2022 Writing Evaluation

I was tagged by the wonderful Bella @clumsyclifford (thank you for digging this up and tagging me first because i 100% was going to do it anyway lol)

also my pseudonyms are combined on ao3 so although this is my 5sos blog you will be hearing about my other fandom writing as well

1. number of stories posted on ao3: 17!

2. word count posted for this year: 124,269 on ao3, 23,433 for ask box prompts, so a grand total of 147,702!

3. fandoms i wrote for: 5sos, 1d, It (2017 and 2019 movies), Stranger Things, HSMTMTS, Cobra Kai

4. pairings: on ao3 we have some nice crisp muke, lashton, mashton, mashton (friendship version), cashton, cake, malum, narry, lilo (and then also kiaz and caswen (friendship(?) version) and reddie and hellcheer).  adding in the ask box prompts and we also have 5sos ot4, roylum, and lashton (friendship version)

5. story with the most kudos/bookmarks/comments: for all of those it’s technically my hellcheer fic, but for the 5sos ones hits and kudos are The Catch, comment threads is pas de deux! 

6. work i’m most proud of (and why): pas de deux hands down no question.  it’s my longest fic by over 20k!  i wrote it almost constantly from november to december and had a goal to post each chapter on christmas and the four sundays leading up to it and i actually accomplished that goal!!!! i’ve never successfully focused on one particular fic for that long, and it actually worked!!! plus, for such a long fic, i think i did a relatively good job of keeping characterizations consistent and sensical throughout, as well as finding little themes to carry through the entire fic (which i got lucky with tbh, some things that became running pieces of the fic were not planned out before, i just caught them as they were happening).  i haven’t read the fic back since completing it so it’s possible it’s not as cohesive or as good as i think it is, but i’m extremely proud of myself for it nonetheless.

7. work i’m least proud of (and why): right now, it’s probably when i watch the world burn.  i struggled with that one and in the end i don’t think it quite got to where i wanted it to, but i was on a time crunch.  it’s a lot different from what i usually write, but i don’t know if i made that transition to a different story style and topic as smoothly as i would have liked.

8. share or describe a favorite review you received: someone left a very long and gratifying comment on both Puzzle Pieces and its sequel Bedroom Activities back in February.  grey114 if you see this i love you.  it was really gratifying to get a comment on a piece that i love so much that was over a year old at that point, especially since they said it was a reread and they just touched on a lot of things in a really sweet way and that made me feel very happy to have written those fics.

also i know this doesn’t technically count because it got it today but amanda read when i watch the world burn (again, not my proudest work) and said that although this “isn’t her kind of fic” she said that that particular fic is the “biggest proof that it’s the writer more than the content or pairing” because she enjoyed it, which was really nice to hear especially when i’m not feeling the best about it.  it’s also just an insane compliment because i absolutely love amanda’s writing, and every time a writer i love also confirms that they really like my stuff it makes me feel good lol

9. a time when writing was really, really hard: the entire first 3/4 of the year, tbh!  i was in a big writing slump earlier in the year and it seemed to keep going forever, then I was super busy in the summer and simply didn’t have time.  i don’t think i hit my writing stride again until i let myself impulse-write for other fandoms.  i think that’s what i really started to realize exactly what it means to write what you love uninhibited, rather than writing what you think you should.  like. i have 10k of an angsty caswen at college fic in my drive that may never see the light of day because it’d be super long, but letting myself go to town on that with no expectations of necessarily posting it or even completing it was really healthy for me and extremely enjoyable, and it loosened all the writing mechanisms in my brain to get me back in a writing groove.

10. a scene or character you wrote that surprised you: hmmmmm let’s see.  honestly i was most surprised to write anything for hsmtmts or cobra kai, let alone something from johnny’s pov, but for 5sos stuff i was surprised to write so much feldy.  he became a pretty big player in pas de deux and when initially planning that fic i don’t think i realized how much screen time he would have.  ashton’s characterization in when i watch the world burn was also surprising.  i didn’t know when i started writing that he would be like that.

11. a favorite excerpt of your writing:  here’s a little bit of the ending of undeniable you

When Ashton fully wakes up, he can hear spring rain pattering against the roof.  The room is still blanketed in gray, but Michael is still glowing, even if Ashton only has a view of his bedhead from the way they’re cuddled together.  He shifts right before Ashton musters up the willpower to leave the comforting warmth of their bedroom and begin breakfast, as if he can sense that Ashton would rather spend the morning talking with him in appropriately hushed tones than leaving the cozy atmosphere that surrounds them.  His eyes are fuzzy and sleepy when he blinks up at him, but he smiles like he’s never been more sure of his place here.

12. how did you grow as a writer this year? i finally truly understood what it means to write for myself!!!! to write for the enjoyment of writing!!!! to stop holding myself to arbitrary standards of what fics i should be working on and how often!!!!!! this year i really let myself work on what i want when i want, and it really did wonders for me.  also, i discovered that for the most part outlining does genuinely help me

13. how do you hope to grow next year? mostly i want to continue to write what i want to write.  i want to maintain this peace and enjoyment of writing that i’ve found and continue to treat myself with kindness when it comes to this hobby and not let it become unpleasant.  that being said, i do also want to focus on individual projects more.  i think the key to ensuring these two things aren’t mutually exclusive is to find projects that i genuinely love and to add little bits in there for me to enjoy, like all of the minnesota references (and the csi miami reference) in pas de deux.

