Depression had you caged, shackled to the memories...the all-consuming sensations of horror and disgust. The very same that were forced upon you, that iced all your muscles twelve hellish months ago. Twelve! And yet, the nightmares refused to cease. Every evening, you battled demons most powerful and foul, acquiring scar after scar after scar. If you stumbled, if you lay down your weapon or lost...could you really be faulted? If this was Heaven's retribution, a cleansing of your contaminated, sinful body, then...was it not misguided? Surely a void replaced the evidence against you?

Blame should never have befallen you! This child, despite his mask of innocence, attested to humanity's ugliest side. Your heart was unravelling - you needed him, as an extension of yourself, as someone to cherish, but...you didn't want him. He wasn't the product of consent. He was loathsome...and a burden. He was so young, so dependent.

Casting him to the mercy of the streets would be more than a mere violation of morality. You already felt criminal - convicted on thoughts and false claims, serving a life sentence in the bowels of Hell. There was an escape, of course. Although...it wasn't accompanied by a light, or the gentle touch of a loved one. No...this escape was advertised as selfish, shameful...weak. And maybe so. Maybe life's greatest demand was the forgoing of happiness. But...to such an extent seemed excessive, and deliberately cruel. You shouldn't have been so dirty, so broken...an embarrassing stain on your family's name.

A single mother. A victim. A failure.

Plagued with flashbacks that favoured spontaneity above calculation, you carved miserable little lines on to your arms. Nobody knew - not your son, nor the Avengers...nor even Loki. They all harboured some form of trauma, however deep-rooted, and so...they had no need for your sob story. Who would care for someone so violated? Someone so...afraid? Your mind, weakened by fatigue and chronic worry, was simply too weak to resist those thoughts, and all hope had been drained from your heart. Why should you be tethered to life, if only for your child? Should you instead seek liberation, peace...joy? Decency discouraged it, but pain stood its ground.

With your dignity in shambles, your disowning, your binging...nothing felt right anymore! Nothing felt...clean. Loki had noticed, observant as he was. Here, sequestered within the walls of the Avengers' Compound, he was the closest to a friend...maybe even more.

No, no, no! I can't think like that! He's a man! A man! I shouldn't even be going near him anymore! Why, oh god...why is he the only one I'm not afraid of? The only one who can comfort me when I break? I can't...! I haven't even told him about...about...Well, I haven't told anyone! They all just think I slept with someone recklessly! And now...now I'm tainted, unlovable! This is...it's all my fault...I should have defended myself. I should have done something! Anything! Why...why did I freeze...? Why? Why?! Why?!!

Loki understood mental anguish and the torture of dissimilarity, as his birth-rights. Perhaps that was reason enough for your breathing to even, in his embrace. It had taken moths to allow such a privilege, and Loki's persistence, how his voice quivered as he begged to help you in any form...

You, whom he held so very dear...

You might have assumed his affections romantic, once upon a time. Yet...no longer. An ailment had struck you - one that rendered both eyes and ears ignorant to his double meanings, his implications...his love. You couldn't process them over the fear and paranoia. Didn't all relationships entail force, and...activities of a sexual nature? You never wanted to experience that again. Never! So, while sleep washed over the Compound, you crept to the kitchen, intent on expanding your waistline evermore. That your size may, to some, be cause for revulsion, had never previously occurred. It was only when the words danced on the tongue of that godforsaken man...

Eat, eat more! Who cares if you're sick? Keep eating! He said...he said that excess was unattractive. So - so maybe he won't...maybe I won't be...again...?

It had been dominance play, a show of superiority.

Loki would never steal something so sacred, unless you willed it.

He was a gentle soul, manipulated into committing an atrocity, and scorned - by the Avengers, especially. He wouldn't find any resonance in your tale (and you hoped he never would), but as a companion, a patient listener...surely there would be no judgement in his heart? He wouldn't be so quick to abandon you...right? Still, a single utterance of that day, of that most fright-inducing event...required courage far surpassing your own. Maybe...just a word? A sign? Something...?

Lonely was the path you wandered, in spite of Loki's presence. Alone, he failed to drown your demons. He held them under the waves, but they always returned.

You appreciated the effort. Plasters may cover your scars, but they could never heal your heart. Could Loki?...In time? If distorted thoughts of him were enough to ground you in the midst of panic...could he aid your recovery?

He also wondered that. Your deception wasn't half as masterful as you had hoped. Or perhaps you were simply the target of Loki's observations, and therefore came under frequent scrutiny. He had, of course, picked up on the subtle changes in your demeanour - particularly post-pregnancy. He idled at your side, throwing neither intrusive question nor accusation. This was at the behest of his conscience, although he longed desperately to ignore it. He wanted to know...what exactly happened last year, when your transformation began?

Your lips were sealed, but his very essence ached - sorrow, curiosity, love, sympathy and compassion all melding together within him. They ran amuck, refusing any whisper of sleep. His concentration had flown alongside it, rendering him unable to enjoy the book that rested in his palm. It had maintained a decent level of interest until now, but duty called. He would pry open your chamber door, glimpse your ethereal, sleeping form...and finally feel content. If you were strolling through dreamland, then his concern could dissipate. At least for a while. If not...he would discover why.

Loki hesitated outside your door, for if you were truly non-the-wiser, asleep...vulnerable, then a mere survey of yourself and the room would leave, on his tongue, a terrible aftertaste.

But, lo and behold, only your young son slept soundly, in his crib.

Loki was grappled now with a sense of alarm - where in Odin's name were you? And, pray tell...why was your child on his lonesome, cleansing himself of the prior day, in such a frigid room? He was wrought with grief upon recalling your distaste for the babe, and again when he realised there was no option to remove him, bring him to a warmer space, rock him and sing soft melodies...

Loki's primary goal was to find you, and perhaps...coerce you into confessing everything. From a true account of the day that always replayed in your mind, to your innermost feelings and thoughts...he needed to know, and to understand.

He had scoured half the building before laying eyes upon you. However...relief proved elusive. There were an endless number of questions, but none dared to grace the air. Why was your beautiful face stained with tears? Why were you eating, despite looking so sickly? What had troubled you so? And...could he kill it? He was unsure of the proper manner in which to approach you. He had always tread lightly, but complete silence and delicacy were more fortes of his mother. He swallowed down the nerves.

