Thoughts on Sonic 3!
On December 10th, 2018, I was on the last day of a trip to Milwaukee. The night before, I'd attended the wedding of one of my best friends, Jake, who I've known since high school. Even though half of us were sick the whole trip, it was a great time. Derek had asked the wedding DJ to play "One Week" as the first request of the night, and proceeded to lip sync the entire song on the dance floor. On that cold winter morning in a hotel room hundreds of miles from home, Derek and I groggily checked Twitter on our phones and saw the shocking news: Paramount had teased the design for Sonic from their upcoming live action film. Even in silhouette, the shape of his face and the realistic curvature of his limbs made him look like a grotesque little homunculus. This movie was going to suck.
Six years later, I've now seen the third entry in what's become a hugely successful Sonic film franchise. It features Keanu Reeves as the voice of Shadow the Hedgehog in a fairly faithful adaptation of his story from Sonic Adventure 2. At the time of writing, it currently sits at a whopping 86% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, vying for the title of the best-reviewed theatrically released video game movie of all time. Critics are saying nice things about the emotional journey of Shadow the Hedgehog. Never in a million years did I think I'd see this day.
I, too, have now seen this movie, and... yeah, it's pretty good.
I'm gonna get deep into spoilers here, so I'll just say up front that I liked the movie. It feels like just about the best possible execution of this version of Sonic. But that's also damning it with faint praise, depending on who you ask.
If you're a fan of the games who didn't like the second movie, you probably won't get much out of this one, either, unless you just really love Shadow so much that nothing else in the movie matters to you. It doesn't reinvent the wheel for this film series. It's still got a heaping helping of broad comedy, cheap pop culture references, bad one-liners, and characterization that diverges greatly from the source material. This is not high art, nor is it a direct adaptation of Sonic Adventure 2. If you're the kind of person who hates this portrayal of Sonic and Eggman, or a lore nerd who'll hate that they let Shadow do Chaos Control without an Emerald, then just don't bother with this.
On the other hand, if you did enjoy the last movie, then you'll probably have a fun time here, too. Shadow is very cool. The action is the best it's ever been. There's a bit more focus on characters from the games, and less on human characters invented for the moviesâwith the exception of Agent Stone, who's in this a lot because everyone likes him. There's a lot of SA2 fanservice. They even play "Live and Learn." It's a fun time! Be sure to stick around through the end credits.
And now, to dig deeper, let's get into the spoilers! I'm gonna jump around a lot and talk about different aspects of the movie, spoiling everything along the way.
Shadow and his reams of lore
Here's the main thing you came for: Shadow is great in this! They really did him justice. Keanu Reeves is extremely solid in the role. He can be a bit flat as an actor sometimes, but I think he did well here. He can be tough and menacing, but he can also be earnest and emotionally vulnerable. Good casting call. Excited at the prospect of seeing more of him in the future.
Really, as a Sonic Lore Nerd I'm most interested in discussing the changes they made to Shadow's backstory. I'm sure there will be many fans upset with the changes, but for the sake of streamlining a complicated backstory that was subject to a bunch of retcons and multiple layers of amnesia and fitting it into a 110-minute movie, I think they generally made smart choices.
For one, Gerald didn't create Shadow using Black Arms DNA, because Gerald didn't create Shadow at all! Instead, Shadow arrived on Earth inside a meteor, and Gerald was merely the prominent GUN scientist who studied him after he was captured. (That meteor does have very strong Black Arms vibes, though, so I wouldn't rule out the possibility of them exploring that stuff in the future.) This simplifies things a lot and allows Shadow to be a direct foil for Sonic, kind of a version of our hero who was treated as a lab rat and lost the only human he considered family instead of finding happiness like Sonic has. Then later Shadow hurts Tom and Sonic wants revenge, and it mirrors Shadow's feelings about Maria, and after they fight they can empathize with each other over this, Shadow sees the error of his ways and helps save the world, yada yada yada. You get it. People predicted 95% of this movie's plot from the trailers, but it's effective.
Likewise, all of the stuff about creating Shadow as the ultimate life form who's immune to all disease to cure Maria's illness is completely cut out. Shadow's still called the ultimate life form, but he's treated as more of an energy source than a genetic research project here, playing off of the stuff about Eggman wanting to harness Sonic's natural Chaos Energy in the movies. The original intent behind the ultimate life form project was always hard to explain in the games and doesn't even come up that much, so I don't blame them for cutting it.
Because Gerald isn't doing genetic experiments and creating artificial life, the Biolizard also doesn't exist. It does, however, appear in an old monster movie Shadow and Maria watch in a montage, with Shadow later commenting that he worries he's a monster like the one he saw in the movie. That's a clever way to include it, I think.
The ARK sort of exists. There was no space colony back in the '70s, all of the events of Shadow's flashbacks just took place at a secret GUN base on Earth. Fair enough for a version of the story ostensibly set in the real world. The big space laser in the third act of the film is obviously supposed to evoke the ARK, but it's referred to as simply the Eclipse Cannon. It's still not a full-blown space colony, just a weapon of mass destruction Gerald designed for GUN in exchange for his release (while also secretly planning to use it to blow up the planet in an act of revenge). I am, however, pleased to report that the Eclipse Cannon still has a giant Eggman face on it.
And as for Maria: I like her in this! She's obviously not going to get a ton of screentime, and she's always going to be a very straightforward character, but she's more playful and lively here. She teases Shadow for being grumpy and plays with him a lot. She feels less like this perfect embodiment of everything good and pure in the world and more like an actual kid. She's still not a complex character, but it works.
And the most important question: do they show a child getting shot and killed by the military? The answer is almost. In the flashback, GUN soldiers chase Maria, Shadow, and Gerald and ready their guns, but the young Commander Walters (who's in his 20s rather than being a kid) grabs them and tries to stop them from firing on a child. In the chaos, a soldier fires, missing Maria but hitting a generator that then blows up and kills Maria. So, y'know, close enough I suppose.
So, yes, many of the details change here, but they captured the gist of Shadow's story from SA2. The emotional core is there. I will say, though, I almost feel like Shadow isn't in this movie as much as I thought he'd be? I think he's used effectively in all of his scenes, and they make room for his backstory, and BOY does he get to kick ass in his fights, but for much of the middle part of the movie he's overshadowed by Ivo and Gerald. Though this might be a compromise to leave more screentime for...
Tails and Knuckles
I'm relieved to report that Tails and Knuckles both get a good amount of cool stuff to do in this! They don't feel like an afterthought.
I was worried that Tails in particular would completely fall by the wayside, since even his debut movie didn't entirely know what to do with him. But he's good here. He pretty much just feels like the Tails from the games at this point, especially since they dropped that fawning admiration he had for Sonic with that running gag of him going "Only Sonic the Hedgehog could do that!" He often chimes in as the one who wants Team Sonic to stick together when Sonic and Knuckles bicker. He particularly gets to shine in the Mission Impossible-inspired heist sequence at the GUN headquarters in London that serves as the climax of the second act, which feels like it was tailor made to let him shine as the tech guy of the team. He also gets several opportunities to swoop in and catch someone for a save in an action scene. He's good in this!
Knuckles is... fine. He's definitely fallen into the role of the comic relief dumb bruiser since joining the good guys, but he's at least a little better than he was in his own streaming show. The jokes lean more into him just being really brash about his strength and skill, rather than him being this archaic warrior who doesn't understand anything about the modern world. He also gets a few more serious bits in the back third of the movie where he gets to shine a little more, so overall it evens out to him being fine. They could've done way worse.