EDIT: I also want to start replying to comments this year! i might not reply to new comments on old fics just because i’d feel weird not replying to the comments before (and i have fics form 2016, so i feel like it’d be weird if i went back and replied to those) but i’ll at least reply to comments put on pas de deux onwards.

14. who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer or beta or cheerleader or muse etc etc)? okay i’m going to list four (4!!!) different people.  bella @clumsyclifford and annie @carouselstars have both been extremely supportive, especially while i’ve been complaining in the club nearly every day for the past two months.  they’re always encouraging me.  i also need to give a big shout out to megs @igarbagecannoteven and gregory @doomeddiabetic for being great sounding boards! pas de deux would not have been completed without megs helping me sort things out in the very beginning, and gregory is willing to talk shop about fandoms they’re not even part of.

15. anything from your real life show up in your writing this year? little things here and there!  it’s most prevalent in pas de deux, where i highkey projected onto both characters and forced them to exist in minneapolis.  i have been to mia and love all of the art pieces i mentioned in chapter 3. my favorite ballet is dances at a gathering.  i, like calum, must always remind people of famous minnesotans.  shayla is my favorite newscaster.  i watch csi miami and ncis when i need something mindless on in the background.  i namedropped my old tech director and ballet teacher in that one.  pas de deux is full of little hazel pieces lol

16. any new wisdom you can share with other writers? find what pleases you!  find what you enjoy, and don’t turn writing into a chore that you have to do, but rather a special treat to enjoy!  this doesn’t mean that it’s going to be sunshine and rainbows all the time, of course.  maybe you’re the type of writer who gets immense satisfaction from finishing a difficult piece, and that far outweighs the frustration and struggles to write it!  everyone is going to be different with figuring out what constitutes enjoyment, but that’s what helped me, at least.

17. any projects you’re looking forward to starting (or finishing) in the new year? i’m trying not to put too much pressure on myself but i really hope to finish three particular 5sos fics.  i think they could become my new favorites.  i also have a cobra kai fic that i’d love to write!  also, i really want to post at least one chapter of unmute, given that i didn’t do that this year

Studio Ghibli Reviews: Ponyo (2008)

Ponyo was another creation of the mind of Hayao Miyazaki, who derived inspiration from a number of sources, including The Little Mermaid (the original Hans Christian Andersen story), Millais' 1852 painting Ophelia, the coastal town of Tomonoura, and the young daughter of Studio Ghibli animation director Katsuya Kondō. Needless to say, the end-result is a stunningly animated and heartfelt story with a simple premise: a magical girl meets a human boy and the two fall in love.

Plot: Set in modern-day Japan, the human boy in question, Sōsuke, lives with his mother Lisa on a cliff by the sea. Deep in the ocean, the magical girl (whose original form is a small red fish with a human face) lives with her menagerie of sisters, and are the children of a human-turned-sea wizard named Fujimoto and the Mother of the Ocean herself (or Granmamare). Ponyo's father resents the human world for its incessant pollution and disrespect for marine life, but Ponyo's curiosity and frustration lead her to escape one day, coming to the surface and meeting Sōsuke. The two immediately hit it off but are unfortunately separated. After Ponyo gets into her father's elixirs, she gains a burst of magical energy and dramatically overturns the balance of nature to reunite with the boy she adores. Only then does the real test of love begin: can the children navigate their new-found relationship and truly love one another as they are, magic or no?

- this review will be mainly spoiler-free -

Ponyo is my second favorite of the Ghibli films. I adore this movie. It's probably the one Ghibli film (next to My Neighbor Totoro) that is mainly geared to very young audiences. As a general rule, the minimum target audience for any one Ghibli film is the age of the youngest main character. Ponyo and Sōsuke are 5-years-old, so 5-year-olds would (and seemingly do) enjoy this. But, here's the thing, these movies are so timeless and universal that just about anyone at any age can enjoy it. I took my Madre to see the Ghibli Fest theatrical re-release recently and she considered it one of her favorite movies she's seen. She was in tears. Sometimes a simple movie mainly geared for children brings out those feelings in you. That's how I feel about this movie.

One thing that really stands out about Ponyo is the animation and art direction. The entire film was traditionally animated, absolutely no CGI for even the boats, and the backgrounds are mainly watercolors and pastels. The character designs, in contrast, are relatively simple with defined outlines and not a lot of intricate patterning on clothing. In a sense, I find the vibes of this movie somewhere in the ballpark of WDAS films like Dumbo or Lilo & Stitch, though unlike the former this was certainly not because of costs (Ponyo had a budget of ¥3.4 billion compared to Howl's Moving Castle's ¥2.4 billion) but instead to showcase what traditional animation methods were capable of. And it shows. The scenes of Ponyo riding the stormy, fishy waves or those shots that are just covered in marine organisms are absolutely mesmerizing. And the style also works to bring a "story book feel" to the film, which, considering the type of story being told, absolutely works.