"(Y/n), darling...why aren't you sleeping?"

You startled, eyes bloodshot and a biscuit lodged between your lips. "U-Uh..."

He walked forward. "Is there something weighing on your mind?"

"...No?" This was mumbled, as though credence escaped you.

"My dear, you aren't a skilled liar. Talk to me, please." The heartache nearly tore him apart.

You wouldn't meet his gaze. "I...I can't."

"Please?" Both of your voices cracked, in unison.

Oh god, alright. Okay. This if fine...right? It's fine. I'm fine...Am I? What if I'm not?! I can't tell him just yet! But he looks so upset...I did this! I caused this! Oh god...just stay - stay calm! Calm down...calm down...

A tear trickled down your cheek, then another. "I-I've never...I don't want to - to relive it."

He brought you into a protective embrace. "Then you won't. I swear, by all the beings in the Nine Realms, that I will keep you safe. Please, let me share your burden."

Three sentences. Who was so weak-willed, that a mere three sentences shattered all their defences? You cursed his silver tongue. "(S-S/n)...! He - he's...I didn't...I-I don't want him! J-Just because I didn't fight back...I didn't try to run, he...t-that man, he did...things. To me. And now...now I'm so dirty! I'm disgusting...unclean, weak. B-But...sometimes - sometimes I think it's all in my head. But it isn't! I-It happened, and (S/n)! He's...he's the proof! He reminds me...o-of that..."

Loki froze. "What...?"

"But I-I couldn't - I couldn't tell anyone! They wouldn't...believe me, o-or care! People like me, they don't - this...this doesn't happen! Why...why did this happen?? A-And now...there's (S/n). And every...every minute is Hell! I can't take it anymore...I don't w-want to be here. I don't want to be...to be alive anymore..."

Loki could almost see the threads of rationality thinning. Who would...defile you, hurt you? You were so important, so genuine and...lovely. "I will find this man, and personally deliver his comeuppance. He never deserved your voice, let alone your touch."

"No!" You stiffened in his arms. "Then he'll...he'll come back..."

"If he does, I shall slay him." Yet, Loki made no attempt to leave. Instead, he slipped into a mask of composure, enough to continue speaking without seething. "I apologise...if you thought I wouldn't care. I do - more than you could ever imagine. You are the most stunning creature I have had the honour of meeting, in all my lifetime. I was resolved to spend my days at your side, never professing my love, but after hearing that...I..."

You panicked. "Loki...don't. Please-"

"I know it would be impudent to assume that you could accept me right now, but consider that...I can protect you. I will never let him, or anyone, hurt you again." Loki wiped away your crystalline sadness. "But, please...when you can't see worth or joy in this life...please come to me. I will be here to remind you of your victory - you survived such torture, and delivered a child. You are far from weak, (Y/n)."

Loki's fingers darted along your wrist. He yearned to kiss every scar, every inch of your skin.

Though, he would do nothing without permission. "Now, my dear...let's put these treats away. I would suggest that, henceforth, you eat balanced meals and partake in some fun activities. Perhaps I could read to you, one day? And venturing out for a walk - we can do that together. I...um, hope I'm not overstepping any boundaries. I'm simply thinking of ways to occupy your mind...and your time. You can do these things alone, of course..."

You nodded. "But...you'd - you'd do them with me?"

"I would gladly do anything with you, my love." Loki's words were empty of duplicity.

You were angelic - the only one safe from his lies.

Tale 21: What The Wagon Was For (chapter 8 - On The Radio 8/8 ) part 6. Stories of wizards

no warings

Wool and yarn; Soft threads tied together to keep warm. Self soothing, and expressing creativity. Natural fibers, twirled into textiles that are plush, yet strong. The smell of plastic from the store, that turns into a soft warm sent, as fingers pull it between needles and hooks; As it is transformed into a variety of adornments. Bright as red, or white with dots, thick as rope, or thin like thread; There is no limit to the yarn available to those who seek it. Each loaf, pulled from its inner loop, and wound into balls that seem to always escape, tangle, or go missing. There is always too little, or too much of it around. With a few years practice, a hat can be made in under an hour, with argyle of red and navy, against a confetti white base; Complete with ties and pom-poms. The secret ingredient is time and love; Weaved into something comforting, to be gifted and cherished by someone. A gift of warmth that shows you care.

There is an aesthetic, sensation, smell, and rhythm, in this ancient textile art. Not only calming, but also protective and embellishing. This is why when the couples’ knitting group was over, uncle Cetus kept knitting for the family, while Jupiter kept finding odd amounts of wool in the linen cupboard. While she groaned about the plethora of thread, each autumn, Morgan and the rest of the family, eagerly awaited what Cetus had spent the year crafting for them. Made with love, thought, dedication, and material that costs more then they should. these treasures were meaningful; Because they were made by hand, just for them.

At the end of the semester, some important paperwork finally got processed and aproved. Magic politics can only function within the common laws of a land; And the law prioritizes children in need of homes, over opinionated wizards. Cetus, after struggling to organize finances after his mother died, finally got guardianship over his sister’s precious son. The problem was that Morgan was bonded to Tiberius Gate, living in an ominous tower. With Emilia. Aunt Jupiter was no quitter; She suggested they move into the tower as well. They already lived in town, and Reginia was going to be sent to magic school anyway. She was to be Morgan’s peer support. Though cousins, they were the same age and like siblings. As magical as Pepperidge was, Cetus and Jupiter were perfectly mundane; Born to magic houses, but unqualified to care for young mages. But they were qualified to provide a supportive and loving family, to two growing youths. Cetus was up to the challenge of helping Morgan overcome his trauma, grow, and be himself. Mage or not, Morgan deserved to feel safe after everything he went through.

