So there’s a professor taking Japanese in my Japanese 203 class, and he said to me “I’m not advocating for AI, but I’ve been using it as a study tool” and I literally didn’t know what to say so I just stared at him.
I’m thinking about this now bc I’ve been watching some Japanese podcasts that are aimed at beginners, and like, there is a wealth of resources out there from flesh and blood people who want to share their language with the world, and you want me to trust theft machine 9000 who could hallucinate new grammar and words???

In general, Sinners has great cinematography, but I think this tracking shot that follows Lisa Chow across the street from her parent's Black storefront to their White storefront is one of my favorites:
Look at how it immediately establishes the rules of the movie's setting.
This is Jim Crow Mississippi where Black and White residents essentially live in different worlds. The continuous take forces us (the audience) to experience that segregation in real time as we walk behind Lisa crossing the street. There are no cuts or edits to interrupt the discomfort of having to witness all those visual reminders of racism against Black Americans.
I think it's also significant that it's Lisa, an Asian American woman, who the camera follows. As someone who exists outside the Black-White racial binary, she’s able to traverse these two worlds but the bright red of her shirt still demarcates her as a conspicuous outsider amidst all the blue and brown on both sides, representing the uniquely precarious position of Asians in the U.S.’s racial hierarchy.

I’m trying to get a career in Japanese translation but my intrusive thoughts keep telling me it’s a bad idea and that I’m gonna fail no matter what.
But I keep trying to push back on that with “well if I end up hating it I can change course, but it’s worth it to try.”
I struggled a lot with Japanese last semester but I’m hoping it was the cancer that made me flop so hard, and that this time I can get back on the horse and do better.
#ramblings#I get intrusive thoughts so bad about this#I think it’s bc I’m self conscious about the being a white person who wants to learn Japanese bc of anime#and I’m careful not to idealize Japan too much bc their work culture is worse than the states#but I want to try to live out my childhood dream of working in the anime and manga industry#even if it won’t turn out to be what I imagine it as#bleh I’ve over thought this too much

PSA:
Acetaminophen/paracetamol has a hard stop upper dose limit, above which it becomes extremely toxic.
That limit is 4g (8 “extra strength” (500mg) tablets) in 24 hours (about 2 tablets every 6 hours).
A single dose of 22 extra strength tablets can kill you.
Taking 12 or more tablets per day for more than a week can also kill you (this is about 3 tablets every 6 hours).
Symptoms of overdose take up to 24 hours to manifest, and are fairly difficult to distinguish from other problems. They include abdominal pain (especially right upper quadrant), nausea, malaise, and confusion.
The antidote (n-acetylcystine) must be given within 8hours of ingestion in order to be useful.
After 10 hours the only thing that will work is a liver transplant.
You might think “why would I ever accidentally take so much?”
Well, acetaminophen is in almost everything in the cold/flu/pain aisle. Migraine combos like Excedrin, cold and flu combos like NyQuil, basically anything that says “non-aspirin pain relief”, and anything that’s branded as a fever reducer. It’s all probably acetaminophen/paracetamol.
So the goal of this post is to get you to read the labels on your medications. Because taking taking Tylenol and NyQuil together for a week (like you might if you had the flu) could kill you.
