Through the last six months, most of my focus has been limiting stress. With two businesses closed due to covid, my dog dying, etc. stress has been off the charts. To that end, I have been really dialing back how intensely I work out. Been training intuitively by how I feel, shorter workouts, less volume, lower percentages, small number of lifts. The first 3 months of quarantine I only did pullups, kettlebell presses, kettlebell swings, and Turkish Get Ups. The last 2 months, squats, bench, and thick grip deadlifts. If I felt tired or worn out, I didn’t lift. Most of it very sub maximal with very low volume. The air quality has kept me pretty mellow for the last week as it really affects my breathing which sucks. To that end I hit some singles today and easily maxed out all the weight I brought home. Felt good, and felt like I had a significant amount still in the tank at least on the squat (didn’t even wrap my knees). Bench ended at my comfort zone for solo lifting, not trying to get crushed 🤣🤣🤣. Today was my first ever #crossfit competition. I made the hike back overnight from Chicago to compete with my original #crossfitfamily @crossfitkalamazoo. I had a blast and everyone did so good! Do you ever feel like you’re not really making any progress in the gym? Even though you are going regularly and staying consistent? Here’s a few things it could be: It might be that you’re not working hard enough. Or maybe you’re working too hard! This is why it is a good idea to get a coach. A standard cookie cutter plan may have you doing too much volume, or not enough, and volume needs to be programmed well and according to you in order for you to get the best results from it. Too much volume can prevent gains, too little can limit them. Another factor is progressive overload. Essentially this means continually progressing in some way in your exercises. That could be increasing the weight week on week, and even set to set, or it could mean getting more reps out at the same weight week on week, or improving your technique (remember how I bang on about filming your sets to check form?). There are lots of different variables you could choose to focus on for progressive overload, but the point is that if you’re not progressing SOMETHING, you won’t be seeing improvements. You need to make it challenging. Don’t stay in your comfort zone with a certain weight and don’t simply go through the motions. Showing up isn’t enough, you gotta be challenging yourself. As an additional thing to consider, you might not be eating enough protein, or just enough calories overall. If you’re eating too little, it will be much harder to see progress in terms of strength or muscle gain. This is why with my clients I like to have them eating MORE, not less. It can be scary at first, but once you start seeing the changes to your energy and your performance and your body, you realise eating more won’t make you gain fat if you’re doing it right. When the hubs wants a date night (well literally asked like a little kid) and it's leg day too... 🙄🙄🙄😒😒😁🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ So cheat meal and movie first, then leg day. How do you make sure??? Movie theater is RIGHT next door to the theater and you go in gym clothes 😎😁🤣😂 Also, this movie was freaking awesome. I love Rambo but this painted a very real picture of cartel and female trafficking. It's very graphic but I didn't find it distracting or that it took away from the film. A lot of people are loosing their minds about it 🤦‍♀️😒🤦‍♀️😒 and my say to them is go to a cop or fed who has worked these cases and see how close they come. Yes at the end when it's all Rambo it's very movie but leading up to it is very real. I love food. No ifs ands or buts about it. My breakfast fit perfectly into my meal plan and I didn't even consider eating anything else.