Thus, Cetus became a great aid in Morgan’s recovery. A male role model, as well as an incredible barrier to the corrupt wizard counsel. Morgan, as the mage of Tiberius Gate, was the way of getting to Pepperidge, and its mages. So, if anyone wanted to get rid of mages there, they needed to control Morgan. But now, they also had to threaten the wellbeing a commoner, who had common law on his side. Cetus knew it. No one was getting their fingers in any peanut butter jar, that would mess up his family’s happily ever afters. Every advance made to contain Morgan’s abilities, was being thwarted by an increasingly close pro mage community, in the tiny town of Pepperidge; From the bus driver, to every teacher and student. If he didn’t feel it, Morgan was completely safe.

After school, mid week, Cetus dropped Morgan off at therapy, and Jupiter would come to pick him up after sessions.

“We have a family meeting, and child welfare check next week. As always, do your best, sport.” Cetus said, ruffling Morgan’s hair. It gave him joy; After almost a year of adoption, and counseling, Cetus could finally touch Morgan without him flinching. Cetus didn’t know what Leo was doing, or if it was even Leo and not life in general; But it was working. He saw Morgan off, before taking Reggie and Emilia home.

“Hey, want to get ice-cream on the boardwalk after dinner?” Emilia said, leaning out the back window. She pulled Morgan over to kiss his check. He nodded, and shyly returned the gesture. Cetus and Reggie tried not to giggle. Morgan slowly walked into the office, checked in, and sat in the depressing psychiatry waiting room.

The fluorescent lights flickered, but at a rate that wasn’t noticeable until there was a migraine. There was the smell of bleach, and old drywall. The receptionist was taking a line of calls, as other families came in, and everyone tried not to look at each other; Because every chair was awkwardly placed facing inward. The walls were mustard, and the chairs plastic. The water cooler bubbled, and the thermostat was set low. Morgan was wearing a forest green, salmon, and black argyle knit sweater, Cetus had made it. Fall had come around, and it was almost his birthday. Morgan reflected on how it had been nine months since his uncle took him in. He loved his uncle. But it wasn’t the same as his mother and father. He hadn’t seen his parent in almost three years.

Leo came to the front, and h led Morgan to his quiet office, while holding Dolly. The light blue walls, smelled of ambiguous air freshener. There was a stack of papers, bulletin of inspirational posters, bowl of fidget toys, and a Yuka in the back. It had started to become comforting and familiar. Morgan relaxed into the chair, holding Icarus on his lap.

“Never seen you so relaxed,” Leo smiled. He took his seat, causing the office chair to squeak. “What would you like to talk about today?” He started. Morgan sat there, looking around the room. He wasn’t feeling anything in particular at the moment. Nothing was really bothering him. Well, maybe the embarrassment and excitement of getting his girlfriend with child WAY too early, or the stress of balancing the world of fey with homework. Also, the upcoming equinox dance at school, and his birthday. Actually, there was too many things to talk about.

“How about you and Emilia, or Cetus? Your aunt and uncle are getting a review from what I hear.” Leo prompted. He had an agenda. Morgan being relaxed was good, but there is always more work to do. Morgan shrugged, like usual.

“How about what you’re feeling right now? I can bring out the chart if you like.”

“I think I’m sad? Out of all things, today I miss mom and dad a lot. They send me paint, books, and clothes, to help my uncle. Mom still knows exactly what I like. Cetus is super nice, and he’s always there for me; He worked really hard to take me in, even with all the magic politics. I appreciate it. Oh, he actually got pulled into some quests, even though he’s common folk! Now I get to graduate early under professor Hara, researching Griminthropes. Aunt Jupiter wants to do a good job too, so she’s-” Morgan mumbled on.

“Stop there. This isn’t about Cetus’s life; This is about built-up trauma, and missing your parents, in spite of your recent happily ever after,” Leo interrupted. “I’m glad you’re confident enough to talk to me, but every conversation is about a fairy tale, not a feeling. You might need to break your habit of relying on magic, legends, and individuals, to avoid problems. I just want you to have a quality of life, feel loved, and care for your yourself. Without relying only on mystical outings or old books. You have the opportunity to do so, and I encourage you to focus on yourself.” Leo suggested. Morgan was leaning inn, looking mildly confused while he listened. At least he had Morgan’s attention.

“I get so frustrated with your avoidance problem. You walk around with so much pain and suffering; And it keeps you up at night. Yet, instead of processing it, and using your support system, you go to the shadow veil, stay silent, act reckless, and harm yourself. Your gratitude is wonderful, but happily ever afters are meaningless if you desert them. Avoidance is not a log term solution, and I don’t expect immediate change. But you need to start embracing things around you in the moment.” Leo said, fizzling out into a whimper, as he tried to stay professional. Morgan looked at him, unblinking.

“Yes, Leo. That’s what the wagon was for.” Morgan said, nodding his head. Leo gave a look of complete defeat. He already knew that.

“So you’re telling me, it’s more then a scheduled avoidance quest? That now it’s something meaningful; A source of fulfillment as a seer. Thus, Honestly Morgan, do you actually still need the wagon to find friends and joy? I don’t think you need to runaway anymore; Everything you need is right here, if you’ll sit with it.” Leo continued. Morgan liked that perspective; It sounded like enjoying life, without sacrificing his dreams. Morgan smiled a bit. The meaningful stories of each object in that wagon, were tales of is growth. That wagon had helped him. But his new life was doing that too. A simple, worn, faded, treasured wagon. In primary colours, the offend the senses. Something that was purchased at a toy store, to carry children on family outings. It is easy to say what the wagon was for, and what that means now. The wagon helped Morgan runaway, and become an accomplished mage. Now the wagon reminds him of good things he experienced, and is for visiting friends.

“Thanks Leo.” Morgan said. “I’m sorry I accidentally mislead you with the wagon. It’s very distracting.”

“Your most welcome, and forgiven. Oh look! We still have thirty minutes left.” Leo laughed. Morgan groaned. He still had to unpack his relationship with his parents with feeling words, now that the wagon was gone.

Hey, friends. I know I haven't been on lately but I haven't gone anywhere. Just been dealing with a lot at the moment. I wanted to take a moment, though, to educate some people about cruelty and toxicity in fandoms as a public service reminder.

