Instead of checking it, he worries until his heart is thump-thumping in his chest and all he can feel is the bitter cold air on his bare fingers.
He’s twenty-seven years old, with a two year old son, and he’s still nervous about the coming dinner. He would be less nervous if his mother was coming, but she hasn’t been back to the Jin family home since she divorced his father almost a decade ago–long enough to see Jin Zixuan through high school–and he was not about to ask. Instead, he’d asked the rest of his family.
He’s musing on the meaning of family and obligation when the first car pulls up. It’s a white Rolls-Royce, and it carries a single passenger: Jin Zixuan’s younger brother, Jin Guangyao. His half-brother wears a crisp dark cream-colored Brioni suit, and he adjusts the small osmanthus flower tucked into the pocket when he straightens.
“No one else is here yet?” Jin Guangyao questions, like he can’t see it with his own eyes.
“Not yet,” Jin Zixuan says shortly.
His brother continues smiling despite his terse tone. Jin Guangyao has never been anything but friendly to Jin Zixuan since he came into his life several years ago, which is why Jin Zixuan is half-terrified of him. The other half of him wants to intervene everytime his father so much as looks in Jin Guangyao’s direction, and half of the time he does, so needless to say, they have a rather complicated relationship.
“I’m sure they’ll be here,” Jin Guangyao offers, still smiling sweetly.
Jin Zixuan isn’t so sure. Realistically, there’s no reason for all of them to come just to support him. The only reason Jin Zixuan is going, beyond the convention of his father’s annual dinners, is because Jin Zixuan is in fact aware of his skills in life. As of the moment, Jin Zixuan is the sole inheritor of his father’s fortune. Despite the number of half-siblings that Jin Zixuan apparently has, or perhaps because of it, he is confident that he will always be the sole inheritor. That is, unless Jin Guangshan decides to withhold the inheritance to remind Jin Zixuan that he is the only way Jin Zixuan can provide for his family. So Jin Zixuan needs the inheritance, no matter what A-Li says.
Which is why he’s standing here, on his twenty-seventh birthday, trying not to look too nervous as his brother calmly locks his car door.
“Thank you for coming, A-Yao,” Jin Zixuan finally says, forced but sincere.
Realistically Jin Guangyao knows that he can expect better treatment from his half-brother than he can with Jin Guangshan as the CEO of Jin Industries, but naively Jin Zixuan still hopes that Jin Guangyao has some room for frivolous things like brotherly affection and genuine kindness.
Jin Guangyao puts his keys in his pocket and walks around his car to the gate. He’s not a moment too soon: a silver car rolls in after Jin Guangyao’s Rolls-Royce, and parks just a little too close for comfort.
The first out of the silver car is Qin Su, from the driver’s seat. The gold trim and white hem of her floor-length evening gown trails over the edge of the car as she exits, and as she stands up Jin Zixuan realizes that she really went all-out. Shes dressed in white and gold, complete with a pink peony flower, and her hair and face indicates that she spent at least two hours getting ready. From the way she walks up to him in her white high-heels, Jin Zixuan knows that she knows that she’s stunning. If she wasn’t his daughter, Jin Guangshan would probably make a comment about it. He might anyway.
“The new style suits you, A-Su,” Jin Guangyao says politely.
“Thank you,” Qin Su says, her pretty eyes flashing. “It’s what my mother wore.”
She doesn’t specify when, but Jin Zixuan winces anyway. “I didn’t think you would come,” he says helplessly.
“And miss a chance to ruin your father’s evening?” Qin Su retorts, and smiles beatifically. “I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”
The last sibling emerges from the copilot seat. “It’s your birthday celebration, isn’t it?” Mo Xuanyu points out.
He’s wearing ripped jeans, a tank top, and heavy black eyeliner and eyeshadow. Jin Zixuan wisely does not comment. Mo Xuanyu pulls on a black puffer jacket as he speaks, which makes him the only one with adequate protection from the chilly February temperature. He’s also the youngest here; Qin Su picked him up from his university on the way here.
