sophia is the least surprised whenever someone gets hurt, including you. will she react the same every time as if you're bleeding out dying even when you just stub your toe on something? yes. but, it's the thought that counts! so when she hears a yelp from inside the apartment, she's not surprised when she rounds the corner to see you mumbling under your breath about how that table should be moved by now while standing on one leg. and yet, she still rushes over to you asking if you're okay and what happened. depending on how bad the injury is determines how badly she freaks out, and if there's any blood whatsoever she's taking it like you're bleeding out, putting you on the couch and getting the first aid kit. it's safe to say she's gotten used to you getting injured randomly throughout the day, but she still babies you every time like it's the first time getting hurt around her. it's the same if you're sick. she'll do anything to make sure you feel better especially if it was a more serious injury, doing literally everything before you can even think of asking her. she just knows. it's a little scary sometimes.

manon

manon is also not that surprised whenever you get hurt because of how many times it happens. she expects it by now but it still shocks her when she hears you yell from across the room or wherever you are. she is already walking towards you with the first aid kit before you can even call for her and she just shakes her head seeing you get hurt doing something stupid again. that being said, she also babies you, but not as much as sophia. she likes taking care of you and she doesn't get to do it often, so she does everything in her power when she is. she makes sure you're completely okay before helping you into bed or on the couch and puts the first aid kit away before coming back to you. her go to way to comfort anyone, including herself is watching comfort shows/movies, so that's exactly what she does once she ensures you're okay and she can relax a little bit, laying down next to you and putting something you like on the tv. she may call you an idiot for the ways you get hurt sometimes, but she means well and you can tell in her eyes that she's genuine every time she helps you whenever you injure yourself accidentally.

dani might or might not laugh in your face at times depending on how you got hurt. if she witnessed it especially. it's her first instinct if it's funny how you got hurt before she quickly hurries over to you and checks to see if you're okay. she doesn't mean to laugh, she just honestly can't help it sometimes. she does apologize for laughing if you're actually hurt, and she wouldn't do it again if it was a serious injury. she might actually scold you a little bit if it was a bad injury because of your clumsy ass while helping you with the first aid kit, mumbling curses under her breath about how one day you'll hurt yourself really bad. it's a little surprising but just tell her that you're fine, that you won't hurt yourself too badly, and she'll lighten up a little bit. but, she's not leaving your side ever. she knows you well enough to know you can get injured anywhere so she now does everything to ensure you don't get hurt, but it still happens sometimes unfortunately for her. she'll still scold you after every time.

lara also might laugh, occasionally if she knows you're not seriously hurt. she can tell the difference in how you react when you get hurt if it's serious or not, and that's what determines how she reacts to it. if it's not serious, she just shakes her head while jokingly saying how clumsy you are but still helping you and babying you a bit. if it's serious then she's serious, she doesn't fuck around when you're actually hurt. she is immediately getting the first aid kit when she hears you yell and she is the calmest one to help you with the injury. the way her whole demeanor changes is surprising every time, and when she looks at you and asks if you're okay with genuine eyes and a soft voice you just fall more in love with her. she won't leave your side until she knows 100% you're okay and back to normal, calling out of schedules if she has to to make sure you're better.

megan

megan is nearly as bad as you. it's terrible. one of you is injured most of the time if not both of you. one day she'll be helping you and the next you'll be helping her it's never ending honestly. and somehow she freaks out every time you get hurt. as if you're dying on her! she tries her best to help you but there are times where she just gives you reassuring words while you patch yourself up if she can't. but she is doing everything under the sun for you if you get hurt more seriously. anything you ask of her she will do, and she'll ask you every ten minutes if you need anything or how you're doing. you want something to eat? she's driving to your favorite place and bringing it back for you. you want to watch a movie and relax? she's bringing every blanket and pillow possible and dimming the lights in case you fall asleep. she's down bad and it shows whenever you're hurt.

The library was Logan’s fortress. It was a place of order and quiet, two things he valued more than most people. He enforced both with the kind of intensity that earned him nicknames like “The Library Tyrant” from the frequent users of the library. To Logan, it wasn’t an insult but an acknowledgment of his authority. If the patrons didn’t want judgmental stares or sharp-tongued quips, they shouldn’t ask questions like, “Where are the books?” in a room literally filled with shelves of them.

Vanessa, his boss and the one person Logan genuinely liked, tolerated his behavior because she knew he was worth it. No one else could keep the library running as efficiently as Logan. Beneath his gruff demeanor, she knew he cared. About the books, the institution, and, grudgingly, the people. Not that he’d ever admit it.

