If you collect books like I do, what is the oldest book in your collection? I don’t have a lot of money to invest in this hobby but I have several books published in the 1930s but they are not the oldest book. The oldest book I have been able to obtain is a collection of writings by Henry David Thoreau simply called, Letters To Various Persons. And the title is accurate in its contents. It is…

ok this answer is about to get a little out of hand LMFAO

so an extremely quick rundown of the premise is we first meet martin, who has taken to keeping a diary due to some Unusual Happenings for which he would like to be able to give some sort of proof. the happenings in question are that, despite his being a lowly employee of a butcher, he has been contacted by the Incredibly Reputable Magnus Institute and, seemingly, been offered employment for much more pay than what he's currently getting, so it's a no-brainer right!!!

so from there things very vaguely follow the shape of canon, with a couple of pretty key distinctions which will be mostly explored at some point, but the biggest distinction is probably the fact that it appears jon a) has some beholding abilities already, and b) has a relatively strong grasp on the entities and what they are/what they mean. but will this be enough to circumvent the OLD-SCHOOL EYEPOCALYPSE!!! (... maybe)

also i asked a couple of pals which quotes would be good to share and they gave two distinct answers however they were from the same section, so... i will give both!! but in the interest of this post not being do u love the colour of the sky length. here is a cut.

so for context, early on in the story jon takes martin on a work outing to lancashire where they visit a mrs laura popham for a follow-up interview after a written statement she submitted to the institute regarding a subterranean misadventure. martin transcribes this interview and is, at the time, unaware that he is observing something of a Feeding Session. one of the recommended quotes from the interview is:

The lady did not object as Mr Sims covered her trembling hand with his own.

“Go on, madam,” he said.

As though compelled, her words poured out in a tumbling stream.

“Then it was close enough that I could see the hand holding the light—or—or, I think, perhaps, the hand was the light. It glowed, like a figure in a stained-glass window at sunset. But the skin was pale and sickly, like death. The fingernails were long and thick and yellow, and—and when it was close enough that I could have reached out and brushed it with my fingertips, I saw—please, sir, it’s dreadful—it’s simply too dreadful.”

Mr Sims blinked silently.

Mrs Popham inhaled, her face now red with her tears. I am sure Mr Sims will have much to say about it later, but I stood in order to offer the lady my own handkerchief, my heart aching at the sight of her despair. Insensible to my presence, she took it, and pressed it to her streaming eyes, and without looking at my employer, I returned to my transcription.

“I saw,” said the lady as she wept. “It—under those horrid fingernails there was—something thick, and fleshy, and red, like—like fresh meat. I do not—I cannot think of it without trembling, and—and when it had almost seized upon my throat, I saw, twisting in the draught from my own breathing, I saw—I saw a clump of bay-red hair, curled around those horrid, pale fingers—it was just the same colour as my sister’s hair, and I knew—I knew, then, what had befallen her.”

The lady wept in earnest for a moment, and Mr Sims used his cane to return to his full height as she mastered herself.

“And?” he asked, simply.

“And I screamed, sir. I screamed until I tasted blood in my throat and my voice gave out.”

following this, through the magic of playing fast and loose with how geography works, jon and martin go to death's head hole to take a squizz (fun fact, death's head hole wasn't "officially discovered" until 1889, and this story is set in 1882-3, so, uh, jon just Knows which cave to go to don't worry about it) and also for jon to tell martin a bit of What's Going On Here:

“But surely it strikes you as curious that Mrs Popham lived to tell the tale, as it were?”

“Naturally, sir.”

I watched as my employer smoked in thoughtful silence.

“What do you make of it?” he asked. “Being a reasonable man, what do you think is the most rational explanation for her survival?”

I glanced uncertainly towards the gorge, frowning.

“I suppose it is possible that the geography has changed over time, sir?”

Mr Sims nodded his head. “Indeed. That is possible.”

Suspecting that this was supposed to be some sort of lesson, I did not say any more, waiting expectantly for his rejoinder. 

“Do you think it sounds plausible that somewhere that was here when Mrs Popham and her sister embarked on their misadventure is no longer here?”

I frowned.

“Sir?”

He finished his cigarette, extracting his case again and grinding the butt into the inside of the case to extinguish it, leaving it in there before depositing the whole lot back into an interior pocket of his riding-coat.