I have a good friend whom I met through our shared love of BTS and here recently she was targeted by multiple fandoms for posting reactionary videos to our favorite kpop idols. Someone commented on her video reacting to a Seonghwa photo, saying that she was clearly sexualizing him and how "disgusting" and "creepy" it was for a 37 year old woman to act that way towards an idol. They have come up with excuse after excuse as to why they targeted her, attacking her for any and everything they could imagine, saying things like:

"It's not your age, but the fact that you sexualize them"

"It's just a joke among POC ARMYs, you're overreacting"

"Taehyung hates white people, so you should know your place"

"You're sexualizing minors and that's not okay"

"The legal age in Korea is 20, and he's now 22. He's a new adult, so he's basically still a minor"

And that's not even the half of the things she's been told. People would post their own videos of her, making her look like some pedophile, getting THEIR friends to join in the onslaught of bullying and tear her down.

So, if you have heard or seen anything to do with a TikTok creator by the name of SatinSilver, please check twice regarding what you've heard.

Thus, I give you a few things that everyone should know about my dear friend:

She served in the war against Afganistan, only to protect her country and family

She has four amazing kids, all of whom she takes such great care of and who cherish her more than any teenager loves their parents

She is 37 and all of her fellow kpop friends refer to her as "kpop mama" because she takes such good care of them and looks after each of them

She loves all of her followers and even those who just reach out to her like they were her family

If you have ever mentioned your name to her she will remember and go out of her way to acknowledge you at any point in time

She will stand up for any injustice in a mature manner

She isn't afraid to tell someone like it is if they've done something unacceptable

She is one of the kindest, most supporting, most philanthropic individuals I have ever had the pleasure of knowing

She, AND HER FAMILY, have been the victims of cyber bullying and no matter who you are or where you come from that is unequivocally unacceptable. My dear friend was thrown to the ground and stoned for being attracted to an idol younger than herself. Now, these bullies will say that her age has nothing to do with it, and yet she will still recieve messages and hate speech telling her to look elsewhere because she's so "old".

And here are a few things we should remember as a kpop fan community:

Treat others with respect

We are all joined together by something much bigger than us

We are all important, especially to our idols

There is no room for bullying within our kpop fandoms

There is a difference between standing up for your idols and throwing accusations around like confetti for no apparent reason, other than to cause strife

You are more than allowed to express your indifference for something or someone but that does not give you the right to punish them because they don't agree with you

Just because our skin color may be different, if we are from different countries, when we may not be close to the same age does not give anyone the right to harass you, tease you or make jokes at your expense

When you make a joke be considerate and remember that if the other person isn't laughing can it really be considered a joke?

It simply blows me away that as a community of individuals who love and support groups that stand for equality, friendship, justice and the race to end violence, some of us are still able to and exclusively make it their jobs to pushing others around and directly assaulting them without hearing their story. So please, think twice before accusing someone of something or standing by when someone does just that. We need to remember that words can hurt, and if you're the only one laughing at some joke you made at someone else's expense it is NOT a joke. Let's spread love, support, hope and appreciation, not degradation, spite or hate.

23 & Me

I woke up this morning another year older, 23. A reminder that we all face, that time exists & it’s moving along. Growing up I use to measure my success alongside my age. Wanting to accomplish this by 16, 18 and so on. Always racing against this clock that I felt was representative of my life as a whole. Feeling as if the goals were either far out of reach or had passed me by & that my best years were behind me. I’ve since come to understand that it’s not at all true & while it’s good to have some sort of liability/deadlines behind your goals we are not limited by a date, age, or any other number. We are only limited by ourselves. Reflecting on another year on this planet I wanted to consolidate twenty three lessons I’ve learned thus far. Lessons that don’t necessarily come based upon my age rather experience, interactions, and the world around me has taught me.

1. We can only control one aspect of life

How we react to things is the sole thing we can control in life. Not what happens to us, what others may think or perceive, only how we react to such situations. We can take them with stride or let them destroy us. The choice is ours.

2. Be Present

More often than not nostalgia is a deception of better times. The past cannot be changed & on that same token the future comes soon enough. Spend less time worrying about what will happen & focus on impacting the present which in turn equals your future.

3. Time is your most precious comodity

Beyond money, materials, and other worldly possessions it’s time that is your most valued asset. Once spent it’s gone, it can’t be regenerated, constantly moving. Time above everything. We share the same 24 hours it’s how we spend our time that defines our lives.

4. Opportunity is taken not given

If you wait too long for things to magically align you’ll find they were within reach the whole time. We are what we demand out of life. It’s more than hoping or wishing it’s going out there & taking every advantage possible to get closer to your goals.

5. Make more time for yourself

Allow yourself to be bored, treat yourself, get out of your comfort zone now & again. Putting yourself first doesn’t mean putting everyone below you or cutting everyone off. It means prioritizing your needs so that you can better help others along the way.

6. Shit Happens

Sometimes life is going to hit you with a rude awakening. You get fucked over, you have a bad day, what have you. Sometimes there isn’t some larger meaning to anything, sometimes shit really just happens to you no rhyme or reason. Beyond karma or anything else. It’s how you recover that defines you.

7. We all need help sometimes

I use to think independent meant being able to hold your own. That the strongest person was the one who could reserve there emotions. Going through things silently. On the contrary, in the last year alone I’ve learned the strongest most independent individuals recognize when they need help & aren’t afraid to ask for it. That our support structures in life are vital & everyone has their own battles.

8. Wealth is defined by numbers. Rich is defined by gratitude.

Wealth is measured in money & assets. The number one rule of accruing wealth is to have your money make money, reduce losses, and maximize profits. However being rich starts with your appreciation & gratitude for what you have. When you truly understand that the wealth tends to follow.

9. Assume Responsibility

In my 23 years it wasn’t getting a license, paying my own rent, or turning 18 that defined being an adult. It was a lesson I learned in business & in life. It was when you truly learned to assume responsibility for your actions. Not blaming anyone or anything for your position in life & assuming responsibility for your choices or lack thereof.

10. Allow room for spontaneity

In line with being present you have to allow for the unknown. I spent so much of my life planning & plotting that I forgot to allow for the gaps. I felt loss when something didn’t align with the plan. However that’s what adds variety to life. The curve balls, last minute trips, and random decisions that off hand define us.

