ok, i cant resist the urge to make a post about it after all, especially since it's related to a post i made prior
one of my favorite moments in trimax is By Far this part in chapter 35
[ID: Two pages from Trigun. The first starts with Wolfwood thinking, "Now that I think 'bout it, it may be one of the major differences between our species." That deep rooted dear I felt on the ship…" He thinks of Vash crying blood and, swearing, wonders, "Is he the one who can save humankind? That monster?" Wolfwood is briefly shown in resolution before someone calls, "Hey, Wolfwood!" and he looks up with surprise.
Vash sits with a smile at the edge of a rooftop, backed by the Fifth Moon and its prominent crater. Vash asks with a smile, "Just coming back now? You're a bit of a night owl, huh?" Wolfwood looks taken aback and wary. End ID]
Right Here. Vash is just sitting there, smiling like normal, but he's got the backdrop of the damage he caused on the moon set Perfectly behind him. it's a glaring reminder to Wolfwood of who exactly he's dealing with here, and that TERRIFIES him.
& the fact that Wolfwood still remembers that moment of crying blood as a moment of true fear. because for all the cheer Vash shows in the average moment, Wolfwood just recently saw him nearly lose control Again (at the Dragon's Nest). the second time he witnessed it, & the third time he would know about.
Vash is a walking atomic bomb with multiple charges. even with how cheerful & kind he is, he's shown Multiple Times that he does not have full control. he is decidedly something different, something Hazardous to humans, and Wolfwood knows this very very painfully.
for all that Wolfwood loves Vash, he is also terrified of him. and at this point in the story, that terror is potent enough to nearly eclipse his affection for Vash.
leading to some of the next most iconic pages:
[ID: The next page starts with Wolfwood standing behind the sitting Vash, his expression hard and the moon bright behind him. Vash seems sad and has one eye open. A close-up focuses on Wolfwood looking down.
Wolfwood thinks, "So easy to pull the trigger. So easy to remove half the problem." Another close-up with bright lighting obscures his face but for one eye. Then Vash turns around curiously and asks, "What's up?" Wolfwood sits behind him and says "Nothin'. Come on. Let's go." Vash seems surprised as Wolfwood scolds, "Don't get yerself tangled up in every little skirmish ya see. It'll be pointless if ya get yerself killed before ya meet him." End ID]
the manga frames it like Vash doesn't know Wolfwood was pointing the gun at him, but I think he did know. he's freakishly perceptive over and over again throughout the story. he HAS to be in order to survive like he has. he'd hear the movement of the gun & sense Wolfwood behind him...
he'd know. i really think he knew.
but he doesn't do anything about it. there is zero fear in his face. he turns to look at Wolfwood curiously, a bit confused, but not afraid. he never once thought that Wolfwood would shoot him. there's full faith and trust there in that moment.
Wolfwood pretends that nothing happened, & Vash lets him. they both move on, not talking about it, because they never talk about Anything of substance like this (not until much, Much later).
overall, it's just such a great example of their relationship's development. Wolfwood's fear & Vash's trust that he won't act on it... it's just. Man.
(EDIT: people have made some good points about how Vash's expression when Wolfwood points the gun at him shows that he probably did know and YEAH that's a good point! & probably why I was so certain he knew lol, I just hadn't realized it myself)
#speculation nation#fanny reads trigun#fanny's trigun analysis#trigun#vashwood#trigun spoilers/#granted a lot of this is personal interpretation. some ppl might assume vash had no clue & like. that'd be a fair assumption#i just think Vash is very very perceptive. and i like to think he knew & just didnt do anything about it#because he never once thought that Wolfwood would actually shoot him#sometimes a friendship can be two buds who sometimes point guns at one another#(read: wolfwood points a gun at vash and Makes vash point a gun at him)#& then they never talk about this Ever <3 very healthy communication between these two for sure#anywyas im still making my way thru the original manga rn in my reread. but here have this moment bc im obsessed with it#might have smth else to talk about too. the geo-plants thing is intriguing me. but i'll make that post later.#EDIT: image descriptions written by princess-of-purple-prose

I'm sorry, but if you call Fanny Price (or any female character) insipid, I don't want to hear anything else you have to say.