The story itself and how it plays out is very sweet and charming. Much of the time is spent with the two leads who, remember, are 5-year-olds just... enjoying life! Ponyo is an excitable and mischievous kid and Sōsuke is definitely more simmered-down (the result of navigating life as "the man of the house", as his father, Kōichi, is a captain and away very often). But Sōsuke is no less adventurous and playful, so when the two interact you can just feel their mutual affection and joy for each other. This is a love story, but it's not treated as romantic (thankfully, these are children afterall).

The rest of the main cast consist of the different adult guardians to our young leads. Ponyo's father Fujimoto is a curious mix of flamboyant and awkward with a hardened and stern interior that perfectly fits a magical sea-wizard with desires to return the oceans to their glory days (this also means ending "the age of humans", and considering the historical details I've been reading in Callum Roberts' book The Unnatural History of the Sea, he should really focus on ending the medieval-age institutions that actually got us to this point). However, Fujimoto is not a traditional villain and (in Ghibli fashion) is at least sympathetic when it comes to his role as father and protector of his children. Granmamare, in contrast, is an almost polar opposite based on the few scenes we have of her: she carries herself with such grace and elegance and holds no ill-will towards humans - she is also the Goddess of Mercy - openly challenging her husband's ideals in an attempt to bring happiness to her daughter. She is also stunningly animated and I never fail to glue my eyes to the screen whenever she shows up (what does this say about me? None of your business). Speaking of mothers, Lisa (Sōsuke's mom) is also a ton of fun and steals every scene she's in, whether it's her perilous driving skills or her patience with Ponyo's antics.

All of this is supported by a great voice cast (as per all my reviews, this is based on the English dub). Props to the Walt Disney Studios for getting actual children to voice these child characters (and not 30-year-old women doing kid voices...). Noah Cyrus (Ponyo) and Frankie Jonas (Sōsuke) do a phenomenal job and bring a lot of energy fitting to the characters on screen. Liam "I have a particular set of skills" Neeson is Fujimoto and if you think that his voice doesn't match his character than you are sorely mistaken. I find the contrast so hilarious and perfect. Cate Blanchett is Granmamare and I mean come on that just makes me love this character even more. We also have Tina Fey as Lisa who adds a lot of motherly-charm, Matt Damon as Kōichi who, for the few scenes he's in does very well. I have failed to mention a whole gaggle of elderly ladies also features in the film (residents of the retirement home Lisa works at) who are just great. One of them (Yoshie) is voiced by the late Betty White and if that doesn't just eat me up every time I watch this movie.

The musical score is once again courtesy of Joe Hisaishi and it's definitely one of those Ghibli soundtracks that just sucks me into the film. It's just so majestic and otherworldly and this totally fits with the ocean setting. The opening number Mother of the Sea is a lovely operatic piece that (and I just now realized this) translates into a recollection of Granmamare's past with Fujimoto under the waves. Oof. My heart. But the highlight of the film is the end-credits song Gake no Ue no Ponyo sung by the main leads, which is just adorable and ear-wormy in the best way. No, I don't care for the remix version. No one does.

Overall, Ponyo is one of those movies that never fails to put a smile on my face. I can't be upset watching it. It's so cathartic. This is a movie to watch after you've had a bad day or you just need a pick-me-up. The charming characters, gorgeous scenery, and simple plot (in which several parts of the film are just the characters having a chance to breathe) are like medicine in a world of films that are nothing but rapid-fire scenes, big complicated plots, and cynical humor. It is that fact that makes me return to this movie over and over again. Having these two adorable kids as main leads also helps.

i am here with an update.

last week i was off work due to spring break and had many high hopes to spend my time off writing and updating my masterlist. 

unfortunately, due to my cats getting fleas from the vet (treated and finally free of the leeches), feeling burnt out from my two jobs and the class i just finished, i spent my time differently. apparently, i am only capable of writing when i have too much going on and spend free time doing nothing but binging k dramas and playing harry potter lego years 1-7 on my switch. 🤣

i had previously felt stuck on the CEO Jungkook story i am writing, and it IS currently 19 pages long, but after reviewing what i needed for the other 2 remaining stories, i realized that i need to write CEO Jin first in order to do Jungkook and Jimin’s justice. 

i will be working on CEO Jin (titled Grey Area: Avoiding the Red) now, and luckily i will not have to remove a lot of the 19 pages of Jungkook’s, but i will be able to provide a much more fluid story with this rearrangement. the banner is made, i hope it excites you like it does me!

i know many of you have been waiting years since i started the series, and i appreciate every single one of you for putting up with my adhd and 2 jobs and school and everything else that happens in my life.

American Dragon: Jake Long retro-review

American Dragon: Jake Long is a series that was created by Jeff Goode. The series aired on Disney Channel from January 21, 2005 to September 1, 2007. It has 52 episodes (22 minutes each, a few divided by two 11 minutes segments). The first season consists of 21 episodes. The second season has 31 episodes. The series also had a crossover episode with Lilo and Stitch The Series called  "Morpholomew".