11. Keep an open mind

You never know what you never know. When I moved to the states a couple years back I had a mindset much more narrow than I do now. Maybe I was young & naive thinking I wouldn’t form new relationships that could parallel my past ones or that certain things weren’t possible. When you learn to keep an open mind & erase the notion of whats possible anything can happen.

12. Be unapologetically great

We seek permission a lot on what we’re capable of. Whether it’s a degree or grade, societies blessings, or what have you. We downplay our strengths & accomplishments. To hell with that. I say be loud, be proud, be the best fucking version of yourself. When I allowed myself to be great at what I do & didn’t apologize for it my mentality changed & greatness followed.

13. Drink more water

Seriously I have to constantly remind myself of this one. There’s really no downside here.

Motivation is a reminder of something you were always capable of doing. The reality is you’ll never be 100% always inspired or motivated. Learning to do in spite of that is whats key. What makes the greats great is they did what they had to do even when everything mentally or physically told them not to.

15. Passion, Pursuits, Perception

We often believe that we have to decide in life what’s the one thing we want to do. That we must have this one passion & pursuit it following the traditional system of education. The truth is we can be many things. The reality is even those who you look up to are figuring it out in some aspects. Finding your passion or purpose is different for everyone the only constant is you’ll know it when you find it.

16. Choose optimism

The easiest thing in the world is to choose the pessimistic view. To quit. To do nothing. It requires no effort or judgement. The hard thing is to persevere despite outside opinion & noise. To keep your spirits high in the face of uncertainty. When we are surrounded by so much negativity it’s easy to forget that the positive outweighs it & that there’s more good out there that goes unrecognized.

17. Life expands in proportion to the risk you take

In all aspects the more your willing to put yourself out there or step outside your comfort zone you tend to learn something. Regardless of the outcome or result you become better because of it. I’ve built my life on risk & where I use to fear it I now welcome it.

18. We are what we put out in the universe

I’m not talking about karma or what have you. Rather we are what we believe to be. Before we can become anything we must speak it into existence. The work & effort is definitely required but a belief in oneself is where it begins. I’ve learned in my work if I don’t believe in myself & my capabilities then why should anyone else? My viewers, clients, employees. We are the energy we exert into the world & by doing so we unconsciously give others permission to do the same.

19. Have Fun

As a 22 year old who skipped out on college & jumped into the world of work at 11 this is something I need to remind myself. That these years are only moving forward & its important to stop now again & enjoy it all. Get out, celebrate, make stupid decisions now & again. It’s apart of life & regardless of ones age youth or not. It’s a simple reminder in life to have fun with it.

20. You have the time

No one is too busy or void of time. No one. Not Bill Gates, me, and you reading this. As noted earlier we all share the same 24 hours, 365 days, 7 days a week. It’s about making time for those that matter & the things you want to do or accomplish. That can be anything to going out with friends for a couple hours to life goals or hobbies. The excuse “I don’t have the time...” is just that... an excuse.

21. Don’t be afraid to think BIG

We often downplay big ideas & thinkers because we can’t process such things. We cut ourselves short of achieving greatness because we think it’s too far fetched. It’s that mentality that ironically makes such feats easier to achieve. Most won’t even start which already gives you an advantage. Don’t settle for good, go for great.

22. All things have their lifespan

Be it life itself or relationships. I had to come to terms that certain things just have their run. Some things can’t be mended but forgiven. Some things simply happen outside of our own control. The best we can do is treasure them in the moment & look back upon such things & cherish them for what they were. Some things need to be let go in order to find their way.

23. Life is a choice

At its simplest & most complex level life is a choice. What you want to be, how you want to get there, what you want out of it. A conscious decision to find out who you are & what you want. Once you find those answers is simply making a choice & putting everything behind it. Also realizing that there’ll be setbacks, missteps, and hardship. These are the very thing that wake us up to all the good things. It’s all apart of life. No matter the road you take & what may come along the way you ALWAYS have a choice.

I’m 23 years young with (hopefully) a lifetime ahead of me. Many more lessons to be learned & views that’ll surely change. Life is a process in which all our results are different. I’ve now spent a majority of my life in pursuit of my passion & work. Taking the recent years to take a step back to really see the bigger picture. Pushing myself to leave everything I knew to be home to build a new. To reach higher, push my limits, and expand my worldview. If there’s one constant no matter the year or age it’s this. I’ll always be learning. Always be one step behind my most ideal self. Work has been a big part of my life & it’ll continue to serve as such. For when you find something so intoxicating you can’t help but pursue it with every ounce of you. I aim to as always make my current year on this earth better than my last. To always be making & doing things I love while making an impact. Till the day I die (hopefully very long from now) I’ll continue to do that. Continue to push the agenda. Here’s to what is purely the best & most important of things... being alive & all the possibilities that allows for.

Briauna Leonard graduated from high school at home wearing pajamas and sitting at her kitchen table beside her cat, Mr. Pickles, watching the salutatory address that she recorded a week earlier in an almost empty auditorium.

During the virtual ceremony on May 13, which was live streamed on YouTube and broadcast on TV, Principal Timothy Cox congratulated graduates on reaching that milestone in spite of the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted their final weeks of high school.

“You went from working in a classroom to working 100 percent online,” he said. “You went from dreams of having a standard graduation to a virtual one. You went from working part-time, probably just to pay your bills, to some of you working full-time to help support your families. And you did all this while taking classes.”

“The world changed,” Cox said. “And you changed with it.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has shuttered thousands of schools across the country and canceled large group gatherings, including graduations. It has thrust new responsibilities onto teens during a pivotal time in their lives and made their futures more uncertain. Now, instead of packing auditoriums, gymnasiums and football fields with graduates and their families, schools have shifted to virtual ceremonies or socially distant celebrations at drive-in movie theaters, school parking lots or the Daytona International Speedway. Some schools have delayed graduations or scheduled individual ceremonies at which a graduate can walk across a stage and receive their diploma, with just immediate family in attendance.