“Suppose,” he said didactically, “That there was a force—an entity, if you will—that was able to manifest something that seemed like a physical space on the earth, but that was not, in fact.”

I nodded in cautious silence, as—using, in my head, the thought of a genie in a lamp from fairy stories—I could, at least experimentally, accept this premise as he stated it. 

“And suppose,” he continued, “That this… this entity-as-place had put itself in a particular location in hopes—as much as something with no will and no brain can hope—of ensnaring prey.”

“Human prey?”

“Human prey,” said Mr Sims, a satisfied sort of smile curling his lips. “Indeed, Blackwood. And, when the entity has consumed its fill, as it were, what would be the profit of remaining in that place and risking either discovery or running into another creature of its kind?”

“None, sir?”

His teeth were bared in a grin that had some sort of incisive edge to it, like the smile of a predatory creature. “Very good, Blackwood,” he said, with something like pride in his tone. “Excellent, in fact.”

I will not deny the swelling of pleasure in my chest. I returned his smile. “Thank you, sir.”

now that it's the next day and im less annoyed, two things i thought was interesting in the mexican adaptation--

when the gaslighting arc starts, lety's like 'yeah we should go back to omar's place' and fernando, instead of being excited about it, he's scared bc she had told him various times she didn't want to bc of 'guilt'. so he's in the bathroom pacing, worried bc 'this isn't like her'. which i thought was funny.

when they go to the event and she tells him she needs to leave bc someone came to get her, he assumes its her dad and he immediately is like 'i'll talk to him' and she says 'no , it's tomas' and he grabs her hands and she pulls back and says 'ppl can see' and he says 'i dont care'. she insists she's leaving and he can't make her stay bc they're not at work. but he doesn't care and drags her away.

that is as 'dark' as the scene gets. bc the next scene its back to light hearted comedy where he's flirting with her again. they really don't want to go there with him (making him crazy), which is disappointing.

"50 different plays by almost as many different playwrights is a massive undertaking in which each vignette varies in tone from the one before it.  The actors playing the characters do not change from play to play; this forces the performers to be as comfortable and convincing with farce as they are playing tragedy.  It is also fascinating to contemplate the mental and emotional gymnastics that each performer of The Bats (the resident acting company of The Flea) must have undergone to ensure that each character maintains the same internal psychological throughline when they appear in different plays by very different authors.

Dillon’s beautifully delicate, white-haired devil is one of the show’s most complex figures. Watching them evolve from nuanced philosopher to diabolical heavy to world-weary cynic, depending on the vignette, is fascinating.  The narrative speeds its way through the Bible. Highlights include Madeleine George’s surprisingly feminist take on the Adam and Eve story; Hwang’s marvelously urgent Cain and Abel tale, which posits the first murder as a story of vengeance against a capricious God; and Mallery Avidon’s whimsically horrifying tale of Noah’s Flood, which also entails the deaths of everyone who didn’t make it aboard the Ark.

The third act deals with Christ’s resurrection and humanity’s fate at the Day of Judgment, and includes a series of plays set in modern times, as well as God’s final words to Lucifer, Jesus, and to us.  The show’s final Day of Judgment coda by Jose Rivera is an essay of forgiveness and unexpected love."

Easy Action Item! Help Wildland Firefighters from getting a 50% pay cut!

Hey everyone, I have a quick and easy action item that could make a HUGE difference going forward.

Wildland Firefighters are currently facing a MASSIVE pay cut, and by massive I mean up to 50%. Yes. Fifty. Percent.

WF pay has been an issue basically forever, but for awhile the government has been kicking the can down the road with various "retention bonuses," but those are set to expire soon and if a permanent solution isn't passed, firefighters are screwed, and so is every single person and business that exists in the wildland urban interface. We need our firefighters more than ever, and right now they need US to help get this passed.

I'm reading through some old issues of Transvestia (a bimonthly magazines for the heterosexual-male transvestite community from the 60s through the 80s) and one issue in 1979 mentions a convention happening for members of the "paraculture", which is not a term I've heard used before.