Show premise

American Dragon:Jake Long is about a 13 year old Chinese-American boy named Jake Long who plays the role of protector for all magical creatures in United States. He is able transform into a dragon when he pleases, a power he inherited from his maternal side of the family. Guided by grandfather, Luong Lao Shi, Jakes tries to balance his life between being a regular teenager and dragon magical protector, something that it isn’t always as easy as it sounds.

Plot and structure

One thing that made this series stand out from other shows of its era was that there was a bigger storyline that developed through the seasons. Every 4-5 episodes there were events that changed the status quo or continued the story. Characters developed and were explored in different ways throughout the series too.

Season 1 is more episodic with the episodes often acting as standalone stories rather than adding to the bigger narrative. Every 4 episodes or so the main arc is explored or new lore is revealed. Despite of this, the stories still remained to fun. There is still character development and things that are set up for Season 2 arcs.  There are a few episodes that are divided in two 11 minutes segments for some reason. My only guess is that they were still experimenting with the format and seeing which one worked better for the show.

In Season 2 the writing and direction overall changes notably. There is a lot more emphasis in the main story arcs and there are some subplots in between as well, keeping the show more enganging. The series’ tone becomes more darker while maintaining the humor from the first season in character development episodes. In my opinion, this season has a good balance between ¨plot episodes¨ and ¨character episodes¨. For every 2-3 ¨character episodes¨ there is one ¨plot episode¨. That way it doesn’t feel it is going too slow or too rushed. Season 1 had less continuity when compared to Season 2. In addition to this, there is more emotional depth in the stories. As i was rewatching the series, i felt like the characters were given a lot more dimension to them. Their issues became more personal. Some episodes were dedicated to explore how they felt about certain important event and how they dealt with it.

If there is one complain i have of this season is that after the episode ¨Homecoming¨ the main story looses it focus and there isn’t more proper set up for the other main arc. This could be traced back to the fact that these two main stories were supposed to be in two different seasons and the team felt forced to writer them all in one long season in case the show got cancelled.

Another issue is that some important plot episodes like  "Homecoming" and  "The Hong Kong Longs" should have been 44 minute episodes to cover all the things that happen in them. Because they only last 22 minutes, this makes the events feel very rushed, specially in "The Hong Kong Longs" it ruins important character beats.

Characters and arcs

While i talked about how American Dragon has a big plot, the core of the series is its characters and their relationships. The main focus of the show is Jake trying to balance his teenager daily life with his guardian dragon duties. This means most episode conflicts center around him learning things or developing in some way.

The main cast consist in:

Jake Long: The main protagonist and star of the show

Luong Lao Shi: Jake’s grandfather and teacher. He used to be the Chinese Dragon when he was younger and is able to transform in a dragon just like Jake.

Fu Dog: A 600 year old magical talking dog that helps Lao and Jake in their missions.

Trixie Carter: One of Jake’s best friends. She earlier learns about his dragon identity and helps him in many missions.

Arthur P. "Spud" Spudinski: The other Jake’s best friend. He learns about Jake’s dragon identity at same time as Trixie and helps him in many missions.

Haley Kay Long: Jake’s little sister. She is a child prodigy and she is able to use her dragon powers yet not as powerful as Jake’s.

Susan Luong-Long: Jake and Haley’s mother and Lao Shi’s dauther. The dragon powers skipped her generation.

Jonathan Long: Jake and Haley’s father. He is a normal human and he doesn’t know anything about the existence of magical creatures, including Jake and Haley’s dragon powers.

Rose/Huntsgirl: A popular girl that Jake has a crush on. Very early in the series it is revealed that she works for the main antagonists, the Huntsclan. Over time she develops feelings for Jake and eventually learns about his dragon identity. This leads her to change her ways and help Jake with stopping the Huntsclan.

Main antagonists:

The Huntsclan: A fanatic cult like human group who is always hunting magical creatures and becomes a bigger treat as the plot advances. In plenty of episodes, Jake and other dragons’s role is to protect the magical creatures from the Huntsclan  They are lead by the the Huntsman, who serves as master figure for Rose. The Dark Dragon: Not much is known about him except that he is a dragon that once turned evil centuries ago. He is a powerful dragon and his human identity is never revealed in the series. He appears less often than the Huntsclan but he is still a very dangerous adversary.

As you can see, the series has a big cast. This doesn’t mention all the secondary characters there are in the show, which often new get introduced every 2-3 episodes.

Most of the episodes focus in exploring or developing Jake in someway. Jake is a very flawed protagonist who usually can be selfish and act without thinking. In the first episodes he has the habit of abusing his dragon powers to ¨cheat¨ through life and this ends up getting him in trouble. His huge ego is a facade he uses to hide his insecurities, which he learns to overcome over time. Despite his attitude problems, he always tries helping magical creatures in need and really cares about his family and friends. He takes pride in being a magical protector, a role that is important to him.