Ella Potee, a senior at Pioneer Valley Regional School in Northfield, Mass., will graduate at the drive-in movie theater where she once watched Toy Story, Jurassic Park and last year’s live-action Lion King. In a few weeks, she will deliver a valedictorian speech to her 40 classmates as they sit in their cars, listening to her over the radio, watching her up on a screen made for movies.

“I grew up going to movies there with my family. I had dates there with boyfriends,” says Potee, 18. “It’s just this place in your town where everyone convenes in the summer. And to have it be the place where we’re all ending our senior year is going to be really exciting.”

At the graduation on June 4, “Pomp and Circumstance” will play as seniors drive to assigned parking spots at the Northfield Drive-In. Speakers will approach a podium one at a time. When graduates’ names are called, they’ll get out of their cars and walk up to retrieve their diploma off a table, without shaking anyone’s hand. When the ceremony ends, there will be a fireworks show, and graduates can stick around to watch a movie of their choice.

“This is making lemonade out of lemons. It’s dancing in the rain. It’s celebrating our successes, even with what the world is facing now,” Principal Kevin Burke says, adding that the ceremony is critical to recognizing the struggles many students have gone through to earn their diplomas. “I think a celebration is really important.”

School officials across the country agree, and many are going to great and creative lengths to make graduation day memorable. The Northfield Drive-In alone has received inquiries about playing host to a dozen other graduation events, for everyone from 6th-graders to medical school students. But for thousands of young adults about to leave high school, who’ve missed proms, senior trips and the chance to say goodbye in-person to their classmates, this once-in-a-lifetime moment is bittersweet, another reminder that the world they grew up in no longer exists.

Kasandra Acosta, a senior at Victor Valley High School in Victorville, Calif., tried on her cap and gown last week, texted a selfie to her mom, and cried. “It was really heartbreaking, realizing that I might not actually get to wear it for a graduation,” says Acosta, the first in her family to graduate high school. Her school is planning a drive-thru graduation event on May 26. Seniors will pick up their diplomas and walk across a stage while wearing a cap and gown and a mask with a school logo on it. Families will be required to stay in their cars.

The school principal and superintendent will walk from car to car, handing diplomas to seniors as a camera follows them so the crowd can watch.

“The biggest goal we have is that this graduation will be so fantastic, that we want our juniors to be jealous,” says White County Assistant Principal Adam Wiley, who has a background in theater and has been planning the graduation like he would choreograph a show. “We need to honor their work and celebrate them in a fashion that is befitting of what they’re dealing with.”

In Florida, about 1,050 high school seniors from the Flagler County School District will graduate at the Daytona International Speedway on May 31, seated in their cars with their families. After speeches from a couple of students and school officials, graduates will be told to start their engines and drive to the finish line, where a principal wearing a mask and gloves will hand them their diplomas before letting each grad take a victory lap around the race track.

“This will be one for the books,” says Flagler Schools Superintendent James Tager. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime deal.”

Isabella Scarcella, the student body president of Flagler Palm Coast High School, will be one of the graduates. And after a “weird and unsettling” end to her senior year, the 17-year-old is looking forward to the event, even if it’s not the graduation ceremony she had been expecting. “I know it’s going to be very different doing it on the speedway,” she says. “But at least we’re still literally and metaphorically crossing a finish line.”

The anticlimactic ending has been tough. “It means a lot to me because most of my family came from Mexico, and they didn’t get the opportunity to finish school,” Acosta says. “My Mom has always told me, ‘I want you to do things that I never got to do,’ and this was such a big part of it.”

In Savannah, Leonard, mentioned the pandemic’s effect on her class during her speech. “It means missing the cheers of my friends and family as my name is called to receive my diploma. It means missing out on the opportunity to say last goodbyes to my closest friends as we will soon be miles apart,” she said, before congratulating her classmates for thriving despite the challenges.

Viren Mirchandani, valedictorian at Jenkins High School in Savannah, regretted that he wouldn’t get to walk into graduation side-by-side with his friends or see their faces while delivering his speech. “That would’ve been an amazing moment for me, something to look back on when I’m older,” he said. “I don’t really get to cherish the memory with all those people.”

Instead, like Leonard, he tuned in to his virtual graduation from home on Wednesday morning with his parents, grandparents and younger sister.

They listened to remarks from school officials and to Mirchandani’s own pre-recorded valedictorian speech, and heard each graduate’s name as their photo appeared on screen. “I ask that you stand tall and you be proud, for you will forever be remembered as the graduating class who made milestones and history, as the world addressed a global pandemic,” she said.

What drew you to this character? | When I read over Orion’s skeleton, I was immediately enthralled. He checks off the list for every perceivable stereotype that comes with characters like his: he’s beautiful, gluttonous, and sharp as a knife. But the further I read, the more I figured that he could be so much more. He embodies certain tropes and turns them on their heads at the same time - he’s charming and he’s incredibly private. He’s physically alluring and keeps an emotional distance. He’s ambitious and inherently ambivalent about his loyalties. At first glance he seems like a man who’s willing to lie and cheat to claw his way to the top, but he’s relatively content, so long as someone is paying him. His staple of honesty is something that humanizes him - turns him from a modern day Liber into a man who knows better than to lie, even if that particular habit is brought on by years of getting spun gold shoved into his arms whenever he has so much as a bad day. It’s something that that keeps him tied down to the earth, even when he thinks he’s above the rest.

Orion is apathetic and the exact opposite of ascetic: he indulges until he can’t, and then he indulges more, and in a way I think that’s a tool for other people to use. He’s a blade, with red dripping off the serrated edge, and he knows he’s beautiful even in the wake of bloodshed, quiet or violent. To this extent, everything about Orion can be weaponized, and I think he knows it, even when he wishes he didn’t. His parents played into forging a weapon more than they probably realized simply by never saying no: when someone who doesn’t understand rejection is turned away, they get even. While he’s not a man usually compelled towards revenge (why risk something important over petty matters?), he knows there are other ways to get people to do what you want. He’s also incredibly biased: why would anyone live any other life besides the one he has? He’s divine, he’s beautiful, he’s chaotic and controlled all at once. He’s chipped away at the marble and ended up with something statuesque. It’s what people see on the surface of Verona: beautiful stone, beautiful people, beautiful lives, carved to perfection, without any clue of what’s hiding underneath the surface. I want to dig at what Orion’s got underneath the fabrication of how he presents himself. The juxtaposition between a man who so clearly wants for nothing and still feels he should have everything is so fascinating to me. (And there’s an interesting thought: what does he actually want, beyond the material or physical?) He’s one of those people that you want to hate, that you should hate, but there’s something compelling about him regardless. In that sense he’s almost like a caricature of the art pieces he admires so much.