As for the relevance of the Knuckles show: Knuckles is now said to be the guardian of the Master Emerald, like in the games, though with no Angel Island this amounts to him hiding it somewhere for safekeeping. It's eventually revealed that he just gave it to Wade, who gets exactly one scene (sorry, Wade-heads) for a joke about him using the Master Emerald as a hockey puck. So, the miniseries explained why Knuckles has a connection with Wade. That's it! Also I think Knuckles might use the Flames of Disaster a bit in fights, but they never called the technique out by name, so I never really thought about it. So, yeah, the six-episode streaming miniseries about Wade bowling has zero meaningful relevance to the Shadow movie. Who could have seen this coming?
Miscellaneous humans
For that matter, the human supporting cast is MASSIVELY downplayed in this one. Tom and Maddie are there for two key sequences (the beginning of the movie and the GUN HQ heist), but otherwise they disappear for long stretches of the movie. They don't go to Japan in act I, nor do they go to space in act III, and there's no subplot for them during those periods, either. There's nothing like the wedding subplot in Sonic 2 where they'd constantly cut back to Hawaii for comic relief with the humans and only reveal why this was relevant to the plot near the end. (There's also no random dance battle in Siberia.) If a human character is here, it's because they have something to contribute to the plot right away. Most people will probably consider this an improvement, and I'd certainly say it makes for a much tighter script, though I have to remind everyone that I thought the wedding being a GUN sting operation was such a funny twist that I'm a defender of the Hawaii subplot.
On the subject of Tom, something funny I've noticed is that they've just completely downplayed the fact that Tom and Wade are cops. Tom being a cop never comes up once. Wade being a cop only gets referenced via the fact that he's practicing hockey on the roof of the police station in his one scene, but he's not in uniform or anything. They clearly got the memo that we don't want Sonic to hang out with cops.
Here's something else funny: Rachel and Randall got character posters, but they're actually not in the movie! Not technically, anyway. During the heist sequence at GUN HQ, Tom and Maddie use some gadgets Tails invented to holographically disguise themselves as those other characters. But the real Rachel and Randall never show up in the flesh. It's a very odd way to shoehorn the actors into the movie. (Jojo is also absent. They did not give her Amy's role of being the girl who reminds Shadow of Maria. Instead they just let Sonic have the big heart to heart with Shadow that makes him switch sides.)
You know who IS in this movie? Krysten Ritter. Not as the voice of Rouge, as the fandom once hoped, but as a director for GUN. She gets like three scenes and she feels completely checked out the whole time. Can't say I blame her! She's not really a character, just a plot necessity. Commander Walters dies in Japan but gives Sonic one of two keycards needed to activate the Eclipse Cannon, and then Ritter's character assumes Sonic stole it and labels him a bad guy. So that's why they have to break into GUN HQ in the second act instead of just talking things out with them. Still, I am at least relieved that Sonic doesn't work with GUN for most of the movie.
I gotta be honest: when Walters pulled a credit card-shaped object out of his pocket, I thought he was about to give Sonic another Olive Garden gift card as his final act before dying. Part of me wishes that happened.
The supporting human character in this who really gets to shine is Agent Stone, which I'm sure most fans will agree was the correct choice. There's a LOT of Agent Stone in this. He's good. I don't have much to say about him, but he's fun as usual.
But, of course, the ones who steal the show are Jim Carrey, and his costar Jim Carrey.
The Robotniks
I've gone back and forth on whether or not I can actually see movie Robotnik as Robotnik. I think with this third and final entry in the Jim Carrey Robotnik Trilogy, I've landed on... yeah, that's just Jim Carrey playing a Jim Carrey character. He's absolutely having fun with the role, and I enjoyed watching him, but I think a lot of that comes down to the fact that I'm a millennial who grew up watching Jim Carrey movies. If you didn't like him before, this movie will probably be nails on a chalkboard to you, because now there are two of him.
Ivo's arc here leans very heavily into the fact that he grew up as an orphan and never knew his family, a thing offhandedly mentioned in the first movie that's never been a thing for any other version of the character. Here, he learns that he has a living grandfather who's also a mad scientist, and it feels like a hole in his heart has been filled. It certainly makes sense for a place to take this version of the character, and it fits with the movie's themes of finding and losing family, but the cartoonish, childlike affection Ivo feels towards Gerald and all the scenes of them frolicking and dancing together have basically nothing to do with the characters from the games. He's a fun villain for this movie, but he's overwhelmingly used as comic relief this time rather than as a serious threat. He doesn't particularly feel like Sega's Dr. Ivo Robotnik, the arch nemesis of Sonic the Hedgehog who'd take over the world with an army of robots and a fleet of airships in the span of a day if Sonic wasn't around to stop him. He's a guy who lives in a big crab robot and has some drones. He has more in common with Carrey's depictions of the Grinch or the Riddler or Count Olaf than Dr. Eggman. Though he does, at least, finally get his outfit from the games by the end of the movie. So that's something. And also he's in a fat suit now. They only make jokes at the expense of his weight a little. Hooray...?
Gerald, meanwhile, is... largely the same character as movie Eggman, but older, so they can make jokes about him having saggy flesh and smelling funny and needing dentures. (Also, his voice kind of sounds like Homer Simpson sometimes?) To his credit, Carrey absolutely nails the handful of more serious scenes Gerald gets, whether it's Maria's death or his sinister turn when he reveals that he actually wants to destroy the Earth. But then it's right back to goofs about there being two of the same guy. Even the final battle features a lot of slapstick shenanigans with the two Robotniks fighting each other. I was able to enjoy the absurdity of it all, but if the humor doesn't land for you the dual Jim Carrey schtick is a hell of a lot of the movie. I wouldn't be surprised if there was more Gerald than Shadow in the movie, when you go and tally up their screentime. I was able to enjoy the sheer absurdity of it, but your mileage will vary.
I will, however, say that the split screen stuff they do with the two Carreys is EXTREMELY impressive, from a filmmaking perspective. They were absolutely flexing with their ability to pull the effect off. They don't rely on cheap tricks like cutting a lot, or having shot/reverse shot scenes where you're looking at the back of a body double's head. Instead they have a lot of long takes where the two Robotniks are talking to each other, you can see both of their faces, and they'll even hug and touch each other a lot, and the whole time the conversation maintains a natural pace like it really is two actors playing off of each other. It's really well done. It's an incredibly silly idea, but boy did they commit to it.
Sonic
I've hardly said anything about Sonic himself in all of this. It's his movie, isn't it! Well... I don't know, he's fine.
I feel like movie Sonic is a known quantity at this point, and either you like this take on the character or you don't. There was some speculation early on that this was supposed to be a younger Sonic who would grow into being the character we know from the games and comics, the one who's still got lots of quips but is also kind of aloof and cool, a free spirit who goes where the wind takes him, a figure the other characters look up to. And... no, that didn't happen. Once again he gets more serious as the stakes are raised, and he's totally badass when he goes Super, but the rest of the time he's still a little goober with tons of generic one-liners who learns schmaltzy lessons about the importance of family. He's still constantly going to undercut the tension of most scenes by cracking a pop culture reference that will make the average American parent go "haha I've heard of that." I don't think they're ever gonna change that. I think this just what the writers think Sonic is like.
And, again, for what it is, it's fine. He's a little annoying. You already know how you feel about movie Sonic. This third entry won't change that. But they do, at least, have him say "Talk about low budget flights, no food or movies... I'm outta here!" before jumping out of a helicopter. As my thoughts on the climax will show, I am not immune to fanservice.
The climax
God, the climax is SOOOOO fucking good. It's fantastic. Easily the best action these movies have ever done.