Vanessa was also the only person who knew Logan had a secret fondness for historical romances. A well-worn copy of The Duke’s Forbidden Desire sat discreetly hidden among the war histories and biographies that lined his locker. He read it during lunch breaks, retreating into the world of dashing dukes and forbidden trysts, a guilty pleasure he would take to the grave.

And then there was Wade.

Wade Wilson was the polar opposite of Logan. Cheerful, approachable, and full of energy. Twice a week, he descended upon the Children’s Corner like a whirlwind of chaos and joy. He brought stories to life, weaving magic with his animated voices, exaggerated gestures, and uncontainable enthusiasm. Parents adored him, kids idolized him, and Vanessa treated him like a younger brother.

Logan, however, remained unmoved. Or at least that’s what he tried to convince himself.

Logan was reshelving books near the Children’s Corner one day when Wade began reading The Snail and the Whale to a group of enraptured children. Logan wasn’t paying attention at first. His mind focused on alphabetizing until Wade’s voice drew him in.

Wade had a knack for storytelling, but this was something else entirely. His voice dipped and soared, matching the rhythm of the prose, soft and soothing one moment, excited and adventurous the next. Logan found himself lingering, captivated by the cadence of Wade’s words.

He wasn’t prepared when Wade looked up mid-sentence and caught him staring. Their eyes met, and Wade’s lips curved into a knowing smile. Logan felt his cheeks flush. He turned on his heel and practically fled. Behind him, Wade didn’t miss a beat, continuing the story with a grin that didn’t leave his face for the rest of the session.

Vanessa leaned against Logan’s desk, sipping her coffee as he furiously stamped due dates on a pile of books. She watched him in silence for a moment before breaking it with a smirk.

“So,” she began, her tone far too casual, “Wade told me you were watching storytime yesterday.”

Logan’s hand froze mid-stamp. “I was not watching,” he snapped. “I was working.”

“Uh-huh.” Vanessa raised an eyebrow. “And by ‘working,’ you mean standing there like a deer in headlights while Wade charmed the kids and you?”

Logan glared at her. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Vanessa grinned, clearly enjoying his discomfort. “He said you ran off like a teenager caught sneaking into a PG-13 movie.”

Logan groaned and rubbed his temples. “Why are we even talking about this?”

“Because,” she said, setting her coffee down, “it’s hilarious. And because I’ve been waiting years for someone to get under your skin.”

“No one is ‘getting under my skin,���” Logan muttered, but his flushed ears betrayed him.

Vanessa tilted her head, studying him. “You know, he’s a good guy, Logan. Maybe you should try being more…” She waved her hand vaguely in his direction. “Friendly.”

Logan crossed his arms. “And why would I do that?”

She smirked. “Because you could use more friends. Besides, Wade has this way of charming people. It blindsides you and you end up liking him before you even know it. And maybe you don’t mind that as much as you think.”

Logan scowled. “You’re insufferable.”

“And you’re avoiding the point.” Vanessa grabbed her coffee cup and headed for the door.

Logan was deeply engrossed in The Duke’s Forbidden Desire when the door to the staff room creaked open. He didn’t look up, assuming it was Vanessa, until a familiar voice broke the silence.

“Well, well,” Wade drawled, his grin practically audible. “Caught you red-handed reading the dirty stuff at work have I?.”

Logan snapped the book shut, shoved it under the table, and glared at him. “It’s not a dirty book.”

“Any book with the word ‘Desire’ on the front of it is dirty. It’s a universal law,” Wade replied, plopping himself into a chair like he belonged there. His grin widened at Logan’s embarrassed glare. “Didn’t know you were into dashing dukes and scandalous love affairs. Got a favorite trope? Enemies to lovers, maybe?” he gave him a pointed look like Logan was supposed to understand some hidden meaning in his words.

Logan’s grip on the book tightened. “It’s none of your business.”

“Relax, man, I think it’s cute.” Wade leaned forward, resting his chin in his hand. “You’ve got layers. Like an angry little onion. I love the glasses by the way. Serious dedication to the sexy librarian look.”

Logan snatched his glasses off of his face and stood abruptly, clutching his book in one hand like a lifeline. “Shut up,” he snapped and stormed out the room.

Wade’s laughter followed Logan out the door.

Idk if I'm gonna make a review post, exactly, but the things that went on with Sonic's character in movie 3 have left me reeling, and dying to analyze. I don't have many screenshots to share, and the ones I do aren't good quality bc the movie's not released digitally yet, but here goes.