#manfield park#jane austen#i just stumbled on this interview with someone who wrote a new retelling of mansfield park#the story as they told it doesn't sound like something i'm interested in#but since they framed it as a family saga i thought maybe their thoughts on the novel would be worthwhile#not far into the interview they say that their version of fanny isn't as pious and insipid as the original#like she doesn't need to lie down after a short walk#and first off the word insipid is an immediate turn-off#because it just seems like the word everyone uses for any quiet or anxious character and it feels like a personal attack#but also 'needs to rest after a short walk' DO YOU MEAN CHRONIC ILLNESS??#JANE AUSTEN CENTERS HER STORY AROUND A DISABLED CHARACTER#AND YOU THINK THAT NEEDS TO BE ERASED???#YOU THINK A DISABLED CHARACTER IS UNWORTHY TO BE THE CENTER OF A STORY??#shame on you! dishonor on your book! dishonor on your cow!

I find the detached, disinterested style of the last few chapters of Mansfield so fascinating. Austen stepping into the text to tell us casually that yes, Fanny would have eventually married Henry and loved him. but whoops, fooled ya, that’s not the story she’s telling. Edmund falls in love with Fanny in a hasty summary paragraph and Henry gets nothing, you lose, good day sir
#it’s weird because she’s like ‘this was nearly a Mary/Edmund Fanny/Henry endgame!’#but she’s been slowly rehabilitating Henry for almost half the book#and she has NOT been doing that for Mary. quite the opposite Mary just keeps getting worse#you’re half convinced that Henry could have been a decent sort of person under Fanny’s influence#but you’re not at ALL convinced that Edmund could have done anything with Mary#cate reads

book runs based on tv shows are usually mediocre at best, like star trek, torchwood, doctor who, etc etc, but i would give anything to get a book run of the BBC Ghosts hotel i need to know what shenanigans those guys get up to in there
#bbc ghosts#bbc ghosts spoilers#six idiots#i think a hotel would be so fun for them#like enrichment#absolutely nothing that happens in there matters in the slightest but they all care so much about everything so really#the weight of any hypothetical plot does not matter#a short story series for example would be great#give me 5 pages of the captain deriding robin about the mouse family he follows and then stalking off to go watch his ants#give me 20 pages of fanny and julian watching something unsavoury going down in one of the rooms only to discover they were wrong#and actually what's happening is totally innocent#give me 15 pages of julian battling for TV remote control with a guest who can't figure out why the remote is malfunctioning#give me fanny accidentally getting in a teenager's selfie and the teen facetiming with her friends about the haunted room she's stuck in#while her parents are on this dumb golf trip#and kitty is jealous that fanny is getting all the attention because this is supposed to be girls night with the teens she's decided#captain and julian watching golfers out on the green#thomas cooing over a blossoming romance and subsequent breakup like its his new personal soap opera#pat sitting in on games out on the lawn and getting way too into it prompting julian to start making bets with him on lawn darts#fanny snooping in guests' luggage and being scandalized by perfectly normal things she considers risque#give a book deal to ben and larry they'd have a ball with it i just know it

Who doesn't like Edmund??????? HOW can they not like Edmund?????????? He's the best of the Bertrums!!!!
Well, to be fair, being the best of the Bertrams is not too difficult, lol.
But yes, a LOT of people dislike Edmund, like, probably the majority of the Austen community. I agree!!! It’s so frustrating!!!
Like, Darcy insulted Elizabeth’s family to her face and actively separated her sister from the man she loved, Captain Wentworth ignored Anne’s existence and courted other girls in front of her on purpose, Edward was engaged to another woman while courting Elinor, and we give them passes, but we come down so hard on Edmund for *checks notes* letting Mary ride on Fanny’s horse for too long.
Yes yes, obviously there was more to that incident, but the point still stands—Edmund has committed far less grievous mistakes than most Austen heroes, but he’s the most hated. Why is this??