Rather than saving Super Shadow for the team-up with Sonic at the end, they have both of them go Super to fight each other first, and they just go full DBZ with it, fighting across the entire planet. It absolutely rules. I think this is the new coolest fight the two of them have had in anything ever. And then they have to stop the Eclipse Cannon together, and sure, there's no Biolizard. But Gerald DOES release a swarm of GUN Hunter robots, and the ensuing space battle turns into some Gundam shit. It's good! It's so good!!! The movie's flaws kind of melt away for me here when I'm watching Super Shadow take out an army of robots with Chaos Spears on the big screen. What a timeline we're living in.
And yes, they play "Live and Learn." They had to. They knew the assignment. They actually play a slight remix, but it's still got the original vocals, so it's perfectly recognizable. Actually, the tune of the song is used as a leitmotif for Shadow throughout the movie, first introduced via an acoustic guitar version played by Maria, and I really love that. I've been begging these movies to use more music from the games the whole time, and I'm glad they finally did so here. (They also use the traditional level clear jingle early in the film, and Eggman's theme from SA2 is very briefly used as a ringtone.)
... Anyway, uh, meanwhile Eggman, Tails, and Knuckles straight up just kill Gerald to save the world? They unceremoniously knock him into an energy field at the end of their slapstick fight aboard the Eclipse Cannon and he disintegrates like he hit a bugzapper. It's over in an instant. It's not graphic or anything, but it's, like... I didn't expect them to show it, or for it to be such a casual murder! Eggman has one quip about it and then immediately moves on.
Shortly after this, Eggman and Shadow sacrifice themselves to stop the Eclipse Cannon. Shadow's sacrifice doesn't stick, obviously (he's revealed to be alive by the end of the second stingerâpretend to be shocked), but Eggman's probably dead dead. I seriously doubt Jim Carrey's gonna come out of retirement for these movies again. His final moments before the big explosion are also SO dragged out and belabored. He has a dramatic final line like ten times in a row. It really just feels like the series saying goodbye to Carrey. And, again, it feels like a fitting enough end for this Eggman's arc, but it's an odd adaptation of the character from the games.
And so, that's what we're left with. This is far from Sonic Adventure 2: The Movie. It's not that, though there are many, many references made to that game in particular. It's a sequel to the film Sonic the Hedgehog 2 that has a similar tone and style, but Shadow and Gerald are in it, and Shadow gets some really cool fights, and there's a liiiiiittle more focus on stuff from the games than last time, and the script's a little tighter. If that sounds fun to you, you will have fun with this. I know I did. If it doesn't, you're probably better off waiting for them to inevitably do an animated reboot whenever this live action series runs out of steam.
It hasn't quite run out of steam yet, though...
The post-credits scenes, and the future
One of the big questions going into this was: what's next? How do they top a Shadow movie with heavy Sonic Adventure 2 overtones, in terms of hype for the fans? How do you fill Eggman's shoes after Carrey retires, for real this time? There are still more fan favorite rival characters to get through, but how many movies in a row can they introduce a furry foe for Sonic who inevitably turns good and helps him stop a larger threat by the end? And when the hell are we gonna see the girls?
Well, we now have our answer, and it's one I'm cautiously excited for: a whole army of Metal Sonics, and Amy!
Yes, Amy! Finally!! It's an absolute crime that we've gone three whole movies and a streaming miniseries without including the female lead of the series. I've complained about this ad nauseum (and also the fact that they cut Rouge from the story). But at least now they're finally doing something about it.
But now the question is, how will they characterize Amy? Sega's struggled with her for years, and there's a million different directions you can take her. Her one scene here has her smashing a bunch of Metal Sonics and wearing a cloak for the sake of a dramatic reveal, which gives her the vibes of a mysterious, badass action girl. This is, of course, completely different from how Sonic and Amy met in the games. What will her personality be like? She doesn't speak here, so who will they get to play her? Where did she come from? Will she even have a crush on Sonic? All of these have yet to be determined. So, like, I'm hyped to finally see Amy, a character who should've been in the movies from the start, but they could so easily end up playing it safe with an incredibly boring girlboss version of Amy who's no fun at all. We'll have to wait and see.
(My prediction: they're going to try to cast either Zendaya or Ariana as Amy.)
Metal Sonic, likewise, is very exciting, and he looks perfect. He looks just like the design from the games. But the question is: what will they do with this army of Metals? Will they be lead by one main Metal Sonic, perhaps Neo Metal Sonic, who gets to be a proper bad guy? Will they take some cues from Sonic CD, Heroes, and the OVA, or do something completely original? Where did they come from? Were they activated as a failsafe after Eggman died? Did they and Amy come from some sort of bad future, riffing on Sonic CD's time travel? Will they explore the fact that Metal wants to be the one and only Sonic? Or will they just be an army of disposable robot grunts for Sonic and friends to mow down like it's a Dynasty Warriors game, while some other villain takes center stage?
It could go so many different ways, and some prospects are more exciting than others. I mean, the Knuckles show had endless possibilities for what it could do with him, and none of the options on my bingo card were "Pachacamac's ghost tells him to help Wade win a bowling tournament." And while I'm a sicko who thinks it's funny that the Knuckles show is what it is, forgive me for keeping my hype about Amy and Metal Sonic in check here until we learn more.
Regardless of what they do, it'll still be hard to top the hype of Shadow, and it'll be hard to fill Jim Carrey's shoes for general audiences. So despite this clear statement of intent, I have no idea what the future of this film franchise holds. But regardless of what they do, I can say one thing for certain: the kids in my theater were hyped as hell for it. They popped off over Metal Sonic, and they were screaming their heads off with excitement over Amy. I heard a teenage girl on the opposite end of my row of seats say "finally!" over Amy's reveal, verbalizing my exact thoughts. She also said that this movie was "peak," though it diverged from the games, and she hoped they'd do a movie with Silver and Blaze someday.
The kids are gonna be okay.

A Car For Christmas

Summary: Dean doesn't seem to want to be there for Christmas, but it seems that it was quite the opposite
Word Count: 984
A/N: Merry Christmas and Merry Holydays, everyone! This is my @spnfanficpond Secret Santa gift for @spnbabe67! I hope you like it and let me know!
Tags/Warnings: 18+, smut, angst, sex in a car, Christmas is here, established relationship
âI just donât understand why you donât want to celebrate Christmas. Youâve always wanted to.â
âWe have a hunt, Iâve told you.â He said as he packed his things into his bag.
âI know, but⊠Dean,â You held his arm. âItâs ChristmasâŠâ
He sighed and turned to look at you.
âIâm sorry, sweetheart.â
You shook your head.
âNo, youâre not.â
He frowned and turned his body towards you.
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
âWhat you heard. It seems like youâd rather hunt a creature that any other lone hunter could than spend Christmas with your brother and me.â
He stared at you and you noticed his jaw tense.
âThatâs not true.â He murmured.
âThen prove it.â You looked at him pleadingly in the eyes. âStay.â
He sighed and shook his head. He wasnât going to stay.
âIâm sorry, really.â
He walked past you, leaving a kiss on your head before leaving.
A week had already passed, today was Christmas, and you were alone in the bunker. The tree you had decorated with the boys seemed dull, lifeless from the absence of the place.
You had been stirring the coffee in front of you for about twenty minutes. The energy you had been saving for this day was nowhere to be found. But a noise made you raise your head.
Maybe it had just been a normal noise in a bunker that was years old, but you got up anyway and followed the noise.
âDamn⊠Thing...â You heard a growl coming from the room you shared with Dean.
You peeked through the door and looked in confusion at the back of a man as he fixed something on the bed.
âDean?â
He turned around in surprise and ran a hand through his hair.
âHey, sweetheart.â
You raised an eyebrow and tried to look behind him.