I usually don’t write characters like Orion. I tend to gravitate towards muses who are softer, less sharp, more one-sided. They’re one way or the other, and Orion defies that just by how other people look at him and perceive him. I think getting into the nitty-gritty of someone who knows of shame or guilt (or grief, to a degree) but has never had to hold hands with or lay in bed with it is a chance for me to grow out of my comfort zone and do something great. Orion lives deliciously because he knows he can, and I want to take all that away from him at some point.

What is a future plot idea you have in mind for the character? |

AS BLACK AS VULCAN. It takes time to make a man into something he wants the world to see, and that image is incredibly important to him. He’s spent years and years pouring time, effort, and money into his outward appearance. Orion displays himself openly as something shiny and golden, with a Midas touch to go with it. He comes from privilege, he’s still privileged, and he knows it, unashamedly. I’d love to see Orion knocked down a peg, whether that be through his unchecked ego or his actual physical appearance. A scuffed Orion is an unhappy one, and how he might eventually retaliate (either through betrayal on a larger scale or something small and minor like a secret clutched close to the chest) is super compelling to me!

I’LL SACRIFICE THE LAMB THAT I DO LOVE. Given that he tends to very personally closed off, in spite of (or, in some cases, because of) his honesty, I think a relationship that Orion cannot seem to get away from could be fun to explore. He doesn’t like being attached, in spite of how some in Verona cling to him like remora fish, but it does happen, and when he’s involved in someone well enough, it can be difficult for him to separate. I don’t know that he ever quite learned the appropriate idea of what love or a healthy relationship looked like from people like his parents, who connected adoration with throwing money at the problem until it was happy, either at each other or their own son. This is something he really struggles with. Alliances and relationships are two completely separate things in his mind, in spite of what others might feel. Loyalty as a whole is a concept Orion doesn’t get. Whether this connection is a friendship he cherishes or something more romantic, I want someone to get underneath his skin enough that he can’t seem to get them out.

Alternatively, Orion could get in the middle of someone else’s relationship, just for the fun of it, or under orders. People drift towards him for a reason. He’s torn couples and families apart before, with a strange sort of severity and calculation, and I’m sure he’s willing to do it again if he’s bored enough.

IS THIS THE MADMAN? Orion’s not particularly secretive about his wavering allegiance to one side or the other. Sure, he might not say it aloud, but his actions say enough. He toes the line all the time, and at some point, it’s going to have to go one way or the other - he’s going to have to pick a side if he wants any sort of meaningful involvement (and he does, because he adores the attention). At some point I’d love to have his loyalties tested for good, whether it be as a punishment or at a crisis point in his arc, which might impact him more than anything else. There’s also the possibility of someone calling him out on his tendency to swing one way or another depending on the weather. That’s definitely enough to ask questions: why isn’t he loyal, compared to others? What will it take to get that sort of cold-blooded loyalty? Why even bother trusting Orion in the first place, if there’s any chance at all it could end badly for everyone involved?

Are you comfortable with killing off your character? | I think it could make sense just from reading his skeleton, but I won’t lie. Just from filling out this audition I’m already attached. I’d love to get to know him and write him a bit first, and see where it goes, though, so…yes, probably!

What is your favorite place in Verona?

He pulls the cup away from his lips, sets it down. Long fingers trace the rim of the saucer as he considers an answer. The Phoenix and the Turtle’s not quite moving this time of day, and he’s enjoying the relative quiet while he can. Orion’s head is pounding in something reminiscent of a hangover, and he wishes he’d taken something for it before heading out for the day. He’ll sneak something later, he’s sure of it.

Dark eyes move up. The interviewer is tinted a muted green in the gloss of his sunglasses, and he’s more than thankful for that — they can’t see the bloodshot eyes, or how he’s looking them over. It’s near habit by now for him to pick out small imperfections in faces. The bridge of their nose is a bit crooked, their cheekbones a bit too low, and they’ve got a scar above their lip that pulls when they speak. Not unattractive, but he has to wonder: do those marks bother them? Could he make them squirm if he brought them up?

His favorite places are usually the one he frequents most, and where he’d fallen into last night was no exception. If he closes his eyes, he can still recall the easy movement of human beings in sync, stretched out like content cats over chairs. “Have you ever been to the Twelfth Night Museum? It’s incredible, turns into a lounge at night, called the Tempest. You haven’t danced until you’ve tried to waltz with a statue.” Among other things, he’s sure; who’s to say what people get up to when they’re three sheets to the wind? Another passing glance. They’ve got nice hair, a flattering jawline, pretty color in their cheeks. Would look good underneath his sheets. He smiles, and it’s near blinding to look at. “We should go together, sometime. I think you’d like it, cultured individual like yourself. And then you can show me your favorite place in Verona.” He leans back in the chair, comfortable, at ease with himself: one leg crossed over the other, breathing slow and calm. He shifts the saucer half an inch, smirk settling into something casual. “I’ve been a patron of the arts since I was young. Less actual physical art, and more acting, but I can appreciate the prettier things in life. It’s a good spot to do some appreciating, if you catch my meaning.”

What does your typical day look like?

An easy laugh bubbles out of Orion, water from a brook, and he finally reaches up to remove his glasses. They’re set down on the surface of the table, and he’s careful with them — prescription isn’t cheap, and he cares more for his belongings than he does most people. Money doesn’t matter much in the way of things, but he’s not a fan of breaking things left and right like he had when he was young. “You’re being graced with my presence,” the dripping tones of sarcasm, “and you want to talk about the day to day? You’re kidding.” He’s careful not to shift his expression too much, doesn’t want to put them off. But there are so many better things he could be doing with his time, and he’s already running through the list in his head: clothes on the bed, drawers to be reorganized, eggs and milk for the fridge. Guns to ship out, crates to check, people to intimidate. It goes on. He pulls another sip from his cup.