There’s a couple reasons for this, I think: we never get to see him actually in love with Fanny, and, unlike most Austen heroes, he never gets to perform any sort of grand gesture to make amends for his mistakes. We know that he does fall in love with Fanny and that these amends must have been made (especially seeing how quick he is to apologize to Fanny when he realizes he's been neglecting her in other places in the novel), but Austen deliberately chooses to narrate these events without actually giving them to us directly. Admittedly, this frustrates me, but I understand why: Mansfield Park is not a love story. There is a romance in the story, but that isn't what the narrative is fundamentally concerned with--the narrative is fundamentally concerned with Fanny's development and strength of character independent of (you might even say in spite of) the other characters in the novel. Unlike Pride and Prejudice or Emma, Fanny's character development is not incited by the actions of the hero (which, to be clear, I don't have any issue with--Mansfield Park just has a different narrative formula). Fanny overall is what you might call a static character--not in the sense that she is not fleshed-out or well-developed, but in that she does not go through a lot of character change. Rather, instead of her arc being about changing to become a better person, her arc is about her struggle to remain the good person that she is in spite of outside pressure to change to become more like the rest of the world. (For a really good example of a static character arc, look no further than Captain America!) It's not that Fanny doesn't go through any character growth whatsoever, she definitely does, but this growth overall roots her more deeply into what she believed before, rather than inciting change. The more I think about it, actually, the more it seems like Mansfield Park is a typical "Austen" story told from the perspective of the love interest.
It is actually Edmund who goes through the more dynamic character arc that we associate with most protagonists--which is why I've been thinking for ages that a retelling of Mansfield Park from his perspective could be REALLY interesting. Because told from his perspective, Mansfield Park undoubtedly becomes a love story where it did not hold that status previously. And Edmund would make such a great protagonist!!! There is SO MUCH about his character that I find absolutely fascinating. He of course has a very strong moral compass, which is something I've always admired him for, and despite his attraction to Mary and delusion about her character, is never once even tempted to change his profession from a clergyman to earn Mary's love. We really don't give Edmund enough credit for coming out so well-adjusted and morally upright as he did, coming from a family like the Bertram's. He is also fundamentally very kind, but what's so interesting about him is that he is not, though he certainly tries, always the most attentive. He certainly never neglects Fanny on purpose and is horrified when he finds out that he has, but the fact still remains that he is not the most emotionally perceptive (I'm actually very tempted to draw some parallels between him and Catherine Morland here). Edmund possesses a lot of book-smarts, but is somewhat lacking in social intelligence--or, for lack of a better term, street-smarts. I don't know what textual evidence there is to support this, but I've always had the impression that up until the beginning of the novel, Edmund hadn't had much experience mingling in society, given how as soon as he finished college he was brought straight home to manage Sir Bertram's estate while he was away in Antigua. Regardless of whether or not this is actually the case, it's clear that Edmund is a terrible judge of character despite how morally upright he himself is, which is absolutely fascinating to me. (Again! Catherine parallels!!) Fanny makes a direct contrast to Edmund in this regard--she does not possess the same book knowledge or have the advantage of the education that he had, but she is, though unconsciously, the most emotionally intelligent person in the room and the best judge of character in the entire book.
It is this contrast, but with their shared beliefs about the world and what is right and good, that cements my belief in how well-suited they are for each other. Edmund does not challenge Fanny to change, but Fanny's steadfastness of character does motivate Edmund to change--when he realizes that she perceived what sort of person Henry Crawford was all along and that she was right to refuse him, it exposes to him just how blind he is to the character of others. Edmund basically goes through the same sort of arc that Austen's heroines go through, but this time the roles have been reversed! IT'S JUST SO COOL
Anyway, sorry for rambling. TL;DR, I'm not going to try to convince you that Edmund Bertram is on the same level as Mr. Knightley or Mr. Tilney, but PLEASE examine him critically before you write him off as trash, because he really isn't.
#blorbo from my regency novels#sorry this took so long i wanted to be able to give a full reply#i held myself back from giving my take on the edmund x mary shippers because that would've been a LOT#but suffice it to say i hate it given how much mary fundamentally disrespects his profession and therefore his goals in life#could she have changed her mind someday? maybe but it would take a lot of work#fanny is better for him in the end because their beliefs about the world are so aligned and she actually respects him as a person#which is. you know. why she's the one he ended up with#(also i feel like people would be MUCH more offended by her attacking ed's chosen profession if it were literally anything other than him#going into the clergy. just saying)#mansfield park#edmund bertram#fanny price#jane austen#edmund bertram defense squad