âWhat are you doing here? And the hunt?â You asked as you walked towards him.
But he stood in your way, his hands on your arms.
âWell, you said it yourself, sweetheart. Itâs Christmas.â
âWhatâs that back there?â You tried to look behind his shoulder again.
âHey, hey.â He laughed nervously. âItâs nothing. Why donât you go to the library for a while?â
âWhatâs that back there?â You repeated.
âNothing, nothing.â
Dean tried to move you back, but you managed to get out of his grip and walk past him, seeing what was behind him.
It was a half wrapped box.
You heard him sigh behind you.
âIt was supposed to be your Christmas present. But I realized Iâm really bad at wrapping these things.â
You turned to look at him slowly, a smile making its way onto your face. Suddenly, you jumped on him, Dean immediately holding you up as you placed kisses all over his face.
âWhoa, hey, hey!â He looked surprised. âYou havenât even opened your present yet.â
You got off of him as you laughed.
âOkay, okay.â You said as you turned around and began to open the box.
When you opened it, you noticed a video tape. You took it and read what was written on it. The Best Lana Del Rey Songs.
You shook your head in amusement.
âNow I can listen to Lana del Rey in your car.â
âOr yours.â
You turned to look at him and he was holding up car keys.
âNo⊠You didnât.â
âOh, yes, I did.â He nodded. âI built you a car.â
âOh, my GodâŠâ You slowly placed the tape on the bed. âI canât believe it.â
âI can show you, doll.â
He took your hand and grabbed the tape before leaving the room. He led you through the bunker until you reached the garage.
You let out a gasp of amazement as you saw a red car next to his Impala.
âOh, my God, Dean.â You jumped up and down in joy as you walked over to your new car. âYou did it? By yourself?â
âOf course I did.â He walked over to stand beside you. âYou like it?â
âDo I? Itâs the best Christmas present anyoneâs ever given me.â
Dean obviously liked that comment. A smile appeared on his face. He really had tried hard to give you a good present.
âYou know?â You bit your bottom lip, running a finger down your car before looking at Dean. âI think we should get it new.â
Deanâs mind was working in such a way that he understood your double meaning.
âOh, I think so too, sweetheart.â He said as he left the tape on top of the car.
He didnât even wait two seconds as he held you. You wrapped your legs around his hips and he opened the back door of the car, climbing in with you and leaving you on the seat face up. Your clothes quickly came off of your bodies.
âBaby, we'll get this car dirty before you even drive it.â
He entered you and you moaned loudly, your nails digging into his back and earning a growl from him as he started a steady pace, gaining satisfaction from checking out your expressions of pleasure. He buried his head in your neck and began nibbling on your skin.
âGod, Dean, harder.â
He picked up speed, the car windows thickening as it swayed in rhythm with Deanâs thrusts.
âMerry fucking Christmas to me.â He mumbled as he pushed you deeper into the seat.
The car seats were starting to get damp beneath you in a mix of sweat and cum.
âYou feel so good, Dean.â You sighed.
âYeah? You like my cock in your pussy, baby?â
âYes, I do.â You whimpered.
Your eyes rolled and you clenched around him as you came, sending him straight into his own orgasm and leaving his seed inside you, which slowly began to leak out and spread across the seats.
âGodâŠâ He huffed. âMerry Christmas, baby.â Dean whispered in your ear before placing a kiss there.
âMerry ChristmasâŠâ

not to go off on this again (and because of a bullshit clickbait article from screenrant as if that isn't their entire business model in the first place) but it's still so fucking mindboggling to me just how much henry cavill was able to brainwash people. like, the idea that he was the one that made the show and he was the only good thing about it and the only good casting choice when he was very noticeably the worst actor on the entire show and meanwhile the rest of the cast is extremely talented and easily acted circles around him. not to mention that he has all the charisma of a black hole sucking all of the chemistry out of the room.
and the whole idea that he is some uber fan of the franchise and the only person on the entire show that knows anything about the source material and cares about it which is also always said in conjunction with the idea that he's the one who made the show. when he didn't even know that the books existed, he only read them once after lauren told him about them, he's only played tw3 (and not even the dlc for it), and by his own admission he didn't do any research for the role. and then meanwhile you've got joey who wrote a whole ass song in ~24 hours and showed up in costume with a lute to audition and who's read the entire series at least 3 times as of 2023; therica, whose books are all annotated and she tries to go back and reread the series before each season and even goes on youtube to watch video essays to refresh her memories; cassie, who has a binder full of notes on philippa and her backstory and everything; and many, many other cast members who've done a lot of research into the books and their characters and the universe and the franchise. but somehow henry cavill is the massive superfan. because he said that a lot in interviews. while never actually giving any examples of that beyond, like, having said he played tw3 for a ton of hours. (which, duh, 'cause a playthrough of that game can easily clock in at +100 hours.)
and speaking of the idea that he just cares SO much about the source material and that's why he ragequit the show because the writers weren't following the books closely enough, likE. he is the one who made geralt's characterization book inaccurate in s1 because he would cut his lines and either just say nothing or grunt instead. (and he also gave his scene partners zero indication he was going to do this and just left them hanging and wondering what was going on and if he was actually going to say his lines and put them into the position of having to improvise and take his lines just to move the plot forward.) and the only reason why he suddenly started to advocate for a more book accurate geralt come s2 is because he got dunked on by reddit for his performance in s1. (which he also took virtually no responsibility for whatsoever and just passed all of the blame off onto the writers for HIS acting choices. wait, that's not entirely accurate. he also blamed yennefer and ciri's prominence on geralt's lack of dialogue even though ciri's scenes were the ones that were cut in s1. yennefer's, too, btw.) he also fucked up geralt and jaskier's friendship by cutting his lines in s1 (and imo there is a lot of implication that the things he was cutting in their scenes was actual affirmation on geralt's side of things that he actually cares about jaskier) and by his own admission, he didn't want to play them as being all buddy-buddy with each other. and his refusal to play geralt struggling with fatherhood and with any negative character traits in s2 led to the domino effect of eskel's death (which in itself led to vesemir trying to create new witchers and lambert's harsher attitude toward ciri), yennefer's betrayal, and voleth meir being the big bad of the season. he also cut a sex scene between geralt and yennefer in s2 because he didn't think it would be in character of them to have sex after reuniting (lolwut) and he cut a scene between geralt and triss of even them just platonically finding comfort in each other (that's what happens in the books.) but yeah, HE just cares about the source material SO MUCH. that's why everything he had a hand in went against the books.
(not to mention that the thing he was clashing with lauren over was that he was not the main character (ciri is the main character of the main books, btw) but rather co-lead with two women and he was mad that the show heavily revolves around women (the books heavily revolve around women) instead of men.) (in s2 interviews, he goes on about how important men being three dimensional characters is to him as if women being three dimensional characters on the show somehow means that men can't be. which is ironic of him to say anyway, tbh, considering he didn't want geralt to be a three dimensional character. as three dimensional characters have flaws. and he didn't want geralt to have any.) (oh, and just to mention but when talking about how violent men can be three dimensional and caring, henry cavill lists who men can be caring towards: other men, family, children. weird he doesn't mention women at all. i'm sure that's not an indication of anything especially when it's said by someone who's a self-professed nerd, lorebuff, redditor, and gamer. because they're always known for non-rancid takes about women. especially when they've already gotten flack for their "i'm afraid to flirt because i'll be accused of being a rapist" #metoo takes. đ
)
(also, just with the conspiracy theory that henry cavill ragequit the show because it wasn't following the books closely enough. like, that is just a conspiracy theory though. the only "proof" there ever was of it was henry cavill going on about how important adhering to the source material is to him. except everything he had a hand in went against the books, so that can't be true. and the thing he and lauren were clashing over was how he was not the main character (geralt is not the main character) and the prominence of women in the series (the women in the books drive the plot forward in massive ways). so that can't be true. and s3 was the closest adaption of the books anyway, so yeah. that really can't be true. and the only other thing that's "proof" is the rumor that the writers hate the source material. which was started by henry cavill's buddy, a writer who was fired from the show for allegedly being emotionally, physically, and sexually abusive. so i'm sure his word is totally trustworthy and he wouldn't have a vested interest in lying and creating a rumor to incite the fanbase against his former co-workers whom he was allegedly fired for mistreating in the first place. (btw, witin the past year, the same writer was fired again for allegedly the same kind of reasons.) also, i'm sure it's jut a coincidence how that rumor, which was started by henry cavill's friend, to disparage the show and the writers dropped about a week before henry cavill announced he was no longer going to be on the show. like, it definitely couldn't've been a coordinated effort between them or anything.) (psst, the rumor that hc was fired for being sexist actually has the most evidence supporting it. js.)