He also has a very complicated relationship with Rose. At the start of the series he falls in love with her without knowing that she works for the Huntsclan. The same applies to Rose, with her not knowing that Jake is also his mortal enemy. Over time they learn each other’s secret identity and Rose decides to help Jake with stopping the Huntsclan. Their relationship is one of the things that is constanly changing in almost every episode when the plot is about them and its one of the best written parts of the show. Usually there is a problem with how animated shows potray teenage romance but with Jake and Rose’s case is executed very well. What’s more, it a good example of how to do enemies to lovers right and the complications that cause to the characters involved.

If there is one problem i have about their dynamic is that i wish Rose could have had episodes or more scenes exploring her character without Jake having to be in it. I think the series does a decent job at establishing that Rose has a life outside Jake. However, more scenes developing how she feels or her story would have helped her character overall. For example: An episode about how she was raised in the Huntsclan.

Moving on to the rest of the cast, i think the series does a good job a developing most of them. They get their own episodes and side plots showing different sides of their personality and lives. One thing i appreciate about the show is that it has episodes in which the main focus isn’t on Jake but other characters. This helps giving the show more variety and developing these characters. For instance: One of my favourite episodes from Season 1 "Keeping Shop" involves Trixie and Spud taking charge of Jake’s dragon duties while he and his grandfather are busy elsewhere. Fu takes the role of master here and teaches Trixie and Spud how to use dragon powers with a enchanted dragon disguise.

There are episodes that develop Jake’s relationship with his family too. Most of them are great and have sweet moments. Jake has a good chemistry with every member of his family and, because of this, an episode can have a different ¨feel¨ to it depending on the relationship that is being developed.

American Dragon has tons of secondary characters. Some are more memorable than others depending on their story and their evolution. Some are funny while others are more interesting. It’s quite impressive how the writers were able to introduce new every 2-3 episodes and still managed to make it work.

However, in spite of having all these positive things, there are some problems. For starters, not all characters get the same level of development. Trixie is one character i believe that it should have had more than one episode about her perspective. Maybe having to choose between a career she likes and her parents career. Or her romantic relationship with Kyle.

Jake has a few episodes of him learning lessons that he already learned more than one time. Part of this can be excused because it this is a show from the earlier 2000′s and continuity was harder to execute back in those days. The biggest offender of this is  "Game On", an episode that would fit well in Season 1 or early Season 2. Not near the end of the series when Jake has grown past this lesson.

On last point, some secondary characters feel that they have potential was never given proper time to be explored. For instance, Nigel Thrall is set up to be a foil and friendly rival to Jake in his debut episode...to barely do anything with him. I think this comes from the writers trying to put to major plot threads that were supposed to be in two seasons and not in one. This likely lead to some concepts to not be given proper continuation. 

These flaws can be a bit frustrating but they didn’t take my enjoyment out of the show. I think that as long as one keeps in mind that this is an old show and the problems it had during its production, it is fun to watch.

On lore and worldbuilding

I think one of the aspects that kept me enganged during my rewatch was how each episode would introduce some new element about the magical world and how it works. It’s actually intriguing. Every magical creature has its own powers, culture and society. This helped the series with not making it feel repetitive and always have something new to be interested in. I really like how the show team didn’t limit themselves to have two or three types of magical creatures and instead did a little bit of everything. It gives off the impression that the magical world is as big, if not bigger, than the human world. The series often uses dragon lore to represent certain themes such as the changes Jake goes through with his powers as a metaphor for puberty.

Gerenal animation and sound aspect.

For most part the animation looks solid. It’s nothing amazing but it works well for an action adventure show. Some action sequences are entertaining to watch. The characters have fun expressions.

(Jake and Lao’s dragon form designs in Season 2 art style) If there is one aspect American Dragon is controversial for is the the huge change in art direction in Season 2. Most of the characters got a new design, the art style changed to a angular simplified one. Some magical creatures looked like different species from the ones of Season 1. I personally prefer the art style of Season 1. It has a cartoonish vibes to it. It’s more pleasant to see and it fits better the tone of the show. I don’t dislike Season 2 style, in fact, i got used to it rather quickly. My main issue is that it feels more ¨stiff¨ and less expressive the Season 1 artstyle.

As for the voice cast, it’s pretty good. There are some well known voice actors here such as: Dante Basco ( Jake Long), John DiMaggio (Fu Dog), Mae Whitman (Rose). Although there are maybe some secondary characters that didn’t have the best choice and aren’t that good, the main cast does have solid voice actors to make up for that.

On the soundtrack, it is okay from what i heard. It improves in Season 2, probably because there is better direction in that season. They music has a bigger emotional impact to it than it had in the first season.

Representation stuff

I don’t feel like i’m the best to fully judge this aspect of the series. There are some things that haven’t aged well, being a series of 2000′s. There are some innapropiate jokes that wouldn’t be get a pass nowadays and a few writing choices in a few episodes that are rather... questionable.

Something i appreciate about the series is how Jake is mixed race ( chinese-european). His mother and grandfather are chinese and his sister is mixed race. His father is white/european. They all get their own episodes to get developed. There some episodes that explore Jake’s chinese part of the family such as when he visits them in  "Feeding Frenzy" or when Lao teaches Jake about their culture.