It's also interesting that there's a clear distinction being made: this is for the heterosexual crossdressers. I'm so used to the modern bullshit where people are trying to separate the T from the LGB, it's slightly weird to see that back then it was more about keeping the G separate from the T? Or at least these T.

But then again this magazine started nearly a decade pre-stonewall. Things were Very Fucking Different for queer people in the US.

Also, there's an amusing bit on the bio of the editor, Virginia Prince: at one point she got in legal trouble for obscenity, because she was exchanging explicit letters with another trans* person. Part of her probation was that she wasn't allowed to crossdress, but her lawyer asked for an exemption "for the purpose of educational presentations".

Sorry ma'am, you can only wear that skirt if it's got educational content.

* I didn't just mean "trans*", it was also a footnote: so this is far enough back that the meanings of various trans-words hadn't settled yet. Transvestite was being used for a lot of people who we'd later call transsexual or transgender. Virginia Prince also used the term "femmiphile" at times because she thought the term "transvestite" had been corrupted by it's association with transsexuals/transgender people. Fun trans history stuff.

I think that nowadays we are very aware of love languages, and to be honest, the topic has attracted my attention for a long time. I decided to make this post in which I connect some placements with the 5 love languages.

Before we start, what are love languages? Where does this theory come from?

In 1992, a book written by Gary Chapman was published, which established the five love languages ​​that we express both for friends and couples [in general loved ones]. i think asanoya is so annoying bc nobody can convince Asahi that Noya likes him. Like full stop. okay okay but I think arankita is *very classic* in that Aran compensates for his crush by over-supporting Kita. so like the whole team gets super annoyed bc Aran wont risk disagreeing with him, is always offering to do extra work, is generally just sucking-up really badly and the twins suffer the most for this bc Aran used to just ignore their antics but now he's super annoyingly on them all the time to try and impress Kita

kuroken is a little different. Yaku asks Kuroo every single day if he's asked Kenma out yet. Lev asks Kenma if he has a crush on Kuroo every chance he gets. Fukunaga gives them a wink when they leave practice to walk home together. This is the only pairing in which the team is the irritant pre-relationship and then post-relationship everyone loses interest and moves on.

Wait does Tom saying Audrey needs to pay child support for Zoe mean she needs to pay Andre, or did Tom adopt Zoe to have an extra barrier between Chloe and Marinette?

It's both a little more simple than that, and a little more complicated, too. Essentially when Tom decided he was going to take Chloe to court for her various bullshit, he decided to look into what other shit her family might be hiding, in the hopes of adding more pressure.

(In this AU at least, I really couldn't find confirmation in any real sources) Zoe is an illegitimate child Aubrey had while in New York, and since she's such an influential person, the father figure decided to settle out of court, as trying to wrench something like child support payments or any sort of supplemental care from an asshole who's also a millionaire seemed impossible. Tom decided to make contact with Zoe and her dad in the hopes of essentially double-teaming the Mayor's family.

It's technically how Zoe and Marinette met in this AU.

A sort of "butterfly effect" (hehe) happens when Tom uses Nooroo to gather information for both their cases, leaving these two to bond on and off. Marinette at her core is still very, very wary, (as this is during the mourning process, Sabine had passed away recently during this time) but she's also kind, which strikes a chord with Zoe, who's constantly changing facades to try and appeal to those around her. It's hard to change yourself to be what someone wants if they never let slip what they want.

Because of this, we're not going to see Zoe really in this AU, as when she eventually heads back to New York with her dad, her time with Marinette has helped her try to establish her own personality with her own wants. Hanging out with a mysterious, kind baker girl who's overworked but still makes time for you does a lot for a baby lesbian, and she manages to make and keep friends.

She does send Marinette letters and emails though, and they text on and off - Zoe still harbors a crush on her, but to Marinette, Zoe is just a good friend : )

Honoring Liam Payne: A memorial across time and space

As we continue to process the heartbreaking news of Liam’s passing, I’ve created this tumblr as a space where we can come together and remember him.

Several of you, including some anons, suggested the idea of holding an online memorial, especially for those who can’t attend the services being held in various cities. I believe this is a beautiful way to honor him and support one another.

I’ll be posting more details on Monday, as it’s quite late now and I’ll be travelling tomorrow to attend one of the memorials. But I wanted to get this blog up and running to share a date and a way for us to contribute.