Omg based on the gifs you reblogged with our man and his tight shirts, could you write a story (maybe christmas) where Reader keeps buying Hotch shirts that are too tight and hes like why? and has to explain lololol
He's a little bit older...got a bit of a dad bod [Aaron Hotchner x Female Reader]
Masterlist || Ao3||Word Count: >1k|| AN: omg YES. YESS. YES. Merry Christmas to those who celebrate. The title is a nod to Sabrina Carpenter's Christmas Song! xoxo
Tags/Warnings:Â no use of y/n, dad bod Hotch, Hotch x His Tight Button-Ups, Christmas Morning, Christmas activities, Gift Giving, Established Relationship, BAU Reader, mentions of weight changes/body changes, Jack is present, age-gap relationship
Summary: You really...really love Hotch in his tight button-ups, so you choose not to size up this Christmas for his gifts.
Aaron Hotchner woke early on Christmas morning, the subtle glow of winter light filtering through the curtains. The tree in the living room twinkled with lights, the gifts beneath it carefully wrapped. Hotch was always the first to rise, a habit from years of early morning cases. Today, though, it was the excitement that nudged him from sleep. This Christmas was specialânot just because of the holiday, but because he was sharing it with you and Jack.
You stirred beside him, a soft sigh escaping your lips as you felt him shift. "Morning," you murmured, your voice thick with sleep but bright with the day's joy.
"Morning," Hotch replied, his voice low. He watched as you stretched, the corners of your eyes crinkling with a smile. "Ready to see what Santa brought?"
You laughed, the sound as warm as the blankets piled around you. "Only if I get coffee first."
Hotch grinned, pressing a quick kiss to your forehead before slipping out of bed to start the coffee. By the time he returned with two steaming mugs, Jack was already rummaging through the stockings, his excitement palpable.
The morning passed in a flurry of ripped wrapping paper and joyful exclamations. Hotch couldn't help but feel a profound sense of contentment watching you and Jack. You had integrated into their lives seamlessly, bringing a lightness to their home that Hotch hadn't realized was missing.
When Jack finally settled down with his new video games, Hotch found you in the kitchen, tidying up the remnants of the morningâs chaos. He wrapped his arms around you from behind, resting his chin on your shoulder. "Thank you for the shirts," he whispered, his breath warm against your ear. "But I think I might need a bigger size these days."
You turned in his arms, a mischievous glint in your eyes. "Oh? And why is that?" you teased.
Hotch chuckled, the sound deep and resonant. "Well, it seems I've filled out a bit more than I used to." He wasn't ashamed of itâhis body had changed, but he felt strong, healthy. And if the way your gaze lingered on him lately was any indication, you didn't seem to mind the changes either.
Your smile widened, and you reached up to trace the collar of his shirt, the fabric taut across his shoulders. "I've noticed," you admitted, your voice dropping to a whisper. "And I have to say, I really like it. The way your shirts fit now... itâs incredibly attractive."
Aaron Hotchner felt a familiar warmth spread through him, a warmth that had nothing to do with the coffee or the fire crackling in the living room. He was acutely aware of the changes in his body over the years. He wasn't as lean as he had been when Jack was born, or even when you first met him. Getting older, his fitness routine was not quite what it once was; he sometimes worried about how these changes were perceived, especially by someone younger like you.
"Yeah?" he asked, a part of him needing to hear more, to understand how you saw him.
You nodded, standing on your tiptoes to press a kiss to his jaw. "Yeah. It suits you. ItâsâŠreally hot," you confessed, a playful smirk tugging at your lips.
Hotch laughed, the sound rich and full of genuine happiness. He pulled you closer, his hands resting on your waist. "Well, I'm glad you think so," he said, and then, softer, "because there's no one else's opinion I care about more than yours."
You blushed at his words, your eyes shining with affection. "Good," you said simply. Then, with a teasing poke to his chest, you added, "Maybe Santa should bring you some more of those shirts next year."
Hotch pretended to consider it, his eyes twinkling with mirth. "Only if Santa agrees to keep making comments on how hot they look on me."
"You have no idea," you laughed, leaning in closer. "Sometimes, at work, it's honestly a little distracting." Your voice dropped to a playful whisper, "There are meetings where I'm definitely more focused on your...shirt situation than the case briefings."
Hotch's eyebrows rose, his lips curving into a smirk at your confession. "Is that so?" he asked, his tone equally teasing.
"Absolutely," you affirmed with a nod. "Especially when you're up there giving a profile, all serious and command-mode with your suit jacket off... Itâs a lot to handle," you grinned, poking him again gently.
Hotch's laughter filled the kitchen, deep and heartfelt. He pulled you closer, his hands resting on your waist. "Well, I'll have to make sure take the jacket off more often then, just to keep things interesting," he quipped.
"I'd appreciate that," you said, your eyes alight with mischief. "Maybe I'll even start a personal rating system for them. You know, to provide feedback."
"Looking forward to your reviews," Hotch replied, the warmth in his voice reflecting the warmth in his chest. This easy banter, the shared smiles, they made everything feel right.
This Christmas, like all the moments since you'd joined his life, felt complete. Hotch knew there would be challenges ahead, cases to solve, and long nights. But with you by his side, sharing whispers and stolen kisses between cups of coffee and Christmas lights, he felt ready for anything.

Get to know rapper!chris x singer!reader!!
SINGER!READER
Genre: pop, indie-pop
Similar artists: Madison Beer, Sabrina Carpenter, Billie Eillish
Albums and covers (coming soon)
Gained Fame: In 2021, Y/N started making music after her boyfriend cheated on her and their messy breakup, she put all of her feelings into songs and decided her new life started at that moment. She tested with sounds and one day she randomly posted them out of nowhere. Her confidence, however, skyrocketed when she only got maybe 1000 monthly listeners after about 3 months. She gave up and continued with life as if nothing happened.
In 2023, a beloved artist named Gracie Abrams, noticed her pathetic music and reached out. Y/N, much to her dismay, of course said yes when Gracie asked to do a collaboration with her. The song blew up on tik tok and other social media platforms and Y/Nâs 6 songs soon started rising. Rooftops, a song about her ex, was #14 on the top 200 in the US. Gracie and her became good friends and Y/N got into song writing again.
Cute little headcanons:
Singer!y/n, who doesn't pay attention to rude or sexualising comments about her body but Chris does. When they're out in public and Chris hears someone say one thing about her, heâs practically on top of them and heâs not scared to beat the shit out of them.
