Top: in Super Mario Bros. 3, the Dark Land world map is made out of four separate screens. The third screen has a "darkness" effect whereby only a circular area around Mario is visible. By walking around the map, it becomes apparent that it is filled with skulls, but the full extent of the skulls cannot be seen all at once.
Bottom: if Mario dies in one of the pipe connection screens in this world due to letting the timer run out, and his last save point was in the dark area, the darkness effect will fail to load, making that room bright and allowing a clear look at the fact that it is completely filled with skulls.

i think we can all agree it's a bit of a missed opportunity electronics don't have a "milk socket" you could plug some sort of milk battery into, which would slowly disperse milk into the body of the machine, possibly ruining it.
