The Great ACT-NSW-NZ Trip, 2023-2024 - Whanganui Regional Museum

We stopped for a few hours in Whanganui, so I could see the Moa wing at the museum there, and the rest of the exhibits. Excellent collection, including Superman's fight against superpowered Moa, and the famous Aotearoan Derpseal.

Nice displays of the many other fossils from the area, meteorites, Māori artefacts, and a temporary exhibition of some of Gottfried Lindauer's oustanding portraits of various Māori chiefs and other personages.

Lindau

Lindau, das auch “Lindau am Bodensee” heißt, ist eine Stadt in Bayern mit sechsundzwanzigtausend Leuten. Die Altstadt, die sehr schön und historisch ist, liegt auf einer kleinen Insel im östelichen Teil des Bodensees. Es befindet sich in der Nähe von beide Österreich und der Schweiz, und auch von dem deutschen Land von Baden-Württemberg. Jedes Jahr seit 1951 finden die Lindauer Nobelpreisträgertagungen in der Stadt statt, und viele Menschen kommen nach Lindau um wichtige Gespräche zu führen. Lindau hat zwei großen Bahnhöfen: Lindau-Insel, und Lindau-Reutin, der auf dem Festland liegt. Die Stadt ist beliebt für Touristen wegen ihrer Lage am Bodensee und ihrer gut erhaltenen Altstadt. Manche Sehenswürdigkeiten sind das Alte Rathaus, das Münster Unserer Lieben Frau, und die Peterskirche, die eine der ältesten Kirchen am Bodensee ist.

Trolling the Neighbors

Ants are not often thrilled to have other ants as neighbors. They sometimes express distaste by locating their garbage pile on the nest entrance of unwanted ants next door. They may even collect debris for the singular purpose of plugging up the offending hole.

(Jordan Dean has recorded Camponotus consobrinus in Australia doing this, and it seems Dorymyrmex aka Conomyrma do it too. Here is a link to the time-stamp in his video about this interaction. This has also been documented in the lit by Hodobler in 1984 only he observed Camponotus consobrinus nests being blocked by Iridomyrmex pruinosus, or rainbow meat ants... implying multiple nest blocking interactions in multi-species communities of ants)

This behavior is called "stone dropping" or "soil dropping" in the lit. (Rather than "trolling") sometimes "nest-plugging"

“There is this idea that victims of interpersonal violence must be perfect in this very specific way,” Lindauer says. “They can’t be sexual beings. They have to be cisgender, they have to be white, they have to be pure. They have to be all of these to even be able to assert that they’ve been harmed.