Singer!y/n, who keeps a notebook full of random lyrics inspired by overheard conversations, half of which make absolutely no sense at all, but are oddly poetic
Singer!y/n, who insists on hand signing fanâs posters because it's more âpersonalâ even if it takes hoursSinger!y/n, who will stop a concert mid way if she sees a sign or an outfit that she loves just to compliment that person.
Singer!y/n, who loves making up dumb tik tok dances to her songs just for funSinger!y/n, whoâs fans are called the most ridiculous name. It started as a joke but now it's a part of her brand.
Singer!y/n, who takes a polaroid picture with her team before every show
Singer!y/n, who gets nervous before award shows, so Chris shows her his âpre game hypeâ which consists of terrible dancing and a not so helpful pep talk in a mirror
RAPPER!CHRIS (CHRI$)
Genre: hip hop, rap (obviously)
Similar artists: Playboi Carti, The Kid LaROI, Lil Skies
Albums and covers (coming soon)
Gained fame: Chris started his career more recently at the beginning of 2024. Because of the youtube channel, Chris didn't need to be famous for his music. About mid 2024, his music started to get recognized by more than just Sturniolo Triplets fans. Playboi Carti actually liked Chrisâs music for what it was.
On Cartiâs tik tok, he posted a video with one of Chrisâs songs as the sound. Don't know how this made Chri$ more popular but his listens blew up hours later. 11 million monthly listeners quickly went to 30 in less than a month.
Cute little headcanons:
Chri$, who always kept his word, and has never done drugs, drank alcohol, or smoked a vape or cigarette in his life.
Chri$, whoâs concerts are the most wild and fun thing ever. The energy in the sold out stadiums is exhilarating and the fans in the front row will probably not be able to hear anything else for days.
Chri$, who makes sure that you are always comfortable and happy no matter what youâre doing.
Chri$, who has your stuff scattered everywhere. Heâs got hair ties on his wrist, your hairbrush in his car, and your clothes are all over the place.
Chri$, who once hung a pair of your panties on the rear view mirror in his car because the color âcomplimentedâ the vibe
Chri$, who never lets you pay for anything. This man will do everything and anything to make sure your card never sees daylight. Sometimes he steals your wallet before you even leave the car.
Fics to look forward to: (I obviously have not been busy)
Sleepytime - Chris asks Y/N to sing him to sleep one night
Model - Y/Nâs manager needs to meet with her about upcoming tour outfits but Chris is not having it with her leaving
Noise Complaints - Late night studio sessions in Y/Nâs apartment lead to awkward run ins with the neighbors
Pink Sweater Season - Chris borrows Y/Nâs favorite oversized pink sweatshirt for a music video and the internet has questions.
Off Key Apologies - After a heated argument, Chris writes a very pathetic song as an apology but Y/N doesn't want to hear it
Mute - A mic on a live stream reveals way too much about how Chris feels about Y/N
Paper House - The power went out and the house is quiet so Chris and Y/N decide to build houses out of cards.
Stage Left - A surprise performance during Chrisâ tour has the crowd cheeringâand Y/N wondering where she stands with Chris
Signs - Chris finds an old playlist you made for him and realizes the feelings were there all alongâhe just missed the signs.
Second Verse - Chris struggles to finish a song aboutâŠlove and how he hates to admit how much the second verse sounds like you.
REQUESTS!!

Last night I uploaded the penultimate chapter of "First Impact", which means that there's only one chapter left until I'm free this installment of "Collision Course" comes to an end - that also means that there's only one more "fun fact" post to make after this one. But for now, let's focus on the one accompanying this post. So something you may have noticed while reading is that some chapter titles and author's note quotes are titles from songs/song lyrics. Originally, every chapter was going to share a title with a song, with what song that was being based on vibes. However, I quickly scrapped this idea, as the reasoning behind each song wasn't immediately apparent. For example, Chapter 1 was originally named after Cosmo Sheldrake's "Linger Longer". Vibe-wise, this song checks out. The lyrics describe a setting where abstract parts of natural are personified, while also telling the listener to return to nature. At the same time, the speaker also talks about how we are helpless to the greater forces in the universe (/pos), and about how nature is a constant force in the world.
Now let's compare that to the events of Chapter 1. The chapter starts out with Zero waking up from a dream, only to attempt to disregard his dream and throw himself into his "real-life," which includes his duties as a Hunter. If we interpret nature as a metaphor for reality, "Linger Longer" fits perfectly, with this verse in particular working especially well:
"Come trickle back to den and roost Come claw and tooth, and fish and goose Come fin and tail, and paw and hoof For life has a passion for living"
But here's the thing: without that explanation, it would not be clear at all why I had picked that song. Hence why I cut the idea of vibe-based song titles (that and I soon ran out of songs that fit what I was writing about). But as I stated earlier, some chapters still have song titles/quotes. The ones that I used have meanings that are a lot easier for the reader to figure out on their own, but just for fun, I'll be interpreting some of them (spoilers of all shapes and sizes under the cut).
Let's start with an easy one: Chapter 34's title ("Son of Evil") is an allusion to the vocaloid song "Daughter of Evil" by Mothy, with the quotes being from JubyPhonic's cover of the song (the older version of her cover can be found here). The first quote I used reads as such (the bolded lyrics are the ones that are the most relevant):
"Blooming ever-sweet, the evil flower reaps Drowning in colors 'til it's all you can see Pitiful as ever, they were growing by her side Just to pave the road ahead for her, their destiny to die"
Alright, now let's see: "Blooming" can refer to Zero's second awakening, or to how he's still young and developing as a person. "Evil flower reaps" can be interpreted as a reference to how he was (or is, if we look at the flashback this quote refers to from a present-tense perspective) considered to be "evil" or maverick as a result of his programming, with "reaps' being an allusion to how he is sometimes referred to as the "Red Reaper.
"Drowning in colors" can refer to the different blood colors of Garuma's unit (as well as how they are all murdered by Zero), with "pitiful as ever" works as a way of citing how Zero easily defeats them all. "Growing by her side" can be used as a parallel to how those Hunters probably saw themselves on similar footing as Zero: to them, they were all just a bunch of reploids in a room. It didn't really matter that some of them were Hunters while one of them was some random dude in a capsule. They were all on equal ground with one another. "Pave the road ahead of her" suggests that the deaths of the Hunters in Garuma's unit served as a means for Zero to become a Hunter himself, since killing them directly led to him meeting Sigma. And on that note, "destiny to die" means exactly what it says on the tin: Garuma's unit was screwed the moment they opened that capsule, both in canon and in "Collision Course". Afterall, they weren't releasing an ordinary robot: they were releasing a war machine.
The second quote is a lot more simple to break down: "To overthrow the evil princess high above Taking to the streets, at last, they all had had enough Leading from the front of such a violent mob, in red Was a noble dame in armor, coming for her head"
"Overthrow the evil... high above" refers to Sigma, who, at this point in the plot, is chilling on the top of the highest floor of his fortress. "Taking to the streets, at last, they all had had enough" is a direct allusion to the Hunters - they're done with Sigma's nonsense. At this point, they're willing to take him down at any cost, including their own lives.
"Leading... such a violent mob, in red" is meant to show how Zero is the commander of the Hunters in Sigma's stead (and has been for a while), and that it's his idea that their acting on. "Noble" is fairly self-explanatory: the Hunters are going to kill a psycho that thought it was a good idea to nuke a city full of people, even though they could die in attempting to stop him. "Coming for her head" shows how Zero is ready to throw hands with Sigma, (and it also serves as foreshadowing for the final battle).