One of my favourite episodes.  "Year of the Jake", is about Jake learning to be more involved with his chinese heritage and see to the value in it when he makes the mistake of cleaning the ¨good luck¨ out of his granfather’s shop. The episode takes place during Chinese New Year inuniverse. There are some scenes of the rest of Jake’s family participating in the parade, which is pretty cool.

The female characters in this show are able to stand on their own ground and are treated as their own person. I like the writing choice of not making Trixie Jake’s girlfriend and instead Jake having a crush in other characters. (Mainly Rose). I do wish that Rose had a few episodes about her without Jake having to be in it. Maybe some interactions with Trixie or Hayley, for example. I like her character but i feel like she could have had more screen time for her own.

About the episode order

In a minor note, American Dragon had its episodes airing out of order for some reason. This lead to errors in continuity if they are not watched in the proper order. Things that should have happened took place later, episodes that were supposed to take place before an specific plot point aired later.

Luckily some fans have found the correct watching order, which was very useful for me during my rewatch. This changes quite a lot the pacing of the series too. If any of you ever considers watching this series, i highly suggest using the episode guide to avoid continuity errors and confusion.

In conclusion

American Dragon: Jake Long is a fun series that has aged quite well despite all the years that have passed since it finished airing. It has good charcater arcs, interesting worldbuilding and solid story arcs. It’s capable of having emotional and dark moments without fully loosing the tone that was previously established.

While Season 1 is more episodic, i recommend watching all the episodes for the characters dynamics and development that becomes important in Season 2. Season 2 improves a lot in writing and direction. Most of the episodes are worth of watching since they add things to the characters or the overall story. 

After finishing my rewatch, i think it has become one of my favourites Disney shows from that era. It’s not perfect, but it still manages to be an entertaining show.

[comic & movie review] all-star superman

“the work doesn’t stop just because i’m dying.”

again, i saw the movie before i read the comic.

i never quite knew what to make of jimmy’s cross-dressing in the movie. like, my gut reaction was that it was a positive/neutral portrayal, but i just didn’t trust it? like, it was hard to imagine d.c. having someone just casually be genderfluid and not making a big deal of patting themselves on the back for it? but having now read the comic where it’s portrayed exactly the same way, and knowing now that grant morrison is nonbinary, it makes a lot more sense that it was so positive and chill.

i do have some complaints. most of them are for the movie specifically, but one that crosses over to both is that the entire premise of superman overdosing on sunlight just seems completely ridiculous to me? but i guess that’s ultimately a matter of personal taste? and, again, now that i know this was written by a queer person it does make hella sense that they wanted to tell a story where superman knew he was dying of a terminal illness, and was running out of time to accomplish everything he wanted to accomplish.

as previously alluded to, i have additional complaints about the movie specifically. and these are much less a matter of personal taste. not telling his mother he’s dying is reprehensible, for instance. but nothing is as egregious as the additional details added in the movie’s expansion of the prison riot scene.

in both the comic and movie, superman visits lex luthor in prison as clark kent to interview him. in the comic, he saves his life several times when a full-blown prison riot breaks out. he also rescues all of the guards. and he lets basically all the prisoners except lex die.

what good is a “hero” who defends the blunt instruments of our oppression at the expense of their most immediate victims? of course, this is consistent with kal-el’s paradoxical commitment to “truth, justice, and the american way.” how he can even begin to think he can square the former two with the latter is anyone’s guess.

to be fair, there are also actually a couple things i like better about the movie!

a few of the adventures from the comic had to be trimmed down, but i actually think that worked in the movie’s favor at times? the movie deleted the bizarro world stuff entirely, and while i didn’t mind it exactly, the movie doesn’t really suffer from its absence. but that means the movie needed a different reason for superman to be absent from earth when bar-el and lilo show up. they solved this by having superman embark on a long, interstellar journey to find a suitable planet to release the bottle city of kandor on instead of just anticlimactically plopping it on mars. this streamlines the narrative and keeps things more on theme, so i think it worked super well.

this scene also streamlines the process of lois finding out that he’s dying. instead of her finding out from someone else and being mad that he didn’t tell her, he volunteers the information before heading out on his interstellar journey. it’s a pretty moving scene, and it also includes the line i opened this review with which is a line i really missed in the comic.

what i love about both the movie and the comic are their willingness to be dorky. and how episodic they are. and most importantly, the big question at their core.

how does a god deal with the news of his impending death?

i don’t want to die, nor do i particularly want to grow old. i have never felt particularly sympathetic to the argument that life’s brevity is what gives it meaning. i don’t have enough time in the day, in the week, in the month, in the year, in the decade, in my entire godsdamned life to get my fill of holding my partners close, of learning new things, of bettering myself. i could live a thousand years and never get enough of any of these things. i don’t want the curtain to come down. it isn’t the end that gives meaning. it’s the end that takes that meaning away. and i will never be ready.

the writer of the movie adaptation died a few days before it was released, you know. he was 49. what kind of cruel joke is that.