“Technically,” Jin Zixuan says instead.
Mo Xuanyu shrugs and jams his hands into his pockets. “Then what are we waiting for?”
Jin Zixuan checks his Rolex again, and the golden watch hands proclaim the time to be 7:24. “We’re still waiting on a few more people who said they’d show up.”
 “Who?” Mo Xuanyu asks curiously, and it’s at that moment that a flaming red and black sports car comes roaring down the road, and Mo Xuanyu’s face lights up.
The door is kicked open, and Jin Zixuan’s brother-in-law flings himself out. Wei Wuxian emerges in a black Armani suit, now the tallest person in their smallest gathering, and grins.
“I didn’t know you were coming,” Mo Xuanyu squeaks, and Jin Zixuan holds back a wince. His youngest brother has the most embarrassing idol crush on Wei Wuxian, which is only embarrassing because–
“Mn.” Out of nowhere, Jin Zixuan’s brother-in-law (-in-law?) places himself in front of Wei Wuxian, straightening his white suit coat like it’s even a millimeter out of place. He glares Mo Xuanyu down, and Jin Zixuan goes from feeling embarrassed for his brother to feeling sorry for him.
“You brought him?” Jin Zixuan complains to Wei Wuxian before he can stop himself.
“Where I go, Lan Zhan goes,” Wei Wuxian retorts. They’re already holding hands. Jin Zixuan hates this.
Wei Wuxian’s husband levels his icy glare on Jin Zixuan, and suddenly Jin Zixuan is imagining that glare leveled at his father when Jin Guangshan inevitably tries to get world-renown bioengineer Wei Wuxian to work for Jin Industries again. Perhaps bringing him along isn’t such a bad idea after all.
“It’s lovely to see you,” Qin Su offers, and the glare is gone, just like that.
“But not as lovely as you are tonight,” Wei Wuxian says smoothly, and the glare is back.
Jin Zixuan pinches the bridge of his nose with two fingers and sighs. He’s so busy sighing that he almost misses the arrival of the last car, a violently purple Jaguar that for once is not racing around at nearly illegal speeds.
“You’re late,” Jin Zixuan snaps, when the driver’s door opens.
“I was helping my sister get ready, asshole,” Jiang Cheng snaps right back, slamming his door closed. He straightens the cuffs of his dark purple suit before opening the copilot door for said sister.
Jiang Yanli ducks gracefully out of the car, and Jin Zixuan’s heart immediately goes gooey in his chest. He’s afraid that his face does, as well, because Wei Wuxian makes a disgusted face at him.
She wears a layered dress of lavender and rose pink, and the skirts skim over the ground as she steps out of the car. In her arms, she carries a precious little bundle that Jin Zixuan loves with all his heart, and now he knows that his face has gone all gooey with emotions because his wife smiles at him, which really doesn’t help with the emotions.
Jin Zixuan holds out his arms, and Jiang Yanli places their tiny baby bun in his arms.
“I’ve finally got him sleeping,” Jiang Yanli says in a hushed voice, and for a moment there’s silence as everyone welcomes the newest, sleepiest, cutest little dumpling to their growing party.
Jin Ling’s little face is puckered up even in his sleep like he’s thinking hard. Jin Zixuan’s small, sweet bao of a son is dressed in a matching pair of a white jacket and snowpants, complete with a white yarn hat that’s the size of his entire head.
“It’s good to see you, A-Li,” Qin Su says finally, once the moment of silence has passed.
Jiang Yanli smiles. “You too, A-Su,” she says. “We should get the group back together one of these days.”
Jin Zixuan isn’t sure whether he’s terrified or pleased. Jiang Yanli’s friends from college are a force of nature, and given that they’ve gone on to become a rising neurosurgeon, an environmental scientist, an urban planner, and in Jiang Yanli’s case, a child psychiatrist, they’d be even more a force of nature now.