Okay, now let's do one that's more difficult: Chapter 38 is named after and has quotes from the song "Dear Dictator" by Saint Motel. The first quote is this: "Everybody tends to disagree On just how evil A single human being should ever be And all your bones, they scream for more" "Everybody tends to disagree" refers to how the Hunters were divided in whether or not they should follow Sigma. Half of them thought it was a good idea, and the other half felt that it wasn't. "On just how evil" shows how deep the nuances of this disagreement goes: some of the Hunters who joined Sigma were forced to do so (such as Mac and Storm Eagle), and are fully aware of what he was capable of. Others, like Spark Mandrill and Chill Penguin, didn't have a clue as to the full extent of what Sigma was up to - they joined out of loyalty, or because they were bored. "A single human being" is about how Sigma is just one man, and yet, is still capable of committing incredible harm. "...all your bones, they scream for more" is a reference to the abusive relationship Sigma had with Zero. Zero was hurt by him emotionally and physically, but still wanted his attention and approval. Now for the second quote, which is the song's chorus:
"And at the trial, there'll be no jury And all the dead are going to play witness Not too late to say you're sorry It's too late to truly mean it"
"...at the trial, there'll be no jury" represents how Zero (and to a lesser extent, X), are judge, jury, and executioner in the fight against Sigma. They're deciding his fate - not the people of the city, not the rest of the Hunters, and most certainly not Sigma himself. "...all the dead are going to play witness" is a direct allusion to all the blood on Sigma's hands: it started with Striker (aka Green Biker Dude). It continued with the Hunters who died when the Headquarters was bombed. It went further still when the Hunters had to fight with their ex-colleagues when Sigma threatened to nuke Abel City. And it'll extend to thousands of people if he isn't stopped. "Not too late to say you're sorry" is a direct callout for how Sigma "apologizes" to Zero for how he's mistreated him in the past, and how he claims he'll never do what he did again. "...too late to truly mean it" shows how untrue that apology is. He had plenty of chances to stop mistreating Zero. But he kept doing it anyway. And I'll say this much: he knew that what he did was wrong. Hence why he always did it in private. That's the thing about abusers - if they didn't know what they were doing to their victims was bad, they would do it in public (although, I will say that doesn't stop some of them: some abusers don't care who sees what they do, as they genuinely believe that they're in the right/won't be stopped). Not only that, but he continues to manipulate Zero after he "apologizes" - the "apology" in and of itself is a manipulation. Sigma is not changing his ways, and everything he does makes that clear. I'm going to call it here for now, because this post has gotten long enough. Let me now if you want me to do anything similar with lyric analysis again - I actually had a lot of fun doing this! (If you have any other questions, my inbox is open for those, too!) (If this is your first time hearing about "Collision Course" or "First Impact", please examine the ao3 tags before reading. While the story is rated T for Teen, it does go into some serious subject matter, as certain aspects of this post would suggest. Stay safe, everyone.)

One more thing#There's so much emphasis on Christianity in bsd. It makes sense for Atsushi and Dostoyevsky I suppose due to the irl authorsâ but...#Why was Oda handed a Bible in this episode? Why was Ango carrying a Bible with him in the Beast movie?#When you take into account that Christianity only makes for 1.5% of religious believers in Japanâ it's just curious.#But maybe I'm missing something? Was Oda-author Christian too?#Then again I can really feel this wider underlying pattern which... Exceeds the characters in a way?#It's mostly details so it'd be hard to list them but... Idk.#Why was there a cross behind Kunikida when he witnessed the little child die.#đ€#That would be all. This season is very beautiful and I love Mushitarou but can't WAIT to get back to Atsushi I miss him đ„șđ„șđ„ș#random rambles

I'm gonna have to work on my final project non stop for like a month straight bc I procrastinated on it too much fuck my stupid baka life
#.txt#also I have to do a movie pitch for it bitch it's an amv with intentionally one dimensional characters đ tf do I even say about it#at least the characters are like. knockoff jaime and tommen so its almost like im drawing asoiaf fanart#unfortunately I've come to hate them. the knockoffs I mean#I wanna change the designs a bit so they dont resemble my blorbos as much. i think im gonna give the kid darker hair#ok well discount jaime just looks like him with 2 hands and a blue cape đand I cant change him atp#my worst mistake was giving him like. a solid metal skirt armor thing bc its a pain in the ass to animate#at the start of the year I had the most work done out of everyone how did this happen#its bc they started nitpicking the story and I kinda lost motivation to work on it lke this shit is stupid. and cringe#by they I mean the extra screenwriting teachers we had a couple lessons with which like. this is an animation course not a writing course#I'd get it if it was like. a full time school but we have 2 3 hour classes a week we dont have time for this shit man#ig my mistake was that my idea didn't start from the story it started from the song I wanted to make a cool music video for it#its not that the story is nonsensical or anything its just a very basic fairytale esque thing nothing groundbreaking#'but you're not SAYING anything with this' I'm not trying to omg just let me make my little amv :(#does everything need a plot twist or to subvert expectations is it not enough that it looks cool#there's a couple people who are worse off than me in terms of how much they've done but also theres a couple that are nearly done#looking at them like god I wish that were me.....#and also I think I accidentally overwrote a shot I worked on for 3 hours. killing myself#maybe I can restore a previous version but its on the school computer and the school is closed for a week so im not gonna know until then

what have been your favorite songs off of clancy so far??? iâve been so amazed by that album and i wanna hear your thoughts!!
AAAA OKAY. I'm just gonna copy here my ranking from last night after the 1st album listen. Mind you, before yesterday I made a point not to listen to any of the re-release singles and avoided ALL video spoilers, so I went in completely blind .
^ i forgot about Navigating and i put it on the same tier as Midwest
(okay i rambled and this is all jumbled together so - more thoughts under)
I still need to listen to it a few more times today so I can properly rank them but yeah. Routine / Oldies are my top ones for sure, with Backslide / At the Risk / Snap Back falling riiight under. Those three kinda broke me ngl.
Lavish for sure will go up in the ranking because I love it so so much it's SO fun haha.
The Craving I prefer Jenna's version over the single - just different feels. The single version I'd place it with Next Semester.
But yeah, I was sobbing pathetically on Oldies Station, and again on At The Risk lmao. BACKSLIDE!!! BROKE MY HEART!!! NOT EVEN GONNA TALK ABOUT THE VIDEO OTHERWISE!!! WOOOOOOO
Emotional Damage x200
Me and my friend were talking about it, and we both agree that Clancy feels like an amalgamation of every previous album. There is something so heavy and personal about it, very reminiscent of Self Titled, that we haven't seen in a while (since Blurryface I'd say). Not that Trench wasn't personal, but it feels incredibly lore-heavy (aside from Smithereens and The Legend <- i can't listen to it now because yeah. Same thing for me).
Obviously you got Neon Gravestones and Redecorate on SAI (WHICH I LOVE, will take no slander), but yeah.
*Oh and Leave the City - same vibes as Paladin sort of.
Clancy is special. It feels much more intimate. Much more emotionally charged. Trench felt like an album for the fans; SAI is the fun experimental let's go team one. But Clancy 1000% feels like this is for him. Like a letter to past and future versions of Tyler - does this make sense?
Sorry I think I rambled a bit much lol - I might do a proper review or whatever once I gave the album a few more spins but yeah! Right off the bat I am in love with it, if feeling a little too called out by some songs đ„Čâïž
But yeah. What about you???? What até your thoughts on the album??? What are you favs????