so what the fuck does a god do when he finds out he’s dying? that his functionally immortal life has been cut shorter than the average human’s. that a fucking god is going to die young.

the stereotypical superman problem is that he’s too powerful, too invincible, too hard to relate to. that’s always been bullshit because his vulnerability has always been the entirely too squishy humans around him that he cares about so much. i heard about a superman game where instead of having a health gage for yourself, you have one for the city of metropolis, and even though the game was apparently not that great that concept is just fucking perfect.

but what this story does is take the ultimate vulnerability, the news of his own impending death... and instead of using it to humanize him, he becomes even more intensely himself. he tries to finish as much of his work as he can, work that only he can do. work that makes him as remote from us as he can possibly be.

i mean, fuck, his last act as his body is starting to convert to pure, brilliant energy (he doesn’t even die like the rest of us) is flying to the fucking sun to fix it by becoming one with it, easily his most herculean feat yet.

a god doesn’t become one of us just because he takes on our most defining vulnerability. the work doesn’t stop just because he’s dying.

Wilder Minds by Mumford & Sons

Much like how “In Case I Make It” by Will Wood and DEATH OF PEACE AND MIND by Bad Omens, Wilder Mind takes a big jump from Mumford & Sons usual style of country/folk rock for more electronic pop rock. Where Will Wood and Bad Omens excel with the style change, Mumford & Sons doesn’t quite nail it. The songs sound good, yes, but they don’t quite have the same emotional impact as their previous albums. It may have to be another one of those albums I have to listen to again to give it another chance. 6/10

(Also retconning and making “Lies for the Liars” by The Used a 4/10, I liked like 4 songs from that album)

Lilo & Stitch

After not having watched it for so long I finally decided to actually watch this movie from the forgotten era. The movie was cute to say the least! Some parts were charming and hilarious (I think Jumba, Pleakly, and Bubbles had the best writing in the whole movie). What kinda irked me about it though was the tonal whiplash. There were parts that would be heavily comedic slapstick and followed up with very depressing moments (not the extreme degree of tonal whiplash that Hunchback of Notre Dame had). Still, it’s a cute movie with a good message about sticking together as a family. 7/10, have mercy on my soul

Nightmare Kart

To preface this: I have not played Bloodborne ever, I caught glimpses of this game after seeing the reveal trailer of Micolash, seeing some wild idiot with a caged head running, and thought “Oh this is a FUNNY game”

Well fast forward and (after legal issues with Sony from what it seems), I have finally played the now Nightmare Kart, and I must say it is a delight!

The story is very befitting for a gothic horror kart race that takes place in a nightmare. The change in designs to be legally distinct from Bloodborne (Nicholas having a little bird in his bird cage is incredible). Gameplay is very solid and fun, using the echos(?) system from Bloodborne as a way to increase max speed. The campaign is also quite fun (apart from the capture the insight mission but I think that’s just me being mad cuz bad). The music is also incredible with my fave song being either Angel Graveyard or Miralodia College.

9/10 game, fave new game I played this year so far!

Quickly giving him a polite wave as you scurried across the field. Cursing under your breath reminding yourself of why you should've taken a golf cart. Your legs simply wouldn’t be quick enough to run away from the man.

You managed to get on to the next hole without having him following you. Having carried on your game, forgetting the brief encounter with Ransom as you butchered your way across the course. 

Having reached the putting green, calculated your next move. Crouched down behind the ball with your putter in hand you took a note of how to hole the ball. 

“Hello tee, missed seeing you around.” You jumped at the scare of his voice. Your back straightened at the tensity of his greeting, refusing to look back at the man. “You’re going to pretend we’re strangers when I was kind enough to help you out last time you butchered the course.”

“Fuck off Ransom.”

“That’s not very polite to greet someone who’s being nice and returning your expensive golf ball, now is it?”

It made you look over your shoulder, watching him smirk as if he knew that would give him a reaction. Holding up your neon-colored ball he wiggled it between his fingers. 

You reached forward to grab it, but he held it up above his head. 

“Keep it.” You huffed, turning back and taking a few steps towards your aligned ball. 

“Draw the claws back kitten, because I’m not here to please your pussy. I’m genuinely just here to give you your ball back. The ball almost smashed my head. Remember?”

You prepared the coffee piston, pushing down the coffee tamper on the freshly ground coffee. Placing the piston in place, you pressed the start button. Adding a piece of white biscoff flavoured chocolate, watching it melt as the coffee started pouring. As you waited you took a bite of the chocolate. It wasn’t as amazing as Ransom claimed it to be, but at least it reminded you of him.

When the cup was filled with the finest coffee, ruined by the chocolate inside, you grabbed a new pack of cookies and headed for the floating stairs. With each step the huffed groans of frustration became clearer. The aggressive tap of fingers hitting the keyboard almost made you giggle.

As soon as you peaked through the partially cracked open door, your heart ached. Ransom looked distraught and beyond frustrated. His hair all messed up, looking like he plucked it and ran his hand through the strands on numerous occasions.

“Are you going to keep staring?” He scoffed, aware of you standing outside his office.