“I wanna hold him,” Wei Wuxian says in a stage whisper.
Jin Zixuan directs his best glare at him, holds his sweet little dumpling closer, and prays that his wife won’t cave to Wei Wuxian’s puppy dog eyes.
“I believe it’s time,” Jin Guangyao intervenes smoothly, swooping in before a fight can break out.
Jin Zixuan shoots him a grateful look, even though he’s mostly sure that Jin Guangyao didn’t intervene just so that he wouldn’t have to turn his darling baby son over to his brother-in-law.
“It is 7:30,” Qin Su agrees.
Mo Xuanyu cracks his fingers, grins wickedly, and then puts on a pair of black shades, just to match his black puffer jacket. “Let’s go ruin Dad’s night.”
“Can we not get him to call the cops on us?” Jin Zixuan asks, one step short of begging.
“My dad is on speed dial in case anyone needs a ride,” Qin Su says, tucking her phone into her purse.
Of course. The CEO of Qin Industries on speed dial. Though Jin Zixuan supposes that that move is fair, considering that Qin Cangye knows his daughter is going to Jin Guangshan’s house.
“I think we have enough cars,” Jin Guangyao says.
“But let’s not burn the house down?” Jin Zixuan pleads. It’s true that he asked all of them to come, but please come, I don’t want to be alone with A-Li is not the same as please, I want to pay for damages.
“No promises.” Wei Wuxian smirks.
“Nothing that can be proven,” Jiang Cheng adds. Jin Zixuan belatedly remembers that he’d invited them because he knew they would defend A-Li if his father even looked at her funny. Which he might. God, Jin Zixuan hated his family.
“What else is family for?” Wei Wuxian retorts.
Oh no. Jin Zixuan’s heart is going all gooey again, and this time it isn’t from the adorable sleepy bun in his arms. He furiously tries to force down a blush that heats his cheeks in the cold winter air.
Jiang Yanli notices, because of course she does, and she steps closer to pat his arm. “He won’t burn the house down,” she says reassuringly.
Jin Zixuan is privately still dubious, but he doesn’t argue. He turns to the grand white gates. Jin Guangyao stands on his left and half a head shorter, and Jiang Yanli stands to his right. His two other siblings and three in-laws gather behind him.
Then, with his family dressed to the nines and ready for war, Jin Zixuan unlocks the white gates and sets forth to ruin his dad’s night.
Ok I know everyone thinks jgy familiarized himself with human anatomy before stabbing himself or whatever, but I'm curious to know if you think there's any textual support for him impulsively doing it actually meaning to kill himself due to an overwhelming amount of emotion and then immediately regretting it and running away in case nmj decided to help him finish the job?
does everyone think this...? 🤔 i mean, i tend to believe that he stabbed himself in such a way that he hoped he would survive, but i truthfully don't think he knew without a doubt that he would. jgy is not opposed to high stakes gambling and risk-taking in any iteration of the canon imo, particularly if the potential reward is high enough (e.g., embedding himself within wen ruohan's court to make it virtually impossible for his father not to legitimize him at the end of the war), or if he believes he has no choice (e.g., taking jin ling hostage to facilitate his failed escape attempt from the guanyin temple).
how do i put this: i don't think jgy is afraid to die, as long as he feels he is dying for the right reason. particularly in cql, i believe he throws himself in front of wen zhuliu's sword to protect nie mingjue knowing that stopping that blow could kill him. but he does it because he is willing to risk his life in that moment to protect nie mingjue from harm, because at that point in the show, he still deeply respects and cares for nmj. even after that, i think cql meng yao is fully prepared to be executed by nmj, and is genuinely shocked when it doesn't happen.
anyway. i sort of lost my train of thought sdfjlsld sorry anon, but the tl;dr is that i don't think meng yao knew that he was going to survive that blow! i think he did hope, tho, and so was ready to seal nmj's spiritual the second he got the chance.