#i never like to listen to pre-release singles because I prefer to have the full album experience#same with bmth - can you believe i haven't listened to A SINGLE SONG yet?? Lost / Strangers / Kool-aid NOTHING#i avoided those for the past year like the plague and now i get to have the full experience đđ#the videos were so CUTE i had to pause a few times to laugh#LAVISH i love lavish hahaha#MIDWEST!! DOGGY PICK!!!#Jenna's version of the craving đ„Čđ„čđ oof#also need to dissect them a bit before I go full lore dema etc but DAMN#I haven't watched their live stream yet - will do it in a bit actually#clique mutuals if you're there join the convo i wanna hear what everyone thinks of Clancy!!!!#darya answers#twenty one pilots#clancy

hate when i see a youtube video that's like 'analyzing why [thing] is bad!' and you watch the video and they just say nothing for twenty minutes
#random thoughts#watched a video on why a specific character was poor representation for survivors of assault#and it was such a nothing burger of a video#'this character is bad because children might see them and think their behavior is okay' okay?#i learned how to block out memories from finn adventure time but that doesn't mean memory suppression shouldn't be addressed in media#plus hazbin hotel. i'm talking about angel dust btw if that wasn't blaringly obvious. is an adult cartoon. for adults#adult cartoons shouldn't have to restrict their subject matter because kids could see it#and angel dust being a male queer SA victim using hypersexuality as a coping mechanism could be good!#and the fact he hits on other people despite it making them uncomfortable isn't exactly a problem a la his character?#it could be a control thing. i used to do something similar (pushing other people's boundaries and complaining when they pushed back)#because it made me feel some kind of control over my life#it could start off as a really shitty joke and then grow into 'oh god is that why he does that??'#but anyway their second main point was that the songs were bad? and that poison being an upbeat song makes it bad#like despite listing many other songs which are upbeat with heavy lyrics. but somehow poison is the exception because it's a cartoon?#like again that could be a character thing. angel dust using obfuscation as a coping mechanism to distract himself from his shitty life.#ïœĄïœ„ïŸïŸïœ„the lyrics are upbeat to distract you from how dead i feel insideïŸïŸïœ„ïœĄ#and their reading of the second song seemed really mean-spirited?#like as 'everyone has problems so you're not special because you're a whiny baby' rather than 'you're not as alone as you think you are'#and like if op wanted to just complain about a show they watched then yeah go off i do that all the time#but don't parade it as character analysis???#and they say 'oh reading it as a feelgood you're not alone message doesn't work because these characters' struggles are not equal'#but like. sometimes rape needs to feel like it's not some special trauma. it's not unique and you're not uniquely fucked up for it#two characters' traumas don't need to be directly comparable for them to bond!!!#and im not like. defending hazbin hotel btw. never seen it not going to see it no thanks#i'm just complaining about a mediocre youtube video that i'm going to forget about in a week#god i hate that brand of youtube video. where they just complain about things without going into depth about why they're bad#especially if their complaints are shallow and don't have to do with like. the actual structure of a character or story#like it's so easy to say 'this character is bad because theyre a predatory stereotype' but like. go into some depth at least#i think i hate these videos so much because they're fueled purely by hate. no love for the source material or even a desire to learn#or a love for storytelling even

So like I know that ăăżă§ăȘăăźăȘă has romantic undertones due to the context and who it's being sung by in Itoki Hana's story (Phantom Aria), but like. I keep associating it with like. tragic siblings (especially twins separated through time/space, hm, gee, wonder why, hmmmmmmmmmmmm)
#egginfroggintalkin#as far as submas goes I have VIVID mental images of a crossings au animatic#but also gravity falls because of course of course I hopped from one set of siblings to another#sad old men go brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr#anyway yeah#much of the romantic undertones are really present in. again. context and the video that goes with the song#but like OUGH the LYRICS my StArS#also the 'kennst du es wohl?' lives in my head rent-free#it's a quote from 'kennst du das land' by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe#and translates about to 'knowst thou it well?'#or 'do you know it well?'#if you peek in the comment section you should find the comment that says as such#anyway yeah so this song rots my brain from time to time and I'm losing it a bit right now so yeah enjoy the song I guess!#I love this song so so much it's just so askhfsdjhgjksdfhlgjfdh#so brain bunny much haunting wow#it's just so ethereal and dreamlike yet there's this desperation#and the lyrics. missing someone so so much. wanting nothing but those who have gone ahead/been left behind#those who are lost and who are no longer beside us#wanting. yearning. pining. grasping at what is left#it's enough to drive someone to madness (like a dream) (it's all a dream) (and wakefulness comes and the flowers wilt)#hey golly look at me being prosaic don't mind me#anyway bye! aaa!

ik my layout rn is rime bc shes also very important to me but if im not the person obsessed with an obscure & obtuse vocaloid song series to everyone else then whats even the point. my favorite character ever rn has one single piece of official art & a 3 & a half minute song with weirdly specific wording and like 30 different possible interpretations & thats it thats all that exists of her. her creator never speaks of her (or any of the other characters from the series or even the series itself for that matter). she's referenced in other songs as only a sacrifice/victim with no extra details about her character. the amount of fan art of her minus my own is in the very low double digits & several of those are because i got my friends to draw her for me. u may be insane for ur fave character but are u strong enough to subsist off exactly two things of them for 4 years & love them just as much if not more than when u first saw them.
#sometimes i ask myself at what point am i just making an oc#but i do frequently go back to the source material both to ground myself & also see if i can pick out anything i missed before#this is about tenshi but im like this about all the aru sekai girls. i love all of them. theres next to nothing for all of them#ive said it before but its the method of delivery for me#condensing all the info -and theres a lot- into song lyrics & sometimes text flashed in the bg of the song video#& tying it together with other songs through motifs & certain word choices#its just very fun to me#once again i have GOT to switch my profile to the yamete kudasai chara as soon as i get to draw her again.#[person who does not shut up about aru sekai] am i the aru sekai person to u people yet

nate please please please please I am shaking you by the shoulders right now no one needs to do this please you can make a actual thought provoking interesting thumbnail for the song you don't need to appeal to clickbait algorithms anymore you're still letting yourself be bound to it people loved your early original songs for what they were without this. please stop doing this please stop changing thumbnails I am going to cry
#literally has done this to multiple thumbnails that were even perfectly okay before#I mean the original for this one wasn't all that good either but this is far worse#massive disappointment when I saw with you change it's so. boring and predictable I have seen it plenty of times before#literal opposite of what he was going for#not to mention SCRAP HEAP DOESN'T EVEN HAVE THE SONG TITLE ANYWHERE EXCEPT THE VIDEO ITSELF#nothing left to want became boring too though at least STILL INCLUDED THE TITLE IN IT#does he realize that. THIS is probably just damaging his content further?#I mean he can do whatever he wants and if he's happy with it then fine by me#but do you SEE the traction and views sandcastle kingdoms and paid in exposure got? besides his fnaf songs and parodies#he's ALSO known for phantom! an original song! and I hate that his rebranding of it as a hazbin hotel song actually worked!#because it's not going to continue to!#like dude we all know a lesson in grief has nothing to do with sonic. none of the lyrics tie into anything sonic related whatsoever#ik he's trying to get his stuff out there via the things he was once known for but maybe..... it's time to FULLY let go of that?#bc it's embarrassing to watch and it doesn't feel all that passionate. though he's dropped fandom music he's still very much bound to it#and ADMITS it#please you can make original and thought provoking art! without ties to fandom! idk what you did with your first two original albums#but it wasn't this and you should do it again#I swear nate people love your music for what it is and even though to let go was not my favorite#you still have potential far past what the algorithm is doing to you. none of this is genuine and it's very much present#in how you promote your music. I feel it when I see these thumbnails. I feel it when I watch these videos. it PUTS ME OFF so much#sorry for the rant in the tags and sorry if this is a hot take I hope y'all can see where I'm coming from đ#natewantstobattle#nwtb#nathan sharp#nate posting#natewantstobtl
