Letters to my art teacher. 1

Dear Mrs Strauss,

I’m starting this journal to show you what I’ve been working on over the summer (work referenced in these entries will be seen above)! Sometimes it’s hard for me to really commit to a project without having someone to grade it or a class to critique it, so this is my way of pretending I’m still in class!

Towards the end of May I started redesigning every Link from The Legend of Zelda series, my favorite games ever. My designs are based off of my interpretations of each Link, combining elements from their specific games and experiences, and even giving them names other than just “Link.”

I still have about half the Links to go, and then I’m redesigning all of the Zeldas. I’ve fallen off of it briefly to work on stand alone projects and my comic. 

Two big standalone things I’ve done since school got out are as follows: I resculpted and painted a wolf pup figure to look like my puppy, and I painted a two headed calf based on the poem. I discovered that I like poetry, and want to paint some more poem-inspired things in the future. 

My comic is going well. I’m finally trying to figure out more concrete time travel dynamics and logistics. The story is slowly coming together. It feels like I’m doing a puzzle where I found a middle chunk first and now I’m trying to fill it out to the edges. My characters are all solidified, and I had to challenge myself to stylize some animals I normally don’t draw. Today at work I also finished floor plans for my main character’s house. I’m gonna build it in Minecraft when I’m done with dinner. 

My parents talk about you a lot. Well, they talk about you when they talk about me. They talk about comics. Theyre always reminding me that you say I’m a great comic writer and artist. I’m pretty bad at being genuine in person, so while I’m here I should tell you that I really appreciate that. Even when I don’t feel like drawing, when I’m tired and worn out from scouring the $1 CD bins at my favorite record store, your words parroted by my parents inspire me to buckle down and work. And it’s work I like. It’s work I love. So thank you for that.

To cap off this one, I want you to know that I’ve been thinking about that WIN time thing. “Art for the community.” I’ve been trying to break that down, define art, define community, define what it means to create for someone other than yourself. I’m excited to really take the reins on this one, I think it will get me out of my comfort zone. 

I’m nervous about being one of the art class seniors next year, I’m nervous about what incoming art kids I’m going to have to adjust to. I’m nervous about my future, too, but I know if I just keep making art, if I brute force it and never give up, I’ll accomplish what I want.

Portrait study from the Solitary Cyclist.

I started this in July with the intention of finishing it before the Letters from Watson substack finished SOLI and that did Not happen.

I’ve been gradually chipping away at it ever since with it being about 20hrs just for the digital rendering. And it only took that long because I had to keep scrapping and restarting Holmes’ face and hand. All my love for Jeremy Brett, but his face is so specific that it was the greatest struggle to get his likeness any decent. And I still find it lacking. But what can you do.

I appreciate the learning experience this gave and it’s made me increase my efforts in digital painting in the weeks since I started it. And my complaints aside, I really did enjoy the process. Frustrating at times, but very rewarding. And I’m quite proud to have finished it instead of leaving it in my wips folder for eternity.

i feel it's so fucking stupid and ungrateful but it still hurts a little when someone gifts me something i just don't like. i don't know. i know it's dumb and inaccurate to astrain that much meaning to a simple gift, but it feels kinda like they don't know me. i guess it feels like people don't see me, like a reminder that the person i reflect and the person i feel like are incredibly different.

