sometimes i think about how in my hometown there were four public & one private elementary schools when i was in kindergarten & first grade then they built a new elementary school & combined two of the old ones so from second through fifth grade i went to the new one & then in high school my friend & i were hanging out in our science teacher’s classroom after school one day & i don’t remember why it was brought up but our teacher said “i can guess who went to [new elementary school]” & he guessed all of them (& two extras) & we were like how tf did you know that & he said “y’all typically get higher grades on tests” like i know that environment has an influence on shit like that but hearing/seeing that first hand kinda boggles my mind

I don't normally do Just Characters Swearing, but. ...this kind of wrote itself and then wouldn't leave my head. it comes from both a piece of character-writing advice that has always stuck with me, and also my conviction that Leona is 1000% funnier as a character if his dialogue has to stay G-rated. let Kalim say fuck, but don't let Leona say bastard.

there's this horrible school of attempted literary criticism on here that holds that 1. everything in any given author's work is autobiographical, especially if it seems "real" and 2. those themes seeped into the work subconsciously, revealing something about the author that they're either trying to hide or unaware of themself. it drives me up a wall, since it seems to deny the fundamental skills that make people good writers: the empathy to imagine and portray experiences that one hasn't had oneself and the ability to take one's personal emotional experiences or worldview and fold them, consciously, into the unworked clay of a narrative.