For one, the theme of dealing with grief was so well handled. I was hoping they were going to use the parallel of this Sonic losing someone close to him, just like Shadow had, and that's just what they did. What made it even more painful, however, was how Sonic was faced with the possibility of losing a second parental figure.

Shadow saw him hunched over Tom, pleading with him to wake up, and remembered himself doing the same when Maria had died. That was where Shadow saw a bit of himself in Sonic.

Shadow took mental notes of it, but he didn't back off, though he didn't make any other attempts to hurt Tom. Heck, he wouldn't have attacked in the first place if Tom hadn't been disguised as Walters.

And just... watching the way Sonic just started spiraling after this scene was so heartbreaking. The way he looked so lost and broken as they were taking him away in the ambulance, when Maddie didn't say anything to them, and the camera just zoomed out for a few seconds, showing him and his brothers looking so small and so lost in the world as they were left alone, unsure if their dad would be okay.

Sonic didn't want comfort. After the initial fear and grief, the anger he'd felt earlier when he turned on Shadow came back with a vengeance, quite literally. Looking at their calmer, almost normal everyday life earlier in the movie, it seems everything's fine. Sonic seemed fine and perky. I was taken aback at how calm he was about finding his old cave. He seemed fine, all things considered from earlier in his life. The Before Times, as fanfics have dubbed them.

But the moment his found family was threatened, the moment he was faced with the possibility of losing the home and love he'd finally gotten after so many years of pain and isolation, he fell apart. He became aggressively protective of it. Of course he would want to defend those he loves, but not like this. Not the Sonic we know.

The way Shadow phrased it later, "What kind of hero abandons his friends to seek revenge? Abandons his family?"

That struck a nerve, but Sonic just snapped back, "Don't you dare talk about my family."

The expressions he had after he'd taken the Master Emerald and gone after Shadow were so complex. You can see the mix of emotions on his face. Most clearly, the anger. But mixed in, you see the pain, the grief, the paralyzing fear of losing someone else, and you see how emotionally fragile he really is.

Shadow scoffs about how he'd thought that Sonic cared for them. "Especially the one, what's his name again? Tom?"

And that pushed him over the edge.

The way he just let out that chilling scream of rage and grief and went on to punch Shadow so hard he quite literally sent him flying straight into the moon. He was enraged. He was distressed. He was spiraling. And he was, for a few minutes, completely out of control.

We know that this version of Sonic is not so reserved about killing people, like the game version. In the second movie, Sonic had every intention of killing Robotnik in the final battle, and he thought he succeeded. This marks the second time that if someone threatens Sonic's family, he's out for blood. In that vein, he's like his game counterpart; it's the safety of his loved ones, not himself, that he's concerned about. Passionate about.

Except.

He could not bring himself to do it.

I think part of him was remembering what Walters had said about Shadow having experienced loss, the way he had.

He'd won here. He could've just killed Shadow right then and there. Shadow was even goading him into just doing it. Demanded what he was waiting for. Pointing to his own chest and yelling that he was right there. To just do it. (Another thing to analyze; Shadow was just done with everything and didn't even care if he died at this point, but that's for another post.)

But something was stopping him.

Even in those screenshots, you can see the pain and anger mixed on his face. I could be mistaken, but it looks like there's a tear in his eye. (If I'm right, the idea of him crying during this fight makes me break apart in sadness.)

And then came the flashback. This is what drives me insane.

In Sonic Adventure 2, Shadow is out to destroy the world, and it's remembering Maria's true final wish that stopped him.

I never could've predicted that in this version, it was Sonic who was out to kill someone, kill Shadow, but remembering Tom's words to him about not letting his pain change who he is was what stopped him. Sonic was the one who needed to stop and remember. And that's just what he did. 🥺

And then, only then, was he able to calm down, remember himself, remember what Tom would want him to do. He wasn't handling this the same way he'd handled Longclaw's death. He was turning into exactly what Shadow had become. The horror at realizing what he'd nearly become, what he'd almost done, set in.

He made the right choice in the end because of that. Just like Shadow did in the games. Just like he later did here, too. But Shadow was able to have "redemption" of sorts in this version, not because of some talk, but because he saw the example in Sonic, right in front of him.

We know what happened next, I'm not gonna go much into it. But seeing this whole side of Sonic, the side that just barely slipped out in the last movie, was so, so fascinating. I love how each movie continues to explore him as the main character, in a different way. This one probably got me crying the most. I cried even as I wrote this post and put more pieces together. The more I think about it, the more I love it. 🥹😭💙💛❤️

"Oh, no need to help, dear! I can do it by myself."