I feel as though the brilliance of academia is sometimes discounted a little too heavily, especially in the current part of the artistic world which I inhabit. I speak about physics and apply it to my technique or repertory, and thus I am accused of distilling or over-analysing my work. Is my personal practice and artistry not meant to be understandable, even by myself, even though it is my body, mind, and soul partaking in it most intimately? Well, that I do not understand. I use the vocabulary that I have, in the ever-limiting nature of language, and I am told that it is wrong. Please direct me to the correct terminology that makes you feel it how my words make me feel it. To me, universal gravitation is fucking wondrous. An object can be so large that simply existing near another object means that that other object will be pulled into it, orbit it, exist as close to it as it can without being crushed or burned or absorbed. Is that not beautiful? Is that not poetic? You take up so much space that I can't help but be drawn into you. Let me into your life. Help me understand you as closely as I can while still existing in my own miraculous right. The earth orbits the sun. Your warmth, everywhere it touches me, keeps the most microscopic parts of me alive, breathing, growing, changing. Stoichiometry is the balancing of chemical equations. Oh this person is powerful and stubborn AF. The bull and the panther may be spirit animals of this person. If not, they like these animals or their personality matches those. In terms of astrological placements, we have Taurus and Aquarius, as well as Earth signs in general (Taurus Virgo Capricorn). They are a boss ass B. They are masculine. Like reaaaallyyyy masculine. They have BIG DADDY energy. Jupiter might be very well aspected in their chart or the sign in which Jupiter is in their chart matches well with the energy of Jupiter. That would be Sagittarius, Pisces and Cancer. This person is a creator and a good manifestor. They think a lot. They are cerebral. They may strugg with overthinking but their mind reminds their best asset. They are the epitome of brains are sexy. This person would know everything from ancient languages and art skills to the newest knowledge in technology and medicine. They can do anything and everything they set their mind to. In terms of their looks, they are definitely tall. They would tower over you and lift you up like you were a feather. They are strong in all aspects. In terms of timing, the page of pentacles represents several months. Now if we look at the meaning of the page of pentacles, it talks about education. The page is a learner, a student in matters of material aspects. Combined with the Higher perspective card, this definitely gives me the feeling of going back to college. Or getting a training in something very specific. Potentially something involving spirituality. Like taking reiki courses or tarot reading lessons. So I feel this person is a teacher or a mentor to you. With the Bismuth card, I feel like this person will be opening doors for you. And that could be litteral because the door of my room opened out of nowhere as I was trying to get more information from the card. Higher perspective is related to Ether. This means to me that you will meet at a point in your life when you wish to evolve, to embody a better version of yourself and seek to gain knowledge or power.

WHERE? - King of cups / The Explorer / Malachite : claim your success.

We already had kind of a hint with the previous section. And I feel like it’s further confirmed by these cards, especially the Malachite card. Now if we talk about geographical indicators, water seems to be relevant. Also on the Explorer card there’s a compass. So it tells me that where you meet them, there is either a plan or something related to navigation or orientation. Also when looking at this card I heard "you already know where to find them". So it gives me the strong feeling that many of you already know this person and already met them. It’s just that you didn’t consider them your FS. Also the malachite card mentions the workspace. So you could work together. Or you’re doing the same job and you go to them for advice. Also the king of cups card depicts a man sitting on a thrown spilling water in an ocean of sharks. So this also tells me there’s a lot of competition where you meet. And it’s like this person is trying to educate or heal the sharks somehow.

Disclaimer : I kept confusing you with group 1 and there were cards of group 1 that kept wanting to come into your reading so you might want to check group 1 as well. I think there are two people that have the potential of being your future spouse.

They are possibly a student or a young active. With the Seeker card I feel like this person hasn’t found their true calling yet. They feel lost and out of balance. Maybe they got a job that doesn’t make them happy or their studies aren’t as fulfilling as they thought. They are super shy and reserved. They may appear as cold when they are just a softy. They have trust issues. They feel really cute to be honest. But also they are lonely. It’s like they keep searching for the one, when they have so many prospects. It's like your FS wants to play hide and seek. They're not really comfortable sharing where they are. The only thing I'm picking up on is somewhere where the law is involved. So it could be an administration, a police station, law school, a lawyer's office, a prison. With the get wild card, the only hint I can get is that it can get intense. I asked for a card to clarify the Queen of swords and I got the 9 of pentacles. So law and money are involved. So maybe a bank or an insurance company. Or somewhere businesses and entrepreneurs go to get advice on how to invest their money or know if something they intend to do is legal or not.