“Same as you, I’d be willing to bet,” he winks, and the interviewer mirrors his grin, shifts in their seat. Good. He’s sure he has them wrapped around his finger, then. Best to make this go quickly. “I get up, go for a run, shower, and go to work. Sometimes, if I’m feeling especially risque, I’ll wake up early. Don’t I lead an exciting life?” There’s more to be said, sure. People do the same damn thing every day. Creature comforts, he thinks, and there’s no doubt Orion has his own. But routines and cycles and processes are boring. “In my free time I’ll dance, act, attend plays, that sort of thing. I visit the Cathedral when I can, but there seems to be less of that these days than I’d like.” It’s not a lie, necessarily. He just doesn’t attend to worship. No point in it, he thinks. “Do you pray?” It’s a polite sort of question, one he breezes past before they can even get a word out to answer. “I’m usually in bed around eleven. Quick to bed, quick to rise. It’s what my father always said.”

What has been your biggest mistake thus far?

“Strange phrasing. Thus far.” His attention settles on something else: the river, moving slow and easy, as if it doesn’t have anywhere else to be. “I don’t tend to dwell on the past, usually.” Orion would like to think that’s not so strange, but he’s met plenty of people who drown themselves in their regrets. He begins the methodical process of shutting the interviewer out as quickly as he’d pulled them in. People are more intrigued with the enigmatic and well-dressed man than they are the individual who has everything he could want and knows it. Forging himself into a Grecian work of art comes with practiced ease. Tilts his head up just so, angles his chin and jaw in a certain direction, bounces his leg with a one-two-one-two-one rhythm. The small table they’re sitting at begins to shake, and their drinks ripple.

He preaches in favor of honesty, but finds himself at a loss for words, and stalls for time by running his tongue over his top row of teeth. “Not getting to know my parents more while I could, I think.” They don’t speak anymore, and Orion can’t say he dislikes it too much, but it’s natural to wonder. He can see the image of his father now, had inherited his auburn hair and obsidian eyes. They’d stand at the same height, now, but Orion had always held the higher ground even in his youth. So much as a quiet plea for attention was silenced with gentling, a new toy. And then toys had shifted to literature, art pieces, brand name clothing, the best education anyone could offer. Quiet pleas shifted to ever-brewing anger with them. Other things were given up, which most would have only dreamed of. Physical training; he still remembers fencing quite fondly. Acting school, where he’d studied the greatest of the greats and had stolen the stage every time. But by the end of it, when Orion had left with a fortune of inheritance in his pocket, his father had been less of a man and more of a cache to pull from.

His mother was much the same, although he has a startlingly difficult time recalling the features of her face. He’d gotten her softer features, he knows, the sort that draw men and women alike in and ensnare them with the idea of saving a man at turmoil with himself. He watches the interviewer as they scribble notes, and crushes out the temptation to ask them to try and save him. (For a night, or two. Maybe three.) It never works, those attempts, given that he’s never in jeopardy, but people desperately want him to be. He could never love them, not in the way they’d like. His parents had shown him love in the way Midas had shown it for gold, not Eros’ innocent intentions.

“They’re good people. I just don’t…” A long sigh. The interviewer leans in. Orion locks eyes with them, settles a hand on his knee to stop its shaking. “That’s all they are to me. People.”

What has been the most difficult task asked of you?

The cafe’s picking up in traffic by now. It makes sense, but he’s feeling a bit antsy. Neutral ground is neutral ground is neutral ground, sure, but he knows friends and less-than friends when he sees them. He mulls, but not for long. It’s not a simple question, and there’s no simple answer he can give. The first time he’d been told to beat a man near death had certainly been traumatic, but he’d done it. Breaking bones and disrupting cartilage? Acts like spilling blood? They now come to him as smoothly as straightening out his tie in the morning. He can’t say he thinks it arduous at all. There’s no way can he be so candid, so he picks at the cuff-links on his sleeves and hums. “Asked of me, by myself, is… picking out what to wear today. Every day, really.” There’s a more unconcerned tone, here, and the interviewer leans forward, intrigued.

They might be expecting more, something more serious. But he just shrugs his shoulders. “I usually wear Louis Vuitton. It’s what I’m most comfortable in,” he laughs, and they visibly detract, as if made insecure by their lack of trademark apparel. He narrows his eyes, and they shrink even further. Orion sniffs. “I wore Gucci today, though. Only thing I’m not sure about are the shoes.” They match the blue of his wool suit, but there’s no flashy red of the soles that draw attention in the way he likes. “Appearance is everything. It’s all we have to make an impression if there’s no dialogue, I think. So it makes sense to me that it should be difficult.”

What are your thoughts on the war between the Capulets and the Montagues?

“It’s all for money and power. I understand them both, I think. Both sides have their points.” The response is immediate, as is his movement: that’s a cue to go. He stands from his seat, brushes off his suit jacket. He owes plenty to the Capulets, and that goes without saying, but the Montagues are plenty rich. He’s not opposed to a change in allegiance for the right price. It’s expected for a man like him to be easily swayed, and he doesn’t usually try to break that particular chain. “Wars don’t last forever. Between you and me, I think things are going to come to a close sooner than the people of Fair Verona think.” He picks up his sunglasses and puts them on in one fluid motion.

“And then it’ll start again, and we’ll go around in an endless cycle until someone else dies. That’s how these things are. Men are greedy until they’re in the grave, and even then some are greedier than others. If it’s not the Capulets and Montagues, it will be other families with grudges to hold.”

He can picture himself now, with a shrine akin to Dionysus’ upon his death. It will be golden, glorious, with red-stained lips and an expensive bottle of wine clutched to the chest as he’s sealed away. He wants to be the best looking man in the room, even in death. He focuses on the interviewer again, and then looks out towards the street. “I’m afraid I have to go. Thank you for taking the time to speak with me. Call me, when you get the chance. We’ll go dancing.” Orion departs before they have the chance to protest, crimson flashing with every easy step.