The nice 50 year old-ish lady told you not to worry about her fish pond. You're a second year high school student who just got accepted in an exchange program, and now you’re finally here, in Hawkins, Indiana.

"Oh, don't worry, Mrs. Byers, I can handle it pretty well… My dad also has a fish pond on the back of our house.” You tried to reassure her that it’s totally fine for you to take care of it. Remembering that she can already be categorized as an old lady, it would be very cruel of you if you let her clean it by herself.

“You are truly an independent and hardworking young lady… Reminds me of myself back in the old days.” You can see her smile while looking to a blank space, probably reminiscing herself back when she was younger.

You chuckled at her compliment, slightly thanking her for saying something you don’t hear everyday, especially from your parents. Instead of saying anything further, you smiled at her before continue cleaning her fish pond.

“Please, dear. Feel free to look around.”

Ever since you got here last week, you never had the courage to explore her gigantic house. Not because it has spirits living on it, of course not! (hope so) But, it’s more like you don’t wanna disturb her peace and you don’t wanna look like you’re being nosy about her personal stuff. Yet, from the first step you took on this house, you literally fell in love. The vintage architecture, big pillars on her yard, it seems impossible for an old lady to live her by herself.

Sure, her house only has two levels, but the interior of her house is just mesmerizing. The details and antique things in this place are remarkable. If only you don’t have to control yourself, you’d already touch every single one of her things.

The only thing that you did here was to go to school and spend time with her a lot. You went shopping together, clean the house, do regular house chores, watch cheesy rom-coms or comedy movies (which you surprisingly also love). The whole week basically already felt comfortable for you.

You always loved old people. You get to hear their stories, adventures, and all what happened in the past. It seems… Very interesting, so different with what you have now. And one of the things you love about Mrs. Byers, is that she talks about her youth days a lot in the 80s! You, as a person who is a big fan of the 80s always had an open jaw when listening to how beautiful life seemed to be in the 1980s, especially in the year 1985.

“These are some beautiful watch collections, Mrs. Byers!” You looked through a cardboard box full of old clocks and watches inside.

“Those were my parents’. I was planning to give those to the antique store since I don’t really use it. But you can look around there if you’d like, dear! If one catches your eye, please do take it before people put a price on it in the antique store.”

The feeling of knowing that you can look at these old watches and actually bring them home without needing to let out a single dollar made you feel euphoric. But, you still need to help her cleaning up this messy attic, not wanting her to get asthma from breathing the dusty air so much.

“Maybe I’ll do it later, Mrs. Byers. I gotta clean these up first.”

Mrs. Byers looked at you, giving you the ‘I swear this kid never rests’ look. Yet, she just smiled. And you know deep down she’s really happy to have someone to be her company and to help her around since her husband died a year ago.

“If you need me, I’ll be downstairs, okay dear?” Mrs. Byers excused herself to go back to her room, probably knitting since it’s what she’s been doing at home (as far as you know). She left you there in the attic, wandering through her watch collection.

As you were diving through it, you took pictures of every single watch, especially the ones that has unique details in it. But one caught your eye… A golden pocket watch. It has golden chains, chained to the top of the watch. Tiny details surrounding the face of the watch. Since it looks pretty old, it was also covered in dust and rust, including the roman numbers that tell the time inside.

You made the watch dangle around your arms, admiring it’s old, yet timeless beauty. You started turning the clock around, seeing if it still works or not. Sadly, it’s broken. You immediately thought of the 80s just by looking at it, imagining how Mrs. Byers would always wield it and brought it everywhere she goes, even though you know this watch must’ve came from an older time… Most likely to be from the 30s or the 40.

Since you liked that pocket watch so much, you put the chains around your arms, keeping it there as you put back the rest of the watches gently inside the cardboard, not wanting to be irresponsible after Mrs. Byers let you mess around with all of it.

Analyzing the metaphorical connection between Squid Game/Round 6 and the movie Parasite.

Before we begin, it is important to know that these two films are different metaphors for social inequality in South Korea; a social factor that is caused by:

• Gender discrimination: women receive 36% less than men;

• Racial inequality: immigrants face difficulties.

• School bullying: 15% of students report it.

• Stress and mental health problems.

Now let's analyze the metaphors of the two works and how they resemble each other, despite the different ways in which criticism is portrayed in both.

SQUID GAME:

The metaphor in the form of social criticism shows us how human beings subject themselves to absurd situations when there is no other option, and how those above the lower class have control over that class and over society (politicians, millionaires, businessmen, among other important positions).