“Can I interest you in a coffee and cookie break?” You asked, watching his eyes light up and lifting his head to meet your presence.

You walked towards him, placing the mug beside him. A silent question directed at him as your eyes glanced between him and the desk. He pushed off the edge, creating minimal space for you to slide in between.

You’d been warned about your neighbour, Curtis Everett. You’d never imagined him becoming a friend the day you moved in next door. Friends, that is how it all started for you. You became companions over time, almost inseparable. Starting with regular movie nights, after you had mentioned never having seen Goodfellas. 

 He’d always vocalised his interest, his pure and honest emotions were something you could appreciate. They always felt so raw and he always seemed so sure of them. 

Here you were about to knock on his door for yet another movie night. One of your favourites and over time it became a weekly tradition. You were surprised to find the door unlocked and you stepped inside.

 “Curtis?” You called out, closing the door behind you.

 “Kitchen.” He yelled back. “Fuck. Shit!” You giggled, hearing metal fall to the floor followed by a string of swear words. You couldn’t help but snort out a laugh when you turned the corner, walking into his open layout kitchen. You unlocked your phone and took a picture of the complete mess you found Curtis in.

 “Call the newspaper, because Mr Everett finally figured out how to use his stove instead of ordering in.”

 “Oh shut it, Duchess.” He huffed, making you smile at the nickname he’d given you since the day you moved in. 

 “Need a hand?”

 “Nope. I need you to sit your pretty little ass down.”

 “Pretty little ass huh? Have you been checking it out?”

 “It’s no secret I have.” You noticed the uneasy shift in his body posture. “Please, pour yourself a glass of wine.”

 “I can certainly do that.” You spoke, reaching for the rack holding the wine glasses. Pulling two out and pouring you both a glass of red. “Are you sure you don’t need a hand?”

 “Positive. Please, sit down and let me struggle on my own, thank you.” 

 Laughing at his frustrated remark you took the filled glasses into the living room. Settling yourself on the large couch that always felt like a nice soft marshmallow mattress to doze off on.

 “So what are we watching tonight?” You asked.

 “Thought I might let you beat me at monopoly again.”

 “SERIOUSLY?” You chirped, shooting up from your position. Looking back at him.

 “Yes, seriously.” 

 “Hurry up, I’m excited to see you sulk and pout for the rest of the night.”

With your head buzzing from the alcohol you wandered the streets of the German city of Hamburg. Suzanne had taken you out to dinner after you had curated and assessed the possessed paintings of LaurentGroup. Forging the documents and making sure everything was in order for shipment elsewhere. 

You had learned quickly not to ask questions but would not complain about the perks and the pay. Little had you known you’d end up locked and chained in a dark room. Writhing on a mattress, as the metal shackles around your ankles would rattle. 

You greeted the doorman of the hotel and gave the receptionist a wave as you made your way toward the bar. A nightcap wouldn’t hurt anyone, but your own head in the morning. 

“The usual Miss Sunshine?” The bartender asked and placed a few sweet olives and assorted nuts on the bar. 

Nodding your confirmation as you took a seat on the barstool. Taking a few nuts between your fingers, smiling at the given nickname and it probably all was due to your yellow accented dress. The hotel was part of LaurentGroup and Suzette always ensured you were taken care of for every visit.

Looking over your shoulder you observed the thinned-out crowd. Two men still conversing in a pair of seats. You made eye contact with one of them, returning your gaze with a lopsided smirk. There was something entrancing about his presence. Darkness beckoned surrounded by charisma. His moustache and hair were groomed to perfection not a single hair out of place. 

It hadn’t been long until the man had introduced himself. Lloyd Hansen introduced himself as a freelance legal entrepreneur for LaurentGroup. A common ground since both of you indirectly worked for the company. Accepting another drink since the conversation seemed to flow nicely with no worries on your mind.

I was gifted the Disney Doorables Tag Along after being on the fence about it. I was a little afraid when I opened it and saw star pieces (that are inside the water!) sticking to the back of the head! 

But I don’t think its leaking. Anything with water and plastic I just don’t trust long term.  I know the water won’t last so instead of putting it away on a shelf I’ll be trying it out as a keychain on my purse.  Little experiment to see how it holds up. 

Its much cuter then I thought out of the box, they even did Stitch’s back markings too! Love the detail and the chibi style.  I dont dig the blue plastic leash looking thing ontop of it. I mourn the lack of METAL keychains nowadays.

 BUT I got two tiny Lilo charms along with it and I 😍 them.

Remember it does say ‘mystery’ charms! But its always going to be Lilo 👍

2017 fic roundup!

I honestly hadn’t realized I had written so much fic this year. I ought to post the longest among them to ao3, please feel free to nag me about that. I hadn’t set myself any goals, but I’m happy to see that while my love for Lilo still goes strong, I seem to have made a habit of writing niche het pairings, which doesn’t make me popular but is always lovely to work on. Here’s to another year and (hopefully) even more fic. I have about 20 WIPs begging for my attention, so let’s try and make this year the year I actually finish what I’ve started. :p