Here are the points I gathered to write my review:

• Games portray the need, fear about society and (de)valuation of life. Players both value and devalue their lives as they choose to continue playing, even when they see people die, because the combination of the need for money + greed (this greed that equals the lower class to the upper class, showing us that some of those who are above were also inferior), does not make them want to stop because the world out there will humiliate them, devalue them and kill them little by little, just as it happens in the game.

• No matter how superior you think you are to someone, whether it's due to intellectual, social or racial level, within the game everyone is humiliating themselves equally because they need the same thing: money (representing not only the literal money that the lower class needs, but also social validation, the minimum of respect, to be taken seriously).

• The real world is no different from the game: politics controls society as the boss and guards control the game; work (or lack thereof), represented by sadistic games, is necessary to obtain money and social validation.

• Bad people are just as sadistic as the controllers of society and the game. Since, in both seasons, bad people were responsible for sowing chaos among the players, killing each other before the games even started. People in society don't care if you need it as much as they do (even if they are in the same social class as you), they will walk all over you if they have the opportunity.

The sadism of the upper class.

The controllers watch the players kill each other and are killed during the games with class and tranquility, not lifting a finger to help. The villainy of the series represents how those above do nothing to change (even though they could),because they don't want to give up their money, because they don't care, because they've been consumed by greed for a long time.

• We are > always < being controlled by someone above us.

In both Season 1 and Season 2 we see 456 approaching and becoming attached to Player 001 (the first being the old man, and the second being Inho), both Bosses of the game infiltrated among the lower class. I observed this detail as a suggestion that there will ALWAYS be someone above controlling those below, even people in our daily lives. It is unconscious, but it is a form of submission; we obey those above us because it is moral to follow the rules. From teachers above students, parents above children, to bosses above employees and politicians above citizens.

I am passionate about the way film directors manage to fit these criticisms in such creative metaphors. It's like in The Matrix; which suggests that we all live in a control system, with the metaphor of Artificial Intelligence. It's so different from Squid Game, but at the same time the same.

In 2022, Lee Jung-Jae won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor for Squid Game. The series received 14 nominations in total and won 6 (including Best Director).

Lee Jung-Jae made history by becoming the first Asian man to win this award.

PARASITE:

The metaphor here is less "fantastical" than in Round 6, leaning towards the more realistic side of the critique.

A poor family is hired to work in the house of a rich family, but it is not as simple as it seems. Tired of extreme poverty and a difficult life, The family devises a plan to gradually infiltrate the wealthy family one by one, until they are all working in the house.

They begin to take over the wealthy family's house as time goes by, but the film wanders through situations where social criticism masterfully made by Bong Jon-Hoo, it surprises and terrifies us in the face of such inequality.

The place where the poor family lives is well below the streets above, and they have to go down very long stairs to get there (it is interesting because it metaphorically shows how the lower class is so far below, that they live in a place where the sun barely touches).

At a certain point in the film, the poor family finds a man in a terrible situation, living hidden below the house of the rich family (once again, there is always someone below, even below the lower class. It can always get worse), and when they find this man, the mother of the poor family does not even listen to him, picks up the phone and says she is going to call the police; this scene suggests a lack of empathy that can be present even in the most needy. She did not even think that she herself could be in that man's place if she had not gotten a job in the house of the rich; she forgot that she is also inferior, but, as I said, there will always be someone worse off; and that is when people feel superior, even knowing that they are not.

Just like in Squid Game, in Parasite we see social inequality represented in two uncomfortable, different but equal ways.

Players vs. Bosses / Poor vs. Rich = Us (society, lower class) vs. Them (politics, industries, corporations, digital influences, upper class)

Below = Players / Poor family

Above = Bosses (001, guards) / Rich family

Metaphor: poverty, financial need/validation/respect = Games / Job in the rich house

Metaphor: politics, industries, companies, millionaires = Boss/001/guards / Rich family

The series and film have been widely awarded and recognized for their metaphorical perfection and cinematic work.

In 2020, Bong Jon-Hoo won the Oscar for Best Director, Best Film, Best International Feature Film and Best Original Screenplay for Parasite.

There is a lot of xenophobia behind the industries, so it is important to remember and highlight the victory of these great artists. Korean cinema is incredible, but it is undervalued.

also Blue Eye Samurai IS so good. I actually had poor expectations at first but it really surprised me!! (context, my dad is a mixed person with blue eyes. I won't say its not good rep, but we are not starving for blue eyed half asians in media. And honestly I was worried the story would be centered around the white father. But holy shit it was so much more than that. Exceeded my expectations like you wouldn't believe)
